Reversible multicolor chromism in layered formamidinium metal halide perovskites

Color-Tunable Perovskite Nanomaterials with Intense Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Tailorable Compositions

The ability to design halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) offers exceptional potential in photonic technologies. Despite recent inspiring advances, the creation of PNCs with full-color tailorablity, outstanding CPL, and long-term stability remains a substantial challenge. Herein, a robust strategy to craft CPL-active PNCs is reported, exhibiting appealing full-color tunable wavelengths, enhanced CPL, and prolonged stability. In contrast to conventional methodologies, this strategy utilizes chiral nematic mesoporous silica (CNMS) as host to render in situ confined growth of diverse achiral PNCs. By strategically engineering photonic bandgap, adjusting loading amount of PNCs, and manipulating cations/anion compositions of PNCs, robust CPL responses with tunable wavelength and intensity are successfully obtained. The resulting PNCs-CNMS achieves stable CPL emissions with full-color tunability and impressive luminescent dissymmetric factors up to -0.17. Remarkably, silica-based hosts as a protective barrier confer exceptional resistance to humidity, photodegradation, and thermal stability, even up to 95 °C. Furthermore, the ability to achieve reversible CPL switching within PNCs-CNMS is attainable by leveraging the responsiveness of CNMS matrix or dynamic behavior of impregnated PNCs. Additionally, circularly polarized light-emitting diode devices based on PNCs-CNMS can be conveniently fabricated. This research affords a powerful platform for designing functional chiroptical materials.

Ordered Perovskite Structure with Functional Units for High Performance and Stable Solar Cells

Ion migration is one of the most critical challenges that affects the stability of metal-halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the current arsenal of available strategies for solving this issue is limited. Here, novel perovskite active layers following the concept of ordered structures with functional units (OSFU) to intrinsically suppress ion migration, in which a three-dimensional (3D) perovskite layer is deposited by vapor deposition for light absorption and a 2D layer is deposited by solution process for ion inhibition, are constructed. As a promising result, the activation energy of ion migration increases from 0.36 eV for the conventional perovskite to 0.54 eV for the OSFU perovskite. These devices exhibit substantially enhanced operational stability in comparison with the conventional ones, retaining >85% of their initial efficiencies after 1200 h under ISOS-L-1. Moreover, the OSFU devices show negligible fatigue behavior with a robust performance under light/dark cycling aging test (ISOS-LC-1 protocol), which demonstrates the promising application of functional motif theory in this field.

Perovskite Smart Windows: The Light Manipulator in Energy-Efficient Buildings

Uncontrolled sunlight entering through windows contributes to substantial heating and cooling demands in buildings, which leads to high energy consumption from the buildings. Recently, perovskite smart windows have emerged as innovative energy-saving technologies, offering the potential to adaptively control indoor solar heat gain through their impressive sunlight modulation capabilities. Moreover, harnessing the high-efficiency photovoltaic properties of perovskite materials, these windows have the potential to generate power, thereby realizing more advanced windows with combined light modulation and energy harvesting capabilities. This review summarizes the recent advancements in various chromic perovskite materials for achieving light modulation, focusing on both perovskite structures and underlying switching mechanisms. The discussion also encompasses device engineering strategies for smart windows, including the improvement of their optical and transition performance, durability, combination with electricity generation, and the evaluation of their energy-saving performance in building applications. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities associated with perovskite smart windows are explicated, aimed at stimulating more academic research and advancing their pragmatic implementation for building energy efficiency and sustainability.

Solvent-Templated Methylammonium-Based Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites with Short Interlayer Distances

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites are exquisite semiconductors with great structural tunability. They can incorporate a rich variety of organic species that not only template their layered structures but also add new functionalities to their optoelectronic characteristics. Here, we present a series of new methylammonium (CH3NH3+ or MA)-based 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites templated by dimethyl carbonate (CH3OCOOCH3 or DMC) solvent molecules. We report the synthesis, detailed structural analysis, and characterization of four new compounds: MA2(DMC)PbI4 (n = 1), MA3(DMC)Pb2I7 (n = 2), MA4(DMC)Pb3I10 (n = 3), and MA3(DMC)Pb2Br7 (n = 2). Notably, these compounds represent unique structures with MA as the sole organic cation both within and between the perovskite sheets, while DMC molecules occupy a tight space between the MA cations in the interlayer. They form hydrogen-bonded [MA···DMC···MA]2+ complexes that act as spacers, preventing the perovskite sheets from condensing into each other. We report one of the shortest interlayer distances (∼5.7-5.9 Å) in solvent-incorporated 2D halide perovskites. Furthermore, the synthesized crystals exhibit similar optical characteristics to other 2D perovskite systems, including narrow photoluminescence (PL) signals. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm their direct-band-gap nature. Meanwhile, the phase stability of these systems was found to correlate with the H-bond distances and their strengths, decreasing in the order MA3(DMC)Pb2I7 > MA4(DMC)Pb3I10 > MA2(DMC)PbI4 ∼ MA3(DMC)Pb2Br7. The relatively loosely bound nature of DMC molecules enables us to design a thermochromic cell that can withstand 25 cycles of switching between two colored states. This work exemplifies the unconventional role of the noncharged solvent molecule in templating the 2D perovskite structure.

Modulating the Distribution of Formamidinium Iodide by Ultrahigh Humidity Treatment Strategy for High-Quality Sequential Vapor Deposited Perovskite

The quality of two-step processed perovskites is significantly influenced by the distribution of organic amine salts. Especially, modulating the distribution of organic amine salts remains a grand challenge for sequential vapor-deposited perovskites due to the blocking effect of bottom compact PbI2. Herein, an ultrahigh humidity treatment strategy is developed to facilitate the diffusion of formamidinium iodide (FAI) from the top surface to the buried bottom interface on the sequential vapor-deposited bilayer structure. Both experimental and theoretical investigations elucidate the mechanism that moisture helps to i) create FAI diffusion channels by inducing a phase transition from α- to δ-phase in the perovskite, and ii) enhance the diffusivity of FAI by forming hydrogen bonds. This ultrahigh humidity treatment strategy enables the formation of a desired homogeneous and high-quality α-phase after annealing. As a result, a champion efficiency of 22.0% is achieved and 97.5% of its initial performance is maintained after aging for 1050 h under ambient air with a relative humidity of up to 80%. This FAI diffusion strategy provides new insights into the reproducible, scalable, and high-performance sequential vapor-deposited perovskite solar cells.

Mask-inspired moisture-transmitting and durable thermochromic perovskite smart windows

Thermochromic perovskite smart windows (TPWs) are a cutting-edge energy-efficient window technology. However, like most perovskite-based devices, humidity-related degradation limits their widespread application. Herein, inspired by the structure of medical masks, a unique triple-layer thermochromic perovskite window (MTPW) that enable sufficient water vapor transmission to trigger the thermochromism but effectively repel detrimental water and moisture to extend its lifespan is developed. The MTPW demonstrates superhydrophobicity and maintains a solar modulation ability above 20% during a 45-day aging test, with a decay rate 37 times lower than that of a pristine TPW. It can also immobilize lead ions and significantly reduce lead leakage by 66 times. Furthermore, a significant haze reduction from 90% to 30% is achieved, overcoming the blurriness problem of TPWs. Benefiting from the improved optical performance, extended lifespan, suppressed lead leakage, and facile fabrication, the MTPW pushes forward the wide applications of smart windows in green buildings.

Thermochromic Printable and Multicolor Polymeric Composite Based on Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskite

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (PVKs) are among the most promising materials for optoelectronic applications thanks to their outstanding photophysical properties and easy synthesis. Herein, a new PVK-based thermochromic composite is demonstrated. It can reversibly switch from a transparent state (transmittance > 80%) at room temperature to a colored state (transmittance < 10%) at high temperature, with very fast kinetics, taking only a few seconds to go from the bleached to the colored state (and vice versa). X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calometry, rheological, and optical measurements carried out during heating/cooling cycles reveal that thermochromism in the material is based on a reversible process of PVK disassembly/assembly mediated by intercalating polymeric chains, through the formation and breaking of hydrogen bonds between polymer and perovskite. Therefore, differently from other thermochromic perovskites, that generally work with the adsorption/desorption of volatile molecules, the system is able to perform several heating/cooling cycles regardless of environmental conditions. The color and transition temperature (from 70 to 120 °C) can be tuned depending on the type of perovskite. Moreover, this thermochromic material is printable and can be deposited by cheap techniques, paving the way for a new class of smart coatings with an unprecedented range of colors.

Optical Memory, Switching, and Neuromorphic Functionality in Metal Halide Perovskite Materials and Devices

Metal halide perovskite based materials have emerged over the past few decades as remarkable solution-processable optoelectronic materials with many intriguing properties and potential applications. These emerging materials have recently been considered for their promise in low-energy memory and information processing applications. In particular, their large optical cross-sections, high photoconductance contrast, large carrier-diffusion lengths, and mixed electronic/ionic transport mechanisms are attractive for enabling memory elements and neuromorphic devices that are written and/or read in the optical domain. Here, recent progress toward memory and neuromorphic functionality in metal halide perovskite materials and devices where photons are used as a critical degree of freedom for switching, memory, and neuromorphic functionality is reviewed.

Reversible structural transformations and color-tunable emissions in organic manganese halides

Herein, we for the first time report a reversible conversion between green-emissive [DMPZ]MnCl4 and red-emissive [DMPZ]4(MnCl6)(MnCl4)2·(H2O)2 (DMPZ = 1,4-dimethylpiperazine) using kinetic and thermodynamic controlling strategies. Significantly, the synchronous structural and emission transformations in single-component organic manganese halides with adjustable emission colors are highlighted.

Thermosalient effect of a naphthalene diimide and tetrachlorocobaltate hybrid and changes of color and magnetic properties by ammonia vapor

An organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIMH), namely the electron-deficient naphthalene diimide (NDI) and [CoCl₄]^2- hybrid (1), showed potential as a sensor for ammonia and amines, in addition to magnetic changes upon vapochromism. Crystal 1 exhibited thermosalient behavior such as leaping and movement, at around 130 °C, which could be explained to be associated with the removal of water molecules from the crystal lattice as shown by TGA and DSC. Compound 1 changed from green to black within 5 minutes when exposed to ammonia vapor, which was attributed to the radical formation in the NDI moiety as evidenced by ESR, and this phenomenon was preserved even when other mono- and di-alkylamines were applied. The exposure of 1 to ammonia resulted in a subsequent color alteration, progressing from black to a gradually dark orange after one day (1_NH3_1 day). This transformation was concomitant with the formation of [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺ from [CoCl₄]^2-, leading to a modification of the magnetic properties from paramagnetic Co(II) (S = 3/2) to diamagnetic Co(III) (S = 0). Based on these findings, compound 1 represents the first example of an OIMH that exhibits thermosalient behaviour, color change, and magnetic conversion upon exposure to ammonia.

Can we make color switchable photovoltaic windows?

The development of smart windows could enhance the functionality of the large glass facades found in modern buildings around the globe. While these facades offer occupants views and natural light, the poor insulating qualities of glass cut against the desire for more efficient use of energy resources. In this perspective article, we explore recent developments for next-generation smart window technologies that can offer improved energy management through dynamic color switching, reducing heating and cooling loads, while also generating electricity through the photovoltaic effect. Approaches with chromogenic organic dyes and halide perovskite semiconductors have been developed for switchable photovoltaic windows, but each of these comes with unique challenges. These approaches are briefly discussed and evaluated with an eye to their future prospects. We hope that this perspective will spur other researchers as they think about the various materials and chemical design challenges associated with color switchable photovoltaic windows. Perhaps these initial demonstrations and research ideas can then become marketable products that efficiently use space to improve occupant comfort and reduce the energy demand of the built environment.

Thermochromic Energy Efficient Windows: Fundamentals, Recent Advances, and Perspectives

Thermochromic energy efficient windows represent an important protocol technology for advanced architectural windows with energy-saving capabilities through the intelligent regulation of indoor solar irradiation and the modulation of window optical properties in response to real-time temperature stimuli. In this review, recent progress in some promising thermochromic systems is summarized from the aspects of structures, the micro-/mesoscale regulation of thermochromic properties, and integration with other emerging energy techniques. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities in thermochromic energy-efficient windows are outlined to promote future scientific investigations and practical applications in building energy conservation.

Synergistic passivation and stepped-dimensional perovskite analogs enable high-efficiency near-infrared light-emitting diodes

Formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI₃) perovskites are promising emitters for near-infrared light-emitting diodes. However, their performance is still limited by defect-assisted nonradiative recombination and band offset-induced carrier aggregation at the interface. Herein, we introduce a couple of cadmium salts with acetate or halide anion into the FAPbI₃ perovskite precursors to synergistically passivate the material defects and optimize the device band structure. Particularly, the perovskite analogs, containing zero-dimensional formamidinium cadmium iodide, one-dimensional δ-FAPbI₃, two-dimensional FA₂FA_n-1Pb_nI_3n+1, and three-dimensional α-FAPbI₃, can be obtained in one pot and play a pivotal and positive role in energy transfer in the formamidinium iodide-rich lead-based perovskite films. As a result, the near-infrared FAPbI₃-based devices deliver a maximum external quantum efficiency of 24.1% together with substantially improved operational stability. Combining our findings on defect passivation and energy transfer, we also achieve near-infrared light communication with device twins of light emitting and unprecedented self-driven detection.

Near-Infrared-Activated Thermochromic Perovskite Smart Windows

Perovskite-based thermochromic smart windows that can change color have attracted much interest. However, the high transition temperature (>45 °C in air) hinders their practical application. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR) activated thermochromic perovskite window that enables reversible transition cycles at room temperature is proposed. Under natural sunlight (>700 W m^-2 ), it efficiently harvests 78% NIR light to trigger the thermochromism of perovskites, blocking the heat gain from both the visible and NIR light. Meanwhile, it also exhibits a low mid-infrared emissivity of <0.3, suppressing thermal radiation to the indoor environment. A field test demonstrates that this smart window can reduce the indoor temperature by 8 °C compared to a normal glass window at noon. The near-room-temperature color change, multispectral thermal management, outstanding energy-saving ability, and climate adaptability, and solution-based process of this window make it unique and promising for real applications.

Reversible Photochromism in ⟨110⟩ Oriented Layered Halide Perovskite

Extending halide perovskites' optoelectronic properties to stimuli-responsive chromism enables switchable optoelectronics, information display, and smart window applications. Here, we demonstrate a band gap tunability (chromism) via crystal structure transformation from three-dimensional FAPbBr₃ to a ⟨110⟩ oriented FA_n+2Pb_nBr_3n+2 structure using a mono-halide/cation composition (FA/Pb) tuning. Furthermore, we illustrate reversible photochromism in halide perovskite by modulating the intermediate n phase in the FA_n+2Pb_nBr_3n+2 structure, enabling greater control of the optical band gap and luminescence of a ⟨110⟩ oriented mono-halide/cation perovskite. Proton transfer reaction-mass spectroscopy carried out to precisely quantify the decomposition product reveals that the organic solvent in the film is a key contributor to the structural transformation and, therefore, the chromism in the ⟨110⟩ structure. These intermediate n phases (2 ≤ n ≤ ∞) stabilize in metastable states in the FA_n+2Pb_nBr_3n+2 system, which is accessible via strain or optical or thermal input. The structure reversibility in the ⟨110⟩ perovskite allowed us to demonstrate a class of photochromic sensors capable of self-adaptation to lighting.

One-Center and Two-Center Self-Trapped Excitons in Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Copper Halides: Tricolor Luminescence with High Quantum Yields

The organic-inorganic hybrid copper halides exhibit intriguing and complex photophysical properties, and the underlying mechanisms are far from clear. Here, we study the photodynamics of six novel types of low-dimensional hybrid copper halides, which have a maximum quantum yield of 98.6%. They exhibit two origins of photon emission with distinct temperature dependence and quantum transition rates. The experiments in junction with first-principles calculations indicate that they stem from two kinds of self-trapped excitons (STEs): one-center a-STE (localized on Cu⁺ monomer) and two-center m-STE (localized on Cu₂²⁺ dimer). There is phase transition between a-STE and m-STE when enough thermal energy is acquired for crossing the potential barrier between them. The degree of softness of the compositional organic cations of the copper halide plays a key role in determining the self-trapping type of the STEs.

Reversible Methanolation of Metal Halide Perovskites

The low formation energies inherent in metal halide perovskites enable the structure to be easily broken and remade with little energy input. In this work, we leverage low formation energy to demonstrate 0D/3D structural transformations induced by reversible intercalation of methanol to yield dramatic control of visible light absorption. We identify a methanolated structure that features sheets of 0D isolated [PbI₆]^4- octahedra separated by MAI and methanol. Methanol and water reversibly displace each other in the 0D complex by controlling the chemical potential of the system via Le Chatelier's principle. The weaker H-bonding of methanol compared to water effectively reduces the complex dissociation temperature from 70 to 50 °C, rendering the methanol complex more desirable for an array of next-generation applications spanning low-power-consumption memory to switchable photovoltaics.

State of the Art and Prospects for Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Metal-halide perovskites have rapidly emerged as one of the most promising materials of the 21st century, with many exciting properties and great potential for a broad range of applications, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics and photocatalysis. The ease with which metal-halide perovskites can be synthesized in the form of brightly luminescent colloidal nanocrystals, as well as their tunable and intriguing optical and electronic properties, has attracted researchers from different disciplines of science and technology. In the last few years, there has been a significant progress in the shape-controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals and understanding of their properties and applications. In this comprehensive review, researchers having expertise in different fields (chemistry, physics, and device engineering) of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have joined together to provide a state of the art overview and future prospects of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystal research.

Structural Transitions and Stability of FAPbI3 and MAPbI3: The Role of Interstitial Water

We studied the influence of water on the structural stability and transformations of MAPI and FAPI by anelastic and dielectric spectroscopies under various temperature and H2O partial pressure protocols. Before discussing the new results in terms of interstitial water in MAPI and FAPI, the literature is briefly reviewed, in search of other studies and evidences on interstitial water in hybrid halide perovskites. In hydrated MAPI, the elastic anomaly between the cubic α and tetragonal β phases may be depressed by more than 50%, demonstrating that there are H2O molecules dispersed in the perovskite lattice in interstitial form, that hinder the long range tilting of the PbI6 octahedra. Instead, in FAPI, interstitial water accelerates in both senses the reconstructive transformations between 3D α and 1D δ phases, which is useful during the crystallization of the α phase. On the other hand, the interstitial H2O molecules increase the effective size of the MA and FA cations to which are bonded, shifting the thermodynamic equilibrium from the compact perovskite structure to the open δ and hydrated phases of loosely bonded chains of PbI6 octahedra. For this reason, when fabricating devices based on hybrid metal-organic halide perovskites, it is important to reduce the content of interstitial water as much as possible before encapsulation.
