Real-time visualization of the laser-plasma wakefield dynamics

The exploration of new acceleration mechanisms for compactly delivering high-energy particle beams has gained great attention in recent years. One alternative that has attracted particular interest is the plasma-based wakefield accelerator, which is capable of sustaining accelerating fields that are more than three orders of magnitude larger than those of conventional radio-frequency accelerators. In this device, acceleration is generated by plasma waves that propagate at nearly light speed, driven by intense lasers or charged particle beams. Here, we report on the direct visualization of the entire plasma wake dynamics by probing it with a femtosecond relativistic electron bunch. This includes the excitation of the laser wakefield, the increase of its amplitude, the electron injection, and the transition to the beam-driven plasma wakefield. These experimental observations provide first-hand valuable insights into the complex physics of laser beam-plasma interaction and demonstrate a powerful tool that can largely advance the development of plasma accelerators for real-time operation.

Chaotic dynamics in X-ray free-electron lasers with an optical undulator

In this work, the chaotic motions of relativistic electrons in X-ray free-electron lasers are investigated using an optical undulator in the presence of a magnetized ion-channel background. To miniaturize X-ray light sources, the optical undulator is a promising concept. The optical undulator provides higher optical gain than conventional magnetostatic undulators due to its micrometer wavelength. In addition, it reduces the required electron beam energy from several GeV to the multi-MeV range to produce X-ray pulses. The interaction of an optical undulator with an intense relativistic electron beam is a highly non-linear phenomenon that can lead to chaotic dynamics. At synchrotron radiation sources, the possibility of chaos control for X-ray FELs can be critical for certain classes of experimental studies. The equations of motion for a relativistic electron propagating through the optical undulator in the presence of a magnetized ion-channel can be derived from the Hamiltonian of the interaction region. Simulation results revealed that the intensity of the perturbation route from orderly behavior to chaos depends on the beam density, axial magnetic field strength, ion-channel density parameter, and pump laser undulator. Specific values of parameters were obtained for the transition from regular to chaotic paths. Bifurcation diagrams of the system were plotted to demonstrate the origin of chaos at a critical point, and Poincaré maps were created to distinguish between chaotic and orderly motions of electrons. The proposed new scheme can help to improve X-ray FELs, which have potential usages in basic sciences, medicine, and industry.

Unveiling the inner structure of electron pulses generated from a laser-wakefield accelerator

Self-started Kerr-lens mode-locked thin-disk oscillator

Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM) has been widely used in thin-disk oscillators to generate high-power femtosecond pulses. Here we demonstrate a Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator that can be self-started under two configurations. The first can deliver 13-W, 235-fs pulses at a repetition rate of 103 MHz; the second delivers 49 W at a repetition rate of 46.5 MHz, whose corresponding pulse energy of 1.05 µJ is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest energy ever obtained in self-started Kerr-lens mode-locked oscillators. A new method to initiate KLM in the form of optical perturbation in a thin-disk oscillator has also been demonstrated.
