Stiffener and staggered-square honeycomb structure design for lobster eye x ray micro pore optics

Lobster eye x ray micro pore optics (MPO) is a novel bionic optical technology with a unique microchannel structure. All square microchannels point to the same spherical center position, providing a wide field of view and high focusing and imaging capabilities. Enhancing the optical performance of MPO has been a significant challenge. This study introduces what we believe is a novel approach using a stiffener and staggered-square honeycomb structure design to enhance the optical properties of the MPO devices. The x ray test results show that the multifiber stiffener design enhances optical quality by approximately 20% during the melt pressing stage. The staggered-square honeycomb structure design reduces channel errors by nearly 67% in the thermal forming and coating stage. Consequently, the angular resolution of the MPO has been significantly enhanced, reducing from 4.25 to 2.68 arc min. This innovative structure design shows promise for enhancing lobster eye optics performance and has potential applications in the related field.

Bed bug control with various dusts: Efficacy comparison between silicon dioxide, diatomaceous earth, and Sommières earth

Bed bugs are considered a major public health problem in industrialized countries. Usually, bed bug infestations are managed using a combination of physical and chemical methods. In recent years, new strategies for bed bug control have emerged, particularly the use of dusts like diatomaceous earth and silicon dioxide. However, in Europe, the use of silicon dioxide is restricted to professional, while diatomaceous earth can be harmful to the lungs. This study aimed to assess bed bug mortality rates associated with Sommières earth, green clay, talc, and sodium bicarbonate compared to silicon dioxide and diatomaceous earth from a pest management company, diatomaceous earth for litter conditioner, and diatomaceous earth from a supermarket. We tested permanent exposure, short exposure, horizontal transfer and repellent effect on two bed bug colonies. Sommières earth demonstrated efficacy ranging from 75% to 100% in permanent and short exposures, similar to the efficacy of diatomaceous earth from the pest management company. On the contrary, diatomaceous earth for litter conditioner and diatomaceous earth from a supermarket, green clay, talc, and sodium bicarbonate were found to be ineffective. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the efficacy of Sommières earth against bed bugs, but also highlights the variability in efficacy of diatomaceous earths on bed bugs depending on their quality.

Bio-Inspired Fluorescent Calcium Sulfate for the Conservation of Gypsum Plasterwork

In this work, the potential of bio-inspired strategies for the synthesis of calcium sulfate (CaSO4·nH2O) materials for heritage conservation is explored. For this, a nonclassical multi-step crystallization mechanism to understand the effect of calcein- a fluorescent chelating agent with a high affinity for divalent cations- on the nucleation and growth of calcium sulfate phases is proposed. Moving from the nano- to the macro-scale, this strategy sets the basis for the design and production of fluorescent nano-bassanite (NB-C; CaSO4·0.5H2O), with application as a fully compatible consolidant for the conservation of historic plasterwork. Once applied to gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) plaster specimens, cementation upon hydration of nano-bassanite results in a significant increase in mechanical strength, while intracrystalline occlusion of calcein in newly-formed gypsum cement improves its weathering resistance. Furthermore, under UV irradiation, the luminescence produced by calcein molecules occluded in gypsum crystals formed upon nano-bassanite hydration allows the easy identification of the newly deposited consolidant within the treated gypsum plaster without altering the substrate's appearance.

Unrestricted Chiral Patterning by Laser Writing in Liquid Crystalline and Plasmonic Nanocomposite Thin Films

Obtaining hierarchical structures with arbitrarily controlled chirality remains a challenge. Here, thin films featuring chiroptically bipolar patterns are produced by a device utilizing microscale photothermal re-melting of materials exhibiting chirality synchronization. This device operates autonomously, guided by an algorithm that facilitates the homochiral growth of supramolecular organic helices through controlling their re-melting. The chirality synchronization phenomena of constitutionally achiral molecules grants availability of both handednesses of the helices, enabling unrestricted chiral writing in the film. The collective chiroptical response of assembled molecules is utilised to guide the patterning process, creating a foundation for optically secured information. The established methodology enables achieving dissymmetry factor values for circular dichroism (CD) a magnitude higher than previously reported, as confirmed with state-of-the-art, synchrotron-based Mueller matrix polarimetry (MMP). Moreover, the developed method is extended to nanocomposites comprising gold nanoparticles, providing the opportunity to tune the CD toward the plasmonic region. This strategic application of photothermal processing, specifically laser-directed melting, uncovers the potential to broaden the selection of nanostructured materials with precisely designed functionalities for photonic applications.

Rotary Structural Color Spindles from Droplet Confined Magnetic Self-Assembly

Structural colors materials are profoundly explored owing to their fantastic optical properties and widespread applications. Development of structural color materials bearing flexible morphologies and versatile functionalities is highly anticipated. Here, a droplet-confined, magnetic-induced self-assembly strategy for generating rotary structural color spindles (SCSPs) by fast solvent extraction is proposed. The as-prepared SCSPs exhibit an orderly close-packed lattice structure, thus appearing brilliant structural colors that serve as encoding tags for multiplexed bioassays. Besides, benefitting from the abundant specific surface area, biomarkers can be labeled on the SCSPs with high efficiency for specific detection of analytes in clinical samples. Moreover, the directional magnetic moment arrangement enables contactless magnetic manipulation of the SCSPs, and the resultant rotary motions of the SCSPs generates turbulence in the detection solution, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency and shortening the detection time. Based on these merits, a portable point-of-care-testing strip integrating the rotary SCSPs is further constructed and the capability and advantages of this platform for multiplexed detection of tumor-related exosomes in clinical samples are demonstrated. This study offers a new way for the control of bottom-up self-assembly and extends the configuration and application values of colloidal crystal structural colors materials.

Tailorable and Angle-Independent Colors from Synthetic Brochosomes

Although various artificial dyes and pigments have been invented, certain application fields need structural colors because they can last for centuries even under harsh conditions. Here, we report that the antireflective Ag brochosomes (soccer-ball-like microscale granules covered by nanobowls) become colorful when the nanobowls on the Ag brochosomes are filled by polystyrene (PS) nanospheres. The color originates from the enhanced electromagnetic resonances of the PS nanospheres by the surrounding metallic nanobowls, suggested by both the experimental and the simulation results. The color is determined by the size of the PS nanospheres. We can tailor the color simply by reducing the diameter of the PS nanospheres via the plasma etching treatment. The color intensity of the Ag brochosomes filled with PS nanospheres shows weak dependence on the observing angles, benefiting from their spherical shape. Plasma etching treatment of the Ag brochosomes filled with PS nanospheres through different masks can design various structural color patterns. The simple fabrication process and the easy processability make the Ag brochosomes filled with PS nanospheres have promising applications in the structural color fields.

Biomimicry in nanotechnology: a comprehensive review

Biomimicry has been utilized in many branches of science and engineering to develop devices for enhanced and better performance. The application of nanotechnology has made life easier in modern times. It has offered a way to manipulate matter and systems at the atomic level. As a result, the miniaturization of numerous devices has been possible. Of late, the integration of biomimicry with nanotechnology has shown promising results in the fields of medicine, robotics, sensors, photonics, etc. Biomimicry in nanotechnology has provided eco-friendly and green solutions to the energy problem and in textiles. This is a new research area that needs to be explored more thoroughly. This review illustrates the progress and innovations made in the field of nanotechnology with the integration of biomimicry.

Photonic nanostructures mimicking floral epidermis for perovskite solar cells

Here, we report photonic nanostructures replicated from the adaxial epidermis of flower petals onto light-polymerized coatings using low-cost nanoimprint lithography at ambient temperature. These multifunctional nanocoatings are applied to confer enhanced light trapping, water repellence, and UV light and environmental moisture protection features in perovskite solar cells. The former feature helps attain a maximum power conversion efficiency of 24.61% (21.01% for the reference cell) without any additional device optimization. Added to these merits, the nanocoatings also enable stable operation under AM 1.5G and UV light continuous illumination or in real-world conditions. Our engineering approach provides a simple way to produce multifunctional nanocoatings optimized by nature's wisdom.

Designing photonic microparticles with droplet microfluidics

Photonic materials with a periodic change of refractive index show unique optical properties through wavelength-selective diffraction and modulation of the optical density of state, which is promising for various optical applications. In particular, photonic structures have been produced in the format of microparticles using emulsion templates to achieve advanced properties and applications beyond those of a conventional film format. Photonic microparticles can be used as a building block to construct macroscopic photonic materials, and the individual microparticles can serve as miniaturized photonic devices. Droplet microfluidics enables the production of emulsion drops with a controlled size, composition, and configuration that serve as the optimal confining geometry for designing photonic microparticles. This feature article reviews the recent progress and current state of the art in the field of photonic microparticles, covering all aspects of microfluidic production methods, microparticle geometries, optical properties, and applications. Two distinct bottom-up approaches based on colloidal assembly and liquid crystals are, respectively, discussed and compared.

Metal deposition and shape reproduction at biological temperatures on cell-level samples

The use of metal deposition has been limited to a limited number of applicable samples due to the increased temperature caused by accelerated electron impact on the substrate surface. The surfaces of various biological samples have a nanoscale structure with specific properties, which have been simulated in numerous studies. However, no examples of nano/microscale reproductions of biological surface features have used moulds. In this study, a mould that imitates the surface shape of a cellular-level biological material was fabricated, for the first time, and the shape was successfully reproduced using the mould. Al thin films were deposited on bovine sperm using magnetron sputtering without thermal denaturation with a cathode operating at a biological temperature. It is difficult to deposit films used as metal coatings on pre-treated biological materials at temperatures below 40 °C during evaporation. The Al thin film was peeled off and used as a mould to reproduce the shape of the sperm with high accuracy using a polymer. The results of this study represent a major innovation in reproducible biomimetic moulding technology, demonstrating biological temperature sputtering. We expect our non-destructive metal deposition and metal nano-moulding methods for biological samples to be the basis for the effective utilization of various biological structures.

Metabolically Doping of 3D Diatomaceous Biosilica with Titanium

Diatoms represent, in terms of species number, one of the largest groups of microalgae that have the ability to synthesize phenomenal mineral composites characterized by complex hierarchical structures. Their shells, called frustules, create intricately ornamented structures, reminiscent of the most sophisticated, natural mosaics. Ordinated pore systems perforate siliceous walls of the frustules with diameters ranging from nano to micro-scale, forming openwork three-dimensional silica structures. The use of these features is one of the main challenges in developing new technological solutions. In this study we assess the ability of selected diatom species (Pseudostaurosira trainorii) for metabolic insertion of soluble titanium from the culture medium into the structure of amorphous silica cell walls by its cultivation in laboratory conditions. The study is aimed at obtaining new and strengthening the already existing optical properties of diatomaceous biosilica. The physicochemical properties of the obtained materials have been studied using a series of instrumental methods.

Freeze-derived heterogeneous structural color films

Structural colors have a demonstrated value in constructing various functional materials. Efforts in this area are devoted to developing stratagem for generating heterogeneous structurally colored materials with new architectures and functions. Here, inspired by icing process in nature and ice-templating technologies, we present freeze-derived heterogeneous structural color hydrogels with multiscale structural and functional features. We find that the space-occupying effect of ice crystals is helpful for tuning the distance of non-close-packed colloidal crystal nanoparticles, resulting in corresponding reflection wavelength shifts in the icing area. Thus, by effectively controlling the growth of ice crystals and photo-polymerizing them, structural color hydrogels with the desired structures and morphologies can be customized. Other than traditional monochromatic structure color hydrogels, the resultant hydrogels can be imparted with heterogeneous structured multi-compartment body and multi-color with designed patterns through varying the freezing area design. Based on these features, we have also explored the potential value of these heterotypic structural color hydrogels for information encryptions and decryptions by creating spatiotemporally controlled icing areas. We believe that these inverse ice-template structural color hydrogels will offer new routes for the construction and modulation of next generation smart materials with desired complex architectures.

Diatom biosilica: Source, Physical-chemical characterization, modification, and application

Growing research interest in the use of diatomaceous biosilica results from its unique properties, such as chemical inertness, biocompatibility, high mechanical and thermal stability, low thermal conductivity, homogeneous porous structure with a large specific surface. Unlike the production of synthetic silica materials with a micro- or nano-scale structure in an expensive conventional manufacturing process, diatomaceous biosilica can be produced in huge quantities without significant expenditure of energy and materials. This fact makes it an unlimited, easily accessible, natural, inexpensive, and renewable material. Moreover, the production of bio-silica is extremely environmentally friendly, as there is essentially no toxic waste, and the process does not require more energy compared to the production of synthetic silica-based materials. For all these reasons, diatoms are an intriguing alternative to synthetic materials in developing cheap biomaterials used in a different branch of industry. Ultrasonication pretreatment assisted rapid co-assembly of cellulose nanocrystal and metal ion for multifunctional application

Co-assembly of metal ion and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is a promising strategy to fabricate novel iridescent CNC materials with advanced applications. By combining ultrasonication pretreatment and vacuum-assisted self-assembly (VASA) technique, a facile and rapid strategy is proposed to prepare the Mn²⁺-doped carboxylated CNC (C-CNC) iridescent films with multifunctional application. The ultrasonication pretreatment temporarily disassembles the aggregates of C-CNC nanorods caused by the electrostatic interaction between negative charged C-CNC and Mn²⁺. The subsequent VASA process accelerates the self-assembly of chiral liquid crystals prior to the re-agglomeration of C-CNC by the bridge effect of Mn²⁺. Furthermore, the as-prepared Mn²⁺/CNC film exhibits a rapid and visible color change in ammonia atmosphere along with the formation of MnO₂. The reversible change can be realized by the stimulation of reducing agent. The derived MnO₂/C-CNC composite film displays efficient removal of methylene blue dye in aqueous solution by both of adsorption and degradation procedure.

Bio-inspired structural colors and their applications

Structural colors, generated by the interaction of interference, diffraction, and scattering between incident light and periodic nanostructured surfaces with features of the same scale with incident visible light wavelengths, have recently attracted intense interest in a wide range of research fields, due to their advantages such as various brilliant colors, long-term stability and environmental friendliness, low energy consumption, and mysterious biological functions. Tremendous effort has been made to design structural colors and considerable progress has been achieved in the past few decades. However, there are still significant challenges and obstacles, such as durability, portability, compatibility, recyclability, mass production of structural-color materials, etc., that need to be solved by rational structural design and novel manufacturing strategies. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of bio-inspired structural colors and their applications. First, we introduce several typical natural structural colors displayed by living organisms from fundamental optical phenomena, including interference, diffraction grating, scattering, photonic crystals effects, the combination of different phenomena, etc. Subsequently, we review recent progress in bio-inspired artificial structural colors generated from advanced micro/nanoscale manufacturing strategies to relevant biomimetic approaches, including self-assembly, template methods, phase conversion, magnetron sputtering, atomic layer deposition, etc. Besides, we also present the current and potential applications of structural colors in various fields, such as displays, anti-counterfeiting, wearable electronics, stealth, printing, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future development directions of structural colors, aiming to push forward the research and applications of structural-color materials.

Gifts from Nature: Bio-Inspired Materials for Rechargeable Secondary Batteries

Materials in nature have evolved to the most efficient forms and have adapted to various environmental conditions over tens of thousands of years. Because of their versatile functionalities and environmental friendliness, numerous attempts have been made to use bio-inspired materials for industrial applications, establishing the importance of biomimetics. Biomimetics have become pivotal to the search for technological breakthroughs in the area of rechargeable secondary batteries. Here, the characteristics of bio-inspired materials that are useful for secondary batteries as well as their benefits for application as the main components of batteries (e.g., electrodes, separators, and binders) are discussed. The use of bio-inspired materials for the synthesis of nanomaterials with complex structures, low-cost electrode materials prepared from biomass, and biomolecular organic electrodes for lithium-ion batteries are also introduced. In addition, nature-derived separators and binders are discussed, including their effects on enhancing battery performance and safety. Recent developments toward next-generation secondary batteries including sodium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries, and flexible batteries are also mentioned to understand the feasibility of using bio-inspired materials in these new battery systems. Finally, current research trends are covered and future directions are proposed to provide important insights into scientific and practical issues in the development of biomimetics technologies for secondary batteries.

Rational Design of Bioinspired Nanocomposites with Tunable Catalytic Activity

Biological assembly processes offer inspiration for ordering building blocks across multiple length scales into advanced functional materials. Such bioinspired strategies are attractive for assembling supported catalysts, where shaping and structuring across length scales are essential for their performance but still remain tremendously difficult to achieve. Here, we present a simple bioinspired route toward supported catalysts with tunable activity and selectivity. We coprecipitate shape-controlled nanocomposites with large specific surface areas of barium carbonate nanocrystals that are uniformly embedded in a silica support. Subsequently, we exchange the barium carbonate to cobalt while preserving the nanoscopic layout and microscopic shape, and demonstrate their catalytic performances in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis as a case study. Control over the crystal size between 10 and 17 nm offers tunable activity and selectivity for shorter (C₅-C₁₁) and longer (C₂₀₊) hydrocarbons, respectively. Hence, these results open simple, versatile, and scalable routes to tunable and highly reactive bioinspired catalysts.

Light absorption enhancement and radiation hardening for triple junction solar cell through bioinspired nanostructures

Multi-junction solar cells constitute the main source of power for space applications. However, exposure of solar cells to the space radiation environment significantly degrades their performance across the mission lifetime. Here, we seek to improve the radiation hardness of the triple junction solar cell, GaInP/Ga(In)As/Ge, by decreasing the thickness of the more sensitive middle junction. Thin junctions facilitate the collection of minority carriers and show slower degradation due to defects. However, thinning the junction decreases the absorption, and consequently, the expected photocurrent. To compensate for this loss, we examined two bioinspired surface patterns that exhibit anti-reflective and light-trapping properties: (a) the moth-eye structure which enables vision in poorly illuminated environments and (b) the patterns of the hard cell of a unicellular photosynthetic micro-alga, the diatoms. We parametrize and optimize the biomimetic structures, aiming to maximize the absorbed light by the solar cell while achieving significant reduction in the middle junction thickness. The density of the radiation-induced defects is independent of the junction thickness, as we demonstrate using Monte Carlo simulations, allowing the direct comparison of different combinations of middle junction thicknesses and light trapping structures. We incorporate the radiation effects into the solar cell model as a decrease in minority carrier lifetime and an increase in surface recombination velocity, and we quantify the gain in efficiency for different combinations of junction thickness and the light-trapping structure at equal radiation damage. Solar cells with thin junctions compensated by the light-trapping structures offer a promising approach to improve solar cell radiation hardness and robustness, with up to 2% higher end-of-life efficiency than the commonly used configuration at high radiation exposure.

Biomimetic Nanostructure Platform for Cancer Diagnosis Based on Tumor Biomarkers

Biomarker discovery and its clinical use have attracted considerable attention since early cancer diagnosis can significantly decrease mortality. Cancer biomarkers include a wide range of biomolecules, such as nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites, sugars, and cytogenetic substances present in human biofluids. Except for free-circulating biomarkers, tumor-extracellular vesicles (tEVs) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can serve as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of various cancers. Considering the potential of tumor biomarkers in clinical settings, several bioinspired detection systems based on nanotechnologies are in the spotlight for detection. However, tremendous challenges remain in detection because of massive contamination, unstable signal-to-noise ratios due to heterogeneity, nonspecific bindings, or a lack of efficient amplification. To date, many approaches are under development to improve the sensitivity and specificity of tumor biomarker isolation and detection. Particularly, the exploration of natural materials in biological frames has encouraged researchers to develop new bioinspired and biomimetic nanostructures, which can mimic the natural processes to facilitate biomarker capture and detection in clinical settings. These platforms have substantial influence in biomedical applications, owing to their capture ability, significant contrast increase, high sensitivity, and specificity. In this review, we first describe the potential of tumor biomarkers in a liquid biopsy and then provide an overview of the progress of biomimetic nanostructure platforms to isolate and detect tumor biomarkers, including in vitro and in vivo studies. Capture efficiency, scale, amplification, sensitivity, and specificity are the criteria that will be further discussed for evaluating the capability of platforms. Bioinspired and biomimetic systems appear to have a bright future to settle obstacles encountered in tumor biomarker detection, thus enhancing effective cancer diagnosis.

Morphogenesis of iridescent feathers in Anna's hummingbird Calypte anna

Color is a phenotypic trait of utmost importance, particularly in birds, which are known for their diverse color signals and color-producing mechanisms including pigment-based colors, light scattering from nanostructured feather tissues and combinations thereof. Bright iridescent plumage colors of hummingbirds are caused by light scattering by an organized array of flattened, pigment organelles, containing air-filled vesicles, called melanosomes. These hollow platelets are organized in multilayer arrays that contain numerous sharp air/melanin refractive index interfaces, producing brilliant iridescent colors. Despite their ecological significance and potential for inspiration of new optical materials, how platelets form and spatially arrange in nanostructures in growing feathers remains unknown. Here, we tested the hypothesis that melanosome formation and organization occurs mostly through passive self-assembly processes by assembling a developmental time series of growing hummingbird feathers using optical and electron microscopy. We show that hummingbird platelets contain air bubbles or vesicles upon their formation in pigment-producing cells, melanocytes. When melanosomes are transferred to neighboring keratinocytes (the cells shaping barbule structure) they drastically expand in size; and variation in this enlargement appears to be driven by physical constraints caused by the placement of the melanosomes within the barbule plate and their proximity to other melanosomes. As the barbule elongates and narrows, polymerizing feather corneous beta protein (CβP) orients melanosomes unilaterally, forcing them into a stacked configuration. These results reveal potentially novel forces driving the self-assembly of the nanostructures producing some of the brightest colors in nature.<.

Electromagnetic-Polarization-Selective Composites with Quasi-1D Van der Waals Fillers: Nanoscale Material Functionality That Mimics Macroscopic Systems

We report on the preparation of flexible polymer composite films with aligned metallic fillers composed of atomic chain bundles of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals material, tantalum triselenide (TaSe₃). The material functionality, embedded at the nanoscale level, is achieved by mimicking the design of an electromagnetic aperture grid antenna. The processed composites employ chemically exfoliated TaSe₃ nanowires as the grid building blocks incorporated within the thin film. Filler alignment is achieved using the "blade coating" method. Measurements conducted in the X-band frequency range demonstrate that the electromagnetic transmission through such films can be varied significantly by changing the relative orientations of the quasi-1D fillers and the polarization of the electromagnetic wave. We argue that such polarization-sensitive polymer films with unique quasi-1D metallic fillers are applicable to advanced electromagnetic interference shielding in future communication systems.

A Bacteria-Inspired Morphology Genetic Biomedical Material: Self-Propelled Artificial Microbots for Metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer Treatment

Morphology genetic biomedical materials (MGBMs), referring to fabricating materials by learning from the genetic morphologies and strategies of natural species, hold great potential for biomedical applications. Inspired by the cargo-carrying-bacterial therapy (microbots) for cancer treatment, a MGBM (artificial microbots, AMBs) was constructed. Rather than the inherent bacterial properties (cancerous chemotaxis, tumor invasion, cytotoxicity), AMBs also possessed ingenious nitric oxide (NO) generation strategy. Mimicking the bacterial construction, the hyaluronic acid (HA) polysaccharide was induced as a coating capsule of AMBs to achieve long circulation in blood and specific tissue preference (tumor tropism). Covered under the capsule-like polysaccharide was the combinatorial agent, the self-assembly constructed by the amphiphilic dendrons with abundant l-arginine residues peripherally (as endogenous NO donor) and hydrophobic chemotherapeutic drugs at the core stacking on the surface of SWNTs (the photothermal agent) for a robust chemo-photothermal therapy (chemo-PTT) and the elicited immune therapy. Subsequently, the classic inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) pathway aroused by immune response was revolutionarily utilized to oxidize the l-arginine substrates for NO production, the process for which could also be promoted by the high reactive oxygen species level generated by chemo-PTT. The NO generated by AMBs was intended to regulate vasodilation and cause a dramatic invasion (as the microbots) to disperse the therapeutic agents throughout the solid tumor for a much more enhanced curative effect, which we defined as "self-propulsion". The self-propelled AMBs exhibiting impressive primary tumor ablation, as well as the distant metastasis regression to conquer the metastatic triple negative breast cancer, provided pioneering potential therapeutic opportunities, and enlightened broad prospects in biomedical application.

The orbital hoods of snapping shrimp have surface features that may represent tradeoffs between vision and protection

Snapping shrimp (Alpheidae) are decapod crustaceans named for the snapping claws with which they produce cavitation bubbles. Snapping shrimp use the shock waves released by collapsing cavitation bubbles as weapons. Along with their distinctive claws, snapping shrimp have orbital hoods, extensions of their carapace that cover their heads and eyes. Snapping shrimp view the world through their orbital hoods, so we asked if the surfaces of the orbital hoods of the snapping shrimp Alpheus heterochaelis have features that minimize the scattering of light. Using SEM, we found that surface features, primarily microbial epibionts, covered less space on the surfaces of the orbital hoods of A. heterochaelis (∼18%) than they do elsewhere on the carapace (∼50%). Next, we asked if these surface features influence aerophobicity. By measuring the contact angles of air bubbles, we found the orbital hoods of A. heterochaelis are less aerophobic than other regions of the carapace. Surfaces that are less aerophobic are more likely to have cavitation bubbles adhere to them and are more likely to have shock waves cause new cavitation bubbles to nucleate upon them. Computational modeling indicates the orbital hoods of A. heterochaelis face a functional trade-off: fewer surface features, such as less extensive communities of microbial epibionts, may minimize the scattering of light at the cost of making the adhesion and nucleation of cavitation bubbles more likely.

Multifunctional biohybrid magnetite microrobots for imaging-guided therapy

Magnetic microrobots and nanorobots can be remotely controlled to propel in complex biological fluids with high precision by using magnetic fields. Their potential for controlled navigation in hard-to-reach cavities of the human body makes them promising miniaturized robotic tools to diagnose and treat diseases in a minimally invasive manner. However, critical issues, such as motion tracking, biocompatibility, biodegradation, and diagnostic/therapeutic effects, need to be resolved to allow preclinical in vivo development and clinical trials. We report biohybrid magnetic robots endowed with multifunctional capabilities by integrating desired structural and functional attributes from a biological matrix and an engineered coating. Helical microswimmers were fabricated from Spirulina microalgae via a facile dip-coating process in magnetite (Fe₃O₄) suspensions, superparamagnetic, and equipped with robust navigation capability in various biofluids. The innate properties of the microalgae allowed in vivo fluorescence imaging and remote diagnostic sensing without the need for any surface modification. Furthermore, in vivo magnetic resonance imaging tracked a swarm of microswimmers inside rodent stomachs, a deep organ where fluorescence-based imaging ceased to work because of its penetration limitation. Meanwhile, the microswimmers were able to degrade and exhibited selective cytotoxicity to cancer cell lines, subject to the thickness of the Fe₃O₄ coating, which could be tailored via the dip-coating process. The biohybrid microrobots reported herein represent a microrobotic platform that could be further developed for in vivo imaging-guided therapy and a proof of concept for the engineering of multifunctional microrobotic and nanorobotic devices.

Patterning of protein-based materials

Micro- and nanopatterning of proteins on surfaces allows to develop for example high-throughput biosensors in biomedical diagnostics and in general advances the understanding of cell-material interactions in tissue engineering. Today, many techniques are available to generate protein pattern, ranging from technically simple ones, such as micro-contact printing, to highly tunable optical lithography or even technically sophisticated scanning probe lithography. Here, one focus is on the progress made in the development of protein-based materials as positive or negative photoresists allowing micro- to nanostructured scaffolds for biocompatible photonic, electronic and tissue engineering applications. The second one is on approaches, which allow a controlled spatiotemporal positioning of a single protein on surfaces, enabled by the recent developments in immobilization techniques coherent with the sensitive nature of proteins, defined protein orientation and maintenance of the protein activity at interfaces. The third one is on progress in photolithography-based methods, which allow to control the formation of protein-repellant/adhesive polymer brushes.

Alternating Stacking of Nanocrystals and Nanofibers into Ultrastrong Chiral Biocomposite Laminates

Attaining high mechanical strength and flexibility for chiral nematic biopolymer composites without compromising their vivid optical iridescence is an intriguing but challenging task. Traditional cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) blend nanocomposite films typically lose their coloration and display weak mechanical performance due to poor load transfer between needle-like nanocrystals and the collapse of a twisted organization. Herein, we report a design of robust laminated biocomposites with an alternatively stacked chiral nematic CNC phase and a random cellulose nanofiber (CNF) phase via a hydrogen-bonding-assisted layer-by-layer method. In contrast to the traditional biopolymer blends, the alternating CNC-CNF stacked films possess many-fold enhancement in both mechanical strength and toughness with their vivid structural colors highly preserved. We suggest that the enriched hydrogen bonding and partial limited entanglements at the interfaces between the helicoidal and random phases are responsible for enhancing the mechanical performance of robust biocomposites with brilliant iridescent colors. Such organized cellulose-cellulose biocomposites with alternating helicoidal-random phases fabricated by a facile sequential strategy may facilitate the development of sustainably sourced, damage-tolerant, and photonic films for bioenabled display technologies, security indicators, soft robotics, camouflages, and pressure sensors.

Noniridescent Biomimetic Photonic Microdomes by Inkjet Printing

Certain bird species have evolved spectacular colors that arise from organized nanostructures of melanin. Its high refractive index (∼1.8) and broadband absorptive properties enable vivid structural colors that are nonsusceptible to photobleaching. Mimicking natural melanin structural coloration could enable several important applications, in particular, for noniridescent systems with colors that are independent of incidence angle. Here, we address this by forming melanin photonic crystal microdomes by inkjet printing. Owing to their curved nature, the microdomes exhibit noniridescent vivid structural coloration, tunable throughout the visible range via the size of the nanoparticles. Large-area arrays (>1 cm²) of high-quality photonic microdomes could be printed on both rigid and flexible substrates. Combined with scalable fabrication and the nontoxicity of melanin, the presented photonic microdomes with noniridescent structural coloration may find use in a variety of applications, including sensing, displays, and anticounterfeit holograms.

A highly colorimetric photonic film composed of non-close-packed melanin-like colloidal arrays

HOTHESIS

Because of their flexible structure and adjustable color, structural colors with non-close-packed colloidal crystal arrays (NCCAs) have broad applications. However, most of these structural colors are limited by an approximate refractive index or high background scattering, and they present an unsatisfactory color that seriously hinders their practical application. Preparation of particles with a high refractive index or adsorption coefficient may be an effective approach to construct highly colorimetric NCCA structural colors in a nonaqueous solvent. The aim of this study was to explore the formation process of NCCA by the assembly of colloidal particles in a nonaqueous solvent, so as to fabricate NCCAs with a high refractive index and high adsorption.

EXPERIMENTS

An attempt was made to fabricate the NCCA structural color by dispersing the desired particles in a 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) solvent. Surface-functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were developed by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The formation of NCCA was studied by comparing the dispersion of three classes of surface-functionalization of colloidal particles in the HEMA solvent. The melanin-like particles with a high refractive index and a high adsorption coefficient were synthesized by doping polydopamine (PDA) into good surface-functionalization particles by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. A highly colorimetric poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) optical film with NCCA was fabricated by dispersing the melanin-like particles in a pHEMA hydrogel.

FINDINGS

PMMA-HEMA colloidal particles could successfully construct a NCCA structure in a nonaqueous HEMA solvent because of the solvation. Based on the "good particles," PMMA-HEMA-PDA colloidal particles, an initial 3-hydroxytyramine hydrochloride (DA·HCl) concentration of 1.926 mM was shown to significantly improve the colorimetric value of the final solidified NCCA hydrogel. These results provided an important reference for the construction of surfactant-free HEMA non-close-packed colloidal crystals. This highly colorimetric structurally colored hydrogel may be widely used in the design of a variety of colored intelligent sensors and soft devices.

Lighting system bioinspired by Haworthia obtusa

Electricity plays an important role in modern societies, with lighting and illumination accounting for approximately one-fifth of the global demand for electricity. Haworthia obtusa has the remarkable ability to collect solar light through a so-called ‘window’ which allows it to photosynthesise in the dark. Inspired by this unique characteristic, we developed a novel lighting system that does not use electricity. The ‘window’ of H. obtusa is replicated using a scattering medium that collects solar light and guides it to an optical fibre. The optical fibre then carries the light indoors, where illumination is needed. The efficacy of this unique lighting system was confirmed both numerically and experimentally. The developed system should help in lowering energy consumption.

Nature-derived materials for the fabrication of functional biodevices

Nature provides an incredible source of inspiration, structural concepts, and materials toward applications to improve the lives of people around the world, while preserving ecosystems, and addressing environmental sustainability. In particular, materials derived from animal and plant sources can provide low-cost, renewable building blocks for such applications. Nature-derived materials are of interest for their properties of biodegradability, bioconformability, biorecognition, self-repair, and stimuli response. While long used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, their use in functional devices such as (bio)electronics, sensors, and optical systems for healthcare and biomonitoring is finding increasing attention. The objective of this review is to cover the varied nature derived and sourced materials currently used in active biodevices and components that possess electrical or electronic behavior. We discuss materials ranging from proteins and polypeptides such as silk and collagen, polysaccharides including chitin and cellulose, to seaweed derived biomaterials, and DNA. These materials may be used as passive substrates or support architectures and often, as the functional elements either by themselves or as biocomposites. We further discuss natural pigments such as melanin and indigo that serve as active elements in devices. Increasingly, combinations of different biomaterials are being used to address the challenges of fabrication and performance in human monitoring or medicine. Finally, this review gives perspectives on the sourcing, processing, degradation, and biocompatibility of these materials. This rapidly growing multidisciplinary area of research will be advanced by a systematic understanding of nature-inspired materials and design concepts in (bio)electronic devices.

Periodic Three-Dimensional Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Spheres Embedded with Co/Co3O4 Nanoparticles toward Microwave Absorption

Although various bio-inspired materials with outstanding mechanical, acoustic, and optic properties have been developed, bio-inspired materials for microwave absorption applications are rarely reported. Herein, under the inspiration of the opal structure, for the first time, a kind of Co@Co₃O₄/nitrogen-doped (N-doped) mesoporous carbon sphere (Co@Co₃O₄/NMCS) with a periodic three-dimensional structure toward microwave absorption application was designed and synthesized. The microwave absorption performance was optimized with respect to the content of Co@Co₃O₄ nanoparticles. Co@Co₃O₄/NMCS with ∼20 wt % Co@Co₃O₄ achieves a reflection loss of -53.8 dB at 5.7 GHz. The simulated radar cross section demonstrated that the Co@Co₃O₄/NMCS can efficiently suppress the strong electromagnetic scattering from a metal groove structure, which further reveals its excellent absorbing performance. These periodic porous structures of N-doped mesoporous carbon spheres combined with the magnetic Co@Co₃O₄ nanoparticles contribute to the excellent microwave-absorbing performance.

Numerical and Experimental Study of the Mechanical Response of Diatom Frustules

Diatom frustules, with their hierarchical three-dimensional patterned silica structures at nano to micrometer dimensions, can be a paragon for the design of lightweight structural materials. However, the mechanical properties of frustules, especially the species with pennate symmetry, have not been studied systematically. A novel approach combining in situ micro-indentation and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (XCT)-based finite element analysis (FEA) at the identical sample is developed and applied to Didymosphenia geminata frustule. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy investigations are conducted to obtain detailed information regarding the resolvable structures and the composition. During the in situ micro-indentation studies of Didymosphenia geminata frustule, a mainly elastic deformation behavior with displacement discontinuities/non-linearities is observed. To extract material properties from obtained load-displacement curves in the elastic region, elastic finite element method (FEM) simulations are conducted. Young’s modulus is determined as 31.8 GPa. The method described in this paper allows understanding of the mechanical behavior of very complex structures.

Marine-Derived Polymeric Materials and Biomimetics: An Overview

The review covers recent literature on the ocean as both a source of biotechnological tools and as a source of bio-inspired materials. The emphasis is on marine biomacromolecules namely hyaluronic acid, chitin and chitosan, peptides, collagen, enzymes, polysaccharides from algae, and secondary metabolites like mycosporines. Their specific biological, physicochemical and structural properties together with relevant applications in biocomposite materials have been included. Additionally, it refers to the marine organisms as source of inspiration for the design and development of sustainable and functional (bio)materials. Marine biological functions that mimic reef fish mucus, marine adhesives and structural colouration are explained.

The cooling mechanism of minuscule ribbed surfaces

One reason human beings wear stockings is to warm their legs. Ordinary textile materials are thermally insulative, which prevents body’s heat from dissipating. In contrary to this common sense, it was discovered that some knitted stockings made up of them permanently promote heat release and cool body. This non-intuitive phenomenon emerges when micro-size yarns are knitted to form wide spacing between neighboring yarns. However, the reason why they cool body was unclear because conventional principles of cooling garments cannot account for it. Here, in the basis of fluid-solid conjugate heat transfer analysis of natural convection, we have clarified the cooling mechanism originates from relative relationship between their geometric structure, a periodic alignment of minuscule ribs, and thermal boundary layer. Our novel finding revealed that sufficiently small ribs on the surface are exposed to steep temperature gradient within thermal boundary layer. Thereby, thermal conduction via ribs is enhanced complementarily as they are separated to guide cooler flow onto the surface. Our study provides a general insight into understanding permanent cooling mechanism on micro-size ribbed surfaces in contrast to conventional theory for heat sink, which is applicable not only to other clothes, but also to artificial devices or natural structures.

Ultra-dense, curved, grating optics determines peacock spider coloration

Controlling light through photonic nanostructures is important for everyday optical components, from spectrometers to data storage and readout. In nature, nanostructured materials produce wavelength-dependent colors that are key for visual communication across animals. Here, we investigate two Australian peacock spiders, which court females in complex dances with either iridescent color patterns (Maratus robinsoni) or an approximately angle-independent blue coloration (M. nigromaculatus). Using light microscopy, FIB-SEM imaging, imaging scatterometry, and optical modeling, we show that both color displays originate from nanogratings on structured 3D surfaces. The difference in angle-dependency of the coloration results from a combination of the local scale shape and the nanograting period. The iridescence of M. robinsoni arises from ordered gratings on locally flat substrates, while the more stable blue colors of M. nigromaculatus originate from ultra-dense, curved gratings with multiscale disorder. Our results shed light on the design principle of the peacock spiders' scales and could inspire novel dispersive components, e.g. used in spectroscopic applications.

Structural basis of light-harvesting in the photosystem II core complex

Photosystem II (PSII) is a membrane-spanning, multi-subunit pigment-protein complex responsible for the oxidation of water and the reduction of plastoquinone in oxygenic photosynthesis. In the present review, the recent explosive increase in available structural information about the PSII core complex based on X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy is described at a level of detail that is suitable for a future structure-based analysis of light-harvesting processes. This description includes a proposal for a consistent numbering scheme of protein-bound pigment cofactors across species. The structural survey is complemented by an overview of the state of affairs in structure-based modeling of excitation energy transfer in the PSII core complex with emphasis on electrostatic computations, optical properties of the reaction center, the assignment of long-wavelength chlorophylls, and energy trapping mechanisms.

Programmable Fabrication of Submicrometer Bent Pillar Structures Enabled by a Photoreconfigurable Azopolymer

Anisotropic small structures found throughout living nature have unique functionalities as seen by Gecko lizards. Here, we present a simple yet programmable method for fabricating anisotropic, submicrometer-sized bent pillar structures using photoreconfiguration of an azopolymer. A slant irradiation of a p-polarized light on the pillar structure of an azopolymer simply results in a bent pillar structure. By combining the field-gradient effect and directionality of photofluidization, control of the bending shape and the curvature is achieved. With the bent pillar patterned surface, anisotropic wetting and directional adhesion are demonstrated. Moreover, the bent pillar structures can be transferred to other polymers, highlighting the practical importance of this method. We believe that this pragmatic method to fabricate bent pillars can be used in a reliable manner for many applications requiring the systematic variation of a bent pillar structure.

3D Diatom-Designed and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) Manufactured Metallic Structures

Diatom frustules, with their diverse three-dimensional regular silica structures and nano- to micrometer dimensions, represent perfect model systems for biomimetic fabrication of materials and devices. The structure of a frustule of the diatom Didymosphenia geminata was nondestructively visualized using nano X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and transferred into a CAD file for the first time. Subsequently, this CAD file was used as the input for an engineered object, which was manufactured by applying an additive manufacturing technique (3D Selective Laser Melting, SLM) and using titanium powder. The self-similarity of the natural and the engineered objects was verified using nano and micro XCT. The biomimetic approach described in this paper is a proof-of-concept for future developments in the scaling-up of manufacturing based on special properties of microorganisms.

Compression-Responsive Photonic Crystals Based on Fluorine-Containing Polymers

Fluoropolymers represent a unique class of functional polymers due to their various interesting and important properties such as thermal stability, resistance toward chemicals, repellent behaviors, and their low refractive indices in comparison to other polymeric materials. Based on the latter optical property, fluoropolymers are particularly of interest for the preparation of photonic crystals for optical sensing application. Within the present study, photonic crystals were prepared based on core-interlayer-shell particles focusing on fluoropolymers. For particle assembly, the melt-shear organization technique was applied. The high order and refractive index contrast of the individual components of the colloidal crystal structure lead to remarkable reflection colors according to Bragg’s law of diffraction. Due to the special architecture of the particles, consisting of a soft core, a comparably hard interlayer, and again a soft shell, the resulting opal films were capable of changing their shape and domain sizes upon applied pressure, which was accompanied with a (reversible) change of the observed reflection colors as well. By the incorporation of adjustable amounts of UV cross-linking agents into the opal film and subsequent treatment with different UV irradiation times, stable and pressure-sensitive opal films were obtained. It is shown that the present strategy led to (i) pressure-sensitive opal films featuring reversibly switchable reflection colors and (ii) that opal films can be prepared, for which the written pattern—resulting from the compressed particles—could be fixed upon subsequent irradiation with UV light. The herein described novel fluoropolymer-containing photonic crystals, with their pressure-tunable reflection color, are promising candidates in the field of sensing devices and as potential candidates for anti-counterfeiting materials.

Nanostructured Hybrid-Material Transparent Surface with Antireflection Properties and a Facile Fabrication Process

Highly transparent optical surfaces with antireflection (AR) properties have the potential to increase the performance of a wide range of applications, such as windows for photovoltaic cells, photodetectors, and display screens among others. Biomimetic structures inspired by the moth-eye have attracted much attention as they can offer superior AR properties, which can generate broadband, omnidirectional optical transmission, and water-repellent self-cleaning behavior. However, many biomimetic surfaces suffer from time-consuming and complex processing, for example, electron beam and nanoimprint lithography, and/or sub-optimal mechanical reliability. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid material approach-nanostructured polyimide on a substrate-for demonstrating a surface with significant AR and hydrophobic properties together with low scattering (haze) and high mechanical resistance. As an example of applications, we demonstrate an indium tin oxide transparent conductive substrate with a large AR effect and optical transmission associated to the nanostructured polyimide coating. The proposed design and method based on conventional spin-coating and lithography-free metal dewetting have the potential to be a low-cost processing path of nanostructured AR transparent substrates.

Fiber with Butterfly Wings: Creating Colored Carbon Fibers with Increased Strength, Adhesion, and Reversible Malleability

Colored and color-changing materials are central to perception and interaction in nature and have been exploited in an array of modern technologies such as sensors, visual displays, and smart materials. Attempts to introduce color into carbon fiber materials have been limited by deleterious impacts on fiber properties, and the extension of colored fibers toward "smart composites" remains in its infancy. We present carbon fibers incorporating structural color, similar to that observed on the surface of soap bubbles and various insects and birds, by modifying the fiber surface through in situ polymerization grafting. When dry, the treated fibers exhibit a striking blue color, but when exposed to a volatile solvent, a cascade of colors across the visible light region is observed as the film first swells and then shrinks as the solvent evaporates. The treated fibers not only possess a unique color and color-changing ability but also can be reversibly formed into complex shapes and bear significant loads even without being encased in a supporting polymer. The tensile strength of treated fibers shows a statistically significant increase (+12%), and evaluation of the fiber-to-matrix adhesion of these polymers to an epoxy resin shows more than 300% improvement over control fibers. This approach creates a new platform for the multifaceted advance of smart composites.

Lake sedimentary biogenic silica from diatoms constitutes a significant global sink for aluminium

Diatoms play an important role in marine biogeochemical cycle of aluminum (Al), as dissolved Al is taken up by diatoms to build their siliceous frustules and is involved in the sedimentation of diatomaceous biogenic silica (BSi). The Al incorporation in BSi facilitates decreasing the dissolution of marine BSi and thus substantially influences the biochemical processes driven by diatoms, such as CO₂ sequestration. However, the role of lake BSi in the terrestrial biochemical Al cycle has not been explored, though lakes represent the second-largest sink for BSi. By identifying the previously unexplored high Al/Si atomic ratios (up to 0.052) in lake BSi, here we show lake BSi is a large terrestrial Al pool due to its high Al content, and lake sedimentary BSi constitutes a significant global sink for Al, which is on the same magnitude as the Al sink in global oceans.

Diatoms drive biogeochemical cycling of aluminum by incorporating this element into their shells, but this process has not been quantified in freshwater systems. Here the authors quantify diatom-mediated aluminum fluxes in lakes and determine that they rival the aluminum sink in the global ocean.

Core-shell nanospheres behind the blue eyes of the bay scallop Argopecten irradians

The bay scallop Argopecten irradians (Mollusca: Bivalvia) has dozens of iridescent blue eyes that focus light using mirror-based optics. Here, we test the hypothesis that these eyes appear blue because of photonic nanostructures that preferentially scatter short-wavelength light. Using transmission electron microscopy, we found that the epithelial cells covering the eyes of A. irradians have three distinct layers: an outer layer of microvilli, a middle layer of random close-packed nanospheres and an inner layer of pigment granules. The nanospheres are approximately 180 nm in diameter and consist of electron-dense cores approximately 140 nm in diameter surrounded by less electron-dense shells 20 nm thick. They are packed at a volume density of approximately 60% and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicates that they are not mineralized. Optical modelling revealed that the nanospheres are an ideal size for producing angle-weighted scattering that is bright and blue. A comparative perspective supports our hypothesis: epithelial cells from the black eyes of the sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus have an outer layer of microvilli and an inner layer of pigment granules but lack a layer of nanospheres between them. We speculate that light-scattering nanospheres help to prevent UV wavelengths from damaging the internal structures of the eyes of A. irradians and other blue-eyed scallops.

Wing scale ultrastructure underlying convergent and divergent iridescent colours in mimetic Heliconius butterflies

Iridescence is an optical phenomenon whereby colour changes with the illumination and viewing angle. It can be produced by thin film interference or diffraction. Iridescent optical structures are fairly common in nature, but relatively little is known about their production or evolution. Here we describe the structures responsible for producing blue-green iridescent colour in Heliconius butterflies. Overall the wing scale structures of iridescent and non-iridescent Heliconius species are very similar, both having longitudinal ridges joined by cross-ribs. However, iridescent scales have ridges composed of layered lamellae, which act as multilayer reflectors. Differences in brightness between species can be explained by the extent of overlap of the lamellae and their curvature as well as the density of ridges on the scale. Heliconius are well known for their Müllerian mimicry. We find that iridescent structural colour is not closely matched between co-mimetic species. Differences appear less pronounced in models of Heliconius vision than models of avian vision, suggesting that they are not driven by selection to avoid heterospecific courtship by co-mimics. Ridge profiles appear to evolve relatively slowly, being similar between closely related taxa, while ridge density evolves faster and is similar between distantly related co-mimics.

Photocontrolled Healable Structural Color Hydrogels

Structural color hydrogels with healable capability are of great significance in many fields, however the controllability of these materials still needs optimizing. Thus, this work presents a healable structural color hydrogel with photocontrolling properties. The component parts of the hydrogel are a graphene oxide (GO) integrated inverse opal hydrogel scaffold and a hydrogel filler with reversible phase transition. The inverse opal scaffold provides stable photonic crystal structure and the hydrogel filler is the foundation of healing. Taking advantage of the prominent photothermal conversion efficiency of GO, the healable structural color material is imparted with photocontrolled properties. It is found that the structural color hydrogel shaped in complex patterns can heal under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. These features indicate that the optical controllable healable structural color hydrogel can be employed in various applications, such as constructing complex objects, repairing tissues, and so on.

Recent progress in near-field nanolithography using light interactions with colloidal particles: from nanospheres to three-dimensional nanostructures

The advance of nanotechnology is firmly rooted in the development of cost-effective, versatile, and easily accessible nanofabrication techniques. The ability to pattern complex two-dimensional and three-dimensional nanostructured materials are particularly desirable, since they can have novel physical properties that are not found in bulk materials. This review article will report recent progress in utilizing self-assembly of colloidal particles for nanolithography. In these techniques, the near-field interactions of light and colloids are the sole mechanisms employed to generate the intensity distributions for patterning. Based on both 'bottom-up' self-assembly and 'top-down' lithography approaches, these processes are highly versatile and can take advantage of a number of optical effects, allowing the complex 3D nanostructures to be patterned using single exposures. There are several key advantages including low equipment cost, facile structure design, and patterning scalability, which will be discussed in detail. We will outline the underlying optical effects, review the geometries that can be fabricated, discuss key limitations, and highlight potential applications in nanophotonics, optoelectronic devices, and nanoarchitectured materials.
