Abstract
A diverse family of heterobimetallic bridging hydride adducts of the type [LAu(μ-H)2MCp2][X] (L = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazole-2-ylidene, IPr; 1,3-bis(1-adamantyl)imidazole-2-ylidene, IAd; 1,3-bis(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-4,6-diketopyrimidinyl-2-ylidene, DippDAC; triphenylphosphine, PPh3; 2-di-tert-butylphosphino-2',4',6'-triisopropylbiphenyl, tBuXPhos; X = SbF6-, BF4- or TfO-) was synthesized by reacting group VI metallocene dihydrides Cp2MH2 (Cp = cyclopentadienyl anion; M = Mo, W) with cationic gold(I) complexes [LAu(NCMe)][X]. Trimetallic [L'Au2(μ-H)2WCp2][X]2 and tetrametallic [L'Au2{(μ-H)2WCp2}2] [X]2 complexes (L' = rac-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthalene or bis(diphenylphosphinomethane)) were obtained by reacting digold [L'{Au(NCMe)}2][X]2 with Cp2WH2 in a 1:1 and a 1:2 stoichiometry. Accessing such a broad structural diversity allowed us to pinpoint roles played by the ancillary ligands and group VI metals on the bonding properties of this family of bridging hydrides. In particular, a clear effect of the ligand on the interaction energy and electronic structure was observed, with important implications on photolytic reactivity. UV or visible light irradiation, indeed, leads to the selective cleavage of the heterobimetallic Au(μ-H)2M arrangement and formation of molecular gold hydrides. The photolysis was found to be chromoselective (wavelength-dependent), which can be ascribed to different charge redistributions upon excitation to the first (Kasha's reactivity) and higher (anti-Kasha's reactivity) excited states.

Abstract
The role of hydrogen atoms as surface ligands on metal nanoclusters is of profound importance but remains difficult to directly study. While hydrogen atoms often appear to be incorporated formally as hydrides, evidence suggests that they donate electrons to the cluster's delocalized superatomic orbitals and may consequently behave as acidic protons that play key roles in synthetic or catalytic mechanisms. Here we directly test this assertion for the prototypical Au9 (PPh3 )8 H2+ nanocluster, formed by addition of a hydride to the well-characterized Au9 (PPh3 )8 3+ . Using gas-phase infrared spectroscopy, we were able to unambiguously isolate Au9 (PPh3 )8 H2+ and Au9 (PPh3 )8 D2+ , revealing an Au-H stretching mode at 1528 cm-1 that shifts to 1038 cm-1 upon deuteration. This shift is greater than the maximum expected for a typical harmonic potential, suggesting a potential governing cluster-H bonding that has some square-well character consistent with the hydrogen nucleus behaving as a metal atom in the cluster core. Complexing this cluster with very weak bases reveals a redshift of 37 cm-1 in the Au-H vibration, consistent with those typically seen for moderately acidic groups in gas phase molecules and providing an estimate of the acidity of Au9 (PPh3 )8 H2+ , at least with regard to its surface reactivity.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have drawn considerable interest in the field of nanomaterials chemistry as highly stabilizing ligands enabling the formation of strong and covalent carbon-metal bonds. Applied to gold nanoparticles synthesis, the most common strategy consists of the reduction of a preformed NHC-AuI complex with a large excess of a reducing agent that makes the particle size difficult to control. In this paper, we report the straightforward synthesis of NHC-coated gold nanoparticles (NHC-AuNPs) by treating a commercially available gold(I) precursor with an easy-to-synthesize NHC-BH3 reagent. The latter acts as both the reducing agent and the source of surface ligands operating under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies including NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry demonstrate that the reduction of gold(I) generates NHC-BH2 Cl as a by-product. This strategy gives efficient control over the nucleation and growth of gold particles by varying the NHC-borane/gold(I) ratio, allowing unparalleled particle size variation over the range of 4.9±0.9 to 10.0±2.7 nm. Our strategy also allows an unprecedented precise and controlled seeded growth of gold nanoparticles. In addition, the as-prepared NHC-AuNPs exhibit narrow size distributions without the need for extensive purification or size-selectivity techniques, and are stable over months.

Abstract
A cavity-shaped linear gold(I) hydroxide complex acts as a platform to access unusual gold monomeric species. Notably, this sterically crowded gold fragment enables the trapping of CO2 via insertion into Au-OH and Au-NH bonds to form unprecedented monomeric gold(I) carbonate and carbamate complexes. In addition, we succeeded in the identification of the first gold(I) terminal hydride bearing a phosphine ligand. The basic nature of the Au(I)-hydroxide moiety is also explored through the reactivity toward other molecules containing acidic protons such as trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and terminal alkynes.

Abstract
A mechanochemical method is reported for the synthesis of Au(diphos)X complexes of diphosphine (diphos = XantPhos and N-XantPhos) ligands and halide ions (X = Cl and I). The Au(XantPhos)X (1: X = Cl; 2: X = I) and Au(N-XantPhos)Cl (3) complexes exhibited either yellowish green (1) or bluish green (2) emission, whereas 3 was seemingly non-emissive in the solid state at room temperature. Blue- (2B) and bluish green (2G) luminescent concomitant solvates of 2 were obtained by recrystallization. Luminescent colour changes from blue (2B) or bluish green (2G) to yellow were observed when these forms were subjected to mechanical stimulus, while the original emission colour can be recovered in the presence of solvent vapours. Moreover, the luminescence of 2B can be reversibly altered between blue and yellow by heating/cooling-cycles. These results demonstrate the power of mechanochemistry in the rapid (4 min reaction time), efficient (up to 98% yield) and greener synthesis of luminescent and stimuli-responsive gold(I) complexes.

Abstract
In this work, we show that intramolecular hydrogen bonding can be used to stabilize tri-coordinated phosphane-gold(I) complexes. Two molecular structures of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid (L) coordinated to a gold(I) atom were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The linear L-Au-Br shows a standard linear coordination and dimerizes via hydrogen bonds of the carboxylic acid. Upon addition of two additional phosphane ligands the complex [L3Au]X is formed which is stabilized by three intramolecular -C(O)O-H … X hydrogen bonds as proven by the X-ray structure of the respective chlorido-complex. X-ray powder diffractograms suggest the same structure also for X- = Br- and I-. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s00706-021-02843-2.

Abstract
We report the reactivity of isolable Au(i)-hydride stabilized by an NHC-coordinated diphosphene towards substrates containing C-C and N-N multiple bonds (NHC = N-heterocyclcic carbene). Reactions with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and azobenzene lead to a trans-addition of the Au(i)-H across the C-C triple bond and the N-N double bond, respectively. In contrast, the reaction with ethyl diazoacetate affords a gold(i)-hydrazonide as the 1,1-addition product to the terminal nitrogen atom. With phenyl acetylene, the corresponding Au(i)-alkynyl complex is obtained under the elimination of dihydrogen. Strikingly, diphosphene-containing Au(i)-hydride is more reactive - affording different products in some cases - than a related NHC-stabilized Au(i)-hydride without the mediating diphosphene moiety.

Abstract
A convenient method for the selective synthesis of alkoxyhydrosiloxanes that bear SiH and SiOR2 groups on the same silicon atom, R13Si-O-SiR32-n(OR2)nH (n = 0, 1, or 2), via a simple catalyst- and additive-free dealcoholization reaction between silanols and alkoxyhydrosilanes has been developed. These alkoxyhydrosiloxanes can be easily converted into Si(OR2)3-containing siloxanes by zinc catalyzed alkoxylation and alkoxy-containing silphenylene polymers by platinum catalyzed hydrosilylation.

Abstract
High energy resolution fluorescence detected XANES (HERFD-XANES) and valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC-XES) are introduced as powerful tools to investigate hydride-iron interaction, the possible iron-iron bond, and iron spin state of the dinuclear tetra-hydrido complex [{5CpFe}2(μ-H)4] (1H, 5Cp = η5-C5 iPr5) by thoroughly accessing the geometric and electronic structure of this complex in comparison to the nonhydride reference [5CpCpFe] (1, Cp = C5H5). The so far observed most intense hydride induced signals in the pre-edge feature of the HERFD-XANES and in the VtC-XES spectra at the iron K-edge allow a precise analysis of the LUMO and HOMO states, respectively, by application of time-dependent density function theory (TD-DFT) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results of these calculations are further employed to understand the oxidation state, spin states, and potential Fe-Fe bonds in this complex.

Abstract
The synthesis, reactivity, and potential of well-defined dinuclear gold complexes as precursors for dual-gold catalysis is explored. Using the preorganizing abilities of well-known wide bite angle diphosphine ligands, DBFPhos and DPEPhos, dinuclear Au(I)–Au(I) complexes 1 and 2 are used as precursors to form well-defined monocationic species with either a chlorido- or acetylido-ligand bridging the two gold centers. These compounds are active catalysts for the dual-gold heterocycloaddition of a urea-functionalized alkyne, and the preorganization of both Au-centers affords efficient σ,π-activation of the substrate, even at high dilution, significantly outperforming benchmark mononuclear catalysts.

Abstract
Quasi-homogeneous ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with atomic precision and well-defined structure offer great opportunity for exploring the catalytic nature of nanogold catalysts at a molecular level. Herein, using real-time electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), we have successfully identified the desorption and re-adsorption of p-mercaptobenzoic acid (p-MBA) ligands from Au25(p-MBA)18 NC catalysts during the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol in solution. This ligand dynamic (desorption and re-adsorption) would initiate structural transformation of Au25(p-MBA)18 NC catalysts during the reaction, forming a mixture of smaller Au NCs (Au23(p-MBA)16 as the major species) at the beginning of catalytic reaction, which could further be transformed into larger Au NCs (Au26(p-MBA)19 as the major species). The adsorption of hydrides (from NaBH4) is identified as the determining factor that could induce the ligand dynamic and structural transformation of NC catalysts. This study provides fundamental insights into the catalytic nature of Au NCs, including catalytic mechanism, active species and stability of Au NC catalysts during a catalytic reaction.

Abstract
A gold-catalyzed oxidative coupling of alkynes was developed as an efficient approach for the synthesis of challenging cyclic conjugated diynes (CCD). Compared to the classical copper-promoted oxidative coupling reaction of alkynes, this gold-catalyzed process exhibits a faster reaction rate due to the rapid reductive elimination from the Au(III) intermediate. This unique reactivity thus allowed a challenging diyne macrocyclization to take place in high efficiency. Condition screening revealed a [(n-Bu)4N]+[Cl-Au-Cl]- salt as the optimal pre-catalyst. Macrocycles with ring size between 13 to 28 atoms were prepared in moderate to good yields, which highlighted the broad substrate scope of this new strategy. Furthermore, the synthetic utilities of the cyclic conjugated diynes for copper-free click chemistry have been demonstrated, which showcased the potential application of this strategy in biological systems.

Abstract
We report compelling evidences that dihydrosilanes are activated in a homolytic fashion on the surface of nanoporous gold (NPG), which produces hydrogen radical and silicon moieties covalently linked to the surface of the NPG. This new reactivity has led to the development of novel silylation reactions on gold.
Si–H bond activation is an important process implicated in many useful synthetic applications including silylation and transfer hydrogenation reactions. Herein we discovered homolytic activation of Si–H bonds on the surface of nanoporous gold (NPG), forming hydrogen radicals and [Au]–[Si] intermediates. By virtue of this new reactivity, we achieved highly selective mono and sequential alcoholysis of dihydrosilane. In addition, the amphiphilic nature of the [Au]–[Si] intermediate allows for a new bis-silylation reaction of cyclic ethers. The present work showcased that the surface reactivity of nanocatalysts may provide exciting opportunity for new reaction discovery.

Abstract
Two hydride catalysts [Fe(CO)(dppp)H(NO)] (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) and [Fe(CO)H(NO)(PPh3)2] in comparison with nonhydride analogues [Fe(dppe)(NO)2] (dppe = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) and [Fe(NO)2(PPh3)2] are investigated with a combination of valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC-XES) and high-energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES). To fully understand the experiments and to obtain precise information about molecular levels being involved in the spectral signals, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and ground state density functional theory (DFT) calculations are necessary. An excellent agreement between experiment and theory allows the identification of particular spectral signals of the Fe-H group. Antibonding Fe-H interactions clearly contribute to pre-edge signals in HERFD-XANES spectra, while bonding Fe-H interactions cause characteristic signatures in the VtC-XES spectra. The sensitivity of both methods with respect to the Fe-H distance is demonstrated by a scanning simulation approach. The results open the way to study metal hydride complexes in situ, their formation, and their fate during catalytic reactions, using high-resolution XANES and valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy.

Abstract
Surprisingly general effects of trans ligands L on the ligand NMR shifts in third-row transition-metal complexes have been found by quasi-relativistic computations, encompassing 5d10 , 5d8 , and to some extent even 5d6 situations. Closer analysis, with emphasis on 1 H shieldings in a series of linear HAuI Lq complexes, reveals a dominance of spin-orbit (SO) effects, which can change sign from appreciably shielding for weak trans ligands to appreciably deshielding for ligands with strong trans influence. This may be traced back to increasing destabilization of a σ-type MO at scalar relativistic level, which translates into very different σ-/π-mixing if SO coupling is included. For the strongest trans ligands, the σ-MO may move above the highest occupied π-type MOs, thereby dramatically reducing strongly shielding contributions from predominantly π-type spinors. The effects of SO-mixing are in turn related to angular momentum admixture from atomic spinors at the metal center. These SO-induced trends hold for other nuclei and may also be used to qualitatively predict shifts in unknown complexes.

Abstract
O2 insertion into a Au(i)-H bond occurs through an oxidative addition/recombination mechanism, showing peculiar differences with respect to Pd(ii)-H, for which O2 insertion takes place through a hydrogen abstraction mechanism in the triplet potential energy surface with a pure spin transition state. We demonstrate that the spin-forbidden Au(i)-hydride O2 insertion reaction can only be described accurately by inclusion of spin orbit coupling (SOC) effects. We further find that a new mechanism involving two O2 molecules is also feasible, and this result, together with the unexpectedly high experimental entropic activation parameter, suggests the possibility that a third species could be involved in the rate determining step of the reaction. Finally, we show that the O2 oxidative addition into a Au(i)-alkyl (CH3) bond also occurs but the following recombination process using O2 is unfeasible and the metastable intermediate Au(iii) species will revert to reactants, thus accounting for the experimental inertness of Au-alkyl complexes toward oxygen, as frequently observed in catalytic applications. We believe that this study can pave the way for further theoretical and experimental investigations in the field of Au(i)/Au(iii) oxidation reactions, including ligand, additive and solvent effects.

Abstract
Hydride complexes of copper, silver, and gold encompass a broad array of structures, and their distinctive reactivity has enabled dramatic recent advances in synthesis and catalysis. This Review summarizes the synthesis, characterization, and key stoichiometric reactions of isolable or observable coinage metal hydrides. It discusses catalytic processes in which coinage metal hydrides are known or probable intermediates, and presents mechanistic studies of selected catalytic reactions. The purpose of this Review is to convey how developments in coinage metal hydride chemistry have led to new organic transformations, and how developments in catalysis have in turn inspired the synthesis of reactive new complexes.

Abstract
A tricoordinated gold(I) chloride complex, tBuXantphosAuCl, supported by a sterically bulky 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)xanthene ligand (tBuXantphos) was synthesized. This complex features a remarkably longer Au-Cl bond length [2.632(1) Å] than bicoordinated linear gold complexes (2.27-2.30 Å) and tricoordinated XantphosAuCl [2.462(1) Å]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a cocrystal of tBuXantphosAuCl and pentafluoronitrobenzene (PFNB) and UV-vis spectroscopic titration experiments revealed the existence of an anion-π interaction between the Cl anion ligand and PFNB. Stoichiometric reaction between PFNB and tBuXantphosAuOtBu, after replacement of Cl by a more nucleophilic tBuO anion ligand, showed higher reactivity and para selectivity in the transformation of C-F to C-OtBu bond, distinctively different from that when only KOtBu was used (ortho selectivity) under the identical condition. Mechanistic studies including density functional theory calculations suggested a gold-mediated nucleophilic ligand attack of the C-F bond pathway via an SNAr process. On the basis of these results, using trimethylsilyl derivatives TMS-X (X = OMe, SEt, NEt2) as the nucleophilic ligand source and the fluorine acceptor, catalytic transformation of the C-F bond of aromatic substrates to the C-X (X = O, S, N) bond was achieved with tBuXantphosAuCl as the catalyst (up to 20 turnover numbers).

Abstract
Gold, the archetypal "noble metal", used to be considered of little interest in catalysis. It is now clear that this was a misconception, and a multitude of gold-catalysed transformations has been reported. However, one consequence of the long-held view of gold as inert metal is that its organometallic chemistry contains many "unknowns", and catalytic cycles devised to explain gold's reactivity draw largely on analogies with other transition metals. How realistic are such mechanistic assumptions? In the last few years a number of key compound classes have been discovered that can provide some answers. This Perspective attempts to summarise these developments, with particular emphasis on recently discovered gold(iii) complexes with bonds to hydrogen, oxygen, alkenes and CO ligands.

Abstract
An air-stable cationic Au(I) complex featuring a Z-type ligand (boron atom) as a σ-acceptor was developed for elucidating the effect of B on catalytic reactions. An enyne cyclization in the presence of either [Au→B](+) or [Au](+) showed that [Au→B](+) promotes the reactivity, which enabled the effective construction of not only five- and six-membered rings, but also seven-membered rings.

Abstract
Strategies for the synthesis of highly electrophilic Au(I) complexes from either hydride- or chloride-containing precursors have been investigated by employing sterically encumbered Dipp-substituted expanded-ring NHCs (Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ). Thus, complexes of the type (NHC)AuH have been synthesised (for NHC=6-Dipp or 7-Dipp) and shown to feature significantly more electron-rich hydrides than those based on ancillary imidazolylidene donors. This finding is consistent with the stronger σ-donor character of these NHCs, and allows for protonation of the hydride ligand. Such chemistry leads to the loss of dihydrogen and to the trapping of the [(NHC)Au](+) fragment within a dinuclear gold cation containing a bridging hydride. Activation of the hydride ligand in (NHC)AuH by B(C6 F5 )3 , by contrast, generates a species (at low temperatures) featuring a [HB(C6 F5 )3 ](-) fragment with spectroscopic signatures similar to the "free" borate anion. Subsequent rearrangement involves BC bond cleavage and aryl transfer to the carbophilic metal centre. Under halide abstraction conditions utilizing Na[BAr(f) 4 ] (Ar(f) =C6 H3 (CF3 )2 -3,5), systems of the type [(NHC)AuCl] (NHC=6-Dipp or 7-Dipp) generate dinuclear complexes [{(NHC)Au}2 (μ-Cl)](+) that are still electrophilic enough at gold to induce aryl abstraction from the [BAr(f) 4 ](-) counterion.
