Strong evidence for d-electron spin transport at room temperature at a LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

Way to a Library of Ti-Series Oxide Nanofiber Sponges that are Highly Stretchable, Compressible, and Bendable

Ti-series oxide ceramics in the form of aerogels, such as TiO2, SrTiO3, BaTiO3, and CaCu3Ti4O12, hold tremendous potential as functional materials owing to their excellent optical, dielectric, and catalytic properties. Unfortunately, these inorganic aerogels are usually brittle and prone to pulverization owing to weak inter-particulate interactions, resulting in restricted application performance and serious health risks. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to synthesize an elastic form of an aerogel-like, highly porous structure, in which activity-switchable Ti-series oxide sols transform from the metastable state to the active state during electrospinning, resulting in condensation and solidification at the whipping stage to obtain curled nanofibers. These curled nanofibers are further entangled when flying in the air to form a physically interlocked, elastic network mimicking the microstructure of high-elasticity hydrogels. This strategy provides a library of Ti-series oxide nanofiber sponges with unprecedented stretchability, compressibility, and bendability, possessing extensive opportunities for greener, safer, and broader applications as integrated or wearable functional devices. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a new, elastic form of TiO2, composed of both "white" and "black" TiO2 nanofiber sponges, is constructed as spontaneous air-conditioning textiles in smart clothing, buildings, and vehicles, with unique bidirectional regulation of radiative cooling in summer and solar heating in winter.

Dynamical Behavior of Pure Spin Current in Organic Materials

Growing concentration on the novel information processing technology and low-cost, flexible materials make the spintronics and organic materials appealing for the future interdisciplinary investigations. Organic spintronics, in this context, has arisen and witnessed great advances during the past two decades owing to the continuous innovative exploitation of the charge-contained spin polarized current. Albeit with such inspiring facts, charge-absent spin angular momentum flow, namely pure spin currents (PSCs) are less probed in organic functional solids. In this review, the past exploring journey of PSC phenomenon in organic materials are retrospected, including non-magnetic semiconductors and molecular magnets. Starting with the basic concepts and the generation mechanism for PSC, the representative experimental observations of PSC in the organic-based networks are subsequently demonstrated and summarized, by accompanying explicit discussion over the propagating mechanism of net spin itself in the organic media. Finally, future perspectives on PSC in organic materials are illustrated mainly from the material point of view, including single molecule magnets, complexes for the organic ligands framework as well as the lanthanide metal complexes, organic radicals, and the emerging 2D organic magnets.

Quantum magnetic phenomena in engineered heterointerface of low-dimensional van der Waals and non-van der Waals materials

Investigating magnetic phenomena at the microscopic level has emerged as an indispensable research domain in the field of low-dimensional magnetic materials. Understanding quantum phenomena that mediate the magnetic interactions in dimensionally confined materials is crucial from the perspective of designing cheaper, compact, and energy-efficient next-generation spintronic devices. The infrequent occurrence of intrinsic long-range magnetic order in dimensionally confined materials hinders the advancement of this domain. Hence, introducing and controlling the ferromagnetic character in two-dimensional materials is important for further prospective studies. The interface in a heterostructure significantly contributes to modulating its collective magnetic properties. Quantum phenomena occurring at the interface of engineered heterostructures can enhance or suppress magnetization of the system and introduce magnetic character to a native non-magnetic system. Considering most 2D magnetic materials are used as stacks with other materials in nanoscale devices, the methods to control the magnetism in a heterostructure and understanding the corresponding mechanism are crucial for promising spintronic and other functional applications. This review highlights the effect of electric polarization of the adjacent layer, changed structural configuration at the vicinity of the interface, natural strain induced by lattice mismatch, and exchange interaction in the interfacial region in modulating the magnetism of heterostructures of van der Waals and non-van der Waals materials. Further, prospects of interface-engineered magnetism in spin-dependent device applications are also discussed.

Manipulation of 2DEG at double-doped high-entropy heterointerfaces

Chemical doping is a dominating method for manipulating oxide two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). However, enhancing the doping level while maintaining the metallic conduction remains a challenge, which limits detailed knowledge of 2DEG manipulation. Herein, we propose a concept of high-entropy heterointerface, which consists of a complex oxide (containing at least 5 elements) at either or both sides of the interface. By doubly doping Sr and Mn elements in the Nd and Al sites of NdAlO₃, we grow Nd_1-xSr_xAl_1-xMn_xO₃ (NSAMO) films onto SrTiO₃ (STO) substrates to fabricate NSAMO/STO high-entropy heterointerfaces with different thicknesses (2-30 nm) and a wide range of doping ratios x (0.14-0.56). The 2DEG conducting behavior is maintained until x = 0.42, which is higher compared with similar studies. The varying x results in the coexistence of rich properties like a weak anti-localization (0.14-0.42), abnormal Hall effect (0.28 & 0.42), Lifshitz transition (0.42) and stable structure. These results confirm the potential of this strategy to tailor 2DEG in all-oxide interfaces.

Strain-Controlled Spin Transition in Heterostructured Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film

Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films have recently attracted much attention as a new platform for surface/interface research, where unconventional structural and physical properties emerge. Among the many MOFs as candidates for fabrication of thin films, Hofmann-type MOFs {Fe(pz)[M(CN)₄]} [pz = pyrazine; M = Ni (Nipz), M = Pt (Ptpz)] are attractive, because they undergo spin transitions with concomitant structural changes. Here, we demonstrate the first example of a strain-controlled spin transition in heterostructured MOF thin films. The spin transition temperature of Ptpz can be controlled in the temperature range of 300-380 K by fabricating a nanometer-sized heterostructured thin film with a Nipz buffer layer, where the smaller lattice of Nipz causes epitaxial compressive strain to the Ptpz layer. The fabricated heterostructured thin film exhibited a remarkable increase in spin transition temperature with a dynamic structural transformation, confirmed by variable-temperature (VT) X-ray diffraction and VT Raman spectroscopy. By verifying interfacial strain in a heterostructured thin film, we can rationally control the characteristics of MOFs-not only spin transition but also various physical properties such as gas storage, catalysis, sensing, proton conductivity, and electrical properties, among others.

Roadmap of spin-orbit torques

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) is an emerging technology that enables the efficient manipulation of spintronic devices. The initial processes of interest in SOTs involved electric fields, spin-orbit coupling, conduction electron spins and magnetization. More recently interest has grown to include a variety of other processes that include phonons, magnons, or heat. Over the past decade, many materials have been explored to achieve a larger SOT efficiency. Recently, holistic design to maximize the performance of SOT devices has extended material research from a nonmagnetic layer to a magnetic layer. The rapid development of SOT has spurred a variety of SOT-based applications. In this Roadmap paper, we first review the theories of SOTs by introducing the various mechanisms thought to generate or control SOTs, such as the spin Hall effect, the Rashba-Edelstein effect, the orbital Hall effect, thermal gradients, magnons, and strain effects. Then, we discuss the materials that enable these effects, including metals, metallic alloys, topological insulators, two-dimensional materials, and complex oxides. We also discuss the important roles in SOT devices of different types of magnetic layers, such as magnetic insulators, antiferromagnets, and ferrimagnets. Afterward, we discuss device applications utilizing SOTs. We discuss and compare three-terminal and two-terminal SOT-magnetoresistive random-access memories (MRAMs); we mention various schemes to eliminate the need for an external field. We provide technological application considerations for SOT-MRAM and give perspectives on SOT-based neuromorphic devices and circuits. In addition to SOT-MRAM, we present SOT-based spintronic terahertz generators, nano-oscillators, and domain wall and skyrmion racetrack memories. This paper aims to achieve a comprehensive review of SOT theory, materials, and applications, guiding future SOT development in both the academic and industrial sectors.

The emergence of magnetic ordering at complex oxide interfaces tuned by defects

Complex oxides show extreme sensitivity to structural distortions and defects, and the intricate balance of competing interactions which emerge at atomically defined interfaces may give rise to unexpected physics. In the interfaces of non-magnetic complex oxides, one of the most intriguing properties is the emergence of magnetism which is sensitive to chemical defects. Particularly, it is unclear which defects are responsible for the emergent magnetic interfaces. Here, we show direct and clear experimental evidence, supported by theoretical explanation, that the B-site cation stoichiometry is crucial for the creation and control of magnetism at the interface between non-magnetic ABO₃-perovskite oxides, LaAlO₃ and SrTiO₃. We find that consecutive defect formation, driven by atomic charge compensation, establishes the formation of robust perpendicular magnetic moments at the interface. Our observations propose a route to tune these emerging magnetoelectric structures, which are strongly coupled at the polar-nonpolar complex oxide interfaces.

Nonreciprocal transport in gate-induced polar superconductor SrTiO3

Polar conductors/superconductors with Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction are potential material platforms for quantum transport and spintronic functionalities. One of their inherent properties is the nonreciprocal transport, where the rightward and leftward currents become inequivalent, reflecting spatial inversion/time-reversal symmetry breaking. Such a rectification effect originating from the polar symmetry has been recently observed at interfaces or bulk Rashba semiconductors, while its mechanism in a polar superconductor remains elusive. Here, we report the nonreciprocal transport in gate-induced two-dimensional superconductor SrTiO₃, which is a Rashba superconductor candidate. In addition to the gigantic enhancement of nonreciprocal signals in the superconducting fluctuation region, we found kink and sharp peak structures around critical temperatures, which reflect the crossover behavior from the paraconductivity origin to the vortex origin, based on a microscopic theory. The present result proves that the nonreciprocal transport is a powerful tool for investigating the interfacial/polar superconductors without inversion symmetry, where rich exotic features are theoretically prognosticated.

Coexistence of large conventional and planar spin Hall effect with long spin diffusion length in a low-symmetry semimetal at room temperature

The spin Hall effect (SHE) is usually observed as a bulk effect in high-symmetry crystals with substantial spin-orbit coupling (SOC), where the symmetric spin-orbit field imposes a widely encountered trade-off between spin Hall angle (θ_SH) and spin diffusion length (L_sf), and spin polarization, spin current and charge current are constrained to be mutually orthogonal. Here, we report a large θ_SH of 0.32 accompanied by a long L_sf of 2.2 μm at room temperature in a low-symmetry few-layered semimetal MoTe₂, thus identifying it as an excellent candidate for simultaneous spin generation, transport and detection. In addition, we report that longitudinal spin current with out-of-plane polarization can be generated by both transverse and vertical charge current, due to the conventional and a newly observed planar SHE, respectively. Our study suggests that manipulation of crystalline symmetries and strong SOC opens access to new charge-spin interconversion configurations and spin-orbit torques for spintronic applications.

Polarization screening-induced epitaxial growth and interfacial magnetism of BiFeO3/PbTiO3nanoplates

Single-crystal BiFeO₃/PbTiO₃nanoplates have been synthesizedviaa hydrothermal method, where BFO films selectively grew on the negative polar surface of PTO with a saturation thickness of about 18–20 nm and a room-temperature ferromagnetism.

Gate-tunable giant nonreciprocal charge transport in noncentrosymmetric oxide interfaces

A polar conductor, where inversion symmetry is broken, may exhibit directional propagation of itinerant electrons, i.e., the rightward and leftward currents differ from each other, when time-reversal symmetry is also broken. This potential rectification effect was shown to be very weak due to the fact that the kinetic energy is much higher than the energies associated with symmetry breaking, producing weak perturbations. Here we demonstrate the appearance of giant nonreciprocal charge transport in the conductive oxide interface, LaAlO₃/SrTiO₃, where the electrons are confined to two-dimensions with low Fermi energy. In addition, the Rashba spin-orbit interaction correlated with the sub-band hierarchy of this system enables a strongly tunable nonreciprocal response by applying a gate voltage. The observed behavior of directional response in LaAlO₃/SrTiO₃ is associated with comparable energy scales among kinetic energy, spin-orbit interaction, and magnetic field, which inspires a promising route to enhance nonreciprocal response and its functionalities in spin orbitronics.

Ultrafast long-range spin-funneling in solution-processed Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites

Room-temperature spin-based electronics is the vision of spintronics. Presently, there are few suitable material systems. Herein, we reveal that solution-processed mixed-phase Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite thin-films transcend the challenges of phonon momentum-scattering that limits spin-transfer in conventional semiconductors. This highly disordered system exhibits a remarkable efficient ultrafast funneling of photoexcited spin-polarized excitons from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) phases at room temperature. We attribute this efficient exciton relaxation pathway towards the lower energy states to originate from the energy transfer mediated by intermediate states. This process bypasses the omnipresent phonon momentum-scattering in typical semiconductors with stringent band dispersion, which causes the loss of spin information during thermalization. Film engineering using graded 2D/3D perovskites allows unidirectional out-of-plane spin-funneling over a thickness of ~600 nm. Our findings reveal an intriguing family of solution-processed perovskites with extraordinary spin-preserving energy transport properties that could reinvigorate the concepts of spin-information transfer.

Large orbital polarization in nickelate-cuprate heterostructures by dimensional control of oxygen coordination

Artificial heterostructures composed of dissimilar transition metal oxides provide unprecedented opportunities to create remarkable physical phenomena. Here, we report a means to deliberately control the orbital polarization in LaNiO₃ (LNO) through interfacing with SrCuO₂ (SCO), which has an infinite-layer structure for CuO₂. Dimensional control of SCO results in a planar-type (P–SCO) to chain-type (C–SCO) structure transition depending on the SCO thickness. This transition is exploited to induce either a NiO₅ pyramidal or a NiO₆ octahedral structure at the SCO/LNO interface. Consequently, a large change in the Ni d orbital occupation up to ~30% is achieved in P–SCO/LNO superlattices, whereas the Ni e_g orbital splitting is negligible in C–SCO/LNO superlattices. The engineered oxygen coordination triggers a metal-to-insulator transition in SCO/LNO superlattices. Our results demonstrate that interfacial oxygen coordination engineering provides an effective means to manipulate the orbital configuration and associated physical properties, paving a pathway towards the advancement of oxide electronics.

In correlated materials, physical properties depend on orbital occupancy and polarization. Here, a way to control the oxygen coordination via dimensionality of superlattices is presented that results in the change of orbital occupancy by 30%, which is larger than what has been achieved by other methods.

Bimodal Phase Diagram of the Superfluid Density in LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} Revealed by an Interfacial Waveguide Resonator

We explore the superconducting phase diagram of the two-dimensional electron system at the LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} interface by monitoring the frequencies of the cavity modes of a coplanar waveguide resonator fabricated in the interface itself. We determine the phase diagram of the superconducting transition as a function of the temperature and electrostatic gating, finding that both the superfluid density and the transition temperature follow a dome shape but that the two are not monotonically related. The ground state of this two-dimensional electron system is interpreted as a Josephson junction array, where a transition from long- to short-range order occurs as a function of the electronic doping. The synergy between correlated oxides and superconducting circuits is revealed to be a promising route to investigate these exotic compounds, complementary to standard magnetotransport measurements.

Physics of SrTiO3-based heterostructures and nanostructures: a review

This review provides a summary of the rich physics expressed within SrTiO3-based heterostructures and nanostructures. The intended audience is researchers who are working in the field of oxides, but also those with different backgrounds (e.g., semiconductor nanostructures). After reviewing the relevant properties of SrTiO3 itself, we will then discuss the basics of SrTiO3-based heterostructures, how they can be grown, and how devices are typically fabricated. Next, we will cover the physics of these heterostructures, including their phase diagram and coupling between the various degrees of freedom. Finally, we will review the rich landscape of quantum transport phenomena, as well as the devices that elicit them.

Room-Temperature Giant Charge-to-Spin Conversion at the SrTiO3-LaAlO3 Oxide Interface

The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface between SrTiO₃ (STO) and LaAlO₃ (LAO) insulating layer is supposed to possess strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. To date, the inverse Edelstein effect (i.e., spin-to-charge conversion) in the 2DEG layer is reported. However, the direct effect of charge-to-spin conversion, an essential ingredient for spintronic devices in a current-induced spin-orbit torque scheme, has not been demonstrated yet. Here we show, for the first time, a highly efficient spin generation with the efficiency of ∼6.3 in the STO/LAO/CoFeB structure at room temperature by using spin torque ferromagnetic resonance. In addition, we suggest that the spin transmission through the LAO layer at a high temperature range is attributed to the inelastic tunneling via localized states in the LAO band gap. Our findings may lead to potential applications in the oxide insulator based spintronic devices.

Observation of inverse Edelstein effect in Rashba-split 2DEG between SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 at room temperature

The Rashba physics has been intensively studied in the field of spin orbitronics for the purpose of searching novel physical properties and the ferromagnetic (FM) magnetization switching for technological applications. We report our observation of the inverse Edelstein effect up to room temperature in the Rashba-split two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) between two insulating oxides, SrTiO3 and LaAlO3, with the LaAlO3 layer thickness from 3 to 40 unit cells (UC). We further demonstrate that the spin voltage could be markedly manipulated by electric field effect for the 2DEG between SrTiO3 and 3-UC LaAlO3. These results demonstrate that the Rashba-split 2DEG at the complex oxide interface can be used for efficient charge-and-spin conversion at room temperature for the generation and detection of spin current.
