Films based on TEMPO-oxidized chitosan nanoparticles: Obtaining and potential application as wound dressings

A series of novel films based on TEMPO-oxidized chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by casting method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to ascertain the chemical structure of TEMPO-oxidized chitosan. The surface morphology of the TEMPO-oxidized chitosan nanoparticles was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The physicochemical (area density, thickness, iodine sorption, roughness), functional (moisture sorption, liquid absorption capacity, weight loss upon contact with the liquid, and water vapor transmission rate), antibacterial, and antioxidant properties of films based on TEMPO-oxidized chitosan nanoparticles were also investigated. The physicochemical properties of the films varied widely: area density ranged from 77.83 ± 0.06 to184.46 ± 0.05 mg/cm2, thickness varied between 80.5 ± 1.6 and 200.5 ± 1.6 μm, iodine sorption spanned from 333.7 ± 2.1 to166.4 ± 2.2 mg I2/g, and roughness ranged from 4.1 ± 0.2 to 5.6 ± 0.3 nm. Similarly, the functional properties also varied significantly: moisture sorption ranged from 4.76 ± 0.03 to 9.62 ± 0.11 %, liquid absorption capacity was between 129.04 ± 0.24 and 159.33 ± 0.73 % after 24 h, weight loss upon contact with the liquid varied between 31.06 ± 0.35 and 45.88 ± 0.58 % after 24 h and water vapor transmission rate ranged from 1220.10 ± 2.91to1407.77 ± 5.22 g/m2 day. Despite the wide variations in physicochemical and functional properties, all films showed maximum bacterial reduction of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, although they exhibited low antioxidant activity. The results suggest that the films could be effectively utilized as antibacterial wound dressings.

Renewable biomass-based aerogels: from structural design to functional regulation

Global population growth and industrialization have exacerbated the nonrenewable energy crises and environmental issues, thereby stimulating an enormous demand for producing environmentally friendly materials. Typically, biomass-based aerogels (BAs), which are mainly composed of biomass materials, show great application prospects in various fields because of their exceptional properties such as biocompatibility, degradability, and renewability. To improve the performance of BAs to meet the usage requirements of different scenarios, a large number of innovative works in the past few decades have emphasized the importance of micro-structural design in regulating macroscopic functions. Inspired by the ubiquitous random or regularly arranged structures of materials in nature ranging from micro to meso and macro scales, constructing different microstructures often corresponds to completely different functions even with similar biomolecular compositions. This review focuses on the preparation process, design concepts, regulation methods, and the synergistic combination of chemical compositions and microstructures of BAs with different porous structures from the perspective of gel skeleton and pore structure. It not only comprehensively introduces the effect of various microstructures on the physical properties of BAs, but also analyzes their potential applications in the corresponding fields of thermal management, water treatment, atmospheric water harvesting, CO2 absorption, energy storage and conversion, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, biological applications, etc. Finally, we provide our perspectives regarding the challenges and future opportunities of BAs. Overall, our goal is to provide researchers with a thorough understanding of the relationship between the microstructures and properties of BAs, supported by a comprehensive analysis of the available data.

Polyglucuronic acids prepared from α-(1 → 3)-glucan by TEMPO-catalytic oxidation

2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-catalytic oxidation was applied to a water-insoluble α-(1 → 3)-glucan in water at pH 10 and room temperature (∼24 °C), with solid NaOCl·5H2O as the primary oxidant. Oxidation with NaOCl at 15 mmol/g gave a water-soluble TEMPO-oxidized product at a mass recovery ratio of 97 %. The carboxy content of the TEMPO-oxidized product was 5.3 mmol/g, which corresponds to a degree of C6-oxidation (DO) of 93 %. A new water-soluble α-(1 → 3)-polyglucuronic acid with a nearly homogeneous chemical structure was therefore quantitatively obtained. X-ray diffraction and solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopic analyses showed that the original α-(1 → 3)-glucan and its TEMPO-oxidized product with a carboxy content of 5.3 mmol/g had crystalline structures, whereas the oxidized products with DOs of 50 % and 66 % had almost disordered structures. The carboxy groups in the oxidized products were regioselectively methyl esterified with trimethylsilyl diazomethane, and analyzed by using size-exclusion chromatography with multi-angle laser-light scattering and refractive index detections. The results show that the original α-(1 → 3)-glucan and its oxidized products with DOs of 50 %, 66 %, and 93 % had weight-average degrees of polymerization of 671, 288, 54, and 45, respectively. Substantial depolymerization of the α-(1 → 3)-glucan molecules therefore occurred during catalytic oxidation, irrespective of the oxidation pH.

A Review on the Modification of Cellulose and Its Applications

The latest advancements in cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this study. We summarize the characteristics, modifications, applications, and properties of cellulose. Here, we discuss new breakthroughs in modified cellulose that allow for enhanced control. In addition to standard approaches, improvements in different techniques employed for cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this review. The various strategies for synthetic polymers are also discussed. The recent advancements in polymer production allow for more precise control, and make it possible to make functional celluloses with better physical qualities. For sustainability and environmental preservation, the development of cellulose green processing is the most abundant renewable substance in nature. The discovery of cellulose disintegration opens up new possibilities for sustainable techniques. Based on the review of recent scientific literature, we believe that additional chemical units of cellulose solubility should be used. This evaluation will evaluate the sustainability of biomass and processing the greenness for the long term. It appears not only crucial to dissolution, but also to the greenness of any process.

Ionic liquid-assisted synthesis of chitin-ethylene glycol hydrogels as electrolyte membranes for sustainable electrochemical capacitors

A novel chitin–ethylene glycol hybrid gel was prepared as a hydrogel electrolyte for electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [Bmim][Ac] as a chitin solvent. Examination of the morphology and topography of the chitin–EG membrane showed a homogeneous and smooth surface, while the thickness of the membrane obtained was 27 µm. The electrochemical performance of the chitin–EG hydrogel electrolyte was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements. The specific capacitance value of the EDLC with chitin–EG hydrogel electrolyte was found to be 109 F g⁻¹ in a potential range from 0 to 0.8 V. The tested hydrogel material was electrochemically stable and did not decompose even after 10,000 GCD cycles. Additionally, the EDLC test cell with chitin–EG hydrogel as electrolyte exhibited superior capacitance retention after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles compared with a commercial glass fiber membrane.
