Fog and rain water chemistry in a tea plantation of northern Taiwan

Tea plantations are expanding globally and many are in mountainous areas with frequent fog but few studies have examined fog chemistry in these areas. We examined chemical composition of fog and rain water at a tea plantation in northern Taiwan. Fog water was collected using a Kroneis passive cylindrical fog-water collector and rain water was collected using a 20-cm-diameter funnel. The most abundant ions were Cl- and Na+ in both fog and rain waters due to the proximity of the site to the coast. The order of abundance of other ions was NO3-  > Mg2+  > SO42-  > Ca2+  > NH4+  > K+  > H+ in fog water and SO42-  > K+  > NO3-  > NH4+  > Ca2+  > Mg2+  > H+ in rain water. The concentration enrichment ratio (fog to rain) ranged between 2.2 (K+) and 22 (Mg2+) lying between sites near major emission sources and sites in remote areas, possibly because the immediate surrounding landscape is covered with secondary forests although it is near large cities. Factor analysis highlights the influences of sea-salt aerosols on the variation of fog and rain water chemistry. Sea-salt corrections using Na+ as the sea salt tracer led to negative concentrations of Cl- and Mg2+ suggesting that assumptions involved in sea-salt corrections were not satisfied. Agriculture influence is identified as a unique factor for explaining variance of K+, NH4+, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) concentrations in fog water but not rain water. Ion concentrations in fog and rain water were generally higher in the weekly samples associated with air trajectories passing through the continental East Asia than those associated with oceanic trajectories pointing to the role of regional pollution sources in affecting local fog and rain water chemistry. Our study highlights greater effects of tea agriculture on fog than rain water chemistry.

Determination of Cd, Pb, and Cu in the Atmospheric Aerosol of Central East Antarctica at Dome C (Concordia Station)

Trace heavy metals Cd, Pb, and Cu were determined (by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry) in aerosol samples collected at Dome C (the Italo-French Station Concordia), a remote site of the Central East Antarctic plateau, for which no data are available until now. During the Austral Summer 2005-2006, three PM10 high-volume impactors were installed in two locations nearby of Concordia station: the first one very close and downwind of the station (about 50 m north), the other two (very close to each other) in a 'distant' site, upwind of the station and close to the astrophysics tent (not used in that expedition) at ~800 m south of Station Concordia. For each sample, the availability of the mass of the aerosol collected (obtained by differential weighing carried out on site), in addition to the volume of the filtered air, allowed us to express results both in terms of metal mass fractions in the aerosol and in the usual way of metal atmospheric concentrations. Metal contents increased in the order Cd < Pb < Cu with the following ranges of values: Cd 1.0-8.4 µg g-1 (0.09-3.1 pg m-3), Pb 96-470 µg g-1 (12-62 pg m-3), and Cu 0.17-20 mg g-1 (0.027-2.4 ng m-3). From the metal temporal profiles obtained we estimated the following background values for the area of Dome C, expressed both in mass fractions and in atmospheric concentrations: Cd 1.2 ± 0.2 µg g-1 (0.24 ± 0.13 pg m-3), Pb (here fixed as upper limit) 113 ± 13 µg g-1 (21 ± 8 pg m-3), and Cu 0.91 ± 0.48 mg g-1 (0.12 ± 0.07 ng m-3). The highest values were observed in the first part of the season, and particularly for the site close to the station, possibly related to sample contamination linked to intense activity at the Concordia station connected with the beginning of the expedition, including aircraft arrivals/departures. Increments of up to 10 times (and even 20 times for Cu) were recorded with respect to the background values. The metal excesses of the contaminated over background samples were found approximately, except for Cu, in the same proportion of the metal contents of the special Antarctic blend (SAB) diesel fuel, which is used almost exclusively at Concordia Station. The effect of the wind direction was also observed. Thus in the intermediate period of the campaign, when the wind direction reversed for several days with respect to the prevailing one, Cd and Pb metal contents decreased at the sampling point installed close to the station, now upwind of Concordia station, and increased at the 'clean' site astrophysics tent, turned downwind at the main station. No simple and easily interpretable effect of the wind direction was observed for Cu, which suggests that some other extemporaneous and not clearly identified factor may have intervened in this case. These results suggest that the human impact at Dome C influences mainly the zone very close to the station, but also the area in the neighborhood, including the supposed clean site of the astrophysics tent (about 800 m far from the station), when the wind direction reverses with respect to the prevailing one, leaving the site downwind of the station Concordia. Since no other data are reported for the Dome C area, our results are compared with literature data referred to the South Pole Station (the only other plateau site for which data are available) and several other coastal Antarctic sites, observing that our results (excluding Cu) are the lowest ever observed for Antarctic aerosol.

Atmospheric sea-salt and halogen cycles in the Antarctic

Atmospheric sea-salt and halogen cycles play important roles in atmospheric science and chemistry including cloud processes and oxidation capacity in the Antarctic troposphere. This paper presents a review and summarizes current knowledge related to sea-salt and halogen chemistry in the Antarctic. First, presented are the seasonal variations and size distribution of sea-salt aerosols (SSAs). Second, SSA origins and sea-salt fractionation on sea-ice and ice sheets on the Antarctic continent are presented and discussed. Third, we discuss SSA release from the cryosphere. Fourth, we present SSA dispersion in the Antarctic troposphere and transport into inland areas. Fifth, heterogeneous reactions on SSAs as a source of reactive halogen species and their relationship with atmospheric chemistry are shown and discussed. Finally, we attempt to propose an outlook for obtaining better knowledge related to sea-salt and halogen chemistry and their effects on the Antarctic and the Arctic.

Contribution of Water-Soluble Organic Matter from Multiple Marine Geographic Eco-Regions to Aerosols around Antarctica

We present shipborne measurements of size-resolved concentrations of aerosol components across ocean waters next to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Orkney Islands, and South Georgia Island, evidencing aerosol features associated with distinct eco-regions. Nonmethanesulfonic acid Water-Soluble Organic Matter (WSOM) represented 6-8% and 11-22% of the aerosol PM₁ mass originated in open ocean (OO) and sea ice (SI) regions, respectively. Other major components included sea salt (86-88% OO, 24-27% SI), non sea salt sulfate (3-4% OO, 35-40% SI), and MSA (1-2% OO, 11-12% SI). The chemical composition of WSOM encompasses secondary organic components with diverse behaviors: while alkylamine concentrations were higher in SI air masses, oxalic acid showed higher concentrations in the open ocean air. Our online single-particle mass spectrometry data exclude a widespread source from sea bird colonies, while the secondary production of oxalic acid and sulfur-containing organic species via cloud processing is suggested. We claim that the potential impact of the sympagic planktonic ecosystem on aerosol composition has been overlooked in past studies, and multiple eco-regions act as distinct aerosol sources around Antarctica.

Antarctic Sea Ice Proxies from Marine and Ice Core Archives Suitable for Reconstructing Sea Ice over the Past 2000 Years

Dramatic changes in sea ice have been observed in both poles in recent decades. However, the observational period for sea ice is short, and the climate models tasked with predicting future change in sea ice struggle to capture the current Antarctic trends. Paleoclimate archives, from marine sedimentary records and coastal Antarctic ice cores, provide a means of understanding sea ice variability and its drivers over decadal to centennial timescales. In this study, we collate published records of Antarctic sea ice over the past 2000 years (2 ka). We evaluate the current proxies and explore the potential of combining marine and ice core records to produce multi-archive reconstructions. Despite identifying 92 sea ice reconstructions, the spatial and temporal resolution is only sufficient to reconstruct circum-Antarctic sea ice during the 20th century, not the full 2 ka. Our synthesis reveals a 90 year trend of increasing sea ice in the Ross Sea and declining sea ice in the Bellingshausen, comparable with observed trends since 1979. Reconstructions in the Weddell Sea, the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean reveal small negative trends in sea ice during the 20th century (1900–1990), in contrast to the observed sea ice expansion in these regions since 1979.

Particle size distribution of inorganic and organic ions in coastal and inland Antarctic aerosol

The concentration and particle-size distribution of ionic species in Antarctic aerosol samples were determined to investigate their potential sources, chemical evolution, and transport. We analyzed aerosol samples collected at two different Antarctic sites: a coastal site near Victoria Land close to the Italian Research Base "Mario Zucchelli", and another site located on the Antarctic plateau, close to Italian-French Concordia Research Station. We investigated anionic compounds using ion-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, and cationic species through capillary ion chromatography with conductometry. Aerosol collected close to the coast was mainly characterized by sea salt species such as Na⁺, Mg²⁺, and SO₄^2-. These species represented a percentage of 88% of the total sum of all detected ionic species in the aerosol samples from the coastal site. These species were mainly distributed in the coarse fraction, confirming the presence of primary aerosol near the ocean source. Aerosol collected over the Antarctic plateau was characterized by high acidity, with nss-SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, and methanesulfonic acid as the most abundant species. These species were mainly distributed in the <0.49 μm fraction, and they had a behavior of a typical secondary aerosol, where several chemical and physical processes occurred.

Accumulation of semivolatile organic compounds in Antarctic vegetation: a case study of polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Antarctic plant communities are dominated by lichens and mosses which accumulate semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) directly from the atmosphere. Differences in the levels of PBDEs observed in lichens and mosses collected at King George Island in the austral summers 2004-05 and 2005-06 are probably explained by environmental and/or plant parameters. Contamination of lichens showed a positive correlation with local precipitation, suggesting that wet deposition processes are a major mechanism controlling the uptake of most PBDE congeners. These findings are in agreement with physical-chemical data supporting that tetra- through hepta-BDEs in the Antarctic atmosphere are basically bound to aerosols. Conversely, accumulation of PBDEs in mosses appears to be controlled by other environmental factors and/or plant-specific characteristics. Model simulations demonstrated that an ocean-atmosphere coupling may have played a role in the long-range transport of less volatile SOCs such as PBDEs to Antarctica. According to simulations, the atmosphere is the most important transport medium for PBDEs while the surface ocean serves as a temporary storage compartment, boosting the deposition/volatilization "hopping" effect similarly to vegetation on continents.

Biodiversity of air-borne microorganisms at Halley Station, Antarctica

A study of air-borne microbial biodiversity over an isolated scientific research station on an ice-shelf in continental Antarctica was undertaken to establish the potential source of microbial colonists. The study aimed to assess: (1) whether microorganisms were likely to have a local (research station) or distant (marine or terrestrial) origin, (2) the effect of changes in sea ice extent on microbial biodiversity and (3) the potential human impact on the environment. Air samples were taken above Halley Research Station during the austral summer and austral winter over a 2-week period. Overall, a low microbial biodiversity was detected, which included many sequence replicates. No significant patterns were detected in the aerial biodiversity between the austral summer and the austral winter. In common with other environmental studies, particularly in the polar regions, many of the sequences obtained were from as yet uncultivated organisms. Very few marine sequences were detected irrespective of the distance to open water, and around one-third of sequences detected were similar to those identified in human studies, though both of these might reflect prevailing wind conditions. The detected aerial microorganisms were markedly different from those obtained in earlier studies over the Antarctic Peninsula in the maritime Antarctic.

Surface-level fine particle mass concentrations: from hemispheric distributions to megacity sources

Since 1990, basic knowledge of the "chemical climate" of fine particles, has greatly improved from Junge's compilation from the 1960s. A worldwide baseline distribution of fine particle concentrations on a synoptic scale of approximately 1000 km can be estimated at least qualitatively from measurements. A geographical distribution of fine particle characteristics is deduced from a synthesis of a variety of disparate data collected at ground level on all continents, especially in the northern hemisphere. On the average, the regional mass concentrations range from 1 to 80 microg/m3, with the highest concentrations in regions of high population density and industrialization. Fine particles by mass on a continental and hemispheric spatial scale are generally dominated by non-sea salt sulfate (0.2 to approximately 20 microg/m3, or approximately 25%) and organic carbon (0.2-> 10 microg/m3, or approximately 25%), with lesser contributions of ammonium, nitrate, elemental carbon, and elements found in sea salt or soil dust. The crustal and trace metal elements contribute a varied amount to fine particle mass depending on location, with a larger contribution in marine conditions or during certain events such as dust storms or volcanic disturbances. The average distribution of mass concentration and major components depends on the proximity to areal aggregations of sources, most of which are continental in origin, with contributions from sea salt emissions in the marine environment. The highest concentrations generally are within or near very large population and industrial centers, especially in Asia, including parts of China and India, as well as North America and Europe. Natural sources of blowing dust, sea salt, and wildfires contribute to large, intermittent spatial-scale particle loadings beyond these ranges. A sampling of 10 megacities illustrates a range of characteristic particle composition, dependent on local and regional sources. Long-range transport of pollution from spatially aggregated sources over hundreds of kilometers creates persistent regional- and continental-scale gradients of mass concentration, sulfate, and carbon species especially in the northern hemisphere. Data are sparse in the southern hemisphere, especially beyond 45 degrees S, but are generally very low in mass concentrations.

Freezing Halide Ion Solutions and the Release of Interhalogens to the Atmosphere

The effect of freezing on a variety of acidified and neutral, nitrite ion and halide-containing mixtures has been investigated using UV/vis spectroscopy. Several trihalide ions were formed and monitored, including I(2)Cl(-), I(2)Br(-), ICl(2)(-) and IBr(2)(-). A mechanism to explain the observations is given in terms of steps involving INO and the nitroacidium ion, [H(2)ONO](+). The transformation of sea salt components to specific trihalide ions by freezing represents a potentially important process in a polar atmospheric context. This is because the dichloro- and dibromo-trihalide ions can release chlorine- and bromine-containing gases, which are key intermediates in ozone destruction.
