Crystalline nanosheets of three-dimensional supramolecular frameworks with uniform thickness and high stability

Fabricating three dimensional (3D) supramolecular frameworks (SMFs) into stable crystalline nanosheets remains a great challenge due to the homogeneous and weak inter-building block interactions along 3D directions. Herein, crystalline nanosheets of a 3D SMF with a uniform thickness of 4.8 ± 0.1 nm immobilized with Pt nanocrystals on the surface (Q[8]/Pt NSs) were fabricated via the solid-liquid reaction between cucurbit[8]uril/H2PtCl6 single crystals and hydrazine hydrate with the help of gas and heat yielded during the reaction process. A series of experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the ultrahigh stability of Q[8]/Pt NSs due to the high density hydrogen bonding interaction among neighboring Q[8] molecules. This in turn endows Q[8]/Pt NSs with excellent photocatalytic and continuous thermocatalytic CO oxidation performance, representing the thus-far reported best Pt nano-material-based catalysts.

Tailoring Type III Porous Ionic Liquids for Enhanced Liquid-Liquid Two-Phase Catalysis

Porous Ionic Liquids (PILs) have gained attention but facing challenges in catalysis, especially in liquid-liquid two-phase reactions due to limited catalytic sites and hydrophilicity control. This work engineered a Type III PILs (PILS-M) using zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) confined phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) as the microporous framework and N-butyl pyridine bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) imide ionic liquid ([Bpy][NTf2]) as the solvent. The PILS-M not only combines the advantages of traditional ionic liquids and microporous frameworks, including excellent extraction, high dispersion of catalytically active species, remarkable stability, etc., but also can make the inner surface of ZIF-8 turned to be hydrophilic that favors the contact between aqueous hydrogen peroxide oxidant and catalytically active sites for the promotion of catalytic performance in reactive extractive desulfurization (REDS) processes of fuel oils. This study demonstrates Type III PILs' potential as catalysts for sustainable chemical processes, offering insights into versatile PILs applications in diverse fields.

Luminescent Supramolecular Ionic Frameworks based on Organic Fluorescent Polycations and Polyanionic Phosphorescent Metal Clusters

Emissive ionic supramolecular frameworks are designed by associating tetraphenylethylene-based tetra-cationic units and di-anionic molybdenum or tetra-anionic rhenium octahedral clusters. Obtained structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The emission properties of the hybrids were investigated as dry powders or in various solvents by one photon and two photon absorption leading to a O2 concentration dependent luminescence color for the Mo based hybrid.

In Situ Grown Coordination-Supramolecular Layer Holding 3D Charged Channels for Highly Reversible Zn Anodes

Dynamic reversible noncovalent interactions make supramolecular framework (SF) structures flexible and designable. A three-dimensional (3D) growth of such frameworks is beneficial to improve the structure stability while maintaining unique properties. Here, through the ionic interaction of the polyoxometalate cluster, coordination of zinc ions with cationic terpyridine, and hydrogen bonding of grafted carboxyl groups, the construction of a 3D SF at a well-crystallized state is realized. The framework can grow in situ on the Zn surface, further extending laterally into a full covering without defects. Relying on the dissolution and the postcoordination effects, the 3D SF layer is used as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase to improve the Zn-anode performance. The uniformly distributed clusters within nanosized pores create a negatively charged nanochannel, accelerating zinc ion transfer and homogenizing zinc deposition. The 3D SF/Zn symmetric cells demonstrate high stability for over 3000 h at a current density of 5 mA cm-2.

12 Connecting Sites Linked Three-dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with Intrinsic Non-interpenetrated shp Topology for Photocatalytic H2O2 Synthesis

Developing high connectivity (>8) three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) towards new topologies and functions remains a great challenge owing to the difficulty in getting high connectivity organic building blocks. This however represents the most important step towards promoting the diversity of COFs due to the still limited dynamic covalent bonds available for constructing COFs at this stage. Herein, highly connected phthalocyanine-based (Pc-based) 3D COFs MPc-THHI-COFs (M=H2, Ni) were afforded from the reaction between 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacarboxyphthalocyanine M(TAPc) (M=H2, Ni) and 5,5',5'',5''',5'''',5'''''-(triphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexayl)hexa(isophthalohydrazide) (THHI) with 12 connecting sites. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis together with theoretical simulations and transmission electron microscopy reveals their crystalline nature with an unprecedented non-interpenetrated shp topology. Experimental and theoretical investigations disclose the broadened visible light absorption range and narrow optical band gap of MPc-THHI-COFs. This in combination with their 3D nanochannels endows them with efficient photocatalysis performance for H2O2 generation from O2 and H2O via 2e- oxygen reduction reaction and 2e- water oxidation reaction under visible-light irradiation (λ >400 nm). This work provides valuable result for the development of high connectivity functional COFs towards diverse application potentials.

Enantiomeric filtration separation of supramolecular framework membranes

A two-dimensional supramolecular framework with a tetragonal structure is constructed via host-guest interaction of a pillar[5]arene grafted polyanion with a modified porphyrin. The membrane of the framework with a chiral counterion exhibits enantiomeric selectivity during the filtration of racemic molecules with amino groups, demonstrating broadened potential in chiral separations.

Biodegradable electrospinning superhydrophilic nanofiber membranes for ultrafast oil-water separation

Although membrane technology has attracted considerable attention for oily wastewater treatment, the plastic waste generated from discarded membranes presents an immediate challenge for achieving eco-friendly separation. We designed on-demand biodegradable superhydrophilic membranes composed of polylactic acid nanofibers in conjunction with polyethylene oxide hydrogels using electrospinning technology for ultrafast purification of oily water. Our results showed that the use of the polyethylene oxide hydrogels increased the number of hydrogen bonds formed between the membrane surface and water molecules by 357.6%. This converted hydrophobic membranes into superhydrophilic ones, which prevented membrane fouling and accelerated emulsion penetration through the membranes. The oil-in-water emulsion permeance of our newly designed nanofiber membranes increased by 61.9 times (2.1 × 104 liters per square meter per hour per bar) with separation efficiency >99.6%, which was superior to state-of-the-art membranes. Moreover, the formation of hydrogen bonds was found to accelerate polylactic acid biodegradation into lactic acid by over 30%, offering a promising approach for waste membrane treatment.

Structure Transformation and Morphologic Modulation of Supramolecular Frameworks for Nanoseparation and Enzyme Loading

Supramolecular framework (SF) encourages the emergence of porous structures with molecular flexibility while the dimension and morphology controls are less involved even though critical factors are vital for various utilizations. Targeting this purpose, two isolated components are designed and their stepped combinations via ionic interaction, metal coordination, and hydrogen bond into framework assembly with two morphologic states are realized. The zinc coordination to an ionic complex of polyoxometalate with three cationic terpyridine ligands constructs 2D hexagonal SF structure. A further growth along perpendicular direction driven by hydrogen bonding between grafted mannose groups leads to 3D SF assemblies, providing a modulation superiority in one framework for multiple utilizations. The large area of multilayered SF sheet affords a filtration membrane for strict separation of nanoparticles/proteins under gently reduced pressures while the granular SF assembly demonstrates an efficient carrier to load and fix horse radish peroxidase with maintained activity for enzymatic catalysis.

Non-Stop Switching Separation of Superfine Solid/Liquid Dispersed Phases in Oil and Water Systems Using Polymer-Assisted Framework Fiber Membranes

Fabricating filtration membranes with wide applicability and high efficiency is always a challenge in the precise separation of small colloidal particles under mild conditions. For this purpose, a strategy mixing supramolecular framework fiber with polymer is adopted. The fibrous assembly in the gel state provides uniform nanopores for both channel and interception and controlled wettability for lyophilic/lyophobic switching. The used polymer fills the gaps between fiber assemblies and improves the mechanical property. The composite membrane shows both under-oil superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobic nature, which allows the conversions via in situ modulation of joystick solvents. Based on surface wetting and size-sieving, ultrafine hard nanoparticles dispersing in both hydrophobic organic solvents and water are selectively sieved. In addition, on-demand separation of water-in-oil and oil-in-water microemulsions without and with surfactants as systems containing soft droplets are realized. The smallest cut-off size of ≈3 nm is achieved for both hard and soft emulsions, while separation efficiency maintains during sustained in situ reversible switches.

Polyoxometalate-based frameworks for photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis

Polyoxometalate-based frameworks (POM-based frameworks) are extended structures assembled from metal-oxide cluster units and organic frameworks that simultaneously possess the virtues of POMs and frameworks. They have been attracting immense attention because of their diverse architectures and charming topologies and also due to their probable application prospects in the areas of catalysis, separation, and energy storage. In this review, the recent progress in POM-based frameworks including POM-based metal organic frameworks (PMOFs), POM-based covalent organic frameworks (PCOFs), and POM-based supramolecular frameworks (PSFs) is systematically summarized. The design and construction of a POM-based framework and its application in photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis are introduced, respectively. Finally, our brief outlooks on the current challenges and future development of POM-based frameworks for photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis are provided.

Self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin-pillar[5]arene molecules into supramolecular nanoassemblies: morphology control by stimulus responsiveness and host-guest interactions

Macrocyclic molecules have attracted considerable attention as new functional materials owing to their unique pore size structure and excellent host-guest properties. With the development of macrocyclic compounds, the properties of mono-modified macrocyclic materials can be improved by incorporating pillar[n]arene or cyclodextrin derivatives through bridge bonds. Herein, we report the self-assembly of amphiphilic di-macrocyclic host molecules (H1-2) based on β-cyclodextrin and pillar[5]arene units linked by azophenyl or biphenyl groups. In a H₂O/DMSO (19 : 1, v/v) mixed polar solvent, an amphiphile H1 with an azophenyl group self-assembled into unique nanorings and exhibited an obvious photoresponsive colour change. This photochromic behaviour makes H1 suitable for application in carbon paper materials on which arbitrary patterns can be erased and rewritten. The amphiphile H2, with a biphenyl unit, self-assembled into spherical micelles. These differences indicate that various linker units lead to changes in the intermolecular and hydrophilic-hydrophobic interactions. In a CHCl₃/DMSO (19 : 1, v/v) mixed low-polarity solvent, the amphiphile H1 self-assembled into fibrous aggregates, whereas the molecule H2 assembled into unique nanoring aggregates. In this CHCl₃/DMSO mixed solvent system, small nanosheet aggregates were formed by the addition of a guest molecule (G) composed of tetraphenylethene and hexanenitrile groups. With prolonged aggregation time, the small sheet aggregates further aggregated into cross-linked nanoribbons and eventually formed large nanosheet aggregates. The data reveal that the morphology of H1-2 can be controlled by tuning the intermolecular interactions of the molecules via the formation of host-guest complexes. Moreover, the polyhydroxy cyclodextrin unit on H1-2 can be strongly adsorbed on the stationary phase in column chromatography via multiple hydrogen bonds, and the singly modified pillar[5]arenes can be successfully separated by host-guest interactions.

Scalable and switchable CO2-responsive membranes with high wettability for separation of various oil/water systems

Smart membranes with responsive wettability show promise for controllably separating oil/water mixtures, including immiscible oil-water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions. However, the membranes are challenged by unsatisfactory external stimuli, inadequate wettability responsiveness, difficulty in scalability and poor self-cleaning performance. Here, we develop a capillary force-driven confinement self-assembling strategy to construct a scalable and stable CO₂-responsive membrane for the smart separation of various oil/water systems. In this process, the CO₂-responsive copolymer can homogeneously adhere to the membrane surface by manipulating the capillary force, generating a membrane with a large area up to 3600 cm² and excellent switching wettability between high hydrophobicity/underwater superoleophilicity and superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity under CO₂/N₂ stimulation. The membrane can be applied to various oil/water systems, including immiscible mixtures, surfactant-stabilized emulsions, multiphase emulsions and pollutant-containing emulsions, demonstrating high separation efficiency (>99.9%), recyclability, and self-cleaning performance. Due to robust separation properties coupled with the excellent scalability, the membrane shows great implications for smart liquid separation.

Supramolecular framework membrane for precise sieving of small molecules, nanoparticles and proteins

Synthetic framework materials have been cherished as appealing candidates for separation membranes in daily life and industry, while the challenges still remain in precise control of aperture distribution and separation threshold, mild processing methods, and extensive application aspects. Here, we show a two-dimensional (2D) processible supramolecular framework (SF) by integrating directional organic host-guest motifs and inorganic functional polyanionic clusters. The thickness and flexibility of the obtained 2D SFs are tuned by the solvent modulation to the interlayer interactions, and the optimized SFs with limited layers but micron-sized areas are used to fabricate the sustainable membranes. The uniform nanopores allow the membrane composed of layered SF to exhibit strict size retention for substrates with the rejection value of 3.8 nm, and the separation accuracy within 5 kDa for proteins. Furthermore, the membrane performs high charge selectivity for charged organics, nanoparticles, and proteins, due to the insertion of polyanionic clusters in the framework skeletons. This work displays the extensional separation potentials of self-assembled framework membranes comprising of small-molecules and provides a platform for the preparation of multifunctional framework materials due to the conveniently ionic exchange of the counterions of the polyanionic clusters.

A 3D smart wood membrane with high flux and efficiency for separation of stabilized oil/water emulsions

Oily sewage discharged from indiscriminate industrial and frequent oil spills have become a serious global problem. There is an urgent need to separate stable oil/water emulsions by efficient and environmentally friendly methods. Membrane separation technology has the advantages of low energy consumption and low cost, thus is an effective solution to the problems of oily wastewater. However, the manufacture of multifunctional membranes with high efficiency, high flux and self-cleaning using renewable materials remains a challenge. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) smart membranes with switchable superhydrophobic-hydrophilic surfaces were prepared by grafting photo-responsive poly-spiropyran (PSP) on wood-based substrates via surface atom transfer radical polymerization. This novel membrane can efficiently separate stabilized water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions due to reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition by switching UV and visible light irradiation. Remarkably, after immobilization, the PSP grafted on the wood substrate exhibited a faster photo response effect than the free spiropyran (SP). More importantly, the prepared 3D smart membranes showed exceptional high flux (4392 L•m^-2•h^-1) and efficiency (above 99.99 %), good cycle stability (99.99 % after 12 times) and durability (available for at least 60 days) for the separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions. This work opens a new avenue for the design of functional biomass-derived membranes for efficient and sustainable oily wastewater treatment with high flux, easy scale-up, and green regeneration.

Wetting-Induced Water Promoted Flow on Tunable Liquid-Liquid Interface-Based Nanopore Membrane System

Membrane separation provides effective methods for solving the global water crisis. Contemporary membrane systems depend on interfacial interactions between liquid and solid membrane matrixes. However, it may lead to a limiting permeate flux due to the large flow resistance at hydrophobic liquid-solid interfaces. Herein, the liquid-liquid interface with improved interface energy is reversibly introduced in membrane systems to boost wetting and reduce transport resistance. A series of interfaces were systematically explored to reveal mechanisms of wetting and boosted flow performances, which are further supported by simulations. Findings of this study highlight that interfacial liquids with lower surface energies, lower viscosities, and higher solubilities can effectively improve water flow without sacrificing rejection performance, achieving by transforming a solid-liquid interface into liquid-liquid interface interaction. It provides a concept to design advanced membrane systems for water purification (e.g., desalination and oil-water separation) and energy conversion processes.

Dissecting the Chain Length Effect on Separation of Alkane-in-Water Emulsions with Superwetting Microchannels

Oil/water separation is an essential process in the petrochemical industry, environmental remediation, and water treatment. Alkanes are the major components of crude oil and are difficult to separate once they form emulsions in water. Much less attention has been focused on the feature of liquid alkanes that could, in turn, influence the separation process. The role of chain length is systematically studied herein by separating the alkane-in-water emulsions with superwetting titanium microchannels of 14-55 μm. The chain length covers the entire liquid alkane spectrum with carbon numbers ranging from 6 to 16. The separation efficiency decreases while the TOC content increases with the chain length of liquid alkanes for a given channel. This is attributed to the small Ostwald ripening rate with the long chains, which stabilize the oil droplets of small sizes that could pass through the zigzag channels. Accordingly, a high separation efficiency of >99.97% and a low TOC content of <5 ppm are achieved with superhydrophilic channels of 14 μm for alkanes with less than 12 carbons. The metallic microchannels surpass the conventional organic membranes and inorganic frameworks over the entire liquid n-alkane spectrum, paving the way for the future development of oil/water separation using porous metals.

Polyoxometalate-Containing Supramolecular Gels

Supramolecular gels are important soft materials with various applications, which are fabricated through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic or host-guest interactions. Introducing functional groups, especially inorganic components, is an efficient strategy to obtain gels with robust architecture and high performance. Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a class of negatively-charged clusters, have defined structures and multiple interaction sites, resulting in their potential as building blocks for constructing POM-containing supramolecular gels. The introduction of POMs into gels not only provides strong driving forces for the formation of gels due to the characteristics of charged cluster and oxygen-rich surface, but also brings new properties sourcing from unique electronic structures of POMs. Though many POM-containing gels have been reported, a comprehensive review is still absent. Herein, the concept of POM-containing gels is discussed, following with the design strategies and driving forces. To better understand the results in the literature, detailed examples, which are classified into several categories based on the types of organic components, are presented to illustrate the gelation process and gel structures. Moreover, applications of POM-containing gels in energy chemistry, sustainable chemistry and other aspects are also reviewed, as well as the future developments of this field. Stabilization of Antitumor Agent Busulfan through the Encapsulation within a Water-Soluble Pillar[5]arene

The complexation of antitumor agent busulfan by negatively charged carboxylatopillar[5]arenein water is reported. The encapsulation within carboxylatopillar[5]arenein reduces the hydrolytic degradation of busulfan from 90.7 % to 25.2 % after 24 days and accordingly enhances its stability by providing a hydrophobic shelter for busulfan in water. Moreover, the complexation result in 12 times improvement of water solubility for busulfan. Our result provides a supramolecular approach for stabilizing the anticancer agent busulfan.

Lanthanide Luminescence Supramolecular Switch Based on Photoreactive Ammonium Molybdate

Lanthanide supramolecular assemblies as photoswitches have attracted much attention in the fields of cellular imaging and light-emitting materials. However, the regulation of lanthanide luminescence behavior by redox of metal ions is rare. Herein, we constructed a lanthanide luminescence supramolecular switch, that is, a binary assembly constructed by mono-(6-ethylenediamine-6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin (ECD) and ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate ((NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄·4H₂O, Mo₇), and further assembled into ternary assemblies with polyoxometalate Na₉[XW₁₀O₃₆]·32H₂O (X-POM, X = Eu and Dy), which was comprehensively characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, NMR, Fourier transform infrared, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and ζ potential. Thanks to the oxygen-shielding effect of secondary supramolecular assembly, the photoreduction process of Mo₇ (VI) could occur rapidly and efficiently. Due to the high Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency of X-POM and Mo₇ (V) in supramolecular assembly, the photoreduction process is accompanied by fluorescence quenching. In addition, the oxidation process of the Mo₇ (V) could be rapidly promoted by heating, which allowed the X-POM fluorescence to recover. Interestingly, ECD-mediated ternary supramolecular assemblies not only tune the lanthanide luminescence but also strongly increase the lanthanide luminescence behavior, leading to the emission of strong narrow red light at ⁵D₀-⁷F₄, which can be successfully applied to two-dimensional code anticounterfeiting. In this study, a new approach is provided for the construction of lanthanide luminescence supramolecular switches tuned by photoreactive polyoxometalate.

Supramolecular assemblies of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates: from functional building blocks to hierarchical nanomaterials

This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the supramolecular organisation and hierarchical self-assembly of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates (hereafter referred to as hybrid POMs), and their emerging role as multi-functional building blocks in the construction of new nanomaterials. Polyoxometalates have long been studied as a fascinating outgrowth of traditional metal-oxide chemistry, where the unusual position they occupy between individual metal oxoanions and solid-state bulk oxides imbues them with a range of attractive properties (e.g. solubility, high structural modularity and tuneable properties/reactivity). Specifically, the capacity for POMs to be covalently coupled to an effectively limitless range of organic moieties has opened exciting new avenues in their rational design, while the combination of distinct organic and inorganic components facilitates the formation of complex molecular architectures and the emergence of new, unique functionalities. Here, we present a detailed discussion of the design opportunities afforded by hybrid POMs, where fine control over their size, topology and their covalent and non-covalent interactions with a range of other species and/or substrates makes them ideal building blocks in the assembly of a broad range of supramolecular hybrid nanomaterials. We review both direct self-assembly approaches (encompassing both solution and solid-state approaches) and the non-covalent interactions of hybrid POMs with a range of suitable substrates (including cavitands, carbon nanotubes and biological systems), while giving key consideration to the underlying driving forces in each case. Ultimately, this review aims to demonstrate the enormous potential that the rational assembly of hybrid POM clusters shows for the development of next-generation nanomaterials with applications in areas as diverse as catalysis, energy-storage and molecular biology, while providing our perspective on where the next major developments in the field may emerge.

Lithium Ion Repulsion-Enrichment Synergism Induced by Core-Shell Ionic Complexes to Enable High-Loading Lithium Metal Batteries

A core-shell additive with anionic Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) cluster as core and N-containing cation of ionic liquid (IL) as shell is proposed to stabilize Li-metal batteries (LMBs). The suspended POM derived complex in ether-based electrolyte is absorbed around the protuberances of anode and triggers a lithiophobic repulsion mechanism for the homogenization of Li⁺ redistribution. The gradually released POM cores with negative charge then enrich Li⁺ and co-assemble with Li. The Li⁺ repulsion-enrichment synergism can compact Li deposition and reinforce solid electrolyte interphase. This sustained-release additive enables Li∥Li symmetric cells with a long lifetime over 500 h and 300 h at high current densities of 3 and 5 mA cm^-2 respectively. The complex additive is also compatible with high-voltage Li∥LiNi_0.8 Co_0.15 Al_0.05 O₂ (NCA) cells. Even with a NCA loading as high as ca. 20 mg cm^-2 , the additive contained Li∥NCA cell can still cycle for over 100 cycles at 2.6 mA cm^-2 .

An integrated giant polyoxometalate complex for photothermally enhanced catalytic oxidation

A strategy integrating near infrared (NIR) photothermal and catalytic effects within one active center beyond ultraviolet and visible light is proposed without the combination of separated photothermal transformation components. A giant polyoxomolybdate, which has high NIR photothermal conversion efficiency, is selected as the model catalyst, while a cationic β-cyclodextrin is used to cover its negatively charged surface electrostatically. Under NIR light radiation, the designed catalyst increases catalytic activity of cyclohexene oxidation under O2 atmosphere in water. The conversion reaches about pentaploid of the reaction without NIR radiation. By excluding heating effect from the external heater at the same temperature, about twice as much enhancement, which can be attributed to the sole photothermal action, is still observed. While the catalytic center is shielded by the organic porous layer, the surface cavity allows the integrated catalyst to conduct a selective catalysis by screening the molecules in size over the surface channel.

Exploiting Supramolecular Dynamics in Metal-Phenolic Networks to Generate Metal-Oxide and Metal-Carbon Networks

Supramolecular complexation is a powerful strategy for engineering materials in bulk and at interfaces. Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), which are assembled through supramolecular complexes, have emerged as suitable candidates for surface and particle engineering owing to their diverse properties. Herein, we examine the supramolecular dynamics of MPNs during thermal transformation processes. Changes in the local supramolecular network including enlarged pores, ordered aromatic packing, and metal relocation arise from thermal treatment in air or an inert atmosphere, enabling the engineering of metal-oxide networks (MONs) and metal-carbon networks, respectively. Furthermore, by integrating photo-responsive motifs (i.e., TiO₂ ) and silanization, the MONs are endowed with reversible superhydrophobic (>150°) and superhydrophilic (≈0°) properties. By highlighting the thermodynamics of MPNs and their transformation into diverse materials, this work offers a versatile pathway for advanced materials engineering.

Stimuli-Responsive Supramolecular Chirality Switching and Nanoassembly Constructed by n-Shaped Amphiphilic Molecules in Aqueous Solution

Self-assembled nanomaterials composed of amphiphilic oligomers with functional groups have been applied in the fields of biomimetic chemistry and on-demand delivery systems. Herein, we report the assembly behavior and unique properties of an emergent n-shaped rod-coil molecule containing an azobenzene (AZO) group upon application of an external stimulus (thermal, UV light). The n-shaped amphiphilic molecules comprising an aromatic segment based on anthracene, phenyl linked with azobenzene groups, and hydrophilic oligoether (chiral) segments self-assemble into large strip-like sheets and perforated-nanocage fragments in an aqueous environment, depending on the flexible oligoether chains. Interestingly, the nano-objects formed in aqueous solution undergo a morphological transition from sheets and nanocages to small one-dimensional nanofibers. These molecules exhibit reversible photo- and thermal-responsiveness, accompanied by a change in the supramolecular chirality caused by the conformational transitions of the rod backbone. The architecture of n-shaped amphiphilic molecules with a photosensitive group makes them ideal candidates for intelligent materials for applications in advanced materials science.

Universal and tunable liquid-liquid separation by nanoparticle-embedded gating membranes based on a self-defined interfacial parameter

Superwetting porous membranes with tunable liquid repellency are highly desirable in broad domains including scientific research, chemical industry, and environmental protection. Such membranes should allow for controllable droplet bouncing or spreading, which is difficult to achieve for low surface energy organic liquids (OLs). Here we develop an interfacial physical parameter to regulate the OL wettability of nanoparticle-embedded membranes by structuring synergistic layers with reconfigurable surface energy components. Under the tunable solid-liquid interaction in the aggregation-induced process, the membranes demonstrate positive/negative liquid gating regularity for polar protic liquids, polar aprotic liquids, and nonpolar liquids. Such a membrane can be employed as self-adaptive gating for various immiscible liquid mixtures with superior separation efficiency and permeation flux, even afford successive achievement of high-performance in situ extraction-back extraction coupling. This study should provide distinctive insights into intrinsic wetting behaviors and have pioneered a rational strategy to design high-performance separation materials for diverse applications.

Inorganic–organic hybrid supramolecular architectures based on Keggin polyoxometalates and crown ether: synthesis, crystal structure and electrochemical properties

A supramolecular complex based on a Gd-containing polyoxometalate and food-borne peptide for MRI/CT imaging and NIR-triggered photothermal therapy

A multifunctional supramolecular complex is reported for the integrated multiple magnetic resonance imaging/computed X-ray tomography (MRI/CT) imaging and photothermal therapy, wherein a gadolinium-substituted paramagnetic polyoxometalate cluster and food-borne antioxidant peptides identified from the trepang protein hydrolysates are introduced. The as-prepared complex maintained an uniform particle size and much better biocompatibility, and is an ideal candidate for the in vivo applications. The complex allows for T1-weighted MR imaging and a high Hounsfield unit value for enhanced CT imaging. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the complex possesses outstanding photothermal cancer-killing effects due to its high photothermal conversion efficiency under the exposure of an NIR laser and enhanced antibacterial activity to avoid bacterial infection from the thermal therapeutic process. These results indicate that the supramolecular complex platform exhibit potential for accurate medical diagnosis at an early stage and effective eradication of the tumor cells.

Emergent Self-Assembly of a Multicomponent Capsule via Iodine Capture

Described here is a three-component self-assembly system that displays emergent behavior that differs from that of its constituents. The system comprises an all-hydrocarbon octaaryl macrocycle cyclo[8](1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene (D_4d-CDMB-8), corannulene (Cora), and I₂. No appreciable interaction is seen between any pair of these three-components, either in cyclohexane or under various crystallization conditions. On the other hand, when all three-components are mixed in cyclohexane and allowed to undergo crystallization, a supramolecular iodine-containing capsule, ((D_4d-CDMB-8)₃⊃(Cora)₂)⊃I₂, is obtained. This all-hydrocarbon capsule consists of three D_4d-CDMB-8 and two Cora subunits and contains a centrally bound I₂ molecule as inferred from single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction studies as well as solid-state ¹³C NMR and Raman spectroscopy. These analyses were complemented by solution-phase ¹H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic studies. No evidence of I₂ escape from the capsule is seen, even at high temperatures (e.g., up to 418 K). The bound I₂ is likewise protected from reaction with alkali or standard reductants in aqueous solution (e.g., saturated NaOH(aq) or aqueous Na₂S₂O₃). It was also found that a mixed powder containing D_4d-CDMB-8 and Cora in a 3:2 molar ratio could capture saturated I₂ vapor or iodine from aqueous sources (e.g., 1.0 mM I₂ in NaCl (35 wt %) or I₂ + NaI(aq) (1.0 mM each)). The present system displays structural and functional features that go beyond what would be expected on the basis of a simple sum-of-the-components analysis. As such, it illustrates a new approach to creating self-assembled ensembles with emergent features.

Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Ionic Frameworks for Precise Membrane Separation of Small Nanoparticles

Supramolecular frameworks driven by intermolecular interactions represent a new type of porous materials differing from those driven by covalent or coordination bonding. The intermolecular interaction-induced flexible assembly structures display unique advantages in material processing, structure stimuli response, and recycling. In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular ionic framework (SIF) was constructed through the initial ionic interaction between the host cation and polyoxometalate polyanion and then the host-guest inclusion of the formed host ionic complex with a four-arm porphyrin guest molecule following a [2+4] type reaction. Several prepared framework monolayers bearing an orthometric grid structure constituted a nanosheet-like assembly with flexibility and exhibited processability, which provided feasibility for the further preparation of separation membranes via a simple suction procedure of their dispersed suspensions in mixed solvents. The nanofiltration based on the uniform square pores under a slightly reduced pressure successfully achieved precise separation of several types of nanoparticles and molecular clusters in wide distribution at a cutting off value as small as 2.2 nm. These results also implied the potential of the present strategy for more separations at a molecular level and very fine nanoscale.

Recent advances of polyoxometalates in multi-functional imaging and photothermal therapy

The recent advances of polyoxometalate clusters in terms of near infrared photothermal properties for targeted tumor therapy have been summarized while the combined applications with various bio-imaging techniques and chemotherapies are reviewed.
