General low-temperature growth of two-dimensional nanosheets from layered and nonlayered materials

Simultaneously Promoted Water Resistance and CO2 Selectivity in Methanol Oxidation Over Pd/CoOOH: Synergy of Co-OH and the Pd-Olatt-Co Interface

Catalytic purification of industrial oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) is hindered by the presence of water vapor that attacks the active sites of conventional noble metal-based catalysts and the insufficient mineralization that leads to the generation of hazardous intermediates. Developing catalysts simultaneously with excellent water resistance and a high intermediate suppression ability is still a great challenge. Herein, we proposed a simple strategy to synthesize a Pd/CoOOH catalyst that contains abundant hydroxyl groups and lattice oxygen species, over which a negligible effect was observed on CH3OH conversion with 3 vol % water vapor, while a remarkable conversion reduction of 24% was observed over Pd/Co3O4. Moreover, the low-temperature CO2 selectivity over Pd/CoOOH is significantly enhanced in comparison with Pd/Co(OH)2. The high concentration of surface hydroxyl groups on Pd/CoOOH enhances the water resistance owing to the accelerated activation of H2O to generate Co-OH, which replaces the consumed hydroxyl and facilitates the quick dissociation of surface H2O through timely desorption. Additionally, the presence of Pd-Olatt-Co promotes electron transport from Co to Pd, leading to improved metal-support interactions and weakened metal-O bonds. This in turn enhances the catalyst's capacity to efficaciously convert intermediates. This study sheds new insights into designing multifunctional catalytic platforms for efficient industrial OVOC purification as well as other heterogeneous oxidation reactions.

Large-Area Epitaxial Growth of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Over the past decade, research on atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has expanded rapidly due to their unique properties such as high carrier mobility, significant excitonic effects, and strong spin-orbit couplings. Considerable attention from both scientific and industrial communities has fully fueled the exploration of TMDs toward practical applications. Proposed scenarios, such as ultrascaled transistors, on-chip photonics, flexible optoelectronics, and efficient electrocatalysis, critically depend on the scalable production of large-area TMD films. Correspondingly, substantial efforts have been devoted to refining the synthesizing methodology of 2D TMDs, which brought the field to a stage that necessitates a comprehensive summary. In this Review, we give a systematic overview of the basic designs and significant advancements in large-area epitaxial growth of TMDs. We first sketch out their fundamental structures and diverse properties. Subsequent discussion encompasses the state-of-the-art wafer-scale production designs, single-crystal epitaxial strategies, and techniques for structure modification and postprocessing. Additionally, we highlight the future directions for application-driven material fabrication and persistent challenges, aiming to inspire ongoing exploration along a revolution in the modern semiconductor industry.

Synthesis, Modulation, and Application of Two-Dimensional TMD Heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures have attracted a lot of attention due to their rich material diversity and stack geometry, precise controllability of structure and properties, and potential practical applications. These heterostructures not only overcome the inherent limitations of individual materials but also enable the realization of new properties through appropriate combinations, establishing a platform to explore new physical and chemical properties at micro-nano-pico scales. In this review, we systematically summarize the latest research progress in the synthesis, modulation, and application of 2D TMD heterostructures. We first introduce the latest techniques for fabricating 2D TMD heterostructures, examining the rationale, mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages of each strategy. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of characteristic modulation in 2D TMD heterostructures and discuss some approaches to achieve novel functionalities. Then, we summarize the representative applications of 2D TMD heterostructures. Finally, we highlight the challenges and future perspectives in the synthesis and device fabrication of 2D TMD heterostructures and provide some feasible solutions.

Friends not Foes: Exfoliation of Non-van der Waals Materials

ConspectusTwo-dimensional materials have been a focus of study for decades, resulting in the development of a library of nanosheets made by a variety of methods. However, many of these atomically thin materials are exfoliated from van der Waals (vdW) compounds, which inherently have weaker bonding between layers in the bulk crystal. Even though there are diverse properties and structures within this class of compounds, it would behoove the community to look beyond these compounds toward the exfoliation of non-vdW compounds as well. A particular class of non-vdW compounds that may be amenable to exfoliation are the ionically bonded layered materials, which are structurally similar to vdW compounds but have alkali ions intercalated between the layers. Although initially they may have been more difficult to exfoliate due to a lack of methodology beyond mechanical exfoliation, many synthesis techniques have been developed that have been used successfully in exfoliating non-vdW materials. In fact, as we will show, in some cases it has even proven to be advantageous to start the exfoliation from a non-vdW compound.The method we will highlight here is chemical exfoliation, which has developed significantly and is better understood mechanistically compared to when it was first conceived. Encompassing many methods, such as acid/base reactions, solvent reactions, and oxidative extractions, chemical exfoliation can be tailored to the delamination of non-vdW materials, which opens up many more possibilities of compounds to study. In addition, beginning with intercalated analogues of vdW materials can even lead to more consistent and higher quality results, overcoming some challenges associated with chemical exfoliation in general. To exemplify this, we will discuss our group's work on the synthesis of a 1T'-WS2 monolayer ink. By starting with K0.5WS2, the exfoliated 1T'-WS2 nanosheets obtained were larger and more uniform in thickness than those from previous syntheses beginning with vdW materials. The crystallinity of the nanosheets was high enough that films made from this ink were superconducting. We will also show how soft chemical methods can be used to make new phases from existing compounds, such as HxCrS2 from NaCrS2. This material was found to have alternating amorphous and crystalline layers. Its biphasic structure improved the material's performance as a battery electrode, enabling reversible Cr redox and faster Na-ion diffusion. From these and other examples, we will see how chemical exfoliation of non-vdW materials compares to other methods, as well as how this technique can be further extended to known compounds that can be deintercalated electrochemically and to quasi-one-dimensional crystals.

Advances in Inorganic Foam Materials Fabricated Via Blowing Strategy: A Comprehensive Review

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with excellent properties and widespread applications have been explosively investigated. However, their conventional synthetic methods exhibit concerns of limited scalability, complex purification process, and incompetence of prohibiting their restacking. The blowing strategy, characterized by gas-template, low-cost, and high-efficiency, presents a valuable avenue for the synthesis of 2D-based foam materials and thereby addresses these constraints. Whereas, its comprehensive introduction has been rarely outlined so far. This review commences with a synopsis of the blowing strategy, elucidating its development history, the statics and kinetics of the blowing process, and the choice of precursor and foaming agents. Thereafter, we dwell at length on across-the-board foams enabled by the blowing route, like BxCyNz foams, carbon foams, and diverse composite foams consisting of carbon and metal compounds. Following that, a wide-ranging evaluation of the functionality of the foam products in fields such as energy storage, electrocatalysis, adsorption, etc. is discussed, revealing their distinctive strength originated from the foam structure. Finally, after concluding the current progress, we provide some personal discussions on the existing challenges and future research priorities in this rapidly developing method.

Van der Waals Epitaxial Growth of Ultrathin Indium Antimonide on Arbitrary Substrates through Low-Thermal Budget

III-V semiconductors possess high mobility, high frequency response, and detection sensitivity, making them potentially attractive for beyond-silicon electronics applications. However, the traditional heteroepitaxy of III-V semiconductors is impeded by a significant lattice mismatch and the necessity for extreme vacuum and high temperature conditions, thereby impeding their in situ compatibility with flexible substrates and silicon-based circuits. In this study, a novel approach is presented for fabricating ultrathin InSb single-crystal nanosheets on arbitrary substrates with a thickness as thin as 2.4 nm using low-thermal-budget van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy through chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In particular, in situ growth has been successfully achieved on both silicon-based substrates and flexible polyimide (PI) substrates. Notably, the growth temperature required for InSb nanosheets (240 °C) is significantly lower than that employed in back-end-of-line processes (400 °C). The field effect transistor devices based on fabricated ultrathin InSb nanosheets exhibit ultra-high on-off ratio exceeding 108 and demonstrate minimal gate leakage currents. Furthermore, these ultrathin InSb nanosheets display p-type characteristics with hole mobilities reaching up to 203 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room temperatures. This study paves the way for achieving heterogeneous integration of III-V semiconductors and facilitating their application in flexible electronics.

Low Temperature Synthesis of 2D p-Type α-In2Te3 with Fast and Broadband Photodetection

2DA 2 III B 3 VI ${\mathrm{A}}_2^{{\mathrm{III}}}{\mathrm{B}}_3^{{\mathrm{VI}}}$ compounds (A = Al, Ga, In, and B = S, Se, and Te) with intrinsic structural defects offer significant opportunities for high-performance and functional devices. However, obtaining 2D atomic-thin nanoplates with non-layered structure on SiO2/Si substrate at low temperatures is rare, which hinders the study of their properties and applications at atomic-thin thickness limits. In this study, the synthesis of ultrathin, non-layered α-In2Te3 nanoplates is demonstrated using a BiOCl-assisted chemical vapor deposition method at a temperature below 350 °C on SiO2/Si substrate. Comprehensive characterization results confirm the high-quality single crystal is the low-temperature cubic phase α-In2Te3 , possessing a noncentrosymmetric defected ZnS structure with good second harmonic generation. Moreover, α-In2Te3 is revealed to be a p-type semiconductor with a direct and narrow bandgap value of 0.76 eV. The field effect transistor exhibits a high mobility of 18 cm2 V-1 s-1, and the photodetector demonstrates stable photoswitching behavior within a broadband photoresponse from 405 to 1064 nm, with a satisfactory response time of τrise = 1 ms. Notably, the α-In2Te3 nanoplates exhibit good stability against ambient environments. Together, these findings establish α-In2Te3 nanoplates as promising candidates for next-generation high-performance photonics and electronics.

Low-Temperature Vapor-Phase Growth of 2D Metal Chalcogenides

2D metal chalcogenides (MCs) have garnered significant attention from both scientific and industrial communities due to their potential in developing next-generation functional devices. Vapor-phase deposition methods have proven highly effective in fabricating high-quality 2D MCs. Nevertheless, the conventionally high thermal budgets required for synthesizing 2D MCs pose limitations, particularly in the integration of multiple components and in specialized applications (such as flexible electronics). To overcome these challenges, it is desirable to reduce the thermal energy requirements, thus facilitating the growth of various 2D MCs at lower temperatures. Numerous endeavors have been undertaken to develop low-temperature vapor-phase growth techniques for 2D MCs, and this review aims to provide an overview of the latest advances in low-temperature vapor-phase growth of 2D MCs. Initially, the review highlights the latest progress in achieving high-quality 2D MCs through various low-temperature vapor-phase techniques, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), metal-organic CVD, plasma-enhanced CVD, atomic layer deposition (ALD), etc. The strengths and current limitations of these methods are also evaluated. Subsequently, the review consolidates the diverse applications of 2D MCs grown at low temperatures, covering fields such as electronics, optoelectronics, flexible devices, and catalysis. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are briefly discussed, considering the most recent progress in the field.

Lithium Ion Intercalation-Induced Metal-Insulator Transition in Inclined-Standing Grown 2D Non-Layered Cr2S3 Nanosheets

Gate-controlled ionic intercalation in the van der Waals gap of 2D layered materials can induce novel phases and unlock new properties. However, this strategy is often unsuitable for densely packed 2D non-layered materials. The non-layered rhombohedral Cr2S3 is an intrinsic heterodimensional superlattice with alternating layers of 2D CrS2 and 0D Cr1/3. Here an innovative chemical vapor deposition method is reported, utilizing strategically modified metal precursors to initiate entirely new seed layers, yields ultrathin inclined-standing grown 2D Cr2S3 nanosheets with edge instead of face contact with substrate surfaces, enabling rapid all-dry transfer to other substrates while ensuring high crystal quality. The unconventional ordered vacancy channels within the 0D Cr1/3 layers, as revealed by cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscope, permitting the insertion of Li+ ions. An unprecedented metal-insulator transition, with a resistance modulation of up to six orders of magnitude at 300 K, is observed in Cr2S3-based ionic field-effect transistors. Theoretical calculations corroborate the metallization induced by Li-ion intercalation. This work sheds light on the understanding of growth mechanism, structure-property correlation and highlights the diverse potential applications of 2D non-layered Cr2S3 superlattice.

Precision ion separation via self-assembled channels

Selective nanofiltration membranes with accurate molecular sieving offer a solution to recover rare metals and other valuable elements from brines. However, the development of membranes with precise sub-nanometer pores is challenging. Here, we report a scalable approach for membrane fabrication in which functionalized macrocycles are seamlessly oriented via supramolecular interactions during the interfacial polycondensation on a polyacrylonitrile support layer. The rational incorporation of macrocycles enables the formation of nanofilms with self-assembled channels holding precise molecular sieving capabilities and a threshold of 6.6 ångström, which corresponds to the macrocycle cavity size. The resulting membranes provide a 100-fold increase in selectivity for Li+/Mg2+ separation, outperforming commercially available and state-of-the-art nanocomposite membranes for lithium recovery. Their performance is further assessed in high-recovery tests under realistic nanofiltration conditions using simulated brines or concentrated seawater with various Li+ levels and demonstrates their remarkable potential in ion separation and Li+ recovery applications.

Ultrasensitive Optical Detection and Elimination of Residual Microtumors with a Postoperative Implantable Hydrogel Sensor for Preventing Cancer Recurrence

In vivo optical imaging of trace biomarkers in residual microtumors holds significant promise for cancer prognosis but poses a formidable challenge. Here, a novel hydrogel sensor is designed for ultrasensitive and specific imaging of the elusive biomarker. This hydrogel sensor seamlessly integrates a molecular beacon nanoprobe with fibroblasts, offering both high tissue retention capability and an impressive signal-to-noise ratio for imaging. Signal amplification is accomplished through exonuclease I-mediated biomarker recycling. The resulting hydrogel sensor sensitively detects the biomarker carcinoembryonic antigen with a detection limit of 1.8 pg mL-1 in test tubes. Moreover, it successfully identifies residual cancer nodules with a median diameter of less than 2 mm in mice bearing partially removed primary triple-negative breast carcinomas (4T1). Notably, this hydrogel sensor is proven effective for the sensitive diagnosis of invasive tumors in post-surgical mice with infiltrating 4T1 cells, leveraging the role of fibroblasts in locally enriching tumor cells. Furthermore, the residual microtumor is rapidly photothermal ablation by polydopamine-based nanoprobe under the guidance of visualization, achieving ≈100% suppression of tumor recurrence and lung metastasis. This work offers a promising alternative strategy for visually detecting residual microtumors, potentially enhancing the prognosis of cancer patients following surgical interventions.

Highly Robust Room-Temperature Interfacial Ferromagnetism in Ultrathin Co2Si Nanoplates

The reduced dimensionality and interfacial effects in magnetic nanostructures open the feasibility to tailor magnetic ordering. Here, we report the synthesis of ultrathin metallic Co2Si nanoplates with a total thickness that is tunable to 2.2 nm. The interfacial magnetism coupled with the highly anisotropic nanoplate geometry leads to strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and robust hard ferromagnetism at room temperature, with a Curie temperature (TC) exceeding 950 K and a coercive field (HC) > 4.0 T at 3 K and 8750 Oe at 300 K. Theoretical calculations suggest that ferromagnetism originates from symmetry breaking and undercoordinated Co atoms at the Co2Si and SiO2 interface. With protection by the self-limiting intrinsic oxide, the interfacial ferromagnetism of the Co2Si nanoplates exhibits excellent environmental stability. The controllable growth of ambient stable Co2Si nanoplates as 2D hard ferromagnets could open exciting opportunities for fundamental studies and applications in Si-based spintronic devices.

Recent advance of high-quality perovskite nanostructure and its application in flexible photodetectors

Flexible photodetectors (PDs) have garnered increasing attention for their potential applications in diverse fields, including weather monitoring, smart robotics, smart textiles, electronic eyes, wearable biomedical monitoring devices, and so on. Notably, perovskite nanostructures have emerged as a promising material for flexible PDs due to their distinctive features, such as a large optical absorption coefficient, tunable band gap, extended photoluminescence decay time, high carrier mobility, low defect density, long exciton diffusion lengths, strong self-trapped effect, good mechanical flexibility, and facile synthesis methods. In this review, we first introduce various synthesis methods for perovskite nanostructures and elucidate their corresponding optical and electrical properties, encompassing quantum dots, nanocrystals, nanowires, nanobelts, nanosheets, single-crystal thin films, polycrystalline thin films, and nanostructured arrays. Furthermore, the working mechanism and key performance parameters of optoelectronic devices are summarized. The review also systematically compiles recent advancements in flexible PDs based on various nanostructured perovskites. Finally, we present the current challenges and prospects for the development of perovskite nanostructures-based flexible PDs.

Twisted van der Waals Quantum Materials: Fundamentals, Tunability, and Applications

Twisted van der Waals (vdW) quantum materials have emerged as a rapidly developing field of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. These materials establish a new central research area and provide a promising platform for studying quantum phenomena and investigating the engineering of novel optoelectronic properties such as single photon emission, nonlinear optical response, magnon physics, and topological superconductivity. These captivating electronic and optical properties result from, and can be tailored by, the interlayer coupling using moiré patterns formed by vertically stacking atomic layers with controlled angle misorientation or lattice mismatch. Their outstanding properties and the high degree of tunability position them as compelling building blocks for both compact quantum-enabled devices and classical optoelectronics. This paper offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements in the understanding and manipulation of twisted van der Waals structures and presents a survey of the state-of-the-art research on moiré superlattices, encompassing interdisciplinary interests. It delves into fundamental theories, synthesis and fabrication, and visualization techniques, and the wide range of novel physical phenomena exhibited by these structures, with a focus on their potential for practical device integration in applications ranging from quantum information to biosensors, and including classical optoelectronics such as modulators, light emitting diodes, lasers, and photodetectors. It highlights the unique ability of moiré superlattices to connect multiple disciplines, covering chemistry, electronics, optics, photonics, magnetism, topological and quantum physics. This comprehensive review provides a valuable resource for researchers interested in moiré superlattices, shedding light on their fundamental characteristics and their potential for transformative applications in various fields.

2D Materials in Flexible Electronics: Recent Advances and Future Prospectives

Flexible electronics have recently gained considerable attention due to their potential to provide new and innovative solutions to a wide range of challenges in various electronic fields. These electronics require specific material properties and performance because they need to be integrated into a variety of surfaces or folded and rolled for newly formatted electronics. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for flexible electronics due to their unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, as well as their compatibility with other materials, enabling the creation of various flexible electronic devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of the progress made in developing flexible electronic devices using 2D materials. In addition, it highlights the key aspects of materials, scalable material production, and device fabrication processes for flexible applications, along with important examples of demonstrations that achieved breakthroughs in various flexible and wearable electronic applications. Finally, we discuss the opportunities, current challenges, potential solutions, and future investigative directions about this field.

Polarization Reversal of Group IV-VI Semiconductors with Pucker-Like Structure: Mechanism Dissecting and Function Demonstration

Polarization imaging presents advantages in capturing spatial, spectral, and polarization information across various spectral bands. It can improve the perceptual ability of image sensors and has garnered more applications. Despite its potential, challenges persist in identifying band information and implementing image enhancement using polarization imaging. These challenges often necessitate integrating spectrometers or other components, resulting in increased complexities within image processing systems and hindering device miniaturization trends. Here, the characteristics of anisotropic absorption reversal are systematically elucidated in pucker-like group IV-VI semiconductors MX (M = Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) through theoretical predictions and experimental validations. Additionally, the fundamental mechanisms behind anisotropy reversal in different bands are also explored. The photodetector is constructed by utilizing MX as a light-absorbing layer, harnessing polarization-sensitive photoresponse for virtual imaging. The results indicate that the utilization of polarization reversal photodetectors holds advantages in achieving further multifunctional integration within the device structure while simplifying its configuration, including band information identification and image enhancement. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of polarization reversal mechanisms and presents a promising and reliable approach for achieving dual-band image band identification and image enhancement without additional auxiliary components.

Two-Dimensional Oxide Crystals for Device Applications: Challenges and Opportunities

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) oxide crystals have garnered considerable attention because of their remarkable physical properties and potential for versatile applications. In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the design, preparation, and application of ultrathin 2D oxides, providing many opportunities for new-generation advanced technologies. This review focuses on the controllable preparation of 2D oxide crystals and their applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Based on their bonding nature, the various types of 2D oxide crystals are first summarized, including both layered and nonlayered crystals, as well as their current top-down and bottom-up synthetic approaches. Subsequently, in terms of the unique physical and electrical properties of 2D oxides, recent advances in device applications are emphasized, including photodetectors, field-effect transistors, dielectric layers, magnetic and ferroelectric devices, memories, and gas sensors. Finally, conclusions and future prospects of 2D oxide crystals are presented. It is hoped that this review will provide comprehensive and insightful guidance for the development of 2D oxide crystals and their device applications.

van der Waals 2D transition metal dichalcogenide/organic hybridized heterostructures: recent breakthroughs and emerging prospects of the device

The near-atomic thickness and organic molecular systems, including organic semiconductors and polymer-enabled hybrid heterostructures, of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDs) can modulate their optoelectronic and transport properties outstandingly. In this review, the current understanding and mechanism of the most recent and significant breakthrough of novel interlayer exciton emission and its modulation by harnessing the band energy alignment between TMDs and organic semiconductors in a TMD/organic (TMDO) hybrid heterostructure are demonstrated. The review encompasses up-to-date device demonstrations, including field-effect transistors, detectors, phototransistors, and photo-switchable superlattices. An exploration of distinct traits in 2D-TMDs and organic semiconductors delves into the applications of TMDO hybrid heterostructures. This review provides insights into the synthesis of 2D-TMDs and organic layers, covering fabrication techniques and challenges. Band bending and charge transfer via band energy alignment are explored from both structural and molecular orbital perspectives. The progress in emission modulation, including charge transfer, energy transfer, doping, defect healing, and phase engineering, is presented. The recent advancements in 2D-TMDO-based optoelectronic synaptic devices, including various 2D-TMDs and organic materials for neuromorphic applications are discussed. The section assesses their compatibility for synaptic devices, revisits the operating principles, and highlights the recent device demonstrations. Existing challenges and potential solutions are discussed. Finally, the review concludes by outlining the current challenges that span from synthesis intricacies to device applications, and by offering an outlook on the evolving field of emerging TMDO heterostructures.

Low-temperature growth of MoS2 on polymer and thin glass substrates for flexible electronics

Recent advances in two-dimensional semiconductors, particularly molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), have enabled the fabrication of flexible electronic devices with outstanding mechanical flexibility. Previous approaches typically involved the synthesis of MoS2 on a rigid substrate at a high temperature followed by the transfer to a flexible substrate onto which the device is fabricated. A recurring drawback with this methodology is the fact that flexible substrates have a lower melting temperature than the MoS2 growth process, and that the transfer process degrades the electronic properties of MoS2. Here we report a strategy for directly synthesizing high-quality and high-crystallinity MoS2 monolayers on polymers and ultrathin glass substrates (thickness ~30 µm) at ~150 °C using metal-organic chemical vapour deposition. By avoiding the transfer process, the MoS2 quality is preserved. On flexible field-effect transistors, we achieve a mobility of 9.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and a positive threshold voltage of +5 V, which is essential for reducing device power consumption. Moreover, under bending conditions, our logic circuits exhibit stable operation while phototransistors can detect light over a wide range of wavelengths from 405 nm to 904 nm.

Phase Engineering of 2D Spinel-Type Manganese Oxides

2D magnetic materials have been of interest due to their unique long-range magnetic ordering in the low-dimensional regime and potential applications in spintronics. Currently, most studies are focused on strippable van der Waals magnetic materials with layered structures, which typically suffer from a poor stability and scarce species. Spinel oxides have a good environmental stability and rich magnetic properties. However, the isotropic bonding and close-packed nonlayered crystal structure make their 2D growth challenging, let alone the phase engineering. Herein, a phase-controllable synthesis of 2D single-crystalline spinel-type oxides is reported. Using the van der Waals epitaxy strategy, the thicknesses of the obtained tetragonal and hexagonal manganese oxide (Mn3 O4 ) nanosheets can be tuned down to 7.1 nm and one unit cell (0.7 nm), respectively. The magnetic properties of these two phases are evaluated using vibrating-sample magnetometry and first-principle calculations. Both structures exhibit a Curie temperature of 48 K. Owing to its ultrathin geometry, the Mn3 O4 nanosheet exhibits a superior ultraviolet detection performance with an ultralow noise power density of 0.126 pA Hz-1/2 . This study broadens the range of 2D magnetic semiconductors and highlights their potential applications in future information devices.

Bottom-up Synthesis of Nanosheets at Various Interfaces

Nanostructured materials with high aspect ratios have been widely studied for their unique properties. In particular, nanosheets have safety, dispersibility, and nanosized effects, and nanosheets with exceptionally small thicknesses exhibit unique properties. For non-exfoliable materials, the bottom-up nanosheet growth using various interfaces as templates have been investigated. This review article presents the synthesis of nanosheets at the interfaces and layered structure; it explains the features of each interface type, its advantages, and its uniqueness. The interfaces work as templates for nanosheet synthesis. We can easily use the liquid-liquid and gas-liquid interfaces as the templates; however, the thickness of nanosheets usually becomes thick because it allows materials to grow in thickness. The solid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces can prevent nanosheets from growing in thickness. However, the removal of template solids is required after the synthesis. The layered structures of various materials provide two-dimensional reaction fields between the layers. These methods have high versatility, and the nanosheets synthesized by these methods are thin. Finally, this review examines the key challenges and opportunities associated with scalable nanosheet synthesis methods for industrial production.

Nitrogen Pretreatment of Growth Substrates for Vacancy-Saturated MoS2

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) are considered promising materials for optoelectronics due to their unique optical and electric properties. However, their potential has been limited by the occurrence of atomic vacancies during synthesis. While post-treatment processes have demonstrated the passivation of such vacancies, they increase process complexity and affect the TMDC's quality. We here introduce the concept of pretreatment as a facile and powerful route to solve the problem of vacancies in MoS2. Low-temperature nitridation of the sapphire substrate prior to growth provides a nondestructive method to MoS2 modification without introducing new processing steps or increasing the thermal budget. Spectroscopic characterization and atomic-resolution microscopy reveal the incorporation of nitrogen from the sapphire surface layer into chalcogen vacancies. The resulting MoS2 with nitrogen-saturated defects shows a decrease in midgap states and more intrinsic doping as confirmed by ab initio calculations and optoelectronic measurements. The demonstrated pretreatment method opens up new routes toward future, high-performance 2D electronics, as evidenced by a 3-fold reduction in contact resistance and a 10-fold improved performance of 2D photodetectors.

Controlled Synthesis and Accurate Doping of Wafer-Scale 2D Semiconducting Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDCs) possess atomically thin thickness, a dangling-bond-free surface, flexible band structure, and silicon-compatible feature, making them one of the most promising channels for constructing state-of-the-art field-effect transistors in the post-Moore's era. However, the existing 2D semiconducting TMDCs fall short of meeting the industry criteria for practical applications in electronics due to their small domain size and the lack of an effective approach to modulate intrinsic physical properties. Therefore, it is crucial to prepare and dope 2D semiconducting TMDCs single crystals with wafer size. In this review, the up-to-date progress regarding the wafer-scale growth of 2D semiconducting TMDC polycrystalline and single-crystal films is systematically summarized. The domain orientation control of 2D TMDCs and the seamless stitching of unidirectionally aligned 2D islands by means of substrate design are proposed. In addition, the accurate and uniform doping of 2D semiconducting TMDCs and the effect on electronic device performances are also discussed. Finally, the dominating challenges pertaining to the enhancement of the electronic device performances of TMDCs are emphasized, and further development directions are put forward. This review provides a systematic and in-depth summary of high-performance device applications of 2D semiconducting TMDCs.

High-Crystallinity BiOCl Nanosheets as Efficient Photocatalysts for Norfloxacin Antibiotic Degradation

Semiconductor photocatalysts are essential materials in the field of environmental remediation. Various photocatalysts have been developed to solve the contamination problem of norfloxacin in water pollution. Among them, a crucial ternary photocatalyst, BiOCl, has attracted extensive attention due to its unique layered structure. In this work, high-crystallinity BiOCl nanosheets were prepared using a one-step hydrothermal method. The obtained BiOCl nanosheets showed good photocatalytic degradation performance, and the degradation rate of highly toxic norfloxacin using BiOCl reached 84% within 180 min. The internal structure and surface chemical state of BiOCl were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-visible diffuse reflectance (UV-vis), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and photoelectric techniques. The higher crystallinity of BiOCl closely aligned molecules with each other, which improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and showed high degradation efficiency for norfloxacin antibiotics. Furthermore, the obtained BiOCl nanosheets possess decent photocatalytic stability and recyclability.
