Abstract
Although osmabenzyne, osmanaphthalyne, osmaphenanthryne, and osmaanthracyne have been previously reported, the synthesis of polycyclic osmaarynes is still a challenge. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of the first pentacyclic osmaarynes (pyreno[b]osmabenzynes 1 a and 2 a) and hexacyclic osmaaryne (peryleno[b]osmabenzyne 3 a). Nucleophilic reaction of osmaarynes was used to obtain the corresponding pyreno[b]osmium complexes (1 and 2) and peryleno[b] osmium complex (3), which exhibited near-infrared luminescence and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Complexes 2 and 3 are resistant to photodegradation, and complex 2 has better photothermal conversion properties than 3.

Abstract
Transition metals form a variety of alkylidyne complexes with either a d0 metal center (high-valent) or a non-d0 metal center (low-valent). One of the most interesting properties of alkylidyne complexes is that they can undergo or mediate metathesis reactions. The most well-studied metathesis reactions are alkyne metathesis involving high-valent alkylidynes. High-valent alkylidynes can also undergo metathesis reactions with heterotriple bonded species such as N≡CR, P≡CR, and N≡NR+. Metathesis reactions involving low-valent alkylidynes are less known. Highly efficient alkyne metathesis catalysts have been developed based on Mo(VI) and W(VI) alkylidynes. Catalytic cross-metathesis of nitriles with alkynes has also been achieved with M(VI) (M = W, Mo) alkylidyne or nitrido complexes. The metathesis activity of alkylidyne complexes is sensitively dependent on metals, supporting ligands and substituents of alkylidynes. Beyond metathesis, metal alkylidynes can also promote other reactions including alkyne polymerization. The remaining shortcomings and opportunities in the field are assessed.

Abstract
Complex OsH4{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (1) activates the Si-H bond of triethylsilane, triphenylsilane, and 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane to give the silyl-osmium(IV)-trihydride derivatives OsH3(SiR3){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} [SiR3 = SiEt3 (2), SiPh3 (3), SiMe(OSiMe3)2 (4)] and H2. The activation takes place via an unsaturated tetrahydride intermediate, resulting from the dissociation of the oxygen atom of the pincer ligand 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene (xant(PiPr2)2). This intermediate, which has been trapped to form OsH4{κ2-P,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}(PiPr3) (5), coordinates the Si-H bond of the silanes to subsequently undergo a homolytic cleavage. Kinetics of the reaction along with the observed primary isotope effect demonstrates that the Si-H rupture is the rate-determining step of the activation. Complex 2 reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and 1-phenyl-1-propyne. The reaction with the former affords Os{C≡CC(OH)Ph2}2{=C=CHC(OH)Ph2}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (6), which catalyzes the conversion of the propargylic alcohol into (E)-2-(5,5-diphenylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)-1,1-diphenylethan-1-ol, via (Z)-enynediol. In methanol, the hydroxyvinylidene ligand of 6 dehydrates to allenylidene, generating Os{C≡CC(OH)Ph2}2{=C=C=CPh2}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (7). The reaction of 2 with 1-phenyl-1-propyne leads to OsH{κ1-C,η2-[C6H4CH2CH=CH2]}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (8) and PhCH2CH=CH(SiEt3).

Abstract
Members of a new class of complexes, 2(CF3 ), 2(H), 2(Br), 2(I), and 2(OCH3 ), have been synthesized in a one-pot method involving the treatment of osmanaphthalynes bearing corresponding substituents (1(CF3 ), 1(H), 1(Br), 1(I), and 1(OCH3 )) with trimethylphosphine (PMe3 ) and water. The main reaction process involves two steps, namely a ligand-exchange with trimethylphosphine and nucleophilic addition of water to the Os≡C bond of the osmanaphthalyne. The substituents have a significant influence on the rate of the reaction, as befits a nucleophilic addition. Fortunately, the key intermediate [1(OCH3 )]' could be successfully captured, and the detailed reaction mechanism has been explored with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which were in excellent agreement with the experimental findings. All of the target complexes have been fully characterized by 1 H, 31 P{1 H}, and 13 C{1 H} NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis.

An unusual 1,3-hydrogen shift from the metal center to the Cβ atom of the C3-chain of the allenylidene
ligand in a hydride-osmium(II)-allenylidene complex is the beginning
of several interesting transformations in the cumulene. The hydride-osmium(II)-allenylidene
complex was prepared in two steps, starting from the tetrahydride
dimer [(Os(H···H){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]})2(μ-Cl)2][BF4]2 (1). Complex 1 reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol to give the hydride-osmium(II)-alkenylcarbyne
[OsHCl(≡CCH=CPh2){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]BF4 (2), which yields OsHCl(=C=C=CPh2){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (3) by selective abstraction of the Cβ–H hydrogen atom of the alkenylcarbyne ligand
with KtBuO. Complex 3 is
metastable. According to results of DFT calculations, the migration
of the hydride ligand to the Cβ atom of the cumulene
has an activation energy too high to occur in a concerted manner.
However, the migration can be catalyzed by water, alcohols, and aldehydes.
The resulting alkenylcarbyne-osmium(0) intermediate is unstable and
evolves into a 7:3 mixture of the hydride-osmium(II)-indenylidene
OsHCl(=CIndPh){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (4) and the osmanaphthalene
OsCl(C9H6Ph){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (5). Protonation
of 4 with HBF4 leads to the elongated dihydrogen
complex [OsCl(η2-H2)(=CIndPh){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]BF4 (6), while the protonation
of 5 regenerates 2. In contrast to 4, complex 6 evolves to a half-sandwich indenyl
derivative, [Os(η5-IndPh)H{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}][BF4]Cl
(7). Phenylacetylene also provokes the 1,3-hydrogen shift
in 3. However, it does not participate in the migration.
In contrast to water, alcohols, and aldehydes, it stabilizes the resulting
alkenylcarbyne to afford [Os(≡CCH=CPh2)(η2-HC≡CPh){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]Cl (8).

Abstract
The reduction of the N≡C bond of benzonitriles promoted by OsH6(PiPr3)2 (1) has been studied. Complex 1 releases a H2 molecule and coordinates 2,6-dimethylbenzonitrile to afford the tetrahydride OsH4{κ1- N-(N≡CC6H3Me2)}(PiPr3)2 (2), which is thermally stable toward the insertion of the nitrile into one of the Os-H bonds. In contrast to 2,6-dimethylbenzonitrile, benzonitrile and 2-methylbenzonitrile undergo insertion, via Os(η2-N≡CR) intermediates, to give the azavinylidene derivatives OsH3(═N═CC6H4R)(PiPr3)2 [R = H (3) or Me (4)]. The analysis by means of computational tools (EDA-NOCV) of the bonding situation in these compounds suggests that the donor-acceptor nature of the osmium azavinylidene bond dominates over the mixed electron-sharing/donor-acceptor and pure electron-sharing bonding modes. The N atom is strongly nucleophilic, whereas one of the hydrides is electrophilic. In spite of the different nature of these centers, the migration of the latter to the N atom is kinetically prevented. However, the use of water as a proton shuttle allows hydride migration, as a consequence of a significant decrease in the activation barrier. The resulting phenylaldimine intermediates evolve by means of orthometalation to give OsH3{κ2- N, C-(NH═CHC6H3R)}(PiPr3)2 [R = H (5) or Me (6)]. The presence of electrophilic and nucleophilic centers in 3 confers upon it the ability to activate σ-bonds, including H2 and pinacolborane (HBpin). The reaction with the latter gives OsH3{κ2- N, C-[N(Bpin)═CHC6H4]}(PiPr3)2 (7).

Abstract
Small modifications on the co-ligands of complexes containing two coordinated hydrogen atoms can determine the elongated dihydrogen versus compressed dihydride nature of these species and therefore their chemical behavior. 2,6-diphenylpyridine favors the formation of the osmium(IV) cation [OsH2 (C6 H4 pyPh)(PiPr3 )2 ]+ , whereas 2-phenoxy-6-phenylpyridine, which contains an oxygen atom between the heterocycle and one of the phenyl groups, stabilizes the osmium(II) elongated dihydrogen species [Os(C6 H4 pyOPh)(η2 -H2 )(PiPr3 )2 ]+ . In contrast to the latter, the former shows a marked tendency to undergo reductive elimination of the heterocycle.

Abstract
A MHC6 complex of a platinum group metal with a capped octahedral arrangement of donor atoms around the metal center has been characterized. This osmium compound OsH{κ(2) -C,C-(PhBIm-C6 H4 )}3 , which reacts with HBF4 to afford the 14 e(-) species [Os{κ(2) -C,C-(PhBIm-C6 H4 )}(Ph2 BIm)2 ]BF4 stabilized by two agostic interactions, has been obtained by reaction of OsH6 (PiPr3 )2 with N,N'-diphenylbenzimidazolium chloride ([Ph2 BImH]Cl) in the presence of NEt3 . Its formation takes place through the C,C,C-pincer compound OsH2 {κ(3) -C,C,C-(C6 H4 -BIm-C6 H4 )}(PiPr3 )2 , the dihydrogen derivative OsCl{κ(2) -C,C-(PhBIm-C6 H4 )}(η(2) -H2 )(PiPr3 )2 , and the five-coordinate osmium(II) species OsCl{κ(2) -C,C-(PhBIm-C6 H4 )}(PiPr3 )2 .

Abstract
The synthesis and reactivity of a Co(I) pincer complex [Co(ϰ(3) P,CH,P-P(CH)P(NMe) -iPr)(CO)2](+) featuring an η(2)-C(aryl)-H agostic bond is described. This complex was obtained by protonation of the Co(I) complex [Co(PCP(NMe) -iPr)(CO)2]. The Co(III) hydride complex [Co(PCP(NMe) -iPr)(CNtBu)2(H)](+) was obtained upon protonation of [Co(PCP(NMe) -iPr)(CNtBu)2]. Three ways to cleave the agostic C-H bond are presented. First, owing to the acidity of the agostic proton, treatment with pyridine results in facile deprotonation (C-H bond cleavage) and reformation of [Co(PCP(NMe) -iPr)(CO)2]. Second, C-H bond cleavage is achieved upon exposure of [Co(ϰ(3)P,CH,P-P(CH)P(NMe) -iPr)(CO)2](+) to oxygen or TEMPO to yield the paramagnetic Co(II) PCP complex [Co(PCP(NMe) -iPr)(CO)2](+). Finally, replacement of one CO ligand in [Co(ϰ(3) P,CH,P-P(CH)P(NMe) -iPr)(CO)2](+) by CNtBu promotes the rapid oxidative addition of the agostic η(2) -C(aryl)-H bond to give two isomeric hydride complexes of the type [Co(PCP(NMe) -iPr)(CNtBu)(CO)(H)](+).

The amide-directed synthesis of five-coordinate
osmium alkylidene derivatives from alkynes is reported. These types
of complexes, which have been elusive until now because of the tendency
of osmium to give hydride alkylidyne species, are prepared by reaction
of the dihydride OsH2Cl2(PiPr3)2 (1) with terminal alkynes containing
a distal amide group. Complex 1 reacts with N-phenylhex-5-ynamide and N-phenylhepta-6-ynamide
to give OsCl2{=C(CH3)(CH2)nNH(CO)Ph}(PiPr3)2 (n = 3 (2), 4 (3)). The relative position of carbonyl and NH groups in the organic
substrates has no influence on the reaction. Thus, treatment of 1 with N-(pent-4-yn-1-yl)benzamide leads
to OsCl2{=C(CH3)(CH2)3NHC(O)Ph}(PiPr3)2 (4). The new compounds are intermediate species in the cleavage
of the C–C triple bond of the alkynes. Under mild conditions,
they undergo the rupture of the Cα–CH3 bond of the alkylidene, which comes from the alkyne triple
bond, to afford six-coordinate hydride–alkylidyne derivatives.
In dichloromethane, complex 2 gives a 10:7 mixture of
OsHCl2{≡C(CH2)3C(O)NHPh}(PiPr3)2 (5) and OsHCl2{≡CCH(CH3)(CH2)2C(O)NHPh}(PiPr3)2 (6). The first complex
contains a linear separation between the alkylidyne Cα atom and the amide group, whereas the spacer is branched in the
second complex. In contrast to the case for 2, complex 4 selectively affords OsHCl2{≡C(CH2)3NHC(O)Ph}(PiPr3)2 (7). In spite of their instability, these compounds give the
alkylidene–allene metathesis, being a useful entry to five-coordinate
vinylidene complexes, including the dicarbon-disubstituted OsCl2(=C=CMe2)(PiPr3)2 (8) and the monosubstituted OsCl2(=C=CHCy)(PiPr3)2 (9).
