Abstract
Managing multiple tasks simultaneously often results in performance decrements due to limited cognitive resources. Task prioritization, requiring effective cognitive control, is a strategy to mitigate these effects and is influenced by the stability-flexibility dilemma. While previous studies have investigated the stability-flexibility dilemma in fully manual multitasking environments, this study explores how cognitive control modes interact with automation reliability. While no significant interaction between control mode and automation reliability was observed in single multitasking performance, our findings demonstrate that overall task performance benefits from a flexible cognitive control mode when automation is reliable. However, when automation is unreliable, a stable cognitive control mode improves manual takeover performance, though this comes at the expense of secondary task performance. Furthermore, cognitive control modes and automation reliability independently affect various eye-tracking metrics and mental workload. These findings underscore the need to integrate cognitive control and automation reliability into adaptive assistance systems, particularly during the perceive stage, to enhance safety in human-machine systems.

Abstract
Cognitive stability, the ability to focus on a current task, and cognitive flexibility, the ability to switch between different tasks, are traditionally conceptualized as opposing end-points on a one-dimensional continuum. This assumption obligates a stability-flexibility trade-off - greater stability equates to less flexibility, and vice versa. In contrast, a recent cued task-switching study suggested that stability and flexibility can be regulated independently, evoking a two-dimensional perspective where trade-offs are optional (Geddert & Egner, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 151, 3009-3027, 2022). This raises the question of under what circumstances trade-offs occur. We here tested the hypothesis that trade-offs are guided by cost-of-control considerations whereby stability and flexibility trade off in contexts that selectively promote stability or flexibility, but not when neither or both are promoted. This proposal was probed by analyzing whether a trial-level metric of a stability-flexibility trade-off, an interaction between task-rule congruency and task sequence, varied as a function of a broader block-level context that independently varied demands on stability or flexibility by manipulating the proportion of incongruent and switch trials, respectively. In Experiment 1, we reanalyzed data from Geddert and Egner, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 151, 3009-3027, (2022); Experiment 2 was a conceptual replication with a design tweak that controlled for potential confounds due to local trial history effects. The experiments produced robust evidence for independent stability and flexibility adaptation, and for a context-dependent expression of trial-level stability-flexibility trade-offs that generally conformed to the cost-of-control predictions. The current study thus documents that stability-flexibility trade-offs are not obligatory but arise in contexts where either stability or flexibility are selectively encouraged.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between insomnia symptoms and cognitive flexibility among undergraduates, along with its potential neural mechanisms. METHOD A total of 102 participants were divided into insomnia (n = 55) and control (n = 47) groups based on sleep status. Cognitive flexibility was assessed using the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI) and the Number-Letter Task (N-L task). EEG data were recorded during the N-L task. RESULTS The insomnia group exhibited lower CFI scores and higher switch costs in reaction time and accuracy compared to the control group. ERP analysis showed differences in P2, N2, and P3 component amplitudes between the two groups, with reduced N2 amplitude in the insomnia group under repeat trials. Time-frequency analysis revealed larger theta band event related synchronization in the frontal region and smaller theta band ERS in the parietal region under switch trials in the control group; the alpha band event-related desynchronization in the parietal region under repeat trials was significantly smaller in the control group compared to switch trials. CONCLUSION Compared to undergraduates with normal sleep, those with insomnia symptoms exhibited reduced cognitive flexibility, which may be associated with some alterations in brain electrophysiological activities.

Abstract
Task-switching experiments have shown that the "switch cost" (poorer performance for task switches than for repetitions) is smaller when the probability of a switch is high (e.g., 0.75) than when it is low (e.g., 0.25). Some theoretical accounts explain this effect in terms of top-down control deployed in advance of the task cue ("pre-cue reconfiguration"). We tested such accounts by manipulating the time available before the onset of the cue (the response-cue interval, RCI), reasoning that top-down pre-cue reconfiguration requires time and therefore its effect should increase with RCI. Participants heard a man and a woman simultaneously speaking number words and categorised the number (< 5 vs. > 5) spoken by the voice specified by a pictorial gender-related cue presented at an RCI of 100 ms or 2,200 ms. The target voice switched with a probability of 0.25 or 0.75 (in separate sessions). In Experiment 1, RTs revealed a large effect of switch probability on the switch cost in the short RCI, which did not increase in the long RCI. Errors hinted at such an increase, but it did not receive clear statistical support and was disconfirmed by a direct and better powered replication in Experiment 2, which fully confirmed the RT pattern from Experiment 1. Thus, the effect of switch probability on the switch cost required little/no time following the response to emerge-it was already at full magnitude at a short RCI-challenging accounts that assume "phasic" deployment of top-down task-set control in advance of the cue.

Abstract
Switching auditory attention to one of two (or more) simultaneous voices incurs a substantial performance overhead. Whether/when this voice 'switch cost' reduces when the listener has opportunity to prepare in silence is not clear-the findings on the effect of preparation on the switch cost range from (near) null to substantial. We sought to determine which factors are crucial for encouraging preparation and detecting its effect on the switch cost in a paradigm where participants categorized the number spoken by one of two simultaneous voices; the target voice, which changed unpredictably, was specified by a visual cue depicting the target's gender. First, we manipulated the probability of a voice switch. When 25% of trials were switches, increasing the preparation interval (50/800/1,400 ms) resulted in substantial (~50%) reduction in switch cost. No reduction was observed when 75% of trials were switches. Second, we examined the relative prevalence of low-conflict, 'congruent' trials (where the numbers spoken by the two voices were mapped onto the same response) and high-conflict, 'incongruent' trials (where the voices afforded different responses). 'Conflict prevalence' had a strong effect on selectivity-the incongruent-congruent difference ('congruence effect') was reduced in the 66%-incongruent condition relative to the 66%-congruent condition-but conflict prevalence did not discernibly interact with preparation and its effect on the switch cost. Thus, conditions where switches of target voice are relatively rare are especially conducive to preparation, possibly because attention is committed more strongly to (and/or disengaged less rapidly from) the perceptual features of target voice.

Abstract
The capacity for goal-directed behavior relies on the generation and implementation of task sets. While task sets are traditionally defined as mnemonic ensembles linking task goals to stimulus-response mappings, we here asked the question whether they may also entail information about task difficulty: does the level of focus required for performing a task become incorporated within the task set? We addressed this question by employing a cued task-switching protocol, wherein participants engaged in two intermixed tasks with trial-unique stimuli. Both tasks were equally challenging during a baseline and a transfer phase, while their difficulty was manipulated during an intermediate learning phase by varying the proportion of trials with congruent versus incongruent response mappings between the two tasks. Comparing congruency effects between the baseline and transfer phases, Experiment 1 showed that the task with a low (high) proportion of congruent trials in the learning phase displayed reduced (increased) cross-task interference effects in the transfer phase, indicating that the level of task focus required in the learning phase had become associated with each task set. Experiment 2 indicated that strengthening of task focus level in the task with a low proportion of congruent trials was the primary driver of this effect. Experiment 3 ruled out the possibility of cue-control associations mediating this effect. Taken together, our results show that task sets can become associated with the focus level required to successfully implement them, thus significantly expanding our concept of the type of information that makes up a task set. Abstract
Cognitive flexibility denotes the ability to disengage from a current task and shift one's focus to a different activity. An individual's level of flexibility is not fixed; rather, people adapt their readiness to switch tasks to changing circumstances. We here review recent studies in the task-switching literature that have produced new insights into the contextual factors that drive this adaptation of flexibility, as well as proposals regarding the underlying cognitive mechanisms and learning processes. A fast-growing literature suggests that there are several different means of learning the need for, and implementing, changes in one's level of flexibility. These, in turn, have distinct consequences for the degree to which adjustments in cognitive flexibility are transferrable to new stimuli and tasks.

Abstract
Adaptive behaviour requires the ability to focus on a task and protect it from distraction (cognitive stability) and to rapidly switch tasks when circumstances change (cognitive flexibility). Burgeoning research literatures have aimed to understand how people achieve task focus and task switch readiness. In this Perspective, I integrate these literatures to derive a cognitive architecture and functional rules underlying the regulation of cognitive stability and flexibility. I propose that task focus and task switch readiness are supported by independent mechanisms. However, I also suggest that the strategic regulation of both mechanisms is governed by shared learning principles: an incremental, online learner that nudges control up or down based on the recent history of task demands (a recency heuristic) and episodic reinstatement when the current context matches a past experience (a recognition heuristic). Finally, I discuss algorithmic and neural implementations of these processes, as well as clinical implications.

Abstract
Cognitive control can be applied flexibly when task goals or environments change (i.e., cognitive flexibility), or stably to pursue a goal in the face of distraction (i.e., cognitive stability). Whether these seemingly contradictory characteristics have an inverse relationship has been controversial, as some studies have suggested a trade-off mechanism between cognitive flexibility and cognitive stability, while others have not found such reciprocal associations. This study investigated the possible antagonistic correlation between cognitive flexibility and stability using a novel version of the flexibility-stability paradigm and the classic cued task switching paradigm. In Experiment 1, we showed that cognitive flexibility was inversely correlated with cognitive stability, as increased distractor proportions were associated with decreased cognitive flexibility and greater cognitive stability. Moreover, cognitive flexibility and stability were regulated by a single control system instead of two independent control mechanisms, as the model selection results indicated that the reciprocally regulated model with one integration parameter outperformed all other models, and the model parameter was inversely linked to cognitive flexibility and stability. We found similar results using the classic cued task switching paradigm in Experiment 2. Therefore, a trade-off between cognitive flexibility and stability was observed from the paradigms used in this study.
