Abstract
The search for an iron analog of the established ruthenium-based catalysts containing methylene-extended 4,5-bis(diorganophosphinomethyl)acridine ligands, [FeHCl(CO)(LR)], resulted in the discovery of a bidentate coordination mode of these usually tridentate pincer ligands toward iron. The acridines nitrogen atom does not coordinate to iron, leading to the formation of iron diphos-type complexes with unusually large cis bite angles of up to 124° as well as trans bite angles around 155°. The iron-containing complexes [FeCl2(κ2-LR)] (R = iPr, Ph), [FeX2(κ2-LCy)] (X = Cl, Br) and [Fe(CO)3(κ2-LR)] (R = iPr, Cy) have been isolated in crystalline form and characterized by spectroscopic methods and mass spectrometry. Their structures were verified unambiguously through X-ray diffraction. The stability of the iron(II) complexes decreased in the order Cy > Ph > iPr and Cl > Br > I, although all iron(II) complexes were found to be relatively stable enough for short-term handling in air in the solid state. Notably, no iron(0) complex of the phenyl derivative could be isolated. The iron(0) complex [Fe(CO)3(κ2-LCy)] was found to be significantly more stable toward hydrolysis and oxygen compared to [Fe(CO)3(κ2-LiPr)] and can be stored in air for months without significant decomposition in the solid state, while [Fe(CO)3(κ2-LiPr)] decomposes in air within seconds. The decomposition products [FeI2(κ2-O2LCy)], [{Fe(CO)3(κ2-HLR)}2] (R = iPr, Cy) and [FeCl2(CO)2(κ1-LCy)(κ1-OLCy)] were identified and characterized crystallographically. The iron(0) complex [Fe(CO)3(κ2-LCy)] is oxidized by [Fe(Cp)2](BPh4) to give the paramagnetic, low-spin iron(I) cation [Fe(CO)3(κ2-LCy)]+. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of the highly sensitive cation as well as density functional theory calculations suggest a partial delocalization of the unpaired electron over the three carbonyl ligands and the acridines aromatic ring system. The catalytic activity and photophysical properties of the complexes have been preliminarily investigated.

Abstract
Cobalt complexes containing the 2,6-diaminopyridine-substituted PNP pincer (iPrPNMeNP = 2,6-(iPr2PNMe)2(C5H3N)) were synthesized. A combination of solid-state structures and investigation of the cobalt(I)/(II) redox potential established a relatively rigid and electron-donating chelating ligand as compared to iPrPNP (iPrPNP = 2,6-(iPr2PCH2)2(C5H3N)). Based on a buried volume analysis, the two pincer ligands are sterically indistinguishable. Nearly planar, diamagnetic, four-coordinate complexes were observed independent of the field strength (chloride, alkyl, aryl) of the fourth ligand completing the coordination sphere of the metal. Computational studies supported a higher barrier for C-H oxidative addition, largely a result of the increased rigidity of the pincer. The increased oxidative addition barrier resulted in stabilization of (iPrPNMeNP)Co(I) complexes, enabling the characterization of the cobalt boryl and the cobalt hydride dimer by X-ray crystallography. Moreover, (iPrPNMeNP)CoMe served as an efficient precatalyst for alkene hydroboration likely because of the reduced propensity to undergo oxidative addition, demonstrating that reactivity and catalytic performance can be tuned by rigidity of pincer ligands.

Abstract
Iron dihydride complexes are key intermediates in many iron-catalyzed reactions. Previous efforts to study molecules of this type have led to the discovery of a remarkably stable cis-FeH2 complex, which is supported by bis[2-(diisopropylphosphino)phenyl]phosphine (iPrPPHP) along with CO. In this work, the hydrogen on the central phosphorus has been replaced with a methyl group, and the corresponding iron carbonyl dichloride, hydrido chloride, and dihydride complexes have been synthesized. The addition of the methyl group favors the anti configuration for the Me-P-Fe-H moiety and the trans geometry for the H-Fe-CO motif, which is distinctively different from the iPrPPHP system. Furthermore, it increases the thermal stability of the dihydride complex, cis-(iPrPPMeP)Fe(CO)H2 (iPrPPMeP = bis[2-(diisopropylphosphino)phenyl]methylphosphine). The variations in stereochemistry and compound stability contribute greatly to the differences between the two PPP systems in reactions with PhCHO, CS2, and HCO2H.

Abstract
In the present work we have prepared and fully characterized several Fe(0) complexes of the type [Fe(PNP)(CO)2] treating Fe(II) complexes [Fe(PNP)(Cl)2] with KC8 in the presence of carbon monoxide. While complexes [Fe(PNPNMe-iPr)(CO)2], [Fe(PNPNEt-iPr)(CO)2] adopt a trigonal bipyramidal geometry, the bulkier and more electron rich [Fe(PNPNH-tBu)(CO)2] is closer to a square pyramidal geometry. Mössbauer spectra showed isomer shifts very close to 0 and similar to those reported for Fe(I) systems. Quadrupole splitting values range between 2.2 and 2.7 mm s-1 both in experiments and DFT calculations, while those of Fe(I) complexes are much smaller (∼0.6 mm s-1).

Abstract
Despite their promising metal-ligand cooperative reactivity, PCcarbene P pincer ligands are rarely reported for first-row transition-metal centres. Using a dehydration methodology, we report access to an Fe0 PCcarbene P pincer complex (1) that proceeds via an isolated α-hydroxylalkyl hydrido complex (3). Reversible carbonyl migration to the carbene position in 1 is found to allow coordination chemistry and E-H bond addition (E=H, B, Cl) across the iron-carbene linkage, representing a unique mechanism for metal-ligand cooperativity. The PCcarbene P pincer ligand is also found to stabilize formal FeII , FeI , and Fe-I oxidation states, as demonstrated with synthesis and characterization of the complexes [11-X][BArF 20 ] (X=Br, I), 12, and K[13]. Compound K[13] is found to be highly reactive, and abstracts hydrogen from a range of aliphatic C-H sources. Computational analysis by DFT suggests that the formal FeI and Fe-I complexes contain significant carbene radical character. The ability of the PCcarbene P ligand scaffold to partake in metal-ligand cooperativity and to support a range of iron oxidation states renders it as potentially useful in many catalytic applications.

Abstract
The synthesis of macrocyclic variants of commonly employed phosphine-based pincer ligands derived from lutidine (PNP-14) and 2,6-dihydroxypyridine (PONOP-14) is described, where the P-donors are trans-substituted with a tetradecamethylene linker. This was accomplished using an eight-step procedure involving borane protection, ring-closing olefin metathesis, chromatographic separation from the cis-substituted diastereomers, and borane deprotection. The rhodium coordination chemistry of these ligands has been explored, aided by the facile synthesis of 2,2'-biphenyl (biph) adducts [Rh(PNP-14)(biph)][BArF4] and [Rh(PONOP-14)(biph)][BArF4] (ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3). Subsequent hydrogenolysis enabled generation of dihydrogen, ethylene and carbonyl derivatives; notably the ν(CO) bands of the carbonyl complexes provide a means to compare the donor properties of the new pincer ligands with established acyclic congeners.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a homologous series of five-coordinate rhodium(III) and iridium(III) complexes of PNP (2,6-( tBu2PCH2)2C5H3N) and PONOP (2,6-( tBu2PO)2C5H3N) pincer ligands are described: [M(PNP)(biph)][BArF4] (M = Rh, 1a; Ir, 1b; biph = 2,2'-biphenyl; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) and [M(PONOP)(biph)][BArF4] (M = Rh, 2a; Ir, 2b). These complexes are structurally dynamic in solution, exhibiting pseudorotation of the biph ligand on the 1H NMR time scale (Δ G⧧ ca. 60 kJ mol-1) and, in the case of the flexible PNP complexes, undergoing interconversion between helical and puckered pincer ligand conformations (Δ G⧧ ca. 10 kJ mol-1). Remarkably, the latter is sufficiently facile that it persists in the solid state, leading to temperature-dependent disorder in the associated X-ray crystal structures. Reaction of 1 and 2 with CO occurs for the iridium congeners 1b and 2b, leading to the formation of sterically congested carbonyl derivatives.

Abstract
Treatment of anhydrous FeX2 (X = Cl, Br) with 1 equiv. of the asymmetric chiral PNP pincer ligands PNP-R,TAD (R = iPr, tBu) with an R,R-TADDOL (TAD) moiety afforded complexes of the general formula [Fe(PNP)X2]. In the solid state these complexes adopt a tetrahedral geometry with the PNP ligand coordinated in κ(2)P,N-fashion, as shown by X-ray crystallography and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetization studies led to a magnetic moment very close to 4.9μB reflecting the expected four unpaired d-electrons (quintet ground state). In solution there are equilibria between [Fe(κ(3)P,N,P-PNP-R,TAD)X2] and [Fe(κ(2)P,N-PNP-R,TAD)X2] complexes, i.e., the PNP-R,TAD ligand is hemilabile. At -50 °C these equilibria are slow and signals of the non-coordinated P-TAD arm of the κ(2)P,N-PNP-R,TAD ligand can be detected by (31)P{(1)H} NMR spectroscopy. Addition of BH3 to a solution of [Fe(PNP-iPr,TAD)Cl2] leads to selective boronation of the pendant P-TAD arm shifting the equilibrium towards the four-coordinate complex [Fe(κ(2)P,N-PNP-iPr,TAD(BH3))Cl2]. DFT calculations corroborate the existence of equilibria between four- and five-coordinated complexes. Addition of CO to [Fe(PNP-iPr,TAD)X2] in solution yields the diamagnetic octahedral complexes trans-[Fe(κ(3)P,N,P-PNP-iPr,TAD)(CO)X2], which react further with Ag(+) salts in the presence of CO to give the cationic complexes trans-[Fe(κ(3)P,N,P-PNP-iPr,TAD)(CO)2X](+). CO addition most likely takes place at the five coordinate complex [Fe(κ(3)P,N,P-PNP-iPr,TAD)X2]. The mechanism for the CO addition was also investigated by DFT and the most favorable path obtained corresponds to the rearrangement of the pincer ligand first from a κ(2)P,N- to a κ(3)P,N,P-coordination mode followed by CO coordination to [Fe(κ(3)P,N,P-PNP-iPr,TAD)X2]. Complexes bearing tBu substituents do not react with CO. Moreover, in the solid state none of the tetrahedral complexes are able to bind CO.

Abstract
A series of bis-phosphinite and bis-phosphite PONOP iron complexes were prepared and characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy. Bis-phosphinite PONOP iron dichloride complexes (RPONOP)FeCl2 (RPONOP = 2,6-(R2PO)2(C5H3N) and R = iPr, tBu) were prepared through complexation of the free ligands with FeCl2 and their solid-state structures were determined. Bis-phosphite PONOP iron complexes (OEtPONOP)Fe(PMe3)2 and (CatPONOP)Fe(PMe3)2 (Cat = catechol) were synthesized through complexation of the free ligands to Fe(PMe3)4. Carbonyl complexes of both bis-phosphinite and bis-phosphite PONOP were prepared and characterized by IR. The monocarbonyl (iPrPONOP)Fe(CO)Cl2 was accessed through exposure of (iPrPONOP)FeCl2 to an atmosphere of CO and the CO stretching frequency was observed at 1969 cm-1. Dicarbonyl complexes (iPrPONOP)Fe(CO)2 and (OEtPONOP)Fe(CO)2 were accessed through reduction of the corresponding chloride complexes with sodium amalgam under a CO atmosphere. Carbonyl stretching frequencies for (iPrPONOP)Fe(CO)2 and (OEtPONOPFe)(CO)2 were observed at 1824 and 1876 cm-1, and at 1871 and 1927 cm-1 respectively. The bis-phosphite PONOP complexes exhibit a less electron rich metal center than the bis-phosphinite PONOP complexes, as would be expected based on the stronger π-acceptor character of these ligands. The electronic properties of the bis-phosphinite PONOP and bis-phosphite PONOP iron complexes are intermediate between previously reported PNP and PDI iron complexes, with the PONOP ligands exhibiting stronger electron donating ability than PDI ligands, but promoting a less electron rich metal center than found in analogous PNP iron complexes.

Abstract
Anhydrous CoCl2 or [NiCl2(DME)] reacts with the ligand PCPMe-iPr (1) in the presence of nBuLi to afford the 15e and 16e square planar complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (2) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (3), respectively. Complex 2 is a paramagnetic d7 low-spin complex, which is a useful precursor for a series of Co(I), Co(II), and Co(III) PCP complexes. Complex 2 reacts readily with CO and pyridine to afford the five-coordinate square-pyramidal 17e complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(CO)Cl] (4) and [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(py)Cl] (5), respectively, while in the presence of Ag+ and CO the cationic complex [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(CO)2]+ (6) is afforded. The effective magnetic moments μeff of all Co(II) complexes were derived from the temperature dependence of the inverse molar magnetic susceptibility by SQUID measurements and are in the range 1.9 to 2.4 μB. This is consistent with a d7 low-spin configuration with some degree of spin-orbit coupling. Oxidation of 2 with CuCl2 affords the paramagnetic Co(III) PCP complex [Co(PCPMe-iPr)Cl2] (7), while the synthesis of the diamagnetic Co(I) complex [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(CO)2] (8) was achieved by stirring 2 in toluene with KC8 in the presence of CO. Finally, the cationic 16e Ni(II) PCP complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(CO)]+ (10) was obtained by reacting complex 3 with 1 equiv of AgSbF6 in the presence of CO. The reactivity of CO addition to Co(I), Co(II), and Ni(II) PCP square planar complexes of the type [M(PCPMe-iPr)(CO)] n (n = +1, 0) was investigated by DFT calculations, showing that formation of the Co species, 6 and 8, is thermodynamically favorable, while Ni(II) maintains the 16e configuration since CO addition is unfavorable in this case. X-ray structures of most complexes are provided and discussed. A structural feature of interest is that the apical CO ligand in 4 deviates significantly from linearity, with a Co-C-O angle of 170.0(1)°. The DFT-calculated value is 172°, clearly showing that this is not a packing but an electronic effect.

Abstract
The bis-carbonyl Fe(II) complex trans-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2Cl]+ reacts with Zn as reducing agent under a dihydrogen atmosphere to give the Fe(II) hydride complex cis-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2H]+ in 97% isolated yield. A crucial step in this reaction seems to be the reduction of the acidic NH protons of the PNP-iPr ligand to afford H2 and the coordinatively unsaturated intermediate [Fe(PNPH-iPr)(CO)2]+ bearing a dearomatized pyridine moiety. This species is able to bind and heterolytically cleave H2 to give cis-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2H]+. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied by DFT calculations. The proposed mechanism was supported by deuterium labeling experiments using D2 and the N-deuterated isotopologue of trans-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2Cl]+. While in the first case deuterium was partially incorporated into both N and Fe sites, in the latter case no reaction took place. In addition, the N-methylated complex trans-[Fe(PNPMe-iPr)(CO)2Cl]+ was prepared, showing no reactions with Zn and H2 under the same reaction conditions. An alternative synthesis of cis-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2H]+ was developed utilizing the Fe(0) complex [Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2]. This compound is obtained in high yield by treatment of either trans-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2Cl]+ or [Fe(PNP-iPr)Cl2] with an excess of NaHg or a stoichiometric amount of KC8 in the presence of carbon monoxide. Protonation of [Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2] with HBF4 gave the hydride complex cis-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2H]+. X-ray structures of both cis-[Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2H]+ and [Fe(PNP-iPr)(CO)2] are presented.
