Abstract
Introduction: This study reports characteristics of Hispanic women with breast cancer with respect to physical function, body mass index (BMI), and depression. Methods: This retrospective study included 322 Hispanic women with breast cancer. Physical function and fatigue were assessed using the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement System-Physical Function (PROMIS-PF) short form and PROMIS-Fatigue (PROMISE-F) short form. In addition, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, sit to stand in 30 s (STS30) test, four-stage balance test (4SB), and grip strength (GS) were measured. Depression was identified using Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-2 and extracted from medical chart. Results: Nearly 40.8% were obese, and 20.8% had depression. Compared to normal BMI patients, mean PROMIS-F score was significantly higher among overweight and obese patients. The mean STS30 score was significantly lower in obese patients, compared to normal BMI patients. Regression analysis showed that the odds of depression were higher with increasing TUG and lower PROMIS-F, STS30, and GS. Conclusion: Hispanic women with breast cancer have substantial loss of physical function, and this is exaggerated if they are obese, overweight, or depressed. Clinicians caring for this population should screen them for the presence of loss of physical function, BMI, and depression.

Abstract
Importance Breast cancer mortality is complex and traditional approaches that seek to identify determinants of mortality assume that their effects on mortality are stationary across geographic space and scales. Objective To identify geographic variation in the associations of population demographics, environmental, lifestyle, and health care access with breast cancer mortality at the US county-level. Design, Setting, and Participants This geospatial cross-sectional study used data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database on adult female patients with breast cancer. Statistical and spatial analysis was completed using adjusted mortality rates from 2015 to 2019 for 2176 counties in the US. Data were analyzed July 2022. Exposures County-level population demographics, environmental, lifestyle, and health care access variables were obtained from open data sources. Main Outcomes and Measures Model coefficients describing the association between 18 variables and age-adjusted breast cancer mortality rate. Compared with a multivariable linear regression (OLS), multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) relaxed the assumption of spatial stationarity and allowed for the magnitude, direction, and significance of coefficients to change across geographic space. Results Both OLS and MGWR models agreed that county-level age-adjusted breast cancer mortality rates were significantly positively associated with obesity (OLS: β, 1.21; 95% CI, 0.88 to 1.54; mean [SD] MGWR: β, 0.72 [0.02]) and negatively associated with proportion of adults screened via mammograms (OLS: β, -1.27; 95% CI, -1.70 to -0.84; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -1.07 [0.16]). Furthermore, the MGWR model revealed that these 2 determinants were associated with a stationary effect on mortality across the US. However, the MGWR model provided important insights on other county-level factors differentially associated with breast cancer mortality across the US. Both models agreed that smoking (OLS: β, -0.65; 95% CI, -0.98 to -0.32; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -0.75 [0.92]), food environment index (OLS: β, -1.35; 95% CI, -1.72 to -0.98; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -1.69 [0.70]), exercise opportunities (OLS: β, -0.56; 95% CI, -0.91 to -0.21; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -0.59 [0.81]), racial segregation (OLS: β, -0.60; 95% CI, -0.89 to -0.31; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -0.47 [0.41]), mental health care physician ratio (OLS: β, -0.93; 95% CI, -1.44 to -0.42; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -0.48 [0.92]), and primary care physician ratio (OLS: β, -1.46; 95% CI, -2.13 to -0.79; mean [SD] MGWR: β, -1.06 [0.57]) were negatively associated with breast cancer mortality, and that light pollution was positively associated (OLS: β, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.72; mean [SD] MGWR: β, 0.27 [0.04]). But in the MGWR model, the magnitude of effect sizes and significance varied across geographical regions. Inversely, the OLS model found that disability was not a significant variable for breast cancer mortality, yet the MGWR model found that it was significantly positively associated in some geographical locations. Conclusions and Relevance This cross-sectional study found that not all social determinants associated with breast cancer mortality are spatially stationary and provides spatially explicit insights for public health practitioners to guide geographically targeted interventions.

Abstract
It is important to clarify the associations between modifiable lifestyle factors such as physical activity and breast cancer prognosis to enable the development of evidence-based survivorship recommendations. We performed a systematic review and meta-analyses to summarise the evidence on the relationship between postbreast cancer diagnosis physical activity and mortality, recurrence and second primary cancers. We searched PubMed and Embase through 31st October 2021 and included 20 observational studies and three follow-up observational analyses of patients enrolled in clinical trials. In linear dose-response meta-analysis of the observational studies, each 10-unit increase in metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-h/week higher recreational physical activity was associated with 15% and 14% lower risk of all-cause (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8%-22%, studies = 12, deaths = 3670) and breast cancer-specific mortality (95% CI: 4%-23%, studies = 11, deaths = 1632), respectively. Recreational physical activity was not associated with breast cancer recurrence (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.91-1.05, studies = 6, deaths = 1705). Nonlinear dose-response meta-analyses indicated 48% lower all-cause and 38% lower breast cancer-specific mortality with increasing recreational physical activity up to 20 MET-h/week, but little further reduction in risk at higher levels. Predefined subgroup analyses across strata of body mass index, hormone receptors, adjustment for confounders, number of deaths, menopause and physical activity intensities were consistent in direction and magnitude to the main analyses. Considering the methodological limitations of the included studies, the independent Expert Panel concluded 'limited-suggestive' likelihood of causality for an association between recreational physical activity and lower risk of all-cause and breast cancer-specific mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review the biologic mechanisms that may be operative between physical activity and survival after breast cancer. RECENT FINDINGS Physical activity decreases risk of mortality from breast cancer by up to 40%. Several biologic mechanisms have been hypothesized to explain this association. Previous cohort studies and randomized trials have examined the primary mechanisms that appear to be operative, which involve a decrease in sex hormone levels, insulin resistance, and inflammation. The evidence is still inconsistent and several limitations in the existing literature exist. Understanding the biologic mechanisms involved in the association of physical activity and breast cancer survival will provide more precision to physical activity guidelines for cancer survival. To achieve this objective, future research should include direct measurements of physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and health-related fitness to provide a more comprehensive assessment of these factors and their association with biomarkers and survival after breast cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of patients with breast, prostate or blood cancer, regarding their (1) engagement with exercise and physical activity during treatment and in the months following standard care, and (2) the meanings attached to these lifestyle behaviours. DESIGN A qualitative study using focus groups. The groups were audio recorded, transcribed and analysed using Framework analysis. SETTING A hospital-based cancer treatment centre in the South-West of England. PARTICIPANTS Eighteen people who had either completed treatment or were currently on maintenance therapy for breast, prostate or blood cancer (non-Hodgkin lymphoma or Hodgkin lymphoma). RESULTS Participants reported treatment limiting their ability to engage in exercise and physical activity. However, participants were aware of the physiological, emotional and social benefits of exercise and expressed a desire to maintain a physically active lifestyle before, during and after treatment. They noted a lack of concrete guidance and appropriate exercise classes for people with cancer and felt poorly informed about the type, intensity, duration and frequency of exercise they should be undertaking. As such, participants reported making decisions on their own, relying on their intuition and listening to their bodies to gauge whether they were doing enough exercise (or not). CONCLUSIONS Participants were aware of the benefits of a physically active lifestyle during and following cancer treatment, but were not familiar with exercise and physical activity guidelines for people living with and beyond cancer. There is a need for healthcare professionals, academics and policy makers to determine how exercise and physical activity can be supported in clinical settings in realistic and meaningful ways accommodating individual patient circumstances.

Abstract
One of the most important trends in chemotherapy is the development of green chemotropic drugs with maximal activity and minimal side effects. The nanoencapsulation of phytochemical oils with natural polymers has been documented as a promising approach to producing nanodrugs with sustainable bioactivity and prolonged stability. In this context, Syzygium aromaticum essential oil (SAEO) and ultrasound-assisted deacetylated chitosan (UCS3) were successfully extracted from clove buds and squid pens, respectively. Grafting of UCS3 by ρ-coumaric acid (ρCA) has been performed to fabricate the ρCACS nanogel which was used for nanoencapsulation of SAEO to yield SAEO-loaded nanogel (ρCACS@SAEO). The findings of spectral, thermal, and morphological analyses have confirmed the success of the formation of new materials and SAEO encapsulation, as well. Based on the findings of the in vitro antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer studies, the nanoencapsulation of SAEO by ρCACS has significantly boosted its chemotherapeutic effects, compared to unencapsulated oil. Therefore, ρCACS@SAEO nanogel could be considered as a multifunctional chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive agent for prevention or therapy of pathologies induced by oxidative stress, microbial infection, and breast and skin cancer.

Abstract
There are well-known racial/ethnic disparities in the prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity, as well as breast cancer risk and survival. However, most of the current scientific evidence that serves as a foundation for nutrition and physical activity guidelines is based on studies conducted in predominantly non-Hispanic White populations. Similarly, exercise, diet, or lifestyle intervention trials for breast cancer prevention and survivorship are scarce in racial/ethnic minority populations. We review the current evidence for racial/ethnic disparities in obesity and breast cancer risk and survival (we are focusing on obesity, because this is considered an ASCO priority, and studies conducted in the United States), discuss the evolution of nutrition/physical activity guidelines for cancer prevention and control, and provide an overview of lifestyle interventions, including barriers and facilitators in implementation and dissemination science among minority populations underrepresented in research. There is a critical need to include racially/ethnically diverse populations in cancer prevention and control research or to specifically target minority populations in which disparities are known to exist to achieve much needed health equity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the relationship between physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QOL) among Hispanic and non-Hispanic white breast cancer (BC) cases and population-based controls from the New Mexico 'Long-Term Quality of Life Study'. METHODS Self-reported PA (low, moderate, vigorous MET hours/week) at baseline and follow-up interviews (12-15 years) were available for 391 cases and controls and modeled using multiple linear regressions with SF-36 mean composite scores for physical and mental health. The change in PA from baseline to follow-up and interactions with ethnicity were also examined. Models were adjusted for age at diagnosis/baseline interview, education, comorbidities, body mass index, and change in PA. RESULTS PA intensities at each timepoint did not differ by case/control status; however, the change in vigorous PA was lower among cases (p = 0.03). At follow-up, low intensity PA increased mental health QOL scores among cases; however, the interaction between low intensity PA and ethnicity was statistically significant among controls indicating decreased mental health among Hispanics (p = 0.02). Change in moderate PA was associated with increased physical and mental health among cases (physical: β = 0.186, p = 0.008; mental: β = 0.225, p = 0.001) and controls (physical: β = 0.220, p < 0.0001; mental: β = 0.193, p = 0.002), when controlling for confounders. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that all levels of PA are important for mental health among BC cases, while activities of higher intensity are important for physical health among women overall. The statistical interaction observed between ethnicity and low intensity PA among controls for mental health warrants further research to provide a meaningful interpretation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the first leading cause of women cancer-related deaths worldwide. While there are many proposed treatments for breast cancer, low efficacy, toxicity, and resistance are still major therapeutic obstacles. Thus, there is a need for safer and more effective therapeutic approaches. Because of the direct link between obesity and carcinogenesis, energy restriction mimetic agents (ERMAs) such as the antidiabetic agent, metformin was proposed as a novel antiproliferative agent. However, the anticancer dose of metformin alone is relatively high and impractical to be implemented safely in patients. The current work aimed to sensitize resistant breast cancer cells to metformin's antiproliferative effect using the natural potential anticancer agent, tangeretin. METHODS The possible synergistic combination between metformin and tangeretin was initially evaluated using MTT cell viability assay in different breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and their resistant phenotype). The possible mechanisms of synergy were investigated via Western blotting analysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) measurement, annexin/PI assay, cell cycle analysis, and wound healing assay. RESULTS The results indicated the ability of tangeretin to improve the anticancer activity of metformin. Interestingly, the improved activity was almost equally observed in both parental and resistant cancer cells, which underlines the importance of this combination in cases of the emergence of resistance. The synergy was mediated through the enhanced activation of AMPK and ROS generation in addition to the improved inhibition of cell migration, induction of cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis in cancer cells. CONCLUSION The current work underscores the importance of metformin as an ERMA in tackling breast cancer and as a novel approach to boost its anticancer activity via a synergistic combination with tangeretin.
