Highly active, ultra-low loading single-atom iron catalysts for catalytic transfer hydrogenation

Enable biomass-derived alcohols mediated alkylation and transfer hydrogenation

A single-atom catalyst with generally regarded inert Zn-N4 motifs derived from ZIF-8 is unexpectedly efficient for the activation of alcohols, enabling alcohol-mediated alkylation and transfer hydrogenation. C-alkylation of nitriles, ketones, alcohols, N-heterocycles, amides, keto acids, and esters, and N-alkylation of amines and amides all go smoothly with the developed method. Taking the α-alkylation of nitriles with alcohols as an example, the α-alkylation starts from the (1) nitrogen-doped carbon support catalyzed dehydrogenation of alcohols into aldehydes, which further condensed with nitriles to give vinyl nitriles, followed by (2) transfer hydrogenation of C=C bonds in vinyl nitriles on Zn-N4 sites. The experimental results and DFT calculations reveal that the Lewis acidic Zn-N4 sites promote step (2) by activating the alcohols. This is the first example of highly efficient single-atom catalysts for various organic transformations with biomass-derived alcohols as the alkylating reagents and hydrogen donors.

Defects tune the acidic strength of amorphous aluminosilicates

Crystalline zeolites have high acidity but limited utility due to microporosity, whereas mesoporous amorphous aluminosilicates offer better porosity but lack sufficient acidity. In this work, we investigated defect engineering to fine-tune the acidity of amorphous acidic aluminosilicates (AAS). Here we introduced oxygen vacancies in AAS to synthesize defective acidic aluminosilicates (D-AAS). 1H, 27Al, and 17O solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies indicated that defects induced localized structural changes around the acidic sites, thereby modifying their acidity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies substantiated that oxygen vacancies alter the chemical environment of Brønsted acidic sites of AAS. The effect of defect creation in AAS on its acidity and catalytic behavior was demonstrated using four different acid-catalyzed reactions namely, styrene oxide ring opening, vesidryl synthesis, Friedel-Crafts alkylation, and jasminaldehyde synthesis. The defects played a role in activating reactants during AAS-catalyzed reactions, enhancing the overall catalytic process. This was supported by in-situ FTIR, which provided insights into the molecular-level reaction mechanism and the role of defects in reactant activation. This study demonstrates defect engineering as a promising approach to fine-tune acidity in amorphous aluminosilicates, bridging the porosity and acidity gaps between mesoporous amorphous aluminosilicates and crystalline zeolites.

Regulating Second-Shell Coordination in Cobalt Single-Atom Catalysts toward Highly Selective Hydrogenation

Manipulating the local coordination environment of central metal atoms in single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a powerful strategy to exploit efficient SACs with optimal electronic structures for various applications. Herein, Co-SACs featured by Co single atoms with coordinating S atoms in the second shell dispersed in a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix have been developed toward the selective hydrogenation of halo-nitrobenzene. The location of the S atom in the model Co-SAC is verified through synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The resultant Co-SACs containing second-coordination shell S atoms demonstrate excellent activity and outstanding durability for selective hydrogenation, superior to most precious metal-based catalysts. In situ characterizations and theoretical results verify that high activity and selectivity are attributed to the advantageous formation of the Co-O bond between p-chloronitrobenzene and Co atom at Co1N4-S moieties and the lower free energy and energy barriers of the reaction. Our findings unveil the correlation between the performance and second-shell coordination atom of SACs.

Highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles supported by magnetically separable Fe3O4@ SiO2 nanotube for catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics is a crucial industrial reaction, but there are still challenges in developing nanocatalysts with stable active centers, yet easily recyclable characteristics. Here, a magnetically separable Pd/Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocatalyst was prepared through the seeding growth of silica on the Fe3O4 nanocrystal cluster (NC) followed by in situ reduction of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on the amino group modified Fe3O4@SiO2 nannotube (NT). The nanocatalyst showed good activity and stability in the hydrogenation of a series of nitroaromatics as the Pd NPs were highly dispersed on the nanotubes. Meanwhile, it could be easily separated from the reaction solution and well-redispersed in the solvent for the next-round reaction due to the superparamagnetic property of the Fe3O4 NC and the good dispersibility of silica in many organic solvents. The magnetically separable nanocatalyst combined the high activity of the nanocatalyst and the convenient separation of a traditional heterogeneous catalyst, which effectively promote the practical application of nanomaterials in catalysis.

Tadpole-Like Carbon Nanotube with Fe Nanoparticle Encapsulated at the Head and Zn Single-Atom Anchored on the Body: One-Pot Carbonization for Tetramodal Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Precise integration of diverse therapeutic approaches into nanomaterials is the key to the development of multimodal synergistic cancer therapy. In this work, tadpole-like carbon nanotubes with Fe nanoparticle encapsulated at the head and Zn single-atom anchored on the body (Fe@CNT-Zn) is precisely designed and facilely prepared via one-pot carbonization. In vitro studies revealed the integration of chemotherapy (CT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) in Fe@CNT-Zn as well as the near-infrared light (NIR)-responsive cascade therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, in vivo studies demonstrated the NIR-triggered cascade-amplifying synergistic cancer therapy in a B16 tumor-bearing mouse model. The results not only showcased the Fe@CNT-Zn as a potential tetramodal therapeutic platform, but also demonstrated a proof-of-concept on metal-organic framework-based "one stone for multiple birds" strategy for in situ functionalization of carbon materials.

Strengthening the Metal-Acid Interactions by Using CeO2 as Regulators of Precisely Placing Pt Species in ZSM-5 for Furfural Hydrogenation

Understanding the synergism between the metal site and acid site is of great significance in boosting the efficiency of bi-functional catalysts in many heterogeneous reactions, particularly in biomass upgrading. Herein, a "confined auto-redox" strategy is reported to fix CeO2-anchored Pt atoms on the inner wall of a ZSM-5 cage, achieving the target of finely controlling the placements of the two active sites. Compared with the conventional surface-supported counterpart, the encapsulated Pt/CeO2@ZSM-5 catalyst possesses remarkably-improved activity and selectivity, which can convert >99% furfural into cyclopentanone with 97.2% selectivity in 6 h at 160 °C. Besides the excellent catalytic performance, the ordered metal-acid distribution also makes such kind of catalyst an ideal research subject for metal-acid interactions. The following mechanization investigation reveals that the enhancement is strongly related to the unique encapsulation structure, which promotes the migration of the reactants over different active sites, thereby contributing to the tandem reaction.

Tuning Active Site Flexibility by Defect Engineering of Graphene Ribbon Edge-hosted Fe-N3 Sites

Nitrogen-doped, carbon-supported transition metal catalysts are excellent for several reactions. Structural engineering of M-Nx sites to boost catalytic activity is rarely studied. Here, we demonstrate that the structural flexibility of Fe-N3 site is vital for tuning the electronic structure of Fe atoms and regulating the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) activity. By introducing carbon defects, we construct Fe-N3 sites with varying Fe-N bond lengths distinguishable by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We investigate the CTH activity by density-functional theory and microkinetic calculations and reveal that the vertical displacement of the Fe atom out of the plane of the support, induced by the Fe-N3 distortion, raises the Fe3 d z 2 ${3{d}_{{z}^{2}}{\rm \ }}$ orbital and strengthens binding. We propose that the activity is controlled by the relaxation of the reconstructed site, which is further affected by Fe-N bond length, an excellent activity descriptor. We elucidate the origin of the CTH activity and principles for high-performing Fe-N-C catalysts by defect engineering.
