Enhanced hydrogen generation by reverse spillover effects over bicomponent catalysts

Tailoring the Hydrogen Spillover Effect in Ni-Based Heterostructure Catalysts for Boosting the Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Improving the catalytic efficiency of platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts for the sluggish alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is crucial to the anion exchange membrane fuel cell. Recently, numerous Ni-based heterostructures have been designed based on bifunctional theory to enhance HOR activity by optimizing the binding energy of both H* and OH*; however, their activities are still far inferior to those of PGM catalysts. Indeed, the long transfer pathway for intermediates between different active sites in such heterostructures has rarely been investigated, which could be the reason for the bottleneck. Here, we design a Ni/MoOxHy heterostructure catalyst to promote H* migration from the Ni side to the interface for alkaline HOR via the hydrogen spillover effect. In situ X-ray absorption fine structure, Raman characterizations, H/D kinetic isotope effects, and theoretical calculations have proven facile H* migration from the Ni side to the interface, which further reacts with OH* on the MoOxHy surface. Besides, the hydrogen spillover effect is also beneficial for the preservation of the metallic phase of Ni during the reaction. The catalyst exhibits a high activity with Jk,m of 58.5 mA mgNi-1 and j0,s of 42 μA cmNi-2, which is among the best PGM-free catalysts and is even comparable to some PGM catalysts. It also shows the highest power density (511 mW cm-2) as a PGM-free anode when assembled into fuel cells under moderate back pressure. These findings prove that in addition to optimizing electrophilicity and oxophilicity for active sites, we could also improve the HOR activity from the transfer pathway for intermediates, which provides insight into the design of other efficient HOR catalysts.

Efficient Hydrogen Generation from Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis on a Tandem Ruthenium-Platinum-Titanium Catalyst

Hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB) involves multiple undefined steps and complex adsorption and activation, so single or dual sites are not enough to rapidly achieve the multi-step catalytic processes. Designing multi-site catalysts is necessary to enhance the catalytic performance of AB hydrolysis reactions but revealing the matching reaction mechanisms of AB hydrolysis is a great challenge. In this work, we propose to construct RuPt-Ti multi-site catalysts to clarify the multi-site tandem activation mechanism of AB hydrolysis. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the multi-site tandem mode can respectively promote the activation of NH3BH3 and H2O molecules on the Ru and Pt sites as well as facilitate the fast transfer of *H and the desorption of H2 on Ti sites at the same time. RuPt-Ti multi-site catalysts exhibit the highest turnover frequency (TOF) of 1293 min-1 for AB hydrolysis reaction, outperforming the single-site Ru, dual-site RuPt and Ru-Ti catalysts. This study proposes a multi-site tandem concept for accelerating the dehydrogenation of hydrogen storage material, aiming to contribute to the development of cleaner, low-carbon, and high-performance hydrogen production systems.

Al2O3-Stabilized Pt Nanozymes: Peroxidase Mimetics and Application in Glucose Detection

As promising alternatives for natural enzymes, much attention has been paid to nanozymes. And our recent study showed that the medium acid sites on the support are the active sites for the adsorption and oxidation of the substrate. Thus, in this work, due to the abundance of medium acid sites, Al2O3 was chosen as the support to prepare Pt/Al2O3 nanozymes. Through the Pt/Al2O3 samples, we further proved that the distribution of the Pt clusters and the amount of the medium acid sites can significantly influence the peroxidase-like activity. Then the Pt/Al2O3 sample was used for the detection of glucose. And as low as 0.96 μM glucose could be detected with a linear range from 5-60 μM via our method. This work showed the great potential applications of the easily prepared Pt/Al2O3 samples in varieties of simple, robust, and easy-to-make analytical approaches in the future.

Co and Co3O4 in the Hydrolysis of Boron-Containing Hydrides: H2O Activation on the Metal and Oxide Active Centers

This work focuses on the comparison of H2 evolution in the hydrolysis of boron-containing hydrides (NaBH4, NH3BH3, and (CH2NH2BH3)2) over the Co metal catalyst and the Co3O4-based catalysts. The Co3O4 catalysts were activated in the reaction medium, and a small amount of CuO was added to activate Co3O4 under the action of weaker reducers (NH3BH3, (CH2NH2BH3)2). The high activity of Co3O4 has been previously associated with its reduced states (nanosized CoBn). The performed DFT modeling shows that activating water on the metal-like surface requires overcoming a higher energy barrier compared to hydride activation. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on understanding the impact of the remaining cobalt oxide phase. The XRD, TPR H2, TEM, Raman, and ATR FTIR confirm the formation of oxygen vacancies in the Co3O4 structure in the reaction medium, which increases the amount of adsorbed water. The kinetic isotopic effect measurements in D2O, as well as DFT modeling, reveal differences in water activation between Co and Co3O4-based catalysts. It can be assumed that the oxide phase serves not only as a precursor and support for the reduced nanosized cobalt active component but also as a key catalyst component that improves water activation.

Diluting the Resistance of Built-in Electric Fields in Oxygen Vacancy-enriched Ru/NiMoO4-x for Enhanced Hydrogen Spillover in Alkaline Seawater Splitting

Recently, hydrogen spillover based binary (HSBB) catalysts have received widespread attention due to the sufficiently utilized reaction sites. However, the specific regulation mechanism of spillover intensity is still unclear. Herein, we have fabricated oxygen vacancies enriched Ru/NiMoO4-x to investigate the internal relationship between electron supply and mechanism of hydrogen spillover enhancement. The DFT calculations cooperate with in situ Raman spectrum to uncover that the H* spillover from NiMoO4-x to Ru. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies weakened the electron supply from Ru to NiMoO4-x , which contributes to dilute the resistance of built-in electric field (BEF) for hydrogen spillover. In addition, the higher ion concentration in electrolyte will promote the H* adsorption step obviously, which is demonstrated by in situ EIS tests. As a result, the Ru/NiMoO4-x exhibits a low overpotential of 206 mV at 3.0 A cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 28.8 mV dec-1 , and an excellent durability of 550 h at the current density of 0.5 A cm-2 for HER in 1.0 M KOH seawater.

Synergistic Effects in Bimetallic (Co, Mn)-Doped SnO2 Nanobelts for Greatly Enhanced Gas-Sensing Properties

Enhanced physical and chemical properties of materials through bimetallic synergistic effects remain a challenging problem because it is difficult to construct well-defined bimetallic synergies. Here, a series of bimetallic (Co, Mn)-codoped SnO2 nanobelts were synthesized through the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method by precisely controlling Co and Mn contents. The results show that the interaction between Co and Mn sites not only affects the chemical coordination environment of SnO2 nanobelts and promotes the activity of an electronic catalytic reduction reaction but also greatly improves the gas-sensing properties. At the working temperature of 300 °C, the response value of the gas sensor to 200 ppm ethanol reaches an amazing 311.9. The amount of oxygen adsorbed on the surface of the sensitive material plays a crucial role in the gas-sensing response of the material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis (XPS) spectra of the O 1s region of the sensor show that the adsorption oxygen content is 37.96%, which is higher than that of pure SnO2 (27.41%). The increase of adsorbed oxygen content can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Co and Mn bimetal, which leads to electron enrichment on the surface of SnO2 and promotes the activation of SnO2, and helps to improve the gas-sensitive characteristics of SnO2.

Modulating Electronic Metal-Support Interactions to Boost Visible-Light-Driven Hydrolysis of Ammonia Borane: Nickel-Platinum Nanoparticles Supported on Phosphorus-Doped Titania

Ammonia borane (AB) is a promising material for chemical H2 storage owing to its high H2 density (up to 19.6 wt %). However, the development of an efficient catalyst for driving H2 evolution through AB hydrolysis remains challenging. Therefore, a visible-light-driven strategy for generating H2 through AB hydrolysis was implemented in this study using Ni-Pt nanoparticles supported on phosphorus-doped TiO2 (Ni-Pt/P-TiO2 ) as photocatalysts. Through surface engineering, P-TiO2 was prepared by phytic-acid-assisted phosphorization and then employed as an ideal support for immobilizing Ni-Pt nanoparticles via a facile co-reduction strategy. Under visible-light irradiation at 283 K, Ni40 Pt60 /P-TiO2 exhibited improved recyclability and a high turnover frequency of 967.8 molH 2 ${{_{{\rm H}{_{2}}}}}$  molPt -1  min-1 . Characterization experiments and density functional theory calculations indicated that the enhanced performance of Ni40 Pt60 /P-TiO2 originated from a combination of the Ni-Pt alloying effect, the Mott-Schottky junction at the metal-semiconductor interface, and strong metal-support interactions. These findings not only underscore the benefits of utilizing multipronged effects to construct highly active AB-hydrolyzing catalysts, but also pave a path toward designing high-performance catalysts by surface engineering to modulate the electronic metal-support interactions for other visible-light-induced reactions.

Construction of Highly Active and Selective Molecular Imprinting Catalyst for Hydrogenation

Surface molecular imprinting (MI) is one of the most efficient techniques to improve selectivity in a catalytic reaction. Heretofore, a prerequisite to fabricating selective catalysts by MI strategies is to sacrifice the number of surface-active sites, leading to a remarkable decrease of activity. Thus, it is highly desirable to design molecular imprinting catalysts (MICs) in which both the catalytic activity and selectivity are significantly enhanced. Herein, a series of MICs are prepared by sequentially adsorbing imprinting molecules (nitro compounds, N) and imprinting ligand (1,10-phenanthroline, L) over the copper surface of Cu/Al2O3. The resulting Cu/Al2O3-N-L MICs not only offer promoted catalytic selectivity but also enhance catalytic activity for nitro compounds hydrogenation by an creating imprinting cavity derived from the presorption of N and forming new active Cu-N sites at the interface of the copper sites and L. Characterizations by means of various experimental investigations and DFT calculations disclose that the molecular imprinting effect (promoted activity and selectivity) originates from the formation of new active Cu-N sites and precise imprinting cavities, endowing promoted catalytic selectivity and activity on the hydrogenation of nitro compounds.

Water-assisted hydrogen spillover in Pt nanoparticle-based metal-organic framework composites

Hydrogen spillover is the migration of activated hydrogen atoms from a metal particle onto the surface of catalyst support, which has made significant progress in heterogeneous catalysis. The phenomenon has been well researched on oxide supports, yet its occurrence, detection method and mechanism on non-oxide supports such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remain controversial. Herein, we develop a facile strategy for efficiency enhancement of hydrogen spillover on various MOFs with the aid of water molecules. By encapsulating platinum (Pt) nanoparticles in MOF-801 for activating hydrogen and hydrogenation of C=C in the MOF ligand as activated hydrogen detector, a research platform is built with Pt@MOF-801 to measure the hydrogenation region for quantifying the efficiency and spatial extent of hydrogen spillover. A water-assisted hydrogen spillover path is found with lower migration energy barrier than the traditional spillover path via ligand. The synergy of the two paths explains a significant boost of hydrogen spillover in MOF-801 from imperceptible existence to spanning at least 100-nm-diameter region. Moreover, such strategy shows universality in different MOF and covalent organic framework materials for efficiency promotion of hydrogen spillover and improvement of catalytic activity and antitoxicity, opening up new horizons for catalyst design in porous crystalline materials.

Enlarging the Ni-O Bond Polarizability in a Phosphorene-Hosted Metal-Organic Framework for Boosted Water Oxidation Electrocatalysis

The emerging lattice-oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) presents attractive opportunities for breaking the scaling relationship to boost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the direct OLattice-*O interaction. However, currently the LOM-triggering rationales are still debated, and a streamlined physicochemical paradigm is extremely desirable for the design of LOM-defined OER catalysts. Herein, a Ni metal-organic framework/black phosphorene (NiMOF/BP) heterostructure is theoretically profiled and constructed as a catalytic platform for the LOM-derived OER studies. It is found that the p-type BP host can enlarge the Ni-O bond polarizability of NiMOF through the Ni-O bond stretching and Ni valence declining synergically. Such an enlarged bond polarizability will in principle alleviate the lattice oxygen confinement to benefit the LOM pathway and OER performance. As a result, the optimized NiMOF/BP catalyst exhibits promising OER performance with a low overpotential of 260 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and long-term stability in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Both experiment and calculation results suggest the activated LOM pathway with a more balanced step barrier in the NiMOF/BP OER catalyst. This research puts forward Ni-O bond polarizability as the criterion to design LOM-scaled electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

Disentangling Local Interfacial Confinement and Remote Spillover Effects in Oxide-Oxide Interactions

Supported oxides are widely used in many important catalytic reactions, in which the interaction between the oxide catalyst and oxide support is critical but still remains elusive. Here, we construct a chemically bonded oxide-oxide interface by chemical deposition of Co3O4 onto ZnO powder (Co3O4/ZnO), in which complete reduction of Co3O4 to Co0 has been strongly impeded. It was revealed that the local interfacial confinement effect between Co oxide and the ZnO support helps to maintain a metastable CoOx state in CO2 hydrogenation reaction, producing 93% CO. In contrast, a physically contacted oxide-oxide interface was formed by mechanically mixing Co3O4 and ZnO powders (Co3O4-ZnO), in which reduction of Co3O4 to Co0 was significantly promoted, demonstrating a quick increase of CO2 conversion to 45% and a high selectivity toward CH4 (92%) in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction. This interface effect is ascribed to unusual remote spillover of dissociated hydrogen species from ZnO nanoparticles to the neighboring Co oxide nanoparticles. This work clearly illustrates the equally important but opposite local and remote effects at the oxide-oxide interfaces. The distinct oxide-oxide interactions contribute to many diverse interface phenomena in oxide-oxide catalytic systems.

Recent Advances and Perspectives on Supported Catalysts for Heterogeneous Hydrogen Production from Ammonia Borane

Ammonia borane (AB), a liquid hydrogen storage material, has attracted increasing attention for hydrogen utilization because of its high hydrogen content. However, the slow kinetics of AB hydrolysis and the indefinite catalytic mechanism remain significant problems for its large-scale practical application. Thus, the development of efficient AB hydrolysis catalysts and the determination of their catalytic mechanisms are significant and urgent. A summary of the preparation process and structural characteristics of various supported catalysts is presented in this paper, including graphite, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal oxides, carbon nitride (CN), molybdenum carbide (MoC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), boron nitride (h-BN), zeolites, carbon dots (CDs), and metal carbide and nitride (MXene). In addition, the relationship between the electronic structure and catalytic performance is discussed to ascertain the actual active sites in the catalytic process. The mechanism of AB hydrolysis catalysis is systematically discussed, and possible catalytic paths are summarized to provide theoretical considerations for the designing of efficient AB hydrolysis catalysts. Furthermore, three methods for stimulating AB from dehydrogenation by-products and the design of possible hydrogen product-regeneration systems are summarized. Finally, the remaining challenges and future research directions for the effective development of AB catalysts are discussed.

Cobalt-Promoted Noble-Metal Catalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Generation from Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Ammonia borane (AB) has been regarded as a promising material for chemical hydrogen storage. However, the development of efficient, cost-effective, and stable catalysts for H₂ generation from AB hydrolysis remains a bottleneck for realizing its practical application. Herein, a step-by-step reduction strategy has been developed to synthesize a series of bimetallic species with small sizes and high dispersions onto various metal oxide supports. Superior to other non-noble metal species, the introduction of Co species can remarkably and universally promote the catalytic activity of various noble metals (e.g., Pt, Rh, Ru, and Pd) in AB hydrolysis reactions. The optimized Pt_0.1%Co_3%/TiO₂ catalyst exhibits a superhigh H₂ generation rate from AB hydrolysis, showing a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 2250 mol_H2 mol_Pt^-1 min^-1 at 298 K. Such a TOF value is about 10 and 15 times higher than that of the monometal Pt/TiO₂ and commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the synergy between Pt and CoO species can remarkably promote the chemisorption and dissociation of water molecules, accelerating the H₂ evolution from AB hydrolysis. Significantly, the representative Pt_0.25%Co_3%/TiO₂ catalyst exhibits excellent stability, achieving a record-high turnover number of up to 215,236 at room temperature. The excellent catalytic performance, superior stability, and low cost of the designed catalysts create new prospects for their practical application in chemical hydrogen storage.

Supra Hydrolytic Catalysis of Ni3 Fe/rGO for Hydrogen Generation

Light metal hydrolysis for hydrogen supply is well suited for portable hydrogen fuel cells. The addition of catalysts can substantially aid Mg hydrolysis. However, there is a lack of clear catalytic mechanism to guide the design of efficient catalysts. In this work, the essential role of nanosized catalyst (Ni₃ Fe/rGO) in activating micro-sized Mg with ultra-rapid hydrolysis process is investigated for the first time. Here, an unprecedented content of 0.2 wt% Ni₃ Fe/rGO added Mg can release 812.4 mL g^-1 hydrogen in just 60 s at 30 °C. Notably, an impressive performance with a hydrogen yield of 826.4 mL g^-1 at 0 °C in only 30 s is achieved by the Mg-2 wt% Ni₃ Fe/rGO, extending the temperature range for practical applications of hydrolysis. Moreover, the four catalysts (Ni₃ Fe/rGO, Ni₃ Fe, Ni/rGO, Fe/rGO) are designed to reveal the influence of composition, particle size, and dispersion on catalytic behavior. Theoretical studies corroborate that the addition of Ni₃ Fe/rGO accelerates the electron transfer and coupling processes and further provides a lower energy barrier diffusion path for hydrogen. Thus, a mechanism concerning the catalyst as migration relay is proposed. This work offers guidelines designing high-performance catalysts especially for activating the hydrolysis of micro-sized light weight metals.

Atomic Interface-Exciting Catalysis on Cobalt Nitride-Oxide for Accelerating Hydrogen Generation

The rational design of the interface structure between nitride and oxide using the same metallic element and correlating the interfacial active center with a determined catalytic mechanism remain challenging. Herein, a Co₄ N-Co₃ O₄ interface structure is designed to determine the effect of interfacial active centers on hydrogen generation from ammonia borane. An unparalleled catalytic activity toward H₂ production with a turnover frequency up to 79 min^-1 is achieved on Co₄ N-Co₃ O₄ @C catalyst for ten recycles. Experimental analyses and theoretical simulation suggest that the atomic interface-exciting effect (AieE) is responsible for the high catalytic activity. The Co₄ N-Co₃ O₄ interface facilitates the targeted adsorption and activation of NH₃ BH₃ and H₂ O molecules to generate H^* and H₂ . The two active centers of Co_(N)^* and Co_(O)^* at the Co₄ N-Co₃ O₄ interface activate NH₃ BH₃ and H₂ O, respectively. This proof-of-concept research on AieE provides important insights regarding the design of heterogeneous catalysts and promotes the development of the nature and regulation of energy chemical conversion.

Hydrogen reverse spillover eliminating methanation over efficient Pt–Ni catalysts for the water–gas shift reaction

Hydrogen reverse spillover from Ni0 sites to Pt sites completely eliminated the side reaction of methanation and improved the catalytic activity of Ni0 sites over a nickel phyllosilicate-supported Pt–Ni catalyst during the water–gas shift reaction.
