Dinickelametallocenes: Sandwich Compounds of the First-Row Transition Metals (M = Fe, Co, Ni) with Two Pentahapto Planar Nickelacycle Ligands

Electronic Spin Moment As a Catalytic Descriptor for Fe Single-Atom Catalysts Supported on C2N

The electrocatalytic activity of transition-metal-based compounds is strongly related to the spin states. However, the underlying relationship connecting spin to catalytic activity remains unclear. Herein, we carried out density functional theory calculations on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyzed by Fe single-atom supported on C₂N (C₂N-Fe) to shed light on this relationship. It is found that the change of electronic spin moments of Fe and O₂ due to molecular-catalyst adsorption scales with the amount of electron transfer from Fe to O₂, which promotes the catalytic activity of C₂N-Fe for driving ORR. The nearly linear relationship between the catalytic activity and spin moment variation suggests electronic spin moment as a promising catalytic descriptor for Fe single-atom based catalysts. Following the revealed relationship, the ORR barrier on C₂N-Fe was tuned to be as low as 0.10 eV through judicious manipulation of spin states. These findings thus provide important insights into the relationship between catalytic activity and spin, leading to new strategies for designing transition metal single-atom catalysts.

Dinickelaferrocene: A Ferrocene Analogue with Two Aromatic Nickeloles Realized by Electron Back-Donation from Iron

The first example of ferrocene analogues with two transition-metal metallole ligands of the general formula (η⁵ -C₄ R₄ M)₂ Fe in a sandwich structure are reported. Specifically, dinickelaferrocene 2, a type of dimetallametallocene, is efficiently synthesized from the reaction of dilithionickelole 1 with FeBr₂ or FeCl₂ , presumably via a redox process, and is subjected to detailed experimental (single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, ICP-OES, magnetometry, ⁵⁷ Fe Mössbauer, XPS) and theoretical (MOs, CDA, NICS, ICSS, and AICD) characterizations. Unlike ferrocene and its Cp ligands, the aromaticity of dinickelaferrocene and its nickelole ligands is accomplished by electron back-donation from the Fe 3d orbitals to the π* orbitals of nickelole. Taken together, this work describes a new class of metallaferrocene sandwich complexes and provides a novel approach to effect aromaticity that will contribute to further development of metallocene chemistry.

Mechanistic Study of Nickel-Catalyzed Reductive Coupling of Ynoates and Aldehydes

In this work, (1,5-hexadiene)Ni(SIPr) (SIPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolidin-2-ylidene) is used in place of Ni(COD)₂/SIPr·HBF₄/KO^tBu (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) as a more robust catalyst for regioselective reductive coupling of ynoates and aldehydes with triethylsilane. The catalytic reaction of ethyl 3-(trimethylsilyl)propiolate and methyl 4-formylbenzoate shows first-order dependence on aldehyde and catalyst concentrations, inverse first-order dependence on [ynoate], and no dependence on [silane]. The kinetics data, coupled with deuterium-labeling experiments, support a mechanism involving dissociation of the ynoate from a catalytically dormant nickelacyclopentadiene intermediate prior to turnover-limiting formation of a catalytically active nickeladihydrofuran.
