Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the identification and results of susceptibility testing for fungal isolates from the cornea or contact lens care systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective epidemiological study, we searched the results of fungal cultures from cornea or contact lens systems referred for identification and susceptibility testing to the United Kingdom National Mycology Reference Laboratory between October 2016 and March 2022. For each fungal isolate, we recorded the genus and species of the fungus and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to six antifungal agents available to treat corneal infection (amphotericin, econazole, itraconazole, natamycin, posaconazole, and voriconazole). RESULTS There were 600 isolates from 585 patients, comprising 374 (62%) from corneal samples and 226 from contact lenses and care systems, of which 414 (69%) isolates were moulds (filamentous fungi) and 186 (31%) were yeasts. The most frequent moulds isolated were Fusarium spp (234 isolates, 39%) and Aspergillus spp (62, 10%). The most frequent yeasts isolated were Candida spp (112, 19%), predominantly Candida parapsilosis (65, 11%) and Candida albicans (33, 6%), with 35 isolates (6%) of Meyerozyma guilliermondii. In vitro susceptibility was greatest for natamycin (347 moulds tested, mode 4 mg/L, range 0.25-64 mg/L; 98 yeasts tested, mode 4 mg/L, range 0.5-32 mg/L), with susceptibility for 94% for moulds and 99% yeasts. Of the 16 isolates interpreted as highly resistant to natamycin (MIC ≥16 mg/L), 13 were Aspergillus flavus complex. CONCLUSIONS In vitro susceptibility supports the use of natamycin for the empiric treatment of fungal keratitis in the UK.

Abstract
Purpose: To characterize the efficiency of glabridin alone and in combination with clinical antifungals in Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis. Methods: The broth microdilution method was performed to investigate whether glabridin exerted an antifungal role on planktonic cells and immature and mature biofilm. Antifungal mechanism was evaluated by Sorbitol and Ergosterol Assays. The synergistic effect of glabridin and antifungals was assessed through the checkerboard microdilution method and time-killing test. Regarding anti-inflammatory role, inflammatory substances induced by A. fumigatus were assessed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blot, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Drug toxicity was assessed by Draize test in vivo. Macrophage phenotypes were examined by flow cytometry. Results: Regarding antifungal activity, glabridin destroyed fungal cell wall and membrane on planktonic cells and suppressed immature and mature biofilm formation. After combining with natamycin or amphotericin B, glabridin possessed a potent synergistic effect against A. fumigatus. Regarding anti-inflammatory aspects, Dectin-1, toll‑like receptor (TLR)-2 and TLR-4 expression of human corneal epithelial cells were significantly elevated after A. fumigatus challenge and reduced by glabridin. The elevated expression of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-alpha induced by A. fumigatus or corresponding agonists were reversed by glabridin, equivalent to the effect of corresponding inhibitors. Glabridin could also contribute to anti-inflammation by downregulating inflammatory mediator expression to suppress macrophage infiltration. Conclusions: Glabridin contributed to fungal clearance by destroying fungal cell wall and membrane, and disrupting biofilm. Combining glabridin with clinical antifungals was superior in reducing A. fumigatus growth. Glabridin exerted an anti-inflammatory effect by downregulating proinflammatory substance expression and inhibiting macrophage infiltration, which provide a potential agent and treatment strategies for fungal keratitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ring infiltrates usually accompany numerous infectious and sterile ocular disorders. Nevertheless, systemic conditions, drugs toxicity and contact lens wear may present with corneal ring infiltrate in substantial part. Considering its detrimental effect on vision, detailed knowledge on etiology, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and management should be considered essential for every ophthalmologist. METHODS The PUBMED database was searched for "corneal ring infiltrate" and "ring infiltrate" phrases, "sterile corneal infiltrate" and "corneal infiltrate". We analyzed articles written in English on risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical manifestation, morphological features, ancillary tests (anterior-segment optical coherence tomography, corneal scraping, in vivo confocal microscopy), differential diagnosis and management of corneal ring infiltrate. RESULTS Available literature depicts multifactorial origin of corneal ring infiltrate. Dual immunological pathophysiology, involving both antibodies-dependent and -independent complement activation, is underlined. Furthermore, we found that the worldwide most prevalent among non-infectious and infectious ring infiltrates are ring infiltrates related to contact-lens wear and bacterial keratitis respectively. Despite low incidence of Acanthamoeba keratitis, it manifests with corneal ring infiltrate with the highest proportion of the affected patients (one third). However, similar ring infiltrate might appear as a first sign of general diseases manifestation and require targeted treatment. Every corneal ring infiltrate with compromised epithelium should be scraped and treat as an infectious infiltrate until not proven otherwise. Of note, microbiological ulcer might also lead to immunological ring and therefore require anti-inflammatory treatment. CONCLUSION Corneal ring infiltrate might be triggered not only by ocular infectious and non-infectious factors, but also by systemic conditions. Clinical assessment is crucial for empirical diagnosis. Furthermore, treatment is targeted towards the underlying condition but should begin with anti-infectious regimen until not proven otherwise.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the demographic and microbiological profile involved in the causation of corneal ulcers in Eastern India during the COVID era. Method Patients presenting with corneal ulcers fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken as the case. The study duration was from January 2021 to December 2021. Socio-demographic details and information about risk factors were noted. A detailed corneal examination followed by corneal scraping was performed for microbiological evaluation. Results In 1 year, 99 infective corneal ulcer patients were evaluated. Farmers (24.2%) were found to be maximally affected by corneal ulcers. The peak in cases was recorded from October to December (38.4%). Ocular trauma was the commonest risk factor (42.4%). The majority (80.8%) of patients were already on some topical antimicrobials. 22.2% of samples showed fungal filaments on KOH mount; 54.5% of these cases turned out to be culture-positive. 17.56% of KOH-negative samples turned out to be culture-positive (fungal). Overall, the culture positivity rate was 28.28% out of which fungal isolates were 89.28% and bacterial isolates were 10.72%. Fusarium species were identified as the most common organism contributing 42.85%, followed by Aspergillus fumigatus (14.28%). 10.72% of cases were culture positive for Pseudomonas aeuroginosa. Conclusion Trauma with the organic matter was the predominant cause of fungal keratitis. In this study, fungal keratitis was found to be more common. Fusarium was the most common isolate.

Filamentous Fungal Keratitis in Greece: A 16-Year Nationwide Multicenter Survey. Mycopathologia 2022; 187:439-453. Abstract
In a multicenter, prospective study of filamentous fungal keratitis in Greece, predisposing factors, etiology, treatment practices, and outcome, were determined. Corneal scrapings were collected from patients with clinical suspicion of fungal keratitis, and demographic and clinical data were recorded. Fungal identification was based on morphology, molecular methods, and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass-spectrometry. A total of 35 cases were identified in a 16-year study period. Female to male ratio was 1:1.7 and median age 48 years. Corneal injury by plant material, and soft contact lens use were the main risk factors (42.8% and 31.4%, respectively). Trauma was the leading risk factor for men (68.1%), contact lens use (61.5%) for women. Fusarium species were isolated more frequently (n = 21, 61.8%). F. solani was mostly associated with trauma, F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum with soft contact lens use. Other fungi were: Purpureocillium lilacinum (14.7%), Alternaria (11.8%), Aspergillus (8.8%), and Phoma foliaceiphila, Beauveria bassiana and Curvularia spicifera, one case each. Amphotericin B and voriconazole MIC50s against Fusarium were 2 mg/L and 4 mg/L respectively. Antifungal therapy consisted mainly of voriconazole locally or both locally and systemically, alone or in combination with liposomal AmB. Cure/improvement rate with antifungal therapy alone was 52%, keratoplasty was required in 40% of cases, and enucleation in 8%. In conclusion, filamentous fungal keratitis in Greece is rare, but with considerable morbidity. Abstract
Purpose: To describe the clinical manifestations, causative organisms, treatment, and prognostic factors of fungal keratitis based on analysis of patients over the past 20 years. Methods: A total of 177 patients (177 eyes) with fungal keratitis, who were diagnosed by smears and cultures, were reviewed retrospectively. Sex, age, predisposing factors, causative organisms, clinical manifestations, treatment, and prognosis were evaluated. The patients were divided into three groups: only potassium hydroxide (KOH)-positive, only culture-positive, and KOH- and culture-positive. Logistic regression was performed to identify the factors associated with a poor clinical outcome. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.4 ± 11.3 years; 107 (60.5%) patients were men. The most common predisposing factor was ocular trauma (57.6%), especially by plants (29.4%). The most prevalent filamentous fungi were Fusarium species (31.6%, 49 isolates), and the most prevalent yeasts were Candida species (11.0%, 17 isolates). In cases of bacterial and fungal keratitis, filamentous fungus with Gram-positive bacterial infection (70.7%, 29/41) was the most common presentation. Visual improvement after treatment was common in the KOH-positive group (79.2%, 19/24), while visual deterioration after treatment was common in the culture-positive group (40.4%, 36/89). Previous ocular disease (odds ratio [OR]: 3.744, p = 0.010), hypopyon (OR: 2.941, p = 0.030), and surgical treatment (OR: 24.482, p < 0.001) were risk factors for a poor clinical outcome in the multivariate logistic regression model. Conclusions: Clinical prognosis was good in the KOH-positive only group, but poor in the culture-positive group. If fungal keratitis is suspected, diagnostic KOH staining and culture tests should be performed initially. Early intensive antifungal medical treatments are necessary for patients with risk factors for poor clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose: The current study evaluates the epidemiological characteristics, risk factors, and microbiological diagnosis of fungal keratitis among patients living in the Egyptian Delta.Methods: This is a prospective hospital-based study that included patients who were clinically diagnosed and confirmed by culture test to have fungal keratitis. Patients were examined at baseline and risk factors were identified and collected. Patients were followed over 6 months and the outcomes were documented.Results: A total of 171 (67%) of 252 microbial keratitis patients was proved fungal by microbial culture test. Rural residence and agricultural activity were reported in 139 (81.3%) and 85 (49.7%) patients, respectively. Patients presented within 1 week from the start of symptoms were 120 (70.2%). A total of 54 (31.6%) patients reported ocular trauma. Forty patients (23.4%) had prior ocular surgery and 43 (25.1%) patients had a history of previous ocular disorders. Aspergillus species was the most common organism found in 120 (70.17%) patients, followed by Dematiceous fungi that were found in 25 (14.6%) patients. The main outcome was corneal opacity in 132 (77.2%) patients following medical treatment.Conclusion: Filamentary fungal predominance in Mansoura is influenced by the rural residence of its population. Therefore, more efforts in spreading awareness about microbial keratitis among villagers are important to reduce blindness caused by corneal opacity in rural areas.

Abstract
We present a case of Kluyveromyces marxianus keratitis nine months after Descement's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in a patient with Fuchs endothelial disease. Endothelial scraping revealed this rare yeast infection at the interface between graft and host cornea. Immediate antifungal treatment with intracameral and corneal intrastromal injections of voriconazole and amphotericin B remained unsuccessful, requiring penetrating keratoplasty. This case highlights the challenging management of keratomycosis in patients with endothelial grafts.

Abstract
The purpose of our research was the development of Amphotericin B-loaded in situ gelling nanofibers for the treatment of keratomycosis. Different formulation strategies were applied to increase the drug load of the sparingly water-soluble Amphotericin B in electrospun Gellan Gum/Pullulan fibers. These include bile salt addition, encapsulation in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles and formation of a polymeric Amphotericin B polyelectrolyte complex. The Amphotericin B polyelectrolyte complex (AmpB-Eu L) performed best and was very effective against the fungal strain Issatchenkia orientalis in vitro. The complex was characterized in detail by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. A heat induced stress test was carried out to ensure the stability of the polyelectrolyte complex. To gain information about the cellular tolerance of the developed polyelectrolyte complex a new, innovative multilayered-stratified human cornea cell model was used for determination of the cellular toxicity in vitro. For a safe therapy, the applied ophthalmic drug delivery system has to be sterile. Sterilization by electron irradiation caused not degradation of pure Amphotericin B and also for the bile salt complex. Furthermore, the developed Amphotericin B polyelectrolyte complex was not degraded by the irradiation process. In conclusion, a new polyelectrolyte Amphotericin B complex has been found which retains the antifungal activity of the drug with sufficient stability against irradiation-sterilization induced drug degradation. Furthermore, in comparison with the conventional used eye drop formulation, the new AmpB-complex loaded nanofibers were less toxic to cornea cells in vitro. Electrospinning of the Amphotericin B polyelectrolyte complex with Gellan Gum/ Pullulan leads to the formation of nanofibers with in situ gelling properties, which is a new and promising option for the treatment of keratomycosis.

Abstract
Objectives: To identify the clinical profile, etiology, and outcome of culture-positive mycotic keratitis in a tertiary referral centre in the northeastern part of Malaysia. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of all patients with culture-positive mycotic keratitis in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia over a 3-year period, from January 2015 to December 2017. Results: This study included 27 eyes of 27 patients treated for mycotic keratitis based on a positive fungal culture. The most common predisposing factor was ocular trauma, in 22 patients (81.5%). Eleven patients (40.7%) had a presenting visual acuity worse than 6/60, due to central ulcer involvement. Approximately half of these (6 patients) experienced visual improvement post-treatment. Fusarium spp. was the most common fungus isolated (37%), followed by non-sporulating fungi and Curvularia spp. Three patients (7.4%) had corneal microperforations, which healed after gluing and bandage contact lens application. One patient (3.7%) required tectonic penetrating keratoplasty and 1 patient (3.7%) underwent evisceration. The final visual acuity was 6/18 or better in approximately half (14 patients) of our cohort and worse than 3/60 in approximately 20% (5 patients). Conclusion: Mycotic keratitis occurred mainly in males and secondary to ocular trauma. The most common organism isolated was Fusarium spp. Although treatment may improve vision, the visual outcome is guarded.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the microbiological profile, risk factors, treatment and surgical intervention rates of fungal keratitis at a tertiary referral centre. Methods A retrospective review of microbiological and medical records from hospitalised patients treated for fungal keratitis at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João from 2009 to 2019 was conducted. Results Overall, 43 patients were included in our study. The mean age of patients was 63.7 years and 46.5% were men. In culture were isolated 22 (51.2%) filamentous fungi and 21 (48.8%) yeast. Candida species (n = 20, 46.5%), Fusarium species (n = 10, 23.4%) and Aspergillus species (n = 4, 9.3%) were the most common isolated species. Important risk factors were contact lens use (n = 24, 55.8%), long-term users of topical corticosteroids (n = 19, 44.2%) and previous keratitis (n = 19, 44.2%). Yeast isolates had a statistically significant higher prevalence in long-term users of topical corticosteroids compared to filamentous ones (p = 0.043). Twenty-four cases (55.8%) required surgical intervention, of which 23 cases underwent therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty. Ocular complications, such as evisceration was noted in 12 patients (27.9%) and endophthalmitis in 5 (11.6%). No statistically significant changes of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were found after treatment (p = 0.687). Conclusion Most patients with fungal keratitis have associated risk factors. Filamentous and yeast species have equally prevalent etiologies. In general, our results mirror how difficult and challenging the approach and treatment of fungal keratitis could be.

Abstract
Infectious keratitis in most cases is caused by bacterial, viral or fungal agents, but their structure is changing. Some researchers have noted a substantial increase in fungal corneal lesions in recent decades, but important local etiological therapy remains unavailable in developing countries. While bacterial keratitis and ophthalmoherpes are controlled by widely available local etiotropic therapy, treatment of keratomycosis in the Russian Federation is carried out with off-label medicine. Lack of skills and availability of diagnostic methods and official etiotropic therapy creates unequal conditions for ophthalmology specialists in the fight against ophthalmomycosis. In part, this causes a reduced level of «myco-caution», which leads to long-term ineffective treatment using antibacterial drops, lasting suffering of patients, and results in the loss of the eye functionally and - in some cases - anatomically. Therefore, the study of fungal keratitis remains relevant. The article provides an overview of research data on current epidemiology in different regions of the world, analyzes available antifungal drugs and the prospects for development of affordable and effective treatment of fungal keratitis.

Abstract
Purpose To analyze the epidemiological pattern, demographics, risk factors, and treatment outcomes of filamentous fungal keratitis at a tertiary hospital in Taiwan. Methods We recruited 65 patients (65 eyes) with culture-proven filamentous fungal keratitis who received diagnosis and treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between 2015 and 2018. All isolates were examined through conventional morphological identification and subjected to molecular identification with internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Data on patient demographics, predisposing factors, and treatment outcomes were collected. Results In total, filamentous fungi belonged to 16 genera were identified. Fusarium spp. (29 cases [44.6%]) was the most commonly isolated organism overall, followed by Colletotrichum spp. and Purpureocillium linacinum (seven cases [10.8% for each]), and Aspergillus spp. (six cases [9.2%]). Some fungi that have not been regarded as human pathogens were also identified, such as Paracremonium and Phellinum. Among 52 (80%) patients with predisposing factors, 30 (46.2%) had trauma. The ulcers of 33 (50.8%) patients resolved with medical treatment only. Additionally, six patients (9.2%) had corneal perforation, and nine patients (13.9%) required therapeutic/destructive surgical interventions including therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty (seven patients) or evisceration (two patients). Only 16 patients (24.6%) had final visual acuity of 20/40 or better. Conclusions Through molecular diagnosis, a high diversity of fungal pathogens was revealed along with an increasing incidence of Colletotrichumspp. and Purpureocilliumspp. in Taiwan. The most common risk factor for filamentous fungal keratitis was trauma. The visual outcomes were guarded. Translational Relevance The molecular diagnosis provides insight into accurate identification, which affects the epidemiology and diversity of pathogens of filamentous fungal keratitis.

Abstract
Purpose Only recently Tintelnotia was described as a new genus in the Phaeosphaeriaceae family of fungi containing two species, T. opuntiae and T. destructans. Until now, T. destructans keratitis was associated with contact lens wear and ocular trauma. We present the first case of T. destructans keratomycosis presenting as a superinfection in herpetic keratitis. Observations We present a case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with a unilateral keratitis since 3 weeks without history of trauma or contact lens wear, not responding to topical ofloxacin. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) of the corneal ulcer was positive for Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1). Signs and symptoms progressively improved after starting topical and systemic antiviral therapy. Six weeks later however, our patient presented with a new white infiltrate in the previous herpetic epithelial defect. In vivo confocal microscopy showed fungal hyphae and culture from corneal scrapings identified a hyphomycete. Intensive antimycotic therapy could not prevent a corneal perforation 1 week later. Penetrating keratoplasty was performed with intracameral injection of amphotericin B. Culture of the corneal button and PCR and sequence analysis on the fungal isolate confirmed the diagnosis of T. destructans keratomycosis. Six months after penetrating keratoplasty, biomicroscopy showed a clear graft without recurrence of fungal activity. Conclusions and importance T. destructans is an emerging opportunistic pathogen causing severe keratomycosis. Despite intensive antimycotic therapy, rapid progression to corneal perforation can be seen. Early diagnosis using confocal microscopy, fungal culture and PCR can allow prompt initiation of treatment, which should be guided by in vitro susceptibility testing.

Abstract
Fungal keratitis (FK) is one of the most severe corneal infectious diseases. FK often leads to poor visual prognosis and thus requires accurate diagnosis. Conventional approaches, including clinical diagnoses, smears, and cultures, often fail to provide reliable diagnostic value. Omics approaches, such as those using genomic, metagenomic, and tear proteomic data sources, provide promising features for improving the diagnosis and monitoring the progression of FK. Genomic approaches are based mainly on detecting amplicons of ribosomal RNA genes, and internal transcribed spacers are gradually gaining popularity in clinical practices. A metagenomic approach based on 16S rRNA genes may help monitor the dynamic change of conjunctival microbiota associated with an FK event, whereas that based on shot-gun and 18S rRNA target enrichment sequencing could have the potential to diagnose FK using clinical samples. A tear proteomic approach may provide comprehensive information about ocular surface defense and injury during FK. Representative up- and down-regulated proteins during FK could also be used as biomarkers to determine the clinical course and develop a treatment strategy in different stages of FK. Consequently, a personalized tear proteomic approach will soon play a key role in FK management.

Abstract
To investigate the expression of AFB1 gene in isolates obtained from corneal scrapping samples from keratitis patients and to correlate the quantity of AFB1 to the severity of keratitis. An observational study was undertaken in Medical Microbiology and Immunology department, Mansoura University, Egypt, over corneal scrapping samples that were cultured aiming to isolate fungal causes of infective keratitis followed by AFB1 gene detection in Aspergillus flavus isolates by nested PCR then quantitation of the toxin by TLC. Out of 843 corneal scrapping samples collected from patients with infective keratitis, positive fungal growth was identified in 277 cases (32.9%). A. flavus was the commonest fungal agent isolated in 93 cases (33.6%). The AFB1 toxin-encoding gene was detected in 63.4% of A. flavus isolates. There was a positive correlation between the quantity of produced AFB1 toxin and the degree of severity of keratitis (P value < 0.0001*). Aspergillus flavus was the most common cause of fungal keratitis, with the AFB1 toxin-encoding gene detected in more than half of the isolates. A significant correlation between the degree of severity of keratitis and the quantity of produced AFB1 toxin was detected. Therefore, exploring presence or absence of AFB1 toxin is important for the clinicians in their diagnostic assessment and selection of proper treatment choices.

Abstract
PURPOSE Microbial keratitis (MK) is a major cause of corneal blindness worldwide. Variations in season and temperature can affect MK incidence due to specific causative organisms; however, few studies have examined these factors in the UK. METHODS Retrospective review of all corneal scrapes from patients with MK presenting to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK, between January 2004 and December 2015. Manchester's monthly temperature data were obtained from Met Office UK. Analysis was performed using logistic regression. RESULTS From 4229 corneal scrapes, 1539 organisms grew (90.6% bacteria, 7.1% fungi, and 2.3% Acanthamoebae sp.). Gram-positive bacteria grew with increasing temperature [odds ratio (OR) 1.62, 95% CI: 1.11-2.39, P = 0.014], and fungi grew with decreasing temperature (OR 0.29, 95% CI: 0.16-0.51, P < 0.001). Moraxella sp. grew with decreasing temperature (OR 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86-0.96, P = 0.001). Compared with winter, overall culture positivity was significantly less likely in summer (OR 0.57, 95% CI: 0.38-0.87, P = 0.008) and spring (OR 0.65, 95% CI: 0.43-0.99, P = 0.045). Gram-negative bacteria were more likely in summer (OR 1.48, 95% CI: 1.06-2.09, P = 0.022) and autumn (OR 1.75, 95% CI: 1.24-2.47, P = 0.001). Candida sp. were less likely in summer (OR 0.25, 95% CI: 0.07-0.82, P = 0.027) and autumn (OR 0.18, 95% CI: 0.05-0.62, P = 0.009), and Acanthamoeba sp. were less likely in summer (OR 0.39, 95% CI: 0.15-0.92, P = 0.037) and spring (OR 0.26, 95% CI: 0.08-0.69, P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS Herein we report variation in the incidence of MK-causing organisms by season and temperature; this finding may aid clinicians in predicting possible causative organisms for MK at differing times of the year.

Abstract
Fungal diseases kill more than 1.5 million and affect over a billion people. However, they are still a neglected topic by public health authorities even though most deaths from fungal diseases are avoidable. Serious fungal infections occur as a consequence of other health problems including asthma, AIDS, cancer, organ transplantation and corticosteroid therapies. Early accurate diagnosis allows prompt antifungal therapy; however this is often delayed or unavailable leading to death, serious chronic illness or blindness. Recent global estimates have found 3,000,000 cases of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, ~223,100 cases of cryptococcal meningitis complicating HIV/AIDS, ~700,000 cases of invasive candidiasis, ~500,000 cases of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, ~250,000 cases of invasive aspergillosis, ~100,000 cases of disseminated histoplasmosis, over 10,000,000 cases of fungal asthma and ~1,000,000 cases of fungal keratitis occur annually. Since 2013, the Leading International Fungal Education (LIFE) portal has facilitated the estimation of the burden of serious fungal infections country by country for over 5.7 billion people (>80% of the world's population). These studies have shown differences in the global burden between countries, within regions of the same country and between at risk populations. Here we interrogate the accuracy of these fungal infection burden estimates in the 43 published papers within the LIFE initiative.
