Trace removal of benzene vapour using double-walled metal-dipyrazolate frameworks

Targeted improvement of narrow micropores in porous carbon for enhancing trace benzene vapor removal: Revealing the adsorption mechanism via experimental and molecular simulation

Porous carbon materials are highly desirable for removing benzene due to their low energy for capture and regeneration. Research has demonstrated that narrow microporous volume is crucial for effective adsorption of benzene at ultra-low concentration. Unfortunately, achieving directional increase in the narrow microporous volume in porous carbon remains a challenge. Here, nitrogen-doped hydrothermal carbon was prepared using urea-assisted hydrothermal method, and then porous carbon (PUC800) was prepared by KOH activation. The resulting material had 180 % higher pore volume and 179 % higher surface area compared to non-nitrogen activation methods. Then, using mechanochemical (mechanical compaction and KOH activation) approach to produce PUC800-3T, which had a 30 % increase in pore volume and a 33 % increase in surface area compared to PUC800. PUC800-3T showed benzene adsorption capacity of 4.2 mmol g-1 at 1 Pa and 5.8 mmol g-1 at 5 Pa. Experimental and molecular simulation indicate that the benzene adsorption at 1 and 5 Pa is determined by pore volume of less than 0.8 and 0.9 nm, respectively. Density functional theory calculations provided insight into the CH⋯X (X = N/O) interactions drive benzene adsorption on the carbon framework. This work provides valuable theoretical and experimental support for designing, preparing, and applying adsorbents for trace removal of benzene vapor.

Halogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks (XOFs) Based on N⋅⋅⋅Br+⋅⋅⋅N Bonds: Robust Organic Networks Constructed by Fragile Bonds

Organic frameworks face a trade-off between the framework stability and the bond dynamics, which necessitates the development of innovative linkages that can generate stable frameworks without hindering efficient synthesis. Although iodine(I)-based halogen-bonded organic frameworks (XOFs) have been developed, constructing XOFs based on bromine(I) is desirable yet challenging due to the high sensitivity of bromine(I) species. In this work, we present the inaugural construction of stable bromine(I)-bridged two-dimensional (2D) halogen-bonded organic frameworks, XOF(Br)-TPy-BF4/OTf, based on sensitive [N⋅⋅⋅Br⋅⋅⋅N]+ halogen bonds. The formation of XOF(Br)-TPy-BF4/OTf was monitored by 1H NMR, XPS, IR, SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, SEAD. Their framework structures were established by the results from PXRD, theoretical simulations and SAXS. More importantly, XOF(Br) displayed excellent chemical and thermal stabilities. They exhibited stable two-dimensional framework structures in various organic solvents and aqueous media, even over a wide pH range (pH 3-12), while the corresponding model compounds BrPy2BF4/OTf decomposed quickly even in the presence of minimal water. Furthermore, the influence of the counterions were investigated by replacing BF4 with OTf, which improved the stability of XOF(Br). This characteristic enabled XOF(Br) to serve as an efficient oxidizing reagent in aqueous environments, in contrast with the sensitivity of BrPy2BF4/OTf, which performed well only in organic media. This study not only deepens our fundamental understanding of organic frameworks but also opens new avenues for the development and application of multifunctional XOFs.

Simultaneous capture of trace benzene and SO2 in a robust Ni(II)-pyrazolate framework

Benzene and SO2, coexisting as hazardous air pollutants in some cases, such as in coke oven emissions, have led to detrimental health and environmental effects. Physisorbents offer promise in capturing benzene and SO2, while their performance compromises at low concentration. Particularly, the simultaneous capture of trace benzene and SO2 under humid conditions is attractive but challenging. Here, we address this issue by constructing a robust pyrazolate metal-organic framework (MOF) sorbent featuring rich accessible Ni(II) sites with low affinity to water and good stability. This material achieves a high benzene uptake of 5.08 mmol g-1 at 10 Pa, surpassing previous benchmarks. More importantly, it exhibits an adsorption capacity of ~0.51 mmol g-1 for 10 ppm benzene and ~1.21 mmol g-1 for 250 ppm SO2 under 30% relative humidity. This work demonstrates that a pioneering MOF enables simultaneous capture of trace benzene and SO2, highlighting the potential of physisorbents for industrial effluent remediation, even in the presence of moisture.

Large-Scale Computational Screening-Aided Development of High-Performance Adsorbent for Simultaneous Capture of Aromatic Volatile Organic Compounds

The development of an efficient adsorbent for the simultaneous capture of large amounts of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX) is an important and challenging issue. Here, through a stepwise screening of 10,142 metal-organic framework (MOF) structures from the computation-ready, experimental (CoRE) MOF database, 65 MOFs are proposed as promising adsorbent candidates for BTEX capture by considering the structures with accessible pore sizes for BTEX adsorption, sufficient hydrophobicity, high benzene selectivity (>0.2), and large total BTEX uptake (>3 mmol/g). Among the top-performing MOFs in terms of the BTEXmatrix (total BTEX uptake × benzene selectivity), EGUELUY01 was synthesized, and it exhibited large uptakes (≈5 mmol/g) for all BTEX components at concentrations of 1200-1500 ppm, which are superior to the BTEX uptake of the benchmark adsorbent, activated carbon. Moreover, some structure-property relationships required for BTEX adsorbents are provided through the obtained large-scale simulation data and machine learning analysis. The determined relationships will be useful for the future development of efficient BTEX adsorbents.

Unlocking the potential: strategic synthesis of a previously predicted pyrazolate-based stable MOF with unique clusters and high catalytic activity

The metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from [Co4Pz8] clusters (Pz = pyrazolate) and 1,3,5-tris(pyrazolate-4-yl) benzene (BTP3-) ligands was structurally predicted many years ago, and expected to be a promising candidate for various applications owing to its unique clusters and highly open 3D framework structure. However, this MOF has not been experimentally prepared yet, despite extensive efforts were made. In this work, we present the successful construction of this MOF, hereinafter referred to as BUT-124(Co), by adopting a two-step synthesis strategy, involving the initial construction of a template framework (BUT-124(Cd)) followed by a post-synthetic metal metathesis process. The effects of various cobalt sources and solvents were systematically investigated, and an innovative stepwise metathesis strategy was employed to optimize the exchange rates and the porosity of the material. BUT-124(Co) demonstrates high catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), achieving a competitive performance with an overpotential of 393 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and also affords remarkable long-term stability during potentiostatic electrolysis in 1 M KOH solution, surpassing the durability of many benchmark catalysts. This work not only introduces a novel MOF material with promising properties but also exemplifies a strategic synthesis approach for pyrazolate-based MOFs, paving the way for advancements in diverse application fields.

Dual-functional metal-organic framework for chemisorption and colorimetric monitoring of cyanogen chloride

Given the growing concern over the deployment of toxic chemicals in warfare, the rapid and accurate removal and detection of cyanogen chloride (CK) as a blood agent has become increasingly critical. However, conventional physisorbents and chemisorbents used in military respirators are insufficient for the effective removal of CK. In this study, we demonstrate the chemisorption and sensing abilities of Co2(m-DOBDC) (m-DOBDC4- = 4,6-dioxo-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) for CK via electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) in humid environments. Unlike the chemisorption in triethylenediamine (TEDA) impregnated carbon materials, which generates by-products through hydrolysis, the electron-rich C5 sites in m-DOBDC4- ligands give rise to cyano substitution with CK. This leads to the formation of stable C-C bonds and chloride ions (Cl-) coordinating with open Co2+ sites. Such a mechanism prevents the generation of toxic by-products like cyanic acid and hydrochloric acid. Breakthrough experiments conducted in a packed-bed system conclusively demonstrated the superior CK removal capacity of Co2(m-DOBDC) (1662 min/g), compared to TEDA-impregnated activated carbon (323 min/g) under humid conditions. Considering that MOF-74 series, isostructural with Co2(m-DOBDC), barely adsorb CK under similar conditions, this finding marks a significant advancement in developing novel sorbents for CK removal. Moreover, this chemisorption not only exhibited rapid and highly efficient CK removal but also enabled colorimetric monitoring via the distinctive color change induced by the coordination of Cl- acting as σ donors. These findings facilitate the development of adsorption and sensing equipment to protect military personnel from toxic chemical threats.

Advances in Functionalized Biocomposites of Living Cells Combined with Metal-Organic Frameworks

Motivated by the remarkable innate characteristics of cells in living organisms, we have found that hybrid materials that combine bioorganisms with nanomaterials have significantly propelled advancements in industrial applications. However, the practical deployment of unmodified living entities is inherently limited due to their sensitivity to environmental fluctuations. To surmount these challenges, an efficacious strategy for the biomimetic mineralization of living organisms with nanomaterials has emerged, demonstrating extraordinary potential in biotechnology. Among them, innovative composites have been engineered by enveloping bioorganisms with a metal-organic framework (MOF) coating. This review systematically summarizes the latest developments in living cells/MOF-based composites, detailing the methodologies employed in structure fabrication and their diverse applications, such as bioentity preservation, sensing, catalysis, photoluminescence, and drug delivery. Moreover, the synergistic benefits arising from the individual compounds are elucidated. This review aspires to illuminate new prospects for fabricating living cells/MOF composites and concludes with a perspective on the prevailing challenges and impending opportunities for future research in this field.

Recovery of High-Purity SF6 from Humid SF6/N2 Mixture within a Co(II)-Pyrazolate Framework

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is extensively employed in the power industry. However, its emissions significantly contribute to the greenhouse effect. The direct recovery of high purity SF6 from industrial waste gases would benefit its sustainable use, yet this represents a considerable challenge. Herein, we report the enrichment of SF6 from SF6/N2 mixtures via adsorptive separation in a stable Co(II)-pyrazolate MOF BUT-53 (BUT: Beijing University of Technology), which features dynamic molecular traps. BUT-53 exhibits an excellent SF6 adsorption uptake of 2.82 mmol/g at 0.1 bar and 298 K, as well as an unprecedented SF6/N2 (10:90) selectivity of 2485. Besides, the remarkable SF6/N2 selectivity of BUT-53 enables recovery of high purity (>99.9%) SF6 from a low concentration (10%) mixture through a breakthrough experiment. The excellent SF6/N2 separation efficiency was also well maintained under humid conditions (RH = 90%) over multiple cycles. Molecular simulation, single-crystal diffraction, and adsorption kinetics studies elucidate the associated adsorption mechanism and water tolerance.

Evaluation of Open-Source Large Language Models for Metal-Organic Frameworks Research

Along with the development of machine learning, deep learning, and large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 (GPT: Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), artificial intelligence (AI) tools have been playing an increasingly important role in chemical and material research to facilitate the material screening and design. Despite the exciting progress of GPT-4 based AI research assistance, open-source LLMs have not gained much attention from the scientific community. This work primarily focused on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a subdomain of chemistry and evaluated six top-rated open-source LLMs with a comprehensive set of tasks including MOFs knowledge, basic chemistry knowledge, in-depth chemistry knowledge, knowledge extraction, database reading, predicting material property, experiment design, computational scripts generation, guiding experiment, data analysis, and paper polishing, which covers the basic units of MOFs research. In general, these LLMs were capable of most of the tasks. Especially, Llama2-7B and ChatGLM2-6B were found to perform particularly well with moderate computational resources. Additionally, the performance of different parameter versions of the same model was compared, which revealed the superior performance of higher parameter versions.

Supramolecular Entanglement in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Enables Flexible-Robust Porosity for Highly Efficient Purification of Natural Gas

The development of porous materials with flexible-robust characteristics shows some unique advantages to target high performance for gas separation, but remains a daunting challenge to achieve so far. Herein, we report a carboxyl-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (ZJU-HOF-8a) with flexible-robust porosity for efficient purification of natural gas. ZJU-HOF-8a features a four-fold interpenetrated structure with dia topology, wherein abundant supramolecular entanglements are formed between the adjacent subnetworks through weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This structural configuration could not only stabilize the whole framework to establish the permanent porosity, but also enable the framework to show some flexibility due to its weak intermolecular interactions (so-called flexible-robust framework). The flexible-robust porosity of ZJU-HOF-8a was exclusively confirmed by gas sorption isotherms and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, showing that the flexible pore pockets can be opened by C3H8 and n-C4H10 molecules rather by C2H6 and CH4. This leads to notably higher C3H8 and n-C4H10 uptakes with enhanced selectivities than C2H6 over CH4 under ambient conditions, affording one of the highest n-C4H10/CH4 selectivities. The gas-loaded single-crystal structures coupled with theoretical simulations reveal that the loading of n-C4H10 can induce an obvious framework expansion along with pore pocket opening to improve n-C4H10 uptake and selectivity, while not for C2H6 adsorption. This work suggests an effective strategy of designing flexible-robust HOFs for improving gas separation properties.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Anti-competitive adsorption of gaseous benzene on hydrophilic microporous carbon in humid conditions

The adsorption capture of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of practical importance for air quality management. Herein, unique anti-competitive adsorption behavior of benzene on a hydrophilic activated carbon (Procarb-900 (P900)) is evidenced in the presence of competing components (e.g., formaldehyde (FA) and/or moisture). Contrary to general expectations, the adsorption capacity of 10 Pa benzene (QB) onto P900 (30 mg) at the 99 % breakthrough level improves from 144.8 to 187 mg g-1 as the relative humidity (RH) increases from 0 to 25 %. Such pattern is maintained at 183.9 mg g-1 even at the relatively high RH of 50 %. Furthermore, QB exhibits a remarkable increase of 56.1 % (to 226.0 mg g-1) in the binary phase (100 ppm benzene plus 50 ppm FA) relative to its single phase (144.8 mg g-1). The kinetic studies confirm the occurrence of anti-competitive adsorption of benzene under humid conditions with the unusual decrease in rate constants at the elevated RHs (i.e., 25 and 50 %). The thermodynamic studies suggest the exothermic nature of benzene adsorption onto P900. The hydrophilicity of P900's outer surface promotes the preferential adsorption of polar FA and water vapor over non-polar benzene, which deforms the activated carbon texture and lowers the pore size distribution (PSD). The narrow PSD enhances benzene uptake in the complex systems due to the confinement effect. Overall, this study offers insights into the unique anti-competitive adsorption of non-polar VOCs (e.g., benzene) on hydrophilic microporous adsorbents in the presence of potential interferences such as polar water vapor and FA. These findings offer a guideline for the practical implementation of adsorption techniques for gaseous VOCs in humid conditions.

Organizing Photosensitive and Photothermal Single-Sites Uniformly in a Trimetallic Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Effective combination of the photosensitivity and photothermal property in photocatalyst is vital to achieve the maximum light utilization for superior photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, this work successfully organizes photosensitive Cd-NS single-sites and photothermal Ni-NS single-sites uniformly at a molecular level within a tailored trimetallic metal-organic framework. The optimized Ho6-Cd0.76Ni0.24-NS exhibits a superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 40.06 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible-light irradiation and an apparent quantum efficiency of 29.37% at 420 nm without using cocatalysts or photosensitizers. A systematical mechanism study reveals that the uniformly organized photosensitive and photothermal single-sites have synergistic effect, which form ultrashort pathways for efficient transport of photoinduced electrons, suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, hence promote the hydrogen evolution activity. This work provides a promising approach for organizing dual-functional single-sites uniformly in photocatalyst for high-performance photocatalytic activity.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Sensors for Benzene Vapor

Sensing of benzene vapor is a hot spot due to the volatile drastic carcinogen even at trace concentration. However, achieving convenient and rapid detection is still a challenge. As a sort of functional porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as detection sensors by adsorbing benzene vapor and converting it into other signals (fluorescence intensity/wavelength, chemiresistive, weight or color, etc.). Supramolecular interaction between benzene molecules and the host framework, aperture size/shape and structural flexibility are influential factors in the performance of MOF-based sensors. Therefore, enhancing the host-guest interactions between the host framework and benzene molecules, or regulating the diffusion rate of benzene molecules by changing the aperture size/shape and flexibility of the host framework to enhance the detection signal are effective strategies for constructing MOF-based sensors. This concept highlights several types of MOF-based sensors for the detection of benzene vapor.

Double-walled Al-based MOF with large microporous specific surface area for trace benzene adsorption

Double-walled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), synthesized using Zn and Co, are potential porous materials for trace benzene adsorption. Aluminum is with low-toxicity and abundance in nature, in comparison with Zn and Co. Therefore, a double-walled Al-based MOF, named as ZJU-520(Al), with large microporous specific surface area of 2235 m2 g-1, pore size distribution in the range of 9.26-12.99 Å and excellent chemical stability, was synthesized. ZJU-520(Al) is consisted by helical chain of AlO6 clusters and 4,6-Di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine ligands. Trace benzene adsorption of ZJU-520(Al) is up to 5.98 mmol g-1 at 298 K and P/P0 = 0.01. Adsorbed benzene molecules are trapped on two types of sites. One (site I) is near the AlO6 clusters, another (site II) is near the N atom of ligands, using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. ZJU-520(Al) can effectively separate trace benzene from mixed vapor flow of benzene and cyclohexane, due to the adsorption affinity of benzene higher than that of cyclohexane. Therefore, ZJU-520(Al) is a potential adsorbent for trace benzene adsorption and benzene/cyclohexane separation.

Dinuclear Copper Sulfate-Based Square Lattice Topology Network with High Alkyne Selectivity

Porous coordination networks (PCNs) sustained by inorganic anions that serve as linker ligands can offer high selectivity toward specific gases or vapors in gas mixtures. Such inorganic anions are best exemplified by electron-rich fluorinated anions, e.g., SiF62-, TiF62-, and NbOF52-, although sulfate anions have recently been highlighted as inexpensive and earth-friendly alternatives. Herein, we report the use of a rare copper sulfate dimer molecular building block to generate two square lattice, sql, coordination networks which can be prepared via solvent layering or slurrying, CuSO4(1,4-bib)1.5, 1, (1,4-bib = 1,4-bisimidazole benzene) and CuSO4(1,4-bin)1.5, 2, (1,4-bin = 1,4-bisimidazole naphthalene). Variable-temperature SCXRD and PXRD experiments revealed that both sql networks underwent reversible structural transformations due to linker rotations or internetwork displacements. Gas sorption studies conducted upon the narrow-pore phase of CuSO4(1,4-bin)1.5, 2np, found a high calculated 1:99 selectivity for C2H2 over C2H4 (33.01) and CO2 (15.18), as well as strong breakthrough performance. Across-the-board, C3H4 selectivity vs C3H6, CO2, and C3H8 was also observed. Sulfate-based PCNs, although still understudied, appear increasingly likely to offer utility in gas and vapor separations.

Interior and Exterior Surface Modification of Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Trace Benzene Removal

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly contributes to air pollution and poses a serious threat to human health. Benzene, one of the most toxic VOCs, is difficult for the human body to metabolize and is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen. The development of efficient adsorbents for removing trace amounts of benzene from ambient air is thus of great importance. In this work, we studied the benzene adsorption properties of four Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) through static volumetric and dynamic breakthrough experiments. Two previously reported Zr-MOFs, BUT-12 and STA-26, were prepared with a tritopic carboxylic acid ligand (H3L1) functionalized with three methyl groups, and STA-26 is a 2-fold interpenetrated network of BUT-12. Two new isoreticular Zr-MOFs, BUT-12-Et and STA-26-Et, were synthesized using a similar ligand, H3L2, where the methyl groups are replaced with ethyl groups. There are mesopores in BUT-12 and BUT-12-Et and micropores in STA-26 and STA-26-Et. The four Zr-MOFs all showed high stability in liquid water and acidic aqueous solutions. The microporous STA-26 and STA-26-Et showed much higher benzene uptakes than mesoporous BUT-12 and BUT-12-Et at room temperature under low pressures. Particularly, the benzene adsorption capacity of STA-26-Et was high up to 2.21 mmol/g at P/P0 = 0.001 (P0 = 12.78 kPa), higher than those of the other three Zr-MOFs and most reported solid adsorbents. Breakthrough experiments confirmed that STA-26-Et could effectively capture trace benzene (10 ppm) from dry air; however, its benzene capture capacity was reduced by 90% under humid conditions (RH = 50%). Coating of the crystals of STA-26-Et with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) increased the hydrophobicity of the exterior MOF surfaces, leading to a more than 2-fold improvement in its benzene capture capacity in the breakthrough experiment under humid condition. PDMS coating of STA-26-Et likely slowed down the water adsorption process, and thus, the adsorbent afforded more efficient capture of benzene. This work demonstrates that modifying both the interior and exterior surfaces of MOFs can effectively enhance their performance in capturing trace benzene from ambient air, even under humid conditions. This finding is meaningful for the development of new adsorbents for effective air purification applications.

Engineering Zinc-Organic Frameworks-Based Artificial Carbonic Anhydrase with Ultrafast Biomimetic Centers for Efficient Hydration Reactions

Constructing effective and robust biocatalysts with carbonic anhydrase (CA)-mimetic activities offers an alternative and promising pathway for diverse CO2-related catalytic applications. However, there is very limited success has been achieved in controllably synthesizing CA-mimetic biocatalysts. Here, inspired by the 3D coordination environments of CAs, this study reports on the design of an ultrafast ZnN3-OH2 center via tuning the 3D coordination structures and mesoporous defects in a zinc-dipyrazolate framework to serve as new, efficient, and robust CA-mimetic biocatalysts (CABs) to catalyze the hydration reactions. Owing to the structural advantages and high similarity with the active center of natural CAs, the double-walled CAB with mesoporous defects displays superior CA-like reaction kinetics in p-NPA hydrolysis (V0 = 445.16 nM s-1, Vmax = 3.83 µM s-1, turnover number: 5.97 × 10-3 s-1), which surpasses the by-far-reported metal-organic frameworks-based biocatalysts. This work offers essential guidance in tuning 3D coordination environments in artificial enzymes and proposes a new strategy to create high-performance CA-mimetic biocatalysts for broad applications, such as CO2 hydration/capture, CO2 sensing, and abundant hydrolytic reactions.

Non-CO2 greenhouse gas separation using advanced porous materials

Global warming has become a growing concern over decades, prompting numerous research endeavours to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, the major greenhouse gas (GHG). However, the contribution of other non-CO2 GHGs including methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), fluorocarbons, perfluorinated gases, etc. should not be overlooked, due to their high global warming potential and environmental hazards. In order to reduce the emission of non-CO2 GHGs, advanced separation technologies with high efficiency and low energy consumption such as adsorptive separation or membrane separation are highly desirable. Advanced porous materials (APMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), etc. have been developed to boost the adsorptive and membrane separation, due to their tunable pore structure and surface functionality. This review summarizes the progress of APM adsorbents and membranes for non-CO2 GHG separation. The material design and fabrication strategies, along with the molecular-level separation mechanisms are discussed. Besides, the state-of-the-art separation performance and challenges of various APM materials towards each type of non-CO2 GHG are analyzed, offering insightful guidance for future research. Moreover, practical industrial challenges and opportunities from the aspect of engineering are also discussed, to facilitate the industrial implementation of APMs for non-CO2 GHG separation.

Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): rational construction and carbon dioxide capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be a promising porous material due to their excellent porosity and chemical tailorability. However, due to the relatively weak strength of coordination bonds, the stability (e.g., water stability) of MOFs is usually poor, which severely inhibits their practical applications. To prepare water-stable MOFs, several important strategies such as increasing the bonding strength of building units and introducing hydrophobic units have been proposed, and many MOFs with excellent water stability have been prepared. Carbon dioxide not only causes a range of climate and health problems but also is a by-product of some important chemicals (e.g., natural gas). Due to their excellent adsorption performances, MOFs are considered as a promising adsorbent that can capture carbon dioxide efficiently and energetically, and many water-stable MOFs have been used to capture carbon dioxide in various scenarios, including flue gas decarbonization, direct air capture, and purified crude natural gas. In this review, we first introduce the design and synthesis of water-stable MOFs and then describe their applications in carbon dioxide capture, and finally provide some personal comments on the challenges facing these areas.

A molecular sieve with ultrafast adsorption kinetics for propylene separation

The design of molecular sieves is vital for gas separation, but it suffers from a long-standing issue of slow adsorption kinetics due to the intrinsic contradiction between molecular sieving and diffusion within restricted nanopores. We report a molecular sieve ZU-609 with local sieving channels that feature molecular sieving gates and rapid diffusion channels. The precise cross-sectional cutoff of molecular sieving gates enables the exclusion of propane from propylene. The coexisting large channels constituted by sulfonic anions and helically arranged metal-organic architectures allow the fast adsorption kinetics of propylene, and the measured propylene diffusion coefficient in ZU-609 is one to two orders of magnitude higher than previous molecular sieves. Propylene with 99.9% purity is obtained through breakthrough experiments with a productivity of 32.2 L kg-1.

Flattening of a Bent Sulfonated MOF Linker: Impact on Structures, Flexibility, Gas Adsorption, CO2/N2 Selectivity, and Proton Conduction

Rational design of organic building blocks provides opportunities to control and tune various physicochemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including gas handling, proton conduction, and structural flexibility, the latter of which is responsible for new adsorption phenomena and often superior properties compared to rigid porous materials. In this work, we report synthesis, crystal structures, gas adsorption, and proton conduction for a flexible two-dimensional cadmium-based MOF (JUK-13-SO3H-SO2) containing a new sulfonated 4,4'-oxybis(benzoate) linker with a blocking SO2 bridge. This two-dimensional (2D) MOF is compared in detail with a previously reported three-dimensional Cd-MOF (JUK-13-SO3H), based on analogous, but nonflat, SO2-free sulfonated dicarboxylate. The comprehensive structure-property relationships and the detailed comparisons with insights into the networks flexibility are supported by five guest-dependent structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), and corroborated by spectroscopy (IR, 1H NMR), powder XRD, and elemental/thermogravimetric analyses, as well as by volumetric adsorption measurements (for N2, CO2, H2O), ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST), density-functional theory (DFT+D) quantum chemical and grand-canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) calculations, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies. Whereas both dynamic MOFs show moderate proton conductivity values, they exhibit excellent CO2/N2 selectivity related to the capture of CO2 from flue gases (IAST coefficients for 15:85 mixtures are equal to ca. 250 at 1 bar and 298 K). The presence of terminal sulfonate groups in both MOFs, introduced using a unique prechlorosulfonation strategy, is responsible for their hydrophilicity and water-assisted proton transport ability. The dynamic nature of the MOFs results in the appearance of breathing-type adsorption isotherms that exhibit large hysteresis loops (for CO2 and H2O) attributed to strong host-guest interactions. Theoretical modeling provides information about the adsorption mechanism and supports interpretation of experimental CO2 adsorption isotherms.

Important role of pore-filling mechanism in separating naproxen from water by micro-mesoporous carbonaceous material

Commercial micro-mesoporous carbonaceous material (MCM; 56.8% mesopores) was applied for investigating the removal phenomenon of naproxen drug in aqueous solutions through batch adsorption experiments. Results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of MCM to naproxen was slightly affected by different pHeq (2.0-11) and ionic strength (0-1 M NaCl). Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanisms were evaluated at pH 7.0. Adsorption kinetics indicated the rate constants for adsorption (0.2 × 10-3  L/(mg × min) and desorption (0.076/min) and the adsorption equilibrium constant (2.6 × 10-3  L/mg). Adsorption isotherm showed that MCM exhibited a high-affinity adsorption capacity to naproxen (even at low concentrations) and its Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax ) was 252.7 mg/g at 25°C. Adsorption thermodynamics proved that the adsorption process was endothermic and physisorption (ΔH° = 9.66 kJ/mol). The analysis result of pore size distribution demonstrated that the internal pore structure of MCM was appropriate for adsorbing naproxen molecules. Pore-filing mechanism (pore diffusion phenomenon) was confirmed by a considerable decrease in BET-surface area (585 m2 /g) and total pore volume (0.417 cm3 /g) of MCM after adsorbing naproxen (~1000 mg/L and pH 7.0) at 5 min (341 and 0.256), 60 min (191 and 0.205), 120 min (183 and 0.193), 360 min (144 and 0.175), and 24 h (71.6 m2 /g and 0.123 cm3 /g, respectively). The pore diffusion occurred rapidly (even at the initial adsorption period of 5 min). The FTIR technique was applied to identify the existence of C-H···π and n-π interaction. π-π interaction (evaluated through ID /IG ratio and C=C band) played a minor contribution in adsorption mechanisms. The ID /IG ratio (determined by the Raman technique) of MCM before adsorption (1.195) was similar to that after adsorption (1.190), and the wavenumber (C=C band; its FTIR spectrum) slightly shifted from 1638 to 1634 cm-1 after adsorption. A decrease in the Qmax value of MCM from 249 to 217 (H2 O2 -oxidized MCM) or to 224 mg/g (HNO3 -oxidized MCM) confirmed the presence of π-π interaction. Electrostatic attraction was a minor contribution. MCM can serve as a promising material for removing naproxen from water environment through a pore-filling mechanism. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Pore-filling mechanism was proposed by comparing textural properties of MCM before and after adsorbing naproxen. C-H···π and n-π interactions were identified via FTIR technique. π-π interaction was observed by FTIR and Raman techniques. Oxidation of MCM with HNO3 or H2 O2 was a helpful method to explore π-π interaction. Electrostatic attraction was explained through studies: effects of pH and NaCl along with desorption.

Effect of Ligand Aromaticity on Cyclohexane and Benzene Sorption in IRMOFs: A Computational Study

A series of four isoreticular MOFs (IRMOF-1, -10, -14, and -16) were selected for a computational investigation of the effect of ligand aromaticity on the adsorption capacity of an aromatic VOC (benzene) compared to its nonaromatic analog (cyclohexane). The affinity of the adsorbates was evaluated by calculating Henry's constants and adsorption enthalpies. It has been evidenced that while KH values decrease with ligand elongation (IRMOF-10 and -16), inserting a pyrene core into the MOF structure (IRMOF-14) increases both the cyclohexane and benzene adsorption efficiency by ∼290 and 54%, respectively. To elucidate host-guest interactions, we sought to locate preferential adsorption sites in MOF structures for the two VOCs studied by using the GCMC method. It appears that benzene interacts with the metal center (Zn4O clusters) and most of the ligand while cyclohexane tends to localize preferentially only near the Zn4O clusters. Coadsorption isotherms (equimolar mixture of benzene and cyclohexane) demonstrated the preferential adsorption of cyclohexane due to the stronger affinity for the MOF structure. On the other hand, for other isoreticular structures, the ligand elongation leads to a shift of the adsorption curve of cyclohexane caused by pore size increase and therefore less interactions with the walls. This phenomenon is counterbalanced in the case of IRMOF-14 due to stronger interactions between the cyclohexane and pyrene groups. The present results thus open perspectives in the design of promising MOF candidates for high-performing separation and sorption/detection of hydrocarbon VOCs.

Modular Customization and Regulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Membrane Separations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered ideal membrane candidates for energy-efficient separations. However, the MOF membrane amount to date is only a drop in the bucket compared to the material collections. The fabrication of an arbitrary MOF membrane exhibiting inherent separation capacity of the material remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report a MOF modular customization strategy by employing four MOFs with diverse structures and physicochemical properties and achieving innovative defect-free membranes for efficient separation validation. Each membrane fully displays the separation potential according to the MOF pore/channel microenvironment, and consequently, an intriguing H2 /CO2 separation performance sequence is achieved (separation factor of 1656-5.4, H2 permeance of 964-2745 gas permeation unit). Taking advantage of this strategy, separation performance can be manipulated by a non-destructive modification separately towards the MOF module. This work establishes a universal full-chain demonstration for membrane fabrication-separation validation-microstructure modification and opens an avenue for exclusive customization of membranes for important separations.

Fluorine-Boosted Kinetic and Selective Molecular Sieving of C6 Derivatives

Porous molecular sorbents have excellent selectivity towards hydrocarbon separation with energy saving techniques. However, to realize commercialization, molecular sieving processes should be faster and more efficient compared to extended frameworks. In this work, we show that utilizing fluorine to improve the hydrophobic profile of leaning pillararenes affords a substantial kinetic selective adsorption of benzene over cyclohexane (20 : 1 for benzene). The crystal structure shows a porous macrocycle that acts as a perfect match for benzene in both the intrinsic and extrinsic cavities with strong interactions in the solid state. The fluorinated leaning pillararene surpasses all reported organic molecular sieves and is comparable to the extended metal-organic frameworks that were previously employed for this separation such as UIO-66. Most importantly, this sieving system outperformed the well-known zeolitic imidazolate frameworks under low pressure, which opens the door to new generations of molecular sieves that can compete with extended frameworks for more sustainable hydrocarbon separation.

Optimizing Sieving Effect for CO2 Capture from Humid Air Using an Adaptive Ultramicroporous Framework

Excessive CO2 in the air can not only lead to serious climate problems but also cause serious damage to humans in confined spaces. Here, a novel metal-organic framework (FJI-H38) with adaptive ultramicropores and multiple active sites is prepared. It can sieve CO2 from air with the very high adsorption capacity/selectivity but the lowest adsorption enthalpy among the reported physical adsorbents. Such excellent adsorption performances can be retained even at high humidity. Mechanistic studies show that the polar ultramicropore is very suitable for molecular sieving of CO2 from N2 , and the distinguishable adsorption sites for H2 O and CO2 enable them to be co-adsorbed. Notably, the adsorbed-CO2 -driven pore shrinkage can further promote CO2 capture while the adsorbed-H2 O-induced phase transitions in turn inhibit H2 O adsorption. Moreover, FJI-H38 has excellent stability and recyclability and can be synthesized on a large scale, making it a practical trace CO2 adsorbent. This will provide a new strategy for developing practical adsorbents for CO2 capture from the air.

Construction of Negative Electrostatic Pore Environments in a Scalable, Stable and Low-Cost Metal-organic Framework for One-Step Ethylene Purification from Ternary Mixtures

One-step separation of C2 H4 from ternary C2 mixtures by physisorbents remains a challenge to combine excellent separation performance with high stability, low cost, and easy scalability for industrial applications. Herein, we report a strategy of constructing negative electrostatic pore environments in a stable, low-cost, and easily scaled-up aluminum MOF (MOF-303) for efficient one-step C2 H2 /C2 H6 /C2 H4 separation. This material exhibits not only record high C2 H2 and C2 H6 uptakes, but also top-tier C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 selectivities at ambient conditions. Theoretical calculations combined with in situ infrared spectroscopy indicate that multiple N/O sites on pore channels can build a negative electro-environment to provide stronger interactions with C2 H2 and C2 H6 over C2 H4 . Breakthrough experiments confirm its exceptional separation performance for ternary mixtures, affording one of the highest C2 H4 productivity of 1.35 mmol g-1 . This material is highly stable and can be easily synthesized at kilogram-scale from cheap raw materials using a water-based green synthesis. The benchmark combination of excellent separation properties with high stability and low cost in scalable MOF-303 has unlocked its great potential in this challenging industrial separation.

Consecutive Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Isomerization of Novel Octamolybdate Anions within a Microporous Hybrid Framework with Robust Water Sorption Properties

The 3D hybrid framework [{Cu(cyclam)}3 (κ-Mo8 O27 )] ⋅ 14H2 O (1) (cyclam=1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) undergoes sequential single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations upon heating to afford two different anhydrous phases (2 a and 3 a). These transitions modify the framework dimensionality and enable the isomerization of κ-octamolybdate (κ-Mo8 ) anions into λ (2 a) and μ (3 a) forms through metal migration. Hydration of 3 a involves condensation of one water molecule to the cluster to afford the γ-Mo8 isomer in 4, which dehydrates back into 3 a through the 6 a intermediate. In contrast, 2 a reversibly hydrates to form 5, exhibiting the same Mo8 cluster as that of 1. It is remarkable that three of the Mo8 clusters (κ, λ and μ) are new and that up to three different microporous phases can be isolated from 1 (2 a, 3 a, and 6 a). Water vapor sorption analyses show high recyclability and the highest uptake values for POM-based systems. The isotherms display an abrupt step at low humidity level desirable for humidity control devices or water harvesting in drylands.

Incorporation of multiple supramolecular binding sites into a robust MOF for benchmark one-step ethylene purification

One-step adsorption separation of C2H4 from ternary C2 hydrocarbon mixtures remains an important and challenging goal for petrochemical industry. Current physisorbents either suffer from unsatisfied separation performance, poor stability, or are difficult to scale up. Herein, we report a strategy of constructing multiple supramolecular binding sites in a robust and scalable MOF (Al-PyDC) for highly efficient one-step C2H4 purification from ternary mixtures. Owing to suitable pore confinement with multiple supramolecular binding sites, Al-PyDC exhibits one of the highest C2H2 and C2H6 uptakes and selectivities over C2H4 at ambient conditions. The gas binding sites have been visualized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, unveiling that the low-polarity pore surfaces with abundant electronegative N/O sites provide stronger multiple supramolecular interactions with C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4. Breakthrough experiments showed that polymer-grade C2H4 can be separated from ternary mixtures with a maximum productivity of 1.61 mmol g-1. This material can be prepared from two simple reagents using a green synthesis method with water as the sole solvent, and its synthesis can be easily scaled to multikilogram batches. Al-PyDC achieves an effective combination of benchmark separation performance, high stability/recyclability, green synthesis and easy scalability to address major challenges for industrial one-step C2H4 purification.

Induced-Fit-Identification in a Rigid Metal-Organic Framework for ppm-Level CO2 Removal and Ultra-Pure CO Enrichment

Removing CO2 from crude syngas via physical adsorption is an effective method to yield eligible syngas. However, the bottleneck in trapping ppm-level CO2 and improving CO purity at higher working temperatures are major challenges. Here we report a thermoresponsive metal-organic framework (1 a-apz), assembled by rigid Mg2 (dobdc) (1 a) and aminopyrazine (apz), which not only affords an ultra-high CO2 capacity (145.0/197.6 cm3  g-1 (0.01/0.1 bar) at 298 K) but also produces ultra-pure CO (purity ≥99.99 %) at a practical ambient temperature (TA ). Several characterization results, including variable-temperature tests, in situ high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HR-SXRD), and simulations, explicitly unravel that the excellent property is attributed to the induced-fit-identification in 1 a-apz that comprises self-adaption of apz, multiple binding sites, and complementary electrostatic potential (ESP). Breakthrough tests suggest that 1 a-apz can remove CO2 from 1/99 CO2 /CO mixtures at practical 348 K, yielding 70.5 L kg-1 of CO with ultra-high purity of ≥99.99 %. The excellent separation performance is also revealed by separating crude syngas that contains quinary mixtures of H2 /N2 /CH4 /CO/CO2 (46/18.3/2.4/32.3/1, v/v/v/v/v).

Reversible and Turn-On Fluorescence Detection of Phosphate in Aqueous Solution and Living Cell Imaging by Supramolecular Metallacycles with AIE-Active Ligands

Luminescent supramolecular metallacycles have attracted great interest as a new promising class of sensing substrates. In this work, two tetraphenylethene (TPE)-based diimidazole and dipyrazole ligands with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature were designed for the construction of supramolecular tetragonal metallacycles 1-4 with two 90° mononuclear [(bpy)M]2+ or dinuclear [(bpy)2M2]4+ acceptors (bpy = 2,2'-dipyridine; M = Pd, Pt), in which the fluorescence can be quenched to an "off" state due to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). Metallacycle 1 was utilized as a fluorescence sensor for phosphate (PO43-) detection in aqueous solution by means of disassembly, leading to the release of the ligand. Additionally, the metallacycle can be regenerated through self-assembly via the introduction of Pd(II) acceptors. PO43- was detected using TPE-based metallacycles over a wide concentration range, with a detection limit as low as 2.1 × 10-8 M. Furthermore, sensor 1 also presented the semiquantitative visual detection ability for PO43- in the test paper mode via fluorescence changes. The aforementioned studies not only enhance the current research on fluorescent materials but also offer a strategy for the creation of stimuli-responsive supramolecular coordination complexes.

Programmed fluorine binding engineering in anion-pillared metal-organic framework for record trace acetylene capture from ethylene

Porous physisorbents are attractive candidates for selective capture of trace gas or volatile compounds due to their low energy footprints. However, many physisorbents suffer from insufficient sorbate-sorbent interactions, resulting in low uptake or inadequate selectivity when gases are present at trace levels. Here, we report a strategy of programmed fluorine binding engineering in anion-pillared metal-organic frameworks to maximize C2H2 binding affinity for benchmark trace C2H2 capture from C2H4. A robust material (ZJU-300a) was elaborately designed to provide multiple-site fluorine binding model, resulting in an ultrastrong C2H2 binding affinity. ZJU-300a exhibits a record-high C2H2 uptake of 3.23 millimoles per gram (at 0.01 bar and 296 kelvin) and one of the highest C2H2/C2H4 selectivity (1672). The adsorption binding of C2H2 and C2H4 was visualized by gas-loaded ZJU-300a structures. The separation capacity was confirmed by breakthrough experiments for 1/99 C2H2/C2H4 mixtures, affording the maximal dynamic selectivity (264) and C2H4 productivity of 436.7 millimoles per gram.

Functional materials contributing to the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater: Classification and intrinsic chemical-biological removal mechanisms

Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs) are the main contaminants in soil and groundwater and have posed great challenge on the remediation of soil and ground water. Different remediation materials have been developed to deal with the environmental problems caused by CHs. Remediation materials can be classified into three main categories according to the corresponding technologies: adsorption materials, chemical reduction materials and bioaugmentation materials. In this paper, the classification and preparation of the three materials are briefly described in terms of synthesis and properties according to the different types. Then, a detailed review of the remediation mechanisms and applications of the different materials in soil and groundwater remediation is presented in relation to the various properties of the materials and the different challenges encountered in laboratory research or in the environmental application. The removal trends in different environments were found to be largely similar, which means that composite materials tend to be more effective in removing CHs in actual remediation. For instance, adsorbents were found to be effective when combined with other materials, due to the ability to take advantage of the respective strengths of both materials. The rapid removal of CHs while minimizing the impact of CHs on another material and the material itself on the environment. Finally, suggestions for the next research directions are given in conjunction with this paper.

Temperature-dependent rearrangement of gas molecules in ultramicroporous materials for tunable adsorption of CO2 and C2H2

The interactions between adsorbed gas molecules within porous metal-organic frameworks are crucial to gas selectivity but remain poorly explored. Here, we report the modulation of packing geometries of CO₂ and C₂H₂ clusters within the ultramicroporous CUK-1 material as a function of temperature. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals a unique temperature-dependent reversal of CO₂ and C₂H₂ adsorption affinities on CUK-1, which is validated by gas sorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments, affording high-purity C₂H₂ (99.95%) from the equimolar mixture of C₂H₂/CO₂ via a one-step purification process. At low temperatures (<253 K), CUK-1 preferentially adsorbs CO₂ with both high selectivity (>10) and capacity (170 cm³ g^-1) owing to the formation of CO₂ tetramers that simultaneously maximize the guest-guest and host-guest interactions. At room temperature, conventionally selective adsorption of C₂H₂ is observed. The selectivity reversal, structural robustness, and facile regeneration of CUK-1 suggest its potential for producing high-purity C₂H₂ by temperature-swing sorption.

Interfacial engineered superelastic metal-organic framework aerogels with van-der-Waals barrier channels for nerve agents decomposition

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) significantly threaten human peace and global security. Most personal protective equipment (PPE) deployed to prevent exposure to CWAs is generally devoid of self-detoxifying activity. Here we report the spatial rearrangement of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into superelastic lamellar-structured aerogels based on a ceramic network-assisted interfacial engineering protocol. The optimized aerogels exhibit efficient adsorption and decomposition performance against CWAs either in liquid or aerosol forms (half-life of 5.29 min, dynamic breakthrough extent of 400 L g^-1) due to the preserved MOF structure, van-der-Waals barrier channels, minimized diffusion resistance (~41% reduction), and stability over a thousand compressions. The successful construction of the attractive materials offers fascinating perspectives on the development of field-deployable, real-time detoxifying, and structurally adaptable PPE that could be served as outdoor emergency life-saving devices against CWAs threats. This work also provides a guiding toolbox for incorporating other critical adsorbents into the accessible 3D matrix with enhanced gas transport properties.

A customized MOF-polymer composite for rapid gold extraction from water matrices

With the fast-growing accumulation of electronic waste and rising demand for rare metals, it is compelling to develop technologies that can promotionally recover targeted metals, like gold, from waste, a process referred to as urban mining. Thus, there is increasing interest in the design of materials to achieve rapid, selective gold capture while maintaining high adsorption capacity, especially in complex aqueous-based matrices. Here, a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite, BUT-33-poly(para-phenylenediamine) (PpPD), is assessed for gold extraction from several matrices including river water, seawater, and leaching solutions from CPUs. BUT-33-PpPD exhibits a record-breaking extraction rate, with high Au³⁺ removal efficiency (>99%) within seconds (less than 45 s), a competitive capacity (1600 mg/g), high selectivity, long-term stability, and recycling ability. Furthermore, the high porosity and redox adsorption mechanism were shown to be underlying reasons for the material's excellent performance. Given the accumulation of recovered metallic gold nanoparticles inside, the material was also efficiently applied as a catalyst.

Direct Separation of UO2 2+ by Coordination Sieve Effect via Spherical Coordination Traps

Molecule sieve effect (MSE) can enable direct separation of target, thus overcoming two major scientific and industrial separation problems in traditional separation, coadsorption, and desorption. Inspired by this, herein, the concept of coordination sieve effect (CSE) for direct separation of UO₂ ²⁺ , different from the previously established two-step separation method, adsorption plus desorption is reported. The used adsorbent, polyhedron-based hydrogen-bond framework (P-HOF-1), made from a metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor through a two-step postmodification approach, afforded high uptake capacity (close to theoretical value) towards monovalent Cs⁺ , divalent Sr²⁺ , trivalent Eu³⁺ , and tetravalent Th⁴⁺ ions, but completely excluded UO₂ ²⁺ ion, suggesting excellent CSE. Direct separation of UO₂ ²⁺ can be achieved from a mixed solution containing Cs⁺ , Sr²⁺ , Eu³⁺ , Th⁴⁺ , and UO₂ ²⁺ ions, giving >99.9% removal efficiency for Cs⁺ , Sr²⁺ , Eu³⁺ , and Th⁴⁺ ions, but <1.2% removal efficiency for UO₂ ²⁺ , affording benchmark reverse selectivity (S_M/U ) of >83 and direct generation of high purity UO₂ ²⁺ (>99.9%). The mechanism for such direct separation via CSE, as unveiled by both single crystal X-ray diffraction and density-functional theory (DFT) calculation, is due to the spherical coordination trap in P-HOF-1 that can exactly accommodate the spherical coordination ions of Cs⁺ , Sr²⁺ , Eu³⁺ , and Th⁴⁺ , but excludes the planar coordination UO₂ ²⁺ ion.

Scalable Green Synthesis of Robust Ultra-Microporous Hofmann Clathrate Material with Record C3 H6 Storage Density for Efficient C3 H6 /C3 H8 Separation

Developing porous materials for C₃ H₆ /C₃ H₈ separation faces the challenge of merging excellent separation performance with high stability and easy scalability of synthesis. Herein, we report a robust Hofmann clathrate material (ZJU-75a), featuring high-density strong binding sites to achieve all the above requirements. ZJU-75a adsorbs large amount of C₃ H₆ with a record high storage density of 0.818 g mL^-1 , and concurrently shows high C₃ H₆ /C₃ H₈ selectivity (54.2) at 296 K and 1 bar. Single-crystal structure analysis unveil that the high-density binding sites in ZJU-75a not only provide much stronger interactions with C₃ H₆ but also enable the dense packing of C₃ H₆ . Breakthrough experiments on gas mixtures afford both high separation factor of 14.7 and large C₃ H₆ uptake (2.79 mmol g^-1 ). This material is highly stable and can be easily produced at kilogram-scale using a green synthesis method, making it as a benchmark material to address major challenges for industrial C₃ H₆ /C₃ H₈ separation.

A Novel Aluminum-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Uniform Micropores for Trace BTEX Adsorption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential porous adsorbents for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX). A novel MOF, using low toxic aluminum (Al) as the metal, named as ZJU-620(Al), with uniform micropore size of 8.37±0.73 Å and specific surface area of 1347 m²  g^-1 , was synthesized. It is constructed by one-dimensional rod-shaped AlO₆ clusters, formate ligands and 4,4',4''-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl) tribenzoic ligands. ZJU-620(Al) exhibits excellent chemical-thermal stability and adsorption for trace BTEX, e.g., benzene adsorption of 3.80 mmol g^-1 at P/P₀ =0.01 and 298 K, which is the largest one reported. Using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations and Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, it was observed that the excellent adsorption could be attributed to the high affinity of BTEX molecules in ZJU-620(Al) micropores because the kinetic diameters of BTEX are close up to the pore size of ZJU-620(Al).

Programmed Polarizability Engineering in a Cyclen-Based Cubic Zr(IV) Metal-Organic Framework to Boost Xe/Kr Separation

Efficient separation of xenon (Xe) and krypton (Kr) mixtures through vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) is considered the most attractive route to reduce energy consumption, but discriminating between these two gases is difficult due to their similar properties. In this work, we report a cubic zirconium-based MOF (Zr-MOF) platform, denoted as NU-1107, capable of achieving selective separation of Xe/Kr by post-synthetically engineering framework polarizability in a programmable manner. Specifically, the tetratopic linkers in NU-1107 feature tetradentate cyclen cores that are capable of chelating a variety of transition-metal ions, affording a sequence of metal-docked cationic isostructural Zr-MOFs. NU-1107-Ag(I), which features the strongest framework polarizability among this series, achieves the best performance for a 20:80 v/v Xe/Kr mixture at 298 K and 1.0 bar with an ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) predicted selectivity of 13.4, placing it among the highest performing MOF materials reported to date. Notably, the Xe/Kr separation performance for NU-1107-Ag(I) is significantly better than that of the isoreticular, porphyrin-based MOF-525-Ag(II), highlighting how the cyclen core can generate relatively stronger framework polarizability through the formation of low-valent Ag(I) species and polarizable counteranions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate these experimental results and suggest strong interactions between Xe and exposed Ag(I) sites in NU-1107-Ag(I). Finally, we validated this framework polarizability regulation approach by demonstrating the effectiveness of NU-1107-Ag(I) toward C₃H₆/C₃H₈ separation, indicating that this generalizable strategy can facilitate the bespoke synthesis of polarized porous materials for targeted separations.

In Operando Spectroscopic Ellipsometry Investigation of MOF Thin Films for the Selective Capture of Acetic Acid

The emission of polar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a major worldwide concern of air quality and equally impacts the preservation of cultural heritage (CH). The challenge is to design highly efficient adsorbents able to selectively capture traces of VOCs such as acetic acid (AA) in the presence of relative humidity (RH) normally found at storage in museums (40-80%). Although the selective capture of VOCs over water is still challenging, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess highly tunable features (Lewis, Bronsted, or redox metal sites, functional groups, hydrophobicity, etc.) suitable to selectively capture a large variety of VOCs. In this context, we have explored the adsorption efficiency of a series of MOFs thin films (ZIF-8(Zn), MIL-101(Cr), and UiO-66(Zr)-2CF₃) for the selective capture of AA based on a UV/vis and FT-IR spectroscopic ellipsometry in operando study (2-6% of relative pressure of AA under 40% of RH), namely conditions close to the realistic environmental storage conditions of cultural artifacts. For that purpose, optical quality thin films of MOFs were prepared by dip-coating, and their AA adsorption capacity and selectivity were evaluated under humid conditions by measuring the variation of the refractive index as a function of the vapor pressures while the chemical nature of the coadsorbed analytes (water and AA) was identified by FT-IR ellipsometry. While thin films of ZIF-8(Zn) strongly degraded upon exposure to AA/water vapors, films of MIL-101(Cr) and UiO-66(Zr)-2CF₃ present a high chemical stability under those conditions. It was shown that MIL-101(Cr) presents a high AA adsorption capacity due to its high pore volume but exhibits a poor AA adsorption selectivity under humid conditions. In contrast, UiO-66(Zr)-2CF₃ was shown to overpass MIL-101(Cr) in terms of AA/H₂O adsorption selectivity and AA adsorption/desorption cycling stability because of its high hydrophobic character, suitable pore size for adequate confinement, and specific interactions.

Expanding the Structural Topologies of Rare-Earth Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks through Ligand Modulation

Expanding the structural diversity of porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (PMOFs) is essential to develop functional materials with novel properties or enhanced performance in different applications. Herein, we establish a strategy to construct rare-earth (RE) PMOFs with unprecedented topology via rational functionalization of porphyrinic ligands. By introducing phenyl/pyridyl groups to the meso-positions of the porphyrin core, the symmetries and connectivities of the ligands are tuned, and three RE-PMOFs (BUT-224/-225/-226) with new topologies are successfully obtained. In addition, BUT-225(Co), with both the Lewis basic and acidic sites, exhibits enhanced CO₂ uptake and higher catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of CO₂ and epoxides under mild conditions. This work reveals that the RE-PMOFs with novel topologies can be rationally designed and constructed through ligand functionalization, which provides insights into the construction of tailored PMOFs for various applications.

Structural Phase Transformations Induced by Guest Molecules in a Nickel-Based 2D Square Lattice Coordination Network

Herein, we report the crystal structure and guest binding properties of a new two-dimensional (2D) square lattice (sql) topology coordination network, sql-(azpy)(pdia)-Ni, which is comprised of two linker ligands with diazene (azo) moieties, (E)-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)diazene(azpy) and (E)-5-(phenyldiazenyl)isophthallate(pdia). sql-(azpy)(pdia)-Ni underwent guest-induced switching between a closed (nonporous) β phase and several open (porous) α phases, but unlike the clay-like layer expansion to distinct phases previously reported in switching sql networks, a continuum of phases was formed. In effect, sql-(azpy)(pdia)-Ni exhibited elastic-like properties induced by adaptive guest binding. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies of the α phases revealed that the structural transformations were enabled by the pendant phenyldiazenyl moiety on the pdia^2- ligand. This moiety functioned as a type of hinge to enable parallel slippage of layers and interlayer expansion for the following guests: N,N-dimethylformamide, water, dichloromethane, para-xylene, and ethylbenzene. The slippage angle (interplanar distances) ranged from 54.133° (4.442 Å) in the β phase to 69.497° (5.492 Å) in the ethylbenzene-included phase. Insight into the accompanying phase transformations was also gained from variable temperature powder XRD studies. Dynamic water vapor sorption studies revealed a stepped isotherm with little hysteresis that was reversible for at least 100 cycles. The isotherm step occurred at ca. 50% relative humidity (RH), the optimal RH value for humidity control.

Enhanced sorption in an indium-acetylenedicarboxylate metal-organic framework with unexpected chains of cis-μ-OH-connected {InO6} octahedra

Single crystals of the new metal-organic framework (MOF) In-adc (HHUD-4) were obtained through the reaction of linear acetylenedicarboxylic acid (H₂adc) with In(NO₃)₃·xH₂O as a racemic conglomerate in the chiral tetragonal space groups P4₃22 and P4₁22. Fundamentally different from other MOFs with linear linkers and trans-μ-OH-connected infinite {MO₆} secondary building units as in the MIL-53-type, the linear adc^2- linker leads to the formation of cis-μ-OH connected {InO₆} polyhedra, which have otherwise only been found before for V-shaped ligands, as in CAU-10-H. A far-reaching implication of this finding is the possibility that trans-μ-OH/straight MIL-53-type MOFs will have polymorphs of CAU-10-H cis-μ-OH/helical topology and vice versa. HHUD-4 is a microporous MOF with a BET surface area of up to 940 m² g^-1 and a micropore volume of up to 0.39 cm³ g^-1. Additionally, HHUD-4 features good adsorption uptakes of 3.77 mmol g^-1 for CO₂ and 1.25 mmol g^-1 for CH₄ at 273 K and 1 bar, respectively, and a high isosteric heat of adsorption of 11.4 kJ mol^-1 for H₂ with a maximum uptake of 6.36 mmol g^-1 at 77 K and 1 bar. Vapor sorption experiments for water and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, cyclohexane and n-hexane yielded uptake values of 135, 269, 116 and 205 mg g^-1, respectively, at 293 K. While HHUD-4 showed unremarkable results for water uptake and low stability for water, it exhibited good stability with steep VOC uptake steps at low relative pressures and a high selectivity of 17 for benzene/cyclohexane mixtures.

Guest-adaptive molecular sensing in a dynamic 3D covalent organic framework

Molecular recognition is an attractive approach to designing sensitive and selective sensors for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although organic macrocycles and cages have been well-developed for recognising organics by their adaptive pockets in liquids, porous solids for gas detection require a deliberate design balancing adaptability and robustness. Here we report a dynamic 3D covalent organic framework (dynaCOF) constructed from an environmentally sensitive fluorophore that can undergo concerted and adaptive structural transitions upon adsorption of gas and vapours. The COF is capable of rapid and reliable detection of various VOCs, even for non-polar hydrocarbon gas under humid conditions. The adaptive guest inclusion amplifies the host-guest interactions and facilitates the differentiation of organic vapours by their polarity and sizes/shapes, and the covalently linked 3D interwoven networks ensure the robustness and coherency of the materials. The present result paves the way for multiplex fluorescence sensing of various VOCs with molecular-specific responses.
