Unveiling the spatially confined oxidation processes in reactive electrochemical membranes

Efficient electrochemical oxidation of antibiotic wastewater using a graphene-loaded PbO2 membrane anode: Mechanisms and applications

This paper aims to develop a flow-through electrochemical system with a series of graphene nanoparticles loaded PbO2 reactive electrochemical membrane electrodes (GNPs-PbO2 REMs) on porous Ti substrates with pore sizes of 100, 150, 300 and 600 μm, and apply them to treat antibiotic wastewater. Among them, the GNPs-PbO2 with Ti substrate of 150 μm (Ti-150/GNPs-PbO2) had superior electrochemical degradation performance over the REMs with other pore sizes due to its smaller crystal size, larger electrochemical active specific area, lower charge-transfer impedance and larger oxygen evolution potential. Under the relatively optimized conditions of initial pH of 5, current density of 15 mA cm-2, and membrane flux of 4.20 m3 (m2·h)-1, the Ti-150/GNPs-PbO2 REM realized 99.34% of benzylpenicillin sodium (PNG) removal with an EE/O of 6.52 kWh m-3. Its excellent performance could be explained as the increased mass transfer. Then three plausible PNG degradation pathways in the flow-through electrochemical system were proposed, and great stability and safety of Ti-150/GNPs-PbO2 REM were demonstrated. Moreover, a single-pass Ti-150/GNPs-PbO2 REM system with five-modules in series was designed, which could consistently treat real antibiotic wastewater in compliance with disposal requirements of China. Thus, this study evidenced that the flow-through electrochemical system with the Ti-150/GNPs-PbO2 REM is an efficient alternative for treating antibiotic wastewater.

Cell Wall Binding Strategies Based on Cu3SbS3 Nanoparticles for Selective Bacterial Elimination and Promotion of Infected Wound Healing

Utilizing nanomaterials as an alternative to antibiotics, with a focus on maintaining high biosafety, has emerged as a promising strategy to combat antibiotic resistance. Nevertheless, the challenge lies in the indiscriminate attack of nanomaterials on both bacterial and mammalian cells, which limits their practicality. Herein, Cu3SbS3 nanoparticles (NPs) capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) are discovered to selectively adsorb and eliminate bacteria without causing obvious harm to mammalian cells, thanks to the interaction between O of N-acetylmuramic acid in bacterial cell walls and Cu of the NPs. Coupled with the short diffusion distance of ROS in the surrounding medium, a selective antibacterial effect is achieved. Additionally, the antibacterial mechanism is then identified: Cu3SbS3 NPs catalyze the generation of O2•-, which has subsequently been conversed by superoxide dismutase to H2O2. The latter is secondary catalyzed by the NPs to form •OH and 1O2, initiating an in situ attack on bacteria. This process depletes bacterial glutathione in conjunction with the disruption of the antioxidant defense system of bacteria. Notably, Cu3SbS3 NPs are demonstrated to efficiently impede biofilm formation; thus, a healing of MRSA-infected wounds was promoted. The bacterial cell wall-binding nanoantibacterial agents can be widely expanded through diversified design.

Highly Selective Electrochemical Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation through Oxygen Atom Transfer from Water

The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of ketones is a crucial oxygen atom transfer (OAT) process used for ester production. Traditionally, Baeyer-Villiger oxidation is accomplished by thermally oxidizing the OAT from stoichiometric peroxides, which are often difficult to handle. Electrochemical methods hold promise for breaking the limitation of using water as the oxygen atom source. Nevertheless, existing demonstrations of electrochemical Baeyer-Villiger oxidation face the challenges of low selectivity. We report in this study a strategy to overcome this challenge. By employing a well-known water oxidation catalyst, Fe2O3, we achieved nearly perfect selectivity for the electrochemical Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone. Mechanistic studies suggest that it is essential to produce surface hydroperoxo intermediates (M-OOH, where M represents a metal center) that promote the nucleophilic attack on ketone substrates. By confining the reactions to the catalyst surfaces, competing reactions (e.g., dehydrogenation, carboxylic acid cation rearrangements, and hydroxylation) are greatly limited, thereby offering high selectivity. The surface-initiated nature of the reaction is confirmed by kinetic studies and spectroelectrochemical characterizations. This discovery adds nucleophilic oxidation to the toolbox of electrochemical organic synthesis.

Enhanced oxidation of organic pollutants by regulating the interior reaction region of reactive electrochemical membranes

Reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) emerges as an attractive strategy for the elimination of refractory organic pollutants that exist in wastewater. However, the limited reaction sites in traditional REMs greatly hinder its practical application. Herein, a feed-through coating methodology was developed to realize the uniform loading of SnO2-Sb catalysts on the interior surface of a REM. The uniformly coated REM (Unif-REM) exhibited 2.4 times higher reaction kinetics (0.29 min-1) than that of surface coated REM (Surf-REM) for the degradation of 2 mM 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), rendering an energy consumption as low as 0.016 kWh gTOC-1. The fast degradation of various emerging contaminants, e.g., sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ofloxacin (OFLX), and tetracycline (TC), also confirms its superior oxidation capability. Besides, the Unif-REM exhibited good performance in generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and a relatively long service lifetime. The simulation of spatial current distribution demonstrates that the interior reaction region in the Unif-REM channels can be drastically extended, thereby maximizing the surface coupling of mass diffusion and electron transfer. This study offers an in-depth look at the spatially confined reactions in REM and provides a reference for the design of electrochemical systems with economically efficient water purification.
