Abstract
The electrical transport properties of a thin film of the diamondoid adamantane, deposited on an Au/W substrate, were investigated experimentally. The current I, in applied potential V, from the admantane-thiol/metal heterstructure to a wire lead on its surface exhibited non-symmetric (diode-like) characteristics and a signature of resistive switching (RS), an effect that is valuable to non-volatile memory applications. I(V) follows a hysteresis curve that passes twice through [Formula: see text] linearly, indicating RS between two states with significantly different conductances, possibly due to an exotic mechanism.

Abstract
Small diamond-like particles, diamondoids, have been shown to effectively functionalize gold electrodes in order to sense DNA units passing between the nanopore-embedded electrodes. In this work, we present a comparative study of Au(111) electrodes functionalized with different derivatives of lower diamondoids. Focus is put on the electronic and transport properties of such electrodes for different DNA nucleotides placed within the electrode gap. The functionalization promotes a specific binding to DNA leading to different properties for the system, which provides a tool set to systematically improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the electronic measurements across the electrodes. Using quantum transport calculations, we compare the effectiveness of the different functionalized electrodes in distinguishing the four DNA nucleotides. Our results point to the most effective diamondoid functionalization of gold electrodes in view of biosensing applications.

Abstract
Tetramantanes, and all diamondoid hydrocarbons, possess carbon frameworks that are superimposable upon the cubic diamond lattice. This characteristic is invaluable in assigning their (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra because it translates into repeating structural features, such as diamond-cage isobutyl moieties with distinctively complex methine to methylene signatures in COSY and HMBC data, connected to variable, but systematic linkages of methine and quaternary carbons. In all tetramantane C22H28 isomers, diamond-lattice structures result in long-range (4)JHH, W-coupling in COSY data, except where negated by symmetry; there are two highly symmetrical and one chiral tetramantane (showing seven (4)JHH). Isobutyl-cage methines of lower diamondoids and tetramantanes are the most shielded resonances in their (13)C spectra (<29.5 ppm). The isobutyl methylenes are bonded to additional methines and at least one quaternary carbon in the tetramantanes. W-couplings between these methines and methylenes clarify spin-network interconnections and detailed surface hydrogen stereochemistry. Vicinal couplings of the isobutyl methylenes reveal positions of the quaternary carbons: HMBC data then tie the more remote spin systems together. Diamondoid (13) C NMR chemical shifts are largely determined by α and β effects, however γ-shielding effects are important in [123]tetramantane. (1)H NMR chemical shifts generally correlate with numbers of 1,3-diaxial H-H interactions. Tight van der Waals contacts within [123]tetramantane's molecular groove, however, form improper hydrogen bonds, deshielding hydrogen nuclei inside the groove, while shielding those outside, indicated by Δδ of 1.47 ppm for geminal hydrogens bonded to C-3,21. These findings should be valuable in future NMR studies of diamondoids/nanodiamonds of increasing size.

Abstract
We performed a first-principles investigation on the structural, electronic and optical properties of crystals made of chemically functionalized adamantane molecules. Several molecular building blocks, formed by boron and nitrogen substitutional functionalizations, were considered to build zinc blende and wurtzite crystals, and the resulting structures presented large bulk moduli and cohesive energies, wide and direct bandgaps, and low dielectric constants (low-κ materials). Those properties provide stability for such structures up to room temperature, superior to those of typical molecular crystals. This indicates a possible road map for crystal engineering using functionalized diamondoids, with potential applications ranging from space filling between conducting wires in nanodevices to nano-electromechanical systems.

Abstract
We describe mono-substituted helical poly(phenyl)acetylene, a structural variation of polyacetylene that may overcome its problem: the lack of chemical stability. Helical polyacetylene shows an intrinsic stiff rod structure, which can be enhanced by the choice of suitable side groups. The structure looks like a narrow spiral with a conjugated electron system, covered by attached side groups spiralling in the opposite sense. We consider this unique material as a prototype for molecular electronic device use. It provides the electronic function, mechanical packaging and electrical insulation through a variety of side groups and exhibits useful self-assembly properties. We provide evidence that such materials, in many variations, show the expected overall structure, can be synthesized through living polymerization (which is necessary for the fabrication of monomers by monomer controlled structures), do show enhanced chemical stability, are amenable to self-assembly, may be deposited in an oriented fashion and do show electrical conductivity.
