Post-spinel-type AB2O4 high-pressure phases in geochemistry and materials science

Post-spinel-type AB2O4 compounds are stable at higher pressures than spinel phases. These compounds have garnered much interest in geo- and materials science for their geochemical importance as well as potential application as high ionic conductors and materials with strongly correlated electrons. Here, large-volume high-pressure syntheses, structural features and properties of post-spinels are reviewed. Prospects are discussed for future searches for post-spinel-type phases by applying advanced large-volume high-pressure technology.

Hexagonal Si-Ge Class of Semiconducting Alloys Prepared by Using Pressure and Temperature

Multi-anvil and laser-heated diamond anvil methods have been used to subject Ge and Si mixtures to pressures and temperatures of between 12 and 17 GPa and 1500-1800 K, respectively. Synchrotron angle dispersive X-ray diffraction, precession electron diffraction and chemical analysis using electron microscopy, reveal recovery at ambient pressure of hexagonal Ge-Si solid solutions (P6₃ /mmc). Taken together, the multi-anvil and diamond anvil results reveal that hexagonal solid solutions can be prepared for all Ge-Si compositions. This hexagonal class of solid solutions constitutes a significant expansion of the bulk Ge-Si solid solution family, and is of interest for optoelectronic applications.

An Ultrahigh CO2-Loaded Silicalite-1 Zeolite: Structural Stability and Physical Properties at High Pressures and Temperatures

We report the formation of an ultrahigh CO₂-loaded pure-SiO₂ silicalite-1 structure at high pressure (0.7 GPa) from the interaction of empty zeolite and fluid CO₂ medium. The CO₂-filled structure was characterized in situ by means of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Rietveld refinements and Fourier recycling allowed the location of 16 guest carbon dioxide molecules per unit cell within the straight and sinusoidal channels of the porous framework to be analyzed. The complete filling of pores by CO₂ molecules favors structural stability under compression, avoiding pressure-induced amorphization below 20 GPa, and significantly reduces the compressibility of the system compared to that of the parental empty one. The structure of CO₂-loaded silicalite-1 was also monitored at high pressures and temperatures, and its thermal expansivity was estimated.

Fracture-induced amorphization of polycrystalline SiO2 stishovite: a potential platform for toughening in ceramics

Silicon dioxide has eight stable crystalline phases at conditions of the Earth's rocky parts. Many metastable phases including amorphous phases have been known, which indicates the presence of large kinetic barriers. As a consequence, some crystalline silica phases transform to amorphous phases by bypassing the liquid via two different pathways. Here we show a new pathway, a fracture-induced amorphization of stishovite that is a high-pressure polymorph. The amorphization accompanies a huge volume expansion of ~100% and occurs in a thin layer whose thickness from the fracture surface is several tens of nanometers. Amorphous silica materials that look like strings or worms were observed on the fracture surfaces. The amount of amorphous silica near the fracture surfaces is positively correlated with indentation fracture toughness. This result indicates that the fracture-induced amorphization causes toughening of stishovite polycrystals. The fracture-induced solid-state amorphization may provide a potential platform for toughening in ceramics.

Dense Si(x)Ge(1-x) (0 < x < 1) materials landscape using extreme conditions and precession electron diffraction

High-pressure and -temperature experiments on Ge and Si mixtures to 17 GPa and 1500 K allow us to obtain extended Ge-Si solid solutions with cubic (Ia3) and tetragonal (P4(3)2(1)2) crystal symmetries at ambient pressure. The cubic modification can be obtained with up to 77 atom % Ge and the tetragonal modification for Ge concentrations above that. Together with Hume-Rothery criteria, melting point convergence is employed here as a favored attribute for solid solution formation. These compositionally tunable alloys are of growing interest for advanced transport and optoelectronic applications. Furthermore, the work illustrates the significance of employing precession electron diffraction for mapping new materials landscapes resulting from tailored high-pressure and -temperature syntheses.

Reaction of rhenium and carbon at high pressures and temperatures

A study of the reaction of rhenium with carbon at high-(P, T) conditions up to P max = 67 GPa and T max = 3800 K is presented. A hexagonal ReC x was identified as the stable phase at high-(P, T) conditions. A composition of ReC0.5 is proposed. No evidence for a cubic ReC polymorph with rocksalt structure, as suggested in the literature, or for any other phase was found at the P-T conditions explored. A preliminary P-T rhenium-carbon phase diagram has been derived and properties such as bulk moduli and elastic stiffness coefficients were obtained.

Ab initio thermodynamics of MgSiO3 perovskite at high pressures and temperatures

Using quantum-mechanical simulations based on density-functional perturbation theory, we address the problem of stability of MgSiO3 perovskite to decomposition into MgO and SiO2 at pressures and temperatures of the Earth's lower mantle. We show that MgSiO3 perovskite (and its post-perovskite phase) is more stable than the mixture of oxides throughout the pressure-temperature regime of the Earth's mantle. Structural stability and lattice dynamics of phases in the system MgO-SiO2 are discussed.
