Zusammenfassung. Theoretischer Hintergrund. Suizid ist weltweit die zweithäufigste Todesursache bei jungen Menschen. Es scheint sinnvoll, speziell auf diese Zielgruppe zugeschnittene Angebote anzubieten. Fragestellung. Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist, den von den Nutzenden wahrgenommenen Beratungserfolg eines Online-Peer-Suizidpräventionsprogramms zu ermitteln und zu prüfen, welche Merkmale mit dem Beratungserfolg zusammenhängen. Methode. Daten eines Online-Fragebogens wurden ausgewertet ( N = 318). Ergebnisse. Bei zwei Drittel der Befragten verminderte sich die Suizidalität. Wichtige Variablen zur Vorhersage der Veränderung der Suizidalität waren der Eindruck der Ratsuchenden, dass die Peers die persönlichen Anliegen verstehen und die Anregung zu einer Verhaltensänderung. Das Peerverhalten trug signifikant zur Vorhersage der subjektiven Nützlichkeit und der allgemeinen Situation bei. Schlussfolgerungen. Die Studie liefert positive Ergebnisse hinsichtlich der Evaluierung der Online-Suizidpräventions-Beratung. Da das Verstanden fühlen und das Peerverhalten im Zusammenhang mit dem Beratungserfolg steht, könnte der Peer-Ansatz und die damit einhergehende positive Beziehungserfahrung wichtig sein.

[Are suicidal young people reached by online-counselling? Evaluation of the target group outreach of [U25] online suicide prevention]

Are suicidal young people reached by online-counselling? Evaluation of the target group outreach of [U25] online suicide prevention Abstract. Objective: "[U25] Germany" is an online-counselling platform designed to help adolescents and young adults suffering from suicidal ideation or emotional crisis. The online approach and anonymous counselling by peers (young voluntary workers) instead of professionals were initiated to lower the threshold for those seeking help. This study examines characteristics of people seeking help from [U25] and estimates the outreach of the program. Method: Data from n = 1062 counselling protocols dating from 2017 were obtained. In addition, we conducted n = 13 problem-focused interviews with peer counsellors. Results: Our data indicate a good target group outreach concerning age, suicidality, and psychological burden of the clients. However, young men seek counselling by [U25] less frequently than young women. Additionally, preliminary data indicate that young people with lower educational background consult [U25] less often. Conclusions: [U25] offers a promising approach to helping young people suffering from suicidal ideation or a personal crisis. New approaches should be developed and evaluated to better reach young men and persons with a lower education background.

Quality of Life in Family Caregivers of Adolescents with Depression in China: A Mixed-Method Study

PURPOSE

In this study, we investigated quantitatively the quality of life (QoL) and its influencing factors among Chinese family caregivers who care for adolescents with depression (AWD) and we explored qualitatively their care-giving experiences.

METHODS

The study was a mixed method with convergent parallel design. The sociodemographic characteristics, QoL, caregivers' burden, family functioning, positive and negative affects were assessed by using questionnaires on 240 family caregivers of AWD in China. Twelve of these family caregivers were interviewed by using a semi-structured guide to explore their care-giving experiences.

RESULTS

The mean score among family caregivers of AWD for physical QoL was 65.18 and 59.42 for mental QoL, which was significantly lower than the Chinese norms for QoL. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that course of disease of AWD, caregivers' educational qualification, family functioning, positive affect and care-giving burden accounted for 57% of the variance in physical QoL. Suicide history of AWD, caregivers' educational qualification, negative affect, positive affect, care-giving burden and family functioning accounted for 54% of the variance in mental QoL. Four major themes of the care-giving experiences emerged: lack of knowledge about depression, being overwhelmed emotionally with psychological burden, the devastating impact of illness on family, and the perceived benefits of care-giving.

CONCLUSION

The QoL among family caregivers of AWD in China was low. It is necessary for health-care professionals to pay more attention to the QoL of family caregivers who care for AWD.

Global Lifetime and 12-Month Prevalence of Suicidal Behavior, Deliberate Self-Harm and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Children and Adolescents between 1989 and 2018: A Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the global lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal behavior, deliberate self-harm and non-suicidal self-injury in children and adolescents.

METHODS

A systematic search for relevant articles published between 1989 to 2018 was performed in multiple electronic databases. The aggregate 12-month and lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior, deliberate self-harm, and non-suicidal self-injury were calculated based on the random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed to compare the prevalence according to school attendance and geographical regions. Results: A total of 686,672 children and adolescents were included. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicide attempts was 6% (95% CI: 4.7-7.7%) and 4.5% (95% CI: 3.4-5.9%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal plan was 9.9% (95% CI: 5.5-17%) and 7.5% (95% CI: 4.5-12.1%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal ideation was 18% (95% CI: 14.2-22.7%) and 14.2% (95% CI: 11.6-17.3%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury was 22.1% (95% CI: 16.9-28.4%) and 19.5% (95% CI: 13.3-27.6%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of deliberate self-harm was 13.7% (95% CI: 11.0-17.0%) and 14.2% (95% CI: 10.1-19.5%) respectively. Subgroup analyses showed that full-time school attendance, non-Western countries, low and middle-income countries, and geographical locations might contribute to the higher aggregate prevalence of suicidal behaviors, deliberate self-harm, and non-suicidal self-injury. Conclusions: This meta-analysis found that non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal ideation, and deliberate self-harm were the three most common suicidal and self-harm behaviors in children and adolescents.

Suicide Attempts in Juvenile Bipolar Versus Major Depressive Disorders: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

Suicide attempts are prevalent in association with major mood disorders, and risk is greater with bipolar disorder (BD) than major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. There may be similar relationships in juvenile mood disorders, but the evidence has not been compiled systematically and quantitatively.

METHOD

We searched for reports of studies comparing rates of suicide attempts in children or adolescents diagnosed with BD or MDD, and applied random-effects meta-analysis.

RESULTS

In 6 reports from 1995 to 2017, with 2,303 participants diagnosed with mood disorder from the United States and South Korea, aged 3 to 18 years, rates of suicide attempts differed significantly by diagnosis: BD (31.5%) > MDD (20.5%) > hypomania or mania-only (8.49%). Risk of suicide attempts differed (BD > MDD) highly significantly by meta-analysis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.71, CI = 1.33-2.20, p < .0001), and was very similar if a study with attempts and suicidal ideation was excluded (OR = 1.64, CI = 1.26-2.15, p < .0001).

CONCLUSION

Risk of suicide attempts in juvenile mood disorder patients ranked: BD > MDD >> hypomania or mania-only >> juvenile general population.
