Study of the mechanical characteristics of coal-serial sandstone after high temperature treatment under true triaxial loading

In this study, a series of true triaxial loading tests were carried out on coal-measure sandstone after high temperature treatment by using a self-developed true triaxial test system combined with acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, and the mass loss, deformation characteristics and loss failure mode of sandstone before and after heat treatment were systematically studied. It is found that the true triaxial mechanical properties of sandstone after high temperature treatment are closely related to temperature, and the peak strength, maximum principal strain, volume strain, minimum fracture angle and elastic modulus, which all showed bimodal changes, and 800 °C is the threshold temperature of the first four parameters. The transition temperature of the elastic modulus is 400 °C. It is found that the test results of true triaxial high temperature sandstone are in good agreement with the existing true triaxial theory and test results. The failure forms of the samples at different temperatures show inverted "Y" or inverted "N" shapes. Shear failure occurs when the temperature is below 400 °C, and shear-tension failure occurs when the temperature is above 600 °C. At the same time, it is found that the AE signal has four periods, namely the quiet period, growth period, explosion period and decline period. The number of AE events corresponds to the deviatoric stress interval well. Experimental study of the mechanical properties of sandstone under the coupling effect of high temperature and true triaxial stress has guiding significance for the parameter selection and safety evaluation of roof sandstone in underground coal gasification.

Early estimation method of rockburst and large deformation of surrounding rock based on the deep borehole test

In geotechnical engineering, several major catastrophic accidents occur frequently in areas of high in-situ stress. To study the influence of high in-situ stress on deep mining, the in-situ stress was tested using the hydraulic fracturing method in the mine. Based on the measured data of the initial stress, a comprehensive evaluation of the stress field of the deep surrounding rocks was carried out. Combining the physical and mechanical indexes of the surrounding rocks, field measurements, and theoretical analysis, the Russenes criterion and Turchaninov criterion were applied to evaluate the propensity of rockbursts of hard rocks in the mine area. In addition, the large deformation of the soft rock in the mine was predicted based on the large deformation classification criteria. The results demonstrate that the vertical stress is linearly related to the depth. The horizontal principal stress values tested in all holes except boreholes G and I are approximately linearly distributed with depth. The greater the depth, the greater the propensity for rockburst. For obvious deviation from the maximum horizontal main stress direction of the mining tunnel, the tendency of rockburst during construction is greater. Slight deformation occurs when the tunnel surrounding rock is shallow than 660 m; larger deformation occurs when the burial depth exceeds 660 m. Level-Ⅱ or level-Ⅲ deformations may occur near the bottom of holes F, G, and I due to the lower uniaxial compressive strength of the phyllites of these holes.

An Experimental Study on the Effects of True Triaxial Loading and Unloading Stress Paths on the Mechanical Properties of Red Sandstone

Loading and unloading stress paths play critical roles in investigating the deformation and failure of roadway excavation. In this study, tests under four different loading and unloading stress paths were conducted on red sandstone samples, with the aid of a self-developed true triaxial test system. Meanwhile, the deformation and failure characteristics of the samples were monitored during the tests. The following research conclusions were obtained: The octahedral shear stress is linearly correlated with the average effective stress, and the correlation coefficient R2 is 0.9825. The Mogi–Coulomb strength criterion is superior to the Drucker–Prager strength criterion in reflecting strength failure characteristics of red sandstone during loading and unloading. Shear failure tends to occur under uniaxial compression, whereas shear–tensile composite failure occurs under loading and unloading conditions. Compared with the true triaxial loading test, loading and unloading tests produce a larger strain in the unloading direction. Under loading and unloading stress paths, with the increase in intermediate principal stress (IPS), the strain in the direction of IPS gradually changes from expansion to compression, and the peak strength gradually increases. The state of IPS affects the failure strength of the sample and reflects the strengthening effect of IPS. This paper boasts a certain value and significance for research on the deformation and failure characteristics of sandstone in the actual in situ stress environment with triaxial dynamic changes.

Stabilization of Rock Roadway under Obliquely Straddle Working Face

A floor rock roadway under an oblique straddle working face is a typical dynamic pressure roadway. Under the complex disturbance of excavation engineering works, the roadway often undergoes stress concentration and severe deformation and damage. To solve the problem of surrounding rock stability control for this roadway type, this study considered the East Forth main transport roadway in the floor strata of the 1762(3) working face of the Pansan coal mine. In situ ground pressure monitoring and numerical simulation calculation using the FLAC2D software were carried out. The influence laws of the surrounding rock lithology, the vertical and horizontal distance between the roadway and overlying working face, the positional relationship between the roadway and the overlying working face, and the support form and strength of the rock surrounding an oblique straddle roadway were obtained. Within the range of mining influence, the properties of the rock surrounding the roof and floor were very different, and the deformation of the rock surrounding the two sides exhibited regional difference. The influence range of the mining working face on the rock floor of the roadway was approximately 30–40 m, and that of horizontal mining was approximately 50–60 m. The mining influence on the rock surrounding the side roadway of the working face is large, but the mining influence on the roadway below is small. Using FLAC2D, the stress and displacement characteristics of the rock surrounding the obliquely straddle roadway were compared and analyzed when the bolt support, combined bolt and shed support, and bolt–shotcreting–grouting support were adopted, the proposed support scheme of bolting and shotcreting was successfully applied. The deformation of the rock surrounding the roadway was satisfactorily controlled, and the results were useful as a reference for similar roadway maintenance projects.

Mechanical and Acoustic Emission (AE) Characteristics of Rocks under Biaxial Confinements

The surrounding rocks of underground engineering are generally subjected to a biaxial compressive stress condition. The failure properties of rocks under such a stress condition are worthy of being studied to ensure the stability of surrounding rock. This study aims to investigate the mechanical characteristics and acoustic emission (AE) properties of granite, marble, and sandstone in biaxial compression tests. Under biaxial confinements, it is evident that the elastic moduli of the three types of rocks decrease, and the plasticity increases monotonously with the increase of the intermediate principal stress σ2. As σ2 increases, the biaxial compressive strength σbcs of rock increases initially and subsequently decreases. The lateral strain ε2 of rock under biaxial confinement is controlled by both σ1 and σ2, and the restrain degree in the development of microcracks and the constrain extent in the expansion along the direction of σ2 are both enhanced gradually with increase in σ2. The sharp increase points of AE hit and AE count indicate that the failure will occur soon. The AF-RA distribution of AE signals shows that the increase of σ2 causes more tensile cracks in rock. According to the dip failure angle of macro-cracks in rock under biaxial confinement, the failure modes of granite and marble are slabbing, while failure mode of sandstone is shear. In addition, the σ2 has a positive effect on the mass ratio of large size fragments after rock failure. An exponent relationship between the σbcs and σ2 was found, and the inner apices–inscribed Drucker–Prager criterion can be used to predict the σbcs of rock.

The Geomechanical and Fault Activation Modeling during CO2 Injection into Deep Minjur Reservoir, Eastern Saudi Arabia

The release of large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere is one of the major causes of global warming. The most viable method to control the level of CO2 in the atmosphere is to capture and permanently sequestrate the excess amount of CO2 in subsurface geological reservoirs. The injection of CO2 gives rise to pore pressure buildup. It is crucial to monitor the rising pore pressure in order to prevent the potential failure of the reservoir and the subsequent leakage of the stored CO2 into the overburden layers, and then back to the atmosphere. In this paper, the Minjur sandstone reservoir in eastern Saudi Arabia was considered for establishing a coupled geomechanical model and performing the corresponding stability analysis. During the geomechanical modeling process, the fault passing through the Minjur and Marrat layers was also considered. The injection-induced pore-pressure and ground uplift profiles were calculated for the case of absence of a fault across the reservoir, as well as the case with a fault. The stability analysis was performed using the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. In the current study, the excessive increase in pore pressure, in the absence of geological faults, moved the reservoir closer to the failure envelope, but in the presence of geological faults, the reservoir reached to the failure envelope and the faults were activated. The developed geomechanical model provided estimates for the safe injection parameters of CO2 based on the magnitudes of the reservoir pore pressure and stresses in the reservoir.
