Abstract
Metalloenzymes can efficiently achieve the multielectron interconversion of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide under mild conditions. Anaerobic carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) performs these reactions at the C cluster, a unique nickel-iron-sulfide cluster that features an apparent three-coordinate nickel site. How nature assembles the [NiFe3S4]-Feu cluster is not well understood. We use synthetic clusters to demonstrate that electron transfer can drive insertion of a Ni0 precursor into an [Fe4S4]3+ cluster to assemble higher nuclearity nickel-iron-sulfide clusters with the same complement of metal ions as the C cluster. Initial electron transfer results in a [1Ni-4Fe-4S] cluster in which a Ni1+ ion sits outside of the cluster. Modifying the Ni0 precursor results in the insertion of two nickel atoms into the cluster, concomitant with ejection of an iron to yield an unprecedented [2Ni-3Fe-4S] cluster possessing four three-coordinate metal sites. Both clusters are characterized using magnetometry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Mössbauer, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy and supported by DFT computations that are consistent with both clusters having nickel in the +1 oxidation state. These results demonstrate that Ni1+ is a viable oxidation state within iron-sulfur clusters and that redox-driven transformations can give rise to higher nuclearity clusters of relevance to the CODH C cluster.

Abstract
N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-supported nickel complexes were investigated for the oxidative ring-opening of vinylcyclobutane (VCB) and photocatalytic activity. Addition of VCB to in situ generated [(NHC)Ni(0)] compounds furnished (NHC)Ni(VCB)2 that underwent oxidative addition and conversion to the corresponding Ni(II) alkyl, allyl-metallacycles. The (NHC)Ni(C6H10) metallacycles were isolated, characterized, and exhibited high thermal and chemical stability. Irradiation with visible light at ambient temperature produced a mixture of ethylene and 4-vinylcyclohexene and 1,5-cyclooctadiene, cycloaddition dimers of butadiene, arising from formal retro-[2 + 2] cycloaddition. A mixture of hexadiene products arising from β-H elimination from the metallacycle was also observed. Free ethylene also underwent a secondary reaction to form cyclopropane products through formal [2 + 1] cycloaddition. A series of sterically and electronically modified NHC ligands was evaluated to establish the structure-activity relationship governing the rate of photocatalytic conversion of VCB and the resulting product distribution. Isotopic labeling experiments, resting state analysis, and independent synthesis of a range of nickel bis(olefin) complexes provided insight into the mechanism of the reaction and origins of the organic product mixture. (NHC)Ni-catalysis was also applied toward the retro-[2 + 2] depolymerization of (1,n'-divinyl)-oligocyclobutane to butadiene dimers.

Abstract
The development of efficient and sustainable methods for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds with the simultaneous stereoselective generation of vicinal stereogenic centers is a longstanding goal in organic chemistry. Low-valent nickel(0) complexes which promote α-functionalization of carbonyls leveraging its pro-nucleophilic character in conjunction with suitable olefin acceptors are scarce. We report a Ni(0)NHC catalyst which selectively converts ketones and non-conjugated dienes to synthetically highly valuable α-allylated products. The catalyst directly activates the α-hydrogen atom of the carbonyl substrate transferring it to the olefin acceptor. The transformation creates adjacent quaternary and tertiary stereogenic centers in a highly diastereoselective and enantioselective manner. Computational studies indicate the ability of the Ni(0)NHC catalyst to trigger a ligand-to-ligand hydrogen transfer process from the ketone α-hydrogen atom to the olefin substrate, setting the selectivity of the process. The shown selective functionalization of the α-C-H bond of carbonyl groups by the Ni(0)NHC catalyst opens up new opportunities to exploit sustainable 3d-metal catalysis for a stereoselective access to valuable chiral building blocks.

Abstract
A cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized 1,4-diborabenzene (DBB, 1) reacts with the group 10 precursor [Ni(CO)4] to yield the DBB pogo-stick complex [(η6-DBB)Ni(CO)] (2) as a dark-green crystalline solid. The IR-spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic data of 2 highlight the strong π-donor properties of the DBB ligand. The reaction of 1 with [M(nbe)2] (M = Pd, Pt; nbe = norbornene) yields the unique zerovalent heavier group 10 arene pogo-stick complexes [(η6-DBB)M(nbe)] (3-M), isolated as dark-purple and black crystalline solids, respectively. 3-Pd and 3-Pt show strong near-IR (NIR) absorptions at 835 and 904 nm, respectively. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations show that these result from the S0→S1 excitation, which corresponds to a transfer of electron density from a metal d orbital aligned with the z direction (dxz or dyz) to a d orbital located in the xy plane (dxy or dx2-y2), with the redshift for 3-Pt resulting from the higher spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In complex 2, electron donation from the nickel center into the carbonyl 2π* orbital destabilizes the DBB···Ni interaction, resulting in an absorption at a higher energy. Complexes 2 and 3-M react with [Fe(CO)5] to yield the doubly CO-bridged M(0)→Fe(0) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) 4-M as black (M = Ni, Pt) and dark-turquoise (M = Pd) crystalline solids. Furthermore, 3-Pt undergoes oxidative Sn-H addition with Ph3SnH to yield the corresponding Pt(II) stannyl hydride, [(η6-DBB)PtH(SnPh3)] (5).

Abstract
Carboxylic acid derivatives are appealing alternatives to organohalides as cross-coupling electrophiles for fine chemical synthesis due to their prevalence in biomass and bioactive small molecules as well as their ease of preparation and handling. Within this family, carboxamides comprise a versatile electrophile class for nickel-catalyzed coupling with carbon and heteroatom nucleophiles. However, even state-of-the-art C(acyl)-N functionalization and cross-coupling reactions typically require high catalyst loadings and specific substitution patterns. These challenges have proven difficult to overcome, in large part due to limited experimental mechanistic insight. In this work, we describe a detailed mechanistic case study of acylative coupling reactions catalyzed by the commonly employed Ni/SIPr catalyst system (SIPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidine). Stoichiometric organometallic studies, in situ spectroscopic measurements, and crossover experiments demonstrate the accessibility of Ni(0), Ni(I), and Ni(II) resting states. Although in situ precatalyst activation limits reaction efficiency, the low concentrations of active, SIPr-supported Ni(0) select for electrophile-first (closed-shell) over competing nucleophile-first (open-shell) mechanistic manifolds. We anticipate that the experimental insights into the nature and controlling features of these distinct pathways will accelerate rational improvements to cross-coupling methodologies involving pervasive carboxamide substrate motifs.

Abstract
Classical metalation reactions such as the metal-halogen exchange have had a transformative impact on organic synthesis owing to their broad applicability in building carbon-carbon bonds from carbon-halogen bonds. Extending the metal-halogen exchange logic to a metal-carbon exchange would enable the direct modification of carbon frameworks with new implications in retrosynthetic analysis. However, such a transformation requires the selective cleavage of highly inert chemical bonds and formation of stable intermediates amenable to further synthetic elaborations, hence its development has remained considerably challenging. Here we introduce a skeletal metalation strategy that allows lactams, a prevalent motif in bioactive molecules, to be readily converted into well-defined, synthetically useful organonickel reagents. The reaction features a selective activation of unstrained amide C-N bonds mediated by an easily prepared Ni(0) reagent, followed by CO deinsertion and dissociation under mild room temperature conditions in a formal carbonyl-to-nickel-exchange process. The underlying principles of this unique reactivity are rationalized by organometallic and computational studies. The skeletal metalation is further applied to a direct CO excision reaction and a carbon isotope exchange reaction of lactams, underscoring the broad potential of metal-carbon exchange logic in organic synthesis.

Abstract
AbstractThe Ni-catalysed hydrogenolysis and cross-coupling of aryl ethers has emerged as a powerful synthetic tool to transform inert phenol-derived electrophiles into functionalised aromatic molecules. This has attracted significant interest due to its potential to convert the lignin fraction of biomass into chemical feedstocks, or to enable orthogonal reactivity and late-stage synthetic modification. Although the scope of nucleophiles employed, and hence the C–C and C–heteroatom bonds that can be forged, has expanded significantly since Wenkert’s seminal work in 1979, mechanistic understanding on how these reactions operate is still uncertain since the comparatively inert Caryl–O bond of aryl ethers challenge the involvement of classical mechanisms involving direct oxidative addition to Ni(0). In this review, we document the different mechanisms that have been proposed in the Ni-catalysed hydrogenolysis and cross-coupling of aryl ethers. These include: (i) direct oxidative addition; (ii) Lewis acid assisted C–O bond cleavage; (iii) anionic nickelates, and; (iv) Ni(I) intermediates. Experimental and theoretical investigations by numerous research groups have generated a pool of knowledge that will undoubtedly facilitate future discoveries in the development of novel Ni-catalysed transformations of aryl ethers.1 Introduction2 Direct Oxidative Addition3 Hydrogenolysis of Aryl Ethers4 Lewis Acid Assisted C–O Bond Cleavage5 Anionic Nickelates6 Ni(I) Intermediates7 The ‘Naphthalene Problem’8 Conclusions and Outlook

Abstract
A case study on the effect of the employment of two different NHC ligands in complexes [Ni(NHC)2] (NHC=iPr2ImMe1Me, Mes2Im 2) and their behavior towards alkynes is reported. The reaction of a mixture of [Ni2(iPr2ImMe)4(μ‐(η2 : η2)‐COD)] B/ [Ni(iPr2ImMe)2(η4‐COD)] B’ or [Ni(Mes2Im)2] 2, respectively, with alkynes afforded complexes [Ni(NHC)2(η2‐alkyne)] (NHC=iPr2ImMe: alkyne=MeC≡CMe 3, H7C3C≡CC3H74, PhC≡CPh 5, MeOOCC≡CCOOMe 6, Me3SiC≡CSiMe37, PhC≡CMe 8, HC≡CC3H79, HC≡CPh 10, HC≡C(p‐Tol) 11, HC≡C(4‐tBu‐C6H4) 12, HC≡CCOOMe 13; NHC=Mes2Im: alkyne=MeC≡CMe 14, MeOOCC≡CCOOMe 15, PhC≡CMe 16, HC≡C(4‐tBu‐C6H4) 17, HC≡CCOOMe 18). Unusual rearrangement products 11 a and 12 a were identified for the complexes of the terminal alkynes HC≡C(p‐Tol) and HC≡C(4‐tBu‐C6H4), 11 and 12, which were formed by addition of a C−H bond of one of the NHC N‐iPr methyl groups to the C≡C triple bond of the coordinated alkyne. Complex 2 catalyzes the cyclotrimerization of 2‐butyne, 4‐octyne, diphenylacetylene, dimethyl acetylendicarboxylate, 1‐pentyne, phenylacetylene and methyl propiolate at ambient conditions, whereas 1Me is not a good catalyst. The reaction of 2 with 2‐butyne was monitored in some detail, which led to a mechanistic proposal for the cyclotrimerization at [Ni(NHC)2]. DFT calculations reveal that the differences between 1Me and 2 for alkyne cyclotrimerization lie in the energy profile of the initiation steps, which is very shallow for 2, and each step is associated with only a moderate energy change. The higher stability of 3 compared to 14 is attributed to a better electron transfer from the NHC to the metal to the alkyne ligand for the N‐alkyl substituted NHC, to enhanced Ni‐alkyne backbonding due to a smaller CNHC−Ni−CNHC bite angle, and to less steric repulsion of the smaller NHC iPr2ImMe.

Abstract
Developmental studies are ongoing to discover a way to utilise new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Ni complexes as catalysts. Using a bulky NHC ligand, it is possible to synthesise an NHC/phosphine-mixed heteroleptic Ni(II) complex, which can serve as an excellent catalyst for various cross-coupling reactions. During the study of the reaction mechanisms using these Ni complexes, NHC-Ni(I) complexes were accidentally discovered, and it was observed that they exhibit excellent catalytic activity for cross-coupling reactions. The possibility of the presence of NHC-Ni(I) intermediates in these catalytic reaction pathways has been experimentally demonstrated. Depending on the type of reaction, dinuclear Ni(I) and mononuclear Ni(I) complexes can function as intermediates. The results of the investigation of each reaction mechanism are summarised, and the prospects are described.

Abstract
The addition of PPh2 H, PPhMeH, PPhH2 , P(para-Tol)H2 , PMesH2 and PH3 to the two-coordinate Ni0 N-heterocyclic carbene species [Ni(NHC)2 ] (NHC=IiPr2 , IMe4 , IEt2 Me2 ) affords a series of mononuclear, terminal phosphido nickel complexes. Structural characterisation of nine of these compounds shows that they have unusual trans [H-Ni-PR2 ] or novel trans [R2 P-Ni-PR2 ] geometries. The bis-phosphido complexes are more accessible when smaller NHCs (IMe4 >IEt2 Me2 >IiPr2 ) and phosphines are employed. P-P activation of the diphosphines R2 P-PR2 (R2 =Ph2 , PhMe) provides an alternative route to some of the [Ni(NHC)2 (PR2 )2 ] complexes. DFT calculations capture these trends with P-H bond activation proceeding from unconventional phosphine adducts in which the H substituent bridges the Ni-P bond. P-P bond activation from [Ni(NHC)2 (Ph2 P-PPh2 )] adducts proceeds with computed barriers below 10 kcal mol-1 . The ability of the [Ni(NHC)2 ] moiety to afford isolable terminal phosphido products reflects the stability of the Ni-NHC bond that prevents ligand dissociation and onward reaction.

Abstract
Bulky terphenyl phosphane ligands PMe2Ar' (Ar' = terphenyl group) facilitate the isolation of zero-valent bis-phosphane complexes of nickel, palladium and platinum. The former show coordination numbers greater than two in the solid state due to the existence of Ni-Carene interactions with the terphenyl fragment.

Abstract
The first mixed phosphatetrahedranes were reported only recently and their reactivity is virtually unexplored. Herein, we present a reactivity study on di‐tert‐butyldiphosphatetrahedrane (1), which is the dimer of tert‐butylphosphaalkyne. The (tBuCP)2 tetrahedron is activated selectively by N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) nickel(I) and nickel(0) complexes, resulting in novel complexes featuring diverse (tBuCP)n‐frameworks (n=2, 4). Release of the (tBuCP)4 framework from one of the complexes was achieved by addition of CO gas. Furthermore, 1 can be used as a source for P2 units by elimination of di‐tert‐butylacetylene in the coordination sphere of nickel.

Abstract
The homolytic cleavage of O-H and N-H or weak C-H bonds is a key elementary step in redox catalysis, but is thought to be unfeasible for palladium. In stark contrast, reported here is the room temperature and reversible oxidative addition of water, isopropanol, hexafluoroisopropanol, phenol, and aniline to a palladium(0) complex with a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) and a labile pyridino ligand, as is also the case in popular N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium(II) precatalysts. The oxidative addition of protic solvents or adventitious water switches the chemoselectivity in catalysis with alkynes through activation of the terminal C-H bond. Most salient, the homolytic activation of alcohols and amines allows atom-efficient, additive-free cross-coupling and transfer hydrogenation under mild reaction conditions with usually unreactive, yet desirable reagents, including esters and bis(pinacolato)diboron.

Abstract
Herein, two novel isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) M-URJC-4 (M = Co, Ni; URJC = "Universidad Rey Juan Carlos") with open metal sites, permanent microposity, and large surface areas and pore volumes have been developed. These novel MOFs, with polyhedral morphology, crystallize in the monoclinic P21/c space group, exhibiting a three-dimensional structure with microporous channels along the c axis. Initially, they were fully characterized and tested in hydrogen (H2) adsorption at different conditions of temperature and pressure. The physisorption capacities of both materials surpassed the gravimetric H2 uptake shown by most MOF materials under the same conditions. On the basis of the outstanding adsorption properties, the Ni-URJC-4 material was used as a catalyst in a one-pot reductive amination reaction using various carbonyl compounds and primary amines. A possible chemical pathway to obtain secondary amines was proposed via imine formation, and remarkable performances were accomplished. This work evidences the dual ability of M-URJC-4 materials to be used as a H2 adsorbent and a catalyst in reductive amination reactions, activating molecular H2 at low pressures for the reduction of C═N double bonds and providing reference structural features for the design of new versatile heterogeneous materials for industrial application.

Abstract
The mechanism of the reactions between dppf-Ni0 complexes and alkyl halides has been investigated using kinetic and mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations. The active species is [Ni(κ2-dppf)(κ1-dppf)], which undergoes a halide abstraction reaction with alkyl halides and rapidly captures the alkyl radical that is formed. The rates of the reactions of [Ni(COD)(dppf)] with alkyl halides and the yields of prototypical nickel-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling reactions of alkyl halides are shown to be significantly improved by the addition of free dppf ligand.

Abstract
The reaction of zerovalent nickel compounds with white phosphorus (P4) is a barely explored route to binary nickel phosphide clusters. Here, we show that coordinatively and electronically unsaturated N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) nickel(0) complexes afford unusual cluster compounds with P1, P3, P5 and P8 units. Using [Ni(IMes)2] [IMes=1,3‐bis(2,4,6‐trimethylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene], electron‐deficient Ni3P4 and Ni3P6 clusters have been isolated, which can be described as superhypercloso and hypercloso clusters according to the Wade–Mingos rules. Use of the bulkier NHC complexes [Ni(IPr)2] or [(IPr)Ni(η6‐toluene)] [IPr=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene] affords a closo‐Ni3P8 cluster. Inverse‐sandwich complexes [(NHC)2Ni2P5] (NHC=IMes, IPr) with an aromatic cyclo‐P5− ligand were identified as additional products.

Abstract
Organometallic sandwich complexes, composed of cyclic hydrocarbon ligands and transition-metal atoms, display unique physical and chemical properties. In this work, the electronic and spin transport properties of one-dimensional (1D) VBz2 ligand bimetallic sandwich complexes, VBz2-TM (TM = Cr, Mn, and Fe), are systematically investigated using density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function method. The results show that all the 1D infinite molecular wires [(VBz2)TM]∞ (TM = Cr-Fe) are found to be thermodynamically stable with high binding energies (∼1.0-3.45 eV). In particular, they are predicted to be ferromagnetic half metals. Moreover, the I-V curves exhibit negative differential resistance for one, two, and three VBz2-TM wires at TM = Cr, Mn, and Fe, respectively, which is of great significance for certain electronic applications. Our findings strongly suggest that the benzene ligand bimetallic sandwich molecular wires are good candidates for potential electronics and spintronics.

Abstract
Anti-Markovnikov additions to alkenes have been a longstanding goal of catalysis, and anti-Markovnikov addition of arenes to alkenes would produce alkylarenes that are distinct from those formed by acid-catalysed processes. Existing hydroarylations are either directed or occur with low reactivity and low regioselectivity for the n-alkylarene. Herein, we report the first undirected hydroarylation of unactivated alkenes with unactivated arenes that occurs with high regioselectivity for the anti-Markovnikov product. The reaction occurs with a nickel catalyst ligated by a highly sterically hindered N-heterocyclic carbene. Catalytically relevant arene- and alkene-bound nickel complexes have been characterized, and the rate-limiting step was shown to be reductive elimination to form the C-C bond. Density functional theory calculations, combined with second-generation absolutely localized molecular orbital energy decomposition analysis, suggest that the difference in activity between catalysts containing large and small carbenes results more from stabilizing intramolecular non-covalent interactions in the secondary coordination sphere than from steric hindrance.

Abstract
The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Abstract
The synthesis and catalytic activity of several classes of NHC-Ni(0) pre-catalysts stabilized by electron-withdrawing alkenes are described. Variations in the structure of fumarate and acrylate ligands modulate the reactivity and stability of the NHC-Ni(0) pre-catalysts and lead to practical and versatile catalysts for a variety of transformations. The catalytic activity and efficiency of representative members of this class of catalysts have been evaluated in reductive couplings of aldehydes and alkynes and in N-arylations of aryl chlorides.

Abstract
Recent interest in the valorization of lignin has led to reactions involving the cleavage of strong aromatic C-O bonds. However, few experimental mechanistic studies of these reactions have been published. We report detailed mechanistic analysis of the hydrogenolysis of diaryl ethers catalyzed by the combination of Ni(COD)2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). Experiments on the catalytic reaction indicated that NaOt-Bu was necessary for catalysis, but kinetic analysis showed that the base is not involved in the rate-limiting C-O bond cleavage. The resting state of the catalyst is an NHC-Ni(η6-arene) complex. Substitution of the coordinated solvent with diaryl ether allowed isolation of a diaryl ether-bound Ni complex. Rate-limiting C-O bond cleavage occurs to generate a three-coordinate product of oxidative addition, a metallacyclic version of which has been prepared independently. Stoichiometric studies show that arene and phenol products are released following reaction with H2. NaOt-Bu was found to deprotonate the phenol product and to prevent formation of inactive NiI dimers.

Abstract
We report the first catalytic method for activating the acyl C-O bonds of methyl esters through an oxidative-addition process. The oxidative-addition adducts, formed using nickel catalysis, undergo in situ trapping to provide anilide products. DFT calculations are used to support the proposed reaction mechanism, to understand why decarbonylation does not occur competitively, and to elucidate the beneficial role of the substrate structure and the Al(OtBu)3 additive on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the reaction.
