Abstract
This review surveys the synthesis and reactivity of low-oxidation state metalate anions of the d-block elements, with an emphasis on contributions reported between 2006 and 2022. Although the field has a long and rich history, the chemistry of transition metalate anions has been greatly enhanced in the last 15 years by the application of advanced concepts in complex synthesis and ligand design. In recent years, the potential of highly reactive metalate complexes in the fields of small molecule activation and homogeneous catalysis has become increasingly evident. Consequently, exciting applications in small molecule activation have been developed, including in catalytic transformations. This article intends to guide the reader through the fascinating world of low-valent transition metalates. The first part of the review describes the synthesis and reactivity of d-block metalates stabilized by an assortment of ligand frameworks, including carbonyls, isocyanides, alkenes and polyarenes, phosphines and phosphorus heterocycles, amides, and redox-active nitrogen-based ligands. Thereby, the reader will be familiarized with the impact of different ligand types on the physical and chemical properties of metalates. In addition, ion-pairing interactions and metal-metal bonding may have a dramatic influence on metalate structures and reactivities. The complex ramifications of these effects are examined in a separate section. The second part of the review is devoted to the reactivity of the metalates toward small inorganic molecules such as H2, N2, CO, CO2, P4 and related species. It is shown that the use of highly electron-rich and reactive metalates in small molecule activation translates into impressive catalytic properties in the hydrogenation of organic molecules and the reduction of N2, CO, and CO2. The results discussed in this review illustrate that the potential of transition metalate anions is increasingly being tapped for challenging catalytic processes with relevance to organic synthesis and energy conversion. Therefore, it is hoped that this review will serve as a useful resource to inspire further developments in this dynamic research field.

Abstract
The nature of transition-metal-olefin bonding has been explained by the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model within a continuum of two extremes, namely, a π-complex and a metallacyclopropane. The textbook rule suggests that a low-spin late-transition-metal-ethylene complex more likely forms a π-complex rather than a metallacyclopropane. Herein, we report a low-spin late-transition-metal-bis-ethylene complex forming an unprecedented planar metalla-bis-cyclopropane structure with magnesium-based metalloligands. Treatment of LMgEt (L = [(DippNCMe)2CH]-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with Ni(cod)2 (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) formed the heterotrimetallic complex (LMg)2Ni(C2H4)2, which features a linear Mg-Ni-Mg linkage and a planar coordination geometry at the nickel center. Both structural features and computational studies strongly supported the Ni(C2H4)2 moiety as a nickelaspiropentane. The exposure of (LMg)2Ni(C2H4)2 to 1 bar H2 at room temperature produced a four-hydride-bridged complex (LMg)2Ni(μ-H)4. The profile of H2 activation was elucidated by density functional theory calculations, which indicated a novel Mg/Ni cooperative activation mechanism with no oxidation occurring at the metal center, differing from the prevailing mono-metal-based redox mechanism. Moreover, the heterotrimetallic complex (LMg)2Ni(C2H4)2 catalyzed the hydrogenation of a wide range of unsaturated substrates under mild conditions.

Abstract
Alternative candidate precursors to [Hf(BH4)4] for low-temperature chemical vapor deposition of hafnium diboride (HfB2) films were identified using density functional theory simulations of molecules with the composition [Hf(BH4)2L2], where L = -OH, -OMe, -O-t-Bu, -NH2, -N=C=O, -N(Me)2, and -N(CH2)5NH2 (1-piperidin-2-amine referred to as Pip2A). Disassociation energies (E D), potential energy surface (PES) scans, ionization potentials, and electron affinities were all calculated to identify the strength of the Hf-L bond and the potential reactivity of the candidate precursor. Ultimately, the low E D (2.07 eV) of the BH4 ligand removal from the Hf atom in [Hf(BH4)4] was partially attributed to an intermediate state where [Hf(BH4)3(H)] and BH3 is formed. Of the candidate precursors investigated, three exhibited a similar mechanism, but only -Pip2A had a PES scan that indicated binding competitive with [Hf(BH4)4], making it a viable candidate for further study.

Abstract
The surprising transformation of the saturated diamine (iPr)NHCH(2)CH(2)NH(iPr) to the unsaturated diazaethene [(iPr)NCH═CHN(iPr)](2-) via the synergic mixture nBuM, (tBu)(2)Zn and TMEDA (where M = Li, Na; TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) has been investigated by multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations. Several pertinent intermediary and related compounds (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)NH(iPr)]Zn(tBu)(2) (3), (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu) (5), {(THF)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu)}(2) (6), and {(TMEDA)Na[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu)}(2) (11), characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, are discussed in relation to their role in the formation of (TMEDA)M[(iPr)NCH═CHN(iPr)]Zn(tBu) (M = Li, 1; Na, 10). In addition, the dilithio zincate molecular hydride [(TMEDA)Li](2)[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu)H 7 has been synthesized from the reaction of (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)NH(iPr)]Zn(tBu)(2)3 with nBuLi(TMEDA) and also characterized by both X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic studies. The retention of the Li-H bond of 7 in solution was confirmed by (7)Li-(1)H HSQC experiments. Also, the (7)Li NMR spectrum of 7 in C(6)D(6) solution allowed for the rare observation of a scalar (1)J(Li-H) coupling constant of 13.3 Hz. Possible mechanisms for the transformation from diamine to diazaethene, a process involving the formal breakage of four bonds, have been determined computationally using density functional theory. The dominant mechanism, starting from (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu) (4), involves the formation of a hydride intermediate and leads directly to the observed diazaethene product. In addition the existence of 7 in equilibrium with 4 through the dynamic association and dissociation of a (TMEDA)LiH ligand, also provides a secondary mechanism for the formation of the diazaethene. The two reaction pathways (i.e., starting from 4 or 7) are quite distinct and provide excellent examples in which the two distinct metals in the system are able to interact synergically to catalyze this otherwise challenging transformation.
