An electrophysiological signature of summed similarity in visual working memory

Brain activity in the moments leading up to spontaneous verbal recall provide a window into the cognitive processes underlying memory retrieval. But these same recordings also subsume neural signals unrelated to mnemonic retrieval, such as response-related motor activity. Here we examined spectral EEG biomarkers of memory retrieval under an extreme manipulation of mnemonic demands: subjects either recalled items after a few seconds or after several days. This manipulation helped to isolate EEG components specifically related to long-term memory retrieval. In the moments immediately preceding recall we observed increased theta (4-8 Hz) power (+T), decreased alpha (8-20 Hz) power (-A), and increased gamma (40-128 Hz) power (+G), with this spectral pattern (+T-A + G) distinguishing the long-delay and immediate recall conditions. As subjects vocalized the same set of studied words in both conditions, we interpret the spectral +T-A + G as a biomarker of episodic memory retrieval.

Relation between centro-parietal positivity and diffusion model parameters in both perceptual and memory-based decision making

Several studies have suggested that the centro-parietal positivity (CPP), an EEG potential occurring approximately 500 ms post-stimulus, reflects the accumulation of evidence for making a decision. Yet, most previous studies of the CPP focused exclusively on perceptual decisions with very simple stimuli. In this study, we examined how the dynamics of the CPP depended on the type of decision being made, and whether its slope was related to parameters of an accumulator model of decision making. We show initial evidence that memory- and perceptual decisions about carefully-controlled face stimuli exhibit similar dynamics, but offset by a time difference in decision onset. Importantly, the individual-trial slopes of the CPP are related to the accumulator model's drift parameter. These findings help to further understand the role of the CPP across different kinds of decisions.

Predictions through evidence accumulation over time

It has been proposed that the brain specializes in predicting future states of the environment. These predictions are probabilistic, and must be continuously updated on the basis of their mismatch with actual evidence. Although electrophysiological data disclose neural activity patterns in relation to predictive processes, little is known about how this activity supports prediction build-up through evidence accumulation. Here we addressed this gap. Participants were required to make moment-by-moment predictions about stimuli presented in sequences in which gathering evidence from previous items as they were presented was either possible or not. Two event-related potentials (ERP), a frontocentral P2 and a central P3, were sensitive to information accumulation throughout the sequence. Time-frequency (TF) analyses revealed that prediction build-up process also modulated centrally distributed theta activity, and that alpha power was suppressed in anticipation to fully predictable stimuli. Results are in agreement with the notion of predictions as probability distributions and highlight the ability of observers to extract those probabilities in a changing environment and to adjust their predictions consequently.
