Synthesis and Characterization of Tungsten Alkylidene and Alkylidyne Complexes Supported by a New Pyrrolide-Centered Trianionic ONO3– Pincer-Type Ligand

"Canopy Catalysts" for Alkyne Metathesis: Molybdenum Alkylidyne Complexes with a Tripodal Ligand Framework

A new family of structurally well-defined molybdenum alkylidyne catalysts for alkyne metathesis, which is distinguished by a tripodal trisilanolate ligand architecture, is presented. Complexes of type 1 combine the virtues of previous generations of silanolate-based catalysts with a significantly improved functional group tolerance. They are easy to prepare on scale; the modularity of the ligand synthesis allows the steric and electronic properties to be fine-tuned and hence the application profile of the catalysts to be optimized. This opportunity is manifested in the development of catalyst 1f, which is as reactive as the best ancestors but exhibits an unrivaled scope. The new catalysts work well in the presence of unprotected alcohols and various other protic groups. The chelate effect entails even a certain stability toward water, which marks a big leap forward in metal alkylidyne chemistry in general. At the same time, they tolerate many donor sites, including basic nitrogen and numerous heterocycles. This aspect is substantiated by applications to polyfunctional (natural) products. A combined spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational study provides insights into structure and electronic character of complexes of type 1. Particularly informative are a density functional theory (DFT)-based chemical shift tensor analysis of the alkylidyne carbon atom and ⁹⁵Mo NMR spectroscopy; this analytical tool had been rarely used in organometallic chemistry before but turns out to be a sensitive probe that deserves more attention. The data show that the podand ligands render a Mo-alkylidyne a priori more electrophilic than analogous monodentate triarylsilanols; proper ligand tuning, however, allows the Lewis acidity as well as the steric demand about the central atom to be adjusted to the point that excellent performance of the catalyst is ensured.

The reaction of the methylidyne complex [W([triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)Br(CO)₂(dcpe)] (dcpe = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane) with ^tBuLi affords the intermediate anionic neopentylidyne complex Li[W([triple bond, length as m-dash]C^tBu)(CO)₂(dcpe)] which acts as a metal-based nucleophile towards ^tBuCl, ^tBuBr, Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se, Te) and ClSnMe₃ to afford the new carbyne complexes [W([triple bond, length as m-dash]C^tBu)(X)(CO)₂(dcpe)] (X = Cl, Br, EPh, SnMe₃).

Synthesis of meta-Terphenyl-2,2''-diols by Anodic C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions

The anodic C-C cross-coupling reaction is a versatile synthetic approach to symmetric and non-symmetric biphenols and arylated phenols. We herein present a metal-free electrosynthetic method that provides access to symmetric and non-symmetric meta-terphenyl-2,2''-diols in good yields and high selectivity. Symmetric derivatives can be obtained by direct electrolysis in an undivided cell. The synthesis of non-symmetric meta-terphenyl-2,2''-diols required two electrochemical steps. The reactions are easy to conduct and scalable. The method also features a broad substrate scope, and a large variety of functional groups are tolerated. The target molecules may serve as [OCO](3-) pincer ligands.

Highly selective molybdenum ONO pincer complex initiates the living ring-opening metathesis polymerization of strained alkynes with exceptionally low polydispersity indices

The pseudo-octahedral molybdenum benzylidyne complex [TolC≡Mo(ONO)(OR)]·KOR (R = CCH3(CF3)2) 1, featuring a stabilizing ONO pincer ligand, initiates the controlled living polymerization of strained dibenzocyclooctynes at T > 60 °C to give high molecular weight polymers with exceptionally low polydispersities (PDI ∼ 1.02). Kinetic analyses reveal that the growing polymer chain attached to the propagating catalyst efficiently limits the rate of propagation with respect to the rate of initiation (kp/ki ∼ 10(-3)). The reversible coordination of KOCCH3(CF3)2 to the propagating catalyst prevents undesired chain-termination and -transfer processes. The ring-opening alkyne metathesis polymerization with 1 has all the characteristics of a living polymerization and enables, for the first time, the controlled synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers via ROAMP.
