Noisy image segmentation based on synchronous dynamics of coupled photonic spiking neurons

The collective dynamics in neural networks is essential for information processing and has attracted much interest on the application in artificial intelligence. Synchronization is one of the most dominant phenomenon in the collective dynamics of neural network. Here, we propose to use the spiking dynamics and collective synchronization of coupled photonic spiking neurons for noisy image segmentation. Based on the synchronization mechanism and synchronization control, the noised pattern segmentation is demonstrated numerically. This work provides insight into the possible application based on the collective dynamics of large-scale photonic networks and opens a way for ultra-high speed image processing.

Detecting partial synchrony in a complex oscillatory network using pseudovortices

Partial synchronization is an important dynamical process of coupled oscillators on various natural and artificial networks, which can remain undetected due to the system complexity. With an analogy between pairwise asynchrony of oscillators and topological defects, i.e., vortices, in the two-dimensional XY model, we propose a robust and data-driven method to identify the partial synchronization on complex networks. The proposed method is based on an integer matrix whose element is pseudovorticity that discretely quantifies asynchronous phase dynamics in every two oscillators, which results in graphical and entropic representations of partial synchrony. As a first trial, we apply our method to 200 FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons on a complex small-world network. Partially synchronized chimera states are revealed by discriminating synchronized states even with phase lags. Such phase lags also appear in partial synchronization in chimera states. Our topological, graphical, and entropic method is implemented solely with measurable phase dynamics data, which will lead to a straightforward application to general oscillatory networks including neural networks in the brain.

Speed-up coherent Ising machine with a spiking neural network

Coherent Ising machine (CIM) is a hardware solver that simulates the Ising model and finds optimal solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. However, for practical tasks, the computational process may be trapped in local minima, which is a key challenge for CIM. In this work, we design a CIM structure with a spiking neural network by adding dissipative pulses, which are anti-symmetrically coupled to the degenerate optical parametric oscillator pulses in CIM with a measurement feedback system. We find that the unstable oscillatory region of the spiking neural network could assist the CIM to escape from the trapped local minima. Moreover, we show that the machine has a different search mechanism than CIM, which can achieve a higher solution success probability and speed-up effect.

Multidimensional hyperspin machine

From condensed matter to quantum chromodynamics, multidimensional spins are a fundamental paradigm, with a pivotal role in combinatorial optimization and machine learning. Machines formed by coupled parametric oscillators can simulate spin models, but only for Ising or low-dimensional spins. Currently, machines implementing arbitrary dimensions remain a challenge. Here, we introduce and validate a hyperspin machine to simulate multidimensional continuous spin models. We realize high-dimensional spins by pumping groups of parametric oscillators, and show that the hyperspin machine finds to a very good approximation the ground state of complex graphs. The hyperspin machine can interpolate between different dimensions by tuning the coupling topology, a strategy that we call "dimensional annealing". When interpolating between the XY and the Ising model, the dimensional annealing substantially increases the success probability compared to conventional Ising simulators. Hyperspin machines are a new computational model for combinatorial optimization. They can be realized by off-the-shelf hardware for ultrafast, large-scale applications in classical and quantum computing, condensed-matter physics, and fundamental studies.

Transient Response and Firing Behaviors of Memristive Neuron Circuit

The signal transmission mechanism of the Resistor-Capacitor (RC) circuit is similar to the intracellular and extracellular signal propagating mechanism of the neuron. Thus, the RC circuit can be utilized as the circuit model of the neuron cell membrane. However, resistors are electronic components with the fixed-resistance and have no memory properties. A memristor is a promising neuro-morphological electronic device with nonvolatile, switching, and nonlinear characteristics. First of all, we consider replacing the resistor in the RC neuron circuit with a memristor, which is named the Memristor-Capacitor (MC) circuit, then the MC neuron model is constructed. We compare the charging and discharging processes between the RC and MC neuron circuits. Secondly, two models are compared under the different external stimuli. Finally, the synchronous and asynchronous activities of the RC and MC neuron circuits are performed. Extensive experimental results suggest that the charging and discharging speed of the MC neuron circuit is faster than that of the RC neuron circuit. Given sufficient time and proper external stimuli, the RC and MC neuron circuits can produce the action potentials. The synchronous and asynchronous phenomena in the two neuron circuits reproduce nonlinear dynamic behaviors of the biological neurons.
