Gilman-Type versus Lipshutz-Type Reagents: Competition in Lithiocuprate Chemistry

The new hydrazine 5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepin-5-amine (2) reacts with P- and Si-electrophiles via deprotonation to afford P(III)-, P(V)-, and TMS-hydrazides 3-8 and with carbonyl electrophiles via acid-free condensation to the N-substituted hydrazones 9-12 that are potential N-alkene ligands. While β-ketohydrazone 9 and α-dihydrazone 10 react with [Mes(Cu)]4, [Cu(NCCCH3)4]2PF6, and FeCl2(THF)1.5 to afford complexes devoid of alkene interaction, [Cu(OTf)]2·C6H6 reacts with the α-keto hydrazone 11 or with N,N dimethyl-hydrazone 12 to form the neutral dimeric Cu(I) complex 18 with bridging Cu(I)-alkene interactions or the tetrahedral cationic complex 19 in which 12 binds as a bidentate hydrazone-alkene ligand, respectively. The surprising stability of the alkene coordination in complexes 18 and 19 prevents substitutions with, e.g., PPh3.

A new route for the efficient metalation of unfunctionalized aromatics

The synthesis and isolation of a novel bimetallic species formed by reacting two equivalents of TMPLi with CuCl in the presence of Et₂O are reported. X-ray crystallography reveals the Et₂O-free tetranuclear aggregate (TMPCu)₂(TMPLi)₂ 1, which formally results from the catenation of dimers of TMPLi and TMPCu. NMR spectroscopy confirms that, upon dissolution in hydrocarbon media, the crystals fail to form a conventional Gilman cuprate dimer. Instead they exhibit a spectrum which is consistent with that recently proposed for an isomer of dimeric Gilman cuprate. Moreover, while pre-isolated Gilman cuprate is inert to benzene solvent, this new isomer smoothly affects aromatic deprotonation to give mainly Ph(TMP)₃Cu₂Li₂ 3, which is formally a heterodimer of Gilman cuprate TMPCu(μ-TMP)Li 2 and PhCu(μ-TMP)Li 4. Attempts to synthesise 3 through explicit combination of pre-isolated 2 and 4 were successful; additionally, this permitted the preparation of Ph(TMP)₃Cu₃Li 5 and Ph(TMP)₃CuLi₃ 7 when 4 was combined in 1 : 2 ratios with TMPCu or TMPLi, respectively. 5 was characterised as metallacyclic in the solid-state, its structural features resembling those in 3 but with reduced Li-π interactions. It also proved possible to perform Cu/Li exchange on 5 (using ^t BuOCu) to give a novel mixed organo(amido)copper species Ph(TMP)₃Cu₄ 6. Remarkably, the unprecedented reactivity of 1 towards benzene is reproduced by heating a 1 : 1 mixture of TMPLi and TMPCu in the same solvent; this gives predominantly 3. On the other hand, mixtures which are rich in either Cu or Li can lead to the selective in situ formation of 5 or 7. Though crystallographic data on 7 could not be obtained, DFT calculations accurately corroborated the observed structures of 3 and 5 and could be used to support 7 having the same structure type, albeit with enhanced Li-π interactions. This was consistent with NMR spectroscopic data. However, in contrast to 3 and 5, for which 2D NMR spectroscopy indicated only conformational changes, 7 was additionally found to exhibit fluxionality in a manner consistent with a dissociative process.

Metal exchange in lithiocuprates: implications for our understanding of structure and reactivity

New reagents have been sought for directed ortho cupration in which the use of cyanide reagents is eliminated. CuOCN reacts with excess TMPLi (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) in the presence of limited donor solvent to give crystals that are best represented as (TMP)2Cu0.1Li0.9(OCN)Li2(THF) 8, whereby both Lipshutz-type lithiocuprate (TMP)2Cu(OCN)Li2(THF) 8a and trinuclear (TMP)2(OCN)Li3(THF) 8b are expressed. Treatment of a hydrocarbon solution of TMP2CuLi 9a with LiOCN and THF gives pure 8a. Meanwhile, formation of 8b is systematized by reacting (TMPH2)OCN 10 with TMPH and nBuLi to give (TMP)2(OCN)Li3(THF)211. Important to the attribution of lower/higher order bonding in lithiocuprate chemistry is the observation that in crystalline 8, amide-bridging Cu and Li demonstrate clear preferences for di- and tricoordination, respectively. A large excess of Lewis base gives an 8-membered metallacycle that retains metal disorder and analyses as (TMP)2Cu1.35Li0.659 in the solid state. NMR spectroscopy identifies 9 as a mixture of (TMP)2CuLi 9a and other copper-rich species. Crystals from which the structure of 8 was obtained dissolve to yield evidence for 8b coexisting in solution with in situ-generated 9a, 11 and a kinetic variant on 9a ( i-9a), that is best viewed as an agglomerate of TMPLi and TMPCu. Moving to the use of DALi (DA = diisopropylamide), (DA)2Cu0.09Li0.91(Br)Li2(TMEDA)212 (TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetremethylethylenediamine) is isolated, wherein (DA)2Cu(Br)Li2(TMEDA)212a exhibits lower-order Cu coordination. The preparation of (DA)2Li(Br)Li2(TMEDA)212b was systematized using (DAH2)Br, DAH and nBuLi. Lastly, metal disorder is avoided in the 2 : 1 lithium amide : Lipshutz-type monomer adduct (DA)4Cu(OCN)Li4(TMEDA)213.

[(NHC)Cu(I)-ER3] Complexes (ER3 = SiMe2Ph, SiPh3, SnMe3): From Linear, Mononuclear Complexes to Polynuclear Complexes with Ultrashort Cu(I)···Cu(I) Distances

A series of complexes of the type [(NHC)Cu-ER3] (NHC = IDipp, IMes, ItBu, Me2IMe, and ER3 = SiMe2Ph, SiPh3, SnMe3) and [(NHC)Cu-R'] (NHC = IDipp, Me2IMe and R' = Ph, C≡CPh) was synthesized in good yields by the reaction of the corresponding [(NHC)Cu-OtBu] complex with the respective silylborane pinB-ER3 (pin = OCMe2CMe2O; ER3 = SiMe2Ph, SiPh3), the stannylborane ((C2H4)(iPrN)2)B-SnMe3, or a boronic acid ester pinB-R' (R' = Ph, C≡CPh). Solid structures of all complexes were systematically studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. The solid state structures of the complexes [(NHC)Cu-ER3] show a dependence of the structural motif from the steric properties of the NHC ligand. The sterically demanding NHC ligands (IDipp, IMes, ItBu) lead to monomeric, linear complexes [(NHC)Cu-ER3], while with the less demanding Me2IMe ligand, polynuclear, μ-ER3-bridged complexes with ultrashort Cu···Cu distances are observed. For the related complexes [(NHC)Cu-R'] no analogous complexes with bridging anionic ligands are realized. Instead, irrespective of the NHC ligand, linear coordinated copper complexes of different types are formed. (29)Si heteronuclear solution NMR spectroscopic data on [(NHC)Cu(I)-SiR3] exhibit distinctly different chemical shifts for the (in the solid state) monomeric and dimeric complexes suggesting different structure types also in solution. This agrees well with the observation of a trinuclear complex [(Me2IMe)Cu-SnMe3]3 both in the solid state and in solution. Initial catalytic studies suggest that [(NHC)Cu-OtBu] complexes (NHC = ItBu, Me2IMe) are, in addition to the established [(IDipp)Cu-OtBu] complex, efficient precatalysts for the silylation of aldehydes and α,β-unsaturated ketones with pinB-SiMe2Ph.

Extending motifs in lithiocuprate chemistry: unexpected structural diversity in thiocyanate complexes

Lithio(thiocyanato)cuprates have been developed. These reveal planar, boat-shaped and chair-shaped Lipshutz-type dimers in the solid state, while Lipshutz-type and Gilman structures are seen in solution.

Structural effects in lithiocuprate chemistry: the elucidation of reactive pentametallic complexes

TMPLi (TMP=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) reacts with Cu(I) salts in the presence of Et2O to give the dimers [{(TMP)2Cu(X)Li2 (OEt2)}2] (X=CN, halide). In contrast, the use of DMPLi (DMP=cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidide) gives an unprecedented structural motif; [{(DMP)2CuLi(OEt2)}2LiX] (X=halide). This formulation suggests a hitherto unexplored route to the in situ formation of Gilman-type bases that are of proven reactivity in directed ortho cupration.

The structural isomers of a number of lithium heteroamidocuprates LiCuR(NR′2) have been studied in the solid state and in solution, with the steric and electronic properties of the amido group (NR′2) shown to significantly influence the solid-state structures and the position of the solution equilibrium.

Main group multiple C-H/N-H bond activation of a diamine and isolation of a molecular dilithium zincate hydride: experimental and DFT evidence for alkali metal-zinc synergistic effects

The surprising transformation of the saturated diamine (iPr)NHCH(2)CH(2)NH(iPr) to the unsaturated diazaethene [(iPr)NCH═CHN(iPr)](2-) via the synergic mixture nBuM, (tBu)(2)Zn and TMEDA (where M = Li, Na; TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) has been investigated by multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations. Several pertinent intermediary and related compounds (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)NH(iPr)]Zn(tBu)(2) (3), (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu) (5), {(THF)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu)}(2) (6), and {(TMEDA)Na[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu)}(2) (11), characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, are discussed in relation to their role in the formation of (TMEDA)M[(iPr)NCH═CHN(iPr)]Zn(tBu) (M = Li, 1; Na, 10). In addition, the dilithio zincate molecular hydride [(TMEDA)Li](2)[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu)H 7 has been synthesized from the reaction of (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)NH(iPr)]Zn(tBu)(2)3 with nBuLi(TMEDA) and also characterized by both X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic studies. The retention of the Li-H bond of 7 in solution was confirmed by (7)Li-(1)H HSQC experiments. Also, the (7)Li NMR spectrum of 7 in C(6)D(6) solution allowed for the rare observation of a scalar (1)J(Li-H) coupling constant of 13.3 Hz. Possible mechanisms for the transformation from diamine to diazaethene, a process involving the formal breakage of four bonds, have been determined computationally using density functional theory. The dominant mechanism, starting from (TMEDA)Li[(iPr)NCH(2)CH(2)N(iPr)]Zn(tBu) (4), involves the formation of a hydride intermediate and leads directly to the observed diazaethene product. In addition the existence of 7 in equilibrium with 4 through the dynamic association and dissociation of a (TMEDA)LiH ligand, also provides a secondary mechanism for the formation of the diazaethene. The two reaction pathways (i.e., starting from 4 or 7) are quite distinct and provide excellent examples in which the two distinct metals in the system are able to interact synergically to catalyze this otherwise challenging transformation.
