Graphene e-tattoos for unobstructive ambulatory electrodermal activity sensing on the palm enabled by heterogeneous serpentine ribbons

Functional-hydrogel-based electronic-skin patch for accelerated healing and monitoring of skin wounds

Conductive hydrogels feature reasonable electrical performance as well as tissue-like mechanical softness, thus positioning them as promising material candidates for soft bio-integrated electronics. Despite recent advances in materials and their processing technologies, however, facile patterning and monolithic integration of functional hydrogels (e.g., conductive, low-impedance, adhesive, and insulative hydrogels) for all-hydrogel-based soft bioelectronics still poses significant challenges. Here, we report material design, fabrication, and integration strategies for an electronic-skin (e-skin) patch based on functional hydrogels. The e-skin patch was fabricated by using photolithography-compatible functional hydrogels, such as poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) hydrogel (substrate), Ag flake hydrogel (interconnection; conductivity: ∼571.43 S/cm), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrene) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogel (working electrode; impedance: ∼69.84 Ω @ 1 Hz), polydopamine (PDA) hydrogel (tissue adhesive; shear strength: ∼725.1 kPa), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel (encapsulation). The properties of these functional hydrogels closely resemble those of human tissues in terms of water content and Young's modulus, enabling stable tissue-device interfacing in dynamically changing physiological environments. We demonstrated the efficacy of the e-skin patch through its application to accelerated healing and monitoring of skin wounds in mouse models - efficient fibroblast migration, proliferation, and differentiation promoted by electric field (EF) stimulation and iontophoretic drug delivery, and monitoring of the accelerated healing process through impedance mapping. The all-hydrogel-based e-skin patch is expected to create new opportunities for various clinically-relevant tissue interfacing applications.

Designs and Applications for the Multimodal Flexible Hybrid Epidermal Electronic Systems

Research on the flexible hybrid epidermal electronic system (FHEES) has attracted considerable attention due to its potential applications in human-machine interaction and healthcare. Through material and structural innovations, FHEES combines the advantages of traditional stiff electronic devices and flexible electronic technology, enabling it to be worn conformally on the skin while retaining complex system functionality. FHEESs use multimodal sensing to enhance the identification accuracy of the wearer's motion modes, intentions, or health status, thus realizing more comprehensive physiological signal acquisition. However, the heterogeneous integration of soft and stiff components makes balancing comfort and performance in designing and implementing multimodal FHEESs challenging. Herein, multimodal FHEESs are first introduced in 2 types based on their different system structure: all-in-one and assembled, reflecting totally different heterogeneous integration strategies. Characteristics and the key design issues (such as interconnect design, interface strategy, substrate selection, etc.) of the 2 multimodal FHEESs are emphasized. Besides, the applications and advantages of the 2 multimodal FHEESs in recent research have been presented, with a focus on the control and medical fields. Finally, the prospects and challenges of the multimodal FHEES are discussed.

An Ultra-Conductive and Patternable 40 nm-Thick Polymer Film for Reliable Emotion Recognition

Understanding psychology is an important task in modern society which helps predict human behavior and provide feedback accordingly. Monitoring of weak psychological and emotional changes requires bioelectronic devices to be stretchable and compliant for unobtrusive and high-fidelity signal acquisition. Thin conductive polymer film is regarded as an ideal interface; however, it is very challenging to simultaneously balance mechanical robustness and opto-electrical property. Here, a 40 nm-thick film based on photolithographic double-network conductive polymer mediated by graphene layer is reported, which concurrently enables stretchability, conductivity, and conformability. Photolithographic polymer and graphene endow the film photopatternability, enhance stress dissipation capability, as well as improve opto-electrical conductivity (4458 S cm-1@>90% transparency) through molecular rearrangement by π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. The film is further applied onto corrugated facial skin, the subtle electromyogram is monitored, and machine learning algorithm is performed to understand complex emotions, indicating the outstanding ability for stretchable and compliant bioelectronics.

Damage-free dry transfer method using stress engineering for high-performance flexible two- and three-dimensional electronics

Advanced transfer printing technologies have enabled the fabrication of high-performance flexible and stretchable devices, revolutionizing many research fields including soft electronics, optoelectronics, bioelectronics and energy devices. Despite previous innovations, challenges remain, such as safety concerns due to toxic chemicals, the expensive equipment, film damage during the transfer process and difficulty in high-temperature processing. Thus a new transfer printing process is needed for the commercialization of high-performance soft electronic devices. Here we propose a damage-free dry transfer printing strategy based on stress control of the deposited thin films. First, stress-controlled metal bilayer films are deposited using direct current magnetron sputtering. Subsequently, mechanical bending is applied to facilitate the release of the metal bilayer by increasing the overall stress. Experimental and simulation studies elucidate the stress evolution mechanisms during the processes. By using this method, we successfully transfer metal thin films and high-temperature-treated oxide thin films onto flexible or stretchable substrates, enabling the fabrication of two-dimensional flexible electronic devices and three-dimensional multifunctional devices.

A multimodal dataset for investigating working memory in presence of music: a pilot study

Introduction

Decoding an individual's hidden brain states in responses to musical stimuli under various cognitive loads can unleash the potential of developing a non-invasive closed-loop brain-machine interface (CLBMI). To perform a pilot study and investigate the brain response in the context of CLBMI, we collect multimodal physiological signals and behavioral data within the working memory experiment in the presence of personalized musical stimuli.

Methods

Participants perform a working memory experiment called the n-back task in the presence of calming music and exciting music. Utilizing the skin conductance signal and behavioral data, we decode the brain's cognitive arousal and performance states, respectively. We determine the association of oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) data with performance state. Furthermore, we evaluate the total hemoglobin (HbT) signal energy over each music session.

Results

A relatively low arousal variation was observed with respect to task difficulty, while the arousal baseline changes considerably with respect to the type of music. Overall, the performance index is enhanced within the exciting session. The highest positive correlation between the HbO concentration and performance was observed within the higher cognitive loads (3-back task) for all of the participants. Also, the HbT signal energy peak occurs within the exciting session.

Discussion

Findings may underline the potential of using music as an intervention to regulate the brain cognitive states. Additionally, the experiment provides a diverse array of data encompassing multiple physiological signals that can be used in the brain state decoder paradigm to shed light on the human-in-the-loop experiments and understand the network-level mechanisms of auditory stimulation.

Next-Generation Cardiac Interfacing Technologies Using Nanomaterial-Based Soft Bioelectronics

Cardiac interfacing devices are essential components for the management of cardiovascular diseases, particularly in terms of electrophysiological monitoring and implementation of therapies. However, conventional cardiac devices are typically composed of rigid and bulky materials and thus pose significant challenges for effective long-term interfacing with the curvilinear surface of a dynamically beating heart. In this regard, the recent development of intrinsically soft bioelectronic devices using nanocomposites, which are fabricated by blending conductive nanofillers in polymeric and elastomeric matrices, has shown great promise. The intrinsically soft bioelectronics not only endure the dynamic beating motion of the heart and maintain stable performance but also enable conformal, reliable, and large-area interfacing with the target cardiac tissue, allowing for high-quality electrophysiological mapping, feedback electrical stimulations, and even mechanical assistance. Here, we explore next-generation cardiac interfacing strategies based on soft bioelectronic devices that utilize elastic conductive nanocomposites. We first discuss the conventional cardiac devices used to manage cardiovascular diseases and explain their undesired limitations. Then, we introduce intrinsically soft polymeric materials and mechanical restraint devices utilizing soft polymeric materials. After the discussion of the fabrication and functionalization of conductive nanomaterials, the introduction of intrinsically soft bioelectronics using nanocomposites and their application to cardiac monitoring and feedback therapy follow. Finally, comments on the future prospects of soft bioelectronics for cardiac interfacing technologies are discussed.

Flexible high-density microelectrode arrays for closed-loop brain-machine interfaces: a review

Flexible high-density microelectrode arrays (HDMEAs) are emerging as a key component in closed-loop brain-machine interfaces (BMIs), providing high-resolution functionality for recording, stimulation, or both. The flexibility of these arrays provides advantages over rigid ones, such as reduced mismatch between interface and tissue, resilience to micromotion, and sustained long-term performance. This review summarizes the recent developments and applications of flexible HDMEAs in closed-loop BMI systems. It delves into the various challenges encountered in the development of ideal flexible HDMEAs for closed-loop BMI systems and highlights the latest methodologies and breakthroughs to address these challenges. These insights could be instrumental in guiding the creation of future generations of flexible HDMEAs, specifically tailored for use in closed-loop BMIs. The review thoroughly explores both the current state and prospects of these advanced arrays, emphasizing their potential in enhancing BMI technology.

Smart Tattoo Sensors 2.0: A Ten-Year Progress Report through a Narrative Review

The increased interest in sensing tattoos reflects a shift in wearable technology, emphasizing their flexible, skin-adherent nature. These devices, driven by advancements in nanotechnology and materials science, offer highly sensitive and customizable sensors. The growing body of research in this area indicates a rising curiosity in their design and applications, with potential uses ranging from vital sign monitoring to biomarker detection. Sensing tattoos present a promising avenue in wearable healthcare technology, attracting attention from researchers, clinicians, and technology enthusiasts. The objective of this study is to analyze the development, application, and integration of the sensing tattoos in the health domain. A review was conducted on PubMed and Scopus, applying a standard checklist and a qualification process. The outcome reported 37 studies. Sensing tattoos hold transformative potential in health monitoring and physiological sensing, driven by their focus on affordability, user-friendly design, and versatile sensorization solutions. Despite their promise, ongoing refinement is essential, addressing limitations in adhesion, signal quality, biocompatibility, and regulatory complexities. Identified opportunities, including non-invasive health monitoring, multiplexed detection, and cost-effective fabrication methods, open avenues for personalized healthcare applications. However, bridging gaps in medical device standards, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance is imperative for seamless integration. A key theme calls for a holistic, user-centric approach, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration. Balancing innovation with practicality, prioritizing ethics, and fostering collaboration are crucial for the evolution of these technologies. The dynamic state of the field is evident, with active exploration of new frontiers. This overview also provides a roadmap, urging scholars, industry players, and regulators to collectively contribute to the responsible integration of sensing tattoos into daily life.

Exploring the electrical robustness of conductive textile fasteners for wearable devices in different human motion conditions

Conventional snap fasteners used in clothing are often used as electrical connectors in e-textile and wearable applications for signal transmission due to their wide availability and ease of use. Nonetheless, limited research exists on the validation of these fasteners, regarding the impact of contact-induced high-amplitude artefacts, especially under motion conditions. In this work, three types of fasteners were used as electromechanical connectors, establishing the interface between a regular sock and an acquisition device. The tested fasteners have different shapes and sizes, as well as have different mechanisms of attachment between the plug and receptacle counterparts. Experimental evaluation was performed under static conditions, slow walking, and rope jumping at a high cadence. The tests were also performed with a test mass of 140 g. Magnetic fasteners presented excellent electromechanical robustness under highly dynamic human movement with and without the additional mass. On the other hand, it was demonstrated that the Spring snap buttons (with a spring-based engaging mechanism) presented a sub-optimal performance under high motion and load conditions, followed by the Prong snap fasteners (without spring), which revealed a high susceptibility to artefacts. Overall, this work provides further evidence on the importance and reliability of clothing fasteners as electrical connectors in wearable systems.

E-Tattoos: Toward Functional but Imperceptible Interfacing with Human Skin

The human body continuously emits physiological and psychological information from head to toe. Wearable electronics capable of noninvasively and accurately digitizing this information without compromising user comfort or mobility have the potential to revolutionize telemedicine, mobile health, and both human-machine or human-metaverse interactions. However, state-of-the-art wearable electronics face limitations regarding wearability and functionality due to the mechanical incompatibility between conventional rigid, planar electronics and soft, curvy human skin surfaces. E-Tattoos, a unique type of wearable electronics, are defined by their ultrathin and skin-soft characteristics, which enable noninvasive and comfortable lamination on human skin surfaces without causing obstruction or even mechanical perception. This review article offers an exhaustive exploration of e-tattoos, accounting for their materials, structures, manufacturing processes, properties, functionalities, applications, and remaining challenges. We begin by summarizing the properties of human skin and their effects on signal transmission across the e-tattoo-skin interface. Following this is a discussion of the materials, structural designs, manufacturing, and skin attachment processes of e-tattoos. We classify e-tattoo functionalities into electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and chemical sensing, as well as wound healing and other treatments. After discussing energy harvesting and storage capabilities, we outline strategies for the system integration of wireless e-tattoos. In the end, we offer personal perspectives on the remaining challenges and future opportunities in the field.

Low-impedance tissue-device interface using homogeneously conductive hydrogels chemically bonded to stretchable bioelectronics

Stretchable bioelectronics has notably contributed to the advancement of continuous health monitoring and point-of-care type health care. However, microscale nonconformal contact and locally dehydrated interface limit performance, especially in dynamic environments. Therefore, hydrogels can be a promising interfacial material for the stretchable bioelectronics due to their unique advantages including tissue-like softness, water-rich property, and biocompatibility. However, there are still practical challenges in terms of their electrical performance, material homogeneity, and monolithic integration with stretchable devices. Here, we report the synthesis of a homogeneously conductive polyacrylamide hydrogel with an exceptionally low impedance (~21 ohms) and a reasonably high conductivity (~24 S/cm) by incorporating polyaniline-decorated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrene). We also establish robust adhesion (interfacial toughness: ~296.7 J/m2) and reliable integration between the conductive hydrogel and the stretchable device through on-device polymerization as well as covalent and hydrogen bonding. These strategies enable the fabrication of a stretchable multichannel sensor array for the high-quality on-skin impedance and pH measurements under in vitro and in vivo circumstances.

Polymeric Conductive Adhesive-Based Ultrathin Epidermal Electrodes for Long-Term Monitoring of Electrophysiological Signals

Electrophysiology, exploring vital electrical phenomena in living organisms, anticipates broader integration into daily life through wearable devices and epidermal electrodes. However, addressing the challenges of the electrode durability and motion artifacts is essential to enable continuous and long-term biopotential signal monitoring, presenting a hurdle for its seamless implementation in daily life. To address these challenges, an ultrathin polymeric conductive adhesive, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate)/polyvinyl alcohol/d-sorbitol (PPd) electrode with enhanced adhesion, stretchability, and skin conformability, is presented. The skin conformability and stability of electrodes is designed by theoretical criteria obtained by mechanical analysis. Thus, impedance stability is obtained over 1-week of daily life, and the PPd electrode addresses the challenges related to durability during prolonged usage. Proving stability in electromyography (EMG) signals during high-intensity exercise, the wireless PPd measurement system exhibits high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) signals even in situations involving significant and repetitive skin deformation. Throughout continuous 1 week-long electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring in daily life, the system consistently preserves signal quality, underscoring the heightened durability and applicability of the PPd measurement system.

Engineering of graphene-based composites with hexagonal boron nitride and PEDOT:PSS for sensing applications

A unique nanomaterial has been developed for sweat analysis, including glucose level monitoring. Simple resusable low-cost sensors from composite materials based on graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and conductive PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate) polymer have been developed and fabricated via 2D printing on flexible substrates. The sensors were tested as biosensors using different water-based solutions. A strong increase in the current response (several orders of magnitude) was observed for aqua vapors or glucose solution vapors. This property is associated with the sorption capacity of graphene synthesized in a volume of plasma jets and thus having many active centers on the surface. The structure and properties of graphene synthesized in a plasma are different from those of graphene created by other methods. As a result, the current response for a wearable sensor is 3-5 orders of magnitude higher for the reference blood glucose concentration range of 4-14 mM. It has been found that the most promising sensor with the highest response was fabricated based on the graphene:PEDOT:PSS composite. The graphene:h-BN:PEDOT:PSS (h-BN is hexagonal boron nitride) sensors demonstrated a longer response and the highest response after the functionalization of the sensors with a glucose oxidase enzyme. The reusable wearable graphene:PEDOT:PSS glucose sensors on a paper substrate demonstrated a current response of 10-10 to 10-5 A for an operating voltage of 0.5 V and glucose range of 4-10 mM.

2D Materials in Flexible Electronics: Recent Advances and Future Prospectives

Flexible electronics have recently gained considerable attention due to their potential to provide new and innovative solutions to a wide range of challenges in various electronic fields. These electronics require specific material properties and performance because they need to be integrated into a variety of surfaces or folded and rolled for newly formatted electronics. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for flexible electronics due to their unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, as well as their compatibility with other materials, enabling the creation of various flexible electronic devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of the progress made in developing flexible electronic devices using 2D materials. In addition, it highlights the key aspects of materials, scalable material production, and device fabrication processes for flexible applications, along with important examples of demonstrations that achieved breakthroughs in various flexible and wearable electronic applications. Finally, we discuss the opportunities, current challenges, potential solutions, and future investigative directions about this field.

Recent Advances in Patterning Strategies for Full-Color Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Metal halide perovskites have emerged as promising light-emitting materials for next-generation displays owing to their remarkable material characteristics including broad color tunability, pure color emission with remarkably narrow bandwidths, high quantum yield, and solution processability. Despite recent advances have pushed the luminance efficiency of monochromic perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) to their theoretical limits, their current fabrication using the spin-coating process poses limitations for fabrication of full-color displays. To integrate PeLEDs into full-color display panels, it is crucial to pattern red-green-blue (RGB) perovskite pixels, while mitigating issues such as cross-contamination and reductions in luminous efficiency. Herein, we present state-of-the-art patterning technologies for the development of full-color PeLEDs. First, we highlight recent advances in the development of efficient PeLEDs. Second, we discuss various patterning techniques of MPHs (i.e., photolithography, inkjet printing, electron beam lithography and laser-assisted lithography, electrohydrodynamic jet printing, thermal evaporation, and transfer printing) for fabrication of RGB pixelated displays. These patterning techniques can be classified into two distinct approaches: in situ crystallization patterning using perovskite precursors and patterning of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals. This review highlights advancements and limitations in patterning techniques for PeLEDs, paving the way for integrating PeLEDs into full-color panels.

Stretchable surface electromyography electrode array patch for tendon location and muscle injury prevention

Surface electromyography (sEMG) can provide multiplexed information about muscle performance. If current sEMG electrodes are stretchable, arrayed, and able to be used multiple times, they would offer adequate high-quality data for continuous monitoring. The lack of these properties delays the widespread use of sEMG in clinics and in everyday life. Here, we address these constraints by design of an adhesive dry electrode using tannic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, and PEDOT:PSS (TPP). The TPP electrode offers superior stretchability (~200%) and adhesiveness (0.58 N/cm) compared to current electrodes, ensuring stable and long-term contact with the skin for recording (>20 dB; >5 days). In addition, we developed a metal-polymer electrode array patch (MEAP) comprising liquid metal (LM) circuits and TPP electrodes. The MEAP demonstrated better conformability than commercial arrays, resulting in higher signal-to-noise ratio and more stable recordings during muscle movements. Manufactured using scalable screen-printing, these MEAPs feature a completely stretchable material and array architecture, enabling real-time monitoring of muscle stress, fatigue, and tendon displacement. Their potential to reduce muscle and tendon injuries and enhance performance in daily exercise and professional sports holds great promise.

Solvent-Free and Skin-Like Supramolecular Ion-Conductive Elastomers with Versatile Processability for Multifunctional Ionic Tattoos and On-Skin Bioelectronics

The development of stable and biocompatible soft ionic conductors, alternatives to hydrogels and ionogels, will open up new avenues for the construction of stretchable electronics. Here, a brand-new design, encapsulating a naturally occurring ionizable compound by a biocompatible polymer via high-density hydrogen bonds, resulting in a solvent-free supramolecular ion-conductive elastomer (SF-supra-ICE) that eliminates the dehydration problem of hydrogels and possesses excellent biocompatibility, is reported. The SF-supra-ICE with high ionic conductivity (>3.3 × 10-2  S m-1 ) exhibits skin-like softness and strain-stiffening behaviors, excellent elasticity, breathability, and self-adhesiveness. Importantly, the SF-supra-ICE can be obtained by a simple water evaporation step to solidify the aqueous precursor into a solvent-free nature. Therefore, the aqueous precursor can act as inks to be painted and printed into customized ionic tattoos (I-tattoos) for the construction of multifunctional on-skin bioelectronics. The painted I-tattoos exhibit ultraconformal and seamless contact with human skin, enabling long-term and high-fidelity recording of various electrophysiological signals with extraordinary immunity to motion artifacts. Human-machine interactions are achieved by exploiting the painted I-tattoos to transmit the electrophysiological signals of human beings. Stretchable I-tattoo electrode arrays, manufactured by the printing method, are demonstrated for multichannel digital diagnosis of the health condition of human back muscles and spine.

Miniature GaN optoelectronic temperature sensor

The combination of plastic optical fiber (POF) with monolithically integrated transmitter and receiver is becoming increasingly attractive for the development of miniature optoelectronic sensing systems. Here, we propose a temperature sensing system by integrating a GaN optoelectronic chip with a POF and aluminum (Al) reflector. Owing to the overlap between electroluminescence and responsivity spectra of multiple quantum well (MQW) diodes, both the transmitter and the receiver having identical MQW structures are monolithically integrated on a tiny GaN chip by using the same fabrication process flow. Environmental temperature change leads to thermal deformation in the Al reflector, which reflects the transmitted light back with a light pulse. The reflected light is coupled into the guided POF again and sensed by the on-chip receiver. Finally, the temperature information is read out as electrical signals. When the ambient temperature changes from 20.1°C to 100°C, the optically induced electrical signal decreases from -3.04 µA to -3.13 µA. The results suggest that the monolithically integrated GaN device offers a promising option for optoelectronic temperature sensing systems.

A Multi-Day Wearable Surface EMG E-Tattoo for Fatigue Monitoring

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a commonly used technique for the non-invasive measurement of muscle activity. However, the traditional electrodes used for sEMG often have limitations regarding their long-term wearability. This study explored the feasibility of a wearable platform using a tattoo-like epidermal electrode (e-tattoo) for multi-day sEMG monitoring. Our sEMG e-tattoo provided stable and reliable sEMG signals over three days of application comparable to conventional gel electrodes. In addition, the e-tattoo has great resistance to motion artifacts and, therefore, maintains a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and signal-to-motion ratio (SMR) during dynamic activities such as cycling. This robust wearable platform opens up new avenues for developing future wearable sEMG devices and advancing dynamic muscle fatigue research.Clinical relevance- The proposed wearable sEMG system can provide continuous and non-invasive monitoring of muscle activity, providing insights for improving rehabilitation and EMG-based prosthesis development for patients.

Creating Stretchable Electronics from Dual Layer Flex-PCB for Soft Robotic Cardiac Mapping Catheters

The authors present in this study the development of a novel method for creating stretchable electronics from dual-layer flex printed circuit boards (flex-PCBs) as a platform for soft robotic sensor arrays (SRSAs) for cardiac voltage mapping applications. There is a crucial need for devices that utilize multiple sensors and provide high performance signal acquisition for cardiac mapping. Previously, our group demonstrated how single-layer flex-PCB can be postprocessed to create a stretchable electronic sensing array. In this work, a detailed fabrication process for creating a dual-layer multielectrode flex-PCB SRSA is presented, along with relevant parameters to achieve optimal postprocessing with a laser cutter. The dual-layer flex-PCB SRSA's ability to acquire electrical signals is demonstrated both in vitro as well as in vivo on a Leporine cardiac surface. These SRSAs could be extended into full-chamber cardiac mapping catheter applications. Our results show a significant contribution towards the scalable use of dual-layer flex-PCB for stretchable electronics.

Human-Machine Interaction via Dual Modes of Voice and Gesture Enabled by Triboelectric Nanogenerator and Machine Learning

With the development of science and technology, human-machine interaction has brought great benefits to the society. Here, we design a voice and gesture signal translator (VGST), which can translate natural actions into electrical signals and realize efficient communication in human-machine interface. By spraying silk protein on the copper of the device, the VGST can achieve improved output and a wide frequency response of 20-2000 Hz with a high sensitivity of 167 mV/dB, and the resolution of frequency detection can reach 0.1 Hz. By designing its internal structure, its resonant frequency and output voltage can be adjusted. The VGST can be used as a high-fidelity platform to effectively recover recorded music and can also be combined with machine learning algorithms to realize the function of speech recognition with a high accuracy rate of 97%. It also has good antinoise performance to recognize speech correctly even in noisy environments. Meanwhile, in gesture recognition, the triboelectric translator is able to recognize simple hand gestures and to judge the distance between hand and the VGST based on the principle of electrostatic induction. This work demonstrates that triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology can have great application prospects and significant advantages in human-machine interaction and high-fidelity platforms.

Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Applications of Graphene in Five Senses, Nervous System, and Artificial Muscles

Graphene remains of great interest in biomedical applications because of biocompatibility. Diseases relating to human senses interfere with life satisfaction and happiness. Therefore, the restoration by artificial organs or sensory devices may bring a bright future by the recovery of senses in patients. In this review, we update the most recent progress in graphene based sensors for mimicking human senses such as artificial retina for image sensors, artificial eardrums, gas sensors, chemical sensors, and tactile sensors. The brain-like processors are discussed based on conventional transistors as well as memristor related neuromorphic computing. The brain-machine interface is introduced for providing a single pathway. Besides, the artificial muscles based on graphene are summarized in the means of actuators in order to react to the physical world. Future opportunities remain for elevating the performances of human-like sensors and their clinical applications.
