Elastohydrodynamic friction of robotic and human fingers on soft micropatterned substrates

Versatile Pickering emulsion gel lubricants stabilized by cooperative interfacial graphene oxide-polymer assemblies

Although a large number of water- and oil-based gel lubricants have found extensive potential applications in industrial and biomedical fields, developing new-type emulsion-based gel lubricants that may effectively integrate their characteristics and preponderances remains a significant challenge. Here a water-in-oil Pickering emulsion gel lubricant that is able to combine the high colloidal stability of traditional Pickering emulsions, the good swelling and corrosion resistance of oil-based gel lubricants, and the high cooling capacity of water-based gel lubricants prepared from a binary mixture of aqueous graphene oxide (GO) dispersion and diamino-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane oil solution in a broad concentration, pH, and water volume fraction range is reported. It can provide favourable lubrication for the Si3N4/steel and Si3N4/silicone tribopairs either in air or under water owing to the formation of a sturdy adsorbed oil film and ball-bearing actions of the GO particles. It can also be printed into various colourful 2D and 3D geometries upon direct extrusion into water, thanks to its water-in-oil nature and inherent shear-thinning and thixotropic properties, which further shows good prospects in underwater operations and artificial biomimetic organs. Our study may provide new insights into the design and preparation of novel semi-solid materials for diverse industrial, engineering, and biomedical applications.

A dual-responsive microemulsion with macroscale superlubricity and largely switchable friction

Although stimuli-responsive microemulsions (MEMs) consisting of water, oil and surfactants have found extensive potential applications in industrial fields, a responsive MEM exhibiting either macroscale superlubricity or two friction states where its coefficient of friction (CoF) can be switched by more than one order of magnitude has not yet been reported. Moreover, although traditional liquid superlubricants can provide ultralow friction and wear, effective control over the friction between two contacting surfaces is crucial for both achieving accurate control of the operation of an instrument and fabricating smart devices. Here we create a thermo- and magneto-responsive MEM capable of providing superlubrication for metallic materials in a broad temperature range from -30 to 20 °C using n-hexane, water, surfactant DDACe ((C12H25)2N+(CH3)2[CeCl4]-) and ethylene glycol. The MEM can abruptly and dramatically switch its CoF by approximately 25 fold based on a thermally reversible MEM-emulsion (EM) transition. Its anti-freezing performance allows it to provide effective lubrication even when the surrounding temperature attains as low as -60 °C. Together with its facile preparation, ultrahigh colloidal stability and magnetically controlled migration, such a novel smart MEM is envisioned to find widespread applications in materials science.

Bioinspired and Multifunctional Tribological Materials for Sliding, Erosive, Machining, and Energy-Absorbing Conditions: A Review

Friction, wear, and the consequent energy dissipation pose significant challenges in systems with moving components, spanning various domains, including nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS) and bio-MEMS (microrobots), hip prostheses (biomaterials), offshore wind and hydro turbines, space vehicles, solar mirrors for photovoltaics, triboelectric generators, etc. Nature-inspired bionic surfaces offer valuable examples of effective texturing strategies, encompassing various geometric and topological approaches tailored to mitigate frictional effects and related functionalities in various scenarios. By employing biomimetic surface modifications, for example, roughness tailoring, multifunctionality of the system can be generated to efficiently reduce friction and wear, enhance load-bearing capacity, improve self-adaptiveness in different environments, improve chemical interactions, facilitate biological interactions, etc. However, the full potential of bioinspired texturing remains untapped due to the limited mechanistic understanding of functional aspects in tribological/biotribological settings. The current review extends to surface engineering and provides a comprehensive and critical assessment of bioinspired texturing that exhibits sustainable synergy between tribology and biology. The successful evolving examples from nature for surface/tribological solutions that can efficiently solve complex tribological problems in both dry and lubricated contact situations are comprehensively discussed. The review encompasses four major wear conditions: sliding, solid-particle erosion, machining or cutting, and impact (energy absorbing). Furthermore, it explores how topographies and their design parameters can provide tailored responses (multifunctionality) under specified tribological conditions. Additionally, an interdisciplinary perspective on the future potential of bioinspired materials and structures with enhanced wear resistance is presented.

Lift at low Reynolds number

Lift forces are widespread in hydrodynamics. These are typically observed for big and fast objects and are often associated with a combination of fluid inertia (i.e. large Reynolds numbers) and specific symmetry-breaking mechanisms. In contrast, the properties of viscosity-dominated (i.e. low Reynolds numbers) flows make it more difficult for such lift forces to emerge. However, the inclusion of boundary effects qualitatively changes this picture. Indeed, in the context of soft and biological matter, recent studies have revealed the emergence of novel lift forces generated by boundary softness, flow gradients and/or surface charges. The aim of the present review is to gather and analyse this corpus of literature, in order to identify and unify the questioning within the associated communities, and pave the way towards future research.

Out-of-contact peeling caused by elastohydrodynamic deformation during viscous adhesion

We report on viscous adhesion measurements conducted in sphere-plane geometry between a rigid sphere and soft surfaces submerged in silicone oils. Increasing the surface compliance leads to a decrease in the adhesive strength due to elastohydrodynamic deformation of the soft surface during debonding. The force-displacement and fluid film thickness-time data are compared to an elastohydrodynamic model that incorporates the force measuring spring and finds good agreement between the model and data. We calculate the pressure distribution in the fluid and find that, in contrast to debonding from rigid surfaces, the pressure drop is non-monotonic and includes the presence of stagnation points within the fluid film when a soft surface is present. In addition, viscous adhesion in the presence of a soft surface leads to a debonding process that occurs via a peeling front (located at a stagnation point), even in the absence of solid-solid contact. As a result of mass conservation, the elastohydrodynamic deformation of the soft surface during detachment leads to surfaces that come closer as the surfaces are separated. During detachment, there is a region with fluid drainage between the centerpoint and the stagnation point, while there is fluid infusion further out. Understanding and harnessing the coupling between lubrication pressure, elasticity, and surface interactions provides material design strategies for applications such as adhesives, coatings, microsensors, and biomaterials.

Rippling Colloidal Polyelectrolyte Complex for Customized Fingerprints with High Tactile Perception

Fingerprints possess wide applications in personal identification, tactile perception, access control, and anti-counterfeiting. However, latent fingerprints are usually left on touched surfaces, leading to the leakage of personal information. Furthermore, tactile perception greatly decreases when fingerprints are covered by gloves. Customized fingerprints are developed to solve these issues, but it is a challenge to develop fingerprints with various customized patterns using traditional techniques due to their requiring special templates, materials, or instruments. Inspired by ripples on the lake, blowing air is used to generate surface waves on a colloidal polyelectrolyte complex, leading to vertical stratification and the accumulation of particles near the top of the film layer. As water rapidly evaporates, the viscosity of these particles significantly increases and the wave is solidified, forming fingerprint patterns. These customized fingerprints integrate functions of grasping objects, personal identification without leaving latent fingerprints and tactile perception enhancement, which can be applied in information security, anti-counterfeiting, tactile sensors, and biological engineering.

Creasing in microscale, soft static friction

Utilizing colloidal probe, lateral force microscopy and simultaneous confocal microscopy, combined with finite element analysis, we investigate how a microparticle starts moving laterally on a soft, adhesive surface. We find that the surface can form a self-contacting crease at the leading front, which results from a buildup of compressive stress. Experimentally, creases are observed on substrates that exhibit either high or low adhesion when measured in the normal direction, motivating the use of simulations to consider the role of adhesion energy and interfacial strength. Our simulations illustrate that the interfacial strength plays a dominating role in the nucleation of a crease. After the crease forms, it progresses through the contact zone in a Schallamach wave-like fashion. Interestingly, our results suggest that this Schallamach wave-like motion is facilitated by free slip at the adhesive, self-contacting interface within the crease.

The transition from Elasto-Hydrodynamic to Mixed Regimes in Lubricated Friction of Soft Solid Surfaces

Lubricated contacts in soft materials are common in various engineering and natural settings, such as tires, haptic applications, contact lenses, and the fabrication of soft electronic devices. Two major regimes are elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL), in which solid surfaces are fully separated by a fluid film, and mixed lubrication (ML), in which there is partial solid-to-solid contact. The transition between these regimes governs the minimum sliding friction achievable and is thus very important. Generally, the transition from EHL to ML regimes is believed to occur when the thickness of the lubricant layer is comparable with the amplitude of surface roughness. Here, it is reported that in lubricated sliding experiments on smooth, soft, poly(dimethylsiloxane) substrates, the transition can occur when the thickness of the liquid layer is much larger than the height of the asperities. Direct visualization of the "contact" region shows that the transition corresponds to the formation of wave-like surface wrinkles at the leading contact edge and associated instabilities at the trailing contact edge, which are believed to trigger the transition to the mixed regime. These results change the understanding of what governs the important EHL-ML transition in the lubricated sliding of soft solids.

Temperature dependent model for the quasi-static stick-slip process on a soft substrate

The classical Prandtl-Tomlinson model is the most famous and efficient method to describe the stick-slip phenomenon and the resulting friction between a slider and a corrugated substrate. It is widely used in all studies of frictional physics and notably in nanotribology. However, it considers a rigid or undeformable substrate and therefore is hardly applicable for investigating the physics of soft matter and in particular biophysics. For this reason, we introduce here a modified model that is capable of taking into consideration a soft or deformable substrate. It is realized by a sequence of elastically bound quadratic energy wells, which represent the corrugated substrate. We study the quasi-static behavior of the system through the equilibrium statistical mechanics. We thus determine the static friction and the deformation of the substrate as a function of temperature and substrate stiffness. The results are of interest for the study of cell motion in biophysics and for haptic and tactile systems in microtechnology.

Smart Polymer Surfaces with Complex Wrinkled Patterns: Reversible, Non-Planar, Gradient, and Hierarchical Structures

This review summarizes the relevant developments in preparing wrinkled structures with variable characteristics. These include the formation of smart interfaces with reversible wrinkle formation, the construction of wrinkles in non-planar supports, or, more interestingly, the development of complex hierarchically structured wrinkled patterns. Smart wrinkled surfaces obtained using light-responsive, pH-responsive, temperature-responsive, and electromagnetic-responsive polymers are thoroughly described. These systems control the formation of wrinkles in particular surface positions and the reversible construction of planar-wrinkled surfaces. This know-how of non-planar substrates has been recently extended to other structures, thus forming wrinkled patterns on solid, hollow spheres, cylinders, and cylindrical tubes. Finally, this bibliographic analysis also presents some illustrative examples of the potential of wrinkle formation to create more complex patterns, including gradient structures and hierarchically multiscale-ordered wrinkles. The orientation and the wrinkle characteristics (amplitude and period) can also be modulated according to the requested application.

Study on the Relationship between Textile Microplastics Shedding and Fabric Structure

Microplastics refer to plastic fibers, particles or films less than 5 mm in diameter. Textile microplastics are an important form of microplastics, which can harm the ecological environment and human health. This paper studies the relationship between textile microplastic shedding and fabric structure to reduce microplastics pollution and reduce its impact on humans and the natural environment. Firstly, household washing is simulated by considering the main fabric type, the number of steel balls used in the washing, washing temperature, washing time and other influencing factors. An orthogonal test of the mixing level of the four factors is designed by selecting the fabric type, the number of steel balls used in washing, washing temperature and washing time, and the influencing factors is analyzed, and the best washing scheme is obtained. Then, under optimal washing conditions, the three factors and three levels of orthogonal test are designed to analyze the influence of fabric structure and external factors on the shedding of microplastics by changing the amounts of friction and insolation time. The results show that the microplastics released by knitted fabrics are significantly more under the same washing conditions than that of woven fabrics. Satin fabrics released the most microplastics and plain fabrics the least. In addition, among the external factors, the amount of friction significantly affects the production of microplastics.

Friction control of elastic materials on glass by means of textured surfaces

To investigate the friction behaviors of elastomer and polyacetal writing tips sliding on various textured glass surfaces, the influences of the pitch size and height of sub-millimeter to millimeter sized texture on friction were examined via reciprocating friction tests. The friction coefficients of each writing tip could be systematically varied by changing the pitch and height of the texture. These changes in friction were based on the relationship between the convex-concave shapes and the contact parts of the writing tip, and hence, influence the adhesive, abrasive, and deformation frictions. By inducing a surface texture with a pitch smaller than the contact area of the writing tip, the friction coefficient could be reduced effectively. By inducing a surface texture with a larger height, the friction coefficient of the elastomer could be increased due to deformation friction. These behaviors indicate the possibility of controlling the friction by changing the parameters such as the pitch and height of the textured glass surfaces.

Rotation-translation coupling of soft objects in lubricated contact

We study the coupling between rotation and translation of a submerged cylinder in lubricated contact with a soft elastic substrate. Using numerical solutions and asymptotic theory, we analyze the elastohydrodynamic problem over the entire range of substrate deformations relative to the thickness of the intervening fluid film. We find a strong coupling between the rotation and translation of the cylinder when the surface deformation of the substrate is comparable to the thickness of the lubricating fluid layer. In the limit of large deformations, we show that the bodies are in near-Hertzian contact and cylinder rolls without slip, reminiscent of dry frictional contact. When the surface deformation is small relative to the separation between the surfaces, the coupling persists but is weaker, and the rotation rate scales with the translation speed to the one-third power. We then show how the external application of a torque modifies these behaviors by generating different combinations of rotational and translational motions, including back-spinning and top-spinning states. We demonstrate that these behaviors are robust regardless of whether the elastic substrate is thick or thin relative to the length scales of the flow.

Precise Controlling of Friction and Adhesion on Reprogrammable Shape Memory Micropillars

Microstructured surfaces with stimuli-responsive performances have aroused great attention in recent years, but it still remains a significant challenge to endow surfaces with precisely controlled morphological changes in microstructures, so as to get the precise control of regional properties (e.g., friction, adhesion). Herein, a kind of carbonyl iron particle-doped shape memory polyurethane micropillar with precisely controllable morphological changes is realized, upon remote near-infrared light (NIR) irradiation. Owing to the reversible transition of micropillars between bent and upright states, the micro-structured surface exhibits precisely controllable low-to-high friction transitions, together with the changes of friction coefficient ranging from ∼0.8 to ∼1.2. Hence, the changes of the surface friction even within an extremely small area can be precisely targeted, under local NIR laser irradiation. Moreover, the water droplet adhesion force of the surface can be reversibly switched between ∼160 and ∼760 μN, demonstrating the application potential in precisely controllable wettability. These features indicate that the smart stimuli-responsive micropillar arrays would be amenable to a variety of applications that require remote, selective, and on-demand responses, such as a refreshable Braille display system, micro-particle motion control, lab-on-a-chip, and microfluidics.

Jamming Distance Dictates Colloidal Shear Thickening

We report experimental and computational observations of dynamic contact networks for colloidal suspensions undergoing shear thickening. The dense suspensions are comprised of sterically stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) colloids that are spherically symmetric and have varied surface roughness. Confocal rheometry and dissipative particle dynamics simulations show that the shear thickening strength β scales exponentially with the scaled deficit contact number and the scaled jamming distance. Rough colloids, which experience additional rotational constraints, require an average of 1.5-2 fewer particle contacts as compared to smooth colloids, in order to generate the same β. This is because the surface roughness enhances geometric friction in such a way that the rough colloids do not experience a large change in the free volume near the jamming point. The available free volume for colloids of different roughness is related to the deficiency from the maximum number of nearest neighbors at jamming under shear. Our results further suggest that the force per contact is different for particles with different morphologies.

Printable homocomposite hydrogels with synergistically reinforced molecular-colloidal networks

The design of hydrogels where multiple interpenetrating networks enable enhanced mechanical properties can broaden their field of application in biomedical materials, 3D printing, and soft robotics. We report a class of self-reinforced homocomposite hydrogels (HHGs) comprised of interpenetrating networks of multiscale hierarchy. A molecular alginate gel is reinforced by a colloidal network of hierarchically branched alginate soft dendritic colloids (SDCs). The reinforcement of the molecular gel with the nanofibrillar SDC network of the same biopolymer results in a remarkable increase of the HHG’s mechanical properties. The viscoelastic HHGs show >3× larger storage modulus and >4× larger Young’s modulus than either constitutive network at the same concentration. Such synergistically enforced colloidal-molecular HHGs open up numerous opportunities for formulation of biocompatible gels with robust structure-property relationships. Balance of the ratio of their precursors facilitates precise control of the yield stress and rate of self-reinforcement, enabling efficient extrusion 3D printing of HHGs.

Composites which are made up of a single polymer, and yet allow modulation of the mechanical properties of the matrix without stress concentration, are challenging to fabricate. Here, the authors design a selfreinforced homocomposite alginate hydrogel with enhanced mechanical properties incorporating soft dendritic alginate colloids in the matrix and demonstrate its application in extrusion printing.
