Geological Substrate Effects on Teucrium montanum L. (Lamiaceae) Morphological Traits: Geometric Morphometrics Approach

The shape-environment relationship in plants refers to the ways in which the physical characteristics and structures of plants are influenced by their environment. Plants have evolved a remarkable ability to adapt to their specific habitats, and their shape and form play a crucial role in determining their survival and reproductive success. This study aimed to examine differences in size and shape between morphological traits in mountain germander (Teucrium montanum L.) from different geological substrates (calcareous and serpentinite). For this study, 400 individuals of T. montanum from 20 populations (ten populations from the serpentinite and ten from the calcareous substrate) were selected. Using the geometric morphometrics approach, it was shown that the degree of phenotypic variation in the size and shape of the corolla, leaf, and stem of T. montanum depends on the type of substrate. The main differences between the populations are the narrower part of the lower lip of the corolla, the narrower leaf, and the wider central part of the vascular system stem from serpentinite populations. The results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the morphological variability of T. montanum in relation to edaphic conditions. In addition, the results confirm that certain morphological differences play an important role in the adaptive response in relation to substrate composition, especially for substrates with increased metal content, such as serpentinite. The shape-environment relationship in plants could define diversity and complexity in plant life, and underscores the importance of shape as a key factor in their survival and success in different habitats.

О РАСПРОСТРАНЕНИИ ГИНОДИЭЦИИ У ЦВЕТКОВЫХ РАСТЕНИЙ, "БОТАНИЧЕСКИЙ ЖУРНАЛ"

На основании литературных данных и собственных наблюдений составлен новый список гинодиэцичных растений, включающий в себя 1126 видов из 89 семейств покрытосеменных мировой флоры. Анализируются особенности распространения гинодиэции (женской двудомности) среди цветковых растений. В настоящее время у двудольных растений гинодиэция обнаружена у представителей 77 семейств, 278 родов и 1044 видов, а у однодольных — у 12 семейств, 25 родов и 82 видов. Гинодиэция ассоциируется главным образом с многолетними травами, умеренным климатом, энтомофильным опылением.

Costs of reproduction as related to the timing of phenological phases in the dioecious Shrub Pistacia lentiscus L

Females of woody dioecious species usually devote more resources to reproduction than males. This may lead to a decrease in female survival and growth. The costs of reproduction, however, can be lightened through a number of mechanisms, as for example avoiding the temporal coincidence of reproduction and vegetative growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether males and females of P. lentiscus differ in the timing of their vegetative growth, and to assess whether the sequencing of vegetative growth and reproduction reduces reproductive costs. We monitored phenology in males and females. We also compared male and female allocation of nutrients and biomass in the branch, and the developmental stability of the growing shoots. We did this both prior to and at the end of the fruiting period. Males and females showed similar vegetative and flowering phenologies. Males invested more biomass in flowering, but the sexes showed equal vegetative biomass and nutrient content prior to the fruiting period. In female branches, no trade-off was found between fruit load and current-year vegetative growth. In P. lentiscus, avoiding the overlap of flowering, vegetative growth and fruiting probably contributes to reduce the immediate costs of reproductive efforts, both in males and females.

Variation in growth responses to availability of water in Cistus albidus populations from different habitats

Seeds of Cistus albidus L. plants from three populations that are exposed to differing temperature and precipitation in Almería province of south-east Spain, were collected and grown together in a factorial experiment with two irrigation treatments. The aim was to determine whether populations from different habitats differed when exposed to common conditions, or differed in the plasticity of their response to availability of water. Significant differences in growth of branches and in leaf dimensions were found between treatments, indicating phenotypic plasticity. There was also significant variation between populations in growth of branches and leaf dimensions, with a population from a location that is intermediate in terms of precipitation and temperature showing the greatest growth of branches and production of leaves under the well-watered treatment. This population is from a semi-arid climate, where precipitation is unpredictable, and selection may have occurred to favour rapid growth when water is available. This population had the narrowest leaves under both treatments, and the lowest leaf mass in the well-watered treatment. It also maintained the same mass per leaf under the two treatments, whereas the others showed an increased mass of leaves with increased availability of water. Thus, populations differed both in their manner of allocating resources and their response to availability of water.

Herbivore effects on developmental instability and fecundity of holm oaks

Plants are able to compensate for loss of tissue due to herbivores at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, masking detrimental effects of herbivory on plant fitness at these scales. The stressing effect of herbivory could also produce instability in the development of plant modules, and measures of such instability may reflect the fitness consequences of herbivory if instability is related to components of plant fitness. We analyse the relationships between herbivory, developmental instability and production of female flowers and fruits of holm oak Quercus ilex trees by means of herbivore removal experiments. Removal of leaf herbivores reduced herbivory rates at the tree level, but had no effect on mean production of female flowers or mature fruits, whereas herbivory tended to enhance flower production and had no effect on fruit abortion at the shoot level. Differences in herbivory levels between shoots of the same branch did not affect the size and fluctuating asymmetry of intact leaves. These results indicate compensation for herbivory at the tree level and over-compensation at the shoot level in terms of allocation of resources to female flower production. Removal of insect herbivores produced an increase in the mean developmental instability of leaves at the tree level in the year following the insecticide treatment, and there was a direct relationship between herbivory rates in the current year and leaf fluctuating asymmetry the following year irrespective of herbivore removal treatment. Finally, the production of pistillate flowers and fruits by trees was inversely related to the mean fluctuating asymmetry of leaves growing the same year. Leaf fluctuating asymmetry was thus an estimator of the stressing effects of herbivory on adult trees, an effect that was delayed to the following year. As leaf fluctuating asymmetry was also related to tree fecundity, asymmetry levels provided a sensitive measure of plant performance under conditions of compensatory responses to herbivory.

Consequences of inter-population crosses on developmental stability and canalization of floral traits inDalechampia scandens(Euphorbiaceae)

Congruence between changes in phenotypic variance and developmental noise in inter-population hybrids was analysed to test whether environmental canalization and developmental stability were controlled by common genetic mechanisms. Developmental stability assessed by the level of fluctuating asymmetry (FA), and canalization by the within- and among-individual variance, were measured on several floral traits of Dalechampia scandens (Euphorbiaceae). Hybridization affected canalization. Both within- and among-individual phenotypic variance decreased in hybrids from populations of intermediate genetic distance, and strongly increased in hybrids from genetically distant populations. Mean-trait FA differed among cross-types, but hybrids were not consistently more or less asymmetric than parental lines across traits. We found no congruence between changes in FA and changes in phenotypic variance. These results suggest that developmental stability (measured by FA) and canalization are independently controlled. This study also confirms the weak relationship between FA and the breakdown of coadapted gene complexes following inter-population hybridization.

Developmental stability in Brassica cretica: the effect of crossing distance on fluctuating asymmetry in cotyledon morphology

In the present investigation of Brassica cretica, a wild relative of the cultivated cabbage, B. oleracea, we performed an extensive crossing experiment, involving self-pollinations, random outcrosses within populations and hybridizations between populations or species, to evaluate the relationship between crossing distance and developmental stability, estimated as the absolute difference between the right and left lobe of the cotyledons. The frequency distribution of the right-minus-left scores had a narrower peak than expected for normally-distributed data, but there was no directional asymmetry or antisymmetry. Despite evidence for inbreeding depression in seedling biomass and cotyledon size, the type of cross had negligible influence on cotyledon asymmetry. Separate analyses of between-population hybrids revealed differences among progenies from different pairs of populations and a tendency for the F1 hybrid means to decrease with the geographic distance separating the parent populations, but only for the two size variables. Based on these and other observations, we propose that the degree of cotyledon asymmetry is unrelated to genome-wide characteristics, such as the level of heterozygosity and genomic co-adaptation, and that cotyledon asymmetry is unrelated to the level of genetic stress experienced by each individual. Hence, there is no reason to consider measures of asymmetry as more sensitive indicators of genetic health than conventional fitness variables.

Developmental Instability as a Means of Assessing Stress in Plants: A Case Study Using Electromagnetic Fields and Soybeans

Developmental instability is often assessed using deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry. Here, we review the literature describing previous studies, suggest mechanisms that may account for both the generation and disruption of bilateral symmetry, and examine the influence of electromagnetic fields on the asymmetry of soybean leaves. Leaves from plants under high-voltage power lines generating pulsed magnetic fields of <3 to >50 mG were more asymmetrical for two parameters (the terminal leaflet widths and lateral rachilla lengths) than leaves of plants even 50 or 100 m away from power lines. This asymmetry could not be attributed to either size scaling or measurement error.

Characterization of Branch Complexity by Fractal Analyses

The comparison between complexity in the sense of space occupancy (box-counting fractal dimension Dc and information dimension DI) and heterogeneity in the sense of space distribution (average evenness index J&d1; and evenness variation coefficient JCV) were investigated in mathematical fractal objects and natural branch structures. In general, increased fractal dimension was paired with low heterogeneity. Comparisons between branch architecture in Anthyllis cytisoides under different slope exposure and grazing impact revealed that branches were more complex and more homogeneously distributed for plants on northern exposures than southern, while grazing had no impact during a wet year. Developmental instability was also investigated by the statistical noise of the allometric relation between internode length and node order. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that fractal dimension of branch structure can be used to analyze the structural organization of plants, especially if we consider not only fractal dimension but also shoot distribution within the canopy (lacunarity). These indexes together with developmental instability analyses are good indicators of growth responses to the environment.

Morphological Developmental Stability in Plants: Patterns and Causes

Minor bilateral or radial asymmetry of leaves or flowers, the frequency of phenodeviants, intraindividual variation in repeated characters, and fractal dimensions of morphology are considered to represent measures of developmental instability since deviations from regularity of the phenotype constitute a measure of the inability to maintain developmental precision during ontogeny. First, we review patterns of fluctuating asymmetry in plants and show that levels of asymmetry are considerably greater than in animals. While petal asymmetry tends to decrease with petal size within species, leaf asymmetry tends to increase with leaf size. Intraspecific correlations of petal asymmetry and leaf asymmetry are weakly positive. Second, a meta-analysis of the effects of environmental factors hypothesized to increase asymmetry in leaves and flowers, such as radiation, ultraviolet light, excess artificial fertilizer, pollutants, extreme saline conditions, herbivory, and competition, showed intermediate (i.e., explaining 10% of the variance) to large (i.e., explaining 25% of the variance) effects. Third, a meta-analysis of the effects of genetic factors hypothesized to contribute to increased asymmetry in plants, such as homozygosity, hybridization, mutation, and quantitative genetic differences among individuals, showed variable but usually significant effects, although the number of studies generally was small. Controlled experimental studies of environmental and genetic effects on developmental instability of plants may increase our understanding of the mechanisms causing developmental instability.

A meta-analysis of fluctuating asymmetry in relation to heterozygosity

Fluctuating asymmetry, the random departure from perfect bilateral symmetry, is a common measure of developmental instability that has been hypothesized to be inversely correlated with heterozygosity. Although this claim has been widely repeated, several studies have reported no such association. Therefore, we test the generality of this association, using meta-analysis, by converting test statistics for the relationship between heterozygosity (H) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) into a common effect size, the Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient. We have analysed a database containing 41 studies with a total of 118 individual samples. Overall we found an unweighted mean negative effect size; r=-0.09 (i. e. a negative correlation between H and FA). Significant heterogeneity in effect size was mainly caused by a difference between ectothermic and endothermic animals, and to a lesser extent by the use of different study designs (i.e. within-population vs. among-populations). Mean effect size for endothermic animals was positive and significantly different from the mean effect size for ectothermic animals. Only for within-population studies of ectothermic animals did we find a significantly negative effect size (r=-0.23 +/- 0.09). The distribution of effect sizes in relation to sample size provided little evidence for patterns typical of those produced by publication bias. Our analysis suggests, at best, only a weak association between H and FA, and heterozygosity seems to explain only a very small amount of the variation in developmental instability among individuals and populations (r2=0.01 for the total material).
