Extremely durable biofouling-resistant metallic surfaces based on electrodeposited nanoporous tungstite films on steel

Green synthesis of a superhydrophobic porous organic polymer for the removal of volatile organic compounds at high humidity

Superhydrophobic porous organic polymers are potential sorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution control by suppressing the competition of water molecules on their surfaces. However, the synthesis of superhydrophobic reagents usually requires large amounts of organic solvents and a long reaction time (≥ 24 h). Herein, a green mechanochemical method was developed to synthesize a superhydrophobic polymer (MSHMP-1) with the advantages of using a small amount of organic solvents (5 mL/g) and a short reaction time (2 h). Meanwhile, MSHMP-1 with a water contact angle (WCA) of 162° exhibited a dramatically rich pore structure as revealed by its specific surface area (SSA) of 1780 m2/g. The decrease in the adsorption of benzene on MSHMP-1 due to the competition of water molecules, even at relative humidity of 90 %, was nonsignificant (<10 %), indicating the great application potential of MSHMP-1 in hydrophobic adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of MSHMP-1 was maintained after at least five adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, MSHMP-1 can be a remarkable adsorbent for the removal of hazardous VOCs, especially at high humidity levels.

Angstrom-Scale 2D Channels Designed For Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Confronting the impending exhaustion of traditional energy, it is urgent to devise and deploy sustainable clean energy alternatives. Osmotic energy contained in the salinity gradient of the sea-river interface is an innovative, abundant, clean, and renewable osmotic energy that has garnered considerable attention in recent years. Inspired by the impressively intelligent ion channels in nature, the developed angstrom-scale 2D channels with simple fabrication process, outstanding design flexibility, and substantial charge density exhibit excellent energy conversion performance, opening up a new era for osmotic energy harvesting. However, this attractive research field remains fraught with numerous challenges, particularly due to the complexities associated with the regulation at angstrom scale. In this review, the latest advancements in the design of angstrom-scale 2D channels are primarily outlined for harvesting osmotic energy. Drawing upon the analytical framework of osmotic power generation mechanisms and the insights gleaned from the biomimetic intelligent devices, the design strategies are highlighted for high-performance angstrom channels in terms of structure, functionalization, and application, with a particular emphasis on ion selectivity and ion transport resistance. Finally, current challenges and future prospects are discussed to anticipate the emergence of more anomalous properties and disruptive technologies that can promote large-scale power generation.

Recent advancement and trends in the development of membranes having bactericidal attributes via direct ink writing

The necessity for orthopedic prostheses, implants, and membranes to treat diseases, trauma, and other disasters has increased as the risk of survive through various factors has intensified exponentially. Considering exponential growth in demand, it has been observed that the traditional technology of grafts and membranes lags to fulfill the demand and effectiveness simultaneously. These challenges in traditional methodologies prompted a revolutionary shift in the biomedical industry when additive manufacturing (AM) emerged as an alternative fabrication technique for medical equipments such as prostheses, implants, and membranes. However these techniques were fast and precise the major attributes of the biomedical materials were the processability, bactericidal nature, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity together with good mechanical properties. Major challenges faced by researchers in the present-day scenario regarding materials are the lack of bactericidal attributes in tailored material, though having better mechanical as well as biocompatible properties, which, on the other hand, are primary critical factors too, in the healthcare sector. Hence considering the advantages of AM and need for membranes with bacteriacidal attributes this present review will highlight the studies based on the manufacturing of membranes with bacteria-resistant properties majorly using direct ink writing and some AM techniques and the reasoning behind the antibacterial attributes of those composite materials.

NIR-Driven Self-Healing Phase-Change Solid Slippery Surface with Stability and Promising Antifouling and Anticorrosion Properties

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have great potential to replace traditional antifouling coatings due to their efficient, green, and broad-spectrum antifouling performance. However, the lubricant dissipation problem of SLIPS severely restricts its further development and application, and the robust SLIPS continues to be extremely challenging. Here, a composite phase-change lubricant layer consisting of paraffin, silicone oil, and MXene is designed to readily construct a stable and NIR-responsive self-healing phase-change solid slippery surface (PCSSS). Collective results showed that PCSSS could rapidly achieve phase-change transformation and complete self-healing under NIR irradiation and keep stable after high-speed water flushing, centrifugation, and ultrasonic treatment. The antifouling performance of PCSSS evaluated by protein, bacteria, and algae antiadhesion tests demonstrated the adhesion inhibition rate was as high as 99.99%. Moreover, the EIS and potentiodynamic polarization experiments indicated that PCSSS had stable and exceptional corrosion resistance (|Z|0.01Hz = 3.87 × 108 Ω·cm2) and could effectively inhibit microbiologically influenced corrosion. The 90 day actual marine test reveals that PCSSS has remarkable antifouling performance. Therefore, PCSSS presents a novel, facile, and effective strategy to construct a slippery surface with the prospect of facilitating its application in marine antifouling and corrosion protection.

Superdurable Full-Life Superhydrophobic Composite Block

Superhydrophobic materials are attractive for industrial development but plagued by poor mechanical stability. Herein, a superdurable full-life superhydrophobic composite block is designed and fabricated by embedding near-zero contractive superhydrophobic silica aerogel into a rigid iron-nickel foam structured similarly to a regular dodecahedron. The synergistic protection afforded by these materials ensures superrobust mechanical stability for the composite block, which features a high compressive strength of up to ≈7.4 MPa, and ultralow Taber abrasion of down to ≈0.567 mm after withstanding 50 000 cycles, and highly efficient water harvesting capability of up to ≈3114.3 mg min-1 cm-2 at a supercooling degree of 40 K. This robust material system provides a novel strategy to design superhydrophobic materials capable of withstanding extreme conditions, including high temperature, humidity, pressure, and abrasion.

Recent Developments in Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surface Coatings for Biomedical Applications

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS), inspired by the Nepenthes pitcher plant, exhibits excellent performances as it has a smooth surface and extremely low contact angle hysteresis. Biomimetic SLIPS attracts considerable attention from the researchers for different applications in self-cleaning, anti-icing, anticorrosion, antibacteria, antithrombotic, and other fields. Hence, SLIPS has shown promise for applications across both the biomedical and industrial fields. However, the manufacturing of SLIPS with strong bonding ability to different substrates and powerful liquid locking performance remains highly challenging. In this review, a comprehensive overview of research on SLIPS for medical applications is conducted, and the design parameters and common fabrication methods of such surfaces are summarized. The discussion extends to the mechanisms of interaction between microbes, cells, proteins, and the liquid layer, highlighting the typical antifouling applications of SLIPS. Furthermore, it identifies the potential of utilizing the controllable factors provided by SLIPS to develop innovative materials and devices aimed at enhancing human health.

Bioinspired Zwitterionic Nanowires with Simultaneous Biofouling Reduction and Release

Marine biofouling is a complex and dynamic process that significantly increases the carbon emissions from the maritime industry by increasing drag losses. However, there are no existing non-toxic marine paints that can achieve both effective fouling reduction and efficient fouling release. Inspired by antifouling strategies in nature, herein, a superoleophobic zwitterionic nanowire coating with a nanostructured hydration layer is introduced, which exhibits simultaneous fouling reduction and release performance. The zwitterionic nanowires demonstrate >25% improvement in fouling reduction compared to state-of-the-art antifouling nanostructures, and four times higher fouling-release compared to conventional zwitterionic coatings. Fouling release is successfully achieved under a wall shear force that is four orders of magnitude lower than regular water jet cleaning. The mechanism of this simultaneous fouling reduction and release behavior is explored, and it is found that a combination of 1) a mechanical biocidal effect from the nanowire geometry, and 2) low interfacial adhesion resulting from the nanostructured hydration layer, are the major contributing factors. These findings provide insights into the design of nanostructured coatings with simultaneous fouling reduction and release. The newly established synthesis procedure for the zwitterionic nanowires opens new pathways for implementation as antifouling coatings in the maritime industry and biomedical devices.

Underwater Bionic Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Coating with the Synergetic Effect Of Hydrogen Bonds and Self-Formed Bubbles

The self-healing ability of superhydrophobic surfaces in air has attracted tremendous additions in recent years. Once the superhydrophobic surface is damaged underwater, water seeps into gaps among micro/nano structures. The air film diffuses into water and eventually disappears during immersion without actively replenishing the gas, which results in the impossible of self-healing. Here, an underwater self-healing superhydrophobic coating with the synergetic effect of hydrogen bonds and self-formed bubbles via the spraying method is fabricated. The movement of hydrogen bonds of the prepared polyurethane enables microstructures to reconstruct at room temperature and self-formed bubbles of effervescent materials underwater actively replenish gas before microstructures completely self-healing, achieving the self-healing property of the superhydrophobic coating. Moreover, the hydrophilic effervescent material is sprayed along with unmodified micron-scaled particles because modified nano-scale particles are key factors for the realization of superhydrophobic coating. An underwater stable superhydrophobic surface with pressure resistance (4.9 kPa) is demonstrated. This superhydrophobic coating also shows excellent drag reduction, anti-icing, and anti-corrosion properties. This facile and scalable method offers a new route that an underwater self-healing superhydrophobic coating executes the gas film recovery.

Preparation and Anti-Icing Properties of Zirconia Superhydrophobic Coating

Zirconia (ZrO2) is a ceramic material with high-temperature resistance and good insulating properties. Herein, for the first time, the surface of ZrO2 was modified with docosanoic acid (DCA) to improve its self-cleaning and hydrophobic properties. This surface modification transformed the surface of ZrO2 from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic. A two-step spraying method was used to prepare the superhydrophobic surface of ZrO2 by sequentially applying a primer and a topcoat. The primer was a solution configured using an epoxy resin as the adhesive and polyamide as the curing agent, while the topcoat was a modified ZrO2 solution. The superhydrophobic surface of ZrO2 exhibited a contact angle of 154° and a sliding angle of 4°. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and other analytical techniques were used to characterize the prepared zirconia particles and their surfaces. Moreover, results from surface self-cleaning and droplet freezing tests showed that DCA-modified ZrO2 can be well combined, and its coatings show good self-cleaning and anti-icing properties on TA2 bases.

Factors influencing initial bacterial adhesion to antifouling surfaces studied by single-cell force spectroscopy

Biofilm formation, a major concern for healthcare systems, is initiated when bacteria adhere to surfaces. Escherichia coli adhesion is mediated by appendages, including type-1 fimbriae and curli amyloid fibers. Antifouling surfaces prevent the adhesion of bacteria to combat biofilm formation. Here, we used single-cell force-spectroscopy to study the interaction between E. coli and glass or two antifouling surfaces: the tripeptide DOPA-Phe(4F)-Phe(4F)-OMe and poly(ethylene glycol) polymer-brush. Our results indicate that both antifoulants significantly deter E. coli initial adhesion. By using two mutant strains expressing no type-1 fimbriae or curli amyloids, we studied the adhesion mechanism. Our results suggest that the bacteria adhere to different antifoulants via separate mechanisms. Finally, we show that some bacteria adhere much better than others, illustrating how the variability of bacterial cultures affects biofilm formation. Our results emphasize how additional study at the single-cell level can enhance our understanding of bacterial adhesion, thus leading to novel antifouling technologies.

Analysis of freezing of a sessile water droplet on surfaces over a range of wettability

HYPOTHESIS

Nonwetting surfaces, by virtue of their water-repelling trait, offer desirable anti-icing characteristics. Surface roughness, type and wettability are important interfacial characteristics that affect the icing dynamics that can be tailored to achieve desired anti-icing designs.

EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS

The present study systematically explores the effect of surface roughness on the freezing behaviour of water droplets on surfaces ranging in their wettability. Surfaces with tailored textures and wettability were fabricated using chemical etching and electrodeposition by varying the voltage. The surfaces studied include bare copper, five different dry nonwetting copper surfaces, and five different lubricant-infused copper surfaces that ranged in surface texture fractal dimension from nearly 1.0 to 1.92 and wettability measures of average water contact angle from 91° to 162° and sliding angle from less than 3° to greater than 50°. A computational model is developed to simulate the freezing dynamics on the surfaces studied.

FINDINGS

With increasing roughness features, the freezing time increased due to the dual effects of increased contact angle and poor interfacial conductance caused by trapped air or infused liquid within the asperity textures. In general, the nonwetting surfaces increased the freezing time by a factor of at least 1.33 and up to about 3.2 compared to freezing on bare copper surfaces. The computational model shows close agreement with experimental measurements on the freeze front progression as well as freeze time. Design guidelines on the suitability of the different nonwetting surfaces for anti-icing purposes are derived from the systematic study, with the overall design recommendation favoring lubricant infused surfaces.

Sustainable Janus lignin-based polyurethane biofoams with robust antibacterial activity and long-term biofilm resistance

Conventional antibiotic therapies have been becoming less efficient due to increasingly, and sometimes fully, antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, sometimes known as "superbacteria" or "superbugs." Thus, novel antibacterial materials to effectively inhibit or kill bacteria are crucial for humanity. As a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been the most widely commercialized of biomedical materials. However, long-term use of significant amounts of Ag NPs can be potentially harmful to human health through a condition known as argyria, in addition to being toxic to many environmental systems. It is, thus, highly necessary to reduce the amount of Ag NPs employed in medical treatments while also ensuring maintenance of antimicrobial properties, in addition to reducing the overall cost of treatment for humanitarian utilization. For this purpose, naturally sourced antimicrobial polylysine (PL) is used to partially replace Ag NPs within the materials composition. Accordingly, a series of PL, Ag NPs, and lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) composite biofoams (LPU-PL-Ag) were prepared. These proposed composite biofoams, containing at most only 2 % PL and 0.03 % Ag NPs, significantly inhibited the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria within 1 h and caused irreversibly destructive bactericidal effects. Additionally, with a layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on the surface, PDMS-LPU-PL(2 %)-Ag(0.03 %) can effectively prevent bacterial adhesion with a clearance rate of about 70 % for both bacterial biofilms within three days and a growth rate of more than 80 % for mouse fibroblasts NIH 3 T3. These lignin-based polyurethane biofoam dressings, with shorter antiseptic sterilization times and broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, are extremely advantageous for infected wound treatment and healing in clinical use.

Enhanced Anticoagulation of Hierarchy Liquid Infused Surfaces in Blood Flow

Liquid infused surfaces (LIS) hold remarkable potential in anticoagulation. However, liquid loss of LIS in the bloodstream remains a challenge toward its clinical application. Here, micronano hierarchy structures are obtained on the titanium alloy substrate by regulating the microspheres' distribution. When the gap between the microspheres is smaller than the diameter of the red blood cell (RBC), the LIS is more stable under the blood wash and presents a better anticoagulation performance. The proper interval is found to prevent the RBCs from entering the gap and remove the liquid on the surface. The retained thickness of the liquid film is measured by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. The LIS is applied on the front guide vane of an artificial heart pump and exhibits significant improvement on anticoagulation in the blood circulation in vitro for 25 h. The techniques and findings can be used to optimize the anticoagulation performance of LIS-related biomedical implant devices.

Antifouling Coatings from Glassy Polyelectrolyte Complex Films

Coatings that prevent or decrease fouling are sought for many applications, including those that inhibit the attachment of organisms in aquatic environments. To date, antifouling coatings have mostly followed design criteria assembled over decades: surfaces should be well/strongly hydrated, possess low net charge, and maintain a hydrophilic character when exposed to the location of use. Thus, polymers based on ethylene glycol or zwitterionic repeat units have been shown to be highly effective. Unfortunately, hydrated materials can be quite soft, limiting their use in some environments. In a major paradigm shift, this work describes glassy antifouling films made from certain complexes of positive and negative polyelectrolytes. The dense network of electrostatic interactions yields tough materials below the glass transition temperature, Tg, in normal use, while the highly ionic character of these polyelectrolyte complexes ensures strong hydration. The proximity of equal numbers of opposite charges within these complexes mimics zwitterionic structures. Films, assembled layer-by-layer from aqueous solutions, contained sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone), SPEEK, a rigid polyelectrolyte that binds strongly to a selection of quaternary ammonium polycations. Layer-by-layer buildup of SPEEK and polycations was linear, indicating strong complexes between polyelectrolytes. Calorimetry also showed that complex formation was exothermic. Surfaces coated with these films in the 100 nm thickness range completely resisted adhesion of the common flagellate green algae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which were removed from surfaces at a minimum applied flow rate of 0.8 cm s-1. The total surface charge density of adsorbed cations, determined with a sensitive radioisotopic label, was very low, around 10% of a monolayer, which minimized adsorption driven by counterion release from the surface. The viscoelastic properties of the complexes, which were stable even in concentrated salt solutions, were explored using rheology of bulk samples. When fully hydrated, their Tg values were observed to be above 75 °C.

Investigation of the Release Rate of Biocide and Corrosion Resistance of Vinyl-, Acrylic-, and Epoxy-Based Antifouling Paints on Steel in Marine Infrastructures

This study comprehensively assesses the release rate of biocides, corrosion effects related to antifouling, and the physical properties of different paint types. Tests were conducted to measure thickness, viscosity, hardness, bending, adhesion, gloss, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, scratch resistance, polarization, and salt spray. The paints evaluated include resin-based, acrylic-based, epoxy-based, and vinyl-based formulations. The study investigates the influence of biocide content, biocide particle size, and immersion time on release rate using a lab-scale setup. Results showed that acrylic-based paints had a higher biocide release rate due to faster hydrolysis, while smaller biocide particle sizes led to higher release rates in resin-based paints. Optimal total biocide contents were determined to be 30% for acrylic-based, 60% for epoxy-based, and 50% for vinyl-based paints. Antifouling corrosion analysis demonstrated that sample with an optimal release rate effectively prevent algae growth and fouling. Acrylic-based paint with 30 wt.% biocide content exhibited superior adhesion with a dolly separation force of 4.12 MPa. Evaluating the impact of synthesized polyaniline on 30 wt.% epoxy-based paint, a sample coated with 10 wt.% polyaniline represented a low corrosion rate of 0.35 µm/year and a high impedance value of approximately 37,000 Ohm·cm-2.

Long-term stability of aerophilic metallic surfaces underwater

Aerophilic surfaces immersed underwater trap films of air known as plastrons. Plastrons have typically been considered impractical for underwater engineering applications due to their metastable performance. Here, we describe aerophilic titanium alloy (Ti) surfaces with extended plastron lifetimes that are conserved for months underwater. Long-term stability is achieved by the formation of highly rough hierarchically structured surfaces via electrochemical anodization combined with a low-surface-energy coating produced by a fluorinated surfactant. Aerophilic Ti surfaces drastically reduce blood adhesion and, when submerged in water, prevent adhesion of bacteria and marine organisms such as barnacles and mussels. Overall, we demonstrate a general strategy to achieve the long-term stability of plastrons on aerophilic surfaces for previously unattainable underwater applications.

Ice-Inspired Polymeric Slippery Surface with Excellent Smoothness, Stability, and Antifouling Properties

Ice is omnipresent in our daily life and possesses intrinsic slipperiness as a result of the formation of a quasi-liquid layer. Thus, the functional surfaces inspired by ice show great prospects in widespread fields from surface lubrication to antifouling coatings. Herein, we report an ice-inspired polymeric slippery surface (II-PSS) constructed by a self-lubricating liquid layer and a densely surface-grafted polymer brush. The polymer brush layer could act as a homogeneous matrix to capture lubricant molecules via strong and dynamic dipole-dipole interactions to form a stable quasi-liquid layer that resembles the ice surface. The II-PSS can be easily fabricated on various solid substrates (e.g., silicon, glass, aluminum oxide, plastics, etc.) with excellent smoothness (roughness of ∼0.4 nm), optical transmittance (∼94.5%), as well as repellence toward diverse liquids with different surface tensions (22.3-72.8 mN m-1), pH values (1-14), salinity, and organic pollutants. Further investigation shows that the II-PSS exhibits extremely low attachment for proteins and marine organisms (e.g., algae and mussels) for over one month. These results demonstrate a robust and promising strategy for high-performance antifouling coatings.

Silicone-Based Lubricant-Infused Slippery Coating Covalently Bound to Aluminum Substrates for Underwater Applications

Wetting of solid surfaces is crucial for biological and industrial processes but is also associated with several harmful phenomena such as biofouling and corrosion that limit the effectiveness of various technologies in aquatic environments. Despite extensive research, these challenges remain critical today. Recently, we have developed a facile UV-grafting technique to covalently attach silicone-based coatings to solid substrates. In this study, the grafting process was evaluated as a function of UV exposure time on aluminum substrates. While short-time exposure to UV light results in the formation of lubricant-infused slippery surfaces (LISS), a flat, nonporous variant of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces, longer exposure leads to the formation of semi-rigid cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, both covalently bound to the substrate. These coatings were exposed to aquatic media to evaluate their resistance to corrosion and biofouling. While the UV-grafted cross-linked PDMS coating effectively inhibits aluminum corrosion in aquatic environments and allows organisms to grow on the surface, the LISS coating demonstrates improved corrosion resistance but inhibits biofilm adhesion. The synergy between facile and low-cost fabrication, rapid binding kinetics, eco-friendliness, and nontoxicity of the applied materials to aquatic life combined with excellent wetting-repellent characteristics make this technology applicable for implementation in aquatic environments.

Graphene oxide reinforced chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol antibacterial coatings on stainless steel surfaces exhibit superior bioactivity without human cell cytotoxicity

The study proposes an alternative therapeutics to diminish bacterial attachment in biomedical implants by modifying their surface with passive coatings. A uniform, thin-film of chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide (CS/PVA/GO) was coated on 316 L stainless steel (SS) surface through spread casting followed by solvent evaporation. The abundant anchoring sites available at macromolecular interfaces of chitosan/PVA matrix facilitated a smooth, dense loading of GO. The effect of GO content on physicochemical features, antibacterial potential, and biocompatibility of coatings was thoroughly studied. The hybrid films displayed good adhesion behavior, and UV-protection ability with desired mechanical and thermal stability when coated on SS surface. Coatings manifested a 1.5-1.7 fold rise in antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus and exhibited a permanent biocidal response after 6 h of contact-active behaviour. We investigated a 3-fold generation of reactive oxygen species as the predominant antibacterial mechanism, which diminishes bacterial integrity by inducing protein leakage (8.5-9 fold higher) and suppressing respiratory chain activity as two secondary mechanisms. All coatings with varying GO content appeared non-haemolytic (<2%) with ultra-low cytotoxicity (<29.08%) against human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The degradation rate of coatings in simulated body fluid exhibited a higher stability, indicated by a lower weight loss (69-78%) and a decrease in pH values as the GO content in coatings increased from 0.05 to 0.15 wt%. Such anti-infective coating is a step forward in inhibiting bacterial colonization on SS surfaces to extend its lifespan.

Interfacial Regulation for 3D Printing based on Slice-Based Photopolymerization

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, can turn computer-aided designs into delicate structures directly and on demand by eliminating expensive molds, dies, or lithographic masks. Among the various technical forms, light-based 3D printing mainly involved the control of polymer-based matter fabrication and realized a field of manufacturing with high tunability of printing format, speed, and precision. Emerging slice- and light-based 3D-printing methods have prosperously advanced in recent years but still present challenges to the versatility of printing continuity, printing process, and printing details control. Herein, the field of slice- and light-based 3D printing is discussed and summarized from the view of interfacial regulation strategies to improve the printing continuity, printing process control, and the character of printed results, and several potential strategies to construct complex 3D structures of distinct characteristics with extra external fields, which are favorable for the further improvement and development of 3D printing, are proposed.

Synergistic Benefits of Micro/Nanostructured Oil-Impregnated Surfaces in Reducing Fouling while Enhancing Heat Transfer

Liquid-liquid heat exchangers that operate in marine environments are susceptible to biofouling, which decreases the overall heat exchange between hot and cold liquids by increasing the conduction resistance. Recently, micro/nanostructured oil-impregnated surfaces have been shown to significantly reduce biofouling. However, their potential as a heat exchanger material has not been studied. Neither is it obvious since the oil used for impregnation increases the wall thickness and the associated conduction resistance. Here, by conducting extensive field and laboratory studies supported by theoretical modeling of heat transfer in oil-infused heat exchanger tubes, we report the synergistic benefits of micro/nanostructured oil-impregnated surfaces for reducing biofouling while maintaining good heat transfer. These benefits justify the use of lubricant-infused surfaces as heat exchanger materials, in particular in marine environments.

Hydrogel-Anchored Fe-Based Amorphous Coatings with Integrated Antifouling and Anticorrosion Functionality

Biofouling and corrosion of underwater equipment induced by marine organisms have become major issues in the marine industry. The superior corrosion resistance of Fe-based amorphous coatings makes them suitable for marine applications; however, they have a poor antifouling ability. In this work, a hydrogel-anchored amorphous (HAM) coating with satisfactory antifouling and anticorrosion performance is designed, utilizing an interfacial engineering strategy involving micropatterning, surface hydroxylation, and a dopamine intermediate layer to increase the adhesion strength between the hydrogel layer and the amorphous coating. The as-obtained HAM coating exhibits exceptional antifouling properties, achieving 99.8% resistance to algae, 100% resistance to mussels, and excellent biocorrosion resistance against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antifouling and anticorrosion performance of the HAM coating was also explored by conducting a marine field test in the East China Sea, and no signs of corrosion and fouling are observed after 1 month of immersion. It is revealed that the outstanding antifouling properties stem from the killing-resisting-camouflaging trinity that resists organism attachment across different length scales, and the excellent anticorrosion performance originates from the remarkable barrier of the amorphous coating against Cl^- ion diffusion and microbe-induced biocorrosion. This work presents a novel methodology for designing marine protective coating with excellent antifouling and anticorrosion properties.

All-perfluoropolymer, nonlinear stability-assisted monolithic surface combines topology-specific superwettability with ultradurability

Developing versatile and robust surfaces that mimic the skins of living beings to regulate air/liquid/solid matter is critical for many bioinspired applications. Despite notable achievements, such as in the case of developing robust superhydrophobic surfaces, it remains elusive to realize simultaneously topology-specific superwettability and multipronged durability owing to their inherent tradeoff and the lack of a scalable fabrication method. Here, we present a largely unexplored strategy of preparing an all-perfluoropolymer (Teflon), nonlinear stability-assisted monolithic surface for efficient regulating matters. The key to achieving topology-specific superwettability and multilevel durability is the geometric-material mechanics design coupling superwettability stability and mechanical strength. The versatility of the surface is evidenced by its manufacturing feasibility, multiple-use modes (coating, membrane, and adhesive tape), long-term air trapping in 9-m-deep water, low-fouling droplet transportation, and self-cleaning of nanodirt. We also demonstrate its multilevel durability, including strong substrate adhesion, mechanical robustness, and chemical stability, all of which are needed for real-world applications.

Bio-inspired and metal-derived superwetting surfaces: Function, stability and applications

Due to their exceptional anti-icing, anti-corrosion, and anti-drag qualities, biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces, which are widely employed in the aerospace, automotive, electronic, and biomedical industries, have raised significant concern. However, further applications in other domains have been hampered by the poor mechanical and chemical durability of superwetting metallic surfaces, which can result in metal fatigue and corrosion. The potential for anti-corrosion, anti-contamination, anti-icing, oil/water separation, and oil transportation on surfaces with superwettability has increased in recent years due to the advancement of research in biomimetic superwetting interface theory and practice. Recent developments in functionalized biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces were summarized in this paper. Firstly, a detailed presentation of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces with unique capabilities was made. The problems with the long-term mechanical and chemical stability of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces were then examined, along with potential solutions. Finally, in an effort to generate fresh concepts for the study of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces, the applications of superwetting metallic surfaces in various domains were discussed in depth. The future direction of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces was also addressed.

Engineering of Graphdiyne-Based Functional Coatings for the Protection of Arbitrary Shapes of Copper Substrates

Copper-based materials are very important for many application fields from marine industry to energy management and electronic devices. For most of these applications, the copper objects require long-term contact to a wet and salty environment, which leads to serious corrosion of copper. In this work, we report a thin graphdiyne layer directly grown on arbitrary shapes of copper objects at mild conditions, which could function as a protective coating for the copper substrates in artificial seawater with corrosion inhibition efficiency of ∼99.75%. To further improve the protective performance of the coating, the graphdiyne layer is fluorinated and followed by infusion with a fluorine-containing lubricant (i.e., perfluoropolyether). As a result, a slippery surface is obtained, which shows enhanced corrosion inhibition efficiency of ∼99.99% as well as excellent antibiofouling properties against microorganisms, such as protein and algae. Finally, the coatings are successfully applied in the protection of a commercial copper radiator from long-term attack of artificial seawater without disturbing its thermal conductivity. These results demonstrate the great potential of graphdiyne-based functional coatings for the protection of copper devices in aggressive environments.

Fluid manipulation via multifunctional lubricant infused slippery surfaces: principle, design and applications

Water-repellent interfaces with high performance have emerged as an indispensable platform for developing advanced materials and devices. Inspired by the pitcher plant, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) with reliable hydrophobicity have proven to possess great potential for various applications in droplet and bubble manipulation, droplet energy harvesting, condensation, fog collection, anti-icing, and anti-biofouling due to their excellent properties such as persistent surface hydrophobicity, molecular smoothness, and fluidity. This review aims to introduce the development history of interaction between SLIPSs and fluids as well as the design principles, preparation methods, and various applications of some of the more typical SLIPSs. The fluid manipulation strategies of the slippery surfaces have been proposed including the wettability pattern, oriented micro-structure, and geometric gradient. At last, the application prospects of SLIPSs in various fields and the challenges in the design and fabrication of slippery surfaces are analyzed. We envision that this review can provide an overview of the fluid manipulating processes on slippery surfaces for researchers in both academic and industrial fields.

Clinical effect of minimally invasive technique of internal fixation device removal in patients with healed long tubular bone fractures

Objective

To investigate the clinical effect of minimally invasive technique applied to internal fixation removal in patients with healed long tubular bone fractures.

Methods

The records of patients with internal fixation of long tubular bone fracture who underwent the removal of the internal fixation device after fracture healing in The Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College from May 2020 to December 2021 were reviewed. According to the different operation methods of taking out the internal fixation device, patients were divided into minimally invasive group (n=40) and traditional group (n=45). The perioperative indexes, levels of inflammatory factors tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), C-reactive protein (CRP), Karnofsky Performance Score (KPS), visual analog scale (VAS) pain score and complications were compared between the two groups.

Results

The drainage volume, bleeding volume, incision length and hospital stay in the minimally invasive group were significantly lower than those in the traditional group (P<0.05). The KPS score of minimally invasive group was significantly higher than that of traditional group at one week and one month after the operation, and the VAS score of minimally invasive group was significantly lower than that of traditional group at one day and one week after the operation (P<0.05). The levels of TNF-α and CRP in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05). There was one case of infection in the minimally invasive group, one case of secondary fracture and two cases of infection in the traditional group(P>0.05).

Conclusions

Minimally invasive surgery for the removal of the internal fixation device in patients with healed long tubular bone fractures with internal fixation is associated with significantly improved clinical effect, relieved symptoms, reduced inflammatory response, and improved functional recovery of patients.

Superhydrophobic Biological Fluid-Repellent Surfaces: Mechanisms and Applications

Superhydrophobic biological fluid-repellent surfaces (SBFRSs) have attracted great attention in the treatment of blood and urine-related diseases because of their unique wettability and compatibility, which creates a new path for the development of medical apparatus and instruments, and are expected to create advances in various fields. Here, this review provides an up-to-date summary of research progress on the repellent mechanism and application of SBFRSs. The underlying physical and chemical principles for designing superhydrophobic surfaces are first introduced. Then, the dialectical influences of solid-liquid interactions between superhydrophobic surfaces and biological fluids on the wettability and compatibility are emphatically expounded. Subsequently, attention is drawn to the recent applications of SBFRSs in biomedical fields, such as surgical medical apparatus, implant materials, extracorporeal circulation devices, and biological fluid detection. Finally, the outlook and challenges in terms of employing SBFRSs are also discussed. This review is expected to provide a comprehensive guidance for the preparation of SBFRSs with compatibility and long-term superhydrophobic stability that is closely related to clinical applications.

Bioinspired liquid-infused surface for biomedical and biosensing applications

Nature always inspires us to develop advanced materials for diverse applications. The liquid-infused surface (LIS) inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plants has aroused broad interest in fabricating anti-biofouling materials over the past decade. The infused liquid layer on the solid substrate repels immiscible fluids and displays ultralow adhesion to various biomolecules. Due to these fascinating features, bioinspired LIS has been applied in biomedical-related fields. Here, we review the recent progress of LIS in bioengineering, medical devices, and biosensing, and highlight how the infused liquid layer affects the performance of medical materials. The prospects for the future trend of LIS are also presented.

Liquid-Repellent Surfaces

Surfaces are vibrant sites for various activities with environments, especially as the transfer station for mass and energy exchange. In nature, natural creatures exhibit special wetting and interfacial properties such as water repellency and water affinity to adapt to various environmental challenges by taking advantage of air or liquid infusion media. Inspired by natural surfaces, various engineered liquid-repellent surfaces have been developed with a wide range of applications in both open and closed underwater environments. In particular, underwater conditions are characterized by high viscosity, high pressure, and complex compositions, which pose more challenges for the design of robust and functional repellent surfaces. In this Perspective, we take a parallel approach to introduce two classical liquid-repellent surfaces: an air-infused repellent surface and a lubricated liquid-repellent surface. Then we highlight fundamental challenges and design configurations of robust liquid-repellent surfaces both in air and underwater. We summarize the advantages and drawbacks of two kinds of repellent surfaces and list several applications of liquid-repellent surfaces for use in the ocean, medical care, and energy harvesting. Finally, we provide an outlook of research directions for robust liquid-repellent surfaces.

Nontoxic Liquid-Infused Slippery Coating Prepared on Steel Substrates Inhibits Corrosion and Biofouling Adhesion

Wetting of surfaces plays a vital role in many biological and industrial processes. There are several phenomena closely related to wetting such as biofouling and corrosion that cause the deterioration of materials, while the efforts to prevent the degradation of surface functionality have spread over several millennia. Antifouling coatings have been developed to prevent/delay both corrosion and biofouling, but the problems remain unsolved, influencing the everyday life of the modern society in terms of safety and expenses. In this study, liquid-infused slippery surfaces (LISSs), a recently developed nontoxic repellent technology, that is, a flat variation of omniphobic slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), were studied for their anti-corrosion and marine anti-biofouling characteristics on metallic substrates under damaged and plain undamaged conditions. Austenitic stainless steel was chosen as a model due to its wide application in aquatic environments. Our LISS coating effectively prevents biofouling adhesion and decays corrosion of metallic surfaces even if they are severely damaged. The mechanically robust LISS reported in this study significantly extends the SLIPS technology, prompting their application in the marine environment due to the synergy between the facile fabrication process, rapid binding kinetics, nontoxic, ecofriendly, and low-cost applied materials together with excellent repellent characteristics.

Role of chemistry in bio-inspired liquid wettability

Chemistry and topography are the two distinct available tools for customizing different bio-inspired liquid wettability including superhydrophobicity, superamphiphobicity, underwater superoleophobicity, underwater superoleophilicity, and liquid infused slippery property. In nature, various living species possessing super and special liquid wettability inherently comprises of distinctly patterned surface topography decorated with low/high surface energy. Inspired from the topographically diverse natural species, the variation in surface topography has been the dominant approach for constructing bio-inspired antiwetting interfaces. However, recently, the modulation of chemistry has emerged as a facile route for the controlled tailoring of a wide range of bio-inspired liquid wettability. This review article aims to summarize the various reports published over the years that has elaborated the distinctive importance of both chemistry and topography in imparting and modulating various bio-inspired wettability. Moreover, this article outlines some obvious advantages of chemical modulation approach over topographical variation. For example, the strategic use of the chemical approach has allowed the facile, simultaneous, and independent tailoring of both liquid wettability and other relevant physical properties. We have also discussed the design of different antiwetting patterned and stimuli-responsive interfaces following the strategic and precise alteration of chemistry for various prospective applications.

Long-Term Static and Dynamic Corrosion Stability of Nonwetting Surfaces

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) and lubricant-infused surfaces (LISs) are two classes of nonwetting surfaces that have drawn attention due to their advanced functional properties including corrosion inhibition. Yet there is a conspicuous lack of corrosion study of SHSs and LISs with respect to their fabrication and material parameters, especially at high temperatures and under dynamic flow conditions over long durations, which is sought to be addressed in this article. Considering copper SHSs and LISs, a full factorial combinatorial study of two facile texturing processes, electrodeposition and etching, two different functionalization agents, stearic acid and mercaptan, and two types of infused lubricants, Krytox 104 and DOWSIL 510, is presented, encompassing over 650 measurements on 90 tested surfaces. All fabricated surfaces demonstrated water repellency with a contact angle above 150° and a sliding angle below 7°. For the first time, the study examines high-temperature corrosion stability and long-term corrosion durability of the nonwetting surfaces in both static fluid and dynamic turbulent flow conditions over a period of 30 days. LISs and SHSs are shown to provide excellent corrosion inhibition over all tested corrosion conditions, with negligible presence of corrosion species on the surfaces and no deterioration of the texturing. The surfaces are also shown to rejuvenate easily to the initial wettability and corrosion resistance values. This study provides valuable insights into the selection of materials and processing parameters for the fabrication of nonwetting surfaces for the application of interest.

Durable Liquid- and Solid-Repellent Elastomeric Coatings Infused with Partially Crosslinked Lubricants

Surfaces that are resistant to both liquid fouling and solid fouling are critical for many industrial and biomedical applications. However, surfaces developed to address these challenges thus far have been generally susceptible to mechanical damage. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of robust solid- and liquid-repellent elastomeric coatings that incorporate partially crosslinked lubricating chains within a durable polymer matrix. In particular, we fabricated partially crosslinked omniphobic polyurethane (omni-PU) coatings that can repel a broad range of liquid and solid foulants. The fabricated coatings are an order of magnitude more resistant to cyclic abrasion than current state-of-the-art slippery surfaces. Further through the integration of classic wetting and tribology models, we introduce a new material design parameter (K_AR) for abrasion-resistant polymeric coatings. This combination of mechanical durability and broad antifouling properties enables the implication of such coatings to a wide variety of industrial and medical settings, including biocompatible implants, underwater vehicles, and antifouling robotics.

From Sticky to Slippery: Self-Functionalizing Lubricants for In Situ Fabrication of Liquid-Infused Surfaces

Liquid-infused surfaces offer a versatile approach to create self-cleaning coatings. In such coatings, a thin film of a fluid lubricant homogeneously coats the substrate and thus prevents direct contact with a second, contaminating liquid. For stable repellency, the interfacial energies need to be controlled to ensure that the lubricant is not replaced by the contaminating liquid. Here, we introduce the concept of self-functionalizing lubricants. Functional molecular species that chemically match the lubricant but possess selective anchor groups are dissolved in the lubricant and self-adhere to the surface, forming the required surface chemistry in situ from within the applied lubricant layer. To add flexibility to the self-functionalizing concept, the substrate is first primed with a thin polydopamine base layer, which can be deposited to nearly any substrate material from aqueous solutions and retains reactivity toward electron-donating groups such as amines. The temporal progression of the in situ functionalization is investigated by ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance and correlated to macroscopic changes in contact angle and contact angle hysteresis. The flexibility of the approach is underlined by creating repellent coatings with various substrate/lubricant combinations. The prepared liquid-infused surfaces significantly reduce cement adhesion and provide easy-to-clean systems under real-world conditions on shoe soles.

Stabilizing Ultrasmall Ceria-Cluster Nanozyme for Antibacterial and Antibiofouling Applications

The generation of undesired biofouling in medical and engineering applications results in a reduction in function and durability. Copying functionalities of natural enzymes to combat biofouling by artificial nanomaterials is highly attractive but still challenged by the inferior catalytic activity and specificity principally because of low densities of active sites. Here, an innovate strategy is demonstrated to stabilize high-density ultrasmall ceria clusters on zirconia for biofouling prevention. Benefiting from the unique structure, CeO₂ @ZrO₂ nanozyme can significantly enhance the haloperoxidase-mimicking activity in catalyzing the oxidation of bromide with H₂ O₂ into biocidal hypobromous acid as a result of abundant defects and surface strong acidity sites, inducing impressive antibacterial and antibiofouling capacity compared with that of pristine CeO₂ . This work is expected to open a new avenue for the rational design of cluster catalysts for various targeting catalytic applications.

Pathogen-Repellent Plastic Warp with Built-In Hierarchical Structuring Prevents the Contamination of Surfaces with Coronaviruses

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it is evident that viral spread is mediated through several different transmission pathways. Reduction of these transmission pathways is urgently needed to control the spread of viruses between infected and susceptible individuals. Herein, we report the use of pathogen-repellent plastic wraps (RepelWrap) with engineered surface structures at multiple length scales (nanoscale to microscale) as a means of reducing the indirect contact transmission of viruses through fomites. To quantify viral repellency, we developed a touch-based viral quantification assay to mimic the interaction of a contaminated human touch with a surface through the modification of traditional viral quantification methods (viral plaque and TCID50 assays). These studies demonstrate that RepelWrap reduced contamination with an enveloped DNA virus as well as the human coronavirus 229E (HuCoV-229E) by more than 4 log 10 (>99.99%) compared to a standard commercially available polyethylene plastic wrap. In addition, RepelWrap maintained its repellent properties after repeated 300 touches and did not show an accumulation in viral titer after multiple contacts with contaminated surfaces, while increases were seen on other commonly used surfaces. These findings show the potential use of repellent surfaces in reducing viral contamination on surfaces, which could, in turn, reduce the surface-based spread and transmission.

Atomic Chromium Coordinated Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Bioinspired Antibiofouling in Seawater

Artificial nanozymes exerting enzyme functionality are recognized as promising alternatives of natural enzymes in biomimetic chemistry. Natural haloperoxidases that utilize hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) to catalytically convert halide into strong biocidal hypohalous acid hold great promise for thwarting biofouling, while their practical application remains highly questionable as instability of natural enzymes and inadequate H₂ O₂ . Herein a semiconducting nanozyme consisting of chromium single atoms coordinated on carbon nitride (Cr-SA-CN) that performs bifunctional roles of nonsacrificial H₂ O₂ photosynthesis and haloperoxidase-mimicking activity for antibiofouling is constructed. Such nanozyme is capable of generating H₂ O₂ from water and O₂ upon visible-light illumination, and then sustainably self-supplying H₂ O₂ for haloperoxidase-mimicking reaction in a sequential manner. This dual-activity Cr-SA-CN overcomes H₂ O₂ dilemma and yields hypobromous acid continuously, inducing remarkable bactericidal capability. When used as an eco-friendly coating additive, it is successfully demonstrated that Cr-SA-CN enables an inert surface against marine biofouling. Thereby, this study not only illustrates an attractive strategy for antibiofouling but also opens an avenue to construct valuable nanoplatform with multifunctionality for future applications.

Controllable Electrodeposition Adjusts the Electrochromic Properties of Co and Mo Co-Modified WO3 Films

Metal ion modification is considered to be an effective way to construct metal oxides with specific physical and chemical properties. In this paper, we prepare a tungsten oxide (WO3) film co-modified by Co-ion and Mo-ion to serve as the electrochromic material through a one-step electrodeposition method. The effect of electrodeposition time on film thickness, surface morphology and electrochromic properties is systematically studied as well. The results show that, compared with pure WO3 film, the surface morphology of the tungsten oxide film modified by Co-ion and Mo-ion (WO3: Co, Mo) is significantly different. The Co and Mo co-modified film possesses a higher transmission modulation (58.5% at 600 nm) and rapid switching speed (coloring and bleaching time are 2.7 s and 5.6 s, respectively), low impedance value and excellent cycle stability. The performance enhancement is mainly attributed to the coral-like structure of the membrane, which provides a larger specific surface area, more ion adsorption sites and faster ion diffusion. Therefore, this work provides a fast and low-cost method to prepare tungsten oxide electrochromic films co-modified with cobalt and molybdenum ions. At the same time, it also provides an idea to obtain films with different electrochromic properties by adjusting the film thickness.

Bioinspired antifouling Fe-based amorphous coating via killing-resisting dual surface modifications

Fe-based amorphous coatings with outstanding corrosion resistance are promise for marine applications. However, these coatings encounter a great challenge of biofouling in marine environments. Inspired by the unique micro-nano hierarchical structure of shark skin with excellent antifouling properties, in this paper, we construct a bioinspired Fe-based amorphous coating with killing-resisting dual-effect via proper surface modifications, i.e., the modification with micro-patterned nanostructured Cu₂O fibers (killing effect), followed by the modification with superhydrophobic surface (resisting effect). As a result, the modified amorphous coating exhibits impressive antifouling properties, achieving 98.6% resistance to Nitzschia closterium f. minutissima, 87% resistance to Bovine serum albumin protein and 99.8% resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. The remarkable antifouling performance is attributed to a synergistic antifouling mechanism from both resisting effect and killing effect, wherein the superhydrophobic surface provides a barrier to resist protein adsorption, while the patterned nanostructured Cu₂O fibers supply Cu⁺ ions to kill bacterial cells. In addition, the modified amorphous coating also exhibits excellent mechanical robustness, which ensures the durability of the Fe-based amorphous coating in practical services. This work may promote the development of new durable metal-based coatings integrated with anti-fouling and anti-corrosion properties.

Design of Robust Lubricant-Infused Surfaces for Anti-Corrosion

A lubricant-infused surface such as an oil-impregnated porous surface has great potentials for various applications due to its omniphobicity. However, the drainage and depletion of the lubricant liquid oil remain practical concerns for real applications. Here, we investigate the effect of a specially designed bottle-shaped nanopore of anodic aluminum oxide, which has a smaller pore diameter in the upper region than the lower one, on the oil retentivity and anti-corrosion efficacy. The effects of the viscosity and volatility of the lubricant oil were further investigated for synergy. Results show that the bottle-shaped pore helps to stably immobilize the lubricant oil in the nanostructure and significantly enhances the robustness and anti-corrosion efficacy, compared to the conventional cylindrical pores with straight walls as well as the hybrid one featured with additional pillar structures. Moreover, the enlarged oil capacity in the bottle-shaped pore allows the oil to cover the underlying metallic surface effectively at cracks, enhancing the damage tolerance with a unique self-healing capability. The oil with a higher viscosity further enhances the benefits so that the bottle-shaped pore impregnated with a higher-viscosity oil shows greater anti-corrosion efficacy. It suggests that the combination of the geometric features of nanopores and the fluid properties of lubricant liquid can lead to a maximized longevity and anti-corrosion efficacy of the liquid-infused surfaces for real applications.

Simultaneous Realization of Superoleophobicity and Strong Substrate Adhesion in Water via a Unique Segment Orientation Mechanism

The underwater superoleophobicity of a coating is often caused by its preferential water affinity, which, however, normally weakens the substrate adhesion property. In this work, a new strategy is reported for achieving strong underwater adhesion between a well-designed amphiphilic polyurethane coating and a diverse range of substrates while also rendering the coating surface's superoleophobicity. When the coating, which is a mixture of an amphiphilic polyurethane and a water miscible solvent, is immersed in water, the hydrophobic segments aggregate to orientate and pile along the surface of substrates via a segment orientation mechanism triggered by solvent exchange with water penetration to exert strong adhesion. At the same time, the hydrophilic segments will physically crosslink to form a hydrogel coating, endowing the substrate with underwater superoleophobicity. This work provides a facile, versatile, and scalable approach for the future design of superoleophobic coatings in a water environment.

Robust and durable liquid-repellent surfaces

Fabrication of Slippery Liquid-Infused Coatings in Flexible Narrow-Bore Tubing

We report a layer-by-layer suction-and-flow approach that enables the fabrication of polymer-based "slippery" liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) in the confined luminal spaces of flexible, narrow-bore tubing. These SLIPS-coated tubes can prevent or strongly reduce surface fouling after prolonged contact, storage, or flow of a broad range of complex fluids and viscoelastic materials, including many that are relevant in the contexts of medical devices (e.g., blood and urine), food processing (beverages and fluids), and other commercial and industrial applications. The robust and mechanically compliant nature of the nanoporous coating used to host the lubricating oil phase allows these coated tubes to be bent, flexed, and coiled repeatedly without affecting their inherent slippery and antifouling behaviors. Our results also show that SLIPS-coated tubes can prevent the formation of bacterial biofilms after prolonged and repeated flow-based exposure to the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus and that the anti-biofouling properties of these coated tubes can be further improved or prolonged by coupling this approach with strategies that permit the sustained release of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. The suction-and-flow approach used here enables the application of slippery coatings in the confined luminal spaces of narrow-bore tubing that are difficult to access using several other methods for the fabrication of liquid-infused coatings and can be applied to tubing of arbitrary length and diameter. We anticipate that the materials and approaches reported here will prove useful for reducing or preventing biofouling, process fouling, and the clogging or occlusion of tubing in a wide range of consumer, industrial, and healthcare-oriented applications.
