US drinking water quality: exposure risk profiles for seven legacy and emerging contaminants

Magnetic bio-composite based on zirconium and chitosan modified activated carbon from peanut husk with enhanced antibacterial and adsorptive potential for alizarin red and congo red in wastewater

Creating new adsorbents is crucial for removing contaminants from water due to increased industrialization, which has worsened water pollution in recent years. In this study, a magnetic biocomposite, Zirconium (Zr)-doped chitosan (CS)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs)-peanut husk (PH)-based activated carbon (AC) (Zr-CS/Fe3O4-NPs@PH-AC), was synthesized for efficient removal of alizarin red (AR) and congo red (CR) dyes, alongside antibacterial applications. Characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis revealed micropores and mesopores development due to chemical activation of PH biomaterial and Fe3O4-NPs addition. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified functional groups and structural properties. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) analyzed magnetic properties. Optimal conditions for AR/CR removal were determined, including Zr-CS/Fe3O4-NPs@PH-AC dose, dye dose, contact time, and temperature, achieving maximum removal percentages. Experimentally determined maximum adsorption capacities for AR and CR were 374.3 and 154.1 mg·g-1, respectively. Cytotoxicity studies affirmed the eco-friendly and non-toxic nature of the adsorbent by exhibiting the reduction in the cell viability from 100 % to 88.68 % from the 0 to 200 μg·L-1 respectively. Additionally, the biocomposite exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) due to magnetic NPs. The material in this study shows extreme compatibility for numerous applications.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress responses and epigenetic alterations in arsenic carcinogenesis

Arsenic is a well-known human carcinogen whose environmental exposure via drinking water, food, and air impacts millions of people across the globe. Various mechanisms of arsenic carcinogenesis have been identified, ranging from damage caused by excessive production of free radicals and epigenetic alterations to the generation of cancer stem cells. A growing body of evidence supports the critical involvement of the endoplasmic stress-activated unfolded protein response (UPR) in promoting as well as suppressing cancer development/progression. Various in vitro and in vivo models have also demonstrated that arsenic induces the UPR via activation of the PERK, IRE1α, and ATF6 proteins. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of arsenic-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress and the role of each UPR pathway in the various cancer types with a focus on the epigenetic regulation and function of the ATF6 protein. The importance of UPR in arsenic carcinogenesis and cancer stem cells is a relatively new area of research that requires additional investigations via various omics-based and computational tools. These approaches will provide interesting insights into the mechanisms of arsenic-induced cancers for prospective target identification and development of novel anti-cancer therapies.

An economic evaluation of strategies to ensure safer drinking water in the homes of families with young children in select United States locations

Introduction

In the United States, safe, accessible drinking water is not equitable due to source water contamination, unreliable water treatment, or hazardous plumbing infrastructure. Drinking water free of lead, nitrates, and arsenic is vital for infant and young children's health.

Methods

Researchers conducted a study combining single-case study review methods and economic evaluation for 6 US policies or programs. Researchers used case-study findings, activity-based costing, publicly available US population data, and existing literature to create 5-year cost projections (2020-2024) for strategies to address lead, nitrates, or arsenic in drinking water from private wells or community water systems for families with low incomes and young children aged 0-5y. Researchers estimated the number of households reached and the costs by activity and payer of implementing each policy or program using case-specific geographic location and eligibility criteria.

Results

The total number of households reached varied from 295 to 135,000 depending on water source, population of focus, and geographic location. Focused strategies reached higher proportions of families with low incomes and young children. Community water system and state-wide strategies had the broadest reach. The total annual program cost per household that received information about their water quality ranged from $75 to $2,780. Of this cost, the portion paid by the household varied from $0.12 to $1,590, not including mitigation.

Conclusions

These findings can inform local decisions about policies and programs in communities seeking to increase awareness and access to safer drinking water, particularly in homes of families with low incomes and young children.
