Abstract
BACKGROUND Reaching and grasping (R&G) in rats is commonly used as an outcome measure to investigate the effectiveness of rehabilitation or treatment strategies to recover forelimb function post spinal cord injury. Kinematic analysis has been limited to the wrist and digit movements. Kinematic profiles of the more proximal body segments that play an equally crucial role in successfully executing the task remain unexplored. Additionally, understanding of different forelimb muscle activity, their interactions, and their correlation with the kinematics of R&G movement is scarce. NEW METHOD In this work, novel methodologies to comprehensively assess and quantify the 3D kinematics of the proximal and distal forelimb joints along with associated muscle activity during R&G movements in adult rats are developed and discussed. RESULTS Our data show that different phases of R&G identified using the novel kinematic and EMG-based approach correlate with the well-established descriptors of R&G stages derived from the Whishaw scoring system. Additionally, the developed methodology allows describing the temporal activity of individual muscles and associated mechanical and physiological properties during different phases of the motor task. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S) R&G phases and their sub-components are identified and quantified using the developed kinematic and EMG-based approach. Importantly, the identified R&G phases closely match the well-established qualitative descriptors of the R&G task proposed by Whishaw and colleagues. CONCLUSIONS The present work provides an in-depth objective analysis of kinematics and EMG activity of R&G behavior, paving the way to a standardized approach to assessing this critical rodent motor function in future studies.

Abstract
Each individual's movements are sculpted by constant interactions between sensorimotor and sociocultural factors. A theoretical framework grounded in motor control mechanisms articulating how sociocultural and biological signals converge to shape movement is currently missing. Here, we propose a framework for the emerging field of ethnokinesiology aiming to provide a conceptual space and vocabulary to help bring together researchers at this intersection. We offer a first-level schema for generating and testing hypotheses about cultural differences in movement to bridge gaps between the rich observations of cross-cultural movement variations and neurophysiological and biomechanical accounts of movement. We explicitly dissociate two interacting feedback loops that determine culturally relevant movement: one governing sensorimotor tasks regulated by neural signals internal to the body, the other governing ecological tasks generated through actions in the environment producing ecological consequences. A key idea is the emergence of individual-specific and culturally influenced motor concepts in the nervous system, low-dimensional functional mappings between sensorimotor and ecological task spaces. Motor accents arise from perceived differences in motor concept topologies across cultural contexts. We apply the framework to three examples: speech, gait and grasp. Finally, we discuss how ethnokinesiological studies may inform personalized motor skill training and rehabilitation, and challenges moving forward.This article is part of the theme issue 'Minds in movement: embodied cognition in the age of artificial intelligence'.

Abstract
Efficient musculoskeletal simulators and powerful learning algorithms provide computational tools to tackle the grand challenge of understanding biological motor control. Our winning solution for the inaugural NeurIPS MyoChallenge leverages an approach mirroring human skill learning. Using a novel curriculum learning approach, we trained a recurrent neural network to control a realistic model of the human hand with 39 muscles to rotate two Baoding balls in the palm of the hand. In agreement with data from human subjects, the policy uncovers a small number of kinematic synergies, even though it is not explicitly biased toward low-dimensional solutions. However, selectively inactivating parts of the control signal, we found that more dimensions contribute to the task performance than suggested by traditional synergy analysis. Overall, our work illustrates the emerging possibilities at the interface of musculoskeletal physics engines, reinforcement learning, and neuroscience to advance our understanding of biological motor control.

Abstract
Objective.To promote the development of objective and comprehensive motion function assessment for patients, based on high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG), this study investigates the temporal and spatial variations of neuromuscular activities related to upper limb motor dysfunction.Approach.Patients with unilateral upper limb motor dysfunction and healthy controls were enrolled in the study. HD-sEMG was collected from both arms while they were performing eight hand and wrist movements. Muscle synergies were extracted from the HD-sEMG. Symmetry of bilateral upper limb synergies and synergy differences between motions were proposed as spatial indicators to measure alterations in synergy spatial distribution. Additionally, as a temporal characteristic, the correlation of bilateral upper limb activation coefficient was proposed to describe the coordination control of the central nervous system. All temporal and spatial indicators were compared between patients and healthy subjects.Main results.The patients showed a significant decrease (p< 0.05) in the symmetry of bilateral upper limb synergy spatial distribution and correlation of bilateral upper limb activation coefficient. Patients with motor dysfunction also showed an increase in synergy similarity between motions, indicating altered spatial distribution of muscle synergies.Significance.These findings provide valuable insights into specific patterns associated with motor dysfunction, informing motor function assessment, and guiding targeted interventions and rehabilitation strategies for neurologically disordered patients.

Abstract
Prehension movements in primates have been extensively studied for decades, and hand transport and hand grip adjustment are usually considered as the main components of any object reach-to-grasp action. Evident temporal patterns were found for the velocity of the hand during the transport phase and for the digits kinematics during pre-shaping and enclosing phases. However, such kinematics were always analysed separately in regard to time, and never studied in terms of dependence one from another. Nevertheless, if a reliable one-to-one relationship is proven, it would allow reconstructing the digit velocity (and position) simply by knowing the hand acceleration during reaching motions towards the target object, ceasing the usual dependence seen in literature from time of movement and distance from the target. In this study, the aim was precisely to analyse reach-to-grasp motions to explore if such relationship exists and how it can be formulated. Offline and real-time results not only seem to suggest the existence of a time-independent, one-to-one relationship between hand transport and hand grip adjustment, but also that such relationship is quite resilient to the different intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the target objects such as size, shape and position.

Abstract
Background Patients with stroke often experience weakened upper limbs, making daily tasks difficult to perform. Although rehabilitation devices are available, patients often relapse post-discharge due to insufficient practice. We present a home-based hand telerehabilitation intervention using the iManus™ platform comprising a sensorized glove, a mobile app for the patients, and a therapist portal for monitoring patient progress. Objectives This research aimed to examine the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of a home-based telerehabilitation intervention in improving hand function for individuals with mild stroke. A qualitative approach was also used to explore users' experiences, perceived benefits, and challenges associated with using the platform in a home setting. Methods In this single-case study, we delivered a hand telerehabilitation intervention to a chronic stroke patient with impaired hand function using the iManus™ platform. The intervention consisted of 40 home sessions over eight weeks. We assessed feasibility through user adherence and feedback obtained using a System Usability Scale (SUS) and a semi-structured interview with the participant and their informal caregiver. Safety was evaluated by monitoring pain levels using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and efficacy was determined by observing the changes in the fingers' range of motion using the iManus™ platform and clinical outcomes measures, namely the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT). Results Our participant completed all the assigned sessions, with each averaging 20 min. Usability scored 77.5 out of 100 on the SUS. User feedback from the interviews revealed improved mobility and control over therapy as benefits, indicating room for improvement in the intervention's adaptability and functionality. During the intervention, the participant noted no pain increase, and the telerehabilitation platform recorded range of motion improvements for all finger and wrist joints, excluding wrist extension. The FMA scores were 43 at T0, 53 at T1, and 56 at T2, while the JTHFT scores were 223 at T0, 188 at T1, and 240 at T2. Conclusions This single case study demonstrated the preliminary feasibility, safety, and efficacy of a novel home-based hand intervention for stroke survivors. The participant showed improved hand functions, good adherence to the program, and reported satisfaction with the intervention. However, these results are based on a single-case study, and further large-scale studies are needed before any generalization is recommended.

Abstract
Previous research has primarily focused on evaluating the activity of individual muscles in dancers, often neglecting their synergistic interactions. Investigating the differences in lower limb muscle synergy during landing between dancers and healthy controls will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of their neuromuscular control patterns. This study enrolled 22 Latin dancers and 22 healthy participants, who performed a task involving landing from a 30 cm high platform. The data were collected using Vicon systems, force plates, and electromyography (EMG). The processed EMG data were subjected to non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF) for decomposition, followed by classification using K-means clustering algorithm and Pearson correlation coefficients. Three synergies were extracted for both Latin dancers and healthy participants. Synergy 1 showed increased contributions from the tibialis anterior (p < 0.001) and medial gastrocnemius (p = 0.024) in Latin dancers compared to healthy participants. Synergy 3 highlighted significantly greater contributions from the vastus lateralis in healthy participants compared to Latin dancers (p = 0.039). This study demonstrates that Latin dancers exhibit muscle synergies similar to those observed in healthy controls, revealing specific adjustments in the tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius muscles among dancers. This research illustrates how dancers optimize control strategies during landing tasks, offering a novel perspective for comprehensively understanding dancers' neuromuscular control patterns.

Abstract
According to the modular hypothesis for the control of movement, muscles are recruited in synergies, which capture muscle coordination in space, time, or both. In the last two decades, muscle synergy analysis has become a well-established framework in the motor control field and for the characterization of motor impairments in neurological patients. Altered modular control during a locomotion task has been often proposed as a potential quantitative metric for characterizing pathological conditions. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to analyze the recent literature that used a muscle synergy analysis of neurological patients' locomotion as an indicator of motor rehabilitation therapy effectiveness, encompassing the key methodological elements to date. Searches for the relevant literature were made in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus. Most of the 15 full-text articles which were retrieved and included in this review identified an effect of the rehabilitation intervention on muscle synergies. However, the used experimental and methodological approaches varied across studies. Despite the scarcity of studies that investigated the effect of rehabilitation on muscle synergies, this review supports the utility of muscle synergies as a marker of the effectiveness of rehabilitative therapy and highlights the challenges and open issues that future works need to address to introduce the muscle synergies in the clinical practice and decisional process.

Abstract
Muscle synergies are defined as coordinated recruitment of groups of muscles with specific activation balances and time profiles aimed at generating task-specific motor commands. While muscle synergies in postural control have been investigated primarily in reactive balance conditions, the neuromechanical contribution of muscle synergies during voluntary control of upright standing is still unclear. In this study, muscle synergies were investigated during the generation of isometric force at the trunk during the maintenance of standing posture. Participants were asked to maintain the steady-state upright standing posture while pulling forces of different magnitudes were applied at the level at the waist in eight horizontal directions. Muscle synergies were extracted by nonnegative matrix factorization from sixteen lower limb and trunk muscles. An average of 5-6 muscle synergies were sufficient to account for a wide variety of EMG waveforms associated with changes in the magnitude and direction of pulling forces. A cluster analysis partitioned the muscle synergies of the participants into a large group of clusters according to their similarity, indicating the use of a subjective combination of muscles to generate a multidirectional force vector in standing. Furthermore, we found a participant-specific distribution in the values of cosine directional tuning parameters of synergy amplitude coefficients, suggesting the existence of individual neuromechanical strategies to stabilize the whole-body posture. Our findings provide a starting point for the development of novel diagnostic tools to assess muscle coordination in postural control and lay the foundation for potential applications of muscle synergies in rehabilitation.

Abstract
Objective. This research aims to reveal how the synergistic control of upper limb muscles adapts to varying requirements in complex motor tasks and how expertise shapes the motor modules.Approach. We study the muscle synergies of a complex, highly skilled and flexible task-piano playing-and characterize expertise-related muscle-synergy control that permits the experts to effortlessly execute the same task at different tempo and force levels. Surface EMGs (28 muscles) were recorded from adult novice (N= 10) and expert (N= 10) pianists as they played scales and arpeggios at different tempo-force combinations. Muscle synergies were factorized from EMGs.Main results. We found that experts were able to cover both tempo and dynamic ranges using similar synergy selections and achieved better performance, while novices altered synergy selections more to adapt to the changing tempi and keystroke intensities compared with experts. Both groups relied on fine-tuning the muscle weights within specific synergies to accomplish the different task styles, while the experts could tune the muscles in a greater number of synergies, especially when changing the tempo, and switch tempo over a wider range.Significance. Our study sheds light on the control mechanism underpinning expertise-related motor flexibility in highly skilled motor tasks that require decade-long training. Our results have implications on musical and sports training, as well as motor prosthetic design.

Abstract
PURPOSE A broad functional movement repertoire is crucial for engaging in physical activity and reducing the risk of injury, both of which are central aspects of lifelong health. As a fundamental exercise in both recreational and rehabilitative training regimes, the bipedal squat (SQBp) incorporates many everyday movement patterns. Crucially, SQBp can only be considered functional if the practitioner can meet the coordinative demands. Many factors affect coordinative aspects of an exercise, most notably external load. Since compound movements are assumed to be organized in a synergistic manner, we employed muscle synergy analysis to examine differences in muscle synergy properties between various external load levels during SQBp. METHODS Ten healthy male recreational athletes were enrolled in the present study. Each participant performed three sets of ten SQBp on a smith machine at three submaximal load levels (50%, 62.5%, and 75% of 3 repetition maximum) across three non-consecutive days. Muscle activity was recorded from 12 prime movers of SQBp by way of electromyography (EMG). Muscle synergies were analyzed in terms of temporal activation patterns, i.e., waveform, as well as the relative input of each muscle into individual synergies, i.e., weight contribution. RESULTS Waveforms of muscle synergies did not differ between loads. Weight contributions showed significant differences between load levels, albeit only for the gastrocnemius muscle in a single synergy. CONCLUSION Taken together, our results imply mostly stable spatiotemporal composition of muscle activity during SQBp, underlining the importance of technical competence during compound movement performance in athletic and rehabilitative settings.

Abstract
Pedaling is a physical exercise practiced with either the upper or the lower limbs. Muscle coordination during these exercises has been previously studied using electromyography and synergy analysis, and three to four synergies have been identified for the lower and upper limbs. The question of synergy adaptabilities has not been investigated during pedaling with the upper limbs, and the impact of various modalities is yet not known. This study investigates the effect of pedal type (either clipped/gripped or flat) on the torque performance and the synergy in both upper and lower limbs. Torques applied by six participants while pedaling at 30% of their maximal power have been recorded for both upper and lower limbs. Electromyographic data of 11 muscles on the upper limbs and 11 muscles on the lower limbs have been recorded and synergies extracted and compared between pedal types. Results showed that the torques were not modified by the pedal types for the lower limbs while a deep adaptation is observable for the upper limbs. Participants indeed used the additional holding possibility by pulling the pedals on top of the pushing action. Synergies were accordingly modified for upper limbs while they remain stable for the lower limbs. In both limbs, the synergies showed a good reproducibility even if larger variabilities were observed for the upper limbs. This pilot study highlights the adaptability of muscle synergies according to the condition of movement execution, especially observed for the upper limbs, and can bring some new insights for the rehabilitation exercises.

Abstract
Sensor-based assessments in medical practice and rehabilitation include the measurement of physiological signals such as EEG, EMG, ECG, heart rate, and NIRS, and the recording of movement kinematics and interaction forces. Such measurements are commonly employed in clinics with the aim of assessing patients' pathologies, but so far some of them have found full exploitation mainly for research purposes. In fact, even though the data they allow to gather may shed light on physiopathology and mechanisms underlying motor recovery in rehabilitation, their practical use in the clinical environment is mainly devoted to research studies, with a very reduced impact on clinical practice. This is especially the case for muscle synergies, a well-known method for the evaluation of motor control in neuroscience based on multichannel EMG recordings. In this paper, considering neuromotor rehabilitation as one of the most important scenarios for exploiting novel methods to assess motor control, the main challenges and future perspectives for the standard clinical adoption of muscle synergy analysis are reported and critically discussed.

Abstract
Neural control of movement has to overcome the problem of redundancy in the multidimensional musculoskeletal system. The problem can be solved by reducing the dimensionality of the control space of motor commands, i.e., through muscle synergies or motor primitives. Evidence for this solution exists, multiple studies have obtained muscle synergies using decomposition methods. These synergies vary across different workspaces and are present in both dominant and non-dominant limbs. Here we explore the dimensionality of control space by examining muscle activity patterns across reaching movements in different directions starting from different postures performed bilaterally by healthy individuals. We further explore the effect of biomechanical constraints on the dimensionality of control space. We are building on top of prior work showing that muscle activity profiles can be explained by applied moments about the limb joints that reflect the biomechanical constraints. These muscle torques derived from motion capture represent the combined actions of muscle contractions that are under the control of the nervous system. Here we test the generalizability of the relationship between muscle torques and muscle activity profiles across different starting positions and between limbs. We also test a hypothesis that the dimensionality of control space is shaped by biomechanical constraints. We used principal component analysis to evaluate the contribution of individual muscles to producing muscle torques across different workspaces and in both dominant and non-dominant limbs. Results generalize and support the hypothesis. We show that the muscle torques that support the limb against gravity are produced by more consistent combinations of muscle co-contraction than those that produce propulsion. This effect was the strongest in the non-dominant arm moving in the lateral workspace on one side of the body.

Abstract
Do motor patterns of object lifting movements change as a result of ageing? Here we propose a methodology for the characterization of these motor patterns across individuals of different age groups. Specifically, we employ a bimanual grasp-lift-replace protocol with younger and older adults and combine measurements of muscle activity with grip and load forces to provide a window into the motor strategies supporting effective object lifts. We introduce a tensor decomposition to identify patterns of muscle activity and grip-load force ratios while also characterizing their temporal profiles and relative activation across object weights and participants of different age groups. We then probe age-induced changes in these components. A classification analysis reveals three motor components that are differentially recruited between the two age groups. Linear regression analyses further show that advanced age and poorer manual dexterity can be predicted by the coupled activation of forearm and hand muscles which is associated with high levels of grip force. Our findings suggest that ageing may induce stronger muscle couplings in distal aspects of the upper limbs, and a less economic grasping strategy to overcome age-related decline in manual dexterity.

Abstract
Recently, markerless tracking systems, such as RGB-Depth cameras, have spread to overcome some of the limitations of the gold standard marker-based tracking systems. Although these systems are valuable substitutes for human motion analysis, as they guarantee higher flexibility, faster setup time and lower costs, their tracking accuracy is lower with respect to marker-based systems. Many studies quantified the error made by markerless systems in terms of body segment length estimation, articular angles, and biomechanics, concluding that they are appropriate for many clinical applications related to motion analysis. We propose an innovative approach to compare a markerless tracking system (Kinect V2) with a gold standard marker-based system (Vicon), based on motor control assessment. We quantified kinematic synergies from the tracking data of fifteen participants performing multi-directional upper limb movements. Kinematic synergy analysis decomposes the kinematic data into a reduced set of motor primitives that describe how the central nervous system coordinates motion at spatial and temporal level. Synergies were extracted with the recently released mixed-matrix factorization algorithm. Four synergies were extracted from both marker-based and markerless datasets and synergies were grouped in 6 clusters for each dataset. Cosine similarity in each cluster was ⩾0.60 in both systems, showing good consistency of synergies. Good matching was found between synergies extracted from markerless and from marker-based data, with a cosine similarity between matched synergies ⩾0.60 in 5 out 6 synergies. These results showed that the markerless sensor can be feasible for kinematic synergy analysis for gross movements, as it correctly estimates the number of synergies and in most cases also their spatial and temporal organization.

Abstract
Vertebrates possess a biomechanical structure with redundant muscles, enabling adaptability in uncertain and complex environments. Harnessing this inspiration, musculoskeletal systems offer advantages like variable stiffness and resilience to actuator failure and fatigue. Despite their potential, the complex structure presents modelling challenges that are difficult to explicitly formulate and control. This difficulty arises from the need for comprehensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, including details such as muscle arrangement, and fully accessible muscle and joint states. Whilst existing model-free methods do not need explicit formulations, they also underutilise the benefits of muscle redundancy. Consequently, they necessitate retraining in the event of muscle failure and require manual tuning of parameters to control joint stiffness limiting their applications under unknown payloads. Presented here is a model-free local inverse statics controller for musculoskeletal systems, employing a feedforward neural network trained on motor babbling data. Experiments with a musculoskeletal leg model showcase the controller's adaptability to complex structures, including mono and bi-articulate muscles. The controller can compensate for changes such as weight variations, muscle failures, and environmental interactions, retaining reasonable accuracy without the need for any additional retraining.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A new direction in the study of motor control was opened about two decades ago with the introduction of a model for the generation of motor commands as combination of muscle synergies. Muscle synergies provide a simple yet quantitative framework for analyzing the hierarchical and modular architecture of the human motor system. However, to gain insights on the functional role of muscle synergies, they should be related to the task space. The recently introduced mixed-matrix factorization (MMF) algorithm extends the standard approach for synergy extraction based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) allowing to factorize data constituted by a mixture of non-negative variables (e.g. EMGs) and unconstrained variables (e.g. kinematics, naturally including both positive and negative values). The kinematic-muscular synergies identified by MMF provide a direct link between muscle synergies and the task space. In this contribution, we support the adoption of MMF through a Matlab toolbox for the extraction of kinematic-muscular synergies and a set of practical guidelines to allow biomedical researchers and clinicians to exploit the potential of this novel approach. METHODS MMF is implemented in the SynergyAnalyzer toolbox using an object-oriented approach. In addition to the MMF algorithm, the toolbox includes standard methods for synergy extraction (NMF and PCA), as well as methods for pre-processing EMG and kinematic data, and for plotting data and synergies. RESULTS As an example of MMF application, kinematic-muscular synergies were extracted from EMG and kinematic data collected during reaching movements towards 8 targets on the sagittal plane. Instructions and command lines to achieve such results are illustrated in detail. The toolbox has been released as an open-source software on GitHub under the GNU General Public License. CONCLUSIONS Thanks to its ease of use and adaptability to a variety of datasets, SynergyAnalyzer will facilitate the adoption of MMF to extract kinematic-muscular synergies from mixed EMG and kinematic data, a useful approach in biomedical research to better understand and characterize the functional role of muscle synergies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human locomotion involves the coordinated activation of a finite set of modules, known as muscle synergy, which represent the motor control strategy of the central nervous system. However, most prior studies have focused on isolated muscle activation, overlooking the modular organization of motor behavior. Therefore, to enhance comprehension of muscle coordination dynamics during multi-joint movements in chronic ankle instability (CAI), exploring muscle synergies during landing in CAI patients is imperative. METHODS A total of 22 patients with unilateral CAI and 22 healthy participants were recruited for this research. We employed a recursive model for second-order differential equations to process electromyographic (EMG) data after filtering preprocessing, generating the muscle activation matrix, which was subsequently inputted into the non-negative matrix factorization model for extraction of the muscle synergy. Muscle synergies were classified utilizing the K-means clustering algorithm and Pearson correlation coefficients. Statistical parameter mapping (SPM) was employed for temporal modular parameter analyses. RESULTS Four muscle synergies were identified in both the CAI and healthy groups. In Synergy 1, only the gluteus maximus showed significantly higher relative weight in CAI compared to healthy controls (p = 0.0035). Synergy 2 showed significantly higher relative weights for the vastus lateralis in the healthy group compared to CAI (p = 0.018), while in Synergy 4, CAI demonstrated significantly higher relative weights of the vastus lateralis compared to healthy controls (p = 0.030). Furthermore, in Synergy 2, the CAI group exhibited higher weights of the tibialis anterior compared to the healthy group (p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS The study suggested that patients with CAI exhibit a comparable modular organizational framework to the healthy group. Investigation of amplitude adjustments within the synergy spatial module shed light on the adaptive strategies employed by the tibialis anterior and gluteus maximus muscles to optimize control strategies during landing in patients with CAI. Variances in the muscle-specific weights of the vastus lateralis across movement modules reveal novel biomechanical adaptations in CAI, offering valuable insights for refining rehabilitation protocols.

Abstract
Introduction: Surgical planning and custom prosthesis design for pelvic cancer patients are challenging due to the unique clinical characteristics of each patient and the significant amount of pelvic bone and hip musculature often removed. Limb-sparing internal hemipelvectomy surgery with custom prosthesis reconstruction has become a viable option for this patient population. However, little is known about how post-surgery walking function and neural control change from pre-surgery conditions. Methods: This case study combined comprehensive walking data (video motion capture, ground reaction, and electromyography) with personalized neuromusculoskeletal computer models to provide a thorough assessment of pre- to post-surgery changes in walking function (ground reactions, joint motions, and joint moments) and neural control (muscle synergies) for a single pelvic sarcoma patient who received internal hemipelvectomy surgery with custom prosthesis reconstruction. Pre- and post-surgery walking function and neural control were quantified using pre- and post-surgery neuromusculoskeletal models, respectively, whose pelvic anatomy, joint functional axes, muscle-tendon properties, and muscle synergy controls were personalized using the participant's pre-and post-surgery walking and imaging data. For the post-surgery model, virtual surgery was performed to emulate the implemented surgical decisions, including removal of hip muscles and implantation of a custom prosthesis with total hip replacement. Results: The participant's post-surgery walking function was marked by a slower self-selected walking speed coupled with several compensatory mechanisms necessitated by lost or impaired hip muscle function, while the participant's post-surgery neural control demonstrated a dramatic change in coordination strategy (as evidenced by modified time-invariant synergy vectors) with little change in recruitment timing (as evidenced by conserved time-varying synergy activations). Furthermore, the participant's post-surgery muscle activations were fitted accurately using his pre-surgery synergy activations but fitted poorly using his pre-surgery synergy vectors. Discussion: These results provide valuable information about which aspects of post-surgery walking function could potentially be improved through modifications to surgical decisions, custom prosthesis design, or rehabilitation protocol, as well as how computational simulations could be formulated to predict post-surgery walking function reliably given a patient's pre-surgery walking data and the planned surgical decisions and custom prosthesis design.

Abstract
Background: To observe the activation strategies of the ankle muscles using surface electromyography (sEMG) during single-leg standing (SLS) and both-leg standing (BLS) on flat ground (FG), soft mat (SM), and BOSU ball (BB) surfaces. Methods: Thirty healthy young adults participated in the study. The muscle activities of the tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius medial (GM) were measured on the three surfaces during SLS and BLS. Electromyographic evaluations of the TA and GM were recorded during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC). Muscle activation was evaluated using MVIC%, and muscle co-contraction was evaluated using the co-contraction index (CI). Results: A statistically significant increase was observed in the MVIC% of the TA, GM, and CI on the three surfaces during SLS compared to BLS, except for the comparison of CI on BB between SLS and BLS (t = -1.35, p = 0.19). The MVIC% of the TA and GM during SLS and BLS on BB was significantly increased in comparison with FG and SM. The CI during BLS on BB increased compared to FG (t = 3.19, p < 0.01) and SM (t = 4.64, p < 0.01). The CI during BLS on SM (t = -1.46, p = 0.15) decreased when compared to FG but without statistical significance. Conclusions: SLS and unstable surfaces can induce greater muscle activation, and SLS can have a greater influence on ankle muscles.

Abstract
Quantitative assessment of upper limb motor function aids therapists in providing appropriate rehabilitation strategies, which plays an essential role in post-stroke rehabilitation. Traditional assessments, relying on clinical scales or kinematic metrics, often involve subjective scores or are influenced by compensatory strategies. Recently, the use of muscle synergies, representing simplified neuromuscular control, has emerged as a promising approach for post-stroke assessment. In general, muscle synergies are decomposed into two components: synergy vectors and synergy activation. Synergy vectors represent the relative weighting of each muscle within each synergy, that is muscle coordination; synergy activation represents the recruitment of the muscle synergy over time, that is muscle activation strength. Both components are vital for adequately assessing patients' motor function. Therefore, we integrate the spatial domain and temporal domain features extracted from synergy vectors and synergy activation, constructing a multi-domain assessment system using a Random Forest classifier, which may provide great qualitative classification accuracy. Furthermore, a novel functional score is generated from the probabilities belonging to the pathological group. Finally, A study involving ten healthy subjects and ten post-stroke patients validates the proposed method. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy was enhanced to 98.56% by fusing the characteristics derived from different domains, which was higher than that based on spatial domain (94.90%) and temporal domain (91.08%), respectively. Furthermore, the assessment score generated by multi-domain fusion framework exhibited a significant correlation with the clinical score. These promising results show the potential of applying the proposed method to clinical assessments for post-stroke patients.

Abstract
Muscle synergy has been widely acknowledged as a possible strategy of neuromotor control, but current research has ignored the potential inhibitory components in muscle synergies. Our study aims to identify and characterize the inhibitory components within motor modules derived from electromyography (EMG), investigate the impact of aging and motor expertise on these components, and better understand the nervous system's adaptions to varying task demands. We utilized a rectified latent variable model (RLVM) to factorize motor modules with inhibitory components from EMG signals recorded from ten expert pianists when they played scales and pieces at different tempo-force combinations. We found that older participants showed a higher proportion of inhibitory components compared with the younger group. Senior experts had a higher proportion of inhibitory components on the left hand, and most inhibitory components became less negative with increased tempo or decreased force. Our results demonstrated that the inhibitory components in muscle synergies could be shaped by aging and expertise, and also took part in motor control for adapting to different conditions in complex tasks.

Abstract
In certain neurological disorders such as stroke, the impairment of upper limb function significantly impacts daily life quality and necessitates enhanced neurological control. This poses a formidable challenge in the realm of rehabilitation due to its intricate nature. Moreover, the plasticity of muscle synergy proves advantageous in assessing the enhancement of motor function among stroke patients pre and post rehabilitation training intervention, owing to the modular control strategy of central nervous system. It also facilitates the investigation of long-term alterations in remodeling of muscle functional performance among patients undergoing clinical rehabilitation, aiming to establish correlations between changes in muscle synergies and stroke characteristics such as type, stage, and sites. In this study, a three-week rehabilitation monitoring experiment was conducted to assess the motor function of stroke patients at different stages of rehabilitation based on muscle synergy performance. Additionally, we aimed to investigate the correlation between clinical scale scores, rehabilitation stages, and synergy performance in order to provide a more comprehensive understanding of stroke patient recovery. The results of 7 healthy controls and 16 stroke patients showed that high-functioning patients were superior to low-functioning patients in terms of motor function plasticity towards healthy individuals. Moreover, there was a high positive correlation between muscle synergies and clinical scale scores in high-functioning patients, and the significance gradually emerged with treatment, highlighting the potential of muscle synergy plasticity as a valuable tool for monitoring rehabilitation progress. The potential of this study was also demonstrated for elucidating the physiological mechanisms underlying motor function reconstruction within the central nervous system, which is expected to promote the further application of muscle synergy in clinical assessment.

Abstract
A remarkable demonstration of the flexibility of mammalian motor systems is primates' ability to learn to control brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). This constitutes a completely novel motor behavior, yet primates are capable of learning to control BCIs under a wide range of conditions. BCIs with carefully calibrated decoders, for example, can be learned with only minutes to hours of practice. With a few weeks of practice, even BCIs with randomly constructed decoders can be learned. What are the biological substrates of this learning process? Here, we develop a theory based on a re-aiming strategy, whereby learning operates within a low-dimensional subspace of task-relevant inputs driving the local population of recorded neurons. Through comprehensive numerical and formal analysis, we demonstrate that this theory can provide a unifying explanation for disparate phenomena previously reported in three different BCI learning tasks, and we derive a novel experimental prediction that we verify with previously published data. By explicitly modeling the underlying neural circuitry, the theory reveals an interpretation of these phenomena in terms of biological constraints on neural activity.

Abstract
Sensory feedback is integral for contextually appropriate motor output, yet the neural circuits responsible remain elusive. Here, we pinpoint the medial deep dorsal horn of the mouse spinal cord as a convergence point for proprioceptive and cutaneous input. Within this region, we identify a population of tonically active glycinergic inhibitory neurons expressing parvalbumin. Using anatomy and electrophysiology, we demonstrate that deep dorsal horn parvalbumin-expressing interneuron (dPV) activity is shaped by convergent proprioceptive, cutaneous, and descending input. Selectively targeting spinal dPVs, we reveal their widespread ipsilateral inhibition onto pre-motor and motor networks and demonstrate their role in gating sensory-evoked muscle activity using electromyography (EMG) recordings. dPV ablation altered limb kinematics and step-cycle timing during treadmill locomotion and reduced the transitions between sub-movements during spontaneous behavior. These findings reveal a circuit basis by which sensory convergence onto dorsal horn inhibitory neurons modulates motor output to facilitate smooth movement and context-appropriate transitions.

Abstract
There are numerous studies comparing young and old adults in terms of muscle coordination in standard tasks (e.g., walking, reaching) and small variations of them. These tasks might hide differences: individuals would converge to similar behavior as they practice these throughout life. Also, we are unaware of studies that considered the muscle recruitment nested dynamics. For this reason, our study evaluated how young and old women coordinate and control the movement system while performing an unusual redundant motor control task through the network physiology approach. We acquired electromyographic signals from nine leg muscles of the dominant and non-dominant limbs during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (knee extension and flexion) and co-contraction bouts. Our results showed that young participants presented higher peak torque output, with similar EMG variability, compared to older participants. Considering firing rate frequencies, old and young women demonstrated different traits for network clustering and efficiency for the task. Age seems to affect muscle coordination at higher frequencies, even with a similar number of muscle synergies, indicating that younger women might have more integrated synergies than older women. The findings also point to differential muscle coordination adaptability.

Abstract
Muscle synergies as functional low-dimensional building blocks of the neuromotor system regulate the activation patterns of muscle groups in a modular structure during locomotion. The purpose of the current study was to explore how older adults organize locomotor muscle synergies to counteract unpredictable and predictable gait perturbations during the perturbed steps and the recovery steps. Sixty-three healthy older adults (71.2±5.2 years) participated in the study. Mediolateral and anteroposterior unpredictable and predictable perturbations during walking were introduced using a treadmill. Muscle synergies were extracted from the electromyographic activity of 13 lower limb muscles using Gaussian non-negative matrix factorization. The four basic synergies responsible for unperturbed walking (weight acceptance, propulsion, early swing and late swing) were preserved in all applied gait perturbations, yet their temporal recruitment and muscle contribution in each synergy were modified (P<0.05). These modifications were observed for up to four recovery steps and were more pronounced (P<0.05) following unpredictable perturbations. The recruitment of the four basic walking synergies in the perturbed and recovery gait cycles indicates a robust neuromotor control of locomotion by using activation patterns of a few and well-known muscle synergies with specific adjustments within the synergies. The selection of pre-existing muscle synergies while adjusting the time of their recruitment during challenging locomotor conditions may improve the effectiveness to deal with perturbations and promote the transfer of adaptation between different kinds of perturbations.

Abstract
Muscle synergies have been hypothesized as specific predefined motor primitives that the central nervous system can reduce the complexity of motor control by using them, but how these are expressed in brain activity is ambiguous yet. The main purpose of this paper is to develop synergy-based neural decoding of motor primitives, so for the first time, brain activity and muscle synergy map of the upper extremity was investigated in the activity of daily living movements. To find the relationship between brain activities and muscle synergies, electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) signals were acquired simultaneously during activities of daily living. To extract the maximum correlation of neural commands with muscle synergies, application of a combined partial least squares and canonical correlation analysis (PLS-CCA) method was proposed. The Elman neural network was used to decode the relationship between extracted motor commands and muscle synergies. The performance of proposed method was evaluated with tenfold cross-validation and muscle synergy estimation of brain activity with R, VAF, and MSE of 84 ± 2.6%, 70 ± 4.7%, and 0.00011 ± 0.00002 were quantified respectively. Furthermore, the similarity between actual and reconstructed muscle activations was achieved more than 92% for correlation coefficient. To compare with the existing methods, our results showed significantly more accuracy of the model performance. Our results confirm that use of the expression of muscle synergies in brain activity can estimate the neural decoding performance for motor control that can be used to develop neurorehabilitation tools such as neuroprosthesis.

Abstract
Four to five muscle synergies account for children's locomotion and appear to be consistent across alterations in speed and slopes. Backpack carriage induces alterations in gait kinematics in healthy children, raising questions regarding the clinical consequences related to orthopedic and neurological diseases and ergonomics. However, to support clinical decisions and characterize backpack carriage, muscle synergies can help with understanding the alterations induced in this condition at the motor control level. In this study, we investigated how children adjust the recruitment of motor patterns during locomotion, when greater muscular demands are required (backpack carriage). Twenty healthy male children underwent an instrumental gait analysis and muscle synergies extraction during three walking conditions: self-selected, fast and load conditions. In the fast condition, a reduction in the number of synergies (three to four) was needed for reconstructing the EMG signal with the same accuracy as in the other conditions (three to five). Synergies were grouped in only four clusters in the fast condition, while five clusters were needed for the self-selected condition. The right number of clusters was not clearly identified in the load condition. Speed and backpack carriage altered nearly every spatial-temporal parameter of gait, whereas kinematic alterations reflected mainly hip and pelvis adaptations. Although the synergistic patterns were consistent across conditions, indicating a similar motor pattern in different conditions, the fast condition required fewer synergies for reconstructing the EMG signal with the same level of accuracy.

Abstract
The inverse kinematics (IK) problem addresses how both humans and robotic systems coordinate movement to resolve redundancy, as in the case of arm reaching where more degrees of freedom are available at the joint versus hand level. This work focuses on which coordinate frames best represent human movements, enabling the motor system to solve the IK problem in the presence of kinematic redundancies. We used a multi-dimensional sparse source separation method to derive sets of basis (or source) functions for both the task and joint spaces, with joint space represented by either absolute or anatomical joint angles. We assessed the similarities between joint and task sources in each of these joint representations, finding that the time-dependent profiles of the absolute reference frame's sources show greater similarity to corresponding sources in the task space. This result was found to be statistically significant. Our analysis suggests that the nervous system represents multi-joint arm movements using a limited number of basis functions, allowing for simple transformations between task and joint spaces. Additionally, joint space seems to be represented in an absolute reference frame to simplify the IK transformations, given redundancies. Further studies will assess this finding's generalizability and implications for neural control of movement.

Abstract
Complex locomotor patterns are generated by combination of muscle synergies. How genetic processes, early sensorimotor experiences, and the developmental dynamics of neuronal circuits contribute to the expression of muscle synergies remains elusive. We shed light on the factors that influence development of muscle synergies by studying subjects with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA, types II/IIIa), a disorder associated with degeneration and deafferentation of motoneurons and possibly motor cortical and cerebellar abnormalities, from which the afflicted would have atypical sensorimotor histories around typical walking onset. Muscle synergies of children with SMA were identified from electromyographic signals recorded during active-assisted leg motions or walking, and compared with those of age-matched controls. We found that the earlier the SMA onset age, the more different the SMA synergies were from the normative. These alterations could not just be explained by the different degrees of uneven motoneuronal losses across muscles. The SMA-specific synergies had activations in muscles from multiple limb compartments, a finding reminiscent of the neonatal synergies of typically developing infants. Overall, while the synergies shared between SMA and control subjects may reflect components of a core modular infrastructure determined early in life, the SMA-specific synergies may be developmentally immature synergies that arise from inadequate activity-dependent interneuronal sculpting due to abnormal sensorimotor experience and other factors. Other mechanisms including SMA-induced intraspinal changes and altered cortical-spinal interactions may also contribute to synergy changes. Our interpretation highlights the roles of the sensory and descending systems to the typical and abnormal development of locomotor modules.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This is likely the first report of locomotor muscle synergies of children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a subject group with atypical developmental sensorimotor experience. We found that the earlier the SMA onset age, the more the subjects' synergies deviated from those of age-matched controls. This result suggests contributions of the sensory/corticospinal activities to the typical expression of locomotor modules, and how their disruptions during a critical period of development may lead to abnormal motor modules.

Abstract
Functional corticomuscular coupling (FCMC) probes multi-level information communication in the sensorimotor system. The canonical Coherence (caCOH) method has been leveraged to measure the FCMC between two multivariate signals within the single scale. In this paper, we propose the concept of multiscale canonical Coherence (MS-caCOH) to disentangle complex multi-layer information and extract coupling features in multivariate spaces from multiple scales. Then, we verified the reliability and effectiveness of MS-caCOH on two types of data sets, i.e., a synthetic multivariate data set and a real-world multivariate data set. Our simulation results showed that compared with caCOH, MS-caCOH enhanced coupling detection and achieved lower pattern recovery errors at multiple frequency scales. Further analysis on experimental data demonstrated that the proposed MS-caCOH method could also capture detailed multiscale spatial-frequency characteristics. This study leverages the multiscale analysis framework and multivariate method to give a new insight into corticomuscular coupling analysis.

Abstract
"Yips" are involuntary movements that interfere with the automatic execution of sports movements. However, how the coordination among the various muscles necessary for sports movements is impaired in athletes with yips remains to be fully understood. This study aimed to assess whether muscle synergy analysis through non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) could identify impaired spatiotemporal muscle coordination in baseball players with throwing yips. Twenty-two college baseball players, including 12 with and 10 without yips symptoms participated in the study. Electromyographic activity was recorded from 13 ipsilateral upper extremity muscles during full-effort throwing. Muscle synergies were extracted through NMF. Cluster analysis was conducted to identify any common spatiotemporal patterns of muscle synergies in players with yips. Whether individual players with yips showed deviations in spatiotemporal patterns of muscle synergies compared with control players was also investigated. Four muscle synergies were extracted for each player, but none were specific to the yips group. However, a more detailed analysis of individual players revealed that two of the three players who presented dystonic symptoms during the experiment exhibited specific patterns that differed from those in control players. By contrast, each player whose symptoms were not reproduced during the experiment presented spatiotemporal patterns of muscle synergies similar to those of the control group. The results of this study indicate no common spatiotemporal pattern of muscle synergies specific to the yips group. Furthermore, these results suggest that the spatiotemporal pattern of muscle synergies in baseball throwing motion is not impaired in situations where symptoms are not reproduced even if the players have yips symptoms. However, muscle synergy analysis can identify the characteristics of muscle coordination of players who exhibit dystonic movements. These findings can be useful in developing personalized therapeutic strategies based on individual characteristics of yips symptoms.

Abstract
Background Identifying altered trunk control is critical for treating extension-related low back pain (ERLBP), a common subgroup classified by clinical manifestations. The changed coordination of trunk muscles within this group during particular trunk tasks is still not clearly understood. Objectives The objective of this study is to investigate trunk muscle coordination during 11 trunk movement and stability tasks in individuals with ERLBP compared to non-low back pain (LBP) participants. Methods Thirteen individuals with ERLBP and non-LBP performed 11 trunk movement and stability tasks. We recorded the electromyographic activities of six back and abdominal muscles bilaterally. Trunk muscle coordination was assessed using the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) method to identify trunk muscle synergies. Results The number of synergies in the ERLBP group during the cross-extension and backward bend tasks was significantly higher than in the non-LBP group (p<0.05). The cluster analysis identified the two trunk synergies for each task with strikingly similar muscle activation patterns between groups. In contrast, the ERLBP group exhibited additional trunk muscle synergies that were not identified in the non-LBP group. The number of synergies in the other tasks did not differ between groups (p>0.05). Conclusion Individuals with ERLBP presented directionally specific alterations in trunk muscle synergies that were considered as increased coactivations of multiple trunk muscles. These altered patterns may contribute to the excessive stabilization of and the high frequency of hyperextension in the spine associated with the development and persistence of ERLBP.

Abstract
The correction of postural weaknesses through the better positioning of the pelvis is an important approach in sports therapy and physiotherapy. The pelvic position in the sagittal plane is largely dependent on the muscular balance of the ventral and dorsal muscle groups. The aim of this exploratory study was to examine whether healthy persons use similar muscular activation patterns to correct their pelvic position or whether there are different motor strategies. The following muscles were recorded in 41 persons using surface electromyography (EMG): M. trapezius pars ascendens, M. erector spinae pars lumbalis, M. gluteus maximus, M. biceps femoris, M. rectus abdominis, and M. obliquus externus. The participants performed 10 voluntary pelvic movements (retroversion of the pelvis). The anterior pelvic tilt was measured videographically via marker points on the anterior and posterior superior iliac spine. The EMG data were further processed and normalized to the maximum voluntary contraction. A linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between changes in the pelvic tilt and muscle activities. Subsequently, a Ward clustering analysis was applied to detect potential muscle activation patterns. The differences between the clusters and the pelvic tilt were examined using ANOVA. Cluster analysis revealed the presence of four clusters with different muscle activation patterns in which the abdominal muscles and dorsal muscle groups were differently involved. However, the gluteus maximus muscle was involved in every activation pattern. It also had the strongest correlation with the changes in pelvic tilt. Different individual muscle patterns are used by different persons to correct pelvic posture, with the gluteus maximus muscle apparently playing the most important role. This can be important for therapy, as different muscle strategies should be trained depending on the individually preferred motor patterns.

Abstract
Introduction Walking in adults relies on a small number of modules, reducing the number of degrees of freedom that needs to be regulated by the central nervous system (CNS). While walking in toddlers seems to also involve a small number of modules when considering averaged or single-step data, toddlers produce a high amount of variability across strides, and the extent to which this variability interacts with modularity remains unclear. Methods Electromyographic activity from 10 bilateral lower limb muscles was recorded in both adults (n = 12) and toddlers (n = 12) over 8 gait cycles. Toddlers were recorded while walking independently and while being supported by an adult. This condition was implemented to assess if motor variability persisted with reduced balance constraints, suggesting a potential central origin rather than reliance on peripheral regulations. We used non-negative matrix factorization to model the underlying modular command with the Space-by-Time Decomposition method, with or without averaging data, and compared the modular organization of toddlers and adults during multiple walking strides. Results Toddlers were more variable in both conditions (i.e. independent walking and supported by an adult) and required significantly more modules to account for their greater stride-by-stride variability. Activations of these modules varied more across strides and were less parsimonious compared to adults, even with diminished balance constraints. Discussion The findings suggest that modular control of locomotion evolves between toddlerhood and adulthood as the organism develops and practices. Adults seem to be able to generate several strides of walking with less modules than toddlers. The persistence of variability in toddlers when balance constraints were lowered suggests a link with the ability to explore rather than with corrective mechanisms. In conclusion, the capacity of new walkers to flexibly activate their motor command suggests a broader range of possible actions, though distinguishing between modular and non-modular inputs remains challenging.

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of gravity on lower limb muscle coordination during pedaling. It explores how pedaling behaviors, kinematics, and muscle activation patterns dynamically adapts to changes in gravity and resistance levels. The experiment was conducted in parabolic flights, simulating microgravity, hypergravity (1.8 g), and normogravity conditions. Participants pedaled on an ergometer with varying resistances. The goal was to identify potential changes in muscle synergies and activation strategies under different gravitational contexts. Results indicate that pedaling cadence adjusted naturally in response to both gravity and resistance changes. Cadence increased with higher gravity and decreased with higher resistance levels. Muscular activities were characterized by two synergies representing pull and push phases of pedaling. The timing of synergy activation was influenced by gravity, with a delay in activation observed in microgravity compared to other conditions. Despite these changes, the velocity profile of pedaling remained stable across gravity conditions. The findings strongly suggest that the CNS dynamically manages the shift in body weight by finely tuning muscular coordination, thereby ensuring the maintenance of a stable motor output. Furthermore, electromyography analysis suggest that neuromuscular discharge frequencies were not affected by gravity changes. This implies that the types of muscle fibers recruited during exercise in modified gravity are similar to those used in normogravity. This research has contributed to a better understanding of how the human locomotor system responds to varying gravitational conditions, shedding light on the potential mechanisms underlying astronauts' gait changes upon returning from space missions.

Abstract
Humans substantially outperform robotic systems in tasks that require physical interaction, despite seemingly inferior muscle bandwidth and slow neural information transmission. The control strategies that enable this performance remain poorly understood. To bridge that gap, this study examined kinematically constrained motion as an intermediate step between the widely studied unconstrained motions and sparsely studied physical interactions. Subjects turned a horizontal planar crank in two directions (clockwise and counterclockwise) at three constant target speeds (fast, medium, and very slow) as instructed via visual display. With the hand constrained to move in a circle, nonzero forces against the constraint were measured. This experiment exposed two observations that could not result from mechanics alone but may be attributed to neural control composed of dynamic primitives. A plausible mathematical model of interactive dynamics (mechanical impedance) was assumed and used to "subtract" peripheral neuromechanics. This method revealed a summary of the underlying neural control in terms of motion, a zero-force trajectory. The estimated zero-force trajectories were approximately elliptical and their orientation differed significantly with turning direction; that is consistent with control using oscillations to generate an elliptical zero-force trajectory. However, for periods longer than 2-5 s, motion can no longer be perceived or executed as periodic. Instead, it decomposes into a sequence of submovements, manifesting as increased variability. These quantifiable performance limitations support the hypothesis that humans simplify this constrained-motion task by exploiting at least three primitive dynamic actions: oscillations, submovements, and mechanical impedance.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Control using primitive dynamic actions may explain why human performance is superior to robots despite seemingly inferior "wetware"; however, this also implies limitations. For a crank-turning task, this work quantified two such informative limitations. Force was exerted even though it produced no mechanical work, the underlying zero-force trajectory was roughly elliptical, and its orientation differed with turning direction, evidence of oscillatory control. At slow speeds, speed variability increased substantially, indicating intermittent control via submovements.

Abstract
Voluntary motor control is thought to be predicated on the ability to efficiently integrate and process somatosensory afferent information. However, current approaches in the field of motor control have not factored in objective markers of how the brain tracks incoming somatosensory information. Here, we asked whether motor performance relates to such markers obtained with an analysis of the coupling between peripheral kinematics and cortical oscillations during continuous movements, best known as corticokinematic coherence (CKC). Motor performance was evaluated by measuring both gross and fine motor skills using the Box and Blocks Test (BBT) and the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT), respectively, and with a biomechanics measure of coordination. A total of 61 participants completed the BBT, while equipped with electroencephalography and electromyography, and the PPT. We evaluated CKC, from the signals collected during the BBT, as the coherence between movement rhythmicity and brain activity, and coordination as the cross-correlation between muscle activity. CKC at movements' first harmonic was positively associated with BBT scores (r = 0.41, p = 0.001), and alone showed no relationship with PPT scores (r = 0.07, p = 0.60), but in synergy with BBT scores, participants with lower PPT scores had higher CKC than expected based on their BBT score. Coordination was not associated with motor performance or CKC (p > 0.05). These findings demonstrate that cortical somatosensory processing in the form of strengthened brain-peripheral coupling is specifically associated with better gross motor skills and thus may be considered as a valuable addition to classical tests of proprioception acuity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Motor control issues are common for people with intellectual disabilities (PWID), resulting in difficulties with basic activities of daily living, including eating. Mastication, which is crucial for digestion and overall health, is poorly understood in this population. PWID shows frailty similar to older people, highlighting the importance of comparing masticatory motor control with older adults. This study compared the neuromuscular control of the masticatory muscles in middle-aged, PWID and older adults. METHODS A cross-sectional analytical design was used. During the mastication task of a carrot piece (2 cm in diameter and weighing 0.5 g), surface electromyography was used to record muscle activity patterns from the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to assess neuromuscular control. A z-score normalisation of the first component's variance from PCA to identify those individuals with altered neuromuscular control. A mixed ANOVA was performed to assess the interaction between principal components, groups and body composition. RESULTS Thirty PWIDs (aged 35-55 years), middle-aged adults and 32 older adults were recruited. PWID and older adults showed decreased neuromuscular control of the masticatory muscles compared to middle-aged control adults (P < 0.05). PWID had the highest proportion of individuals with altered neuromuscular control of the masticatory muscle (53%) compared to older adults (19%) and middle-aged adults (0%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that PWID and older adults have reduced neuromuscular control compared to middle-aged adults. Notably, a significant proportion of the PWID showed altered masticatory muscle control compared to older adults. Further research is needed to explore the potential benefits of masticatory muscle training for PWID.

Abstract
The energy efficiency theory of human bipedal locomotion has been widely accepted as a neuro-musculoskeletal control method. However, coactivation of agonist and antagonist muscles in the lower limb has been observed during various limb movements, including walking. The emergence of this coactivation cannot be explained solely by the energy efficiency theory and remains a subject of debate. To shed light on this, we investigated the role of muscle coactivations in walking stability using a forward dynamics musculoskeletal simulation combined with neural-network-based gait controllers. Our study revealed that a gait controller with minimal muscle activations had a high probability of falls under challenging gait conditions such as slippery ground and uneven terrain. Lower limb muscle coactivations emerged in the process of gait controller training on slippery ground. Controllers with physiological coactivation levels demonstrated a significantly reduced probability of falls. Our results suggest that achieving stable walking requires muscle coactivations beyond the minimal level of muscle energy. This study implies that coactivations likely emerge to maintain gait stability under challenging conditions, and both coactivation and energy optimization of lower limb muscles should be considered when exploring the foundational control mechanisms of human walking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE For patients with movement disorders, the main clinical focus is on exercise rehabilitation to help recover lost motor function, which is achieved by relevant assisted equipment. The basis for seamless control of the assisted equipment is to achieve accurate inference of the user's movement intentions in the human-machine interface. This study proposed a novel movement intention detection technology for estimating lower limb joint continuous kinematic variables following muscle synergy patterns, to develop applications for more efficient assisted rehabilitation training. METHODS This study recruited 16 healthy males and 16 male patients with symptomatic patellar tendinopathy (VISA-P: 59.1 ± 8.7). The surface electromyography of 12 muscles and lower limb joint kinematic and kinetic data from healthy subjects and patients during step-off landings from 30 cm-high stair steps were collected. We subsequently solved the preprocessed data based on the established recursive model of second-order differential equation to obtain the muscle activation matrix, and then imported it into the non-negative matrix factorization model to obtain the muscle synergy matrix. Finally, the lower limb neuromuscular synergy pattern was then imported into the developed adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system non-linear regression model to estimate the human movement intention during this movement pattern. RESULTS Six muscle synergies were determined to construct the muscle synergy pattern driven ANFIS model. Three fuzzy rules were determined in most estimation cases. Combining the results of the four error indicators across the estimated variables indicates that the current model has excellent estimated performance in estimating lower limb joint movement. The estimation errors between the healthy (Angle: R2=0.98±0.03; Torque: R2=0.96±0.04) and patient (Angle: R2=0.98±0.02; Torque: R2=0.96±0.03) groups are consistent. CONCLUSION The proposed model of this study can accurately and reliably estimate lower limb joint movements, and the effectiveness will also be radiated to the patient group. This revealed that our models also have certain advantages in the recognition of motor intentions in patients with relevant movement disorders. Future work from this study can be focused on sports rehabilitation in the clinical field by achieving more flexible and precise movement control of the lower limb assisted equipment to help the rehabilitation of patients.

Abstract
This article presents a systematic review on wearable robotic devices that use human-in-the-loop optimization (HILO) strategies to improve human-robot interaction. A total of 46 HILO studies were identified and divided into upper and lower limb robotic devices. The main aspects from HILO were identified, reviewed, and classified in four areas: 1) human-machine systems; 2) optimization methods; 3) control strategies; and 4) experimental protocols. A variety of objective functions (physiological, biomechanical, and subjective), optimization strategies, and optimized control parameters configurations used in different control strategies are presented and analyzed. An overview of experimental protocols is provided, including metrics, tasks, and conditions tested. Moreover, the relevance given to training or adaptation periods was explored. We outline an HILO framework that includes current wearable robots, optimization strategies, objective functions, control strategies, and experimental protocols. We conclude by highlighting current research gaps and defining future directions to improve the development of advanced HILO strategies in upper and lower limb wearable robots.

Abstract
In the last two decades, muscle synergies analysis has been commonly used to assess the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying human motor control. Several synergy models and algorithms have been employed for processing the electromyographic (EMG) signal, and it has been shown that the coordination of motor control is characterized by the presence of phasic (movement-related) and tonic (anti-gravity and related to co-contraction) EMG components. Neural substrates indicate that phasic and tonic components have non-homogeneous origin; however, it is still unclear if these components are generated by the same set of synergies or by distinct synergies. This study aims at testing whether phasic and tonic components are generated by distinct phasic and tonic synergies or by the same set of synergies with phasic and tonic activation coefficients. The study also aims at characterizing the differences between the phasic and the tonic synergies. Using a comprehensive mapping of upper-limb point-to-point movements, synergies were extracted from phasic and tonic EMG signal separately, estimating the tonic components with a linear ramp model. The goodness of reconstruction (R2) as a function of the number of synergies was compared, and sets of synergies extracted from each dataset at three R2 threshold levels (0.80, 0.85, 0.90) were retained for further analysis. Then, shared, phasic-specific, and tonic-specific synergies were extracted from the two datasets concatenated. The dimensionality of the synergies shared between the phasic and the tonic datasets was estimated with a bootstrap procedure based on the evaluation of the distribution of principal angles between the subspaces spanned by phasic and tonic synergies due to noise. We found only few shared synergies, indicating that phasic and tonic synergies have in general different structures. To compare consistent differences in synergy composition, shared, phasic-specific, and tonic-specific synergies were clustered separately. Phasic-specific clusters were more numerous than tonic-specific ones, suggesting that they were more differentiated among subjects. The structure of phasic clusters and the higher sparseness indicated that phasic synergies capture specific muscle activation patterns related to the movement while tonic synergies show co-contraction of multiple muscles for joint stabilization and holding postures. These results suggest that in many scenarios phasic and tonic synergies should be extracted separately, especially when performing muscle synergy analysis in patients with abnormal tonic activity and for tuning devices with gravity support.

Abstract
Objective. Intracortical brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) aim to enable individuals with paralysis to control the movement of virtual limbs and robotic arms. Because patients' paralysis prevents training a direct neural activity to limb movement decoder, most iBCIs rely on 'observation-based' decoding in which the patient watches a moving cursor while mentally envisioning making the movement. However, this reliance on observed target motion for decoder development precludes its application to the prediction of unobservable motor output like muscle activity. Here, we ask whether recordings of muscle activity from a surrogate individual performing the same movement as the iBCI patient can be used as target for an iBCI decoder.Approach. We test two possible approaches, each using data from a human iBCI user and a monkey, both performing similar motor actions. In one approach, we trained a decoder to predict the electromyographic (EMG) activity of a monkey from neural signals recorded from a human. We then contrast this to a second approach, based on the hypothesis that the low-dimensional 'latent' neural representations of motor behavior, known to be preserved across time for a given behavior, might also be preserved across individuals. We 'transferred' an EMG decoder trained solely on monkey data to the human iBCI user after using Canonical Correlation Analysis to align the human latent signals to those of the monkey.Main results. We found that both direct and transfer decoding approaches allowed accurate EMG predictions between two monkeys and from a monkey to a human.Significance. Our findings suggest that these latent representations of behavior are consistent across animals and even primate species. These methods are an important initial step in the development of iBCI decoders that generate EMG predictions that could serve as signals for a biomimetic decoder controlling motion and impedance of a prosthetic arm, or even muscle force directly through functional electrical stimulation.

Abstract
Achieving complex behavior in soft-bodied animals is a hard task, because their body morphology is not constrained by a fixed number of jointed elements, as in skeletal animals, and thus the control system has to deal with practically an infinite number of control variables (degrees of freedom). Almost 30 years of research on Octopus vulgaris motor control has revealed that octopuses efficiently control their body with strategies that emerged during the adaptive coevolution of their nervous system and body morphology. In this minireview, we highlight principles of embodied organization that were revealed by studying octopus motor control, and that are used as inspiration for soft robotics. We describe the evolved solutions to the problem, implemented from the lowest level, the muscular system, to the network organization in higher motor control centers of the octopus brain. We show how the higher motor control centers, where the sensory-motor interface lies, can control and coordinate limbs with large degrees of freedom without using body-part maps to represent sensory and motor information, as they do in vertebrates. We demonstrate how this unique control mechanism, which allows efficient control of the body in a large variety of behaviors, is embodied within the animal's body morphology.

Abstract
Extracting muscle synergies from surface electromyographic signals (sEMGs) during exercises has been widely applied to evaluate motor control strategies. This study explores the relationship between upper-limb muscle synergies and the performance of joystick manipulation tasks. Seventy-seven subjects, divided into three classes according to their maneuvering experience, were recruited to perform the left and right reciprocation of the joystick. Based on the motion encoder data, their manipulation performance was evaluated by the mean error, standard deviation, and extreme range of position of the joystick. Meanwhile, sEMG and acceleration signals from the upper limbs corresponding to the entire trial were collected. Muscle synergies were extracted from each subject's sEMG data by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), based on which the synergy coordination index (SCI), which indicates the size of the synergy space and the variability of the center of activity (CoA), evaluated the temporal activation variability. The synergy pattern space and CoA of all participants were calculated within each class to analyze the correlation between the variability of muscle synergies and the manipulation performance metrics. The correlation level of each class was further compared. The experimental results evidenced a positive correlation between manipulation performance and maneuvering experience. Similar muscle synergy patterns were reflected between the three classes and the structure of the muscle synergies showed stability. In the class of rich maneuvering experience, the correlation between manipulation performance metrics and muscle synergy is more significant than in the classes of trainees and newbies, suggesting that long-term training and practicing can improve manipulation performance, stability of synergy compositions, and temporal activation variability but not alter the structure of muscle synergies determined by a specific task. Our approaches and findings could be applied to 1) reduce manipulation errors, 2) assist maneuvering training and evaluation to enhance transportation safety, and 3) design technical support for sports.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most partial hand amputees experience limited wrist movement. The limited rotational wrist movement deteriorates natural upper limb system related to hand use and the usability of the prosthetic hand, which may cause secondary damage to the musculoskeletal system due to overuse of the upper limb affected by repetitive compensatory movement patterns. Nevertheless, partial hand prosthetics, in common, have only been proposed without rotational wrist movement because patients have various hand shapes, and a prosthetic hand should be attached to a narrow space. METHODS We hypothesized that partial hand amputees, when using a prosthetic hand with a wrist rotation module, would achieve natural upper limb movement muscle synergy and motion analysis comparable to a control group. To validate the proposed prototype design with the wrist rotation module and verify our hypothesis, we compared a control group with partial hand amputees wearing hand prostheses, both with and without the wrist rotation module prototype. The study contained muscle synergy analysis through non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) using surface electromyography (sEMG) and motion analyses employing a motion capture system during the reach-to-grasp task. Additionally, we assessed the usability of the prototype design for partial hand amputees using the Jebsen-Taylor hand function test (JHFT). RESULTS The results showed that the number of muscle synergies identified through NMF remained consistent at 3 for both the control group and amputees using a hand prosthesis with a wrist rotation module. In the motion analysis, a statistically significant difference was observed between the control group and the prosthetic hand without the wrist rotation module, indicating the presence of compensatory movements when utilizing a prosthetic hand lacking this module. Furthermore, among the amputees, the JHFT demonstrated a greater improvement in total score when using the prosthetic hand equipped with a wrist rotation module compared to the prosthetic hand without this module. CONCLUSION In conclusion, integrating a wrist rotation module in prosthetic hand designs for partial hand amputees restores natural upper limb movement patterns, reduces compensatory movements, and prevent the secondary musculoskeletal. This highlights the importance of this module in enhancing overall functionality and quality of life.

The Executive Council of the International Society of Biomechanics has initiated and overseen the commemorations of the Society's 50th Anniversary in 2023. This included multiple series of lectures at the ninth World Congress of Biomechanics in 2022 and XXIXth Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics in 2023, all linked to special issues of International Society of Biomechanics' affiliated journals. This special issue of the Journal of Applied Biomechanics is dedicated to the biomechanics of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The reader is encouraged to explore this special issue which comprises 6 papers exploring the current state-of the-art, and future directions and roles for neuromusculoskeletal biomechanics. This editorial presents a very brief history of the science of the neuromusculoskeletal system's 4 main components: the central nervous system, musculotendon units, the musculoskeletal system, and joints, and how they biomechanically integrate to enable an understanding of the generation and control of human movement. This also entails a quick exploration of contemporary neuromusculoskeletal biomechanics and its future with new fields of application.
