Surface plasmon resonance extension through two-block metal-conducting polymer nanorods

Hybrid Metal-Ligand Interfacial Dipole Engineering of Functional Plasmonic Nanostructures for Extraordinary Responses of Optoelectronic Properties

Programmable manipulation of inorganic-organic interfacial electronic properties of ligand-functionalized plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) is the key parameter dictating their applications such as catalysis, photovoltaics, and biosensing. Here we report the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of gold triangular nanoprisms (Au TNPs) in solid state that are functionalized with dipolar, conjugated ligands. A library of thiocinnamate ligands with varying surface dipole moments were used to functionalize TNPs, which results in ∼150 nm reversible tunability of LSPR peak wavelength with significant peak broadening (∼230 meV). The highly adjustable chemical system of thiocinnamate ligands is capable of shifting the Au work function down to 2.4 eV versus vacuum, i.e., ∼2.9 eV lower than a clean Au (111) surface, and this work function can be modulated up to 3.3 eV, the largest value reported to date through the formation of organothiolate SAMs on Au. Interestingly, the magnitude of plasmonic responses and work function modulation is NP shape dependent. By combining first-principles calculations and experiments, we have established the mechanism of direct wave function delocalization of electrons residing near the Fermi level into hybrid electronic states that are mostly dictated by the inorganic-organic interfacial dipole moments. We determine that both interfacial dipole and hybrid electronic states, and vinyl conjugation together are the key to achieving such extraordinary changes in the optoelectronic properties of ligand-functionalized, plasmonic NPs. The present study provides a quantitative relationship describing how specifically constructed organic ligands can be used to control the interfacial properties of NPs and thus the plasmonic and electronic responses of these functional plasmonics for a wide range of plasmon-driven applications.

Near-infrared light-induced photoelectrochemical biosensor based on plasmon-enhanced upconversion nanocomposites for microRNA-155 detection with cascade amplifications

Herein, a novel near-infrared (NIR) light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor based on NaYF₄:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺@Bi₂MoO₆@Bi (NYF@BMO@Bi) nanocomposites was elaborately developed to achieve highly sensitive detection of microRNA-155 (miRNA-155). To realize signal enhancement, the coupled plasmonic bismuth (Bi) nanoparticles were constructed as an energy relay to facilitate the transfer of energy from NaYF₄:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺ to Bi₂MoO₆, ultimately enabling the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs of Bi₂MoO₆ under the irradiation of a 980 nm laser. For constructing biosensing system, the initial signal was firstly amplified after the addition of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in conjunction with the biofunctionalized NYF@BMO@Bi nanocomposites, which could catalyze the conversion of ascorbic acid 2-phosphate into ascorbic acid, and then consumed the photoacoustic holes created on the surface of Bi₂MoO₆ for the enlarging photocurrent production. Upon addition of target miRNA-155, the cascade signal amplification process was triggered while the ALP-modified DNA sequence was replaced and then followed by the initiation of a simulated biocatalytic precipitation reaction to attenuate the photocurrent response. On account of the NIR-light-driven and cascade amplifications strategy, the as-constructed biosensor was successfully utilized for the accurate determination of miRNA-155 ranging from 1 fM to 0.1 μM with a detection limit of 0.32 fM. We believed that the proposed nanocomposites-based NIR-triggered PEC biosensor could provide a promising platform for effective monitoring other tumor biomarkers in clinical diagnostics.

Multiple Stepwise Synthetic Pathways toward Complex Plasmonic 2D and 3D Nanoframes for Generation of Electromagnetic Hot Zones in a Single Entity

ConspectusRational design of nanocrystals with high controllability via wet chemistry is of critical importance in all areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology research. Specifically, morphologically complex plasmonic nanoparticles have received considerable attention because light-matter interactions are strongly associated with the size and shape of nanoparticles. Among many types of nanostructures, plasmonic nanoframes (NFs) with controllable structural intricacy could be excellent candidates as strong light-entrappers with inner voids as well as high surface area, leading to highly effective interaction with light and analytes compared to their solid counterparts. However, so far studies on single-rim-based NFs have suffered from insufficient near-field focusing capability due to their structural simplicity (e.g., a single rim or NF molded from simple platonic solids), which necessitates a conceptually new NF architecture. If one considers a stereoscopic nanostructure with dual, triple, and multiple resonant intra-nanogaps on each crystallographic facet of nanocrystals, unprecedented physicochemical properties could be expected. Realizing such complex multiple NFs with intraparticle surface plasmon coupling via localized surface plasmon resonance is very challenging due to the lack of synthetic strategic principles with systematic structural control, all of which require a deep understanding of surface chemistry. Moreover, realizing those complex architectures with high homogeneity in size and shape via a bottom-up method where diverse particle interactions are involved is more challenging. Although there have been several reports on NFs used for catalysis, techniques for production of structurally complex NFs with high uniformity and an understanding of the correlation between such complexity in a single plasmonic entity and electromagnetic near-field focusing have remained highly elusive.In this Account, we will summarize and highlight the rational synthetic pathways for the design of complex two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) NFs with unique inner rim structures and characterize their optical properties. This systematic strategy is based on publications from our group during the last 10 years. First, we will introduce a chemical step of shape transformation of triangular Au nanoplates to circular and hexagonal plates, which are used as sacrificial layers for the formation of NFs. Then, we will describe the methods on how to synthesize monorim-based plasmonic NFs using Pt scaffolds with different shapes and correlate with their electromagnetic near-field. Then, we will describe a multiple stepwise synthetic method for the formation of 2D complex NFs wherein different starting Au nanocrystals evolved from systematic shape transformation are used to produce circular, triangular, hexagonal, crescent, and Y-shaped inner hot zones. Then, we will discuss how one can synthesize NFs with multiple rims wherein rims with different diameters are concentrically connected, by exploiting chemical toolkits such as eccentric and concentric growth of Au, borrowing the concept of total synthesis that is frequently adopted in organic chemistry. We then introduce dual-rim-faceted NFs and frame-in-frame 3D matryoshka NF geometries via well-faceted growth of Au with high control of intra-nanogaps. Finally, and importantly, we will provide examples of more advanced hierarchical NF architectures produced by controlling geometrical shapes of nanoparticles, number of rims, and different components, leading to the expansion of the NF library.

Eye-Resolvable Surface-Plasmon-Enhanced Fluorescence Temperature Sensor

Temperature sensors are widely used in important fields such as daily home, medical care, and aerospace as a commonly used device for measuring temperature. Traditional temperature sensors such as thermocouples, thermal resistances, and infrared sensors are technically mature; however, they have limitations in the application environment, temperature measurement range, and temperature measurement accuracy. An eye-resolvable surface plasmon-enhanced fluorescence temperature sensor based on dual-emission Ag@SiO₂@CdS/ZnS composite nanoparticle film with multiple-parameter detectable signals and high response sensitivity was proposed in this work. The temperature sensor's x-chromaticity coordinate varied from 0.299 to 0.358 in the range of 77-297 K, while the y-chromaticity coordinate varied from 0.288 to 0.440, displaying eye-resolvable surface plasmon-enhanced fluorescence. The ratiometric response of two isolated photoluminescence (PL) peak-integrated areas located around 446 and 592 nm was found to be significantly temperature dependent, with a thermal sensitivity of 1.4% K^-1, which can be used as an additional parameter to measure the precise temperature. Furthermore, the surface state emission peak intensity was linearly related to temperature, with a correlation index Adj. R-Square of 99.8%. Multiple independent temperature estimates can help with self-calibration and improve the measurement accuracy. Our findings show that the designed sensors can detect low temperatures while maintaining stability and reproducibility.

Plasmon-Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Conductive Polymer-Based Nano-Heterojunction for Small Molecule Metabolites Diagnostics

Conductive polymers are promising electrode candidates in the nonenzymatic catalytic detection of small molecule metabolites, due to the tunable electronic conductivity and versatile modifiability. However, the complex catalytic reaction pathway of conductive polymers results in lower detection sensitivity and a narrower linear range compared with clinical metal-based and carbon-based electrodes. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), characterized by deep strong light-matter coupling, has great potential in driving surface catalytic reactions at an ultrafast rate. Here, we constructed a salix argyracea-like polypyrrole nanowires/silver nanoparticles (PPy/AgNPs) heterojunction electrode using polydopamine as a dopant and chelator. Through cyclic voltammetry, the Mott-Schottky curve, and COMSOL simulation, we demonstrated that the LSPR-excited photocarriers enhanced PPy/AgNPs electrode electrocatalysis. Thus, the detection current response and linear range were significantly improved under the LSPR excitation when taking glucose and hydrogen peroxide as models of small molecule metabolites. Furthermore, we discussed the LSPR-enhanced detection mechanism of PPy/AgNPs electrode from the aspects of the Tafel slope, the apparent electron diffusion coefficient, and the charge transfer resistance. This strategy opens a new avenue toward the design of LSPR-enhanced conductive polymer electrodes.

Metal-Polymer Heterojunction in Colloidal-Phase Plasmonic Catalysis

Plasmonic catalysis in the colloidal phase requires robust surface ligands that prevent particles from aggregation in adverse chemical environments and allow carrier flow from reagents to nanoparticles. This work describes the use of a water-soluble conjugated polymer comprising a thiophene moiety as a surface ligand for gold nanoparticles to create a hybrid system that, under the action of visible light, drives the conversion of the biorelevant NAD⁺ to its highly energetic reduced form NADH. A combination of advanced microscopy techniques and numerical simulations revealed that the robust metal-polymer heterojunction, rich in sulfonate functional groups, directs the interaction of electron-donor molecules with the plasmonic photocatalyst. The tight binding of polymer to the gold surface precludes the need for conventional transition-metal surface cocatalysts, which were previously shown to be essential for photocatalytic NAD⁺ reduction but are known to hinder the optical properties of plasmonic nanocrystals. Moreover, computational studies indicated that the coating polymer fosters a closer interaction between the sacrificial electron-donor triethanolamine and the nanoparticles, thus enhancing the reactivity.

Gold Nanorods: The Most Versatile Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Gold nanorods (NRs), pseudo-one-dimensional rod-shaped nanoparticles (NPs), have become one of the burgeoning materials in the recent years due to their anisotropic shape and adjustable plasmonic properties. With the continuous improvement in synthetic methods, a variety of materials have been attached around Au NRs to achieve unexpected or improved plasmonic properties and explore state-of-the-art technologies. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest progress on Au NRs, the most versatile anisotropic plasmonic NPs. We present a representative overview of the advances in the synthetic strategies and outline an extensive catalogue of Au-NR-based heterostructures with tailored architectures and special functionalities. The bottom-up assembly of Au NRs into preprogrammed metastructures is then discussed, as well as the design principles. We also provide a systematic elucidation of the different plasmonic properties associated with the Au-NR-based structures, followed by a discussion of the promising applications of Au NRs in various fields. We finally discuss the future research directions and challenges of Au NRs.

Controlled Assembly of Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Static to Dynamic Nanostructures

The spatial arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles can dramatically affect their interaction with electromagnetic waves, which offers an effective approach to systematically control their optical properties and manifest new phenomena. To this end, significant efforts were made to develop methodologies by which the assembly structure of metal nanoparticles can be controlled with high precision. Herein, recent advances in bottom-up chemical strategies toward the well-controlled assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles, including multicomponent and multifunctional systems are reviewed. Further, it is discussed how the progress in this area has paved the way toward the construction of smart dynamic nanostructures capable of on-demand, reversible structural changes that alter their properties in a predictable and reproducible manner. Finally, this review provides insight into the challenges, future directions, and perspectives in the field of controlled plasmonic assemblies.

LED control of gene expression in a nanobiosystem composed of metallic nanoparticles and a genetically modified E. coli strain

BACKGROUND

Within the last decade, genetic engineering and synthetic biology have revolutionized society´s ability to mass-produce complex biological products within genetically-modified microorganisms containing elegantly designed genetic circuitry. However, many challenges still exist in developing bioproduction processes involving genetically modified microorganisms with complex or multiple gene circuits. These challenges include the development of external gene expression regulation methods with the following characteristics: spatial-temporal control and scalability, while inducing minimal permanent or irreversible system-wide conditions. Different stimuli have been used to control gene expression and mitigate these challenges, and they can be characterized by the effect they produce in the culture media conditions. Invasive stimuli that cause permanent, irreversible changes (pH and chemical inducers), non-invasive stimuli that cause partially reversible changes (temperature), and non-invasive stimuli that cause reversible changes in the media conditions (ultrasound, magnetic fields, and light).

METHODS

Opto-control of gene expression is a non-invasive external trigger that complies with most of the desired characteristics of an external control system. However, the disadvantage relies on the design of the biological photoreceptors and the necessity to design them to respond to a different wavelength for every bioprocess needed to be controlled or regulated in the microorganism. Therefore, this work proposes using biocompatible metallic nanoparticles as external controllers of gene expression, based on their ability to convert light into heat and the capacity of nanotechnology to easily design a wide array of nanostructures capable of absorbing light at different wavelengths and inducing plasmonic photothermal heating.

RESULTS

Here, we designed a nanobiosystem that can be opto-thermally triggered using LED light. The nanobiosystem is composed of biocompatible gold nanoparticles and a genetically modified E. coli with a plasmid that allows mCherry fluorescent protein production at 37 °C in response to an RNA thermometer.

CONCLUSIONS

The LED-triggered photothermal protein production system here designed offers a new, cheaper, scalable switchable method, non-destructive for living organisms, and contribute toward the evolution of bioprocess production systems.

Low-Loss Broadband Transverse Electric Pass Hybrid Plasmonic Fiber Polarizers Using Metallic Nanomaterials

Metals were for decades perceived as devoid of interesting optical properties that could be harnessed for optical components and devices. However, with the development of accurate nanofabrication techniques and precise control over architectural parameters, metals can be structured and characterized on the nanoscale. Metallic plasmonic nanomaterials exhibit a number of unique structural and optical properties, which offer the potential for developing new types of plasmonic devices. Here, we demonstrate a low-loss broadband polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic fiber structure using metals as polarization-selective absorption materials. The polarization mechanism, design, fabrication, and characteristics of the plasmonic polarizers are investigated theoretically, numerically, and experimentally. The theoretical analysis predicts that the polarization-selective absorption with insensitivity to wavelength enables hybrid plasmonic fibers to function as broadband polarizers. Numerical simulations give the comparison of the polarization-selective absorption of various metallic nanomaterials (Ag, Au, In, Al, Cr) and show that aluminum is regarded as the optimum absorption material for the plasmonic polarizer. Experimental results show that through precise control over geometrical parameters, this device is capable of offering a high polarization extinction ratio (PER) of over 40 dB and a low insertion loss (IL) of less than 1.3 dB in the wavelength region of 810.1-870.0 nm. Compared with commercial birefringent-crystal-fiber polarizers, the plasmonic fiber polarizer has a better PER and IL bandwidth. These merits, combined with a compact and robust configuration, enable the plasmonic polarizer to have great potential in a broad range of applications.

(Gold nanorod core)/(poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) shell) nanostructures and their monolayer arrays for plasmonic switching

(Gold nanorod core)/(poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) shell) nanostructures are prepared by the surfactant-assisted oxidative polymerization of 3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene on the surface of gold nanorods (NRs). The PEDOT shell exhibits distinct dielectric properties at doped and undoped states, which allows the manipulation of plasmonic responses of the Au nanorod core. The shift in plasmon resonance induced by the dedoping of PEDOT is found to be associated with the overlap between the plasmon resonance band of the core/shell nanostructure and the spectral region where the largest refractive index variation of PEDOT occurs, as well as with the type of the dedopant. Macroscopic two-dimensional (2D) monolayer arrays of core/shell nanostructures with controlled particle number densities are fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates by electrophoretic deposition. A reversible plasmonic shift of about 70 nm is obtained on the core/shell nanostructure monolayer array with a number density of around 18 particles per μm2. Our design of colloidal (Au nanorod core)/(PEDOT shell) nanostructures and their 2D monolayer arrays paves the way for the fabrication of high-performance plasmonic switches in large-scale practical usages as well as for the preparation of advanced, programmable chromic materials for a broad range of applications, such as smart windows, anti-counterfeiting tags, and medical and environmental sensors.

Polarization Selectivity of the Thin-Metal-Film Plasmon-Assisted Fiber-Optic Polarizer

The interaction between light and metallic nanostructures leads to many impressive achievements and has a wide range of applications. The thin-metal-film plasmon-assisted fiber-optic polarizer is one of the essential applications. However, the polarization mechanism and the transmitted polarization of the plasmon-assisted polarizer have given rise to controversy over the past decade. Which of the polarizations is preferentially transmitted through the polarizer? The transverse electric polarization or the transverse magnetic polarization? Here, special emphasis is placed upon the polarization mechanism and the transmitted polarization of thin-metal-film plasmon-assisted fiber polarizers. We first investigate the polarization mechanism of the polarizers theoretically and numerically. Furthermore, a novel approach is proposed to demonstrate the transmitted polarization in the plasmon-assisted fiber polarizers experimentally. We demonstrate that the polarization mechanism is based on the polarization selective absorption of the metallic material, and the transverse electric polarization is the only transmitted polarization of the metallic plasmon-assisted polarizer. Moreover, the plasmon-assisted polarizer can offer a high polarization extinction ratio (33.1 dB) and a low insertion loss (1.1 dB) at room temperature and have excellent temperature stability in the range of -48 to 82 °C. Experimental results agree well with our theoretical and numerical analyses. The findings clarify the confusion about the polarization mechanism and the transmitted polarization of metallic plasmon-assisted fiber polarizers over the past decade, providing new ground for the exploration of polarization-sensitive optical systems, with good potential applications in the fields of optical sensors, plasmonic lasers, coherent optical communications, and biosensor systems.

Development of a Theoretical Model That Predicts Optothermal Energy Conversion of Gold Metallic Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be found in different shapes and sizes, which determine their chemical and physical characteristics. Physical and chemical properties of metallic NPs can be tuned by changing their shape, size, and surface chemistry; therefore, this has led to their use in a wide variety of applications in many industrial and academic sectors. One of the features of metallic NPs is their ability to act as optothermal energy converters, where they absorb light at a specific wavelength and heat up their local nanosurfaces. This feature has been used in many applications where metallic NPs get coupled with thermally responsive systems to trigger an optical response. In this study, we synthesized AuNPs that are spherical in shape with an average diameter of 20.07 nm. This work assessed simultaneously theoretical and experimental techniques to evaluate the different factors that affect heat generation at the surface of AuNPs when exposed to a specific light wavelength. The results indicated that laser power, concentration of AuNPs, time × laser power interaction, and time illumination, were the most important factors that contributed to the temperature change exhibited in the AuNPs solution. We report a regression model that allows predicting heat generation and temperature changes with residual standard errors of less than 4%. These results are highly relevant in the future design and development of applications where metallic NPs are incorporated into systems to induce a temperature change triggered by light exposure.

Photothermal Effect in Plasmonic Nanotip for LSPR Sensing

The influence of heat generation on the conventional process of LSPR based sensing has not been explored thus far. Therefore, a need exists to draw attention toward the heat generation issue during LSPR sensing as it may affect the refractive index of the analyte, leading to incorrect sensory conclusions. This manuscript addresses the connection between the photo-thermal effect and LSPR. We numerically analyzed the heat performance of a gold cladded nanotip. The numerical results predict a change in the micro-scale temperature in the microenvironment near the nanotip. These numerical results predict a temperature increase of more than 20 K near the apex of the nanotip, which depends on numerous factors including the input optical power and the diameter of the fiber. We analytically show that this change in the temperature influences a change in the refractive index of the microenvironment in the vicinity of the nanotip. In accordance with our numerical and analytical findings, we experimentally show an LSPR shift induced by a change in the input power of the source. We believe that our work will bring the importance of temperature dependence in nanotip based LSPR sensing to the fore.

Conductive polymer nanoantennas for dynamic organic plasmonics

Being able to dynamically shape light at the nanoscale is one of the ultimate goals in nano-optics¹. Resonant light-matter interaction can be achieved using conventional plasmonics based on metal nanostructures, but their tunability is highly limited due to a fixed permittivity². Materials with switchable states and methods for dynamic control of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale are therefore desired. Here we show that nanodisks of a conductive polymer can support localized surface plasmon resonances in the near-infrared and function as dynamic nano-optical antennas, with their resonance behaviour tunable by chemical redox reactions. These plasmons originate from the mobile polaronic charge carriers of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf) polymer network. We demonstrate complete and reversible switching of the optical response of the nanoantennas by chemical tuning of their redox state, which modulates the material permittivity between plasmonic and dielectric regimes via non-volatile changes in the mobile charge carrier density. Further research may study different conductive polymers and nanostructures and explore their use in various applications, such as dynamic meta-optics and reflective displays.

Development of Dopamine Sensor Using Silver Nanoparticles and PEG-Functionalized Tapered Optical Fiber Structure

This article presents a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon based optical fiber sensor (OFS) for the detection of dopamine (DA). DA functions as a hormone and a neurotransmitter in the human body and plays a crucial role in the peripheral system. To develop the OFS for DA detection, taper fiber probe was fabricated and immobilized with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and functionalized with Polyethylene glycol (PEG). The developed sensor shows the great selectivity in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) oxidation due to PEG coating. The morphology of the AgNPs and uniformity of coating over the surface of sensing probe were confirmed with UV-visible spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The calibration curve is found to be linear over the range of 10 nM-1 μM with the lowest detection limit of 0.058 μM. Also provides a wide dynamic range of detection (10 nm-100 μM). The parameters responsible for the performance of OFS, such as sensitivity, detection limit, and selectivity are greatly improved in the proposed sensor. The applicability of the proposed sensor has been validated and have the potential to use for routine diagnosis.

Development of a Gold Nanoparticle-Functionalized Surface Plasmon Resonance Assay for the Sensitive Detection of Monoclonal Antibodies and Its Application in Pharmacokinetics

As a prominent human therapeutic, therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have attracted increasing attention in the past decade due to their high-targeting specificity, low toxicity, and prolonged efficacy. Systematic pharmacokinetic analysis of mAbs not only largely facilitates the understanding of their biologic functions but also promotes the development of therapeutic drug discovery, early clinical trial implementation, and therapeutic monitoring. However, the extremely complex nature of biomatrices and the especially low dosages of mAbs make their detection in biomatrices and further pharmacokinetic analysis highly challenging. Therefore, a method capable of reliably, quickly, and sensitively quantifying mAbs in biomatrices is urgently needed. In this work, we developed and evaluated an gold nanoparticle-functionalized surface plasmon resonance assay for cetuximab (C225) detection and pharmacokinetic analysis in rhesus monkeys. Combining its advantages of label-free pretreatment and amplified signal response, the lower limit of quantitation of C225 in monkey serum was reduced to 0.0125 μg/ml, and the linear range had an order of magnitude comparable to that of an ELISA-based method. Furthermore, the pharmacokinetics of C225 in rhesus monkeys was studied after intravenous infusions of single doses at 7.5, 24, and 75 mg/kg. The concentration of C225 in monkey serum was detectable after dosing for 720 hours. We believe that this new strategy will be applicable as a general protocol for mAb quantification, pharmacokinetic characteristic determination, and toxicokinetic analysis during drug development.

Tricomponent Multiblock Nanorods for Fourier Transform Surface Plasmon Resonance and Its Chemical Sensing

In this study, we report a new mode of chemical sensing using Fourier transform surface plasmon resonance with tricomponent nanorods (Au, Ni, and Pt). By applying an external magnetic field, magnetically responsive multiblock nanorods fluctuate periodically, producing sigmoidal optical responses that are represented as a dominant frequency peak after Fourier transform conversion. Adding H₂O₂ to the solution under an external magnetic field perturbed the periodic nanorod rotation due to a catalytic reaction between the Pt segment and H₂O₂, which produces catalytic random fluctuation states. The target chemicals were detected by measuring the frequency domain recovery time between two competing states, the magnetic dominant state and the catalytic random state. These two states can be controlled and maximized by nanorod block design, demonstrating the effectiveness of our chemical sensing design using Fourier transform surface plasmon resonance.

Plasmon-mediated nonradiative energy transfer from a conjugated polymer to a plane of graphene-nanodot-supported silver nanoparticles: an insight into characteristic distance

Hybrid nanostructures comprising conjugated polymers (CPs) and plasmonic metals show excellent performance in light harvesting. However, the energy transfer mechanism of the CP film to nearby metal nanoparticles, especially knowledge of the characteristic distance, is still unclear. Here, quenching of the emission of a CP film in proximity to a monolayer of graphene-nanodot-supported silver nanoparticles (GND-Ag NPs) is investigated. Uniform Ag NPs with D = 3.2 nm were grown on GNDs in situ under mild light irradiation, and a series of bilayer structures of GND-Ag NPs/CPs were constructed by spin-coating blue, green and red light-emitting poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV),respectively, on top of the GND-Ag NP plane. The spacer distance was controlled by the layers of assembled polyelectrolytes. Both steady and transient photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed emission quenching of the bilayer structures, providing the maximum efficiency of 99% for the F8BT films. The surface density of GND-Ag NPs and the spacer distance-dependent PL quenching data were analyzed within the plasmonic resonant energy transfer model, and the extracted characteristic distances are 6 nm, 3 nm and 10 nm for the PFO, F8BT and MEH-PPV systems, respectively. Current-sensing atomic force microscopy shows that the GND-Ag NPs/F8BT film exhibits enhanced electrical conductivity. These results are believed to be important for the development of plasmonic enhanced polymer photovoltaics and photocatalysis.

Strong Coupling between a Quasi-single Molecule and a Plasmonic Cavity in the Trapping System

We theoretically investigate the strong coupling phenomenon between a quasi-single molecule and a plasmonic cavity based on the blue-detuned trapping system. The trapping system is made up of a metallic nanohole array. A finite-difference time-domain method is employed to simulate the system, and the molecule is treated as a dipole in simulations. By calculating the electromagnetic field distributions, we obtain the best position for trapping a molecule, and we get the strong coupling phenomenon that there are two splitting peaks in the transmission spectrum when the molecule is trapped in the structure, while only one peak is observed in the one without the molecule. We also find that only when the molecule polarization parallels to the incident light wave vector can we observe a strong coupling phenomenon.

Bidirectional plasmonic coloration with gold nanoparticles by wavelength-switched photoredox reaction

Reversible tuning of localized plasmon resonance that is supported by nanometric-sized metal particles holds potentially huge benefits in terms of manipulating light for widespread photonic applications. Although the practice of altering the frequency and the amplitude of plasmon resonance on gold nanoparticles is relatively well established, dynamic tuning by all-optical approaches for coloration has long been hindered due to limited implementation approaches with which gold nanomaterials can be photosynthetically manipulated. Here, we develop a wavelength-switched photoredox approach and demonstrate bidirectional tuning of the plasmonic resonance of crystalline gold nanoparticles for reversible surface-plasmon-resonance-based coloration. The reversible plasmonic resonance control is achieved by a combination of photoreduction of gold ions and photooxidation of gold nanorods by switching the illumination between UV and near-UV-Vis light, respectively. As one example, the plasmon resonance peak of gold nanorods is reversibly tuned between 630 and 660 nm by switching the light wavelengths. Utilizing wavelength-switchable photoredox reactions, we demonstrate reversible color patterning by mask illuminating a gold nanorod sample solution. This approach offers not only an easy-to-implement method for realizing non-contact modulating plasmon-resonance based colors, but also new opportunities for reversibly tuning local plasmon resonance by all-optically shaping single nanoparticles. This holds great potential for a wide range of applications, including active-substrate-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), erasable optical data storage and dynamic laser color printing, among others.
