Abstract
PURPOSE Visual impairment-related disabilities have become increasingly pervasive. Current reports estimate a total of 36 million persons with blindness and 217 million persons with moderate to severe visual impairment worldwide. Assistive technologies (AT), including text-to-speech software, navigational/spatial guides, and object recognition tools have the capacity to improve the lives of people with blindness and low vision. However, access to such AT is constrained by high costs and implementation barriers. More recently, expansive growth in mobile computing has enabled many technologies to be translated into mobile applications. As a result, a marketplace of accessibility apps has become available, yet no framework exists to facilitate navigation of this voluminous space. MATERIALS AND METHODS We developed the BLV (Blind and Low Vision) App Arcade: a fun, engaging, and searchable curated repository of app AT broken down into 11 categories spanning a wide variety of themes from entertainment to navigation. Additionally, a standardized evaluation metric was formalized to assess each app in five key dimensions: reputability, privacy, data sharing, effectiveness, and ease of use/accessibility. In this paper, we describe the methodological approaches, considerations, and metrics used to find, store and score mobile applications. CONCLUSION The development of a comprehensive and standardized database of apps with a scoring rubric has the potential to increase access to reputable tools for the visually impaired community, especially for those in low- and middle-income demographics, who may have access to mobile devices but otherwise have limited access to more expensive technologies or services.

Abstract
We present a study with 20 participants with low vision who operated two types of screen magnification (lens and full) on a laptop computer to read two types of document (text and web page). Our purposes were to comparatively assess the two magnification modalities, and to obtain some insight into how people with low vision use the mouse to control the center of magnification. These observations may inform the design of systems for the automatic control of the center of magnification. Our results show that there were no significant differences in reading performances or in subjective preferences between the two magnification modes. However, when using the lens mode, our participants adopted more consistent and uniform mouse motion patterns, while longer and more frequent pauses and shorter overall path lengths were measured using the full mode. Analysis of the distribution of gaze points (as measured by a gaze tracker) using the full mode shows that, when reading a text document, most participants preferred to move the area of interest to a specific region of the screen.

Abstract
PURPOSE Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative condition impacting central vision. Evaluating the effectiveness of low vision devices provides empirical evidence on how devices can rehabilitate and overcome deficits caused by AMD. This evidence could help to facilitate discussion on necessary future improvements to vision enhancement technology. METHODS A systematic review of the literature was conducted on low vision device use in AMD populations. Relevant peer-reviewed research articles from six databases were screened. RESULTS The findings of thirty-five studies revealed a significant positive impact of low vision devices leading to improvements in visual acuity, reading performance, facial recognition, and more. While the studies were found to have moderate risks of bias, a GRADE assessment of the evidence suggested the certainty of the evidence was low-moderate. DISCUSSION Simple hand-held low vision devices (e.g., magnifiers) appear to currently have greater preferential support than newer visual enhancement technology (e.g., head mounted devices). Financial, comfort or usability reasons may influence preferences more than performance-based findings. However, there is a lack of studies examining newer technologies in AMD populations, which future research should address. Moreover, given the presence of bias across the studies and limited controlled experiments, confidence in the results may be low. CONCLUSIONS Most studies indicated that low vision devices have positive impacts on reading and visual performance. But, even though they are reported to be a valuable asset to AMD populations, more rigorous research is required to draw conclusive evidence. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONLow vision devices can improve patient outcomes (e.g., vision, reading ability) for age-related macular degeneration populations.A multidisciplinary combination of low vision devices and rehabilitative services (i.e., eccentric viewing training, counselling, education) may enhance quality of life.

Abstract
The pervasiveness of mobile devices and other associated technologies has affected all aspects of our daily lives. People with visual impairments are no exception, as they increasingly tend to rely on mobile apps for assistance with various visual tasks in daily life. Compared to dedicated visual aids, mobile apps offer advantages such as affordability, versatility, portability, and ubiquity. We have surveyed hundreds of mobile apps of potential interest to people with vision impairments, either released as special assistive apps claiming to help in tasks such as text or object recognition (n = 68), digital accessibility (n = 84), navigation (n = 44), and remote sighted service (n = 4), among others, or marketed as general camera magnification apps that can be used for visual assistance (n = 77). While assistive apps as a whole received positive feedback from visually impaired users, as reported in various studies, evaluations of the usability of every app were typically limited to user reviews, which are often not scientifically informative. Rigorous evaluation studies on the effect of vision assistance apps on daily task performance and quality of life are relatively rare. Moreover, evaluation criteria are difficult to establish, given the heterogeneity of the visual tasks and visual needs of the users. In addition to surveying literature on vision assistance apps, this review discusses the feasibility and necessity of conducting scientific research to understand visual needs and methods to evaluate real-world benefits.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Digital reading devices have become increasingly popular among people with low vision. Because displays come in many sizes ranging from smart watches to large desktop computer displays, it is important to have principles to guide people with low vision in selecting suitable displays for reading. PURPOSE The selection of effective digital displays for reading by people with low vision focuses attention on the interacting effects of print size, display size, font, visual acuity, and reading distance. This technical report aims to provide principles for identifying the minimum size of digital displays required for fluent reading by people with low vision. METHODS We emphasize two critical factors in selecting an appropriate reading display: angular print size, which should exceed the individual's critical print size, and display size, which should allow at least 13 characters to be presented on each line. Our approach considers a low-vision individual's acuity and preferences for viewing distance and fonts. RESULTS Through an illustrative example, we demonstrate how our approach can be used to determine display size for a low-vision individual with 20/200 acuity and central field loss who wants to read at 30-cm viewing distance with the Times Roman font. We have developed a web application based on our recommended approach to provide easy access to our algorithm. CONCLUSIONS We provide a procedure to guide the selection of appropriate displays for a wide range of acuities. Our approach can help clinicians in making recommendations for their patients, digital product designers in developing more accessible devices, and low-vision individuals in selecting digital displays for reading.

Abstract
Experiencing visual art can inspire, be an overall positive leisure activity, and has been linked to improved cognition, especially in older adults. Access to artwork in a museum environment can comprise a variety of barriers, including difficulties linked to its visual experience for persons that are visually impaired. The present study explored the barriers and facilitators experienced by 15 older adults (age 65 to 93) living with age-related macular degeneration when using an iPad to access ArtontheBrain™, a virtual art museum recreation experience created by members of this team. Using the Concurrent Think Aloud method, participants were asked to continuously comment on their experiences with the application while being audio/video recorded. Indeed, codes were determined by identifying frequently stated and emphasized ideas or behaviors of participants using the ArtontheBrain™ application. Transcripts underwent thematic analysis and indicated that the main access barriers were linked to control of the contrast, magnification, and the tactile interface on the tablet device. The learn and play activities as well as the text-to-speech feature were identified as facilitators for ArtontheBrain™ engagement. The present findings should also be considered in the larger context of application development, as this study provides insight pertaining to the needs of low vision individuals regarding usability and accessibility.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined how optimal colour/illumination conditions and the efficacy of the iPad, LuxIQ and Smart Bulb varied as a function of print size in younger, older and visually impaired adults. METHODS Participants with visual impairments and simulated low vision (SLV) read the MNRead using the iPad, LuxIQ and Smart Bulb. RESULTS In the impairment condition at 1.20 logMAR, the iPad (M = 9.49, 95% CI [3.18, 19.42]) and LuxIQ (M = 15.95, 95% CI [9.54, 24.86]) improved the reading speeds. At 0.80 logMAR (SLV), all devices improved reading speeds of older adults (iPad (M = 28.70, 95% CI [14.65, 42.51]); LuxIQ (M = 49.63, 95% CI [30.04, 69.68]); Smart Bulb (M = 23.11, 95% CI [3.33, 42.11])), but in younger adults only the LuxIQ (M = 13.04, 95% CI [3.21, 21.27]) did so. In the impairment condition, the iPad (M = 5.54, 95% CI [0.31, 12.13]) and LuxIQ (M = 13.90, 95% CI [7.88, 23.49]) improved reading speeds. In the SLV condition, age was a significant predictor of reading speed at 1.20 logMAR (F3,164 = 10.74, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.16). At 0.80 logMAR, age and luminance, but not colour, were significant predictors (F3,164 = 52.52, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.49). In the impairment condition, both age and lux were significant predictors of reading speed at 1.20 (F3,85 = 7.14, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.20) and 0.80 logMAR (F3,85 = 7.97, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.22), but colour was not. CONCLUSIONS Light source effectiveness and optimal colour/illumination vary as a function of print size. It appears that print size is the most important factor for improving reading speed. As print size decreases, luminance becomes crucial, and only at the smallest print sizes does the effect of colour become useful.

Abstract
Purpose: Investigating difficulties during activities of daily living is a fundamental first step for the development of vision-related intervention and rehabilitation strategies. One way to do this is through visual impairment simulations. The aim of this review is to synthesize and assess the types of simulation methods that have been used to simulate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in normally sighted participants, during activities of daily living (e.g., reading, cleaning, and cooking). Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in five databases and a critical analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various AMD simulation methods (following PRISMA guidelines). The review focuses on the suitability of each method for investigating activities of daily living, an assessment of clinical validation procedures, and an evaluation of the adaptation periods for participants. Results: Nineteen studies met the criteria for inclusion. Contact lenses, computer manipulations, gaze contingent displays, and simulation glasses were the main forms of AMD simulation identified. The use of validation and adaptation procedures were reported in approximately two-thirds and half of studies, respectively. Conclusions: Synthesis of the methodology demonstrated that the choice of simulation has been, and should continue to be, guided by the nature of the study. While simulations may never completely replicate vision loss experienced during AMD, consistency in simulation methodology is critical for generating realistic behavioral responses under vision impairment simulation and limiting the influence of confounding factors. Researchers could also come to a consensus regarding the length and form of adaptation by exploring what is an adequate amount of time and type of training required to acclimatize participants to vision impairment simulations.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE On average, older adults (60+) with normal vision read the International Reading Speed Texts (IReST) 37.8 words per minute slower than the standardized values provided by the IReST manufacturer. When assessing reading speed in older adults, clinicians should bear in mind that the IReST norms do not account for these age-related differences. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to validate the IReST in an English-speaking Canadian sample of older adults (60+). METHODS Canadian English-speaking older adults (n = 25) read all 10 IReST aloud using the same protocol from the original IReST validation study. RESULTS There were significant differences between the older adult sample and the published IReST values for each text (mean difference, -37.84; 95% confidence interval, -41.34 to -34.34). CONCLUSIONS Reading speeds of older (60+) Canadian adults fell outside of the standardized values of the English language IReST. Researchers/clinicians who wish to assess older adults' reading speed using the IReST ought to take this discrepancy into account.

Abstract
Purpose Mobile video magnifier apps are used by many visually impaired people for seeing details that are beyond their visual capacity. Understanding the common types of visual targets will be importantly informative for low-vision research and assistive technology development. This study addressed this question through analysis of images captured by magnifier app users pursuing their daily activities. Methods An iOS magnifier app, free to the public, was used to capture and upload images to the Azure Computer Vision cloud service for object recognition. Returned object tag results for each image were uploaded to the Umeng analytics server for aggregated tallies. Consolidated data from 24,295 users across 1 month were analyzed. More than 1300 types of object tags found in 152,819 images were grouped into 11 categories. The data collection and analyses were conducted separately for users who toggled on or off iOS vision-accessibility features. Results For accessibility and nonaccessibility user groups, 60% to 70% of objects were nontextual, such as an indoor scene, human, or art. More than 40% of the images contained more than one object category. Accessibility users viewed textual objects more frequently than nonaccessibility users (41.1% vs. 29.8%), but overall, the probability ranking of categories was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions Nontextual objects make up a major portion of visual needs of magnifier users across a wide range of vision loss. Translational Relevance Low-vision research and vision assistance technology development should address the need for nontextual object viewing.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE The prevalence of dry eye disease and low vision increases with age; they share risk factors and can be the result of underlying common causes. They are generally studied separately; however, combining these perspectives is relevant for research on assistive technology given that sustained focus affects the tear film because of decreased blinking rates. PURPOSE The objective of this study was to elucidate to which extent dry eye disease risk factors, signs, and symptoms are assessed in low vision patients who receive an eye examination as part of their vision rehabilitation services. METHODS Using a retrospective chart review, dry eye disease risk factors, signs, or symptoms were extracted from 201 randomly selected files that contained an eye examination in the past 5 years from two vision rehabilitation centers. RESULTS Demographic variables of charts from the two sites did not differ (mean visual acuity, 0.85 logMAR [standard deviation, 0.53; range, 0 to 2.3]; mean age, 71.2 years [standard deviation, 19 years; range, 24 to 101 years]). Fifty charts (25%) mentioned at least one dry eye disease symptom. Sixty-one charts (30.3%) reported systemic medications that can exacerbate dry eye disease, whereas 99 (49.2%) contained at least one systemic disease thought to contribute to dry eye disease symptoms; 145 (72.1%) mentioned at least one type of ocular surgery. Artificial tears were documented in 74 charts (36.8%). Few specific dry eye tests were performed, with the exception of corneal integrity assessment reported in 18 charts (8.95%). CONCLUSIONS Low vision patients have multiple risk factors for dry eye disease; however, dry eye disease tests were not frequently performed in comprehensive low vision eye examinations in this sample. More efforts should be made to assess dry eye disease to enhance comfort and functional vision, especially with the increasing demands of digital devices as visual aids.

Abstract
Individuals with dyslexia present with reading-related deficits including inaccurate and/or less fluent word recognition and poor decoding abilities. Slow reading speed and worse text comprehension can occur as secondary consequences of these deficits. Reports of visual symptoms such as atypical eye movements during reading gave rise to a search for these deficits' underlying mechanisms. This study sought to replicate established behavioral deficits in reading and cognitive processing speed while investigating their underlying mechanisms in more detail by developing a comprehensive profile of eye movements specific to reading in adult dyslexia. Using a validated standardized reading assessment, our findings confirm a reading speed deficit among adults with dyslexia. We observed different eye movements in readers with dyslexia across numerous eye movement metrics including the duration of a stop (i.e., fixation), the length of jumps (i.e., saccades), and the number of times a reader's eyes expressed a jump atypical for reading. We conclude that individuals with dyslexia visually sample written information in a laborious and more effortful manner that is fundamentally different from those without dyslexia. Our findings suggest a mix of aberrant cognitive linguistic and oculomotor processes being present in adults with dyslexia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related vision impairments and dementia both become more prevalent with increasing age. Research into the mechanisms of these conditions has proposed that some of their causes (eg, macular degeneration/glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease) could be symptoms of an underlying common cause. Research into sensory-cognitive aging has provided data that sensory decline may be linked to the progression of dementia through reduced sensory stimulation. While hearing loss rehabilitation may have a beneficial effect on cognitive functioning, there are no data available on whether low vision rehabilitation, specifically for reading, could have a beneficial effect on cognitive health. OBJECTIVE The research questions are: (1) Does low vision rehabilitation reduce reading effort? (2) If so, does reduced reading effort increase reading activity, and (3) If so, does increased reading activity improve cognitive functioning? The primary objective is to evaluate cognition before, as well as at 6 months and 12 months after, 3 weeks of low vision reading rehabilitation using magnification in individuals with age-related macular degeneration, with or without coexisting hearing impairments. We hypothesize that improvements postrehab will be observed at 6 months and maintained at 12 months for participants with vision loss and less so for those with dual sensory loss. The secondary objective is to correlate participant characteristics with all cognitive outcomes to identify which may play an important role in reading rehabilitation. METHODS We employ a quasiexperimental approach (nonrandomized, pre-post intervention study). A 3x3 design (3 groups x 3 time points) allows us to examine whether cognitive performance will change before and after 6 months and 12 months of a low vision reading intervention, when comparing 75 low vision and 75 dual sensory impaired (vision & hearing) participants to 75 age-matched healthy controls. The study includes outcome measures of vision (eg, reading acuity and speed), cognition (eg, short-term and long-term memory, processing speed), participant descriptors, demographics, and clinical data (eg, speech perception in noise, mental health). RESULTS The study has received approval, and recruitment began on April 24, 2019. As of March 4, 2021, 38 low vision and 7 control participants have been enrolled. Lockdown forced a pause in recruitment, which will recommence once the COVID-19 crisis has reached a point where face-to-face data collection with older adults becomes feasible again. CONCLUSIONS Evidence of protective effects caused by reading rehabilitation will have a considerable impact on the vision rehabilitation community and their clients as well as all professionals involved in the care of older adults with or without dementia. If we demonstrate that reading rehabilitation has a beneficial effect on cognition, the demand for rehabilitation services will increase, potentially preventing cognitive decline across groups of older adults at risk of developing macular degeneration. Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined the effectiveness of the LuxIQ, the Apple iPad and a smart bulb in assessing optimal colour and illumination to facilitate reading in younger, older and visually impaired adults. METHODS Participants read standardised texts at baseline (normal lighting/no device), then using the Apple iPad, LuxIQ and smart bulb, with their normal vision (20/20 condition) and using a simulated reduction in visual acuity/contrast sensitivity (20/80 condition). Visually impaired participants followed the same procedure used in the 20/80 condition. RESULTS There was a significant interaction between condition and device in younger, F(1.5, 43.51) = 30.41, p < 0.001, ω2 = 0.34 and older, F(1.5, 4.51) = 4.51, p = 0.03, ω2 = 0.05 adults with normal vision, and there was a significant effect of device, F(2, 58) = 5.95, p = 0.004, ω2 = 0.12 in visually impaired adults. In the 20/20 condition, age and colour predicted reading speed, F(3, 176) = 36.25, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.37, whereas age, lighting and colour predicted reading speed, F(3, 176) = 36.25, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.37 in the 20/80 condition. In the visual impairment condition, lighting, colour and impairment severity predicted reading speed, F(3, 85) = 10.10, p < 0.001, Adj. R2 = 0.24. CONCLUSIONS The clinical implications of this study are that reading speeds improve in individuals with low vision under improved lighting conditions, specifically, with higher levels of luminance and colour temperature. The effectiveness of the devices varied across groups; however, the LuxIQ was the only device to improve reading speeds from baseline in older adults with visual impairments.

Abstract
Introduction: In Taiwan, although many school-aged students with low vision struggle with poor handwriting, there is a lack of evidence-based educational practices for handwriting enhancement. Since the use of mobile technology has increased recently, iPads have been identified as an effective tool to deliver video-based instruction to individuals. In this study, iPads were used to deliver video modeling to provide instruction designed to enhance the handwriting accuracy among students with low vision. Methods: A multiple-baseline-across-participants-probe design was used in this study to assess the success of the intervention with three individuals with low vision who were 9, 12, and 14 years of age. Results: During the baseline phase, the accuracy for each of the participants was under 50%. After intervention, their handwriting accuracy increased. The participants were also able to maintain their performance during follow-up sessions. Moreover, the study demonstrated good social validity, since the stakeholders all indicated a high level of treatment acceptability for this intervention. Discussion: The outcome of this study demonstrates that iPads used with video modeling can lead to improved accuracy in handwriting for students with low vision. The findings also support video modeling as an effective strategy for teaching new skills and may be applied to students with different special learning needs. Implications for practitioners: Video modeling is an effective and feasible instructional strategy for practitioners as it can be easily implemented. Additionally, given its built-in visual support, the iPad is an effective instrument that can help students with low vision reach a higher potential for handwriting accuracy. It is worth noting that, in addition to the presence of video modeling, proper instruction, as well as opportunities to practice, is needed for students to produce accurate word formation. Thus, short daily practices combined with the intervention method presented in this study are likely to gain better results for students with low vision.

Abstract
Technology can enable efficient, effective, and independent performance of daily occupations and enhance social and leisure participation. This paper describes the findings of a qualitative study exploring iPad use during daily activities among adults with low vision. Five women who previously participated in a group iPad intervention participated in the study. Thematic analysis revealed 5 main themes: integration of the iPad into daily routine, benefits and barriers of the iPad, psychosocial factors, preferences regarding iPad use, and group instruction in individual iPad use. Group instruction may be a viable intervention option in low vision rehabilitation to improve occupational participation.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE The International Reading Speed Texts (IReST) is a valid measure of reading speed in a Canadian sample. However, if clinicians desire to assess reading comprehension using the IReST, this will significantly reduce reading speeds of individuals with normal vision or reduced visual acuity and therefore should use the values presented here. PURPOSE The purposes of this study are (1) to validate the IReST in an English-speaking Canadian sample and (2) to examine how reading comprehension questions and reduced visual acuity affect reading speed on the IReST. METHODS For study 1, Canadian English speakers (n = 25) read all 10 IReST following the procedures used in the original IReST validation. For study 2, Canadian English speakers (n = 50) read all 10 IReST, half with normal/corrected-to-normal vision and half with reduced visual acuity, and were asked reading comprehension questions. RESULTS No significant differences were found between Canadian sample and the published IReST values (in all cases, P > .05; mean difference [Mdiff] = -5.30 to +11.43; Cohen d = -0.15 to +0.27; Bayes factors = 0.41, 0.09). Assessing reading comprehension with multiple-choice questions on the IReST significantly reduced reading speeds in the normal vision condition (Mdiff = 25.3; 95% confidence interval, -16.7 to -34.1) and in the simulated impairment condition (Mdiff = 59.3; 95% confidence interval, -47.7 to -71). CONCLUSIONS The IReST is a valid measure that can be used to assess reading speed in a Canadian English-speaking sample. If researchers/clinicians wish to assess both reading speed and comprehension, using multiple-choice reading comprehension questions, then the values provided by the IReST will likely underestimate an individual's true reading speed in individuals with normal/corrected-to-normal vision or reduced visual acuity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to compare reading speeds (RS) of either paragraphs of text or single sentences in patients with maculopathy by investigating the repeatability of RS to decide which text type to use in studies on patients with maculopathy. METHODS RS was measured for standardized texts in 25 participants with a central scotoma due to maculopathy (mean age 77.8 years ± 9.9 SD, mean binocular visual acuity 0.65 logMAR (±0.85 SD), median magnification requirement 3-fold). Reading 3 single sentences taken from the Radner reading charts (sample #1, #2, and #3) of 14 words and reading 3 paragraphs of International Reading Speed Texts (IReST, sample # 3, #6, and #10) with a mean of 132 (±3.2 SD) words, each in German, were compared. The 6 texts were read aloud in random order from a closed-circuit TV system, with size adjusted according to the individual magnification requirement. Reading time was measured by stopwatch, and speed was calculated in correctly read words per minute (wpm). Differences in RS depending on text length (single sentence vs. paragraph) and text sample were calculated by the Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS The mean RS showed no significant difference between 2 charts of the same kind (sentences: 93 wpm ± 37 SD; paragraphs: 95 wpm ± 38 SD). RS differences between 2 charts were lower in paragraphs than in single sentences. Highest correlations of RS between all 6 texts existed between the 3 IReST text samples (r = 0.98, 0.98, and 0.98) compared with the 3 Radner sentences (r = 0.89, 0.81, and 0.90). The inter-chart reliability (coefficient of repeatability) was smaller for the paragraphs (12.9 wpm) than for the single sentences (36.4 wpm). CONCLUSION In patients with maculopathy, single sentences are well suited for single measurement of RS. For repeated measurements (e.g., monitoring the course of a reading disorder or assessing effects of interventions), paragraphs are preferable because of their lower variability of RS between the paragraphs.

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the use of software-generated corrections in neutralizing perceived distortions in age-related macular degeneration. Methods: A tablet-based application was utilized to elicit distortions. Five subjects (seven eyes: neovascular age-related macular degeneration and three eyes: non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration) traced the reference lines, and their distortion traces were recorded. To counter distortion, a software-generated trace was re-traced by subjects to produce a corrected trace. Final traces were superimposed on optical coherence tomography images and following distances calculated: (a) dDT: distance between distortion trace and reference line; (b) dGT: distance between software-generated trace and corrected trace; (c) dCT: distance between corrected trace and reference line. Mean percent improvement in distortion was reported. Mean effectiveness of correction was also reported by utilizing t test to compare dDT and dCT. The number of distortion traces with underlying lesions on optical coherence tomography was also analyzed. Results: Mean age of the subjects was 76.6 (±9.5) years. Each patient traced six reference lines and each was considered a separate case. Out of 30 cases, 17 (56.6%) elicited distortion. Mean percent improvement in distortion was 71.3 ± 23% (p < 0.05). Twelve cases (70.6%) had an underlying lesion (eight cases: disrupted photoreceptor layer and four cases: normal photoreceptor layer). Mean percent improvement in cases with normal photoreceptor layer (90.8 ± 5.45%) was higher than with abnormal photoreceptor layer (58.5 ± 7.17%) (p < 0.05). Five cases with distortion had no associated underlying lesion. Mean percent improvement in these subjects was significantly higher than those with photoreceptor layer disruption. Conclusion: Software-generated corrections can potentially correct for perceived distortions in patients with age-related macular degeneration, especially in cases with preserved photoreceptor layer.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Access to digital text is increasingly widespread, but its impact on low-vision reading is not well understood. PURPOSE We conducted an online survey of people with low vision to determine what assistive technologies they use for visual reading, their preferred text characteristics, and the time they devote to reading digital and hard-copy text. METHODS One hundred thirty-three low-vision participants completed an online survey. Participants reported the nature and history of their low vision, their usage of different assistive technologies, and time devoted to five visual reading activities. RESULTS The three largest diagnostic categories were albinism (n = 36), retinitis pigmentosa (n = 20), and glaucoma (n = 15). Mean self-reported acuity was 0.93 logMAR (range, 0.1 to 1.6 logMAR). Mean age was 46 years (range, 18 to 98 years). Participants reported on percentage time spent reading using vision, audio, or touch (braille). Seventy-five percent of our participants did more than 50% of their reading visually. Across five categories of reading activities-work or education, news, pleasure, spot reading, and social networking-participants reported more time spent on digital reading than hard-copy reading. Eighty-nine percent of our participants used at least one technology from each of our two major categories of assistive technologies (digital content magnifiers and hard-copy content magnifiers) for visual reading. CONCLUSIONS Despite the growing availability of digital text in audio or braille formats, our findings from an online sample of people with low vision indicate the continuing importance of visual reading. Our participants continue to use technology to access both hard-copy and digital text, but more time is devoted to digital reading. Our findings highlight the need for continued research and development of technology to enhance visual reading accessibility.

Abstract
Smartphones and tablets incorporate built-in accessibility features, but little is known about their impact within the visually impaired population. This study explored the use of smartphones and tablets, the degree to which they replace traditional visual aids, and factors influencing these decisions. Data were collected through an anonymous online survey targeted toward visually impaired participants above the age of 18, whom had been using a smartphone or tablet for at least three months. Among participants (n = 466), 87.4% felt that mainstream devices are replacing traditional solutions. This is especially true for object identification, navigation, requesting sighted help, listening to audiobooks, reading eBooks and optical character recognition. In these cases, at least two-thirds of respondents indicated that mainstream devices were replacing traditional tools most or all of the time. Users across all ages with higher self-reported proficiency were more likely to select a mainstream device over a traditional solution. Our results suggest that mainstream devices are frequently used amongst visually impaired adults in place of or in combination with traditional assistive aids for specific tasks; however, traditional devices are still preferable for certain tasks, including those requiring extensive typing or editing. This provides important context to designers and rehabilitation personnel in understanding the factors influencing device usage.

Abstract
Reading musical notation while interpreting it on a musical instrument poses problems for musicians with a visual impairment (VI). This study sought to describe the visual aids, adaptations and compensatory strategies used by five amateur pianists with low vision when reading music, to identify the problems they face when using these aids, and to verify whether a head-mounted display (HMD) such as eSight Eyewear can be used to overcome some of them. In this exploratory study, the participants read and interpreted two excerpts of musical notation using eSight Eyewear. The data, collected through interviews, were coded using a qualitative method and a phenomenological approach. The results suggest that musicians with a VI use various visual aids, adaptations and compensatory strategies. However, these approaches are not without significant problems, particularly when they involve magnification. On the other hand, eSight Eyewear allows users to adjust magnification, have their hands free and use adapted musical notation. Many magnification-related problems are overcome with this HMD, which can be used to simultaneously read and interpret standard musical notation. However, reading sheet music with such a device remains a complex task, given the need to control head movements accordingly.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE There are no data available comparing the iPad as a portable magnification device with a portable video magnifier. Our study supports the use and integration of mainstream tablet computers into vision rehabilitation to overcome potential barriers to device uptake due to the stigma attached to traditional devices. PURPOSE Portable personal tablet computers have taken on an important role as assistive devices for individuals with visual impairment; however, their use is rarely supported by independent data. Our study aims to contribute to evidence-based practice by comparing a tablet computer with a portable video magnifier in their use as spot-reading devices. METHODS We compared the Optelec Compact 5 HD portable video magnifier (Optelec, Longueuil, Canada) and the Apple iPad Air tablet computer (Apple Inc, Cupertino, CA) using the SuperVision+ Magnifier app by asking 60 adults with low vision (age range, 19 to 97 years; mean visual acuity, 20/136) to spot read information on a bill, a medication box, and a food label. Their ability to complete each task was timed; they completed the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with assistive Technology questionnaire and indicated their preferred device. RESULTS Performance speed indicated that easier tasks were completed faster; however, there were no statistically significant differences in performance between the two device conditions. The highest satisfaction scores for both devices were identical: dimensions, ease of use, and effectiveness. Preference between the two devices was split at 25 for iPad, 33 for the portable closed-circuit television, and 2 for undecided. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that performance speed on our spot-reading tasks was comparable across the two devices. In addition, subjective judgment of the device features and personal preferences lead us to conclude that both the iPad and the portable magnifier may have certain equivalence in their functionality, depending on the user and the task for which they are used.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Digital reading displays provide opportunities for enhancing accessibility of text for low vision. How are these displays used by people in their daily lives? PURPOSE Subjects responded to an online survey concerning their vision history, reading technology, display preferences, and reading habits. Here, we report on findings concerning acuity and magnification. METHODS The survey asked subjects to arrange a text passage for typical reading and to report viewing distance, screen dimensions, and the number of characters per line. Seventy-five adult subjects (most with early-onset low vision, few with central field loss) completed all survey questions relevant to the analysis of acuity and magnification. Mean acuity was .92 logMAR (range, 0.1 to 1.6), and mean age was 44.8 years (range, 18 to 71 years). Twelve normally sighted controls reported the same information while viewing the passage on cell phones, tablets, and computers. RESULTS The controls had a mean viewing distance of 38.7 cm and a mean x-height of 1.38 mm. For all three types of devices, angular x-height was 0.21° (close to laboratory estimates of the critical print size for reading). Low vision subjects showed decreasing viewing distance and increasing print size with larger values of logMAR acuity. Most of the low vision subjects achieved their desirable magnification by a combination of reduced viewing distance and increased physical letter size. The majority (54 of 75) relied more on letter-size magnification. Relative to the controls, regression analysis revealed that a typical low vision subject with logMAR acuity of 1.0 reduced viewing distance by a factor of 2.8 and enlarged physical print size by a factor of 6. CONCLUSIONS Our survey shows that people with a wide range of acuities are engaged in digital reading. Our subjects achieved desirable magnification primarily by enlarging physical character size and to a lesser extent by reducing viewing distance.

Abstract
Background: The decision process around the (non-)use of assistive technologies is multifactorial. Its determinants have previously been classified into personal, device-related, environmental and interventional categories. Whether these categories specifically apply to the use of magnifying low vision aids was explored here, using this classification.Methods: A scoping review (Embase, MedLine, Cochrane, ERIC ProQuest, CINAHL, NICE Evidence, Trip Database) was conducted to summarize the extent, range, and nature of research regarding the categories that are associated with low vision aid (non-)usage. A combination of key words and MeSH terms was used based upon the identified core concepts of the research question: low vision, assistive technology and adherence. Inter-rater reliability for the selection process was considered acceptable (kappa = 0.87). A combination of numerical and qualitative description of 21 studies was performed.Results: Studies report high variability rates of people possessing devices but not using them (range: 2.3-50%, M = 25%, SD = 14%). We were able to replicate the conceptual structure of the four categories that had previsouly been identified with other devices. Age, diagnosis and visual acuity demonstrated contradictory influence on optical low vision aid usage. Change in vision, appropriate environment, consistent training, patient's motivation and awareness of low vision services, emerged as contributor factors of use.Conclusion: This review provides evidence that clinicians should not rely on traditionally available clinical factors to predict device use behavior. Worsening vision and low motivation appear as predictors of device nonuse and should be considered from the clinician's point of view. Education about potential facilitating factors and promotion of innovative care are strongly encouraged.Implications for rehabilitationInvestigation of the factors predicting (non-)use of magnifying low vision aids is important. These findings can help clinicians to identify patients with a higher risk of non-use of low vision aids as well as provide evidence for interventions designed to improve use.Knowledge of low vision services and types of magnifying low vision aids available to patients appears as fundamental in the process of device use and needs to be supported by more educational programs.Psychological factors predicting (non-)use of low vision aids need to be considered in the choice of rehabilitation and follow-up strategies by a multidisciplinary team, focusing more on mechanisms of adaptation and patient's motivation.Training intensity should play a central role in the development of innovative intervention programs to reduce device abandonment.

Abstract
Due to the increasing age of the global population, rates of visual disability are increasing. Visual rehabilitation is an effective method for increasing quality of life among individuals with low vision or blindness due to unpreventable or untreatable causes. The goal of low vision rehabilitation is to produce people who are independent, have an economically viable profession or skill, and are able to enjoy their lives. The stages of modern low vision rehabilitation include the intake interview, assessment of residual visual functions, assessment of residual functional vision, interventions and recommendations, and vision rehabilitation therapies.

Abstract
Low vision has been defined by best-corrected visual acuity worse than 20/40 in the better eye, substantial visual field loss, or substantial loss of contrast sensitivity that cannot be corrected by refraction, medical treatment, or surgery. In the United States, low vision is most commonly caused by age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Most patients with low vision are elderly, although patients of all ages – including pediatric patients – may be affected. Low vision may decrease a patient’s quality of life substantially, leading to emotional distress and possibly depression. Low vision specialists aim to maximize the remaining vision of a patient by providing optical aids, orientation and mobility training, psychosocial support, and other methods of rehabilitation. Innovations in technology and devices offer additional options in low vision rehabilitation. Clinicians should consider referral to low vision specialists when a patient has difficulty with reading, mobility, driving, recognizing faces, or suffers from emotional distress due to low vision. Early referral may lead to improved outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of low-vision rehabilitation is to allow people to resume or to continue to perform daily living tasks, with reading being one of the most important. This is achieved by providing appropriate optical devices and special training in the use of residual-vision and low-vision aids, which range from simple optical magnifiers to high-magnification video magnifiers. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of different visual reading aids for adults with low vision. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Trials Register) (2017, Issue 12); MEDLINE Ovid; Embase Ovid; BIREME LILACS, OpenGrey, the ISRCTN registry; ClinicalTrials.gov and the World Health Organization (WHO) International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP). The date of the search was 17 January 2018. SELECTION CRITERIA This review includes randomised and quasi-randomised trials that compared any device or aid used for reading to another device or aid in people aged 16 or over with low vision as defined by the study investigators. We did not compare low-vision aids with no low-vision aid since it is obviously not possible to measure reading speed, our primary outcome, in people that cannot read ordinary print. We considered reading aids that maximise the person's visual reading capacity, for example by increasing image magnification (optical and electronic magnifiers), augmenting text contrast (coloured filters) or trying to optimise the viewing angle or gaze position (such as prisms). We have not included studies investigating reading aids that allow reading through hearing, such as talking books or screen readers, or through touch, such as Braille-based devices and we did not consider rehabilitation strategies or complex low-vision interventions. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We used standard methods expected by Cochrane. At least two authors independently assessed trial quality and extracted data. The primary outcome of the review was reading speed in words per minute. Secondary outcomes included reading duration and acuity, ease and frequency of use, quality of life and adverse outcomes. We graded the certainty of the evidence using GRADE. MAIN RESULTS We included 11 small studies with a cross-over design (435 people overall), one study with two parallel arms (37 participants) and one study with three parallel arms (243 participants). These studies took place in the USA (7 studies), the UK (5 studies) and Canada (1 study). Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was the most frequent cause of low vision, with 10 studies reporting 50% or more participants with the condition. Participants were aged 9 to 97 years in these studies, but most were older (the median average age across studies was 71 years). None of the studies were masked; otherwise we largely judged the studies to be at low risk of bias. All studies reported the primary outcome: results for reading speed. None of the studies measured or reported adverse outcomes.Reading speed may be higher with stand-mounted closed circuit television (CCTV) than with optical devices (stand or hand magnifiers) (low-certainty evidence, 2 studies, 92 participants). There was moderate-certainty evidence that reading duration was longer with the electronic devices and that they were easier to use. Similar results were seen for electronic devices with the camera mounted in a 'mouse'. Mixed results were seen for head-mounted devices with one study of 70 participants finding a mouse-based head-mounted device to be better than an optical device and another study of 20 participants finding optical devices better (low-certainty evidence). Low-certainty evidence from three studies (93 participants) suggested no important differences in reading speed, acuity or ease of use between stand-mounted and head-mounted electronic devices. Similarly, low-certainty evidence from one study of 100 participants suggested no important differences between a 9.7'' tablet computer and stand-mounted CCTV in reading speed, with imprecise estimates (other outcomes not reported).Low-certainty evidence showed little difference in reading speed in one study with 100 participants that added electronic portable devices to preferred optical devices. One parallel-arm study in 37 participants found low-certainty evidence of higher reading speed at one month if participants received a CCTV at the initial rehabilitation consultation instead of a standard low-vision aids prescription alone.A parallel-arm study including 243 participants with AMD found no important differences in reading speed, reading acuity and quality of life between prism spectacles and conventional spectacles. One study in 10 people with AMD found that reading speed with several overlay coloured filters was no better and possibly worse than with a clear filter (low-certainty evidence, other outcomes not reported). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS There is insufficient evidence supporting the use of a specific type of electronic or optical device for the most common profiles of low-vision aid users. However, there is some evidence that stand-mounted electronic devices may improve reading speeds compared with optical devices. There is less evidence to support the use of head-mounted or portable electronic devices; however, the technology of electronic devices may have improved since the studies included in this review took place, and modern portable electronic devices have desirable properties such as flexible use of magnification. There is no good evidence to support the use of filters or prism spectacles. Future research should focus on assessing sustained long-term use of each device and the effect of different training programmes on its use, combined with investigation of which patient characteristics predict performance with different devices, including some of the more costly electronic devices.
