Boosting the electronic and catalytic properties of 2D semiconductors with supramolecular 2D hydrogen-bonded superlattices

Interlayer Delocalized Electrons Activate Basal Plane for Ultrahigh-Current-Density Hydrogen Evolution

The basal plane of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is inert for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its low-efficiency charge transfer kinetics. We propose a strategy of filling the van der Waals (vdW) layer with delocalized electrons to enable vertical penetration of electrons from the collector to the adsorption intermediate vertically. Guided by density functional theory, we achieve this concept by incorporating Cu atoms into the interlayers of tantalum disulfide (TaS2). The delocalized electrons of d-orbitals of the interlayered Cu can constitute the charge transfer pathways in the vertical direction, thus overcoming the hopping migration through vdW gaps. The vertical conductivity of TaS2 increased by 2 orders of magnitude. The TaS2 basal plane HER activity was extracted with an on-chip microcell. Modified by the delocalized electrons, the current density increased by 20 times, reaching an ultrahigh value of 800 mA cm-2 at -0.4 V without iR compensation.

Structural Design and Energy and Environmental Applications of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: A Systematic Review

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are emerging porous materials that show high structural flexibility, mild synthetic conditions, good solution processability, easy healing and regeneration, and good recyclability. Although these properties give them many potential multifunctional applications, their frameworks are unstable due to the presence of only weak and reversible hydrogen bonds. In this work, the development history and synthesis methods of HOFs are reviewed, and categorize their structural design concepts and strategies to improve their stability. More importantly, due to the significant potential of the latest HOF-related research for addressing energy and environmental issues, this work discusses the latest advances in the methods of energy storage and conversion, energy substance generation and isolation, environmental detection and isolation, degradation and transformation, and biological applications. Furthermore, a discussion of the coupling orientation of HOF in the cross-cutting fields of energy and environment is presented for the first time. Finally, current challenges, opportunities, and strategies for the development of HOFs to advance their energy and environmental applications are discussed.

Interlayer Biatomic Pair Bridging the van der Waals Gap for 100% Activation of 2D Layered Material

2D layered materials are regarded as prospective catalyst candidates due to their advantageous atomic exposure ratio. Nevertheless, the predominant population of atoms residing on the basal plane with saturated coordination, exhibit inert behavior, while a mere fraction of atoms located at the periphery display reactivity. Here, a novel approach is reported to attain complete atom activation in 2D layered materials through the construction of an interlayer biatomic pair bridge. The atoms in question have been strategically optimized to achieve a highly favorable state for the adsorption of intermediates. This optimization results from the introduction of new gap states around the Fermi level. Moreover, the presence of the interlayer bridge facilitates the electron transfer across the van der Waals gap, thereby enhancing the reaction kinetics. The hydrogen evolution reaction exhibits an impressive ultrahigh current density of 2000 mA cm-2 at 397 mV, surpassing the pristine MoS2 by approximately two orders of magnitude (26 mA cm-2 at 397 mV). This study provides new insights for enhancing the efficacy of 2D layered catalysts.

A Molecular Coordination Strategy for Regulating the Interface of MoS2 Field Effect Transistors

Chemically modifying monolayer two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with organic molecules provides a wide range of possibilities to regulate the electronic and optoelectronic performance of both materials and devices. However, it remains challenging to chemically attach organic molecules to monolayer TMDs without damaging their crystal structures. Herein, we show that the Mo atoms of monolayer MoS2 (1L-MoS2) in defect states can coordinate with both catechol and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) groups, affording a facile route to chemically modifying 1L-MoS2. Through the design of two isomeric molecules (LA2 and LA5) comprising catechol and Phen groups, we show that attaching organic molecules to Mo atoms via coordinative bonds has no negative effect on the crystal structure of 1L-MoS2. Both theoretical calculation and experiment results indicate that the coordinative strategy is beneficial for (i) repairing sulfur vacancies and passivating defects; (ii) achieving a long-term and stable n-doping effect; and (iii) facilitating the electron transfer. Field effect transistors (FETs) based on the coordinatively modified 1L-MoS2 show high electron mobilities up to 120.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 with impressive current on/off ratios over 109. Our results indicate that coordinatively attaching catechol- or Phen-bearing molecules may be a general method for the nondestructive modification of TMDs.

Recent progress in emerging two-dimensional organic-inorganic van der Waals heterojunctions

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted significant attention in recent decades due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Among them, to meet the growing demand for multifunctional applications, 2D organic-inorganic van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions have become increasingly popular in the development of optoelectronic devices. These heterojunctions demonstrate impressive capability to synergistically combine the favourable characteristics of organic and inorganic materials, thereby offering a wide range of advantages. Also, they enable the creation of innovative device structures and introduce novel functionalities in existing 2D materials, avoiding the need for lattice matching in different material systems. Presently, researchers are actively working on improving the performance of devices based on 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions by focusing on enhancing the quality of 2D materials, precise stacking methods, energy band regulation, and material selection. Therefore, this review presents a thorough examination of the emerging 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions, including their classification, fabrication, and corresponding devices. Additionally, this review offers profound and comprehensive insight into the challenges in this field to inspire future research directions. It is expected to propel researchers to harness the extraordinary capabilities of 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions for a wider range of applications by further advancing the understanding of their fundamental properties, expanding the range of available materials, and exploring novel device architectures. The ongoing research and development in this field hold potential to unlock captivating advancements and foster practical applications across diverse industries.

Graphene/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Heterostructures for O2 Activation and CO Oxidation: Metal-Free Catalysts by Design

Pristine graphene and h-BN monolayers are chemically inert to oxygen and thus exhibit very limited catalytic activity toward O2 activation. Herein, we show that graphene/h-BN heterostructures exhibit a surprising O2 activation capability. We theoretically designed ten graphene/h-BN heterostructures with three types of interfaces and investigated their catalytic activities toward O2 activation and CO-oxidation. In general, O2 can be molecularly chemisorbed and activated on electron-rich graphene/h-BN heterostructures. Electron-deficient graphene/h-BN heterostructures can lead to dissociative O2 adsorption with relatively low dissociation energy barriers (<0.4 eV). For CO-oxidation, the computed energy barrier can be as low as 0.67 eV. The high catalytic activities toward O2 stem from either electron-deficient heterostructures' accumulated electrons or electron richness and low work function for the electron-rich heterostructures. Although the catalytic activities of graphene/h-BN heterostructures depend strongly on the interface type, they are insensitive to the patterns of BN-substitutes, hence benefiting applicability of a wide range of heterostructures.

Interlayer Charge Transfer Induced Electrical Behavior Transition in 1D AgI@sSWCNT van der Waals Heterostructures

The emergence of one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (1D vdWHs) opens up potential fields with unique properties, but precise synthesis remains a challenge. The utilization of mixed conductive types of carbon nanotubes as templates has imposed restrictions on the investigation of the electrical behavior and interlayer interaction of 1D vdWHs. In this study, we efficiently encapsulated silver iodide in high-purity semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (sSWCNTs), forming 1D AgI@sSWCNT vdWHs. We characterized the semiconductor-metal transition and increased the carrier concentration of individual AgI@sSWCNTs via sensitive dielectric force microscopy and confirmed the results through electrical device tests. The electrical behavior transition was attributed to an interlayer charge transfer, as demonstrated by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Furthermore, we showed that this method of synthesizing 1D heterostructures can be extended to other metal halides. This work opens the door for the further exploration of the electrical properties of 1D vdWHs.

Interface-confined precise processing of Ag nanowire into AgPd-nanoparticle-sealed AgAu nanotroughs for boosting ethanol electrooxidation

The functions of nanomaterials are closely linked with their fine structures and compositions. Precisely processing nanoparticles into morphology- and composition-varied nanostructures can a cutting-edge technology for producing complex nanostructures. Herein, we develop an interface-confined precise processing strategy towards toluene/water-interfacial Ag nanowires. Interfacial Ag nanowires are transformed into AgPd-nanoparticle-sealed AgAu nanotroughs with abundant AgPd/AgAu hetero-junctions (i.e., AgPdAu hetero-junction nanostructures). By adjusting the reaction conditions, composition-varied AgPdAu hetero-junction nanostructures can be obtained. The formation of AgPdAu hetero-junction nanostructures can be attributed to interface-confined precise etching towards Ag nanowires separately from the two subphases of the water and the toluene. Composition-optimized Ag13Pd67Au20 hetero-junction nanostructure shows satisfactory catalytic performance towards ethanol electrooxidation: ∼4 and 2 times in electrochemical-activity-surface-area-normalized activities; ∼6 and 5 times in mass-normalized activities higher than commercial Pd/C and Pt/C, respectively. The outstanding catalytic capability of Ag13Pd67Au20 may be attributed to optimized composition, porous nanostructures as well as abundant AgPd/AgAu hetero-junctions. This work demonstrates the feasibility of precisely processing interfacial nanoparticles, opening the way for creating morphology-well-defined composition-varied complex nanostructures.

Enhancing the Carrier Transport in Monolayer MoS2 through Interlayer Coupling with 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks

The coupling of different 2D materials (2DMs) to form van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) is a powerful strategy for adjusting the electronic properties of 2D semiconductors, for applications in opto-electronics and quantum computing. 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) represents an archetypical semiconducting, monolayer thick versatile platform for the generation of hybrid vdWH with tunable charge transport characteristics through its interfacing with molecules and assemblies thereof. However, the physisorption of (macro)molecules on 2D MoS2 yields hybrids possessing a limited thermal stability, thereby jeopardizing their technological applications. Herein, the rational design and optimized synthesis of 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) for the generation of MoS2 /2D-COF vdWHs exhibiting strong interlayer coupling effects are reported. The high crystallinity of the 2D-COF films makes it possible to engineer an ultrastable periodic doping effect on MoS2 , boosting devices' field-effect mobility at room temperature. Such a performance increase can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the efficient interfacial electron transfer process and the pronounced suppression of MoS2 's lattice vibration. This proof-of-concept work validates an unprecedented approach for the efficient modulation of the electronic properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides toward high-performance (opto)electronics for CMOS digital circuits.

Advanced Strategies in Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Materials with Different Compositions and Phases

In recent years, 2D materials-M_a X_b with different compositions and phases have attracted tremendous attention due to their diverse structures and electronic features. The common thermodynamically stable 2H and metastable 1T phases have been extensively studied, however, there are many unusual compositions and phases with novel physical properties that have yet to be explored. Therefore, summarization of the synthesis strategies, atomic structures, and the unique physical properties of 2D materials with different compositions and phases is very important for their development. In this review, the strategies including chemical vapor deposition, intercalation, atomic layer deposition, chemical vapor transport, and electrostatic gating for synthesizing various 2D materials with different phases and compositions are first summarized. Specially, the intercalation strategies including heterogeneous- and self-intercalation for controllable phases and compositions fabrication are mainly discussed. Then, the novel atomic structures of 2D materials are analyzed, followed by the fascinating physical properties including ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, superconductivity, and so on. Finally, the conclusion and outlook are offered including the challenges and future prospects of 2D materials with different compositions and phases.

Influence of the Crystal Structure of Melamine Trimetaphosphate 2D Supramolecules on the Properties of Polyamide 6

To explore the influence of the crystal structure difference of melamine trimetaphosphate (MAP) on the application performance of its polymer composites, an intumescent flame retardant with the optimal crystal type was designed and synthesized to improve the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of polyamide 6 (PA6). I-MAP and II-MAP were obtained using different concentrations of MA and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) in an acidic aqueous solution. The morphology, chemical composition, and thermal stability were comprehensively characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion, mechanical properties, and flame retardancy of PA6/I-MAP and PA6/II-MAP were evaluated by SEM, stress and strain, limiting oxygen index test (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94), cone calorimetry (CONE) test, and char residue analysis. The conclusion is as follows: I-MAP and II-MAP have a greater influence on the physical properties of PA6 but less influence on the chemical properties. Compared with PA6/I-MAP, the tensile strength of PA6/II-MAP is 104.7% higher, the flame rating reaches V-0, and PHRR is reduced by 11.2%.

Adaptive 2D and Pseudo-2D Systems: Molecular, Polymeric, and Colloidal Building Blocks for Tailored Complexity

Two-dimensional and pseudo-2D systems come in various forms. Membranes separating protocells from the environment were necessary for life to occur. Later, compartmentalization allowed for the development of more complex cellular structures. Nowadays, 2D materials (e.g., graphene, molybdenum disulfide) are revolutionizing the smart materials industry. Surface engineering allows for novel functionalities, as only a limited number of bulk materials have the desired surface properties. This is realized via physical treatment (e.g., plasma treatment, rubbing), chemical modifications, thin film deposition (using both chemical and physical methods), doping and formulation of composites, or coating. However, artificial systems are usually static. Nature creates dynamic and responsive structures, which facilitates the formation of complex systems. The challenge of nanotechnology, physical chemistry, and materials science is to develop artificial adaptive systems. Dynamic 2D and pseudo-2D designs are needed for future developments of life-like materials and networked chemical systems in which the sequences of the stimuli would control the consecutive stages of the given process. This is crucial to achieving versatility, improved performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Here, we review the advancements in studies on adaptive, responsive, dynamic, and out-of-equilibrium 2D and pseudo-2D systems composed of molecules, polymers, and nano/microparticles.

Highly Specific Antibiotic Detection on Water-Stable Black Phosphorus Field-Effect Transistors

Two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) has been reported to have appealing semiconducting properties as the sensing channel in field-effect transistor (FET) sensors. However, the intrinsic instability of BP in water greatly hinders its application, and little is known about its sensing performance and mechanism in aqueous medium. Herein, a water-stable BP FET sensor for antibiotic detection is reported. A novel surface engineering strategy with Ag⁺ coordination and melamine cyanurate (MC) supramolecular passivation is utilized to enhance the stability and transistor performance of BP. With molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as the detection probe for tetracycline, the BP_Ag(+)/MC/MIPs sensor shows high sensitivity to tetracycline with a detection limit of 7.94 nM and a quick response within 6 s as well as high selectivity against other antibiotics with similar molecular structures. A new sensing mechanism relying on the conjugation effect of the probe structure is proposed, and new knowledge about alkalinity-enhanced and ionic strength-related response from the electrostatic gating effect is given based on the solution chemistry impact study. This work offers an efficient surface engineering strategy to enable the application of 2D BP for antibiotic detection in aqueous medium and presents a new sensing mechanism in chemical analysis by FET sensors.

A Highly Crystalline Single Layer 2D Polymer for Low Variability and Excellent Scalability Molecular Memristors

Large-scale growth of highly crystalline single layer 2D polymers (SL-2DPs) and their subsequent integration into memristors is key to advancing the development of high-density data storage devices. However, leakage problems resulting from the porous structure of 2DPs continue to make such advances extremely challenging. Herein, we overcome this issue by incorporating long alkoxy chains into key molecular building blocks to obtain a highly crystalline 2DP, as visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy, and prevent metal permeation in the subsequent device fabrication process. SL-2DP memristors constructed via direct evaporation of the top electrodes exhibit low variability (σ_Vset  = 0.14) due to the single-monomer-thick feature together with the high regular structure and coordination ability which minimizes the stochastic spatial distribution of conductive filaments (CFs) in both vertical and lateral dimensions. The variability is further decreased to 0.04 by confining the formation and fracture of CFs to the interface through the utilization of bilayer junctions. Using peak force tunneling atomic force microscopy, the nanometer scalability (< 50 nm² ) and low power consumption of these molecular memristor devices are demonstrated.

Heterostructure Engineering of 2D Superlattice Materials for Electrocatalysis

Exploring low-cost and high-efficient electrocatalyst is an exigent task in developing novel sustainable energy conversion systems, such as fuel cells and electrocatalytic fuel generations. 2D materials, specifically 2D superlattice materials focused here, featured highly accessible active areas, high density of active sites, and high compatibility with property-complementary materials to form heterostructures with desired synergetic effects, have demonstrated to be promising electrocatalysts for boosting the performance of sustainable energy conversion and storage devices. Nevertheless, the reaction kinetics, and in particular, the functional mechanisms of the 2D superlattice-based catalysts yet remain ambiguous. In this review, based on the recent progress of 2D superlattice materials in electrocatalysis applications, the rational design and fabrication of 2D superlattices are first summarized and the application of 2D superlattices in electrocatalysis is then specifically discussed. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and the strategies for the future design of 2D superlattice materials are outlined. This review attempts to establish an intrinsic correlation between the 2D superlattice heterostructures and the catalytic properties, so as to provide some insights into developing high-performance electrocatalysts for next-generation sustainable energy conversion and storage.

Highly Efficient and Robust Full-Color Organic Afterglow through 2D Superlattices Embedment

Purely organic afterglow (POA) originating from the slow radiative decay of stabilized triplet excited states has shown amazing potential in many fields. However, achieving highly stable POA with high phosphorescent quantum yield (PhQY) and long lifetime is still a formidable challenge owing to the intrinsically active and sensitive nature of triplet excitons. Here, triplet excitons of phosphors are protected and stabilized by embedding in tricomponent trihapto self-assembled 2D hydrogen-bonded superlattices, which not only enables deep-blue POA with high PhQY (up to 65%), ultralong lifetime (over 1300 ms) and the highest figure-of-merit at room temperature, but also achieves excellent stability capable of resisting quenching effects of oxygen, solvent, pressure, light, and heat. In addition, the POA color is tuned from deep-blue to red via efficient Förster resonance energy transfer from the deep-blue POA emitters to the fluorophores. Moreover, with the high-performance, robust, and full-color POA materials, flexible anti-counterfeit displays and direct-current (DC)-driven lifetime-encrypted color Morse Code applications are facilely realized.

Back-Gated van der Waals Heterojunction Manipulates Local Charges toward Fine-Tuning Hydrogen Evolution

Charge redistribution plays a prominent role in interpreting the intrinsic electrocatalytic mechanism. Establishing a quantitative relationship between the local charges and electrochemical performance can fundamentally update the design philosophies beyond conventional methods. We describe exertion of an external electric field in the cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc)/MoS₂ heterojunction to finely manipulate intermolecular charge transfer. The injected charges (e^- ) from CoPc to MoS₂ migrate to natural S vacancies and enhance Mo-H bonding. Moreover, the band gap of MoS₂ and CoPc can be readily tuned by the electric field, verifying band engineering at the heterointerface. In situ photoluminescence spectra and gate-dependent electrochemical measurement reveal a linear correlation between the charge accumulation and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. This approach provides a new strategy for the design of catalysts, enabling precise regulation of the electronic configuration to improve catalytic activity.
