Fungal and Oomycete Diseases of Tropical Tree Fruit Crops

The tropics produce a range of fruit from tree crops that cannot be grown in colder climates. Bananas, mangos, several nuts, spices, coffee, and cacao are widely traded and much sought after around the world. However, the sustainable production of these tropical tree fruit crops faces significant challenges. Among these, losses due to pests and diseases play a large part in reducing yields, quality, and profitability. Using bananas and cacao as key examples, we outline some of the reasons fungal and oomycete diseases cause such significant losses to tropical tree crops. Cultivation of monocultures derived from limited genetic diversity, environmental conditions conducive for disease development, high levels of disease incidence and severity, a lack of disease resistance in planting materials, shortages of labor, and inadequate infrastructure and investment pose significant challenges, especially for smallholder producers. The expansion of travel and trade has given rise to emerging infectious plant diseases that add further insecurity and pressure. We conclude that holistic actions are needed on multiple fronts to address the growing problem of disease in tropical fruit tree crops.

Quantitative X-ray Absorption and Emission Spectroscopies: Electronic Structure Elucidation of Cu2S and CuS

The electronic structures of Cu₂S and CuS have been under intense scrutiny, with the aim of understanding the relationship between their electronic structures and commercially important physical properties. Here, X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopic data have been analyzed using a quantitative, molecular orbital (MO) based approach to understand the electronic structure of these two complex systems. Cu₂S is shown to have a significant amount of Cu²⁺ sites and therefore Cu⁰ centers. The presence of low-valent Cu is correlated with the electrical conductivity of Cu₂S, especially at high temperatures. CuS is shown to have tetrahedral Cu²⁺ and trigonal Cu¹⁺ sites, with crystal planes that have alternating high and low charge on the Cu centers. These alternating charges may contribute to internal energy transitions required for photoluminescence properties. The in-depth electronic structure solutions presented here not only solve a complicated much-debated problem, but also demonstrate the strength of quantitative MO based approach to X-ray spectroscopies.

Cacao diseases-the trilogy revisited

ABSTRACT This paper reviews the significant advances by the diseases themselves, as well as by the scientists, in the intervening period since the disease trilogy was first delimited in 1989. The impact of these diseases, black pod, witches' broom, and frosty pod rot, has increased dramatically. In addition, there have been radical changes in the taxonomic profiles of these pathogens, which have been based on both traditional (morphological, cytological) and modern (molecular) approaches. Black pod is caused by a complex of Phytophthora species, in which P. palmivora still is the most important worldwide. However, recent invasion of the principal cacao-growing countries of West Africa by the more virulent P. megakarya has been cause for concern. The latter evolved in the ancient forests straddling the Cameroon-Nigerian border as a primary coloniser of fallen fruit. Conversely, frosty pod rot, caused by Moniliophthora roreri, and witches' broom, caused by M. (Crinipellis) perniciosa, both neotropical diseases, are hemibiotrophic, coevolved pathogens. Respectively, M. roreri arose on Theobroma gileri in submontane forests on the north-western slopes of the Andes, whereas M. perniciosa developed as a complex of pathotypes with a considerably wider geographic and host range within South America; the cacao pathotype evolved on that host in the Amazon basin. The inter-relationships of these vicariant species and their recent spread are discussed, together with control strategies.

Phytophthora captiosa sp. nov. and P. fallax sp. nov. causing crown dieback of Eucalyptus in New Zealand

A locally severe crown disease of exotic plantation Eucalyptus trees has been recorded periodically in New Zealand since 1986. Symptoms include leaf spots, petiole infection and twig and small branch lesions. Outbreaks of disease are episodic and individual trees may show marked variation in crown symptoms ranging from unaffected to total defoliation. Two previously unknown species of Phytophthora are associated with the disease. These are described and formally designated here as P. captiosa, from Eucalyptus botryoides and E. saligna; and P. fallax, from E. delegatensis, E. fastigata, E. nitens and E. regnans. Both P. captiosa and P. fallax have non-papillate, non-caducous sporangia and both are self-fertile. Phylogenetic analysis on the basis of ITS rDNA sequence data indicates they are closely related to each other but evolutionarily distant from the majority of described Phytophthora taxa. They share a common ancestor with another assemblage of Phytophthora lineages that includes P. insolita, P. macrochlamydospora and P. richardiae. Sporulation of P. captiosa and P. fallax has not been observed in the field. The mode of infection and spread of these non-caducous Phytophthora species in the eucalypt tree canopy remains unknown. This issue, and the possible geographic origins of these two Phytophthora species are discussed.

Survival of Conidia of Discula destructiva in Frass of the Convergent Lady Beetle

The survival of conidia of Discula destructiva in frass of convergent lady beetles (Hippodamia convergens) was investigated. D. destructiva was isolated from frass pellets of 76% of adult convergent lady beetles exposed to D. destructiva for 1 h. Of the beetles from which D. destructiva was initially isolated, more than 80, 32, 19, 13, and 12.5% retained viable conidia of D. destructiva internally for at least 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, respectively. Numbers of conidia, estimated with a hemacytometer, ranged from 0 to 3.2 × 10⁶ conidia per frass pellet.
