Earthquake lubrication and healing explained by amorphous nanosilica

Supercritical CO2 -induced New Chemical Bond of C-O-Si in Graphdiyne to Achieve Robust Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism

The realization of ferromagnetic ordering of two-dimensional (2D) carbon material graphdiyne (GDY) has attracted great attention due to its promising application in spin semiconductor devices. However, the absence of localized spins makes the pristine GDY intrinsically nonferromagnetic. Herein, we report the realization of robust room-temperature (RT) ferromagnetism (FM) with Curie temperature (T_C ) up to 325 K for GDY Nanosheets (GDYNs) by supercritical CO₂ (SC CO₂ ). Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the new chemical bond of C-O-Si can be formed because of the unique effect of SC CO₂ , which help to enhance the charge transfer and generates long-range ferromagnetic order. The RT saturation magnetization (M_S ) reaches 1.125 emu/g, which is much higher than that of carbon-based materials reported up to now. Meanwhile, by changing the conditions of SC CO₂ such as pressure, ferromagnetic responses can be manipulated, which is great for potential spintronics applications of GDY.

Intermittent lab earthquakes in dynamically weakening fault gouge

Large and destructive earthquakes on mature faults in Earth's crust occur as slip in a layer of a fine granular material-fault gouge-produced by comminution during sliding^1,2. A range of insights into the frictional resistance of faults-one of the main factors controlling earthquake nucleation, dynamic propagation and arrest, and hence the destructive ground shaking of earthquakes^2,3-has been obtained in experiments with spatially uniform slip imposed in small samples^2,4-21. However, how various features of gouge friction combine to determine spontaneous progression of earthquakes is difficult to study in the lab owing to substantial challenges with sample sizes and adequate imaging²². Here, using lab experiments, we show that spontaneously propagating dynamic ruptures navigate a fault region with fine rock gouge through complex, intermittent slip processes with dramatic friction evolution. These include repeated arrest of rupture propagation caused by friction strengthening at lower slip rates and dynamic earthquake re-nucleation enabled by pronounced rapid friction weakening at higher slip rates consistent with flash heating^8,12,23. The spontaneous repeated weakening and strengthening of friction in fine rock gouge highlights the fundamental dependence of friction on slip rate and associated processes, such as shear heating, localization and delocalization of shear, and dilation and compaction of the shear layer^6,7,9-21. Our findings expand experimental support^9,11 of the concept that co-seismic weakening may enable earthquake rupture to break through stable fault regions^24,25, with substantial implications for seismic hazard.

Nanometric flow and earthquake instability

Fault zones accommodate relative motion between tectonic blocks and control earthquake nucleation. Nanocrystalline fault rocks are ubiquitous in "principal slip zones" indicating that these materials are determining fault stability. However, the rheology of nanocrystalline fault rocks remains poorly constrained. Here, we show that such fault rocks are an order of magnitude weaker than their microcrystalline counterparts when deformed at identical experimental conditions. Weakening of the fault rocks is hence intrinsic, it occurs once nanocrystalline layers form. However, it is difficult to produce "rate weakening" behavior due to the low measured stress exponent, n, of 1.3 ± 0.4 and the low activation energy, Q, of 16,000 ± 14,000 J/mol implying that the material will be strongly "rate strengthening" with a weak temperature sensitivity. Failure of the fault zone nevertheless occurs once these weak layers coalesce in a kinematically favored network. This type of instability is distinct from the frictional instability used to describe crustal earthquakes.

Nanocrystalline Principal Slip Zones and Their Role in Controlling Crustal Fault Rheology

Principal slip zones (PSZs) are narrow (<10 cm) bands of localized shear deformation that occur in the cores of upper-crustal fault zones where they accommodate the bulk of fault displacement. Natural and experimentally-formed PSZs consistently show the presence of nanocrystallites in the <100 nm size range. Despite the presumed importance of such nanocrystalline (NC) fault rock in controlling fault mechanical behavior, their prevalence and potential role in controlling natural earthquake cycles remains insufficiently investigated. In this contribution, we summarize the physical properties of NC materials that may have a profound effect on fault rheology, and we review the structural characteristics of NC PSZs observed in natural faults and in experiments. Numerous literature reports show that such zones form in a wide range of faulted rock types, under a wide range of conditions pertaining to seismic and a-seismic upper-crustal fault slip, and frequently show an internal crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) and partial amorphization, as well as forming glossy or “mirror-like” slip surfaces. Given the widespread occurrence of NC PSZs in upper-crustal faults, we suggest that they are of general significance. Specifically, the generally high rates of (diffusion) creep in NC fault rock may play a key role in controlling the depth limits to the seismogenic zone.
