Facile conversion of water to functional molecules and cross-linked polymeric films with efficient clusteroluminescence

Water as a Reactant: DABCO-Catalyzed Hydration of Activated Alkynes for the Synthesis of Divinyl Ethers

A practical and efficient addition of water to readily available activated alkynes delivering divinyl ethers is reported. The reaction proceeds with full atom economy in a very straightforward experimental procedure. Additionally, of all the tertiary amines studied to catalyze the reaction, the best and most efficient is clearly DABCO (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane). Finally, the solvent choice is crucial for the efficiency of this process and we have found that the reaction is best performed in wet dichloromethane for propiolic esters and alkynones, and in wet acetonitrile for propiolamides.

Edible Ultralong Organic Phosphorescent Excipient for Afterglow Visualizing the Quality of Tablets

Stimuli-responsive ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) materials that in response to external factors such as light, heat, and atmosphere have raised a tremendous research interest in fields of optoelectronics, anticounterfeiting labeling, biosensing, and bioimaging. However, for practical applications in life and health fields, some fundamental requirements such as biocompatibility and biodegradability are still challenging for conventional inorganic and aromatic-based stimuli-responsive UOP systems. Herein, an edible excipient, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCC), of which UOP properties exhibit intrinsically multistimuli responses to excited wavelength, pressure, and moisture, is reported. Impressively, as a UOP probe, SCC enables nondestructive detection of hardness with superb contrast (signal-to-background ratio up to 120), while exhibiting a response sensitivity to moisture that is more than 5.0 times higher than that observed in conventional fluorescence. Additionally, its applicability for hardness monitoring and high-moisture warning for tablets containing a moisture-sensitive drug, with the quality of the drug being determinable through the naked-eye visible UOP, is demonstrated. This work not only elucidates the reason for stimulative corresponding properties in SCC but also makes a major step forward in extending the potential applications of stimuli-responsive UOP materials in manufacturing high-quality and safe medicine.

Water-Involved Carbon-Nitrogen Triple-Bond Monomer Based Polymerization toward Processable Functional Polyamides under Ambient Conditions

Polyamide plays a pivotal role in engineering thermoplastics. Constrained by the harsh conditions and arduous procedures for its industrial synthesis, developing facile synthesis of polyamides is still challengeable and holds profound significance. Herein, we successfully utilized water as one of the monomers to synthesize functional polyamides under ambient conditions. A powerful multicomponent polymerization of water, isocyanides, and chlorooximes was established in phosphate-buffered saline. Soluble and thermally stable polyamides with high weight-average molecular weights (up to 53 900) were obtained in excellent yields (up to 95 %). The polymerization exhibits unique polymerization-induced emission characteristics, successfully converting non-emissive monomers into unconventional emissive polymers. Notably, the resultant polyamides could undergo effective post-modification via the hydroxyl-yne click reaction. By incorporating various functional groups into the polyamide, its emission color could be fine-tuned from blue to green and to red. Remarkably, the refractive index (n) of the polyamide at 589 nm could be increased from 1.6173 to 1.7227 and the Δn could be unprecedentedly as high as 0.1054 for non-heavy atom-containing polymers after post-modification, and its micron-thick films exhibited excellent transparency in the visible region. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization toward novel polyamides but also opens up an avenue for their versatile functionalization.

Narrowband clusteroluminescence with 100% quantum yield enabled by through-space conjugation of asymmetric conformation

Different from traditional organic luminescent materials based on covalent delocalization, clusteroluminescence from nonconjugated luminogens relies on noncovalent through-space conjugation of electrons. However, such spatial electron delocalization is usually weak, resulting in low luminescent efficiency and board emission peak due to multiple vibrational energy levels. Herein, several nonconjugated luminogens are constructed by employing biphenyl as the building unit to reveal the structure-property relationship and solve current challenges. The intramolecular through-space conjugation can be gradually strengthened by introducing building units and stabilized by rigid molecular skeleton and multiple intermolecular interactions. Surprisingly, narrowband clusteroluminescence with full width at half-maximum of 40 nm and 100% efficiency is successfully achieved via an asymmetric conformation, exhibiting comparable performance to the traditional conjugated luminogens. This work realizes highly efficient and narrowband clusteroluminescence from nonconjugated luminogens and highlights the essential role of structural conformation in manipulating the photophysical properties of unconventional luminescent materials.

Recent Progress in Nonconventional Luminescent Macromolecules and their Applications

Traditional π-conjugated luminescent macromolecules typically suffer from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and high cytotoxicity, and they require complex synthetic processes. In contrast, nonconventional luminescent macromolecules (NCLMs) with nonconjugated structures possess excellent biocompatibility, ease of preparation, unique luminescence behavior, and emerging applications in optoelectronics, biology, and medicine. NCLMs are currently believed to produce inherent luminescence due to through-space conjugation of overlapping electron orbitals in solid/aggregate states. However, as experimental facts continue to exceed expectations or even overturn some previous assumptions, there is still controversy about the detailed luminous mechanism of NCLMs, and extensive studies are needed to further explore the mechanism. This Perspective highlights recent progress in NCLMs and classifies and summarizes these advances from the viewpoint of molecular design, mechanism exploration, applications, and challenges and prospects. The aim is to provide guidance and inspiration for the huge fundamental and practical potential of NCLMs.

Bright Luminescence of Free Radical TEMPO Enabled by Electrochemiluminescence Technique

Radicals can feature theoretically 100% light utilization owing to their nonelectron spin-forbidden transition and represent the most advanced luminescent materials at present. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) acts as a typically stable radical with very broad applications. However, their luminescent properties have not been discovered to date. In the present work, we observed the bright electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emission of TEMPO with a higher efficiency (72.3%) via the electrochemistry and coreactant strategies for the first time. Moreover, the radical-based ECL achieved high detection toward boron acid with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 1.9 nM. This study offers a new approach to generate emissions for some unconventional luminophores and makes a major breakthrough in the field of new luminescent materials as well.

A 3D nanoscale optical disk memory with petabit capacity

High-capacity storage technologies are needed to meet our ever-growing data demands1,2. However, data centres based on major storage technologies such as semiconductor flash devices and hard disk drives have high energy burdens, high operation costs and short lifespans2,3. Optical data storage (ODS) presents a promising solution for cost-effective long-term archival data storage. Nonetheless, ODS has been limited by its low capacity and the challenge of increasing its areal density4,5. Here, to address these issues, we increase the capacity of ODS to the petabit level by extending the planar recording architecture to three dimensions with hundreds of layers, meanwhile breaking the optical diffraction limit barrier of the recorded spots. We develop an optical recording medium based on a photoresist film doped with aggregation-induced emission dye, which can be optically stimulated by femtosecond laser beams. This film is highly transparent and uniform, and the aggregation-induced emission phenomenon provides the storage mechanism. It can also be inhibited by another deactivating beam, resulting in a recording spot with a super-resolution scale. This technology makes it possible to achieve exabit-level storage by stacking nanoscale disks into arrays, which is essential in big data centres with limited space.

A Self-Assemble Supramolecular Film with Humidity Visualization Enabled by Clusteroluminescence

Clusteroluminescence (CL) has recently gained significant attention due to its unique through-space interactions associated with a high dependence on the aggregation of subgroups. These distinct features could easily transform the stimuli into visual fluorescence and monitor the fluctuation of the environment but have not received sufficient attention before. In this work, supramolecular films are designed based on the neutralization reaction of anhydride groups and the self-assembly of dynamic covalent disulfide bonds in NaOH aqueous solution. The self-assembly of hydrophilic carboxylate chromophores and hydrophobic disulfide-containing five-membered rings could be observed by the variation of the aggregation state of carboxylate in CL. Furthermore, the dynamic cross-linking films obtained with water-sensitive carboxylate chromophores could alter the aggregation distance stimulated by surrounding water vapor, causing the emission wavelength to change from 534 to 508 nm by varying the relative humidity. This work not only provides an approach to monitor the self-assembly of clusteroluminogens but also offers new strategies for designing stimuli-responsive materials that utilize the intrinsic features of CL.

Hydrogen-Bonding-Driven Nontraditional Photoluminescence of a β-Enamino Ester

Nontraditional luminogens (NTLs) do not contain any conventional chromophores (large π-conjugated structures), but they do show intrinsic photoluminescence. To achieve photoluminescence from NTLs, it is necessary to increase the extent of through-space conjugation (TSC) and suppress nonradiative decay. Incorporating strong physical interactions such as hydrogen bonding is an effective strategy to achieve this. In this work, we carried out comparative studies on the photoluminescence behaviors of two β-enamino esters with similar chemical structures, namely methyl 3-aminocrotonate (MAC) and methyl (E)-3-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-2-butenoate (MPB). MAC crystal emits blue fluorescence under UV irradiation. The critical cluster concentration of MAC in ethanol solutions was determined by studying the relationship between the photoluminescence intensity (UV-visible absorbance) and concentration. Furthermore, MAC exhibits solvatochromism, and its emission wavelength redshifts as the solvent polarity increases. On the contrary, MPB is non-emissive in both solid state and solutions. Crystal structures and theoretical calculation prove that strong inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of large amounts of TSC of MAC molecules in aggregated states. No hydrogen bonds and thus no effective TSC can be formed between or within MPB molecules, and this is the reason for its non-emissive nature. This work provides a deeper understanding of how hydrogen bonding contributes to the luminescence of NTLs.
