Self-assembled porous templates allow pattern transfer to poly(dimethyl siloxane) sheets through surface wrinkling

Flow Behaviors of Polymer Colloids and Curing Resins Affect Pore Diameters and Heights of Periodic Porous Polymer Films to Direct Their Surface and Optical Characteristics

Manipulation of both pore diameters and heights of two-dimensional periodic porous polymer films is important to extensively control their characteristics. However, except for using different sized colloid templates in replication methods, an effective method that tunes these factors has rarely been reported. We found that both parameters are controllable by adjusting the flow behaviors of polystyrene colloids and curing resin precursors during the preparation of phenolic resin and poly(dimethylsiloxane) periodic porous films by embedding their precursors into colloidal crystal monolayers. We adjust the flow behaviors by either varying film preparation temperatures (≥glass transition temperature of polystyrene) or using the precursors mixed with different amounts of solvents that renders the colloids viscous. Consequently, the pore diameters and film heights change by 36-56 and 56-84%, respectively. Such modulation results in the change in height to diameter ratios and the areal fractions of resins at air-film interfaces, thereby significantly changing the water contact angles on these surfaces and their photonic characteristics. This straightforward method does not require additional steps, differently sized colloids, or different amounts of precursors for these parameter controls.

Nanoridge patterns on polymeric film by a photodegradation copying method for metallic nanowire networks

A simple photocopying method based on selective polymer photodegradation is proposed for fabricating topographical nanopatterns. Nanoridges are structured on a polyethylene terephthalate film due to ultraviolet shielding of silver nanowire networks.

Poly(cyclohexylethylene)-block-Poly(lactide) Oligomers for Ultrasmall Nanopatterning Using Atomic Layer Deposition

Poly(cyclohexylethylene)-block-poly(lactide) (PCHE-PLA) block polymers were synthesized through a combination of anionic polymerization, heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation and controlled ring-opening polymerization. Ordered thin films of PCHE-PLA with ultrasmall hexagonally packed cylinders oriented perpendicularly to the substrate surface were prepared by spin-coating and subsequent solvent vapor annealing for use in two distinct templating strategies. In one approach, selective hydrolytic degradation of the PLA domains generated nanoporous PCHE templates with an average pore diameter of 5 ± 1 nm corroborated by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering. Alternatively, sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) was employed to deposit Al2O3 selectively into the PLA domains of PCHE-PLA thin films. A combination of argon ion milling and O2 reactive ion etching (RIE) enabled the replication of the Al2O3 nanoarray from the PCHE-PLA template on diverse substrates including silicon and gold with feature diameters less than 10 nm.

Controlling and prevention of surface wrinkling via size-dependent critical wrinkling strain

Surface wrinkling may occur in a film-substrate system when the applied strain exceeds the critical value. However, the practically required strain for the onset of surface wrinkling can be different from the theoretically predicted value. Here we investigate the film size effect-dependent critical strain for the mechanical strain-induced surface wrinkling via a combination of experiments and theoretical analysis. In the poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based system fabricated by the smart combination of mechanical straining and selective O2 plasma (OP) exposure through Cu grids, the film size effect on the critical wrinkling strain is systematically studied by considering OP exposure duration, the mesh number and geometry of Cu grids. Meanwhile, a simple analytical solution revealing the film size effect is well established, which shows good consistency with the experimental results. This study provides an experimental and theoretical basis for finely tuning the critical wrinkling strain in a simple and quantitative manner, which can find a wide range of applications in such fields as microelectronic circuits and optical devices, where controlling and/or prevention of surface wrinkling are of great importance.

Cross-Linking the Surface of Cured Polydimethylsiloxane via Hyperthemal Hydrogen Projectile Bombardment

Cross-linking of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is increasingly important with recent focus on its top surface stiffness. In this paper, we demonstrate that hyperthermal hydrogen projectile bombardment, a surface sensitive cross-linking technology, is superior in enhancing the mechanical properties of a cured PDMS surface without significantly degrading its hydrophobicity. Both water contact angle measurements and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry are used to investigate the variations in surface chemistry and structure upon cross-linking. Using nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy, we confirm that the thickness of the cross-linked PDMS is controllable by the bombardment time, which opens opportunities for tuning cross-linking degree in compliance with arising requirements from the practice.
