Macroscopic Polarization Change via Electron Transfer in a Valence Tautomeric Cobalt Complex

Four-step electron transfer coupled spin transition in a cyano-bridged [Fe2Co2] square complex

The design of molecular functional materials with multi-step magnetic transitions has attracted considerable attention. However, the development of such materials is still infrequent and challenging. Here, a cyano-bridged square Prussian blue complex that exhibits a thermally induced four-step electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) is reported. The magnetic and spectroscopic analyses confirm this multi-step transition. Variable-temperature infrared spectrum suggested the electronic structures in each phase and a four-step transition model is proposed.

High-performance Pyroelectric Property Accompanied by Spin Crossover in a Single Crystal of Fe(II) Complex

Pyroelectric materials hold significant potential for energy harvesting, sensing, and imaging applications. However, achieving high-performance pyroelectricity across a wide temperature range near room temperature remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a single crystal of Fe(II) spin-crossover compound shows remarkable pyroelectric properties accompanied by a thermally controlled spin transition. In this material, the uniaxial alignment of polar molecules results in a polarization of the lattice. As the molecular geometry is modulated during a gradual spin transition, the polar axis experiences a colossal thermal expansion with a coefficient of 796×10-6 K-1. Consequently, the material's polarization undergoes significant modulation as a secondary pyroelectric effect. The considerable shift in polarization (pyroelectric coefficient, p=3.7-22 nC K-1cm-2), coupled with a low dielectric constant (ϵ'=4.4-5.4) over a remarkably wide temperature range of 298 to 400 K, suggests this material is a high-performance pyroelectric. The demonstration of pyroelectricity combined with magnetic switching in this study will inspire further investigations in the field of molecular electronics and magnetism.

Polar Crystals Using Molecular Chirality: Pseudosymmetric Crystallization toward Polarization Switching Materials

Polar compounds with switchable polarization properties are applicable in various devices such as ferroelectric memory and pyroelectric sensors. However, a strategy to prepare polar compounds has not been established. We report a rational synthesis of a polar CoGa crystal using chiral cth ligands (SS-cth and RR-cth, cth = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Both the original homo metal Co crystal and Ga crystal exhibit a centrosymmetric isostructure, where the dipole moment of metal complexes with the SS-cth ligand and those with the RR-cth ligand are canceled out. To obtain a polar compound, the Co valence tautomeric complex with SS-cth in the homo metal Co crystal is replaced with the Ga complex with SS-cth by mixing Co valence tautomeric complexes with RR-cth and Ga complexes with SS-cth. The CoGa crystal exhibits polarization switching between the pseudononpolar state at a low temperature and the polar state at a high temperature because only Co complexes exhibit changes in electric dipole moment due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Following the same strategy, the polarization-switchable CoZn complex was synthesized. The CoZn crystal exhibits polarization switching between the polar state at a low temperature and the pseudononpolar state at a high temperature, which is the opposite temperature dependence to that of the CoGa crystal. These results revealed that the polar crystal can be synthesized by design, using a chiral ligand. Moreover, our method allows for the control of temperature-dependent polarization changes, which contrasts with typical ferroelectric compounds, in which the polar ferroelectric phase typically occurs at low temperatures.

Photo-induced valence tautomerism and polarization switching in mononuclear cobalt complexes with an enantiopure chiral ligand

Light-induced polarization switchable molecular materials have attracted attention for decades owing to their potential remote manipulation and ultrafast responsiveness. Here we report a valence tautomeric (VT) complex with an enantiopure chiral ligand. By a suitable choice of counter anions, a significant improvement in photoconversion has been demonstrated, leading to novel photo-responsive polarization switching materials.

Electrically Detectable Photoinduced Polarization Switching in a Molecular Prussian Blue Analogue

Light, a nondestructive and remotely controllable external stimulus, effectively triggers a variety of electron-transfer phenomena in metal complexes. One prime example includes using light in molecular cyanide-bridged [FeCo] bimetallic Prussian blue analogues, where it switches the system between the electron-transferred metastable state and the system's ground state. If this process is coupled to a ferroelectric-type phase transition, the generation and disappearance of macroscopic polarization, entirely under light control, become possible. In this research, we successfully executed a nonpolar-to-polar phase transition in a trinuclear cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co] complex crystal via directional electron transfer. Intriguingly, by exposing the crystal to the wavelength of light─785 nm─without any electric field─we can drive this ferroelectric phase transition to completely depolarize the crystal, during which a measurable electric current response can be detected. These discoveries signify an important step toward the realization of fully light-controlled ferroelectric memory devices.

Ligand Modifications Produce Two-Step Magnetic Switching in a Cobalt(dioxolene) Complex

Mononuclear monodioxolene valence tautomeric (VT) cobalt complexes typically exist in their low spin (l.s.) CoIII (cat2- ) and high spin (h.s.) CoII (sq⋅- ) forms (cat2- =catecholato, and sq⋅- =seminquinonato forms of 3,5-di-t Bu-1,2-dioxolene), which reversibly interconvert via temperature-dependent intramolecular electron transfer. Typically, the remaining four coordination sites on cobalt are supported by a tetradentate ligand whose properties influence the temperature at which VT occurs. We report that replacing one chelating pyridyl arm of tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) with a weaker field ortho-anisole moiety facilitates access to a third magnetic state, and examine a series of related complexes. Variable temperature crystallographic, magnetic, calorimetric, and spectroscopic studies support that this third state is consistent with l.s. CoII (sq⋅- ). Thus, our ligand modifications not only provide access to the VT transition from l.s. CoIII (cat2- ) to l.s. CoII (sq⋅- ), but at higher temperatures, the complex undergoes spin crossover from l.s. CoII (sq⋅- ) to h.s. CoII (sq⋅- ), representing the first example of two-step magnetic switching in a mononuclear monodioxolene cobalt complex. We hypothesize that ligand dynamicity may facilitate access to the rarely observed l.s. CoII (sq⋅- ) intermediate state, suggesting a new design criterion in the development of stimulus-responsive multi-state molecular switches.

Stimuli-responsive magnetic materials: impact of spin and electronic modulation

Addressing molecular bistability as a function of external stimuli, especially in spin-crossover (SCO) and metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET) systems, has seen a surge of interest in the field of molecule-based magnetic materials due to their enormous potential in various technological applications such as molecular spintronics, memory and electronic devices, switches, sensors, and many more. The fine-tuning of molecular components allow the design and synthesis of materials with tailored properties for these vast applications. In this Feature Article, we discuss a part of our research work into this broad topic, pertaining to the recent discoveries in the field of switchable molecular magnetic materials based on SCO and MMET systems, along with some historical background of the area and related accomplishments made in recent years.

Control of electronic polarization via charge ordering and electron transfer: electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics

Ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric compounds whose electric polarization properties can be controlled by external stimuli such as electric field, temperature, and pressure have various applications, including ferroelectric memory materials, sensors, and thermal energy-conversion devices. Numerous polarization switching compounds, particularly molecular ferroelectrics and pyroelectrics, have been developed. In these materials, the polarization switching usually proceeds via ion displacement and reorientation of polar molecules, which are responsible for the change in ionic polarization and orientational polarization, respectively. Recently, the development of electronic ferroelectrics, in which the mechanism of polarization change is charge ordering and electron transfer, has attracted great attention. In this article, representative examples of electronic ferroelectrics are summarized, including (TMTTF)2X (TMTTF = tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene, X = anion), α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene), TTF-CA (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, CA = p-chloranil), and [(n-C3H7)4N][FeIIIFeII(dto)3] (dto = 1,2-dithiooxalate = C2O2S2). Furthermore, polarization switching materials using directional electron transfer in nonferroelectrics, the so-called electronic pyroelectrics, such as [(Cr(SS-cth))(Co(RR-cth))(μ-dhbq)](PF6)3 (dhbq = deprotonated 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, cth = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane), are introduced. Future prospects are also discussed, particularly the development of new properties in polarization switching through the manipulation of electronic polarization in electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics by taking advantage of the inherent properties of electrons.

Controlling Spin Crossover in a Family of Dinuclear Fe(III) Complexes via the Bis(catecholate) Bridging Ligand

Spin crossover (SCO) complexes can reversibly switch between low spin (LS) and high spin (HS) states, affording possible applications in sensing, displays, and molecular electronics. Dinuclear SCO complexes with access to [LS-LS], [LS-HS], and [HS-HS] states may offer increased levels of functionality. The nature of the SCO interconversion in dinuclear complexes is influenced by the local electronic environment. We report the synthesis and characterization of [{FeIII(tpa)}2spiro](PF6)2 (1), [{FeIII(tpa)}2Br4spiro](PF6)2 (2), and [{FeIII(tpa)}2thea](PF6)2 (3) (tpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, spiroH4 = 3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobi(indan)-5,5',6,6'-tetraol, Br4spiroH4 = 3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobi(indan)-4,4',7,7'-tetrabromo-5,5',6,6'-tetraol, theaH4 = 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene), utilizing non-conjugated bis(catecholate) bridging ligands. In the solid state, magnetic and structural analysis shows that 1 remains in the [HS-HS] state, while 2 and 3 undergo a partial SCO interconversion upon cooling from room temperature involving the mixed [LS-HS] state. In solution, all complexes undergo SCO from [HS-HS] at room temperature, via [LS-HS] to mixtures including [LS-LS] at 77 K, with the extent of SCO increasing in the order 1 < 2 < 3. Gas phase density functional theory calculations suggest a [LS-LS] ground state for all complexes, with the [LS-HS] and [HS-HS] states successively destabilized. The relative energy separations indicate that ligand field strength increases following spiro4- < Br4spiro4- < thea4-, consistent with solid-state magnetic and EPR behavior. All three complexes show stabilization of the [LS-HS] state in relation to the midpoint energy between [LS-LS] and [HS-HS]. The relative stability of the [LS-HS] state increases with increasing ligand field strength of the bis(catecholate) bridging ligand in the order 1 < 2 < 3. The bromo substituents of Br4spiro4- increase the ligand field strength relative to spiro4-, while the stronger ligand field provided by thea4- arises from extension of the overlapping π-orbital system across the two catecholate units. This study highlights how SCO behavior in dinuclear complexes can be modulated by the bridging ligand, providing useful insights for the design of molecules that can be interconverted between more than two states.

Magnetoelectricity Enhanced by Electron Redistribution in a Spin Crossover [FeCo] Complex

Molecular-based magnetoelectric materials are among the most promising materials for next-generation magnetoelectric memory devices. However, practical application of existing molecular systems has proven difficult largely because the polarization change is far lower than the practical threshold of the ME memory devices. Herein, we successfully obtained an [FeCo] dinuclear complex that exhibits a magnetic field-induced spin crossover process, resulting in a significant polarization change of 0.45 μC cm^-2. Mössbauer spectroscopy and theoretical calculations suggest that the asymmetric structural change, coupled with electron redistribution, leads to the observed polarization change. Our approach provides a new strategy toward rationally enhancing the polarization change.

Molecular Design of a Metal-Nitrosyl Ferroelectric with Reversible Photoisomerization

The development of photo-responsive ferroelectrics whose polarization may be remotely controlled by optical means is of fundamental importance for basic research and technological applications. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new metal-nitrosyl ferroelectric crystal (DMA)(PIP)[Fe(CN)₅(NO)] (1) (DMA = dimethylammonium, PIP = piperidinium) with potential phototunable polarization via a dual-organic-cation molecular design strategy. Compared to the parent non-ferroelectric (MA)₂[Fe(CN)₅(NO)] (MA = methylammonium) material with a phase transition at 207 K, the introduction of larger dual organic cations both lowers the crystal symmetry affording robust ferroelectricity and increases the energy barrier of molecular motions, endowing 1 with a large polarization of up to 7.6 μC cm^-2 and a high Curie temperature (T_c) of 316 K. Infrared spectroscopy shows that the reversible photoisomerization of the nitrosyl ligand is accomplished by light irradiation. Specifically, the ground state with the N-bound nitrosyl ligand conformation can be reversibly switched to both the metastable state I (MSI) with isonitrosyl conformation and the metastable state II (MSII) with side-on nitrosyl conformation. Quantum chemistry calculations suggest that the photoisomerization significantly changes the dipole moment of the [Fe(CN)₅(NO)]^2- anion, thus leading to three ferroelectric states with different values of macroscopic polarization. Such optical accessibility and controllability of different ferroelectric states via photoinduced nitrosyl linkage isomerization open up a new and attractive route to optically controllable macroscopic polarization.

Energy conversion and storage via photoinduced polarization change in non-ferroelectric molecular [CoGa] crystals

To alleviate the energy and environmental crisis, in the last decades, energy harvesting by utilizing optical control has emerged as a promising solution. Here we report a polar crystal that exhibits photoenergy conversion and energy storage upon light irradiation. The polar crystal consists of dinuclear [CoGa] molecules, which are oriented in a uniform direction inside the crystal lattice. Irradiation with green light induces a directional intramolecular electron transfer from the ligand to a low-spin Co^III centre, and the resultant light-induced high-spin Co^II excited state is trapped at low temperature, realizing energy storage. Additionally, electric current release is observed during relaxation from the trapped light-induced metastable state to the ground state, because the intramolecular electron transfer in the relaxation process is accompanied with macroscopic polarization switching at the single-crystal level. It demonstrates that energy storage and conversion to electrical energy is realized in the [CoGa] crystals, which is different from typical polar pyroelectric compounds that exhibit the conversion of thermal energy into electricity.

Dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and synergy effect of semi-conductivity and valence tautomerization in a photoswitchable coordination polymer

Organic radicals are widely used as linkers or ligands to synthesize molecular magnetic materials. However, studies regarding the molecular anisotropies of radical-based magnetic materials and their multifunctionalities are rare. Herein, a photoisomerizable diarylethene ligand was used to form {[Co^III(3,5-DTSQ^·-)(3,5-DTCat^2-)]₂(6F-DAE-py₂)}·3CH₃CN·H₂O (o-1·3CH₃CN·H₂O, 6F-DAE-py₂ = 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene), a valence-tautomeric (VT) coordination polymer. We directly observed dual radicals for a single crystal using high-field/-frequency (∼13.3 T and ∼360 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy along the c-axis, which was further confirmed by angle-dependent Q-band EPR spectroscopy. Moreover, a conductive anomaly close to the VT transition temperature was observed only when probes were attached at the ab plane of the single crystal, indicative of synergy between valence tautomerism and conductivity. Structural anisotropy studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that this synergy is due to electron transfer associated with valence tautomerism. This study presents the first example of dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and charge-transfer-induced conductive anisotropy in a photoswitchable coordination polymer.

Magnetoelectric effect generated through electron transfer from organic radical to metal ion

Magnetoelectric (ME) materials induced by electron transfer are extremely rare. Electron transfer in these materials invariably occurs between the metal ions. In contrast, ME properties induced by electron transfer from an organic radical to a metal ion have never been observed. Here, we report the ME coupling effect in a mononuclear molecule-based compound [(CH₃)₃NCH₂CH₂Br][Fe(Cl₂An)₂(H₂O)₂] (1) [Cl₂An = chloranilate, (CH₃)₃NCH₂CH₂Br⁺ = (2-bromoethyl)trimethylammonium]. Investigation of the mechanism revealed that the ME coupling effect is realized through electron transfer from the Cl₂An to the Fe ion. Measurement of the magnetodielectric (MD) coefficient of 1 indicated a positive MD of up to ∼12% at 10^3.0 Hz and 370 K, which is very different from that of ME materials with conventional electron transfer for which the MD is generally negative. Thus, the current work not only presents a novel ME coupling mechanism, but also opens a new route to the synthesis of ME coupling materials.

Magnetic and Dielectric Switchings Actuated by the Rotation of the Picoline Ligand in an Iron-Based Dinuclear Phase-Transition Complex

Multifunctional materials with switchable magnetic and dielectric properties are crucial for the development of memory and sensor devices. Herein, we report a methoxy-bridged dinuclear iron-pyridyl complex [Fe₂(4-picoline)₄(NCS)₄(μ-OCH₃)₂] (1), which shows simultaneous thermal-induced magnetic and dielectric switchings. Within the phase-transition temperature range, both magnetic switching and the dielectric anomaly were detected, in which the thermal hysteresis loops were 23 and 21 K, respectively. Detailed structural analyses revealed that these simultaneous switchings were rooted in the flexible rotatable ligands, which were actuated by readjusting the π-π intermolecular interactions between the pyridine ligands in the trans positions of the metal centers. These results were comprehensively investigated both experimentally and theoretically. This study presents a new guideline to control both the magnetic and dielectric properties of molecular complexes by external stimuli.

Interplay and Competition Between Two Different Types of Redox-Active Ligands in Cobalt Complexes: How to Allocate the Electrons?

The field of molecular transition metal complexes with redox-active ligands is dominated by compounds with one or two units of the same redox-active ligand; complexes in which different redox-active ligands are bound to the same metal are uncommon. This work reports the first molecular coordination compounds in which redox-active bisguanidine or urea azine (biguanidine) ligands as well as oxolene ligands are bound to the same cobalt atom. The combination of two different redox-active ligands leads to mono- as well as unprecedented dinuclear cobalt complexes, being multiple (four or six) center redox systems with intriguing electronic structures, all exhibiting radical ligands. By changing the redox potential of the ligands through derivatisation, the electronic structure of the complexes could be altered in a rational way.

Thermally induced charge transfer in a quinoid-bridged linear Cu3 compound

Charge transfer always occurs in molecular valence tautomers, leading to the redistribution of electron density and exhibiting electrical, optical, and magnetic properties, and can be further controlled by multiple external stimuli such as temperature, light and electric field. The design of molecule-based materials capable of charge transfer remains a challenge. Herein, a linear Cu₃ compound [(CH₃)₃NCH₂CH₂Br]₂[Cu₃L₄(H₂O)₂] (H₂L = chloranilic acid) (1) with a multi-center donor-acceptor architecture was constructed using the redox-active chloranilic acid quinoid ligand. Temperature-dependent dielectric measurement was performed to capture the charge transfer valence tautomer transition because it is difficult to detect this transition by crystal structure and magnetism analysis. Temperature-dependent XPS and EPR further confirmed that the charge transfer valence tautomer transition is based on the Cu^II-L^2- to Cu^I-L^-˙ multi-center charge transfer. Thus, the present work builds a charge transfer compound with a multi-center donor-acceptor architecture and proves that dielectric measurement is a very effective means to detect charge transfer.

Ferroelectric coordination metal complexes based on structural and electron dynamics

Ferroelectrics that display electrically invertible polarisation are attractive materials because of their potential for wide-ranging applications. To date, considerable effort has thus been devoted towards developing ferroelectric materials, particularly those comprising organic/inorganic compounds. In these systems, structural dynamics such as atomic displacement and reorientation of polar ions/molecules play a key role in the generation of reversible spontaneous polarisation. Although there are many reports concerned with organic/inorganic ferroelectrics, ferroelectrics based on coordination metal complexes have been largely unexplored despite their often unique electronic and spin state properties. In this feature article, we discuss recent progress involving coordination metal complex-based ferroelectrics where the reversible polarisation originates not only from structural dynamics (represented by proton transfer, molecular motion, and liquid crystalline behaviour) but also from electron dynamics (represented by electron transfer and spin crossover phenomena) occurring at the metal centre. Furthermore, unique synergy effects (i.e. magnetoelectric coupling) resulting from the structural and electron dynamics are described. We believe that this review pertaining to ferroelectric coordination metal complexes provides new insights for fabricating further advanced functional materials such as multiferroics and spintronics.

Spin-State Modulation in FeII -Based Hofmann-Type Coordination Polymers: From Molecules to Materials

Spin crossover complexes that reversibly interconvert between two stable states imitate a binary state of 0 and 1, delivering a promising possibility to address the data processing concept in smart materials. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the modulation of magnetic transition between high spin and low spin and the factors responsible for stabilizing the spin states is an essential theme in modern materials design. In this context, the present review attempts to provide a concise outline of the design strategy employed at the molecular level for fine-tuning the spin-state switching in Fe^II -based Hofmann-type coordination polymers and their effects on the optical and magnetic response. In addition, development towards the nanoscale architectures of HCPs, i. e., in terms of nanoparticles and thin films, are emphasized to bridge the gap between the laboratory and reality.

Solvent-Induced Redox Isomerism of Cobalt Complexes with Redox-Active Bisguanidine Ligands

Redox-isomeric coordination compounds, in which the magnetic and optical properties could be varied by a stimulated intramolecular electron transfer between the metal and a redox-active ligand, are of interest for several applications in catalysis and materials science. In this work, the redox chemistry of cobalt complexes with redox-active bisguanidine ligands is studied; systematic modifications at the redox-active bisguanidine and the co-ligand units allow for fine-tuning of the electronic structure, which eventually leads to the first observation of redox isomerism for cobalt complexes with redox-active guanidine ligands. Redox isomerism is triggered by a change in the solvent properties.

Discovery of Kinetic Effect in a Valence Tautomeric Cobalt-Dioxolene Complex

Two isostructural valence tautomeric (VT) complexes with different critical temperatures were prepared and fully investigated through a series of magnetic, structural, spectral, and differential scanning calorimetry evidence. The kinetic effect in the VT complex was observed for the first time through scan-rate-dependent studies and further validated by annealing tests.

One-Step versus Two-Step Valence Tautomeric Transitions in Tetraoxolene-Bridged Dinuclear Cobalt Compounds

The syntheses of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands are the long-term goal of the field of bistable materials. The redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (pyrene^Q-Q), is now developed to synthesize a pair of dinuclear compounds {[CoL₂]₂(pyrene^Sq-Sq)}[Co(CO)₄]₂·xCH₂Cl₂·2C₆H₅CH₃ (1, x = 2, L = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2, x = 1.5, L = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements indicate a partial one-step valence tautomeric transition for 1 and a rare two-step valence tautomeric transition for 2, respectively. DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the one-step/two-step valence tautomeric behaviors.

Manipulating Selective Metal-to-Metal Electron Transfer to Achieve Multi-Phase Transitions in an Asymmetric [Fe2Co]-Assembled Mixed-Valence Chain

Manipulation of multi-functions in molecular materials is promising for future switching and memory devices, although is currently difficult. Herein, we assembled the asymmetric {Fe2Co} unit into a cyanide-bridged mixed-valence chain {[(Tp)Fe(CN)3]2Co(BIT)}·2CH3OH (1) (Tp = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate and BIT = 3,4-bis-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)thiophen), which showed reversible multi-phase transitions accompanied by the photo-switchable single-chain magnet property and dielectric anomalies. Variable temperature X-ray structural studies revealed thermo-and photo-induced selective electron transfer (ET) between the Co and one of the Fe ions. Alternating-current magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that 1 displayed on and off of the single-chain magnet behavior by alternating 946-nm and 532-nm light irradiations. A substantial anomaly in dielectric constant was discovered during the electron transfer process, which is uncommon in similar ET complexes. These findings illustrate that 1 provided a new platform for multi-phase transitions and multi-switches adjusted by selective metal-to-metal ET.

A Convenient DFT-Based Strategy for Predicting Transition Temperatures of Valence Tautomeric Molecular Switches

The ability to identify promising candidate switchable molecules computationally, prior to synthesis, represents a considerable advance in the development of switchable molecular materials. Even more useful would be the possibility of predicting the switching temperature. Cobalt-dioxolene complexes can exhibit thermally induced valence tautomeric switching between low-spin Co^III-catecholate and high-spin Co^II-semiquinonate forms, where the half-temperature (T_1/2) is the temperature at which there are equal amounts of the two tautomers. We report the first simple computational strategy for accurately predicting T_1/2 values for valence tautomeric complexes. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) methods have been applied to the [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N₂L)] (dbdiox/dbsq^•- = 3,5-di-tert-butyldioxolene/semiquinonate; N₂L = diimine) family of valence tautomeric complexes, including the newly reported [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(MeO-bpy)] (1) (MeO-bpy = 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine). The DFT strategy has been thoroughly benchmarked to experimental data, affording highly accurate spin-distributions and an excellent energy match between experimental and calculated spin-states. Detailed orbital analysis of the [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N₂L)] complexes has revealed that the diimine ligand tunes the T_1/2 value primarily through π-acceptance. We have established an excellent correlation between experimental T_1/2(toluene) values for [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N₂L)] complexes and the calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy of the corresponding diimine ligand. The model affords accurate T_1/2(toluene) values for [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N₂L)] complexes, with an average error of only 3.7%. This quantitative and simple DFT strategy allows experimentalists to not only rapidly identify proposed VT complexes but also predict the transition temperature. This study lays the groundwork for future in silico screening of candidate switchable molecules prior to experimental investigation, with associated time, cost, and environmental benefits.

Manipulating electron redistribution to achieve electronic pyroelectricity in molecular [FeCo] crystals

Pyroelectricity plays a crucial role in modern sensors and energy conversion devices. However, obtaining materials with large and nearly constant pyroelectric coefficients over a wide temperature range for practical uses remains a formidable challenge. Attempting to discover a solution to this obstacle, we combined molecular design of labile electronic structure with the crystal engineering of the molecular orientation in lattice. This combination results in electronic pyroelectricity of purely molecular origin. Here, we report a polar crystal of an [FeCo] dinuclear complex exhibiting a peculiar pyroelectric behavior (a substantial sharp pyroelectric current peak and an unusual continuous pyroelectric current at higher temperatures) which is caused by a combination of Fe spin crossover (SCO) and electron transfer between the high-spin Fe ion and redox-active ligand, namely valence tautomerism (VT). As a result, temperature dependence of the pyroelectric behavior reported here is opposite from conventional ferroelectrics and originates from a transition between three distinct electronic structures. The obtained pyroelectric coefficient is comparable to that of polyvinylidene difluoride at room temperature.

Stimulation of Redox-Induced Electron Transfer by Interligand Hydrogen Bonding in a Cobalt Complex with Redox-Active Guanidine Ligand

Octahedrally coordinated cobalt(II) complexes with a redox‐active bisguanidine ligand and acac co‐ligands were synthesized and their redox chemistry analysed in detail. The N−H functions in a bisguanidine ligand with partially alkylated guanidino groups form N−H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds with the acac co‐ligands, thereby massively influencing the redox chemistry. For all complexes, the first one‐electron oxidation is metal‐centred, leading to Co^III complexes with neutral bisguanidine ligand units. Further one‐electron oxidation is ligand‐centred in the case of Co–bisguanidine complexes with fully alkylated guanidino groups, giving Co^III complexes with radical monocationic bisguanidine ligands. On the other hand, the hydrogen‐bond strengthening upon oxidation of the Co–bisguanidine complex with partially alkylated guanidino groups initiates metal reduction (Co^III→Co^II) and two‐electron oxidation of the guanidine ligand, providing the first example for the stimulation of redox‐induced electron transfer by interligand hydrogen bonding.

Large-Amplitude Thermal Vibration-Coupled Valence Tautomeric Transition Observed in a Conductive One-Dimensional Rhodium-Dioxolene Complex

The exploration of dynamic molecular crystals is a fascinating theme for materials scientists owing to their fundamental science and potential application to molecular devices. Herein, a one-dimensional (1D) rhodium-dioxolene complex is reported that exhibits drastic changes in properties with the phase transition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the room-temperature (RT) phase is in a mixed-valence state, and therefore, the drastic changes originate from the mixed-valence state appearing in the RT phase. Another notable feature is that the mean square displacements of the rhodium atoms along the 1D chain dramatically increased in the RT phase, indicating a large-amplitude vibration of the Rh-Rh bonds. From these results, a possible mechanism for the appearance of the mixed-valence state in the RT phase was proposed based on the thermal electron transfer from the 1D d-band to the semiquinonato π* orbital coupled with the large-amplitude vibration of the Rh-Rh bonds.
