The Mental Health in Austrian Teenagers (MHAT) Study: design, methodology, description of study population

Profound epidemiological data on the prevalence of mental health disorders and respective risk and protective factors is a prerequisite for adequate prevention, intervention and service planning. Children and adolescents are regarded as high priority groups for prevention in this field because of the high chronicity and individual burden of mental health disorders. The Mental Health in Austrian Teenagers (MHAT)-Study is the first epidemiological study based on a large representative sample of adolescents (N > 3700) in Austria in order to obtain the prevalence of a wide range of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. Adolescents are recruited from multiple settings (schools, course providers for early school leavers and psychiatric clinics) in order to enhance the representativity of the sample. A “gold-standard” two-stage design (screening questionnaire and diagnostic interviews) is used to obtain psychiatric diagnoses that are based on the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders which was published by the American Psychiatric Association in 2013. This paper aims at presenting the study design and methodology of the MHAT study, describing the study population as well as discussing relevant strengths and limitations.

[WISC-IV performances of young male subjects with AD(H)D, the benefits of applying cognitive profile analysis to diagnostics]

Objective

Studies suggest that children and adolescents suffering from AD(H)D show a specific WISC-IV profile in comparison to subjects of the same age group without any mental disorder. The present study compares the cognitive profiles of male subjects with AD(H)D to those of a clinical control group. The benefits of applying an ADHD specific cognitive profile analysis to differential diagnostics are analyzed.

Method

The WISC-IV profiles of 50 male subjects with AD(H)D (8 to 15 years) were compared with the profiles of 54 male children and adolescents(7 to 16 years) with other mental disorders. In addition, subgroup differences within the AD(H)D group were investigated.

Results

Subjects with AD(H)D showed a significant lower processing speed than the control group. Within the AD(H)D group, patients with ADD showed the lowest speed index. There were no group differences in total IQ and other WISC-IV indexes.

Conclusions

A WISC-IV profile analysis is not a suitable instrument to certainly confirm or exclude an AD(H)D diagnosis. Nevertheless, the results of the present study speak for considering the WISC-IV profile in the diagnosis of AD(H)D as it increases the sensitivity of the clinical diagnostic process and provides useful indicators for differential diagnosis.

Schulisches Wohlbefinden von SchülerInnen mit und ohne sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarf

Fragestellung: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht das schulische Wohlbefinden von SchülerInnen mit und ohne sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarf (SPF) in Integrationsklassen im Vergleich zu SchülerInnen aus Regelklassen, in welchen keine Kinder mit SPF unterrichtet werden. Zudem werden Zusammenhänge zwischen dem schulischen Wohlbefinden und emotionalen Problemen, Verhaltensauffälligkeiten, Hyperaktivität, Problemen mit Gleichaltrigen und prosozialem Verhalten analysiert. Methodik: Insgesamt 1.115 SchülerInnen (37 % SchülerInnen der 4. Schulstufe, 63 % SchülerInnen der 7. Schulstufe) nahmen an der Befragung teil, davon hatten 126 SchülerInnen einen SPF. Als Erhebungsinstrumente wurde die Skala «Wohlbefinden in der Schule» aus dem FEESS 3–4 ( Rauer & Schuck, 2004 ) sowie das SDQ ( Goodman, 1997 ) verwendet. Ergebnisse: Die Ergebnisse weisen hohe Reliabilitäten für die Skala «Wohlbefinden in der Schule» bei SchülerInnen mit und ohne SPF in beiden Schulstufen (4. vs. 7. Schulstufe) auf. Darüber hinaus wurde gezeigt, dass die Varianzaufklärung für das schulische Wohlbefinden sowohl Anteile auf der Ebene der individuellen SchülerInnen als auch Anteile auf der klassenspezifischen Ebene aufweist. Signifikante Prädiktoren des schulischen Wohlbefindens waren das Geschlecht, Verhaltensschwächen und -stärken sowie die Schulstufe. Der SPF-Status (kein SPF vs. SPF) sowie das Klassensetting (Regel- vs. Integrationsklasse) beeinflussten das schulische Wohlbefinden jedoch nicht signifikant.
