A Mild Protocol To Generate Uranium(IV) Mixed-Ligand Metallocene Complexes using Copper(I) Iodide

Facile Oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV) Using Cu(I) Salts

The synthesis, luminescence, and electrochemical properties of the Ce(III) compound, [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(THF)], 1, were investigated. Based on the electrochemical data, treatment of 1 with CuX (X = Cl, Br, I) results in the formation of the corresponding Ce(IV) complexes, [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(X)]. Each complex has been characterized using NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as structurally determined using X-ray crystallography. Additionally, the treatment of [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(Br)] with AgF results in the formation of the putative [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(F)]. The electronic structure of these Ce(IV)-X complexes was investigated by bond analyses and the Ce(IV)-F moiety using quantum chemistry NMR calculations.

Experimental and Computational Studies on Uranium Diazomethanediide Complexes

Uranium diazomethanediide complexes can be prepared and their synthesis, structure and reactivity were explored. Reaction of the uranium imido compound [η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 Si)3 C5 H2 ]2 U=N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (1) or [η5 -1,3-(Me3 C)2 C5 H3 ]2 U=N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (4) with Me3 SiCHN2 cleanly yields the first isocyanoimido metal complexes [η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 Si)3 C5 H2 ]2 U(=NNC)(μ-CNN=)U(dmap)[η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 Si)3 C5 H2 ]2 (2) and {[η5 -1,3-(Me3 C)2 C5 H3 ]2 U[μ-(=NNC)]}6 (5), respectively. Both compounds exhibit remarkable thermal stability and were fully characterized. According to density functional theory (DFT) studies the bonding between the Cp2 U2+ and [NNC]2- moieties is strongly polarized with a significant 5 f orbital contribution, which is also reflected in the reactivity of these complexes. For example, complex 5 acts as a nucleophile toward alkylsilyl halides and engages in a [2+2] cycloaddition with CS2 , but no reaction occurs in the presence of internal alkynes.

Identification of the U(V) complex (C5Me5)2UVI(NSiMe3) in the reaction of (C5Me5)2UIIII(THF) with N3SiMe3

The U(V) imido complex (C₅Me₅)₂U^VI(NSiMe₃), 1, was crystallographically characterized from the reaction of (C₅Me₅)₂U^IIII(THF) with N₃SiMe₃ which demonstrates that it can be an intermediate in the reaction which ultimately forms (C₅Me₅)₂U^VI(NSiMe₃)₂ and (C₅Me₅)₂U^IVI₂. U(V) intermediates have been proposed in such reactions, but have not been previously observed. The direct observation of 1 provides insight into the reaction mechanisms of U(III) compounds with azide reagents.

Nitrogen activation and cleavage by a multimetallic uranium complex

Multimetallic-multielectron cooperativity plays a key role in the metal-mediated cleavage of N2 to nitrides (N3-). In particular, low-valent uranium complexes coupled with strong alkali metal reducing agents can lead to N2 cleavage, but often, it is ambiguous how many electrons are transferred from the uranium centers to cleave N2. Herein, we designed new dinuclear uranium nitride complexes presenting a combination of electronically diverse ancillary ligands to promote the multielectron transformation of N2. Two heteroleptic diuranium nitride complexes, [K{UIV(OSi(O t Bu)3)(N(SiMe3)2)2}2(μ-N)] (1) and [Cs{UIV(OSi(O t Bu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)] (3-Cs), containing different combinations of OSi(O t Bu)3 and N(SiMe3)2 ancillary ligands, were synthesized. We found that both complexes could be reduced to their U(iii)/U(iv) analogues, and the complex, [K2{UIV/III(OSi(O t Bu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)] (6-K), could be further reduced to a putative U(iii)/U(iii) species that is capable of promoting the 4e- reduction of N2, yielding the N2 4-complex [K3{UV(OSi(O t Bu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)(μ-η2:η2-N2)], 7. Parallel N2 reduction pathways were also identified, leading to the isolation of N2 cleavage products, [K3{UVI(OSi(O t Bu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)([triple bond, length as m-dash]N)}(μ-N)2{UV(OSi(O t Bu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}]2, 8, and [K4{(OSi(O t Bu)3)2UV)([triple bond, length as m-dash]N)}(μ-NH)(μ-κ2:C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)-{UV(OSi(O t Bu)3)2][K(N(SiMe3)2]2, 9. These complexes provide the first example of N2 cleavage to nitride by a uranium complex in the absence of reducing alkali metals.

Synthesis of a heterobimetallic actinide nitride and an analysis of its bonding

Reaction of [K(DME)][Th{N(R)(SiMe₂ CH₂)}₂(NR₂)] (R = SiMe₃) with 1 equiv. of [U(NR₂)₃(NH₂)] (1) in THF, in the presence of 18-crown-6, results in formation of a bridged uranium-thorium nitride complex, [K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂][(NR₂)₃U^IV(μ-N)Th^IV(NR₂)₃] (2), which can be isolated in 48% yield after work-up. Complex 2 is the first isolable molecular mixed-actinide nitride complex. Also formed in the reaction is the methylene-bridged mixed-actinide nitride, [K(18-crown-6)][K(18-crown-6)(Et₂O)₂][(NR₂)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²-C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NR)Th(NR₂)₂]₂ (3), which can be isolated in 34% yield after work-up. Complex 3 is likely generated by deprotonation of a methyl group in 2 by [NR₂]^-, yielding the new μ-CH₂ moiety and HNR₂. Reaction of 2 with 0.5 equiv. of I₂ results in formation of a U^V/Th^IV bridged nitride, [(NR₂)₃U^V(μ-N)Th^IV(NR₂)₃] (4), which can be isolated in 42% yield after work-up. The electronic structure of 4 was analyzed with EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and NIR-visible spectroscopy. This analysis demonstrated that the energies of 5f orbitals of 4 are largely determined by the strong ligand field exerted by the nitride ligand.

Crystal structures of metallocene complexes with uranium-germanium bonds

The first structural examples of complexes with uranium-germanium bonds are presented, namely, bis-[3,5-bis-(tri-fluoro-meth-yl)phenyl-2κC 1](hydrido-2κH)(iodido-1κI)bis-[1,1(η5)-penta-methyl-cyclo-penta-dien-yl]germaniumuranium(Ge-U), [GeU(C10H15)2(C8H3F6)2HI], and bis-[3,5-bis-(tri-fluoro-meth-yl)phenyl-2κC 1](fluorido-1κI)(hydrido-2κH)bis-[1,1(η5)-penta-methyl-cyclo-penta-dien-yl]germaniumuranium(Ge-U), [GeU(C10H15)2(C8H3F6)2FH]. The two complexes both have a long U-Ge bond [distances of 3.0428 (7) and 3.0524 (7) Å].

Reductive Reactivity of the 4f75d1 Gd(II) Ion in {GdII[N(SiMe3)2]3}-: Structural Characterization of Products of Coupling, Bond Cleavage, Insertion, and Radical Reactions

The reductive reactivity of a Ln(II) ion with a nontraditional 4fⁿ5d¹ electron configuration has been investigated by studying reactions of the {Gd^II(N(SiMe₃)₂)₃]}^- anion with a variety of reagents that survey the many reaction pathways available to this ion. The chemistry of both [K(18-c-6)₂]⁺ and [K(crypt)]⁺ salts (18-c-6 = 18-crown-6; crypt = 2.2.2-cryptand) was examined to study the effect of the countercation. CS₂ reacts with the crown salt [K(18-c-6)₂][Gd(NR₂)₃] (1) to generate the bimetallic (CS₃)^2- complex {[K(18-c-6)](μ₃-CS₃-κS,κ²S',S'')Gd(NR₂)₂]}₂, which contains two trithiocarbonate dianions that bridge Gd(III) centers and a potassium ion coordinated by 18-c-6. In contrast, the only crystalline product isolated from the reaction of CS₂ with the crypt salt [K(crypt)][Gd(NR₂)₃] (2) is [K(crypt)]{(R₂N)₂Gd[SCS(CH₂)Si(Me₂)N(SiMe₃)-κN,κS]}, which has a CS₂ unit inserted into a cyclometalated amide ligand. Complexes 1 and 2 reductively couple pyridine to form bridging dipyridyl moieties, (NC₅H₄-C₅H₄N)^2-, that generate bimetallic complexes differing only in the countercation, {[K(18-c-6)(C₅H₅N)₂]}₂{[(R₂N)₃Gd]₂[μ-(NC₅H₄-C₅H₄N)₂]} and [K(crypt)]₂{[(R₂N)₃Gd]₂[μ-(NC₅H₄-C₅H₄N)₂]}. Complexes 1 and 2 also show similar reactivity with (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) to form the (TEMPO)^- complexes [K(18-c-6)][(R₂N)₃Gd(η¹-ONC₅H₆Me₄)] and [K(crypt)][(R₂N)₃Gd(η¹-ONC₅H₆Me₄)], respectively. The first example of a bimetallic coordination complex containing a Bi-Gd bond, [K(crypt)][(R₂N)₃Gd(BiPh₂)], was obtained by treating 2 with BiPh₃.

Homoleptic Perchlorophenyl "Ate" Complexes of Thorium(IV) and Uranium(IV)

The reaction of AnCl₄(DME)_n (An = Th, n = 2; U, n = 0) with 5 equiv of LiC₆Cl₅ in Et₂O resulted in the formation of homoleptic actinide-aryl "ate" complexes [Li(DME)₂(Et₂O)]₂[Li(DME)₂][Th(C₆Cl₅)₅]₃ ([Li][1]) and [Li(Et₂O)₄][U(C₆Cl₅)₅] ([Li][2]). Similarly, the reaction of AnCl₄(DME)_n (An = Th, n = 2; U, n = 0) with 3 equiv of LiC₆Cl₅ in Et₂O resulted in the formation of heteroleptic actinide-aryl "ate" complexes [Li(DME)₂(Et₂O)][Li(Et₂O)₂][ThCl₃(C₆Cl₅)₃] ([Li][3]) and [Li(Et₂O)₃][UCl₂(C₆Cl₅)₃] ([Li][4]). Density functional calculations show that the An-C_ipso σ-bonds are considerably more covalent for the uranium complexes vs the thorium analogues, in line with past results. Additionally, good agreement between experiment and calculations is obtained for the ¹³C_ipso NMR chemical shifts in [Li][1] and [Li][3]. The calculations demonstrate a deshielding by ca. 29 ppm from spin-orbit coupling effects originating at Th, which is a direct consequence of 5f orbital participation in the Th-C bonds.

How the Ancillary Ligand X Drives the Redox Properties of Biscyclopentadienyl Pentavalent Uranium Cp2U(═N-Ar)X Complexes

Relativistic zero order regular approximation (ZORA) density functional theory computations, coupled with the conductor-like screening model for solvation effects, are used to investigate the redox properties of a series of biscyclopentadienyl pentavalent uranium(V) complexes Cp₂U(═N-Ar)X (Ar = 2,6-Me₂-C₆H₃; X = OTf, C₆F₅, SPh, C═CPh, NPh₂, Ph, Me, OPh, N(TMS)₂, N═CPh₂). Regarding the U^V/U^IV and U^VI/U^V couple systems, a linear correlation (R² ∼ 0.99) is obtained at the ZORA/BP86/TZP level, between the calculated ionization energies and the measured experimental E_1/2 half-wave oxidation potentials (U^VI/U^V) and between the electron affinities and the reduction potentials E_1/2 (U^V/U^IV). The study brings to light the importance of solvation effects that are needed in order to achieve a good agreement between the theory and experiment. Introducing spin-orbit coupling corrections slightly improves this agreement. Both the singly occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the neutral U^V complexes exhibit a majority 5f orbital character. The frontier molecular orbitals show a substantial ancillary ligand X σ and/or π character that drives the redox properties. Moreover, our investigations allow estimating the redox potentials of the X = Ph, X = C₆F₅, and N(TMS)₂ U^V complexes for which no experimental electrochemical data exist.

C-H Bond Activation by an Isolated Dinuclear U(III)/U(IV) Nitride

Synthetic studies of bimetallic uranium nitride complexes with the N(SiMe₃)₂ ligand have generated a new nitride complex of U(III), which is highly reactive toward C-H bonds and H₂. Treatment of the previously reported U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex [Na(DME)₃][((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²:CN̵-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), 1, with 2 equiv of HNEt₃BPh₃ yielded the cationic U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)][BPh₄] (THF = tetrahydrofuran), 3, by successive protonolysis of one N(SiMe₃)₂ ligand and the uranium-methylene bond. Reduction of 3 with KC₈ afforded a rare example of a U(III) nitride, namely, the U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)], 4. Complex 4 is highly reactive and undergoes 1,2-addition of the C-H bond of the N(SiMe₃)₂ ligand across the uranium-nitride moiety to give the U(III)/U(IV) imide cyclometalate complex, [((Me₃Si)₂N)₂(THF)U(μ-NH)(μ-κ²:C,N̵-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)U(N(SiMe₃)₂))(THF)], 5. Complex 4 also reacts with toluene at -80 °C to yield an inverse sandwich imide complex arising from C-H bond activation of toluene, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U(μ-NH)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(C₇H₈)], 6. Complex 4 effects the heterolytic cleavage of the C-H of phenylacetylene to yield the imide acetylide [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-N)][((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(η¹-CCPh)(μ₂-NH)(μ₂-η²:η¹-CCPh)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂], 7. Complex 4 also reacts with H₂ to produce an imide hydride U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₂U(THF)}₂(μ-NH)(μ-H)], 9. These data demonstrate that nitride complexes of U(III) are accessible with amide ligands and show the high reactivity of molecular U(III) nitrides in C-H bond activation.

Uranium(iii) complexes supported by hydrobis(mercaptoimidazolyl)borates: synthesis and oxidation chemistry

The reaction of [UI3(thf)4] with the sodium or lithium salts of hydrobis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate ligands ([H(R)B(timMe)2]-) in a 1 : 2 ratio, in tetrahydrofuran, gave the U(iii) complexes [UI{κ3-H,S,S'-H(R)B(timMe)2}2(thf)2] (R = H (1), Ph (2)) in good yields. Crystals of [UI{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(thf)2] (2) were obtained by recrystallization from a tetrahydrofuran/acetonitrile solution, and the ion-separated uranium complex [U{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(CH3CN)3][I] (3-I) was obtained by dissolution of 2 in acetonitrile followed by recrystallization. One-electron oxidation of 2 with AgBPh4 or I2 resulted in the formation of the cationic U(iv) complexes [U{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}3][X] (X = BPh4 (6-BPh4), I (6-I)), due to a ligand redistribution process. These complexes are the first examples of homoleptic poly(azolyl)borate U(iv) complexes. Treatment of complex 2 with azobenzene led to the isolation of crystals of the U(iv) compound [UI{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(κ2-timMe)] (7). Treatment of 2 with pyridine-N oxide (pyNO) led to the formation of the uranyl complex [UO2{κ2-S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2] (8) and of complex 6-I, while from the reaction of [U{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(thf)3][BPh4] (5) with pyNO, the oxo-bridged U(iv) complex [{U{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(pyNO)}2(μ-O)][BPh4]2 (9) was also obtained. In the U(iii) and U(iv) complexes, the bis(azolyl)borate ligands bind to the uranium center in a κ3-H,S,S' coordination mode, while in the U(vi) complex the ligands bind to the metal in a κ2-S,S' mode. The presence of UH-B interactions in the solid-state, for the nine-coordinate complexes 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and for the eight-coordinate complex 9, was supported by IR spectroscopy and/or X-ray diffraction analysis.

Influence of the 5f Orbitals on the Bonding and Reactivity in Organoactinides: Experimental and Computational Studies on a Uranium Metallacyclopropene

The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of a uranium metallacyclopropene were comprehensively studied. Reduction of (η(5)-C5Me5)2UCl2 (1) with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene (Me3SiC≡CSiMe3) allows the first stable uranium metallacyclopropene (η(5)-C5Me5)2U[η(2)-C2(SiMe3)2] (2) to be isolated. Magnetic susceptibility data confirm that 2 is a U(IV) complex, and density functional theory (DFT) studies indicate substantial 5f orbital contributions to the bonding of the metallacyclopropene U-(η(2)-C═C) moiety, leading to more covalent bonds between the (η(5)-C5Me5)2U(2+) and [η(2)-C2(SiMe3)2](2-) fragments than those in the related Th(IV) compound. Consequently, very different reactivity patterns emerge, e.g., 2 can act as a source for the (η(5)-C5Me5)2U(II) fragment when reacted with alkynes and a variety of heterounsaturated molecules such as imines, bipy, carbodiimide, organic azides, hydrazine, and azo derivatives.

Dithio- and Diselenophosphinate Thorium(IV) and Uranium(IV) Complexes: Molecular and Electronic Structures, Spectroscopy, and Transmetalation Reactivity

We report a comparison of the molecular and electronic structures of dithio- and diselenophosphinate, (E2PR2)(1-) (E = S, Se; R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu), with thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) complexes. For the thorium dithiophosphinate complexes, reaction of ThCl4(DME)2 with 4 equiv of KS2PR2 (R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu) produced the homoleptic complexes, Th(S2P(i)Pr2)4 (1S-Th-(i)Pr) and Th(S2P(t)Bu2)4 (2S-Th-(t)Bu). The diselenophosphinate complexes were synthesized in a similar manner using KSe2PR2 to produce Th(Se2P(i)Pr2)4 (1Se-Th-(i)Pr) and Th(Se2P(t)Bu2)4 (2Se-Th-(t)Bu). U(S2P(i)Pr2)4, 1S-U-(i)Pr, could be made directly from UCl4 and 4 equiv of KS2P(i)Pr2. With (Se2P(i)Pr2)(1-), using UCl4 and 3 or 4 equiv of KSe2P(i)Pr2 yielded the monochloride product U(Se2P(i)Pr2)3Cl (3Se-U(iPr)-Cl), but using UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 produced the homoleptic U(Se2P(i)Pr2)4 (1Se-U-(i)Pr). Similarly, the reaction of UCl4 with 4 equiv of KS2P(t)Bu2 yielded U(S2P(t)Bu2)4 (2S-U-(t)Bu), whereas the reaction with KSe2P(t)Bu2 resulted in the formation of U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3Cl (4Se-U(tBu)-Cl). Using UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 and 4 equiv of KSe2P(t)Bu2 with UCl4 in acetonitrile yielded U(Se2P(t)Bu2)4 (2Se-U-(t)Bu). Transmetalation reactions were investigated with complex 2Se-U-(t)Bu and various CuX (X = Br, I) salts to yield U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3X (6Se-U(tBu)-Br and 7Se-U(tBu)-I) and 0.25 equiv of [Cu(Se2P(t)Bu2)]4 (8Se-Cu-(t)Bu). Additionally, 2Se-U-(t)Bu underwent transmetalation reactions with Hg2F2 and ZnCl2 to yield U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3F (6) and U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3Cl (4Se-U(tBu)-Cl), respectively. The molecular structures were analyzed using (1)H, (13)C, (31)P, and (77)Se NMR and IR spectroscopy and structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. Using the QTAIM approach, the electronic structure of all homoleptic complexes was probed, showing slightly more covalent bonding character in actinide-selenium bonds over actinide-sulfur bonds.

Uranium(III) redox chemistry assisted by a hemilabile bis(phenolate) cyclam ligand: uranium-nitrogen multiple bond formation comprising a trans-{RN═U(VI)═NR}(2+) complex

A new monoiodide U(III) complex anchored on a hexadentate dianionic 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-based bis(phenolate) ligand, [U(κ(6)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})I] (1), was synthesized from the reaction of [UI3(THF)4] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) and the respective potassium salt K2((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam and structurally characterized. Reactivity of 1 toward one-, two-, and four-electron oxidants was studied to explore the reductive chemistry of this new U(III) complex. Complex 1 reacts with one-electron oxidizers, such as iodine and TlBPh4, to form the seven-coordinate cationic uranium(IV) complexes [U(κ(6)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})I][X] (X = I (2-I), BPh4 (2-BPh4)). The new uranium(III) complex reacts with inorganic azides to yield the pseudohalide uranium(IV) complex [U(κ(6)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})(N3)2] (4) and the nitride-bridged diuranium(IV/IV) complex [(κ(4)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})(N3)U(μ-N)U(κ(5)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})] (5). Two equivalents of [U(κ(6)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})I] (1) effect the four-electron reduction of 1 equiv of PhN═NPh to form the bis(imido) complex [U(κ(4)-{((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam})(NPh)2] (6) and the U(IV) species 2-I. Moreover, the hemilability of the hexadentate ancillary ligand ((tBu2)ArO)2Me2-cyclam(2-) allows to perform the reductive cleavage of azobenzene with an unprecedented formation of a trans-bis(imido) complex. The complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and all the new uranium complexes were structurally authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Spectroscopic and Structural Elucidation of Uranium Dioxophenoxazine Complexes

Uranium derivatives of a redox-active, dioxophenoxazine ligand, (DOPO(q))2UO2, (DOPO(sq))UI2(THF)2, (DOPO(cat))UI(THF)2, and Cp*U(DOPO(cat))(THF)2 (DOPO = 2,4,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-1-oxo-1H-phenoxazin-9-olate), have been synthesized from U(VI) and U(III) starting materials. Full characterization of these species show uranium complexes bearing ligands in three different oxidation states. The electronic structures of these complexes have been explored using (1)H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, and where possible, X-ray crystallography and SQUID magnetometry.

Switchable π-coordination and C–H metallation in small-cavity macrocyclic uranium and thorium complexes

Actinide complexes of a small-cavity, dipyrrolide macrocycle exhibit unusual bent metallocene-type binding, or bis(arene)-type binding, or both at once in a di-uranium adduct.

Comparison of the reactivity of 2-Li-C6H4CH2NMe2 with MCl4 (M=Th, U): isolation of a thorium aryl complex or a uranium benzyne complex

Why do U react like that? Reaction of 2-Li-C6H4CH2NMe2 with [MCl4(DME)n] (M=Th, n=2; M=U, n=0) results in the formation of a thorium aryl complex, [Th(2-C6H4CH2NMe2)4] or a uranium benzyne complex, [Li][U(2,3-C6H3CH2NMe2)(2-C6H4CH2NMe2)3]. A DFT analysis suggests that the formation of a benzyne complex with U but not with Th is a kinetic and not thermodynamic effect.

Isolation of a 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran complex from copper-promoted hydroxylation of THF

A complex of a binucleating macrocyclic ligand comprising a [Cu(II)(μ-OH)Na](2+) core reacts with CuI in THF/CH3CN to yield a novel species with a deprotonated 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran (THF-2-ol) bridging between Cu(II) and Na(I) ions. The complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. (18)O-labeling studies support incorporation of the O atom from μ-OH into the coordinated THF-2-ol ligand.

Iodide, azide, and cyanide complexes of (N,C), (N,N), and (N,O) metallacycles of tetra- and pentavalent uranium

In contrast to the neutral macrocycle [UN*(2)(N,C)] (1) [N* = N(SiMe(3))(3); N,C = CH(2)SiMe(2)N(SiMe(3))] which was quite inert toward I(2), the anionic bismetallacycle [NaUN*(N,C)(2)] (2) was readily transformed into the enlarged monometallacycle [UN*(N,N)I] (4) [N,N = (Me(3)Si)NSiMe(2)CH(2)CH(2)SiMe(2)N(SiMe(3))] resulting from C-C coupling of the two CH(2) groups, and [NaUN*(N,O)(2)] (3) [N,O = OC(═CH(2))SiMe(2)N(SiMe(3))], which is devoid of any U-C bond, was oxidized into the U(V) bismetallacycle [Na{UN*(N,O)(2)}(2)(μ-I)] (5). Sodium amalgam reduction of 4 gave the U(III) compound [UN*(N,N)] (6). Addition of MN(3) or MCN to the (N,C), (N,N), and (N,O) metallacycles 1, 4, and 5 led to the formation of the anionic azide or cyanide derivatives M[UN*(2)(N,C)(N(3))] [M = Na, 7a or Na(15-crown-5), 7b], M[UN*(2)(N,C)(CN)] [M = NEt(4), 8a or Na(15-crown-5), 8b or K(18-crown-6), 8c], M[UN*(N,N)(N(3))(2)] [M = Na, 9a or Na(THF)(4), 9b], [NEt(4)][UN*(N,N)(CN)(2)] (10), M[UN*(N,O)(2)(N(3))] [M = Na, 11a or Na(15-crown-5), 11b], M[UN*(N,O)(2)(CN)] [M = NEt(4), 12a or Na(15-crown-5), 12b]. In the presence of excess iodine in THF, the cyanide 12a was converted back into the iodide 5, while the azide 11a was transformed into the neutral U(V) complex [U(N{SiMe(3)}SiMe(2)C{CHI}O)(2)I(THF)] (13). The X-ray crystal structures of 4, 7b, 8a-c, 9b, 10, 12b, and 13 were determined.

Linear uranium metallocenes with polydentate aromatic nitrogen ligands

Treatment of [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(5)]X(2) [Cp* = C(5)Me(5), X = BPh(4) (1) or I (1')] or Cp*(2)UI(2) in acetonitrile with the polydentate aromatic nitrogen bases phen, terpy and R(4)btbp led to the formation of the linear uranium metallocenes [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(3)(phen)]X(2) [X = BPh(4) (2), I (2')], [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(2)(terpy)][BPh(4)](2) (4), [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(Me(4)btbp)][BPh(4)](2) (5) and [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(CyMe(4)btbp)][X](2), [X = BPh(4) (6), I (6')], [phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, terpy = 2,2':6,2''-terpyridine, Me(4)btbp = 6,6'-bis-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine, CyMe(4)btbp = 6,6'-bis-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-cyclohexane-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine]. The bent metallocene [Cp*(2)U(phen)(2)][BPh(4)](2) (3) was isolated from the reaction of 1 and two molar equivalents of phen in THF. The X-ray crystal structures of 2.2MeCN, 3.2THF, and 6'.2MeCN were determined.

Oxidative addition to U(V)-U(V) dimers: facile routes to uranium(VI) bis(imido) complexes

The ability of dimeric bis(imido) uranium(V) complexes with the general formula [U(N(t)Bu)(2)(Y)((t)Bu(2)bpy)](2) (Y = I (1), SPh (2); (t)Bu(2)bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridyl) to behave as two-electron reducing agents was examined with I(2), AgX (X = Cl, Br), PhEEPh (E = S, Se, Te), and chalcogen (O, S, Se) atom transfer reagents. The addition of I(2) and AgX to 1 leads to the formation of uranium(VI) dihalide complexes with the general formula U(N(t)Bu)(2)(I)(X)((t)Bu(2)bpy) (X = I (3), Cl (4), Br (5)). Complexes 1 and 2 can also reduce PhEEPh to generate uranium(VI) complexes with the general formula U(N(t)Bu)(2)(X)(EPh)((t)Bu(2)bpy) (X = I, E = S (6), Se (8), Te (10); X = SPh, E = S (7), Se (12)). These unsymmetrical complexes appear to be in equilibrium with the uranium(VI) complexes U(N(t)Bu)(2)(X)(2)((t)Bu(2)bpy) and U(N(t)Bu)(2)(EPh)(2)((t)Bu(2)bpy) (E = Se (9), Te (11)) and suggest that both U-I and U-E bonds possess a labile nature in bis(imido) uranium(VI) complexes. Complex 1 also reacts as a two-electron reductant toward chalcogen atom transfer reagents such as 4-methylmorpholine N-oxide, S(8), and Se to produce dimeric bis(imido) uranium(VI) complexes with the general formula [U(N(t)Bu)(2)(I)((t)Bu(2)bpy)](2)(mu-E) (E = O (13), S (14), Se (15)) and [U(N(t)Bu)(2)(I)((t)Bu(2)bpy)](2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-E(4)) (E = S (16), Se (17)). Density functional theory studies performed on a model complex of 13 indicate the presence of multiple bonding in the bridging U-O bond.

A comparison of 4f vs 5f metal-metal bonds in (CpSiMe3)3M-ECp* (M = Nd, U; E = Al, Ga; Cp* = C5Me5): synthesis, thermodynamics, magnetism, and electronic structure

Reaction of (CpSiMe(3))(3)U or (CpSiMe(3))(3)Nd with (Cp*Al)(4) or Cp*Ga (Cp* = C(5)Me(5)) afforded the isostructural complexes (CpSiMe(3))(3)M-ECp* (M = U, E = Al (1); M = U, E = Ga (2); M = Nd, E = Al (3); M = Nd, E = Ga (4)). In the case of 1 and 2 the complexes were isolated in 39 and 90% yields, respectively, as crystalline solids and were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility, and UV-visible-NIR spectroscopy. In the case of 3 and 4, the complexes were observed by variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy but were not isolated as pure materials. Comparison of the equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters DeltaH and DeltaS obtained by (1)H NMR titration methods revealed a much stronger U-Ga interaction in 2 than the Nd-Ga interaction in 4. Competition reactions between (CpSiMe(3))(3)U and (CpSiMe(3))(3)Nd indicate that Cp*Ga selectively binds U over Nd in a 93:7 ratio at 19 degrees C and 96:4 at -33 degrees C. For 1 and 3, comparison of (1)H NMR peak intensities suggests that Cp*Al also achieves excellent U(III)/Nd(III) selectivity at 21 degrees C. The solution electronic spectra and solid-state temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities of 1 and 2, in addition to X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements from scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) of 1, are consistent with those observed for other U(III) coordination complexes. DFT calculations using five different functionals were performed on the model complexes Cp(3)M-ECp (M = Nd, U; E = Al, Ga), and empirical fitting of the values for Cp(3)M-ECp allowed the prediction of binding energy estimates for Cp*Al compounds 1 and 3. NBO/NLMO bonding analyses on Cp(3)U-ECp indicate that the bonding consists predominantly of a E-->U sigma-interaction arising from favorable overlap between the diffuse ligand lone pair and the primarily 7s/6d acceptor orbitals on U(III), with negligible U-->E pi-donation. The overall experimental and computational bonding analysis suggests that Cp*Al and Cp*Ga behave as good sigma-donors in these systems.

Metal-ligand multiple bonding in uranium: structure and reactivity

There is a growing interest in uranium coordination chemistry, particularly as it relates to metal-ligand multiple bonding, and in the last decade significant progress has been made in synthesizing oxo, imido, mu-nitrido, and carbene-containing complexes of uranium. This review summarizes the synthesis, structure and reactivity of these complexes, starting from the inception of the field in 1981. Particular attention is focused on the recent developments in this area, such as the synthesis of the bis(imido) analogues of the uranyl ion, and the isolation of the first mu-nitrido complexes of this element.
