Hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne-assisted ultrafast sparking synthesis of metastable nanomaterials

Variations of silicon species, dissolution and crystallinity within sichars prepared under different heating rate

Silicon within Si-rich biochars (sichar) plays a crucial role in immobilizing heavy metals and providing slow-releasing bioavailable silicon for silicophilic plants. However, the impact of heating rate on the silicon properties and carbon‑silicon interactions in sichars remains unclear. In this study, rice husk was used as a silicon-rich biomass to prepare sichars at different heating rates (10, 30 and 60 °C per minute, and ultra-fast-pyrolysis), then experiments such as silicon concentration measurement, Raman and XRD characterization were conducted. The results showed that a faster heating rate reduced the carbon content during pyrolysis while promoted the formation of amorphous silica, resulting in a threefold increase in dissolved silicon in sichars prepared at 400 °C. Additionally, we observed the formation of a meta-stable SiO2 polymorph (tridymite) in rice husk-derived biochars under fast heating, differing from the previously observed quartz generated at slow heating rates. Regarding the CSi relationship, a faster heating rate facilitated the removal of the surface carbon layer, exposing the underlying silicon layer. This led to more soluble silicon species and less encapsulated silicon, resulting in a continuous release and cumulative silicon dissolution amount 1.2 times and 1.6-1.9 times higher, respectively, than those in slow heating rate-derived sichars. Consequently, this enhanced silicon uptake in rice seedlings. Our findings indicate that beyond pyrolysis temperature, the heating rate significantly affects the silicon species, silicon dissolution behavior, and carbon‑silicon relationships of biochar, ultimately determines the properties and applications of sichars.

Sulfonic Acid-Functionalized Graphdiyne for Effective Li-S Battery Separators

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries enable a promising high-energy-storage system while facing practical challenges regarding lithium dendrites and lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling. Herein, a fascinating SO3H-functionalized graphdiyne (SOGDY) was developed by grafting SO3H onto GDY to modify the separator in Li-S batteries. It realizes structure-retained material transformation, that is, SOGDY retains the crystalline all-carbon network and uniform subnanopores from the initial GDY. The abundant SO3H and uniform pores create a rapid Li+ transport relay station, benefit rapid Li+ transport and even lithium deposition, and prevent lithium dendrite growth. The spatial obstruction and strong polar adsorption sites from SO3H effectively inhibit LiPS shuttling. Additionally, SOGDY establishes a fast electron-transfer pathway to facilitate the LiPS conversion. The SOGDY/PP separator exhibited steady cycling at 1 mA cm-2 over 3500 h in the Li∥Li symmetric battery and achieved outstanding low-temperature and high-rate performance in the Li-S battery with a high initial specific capacity of 804.5 mA h g-1 and a final capacity of 504.9 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 3 C and -10 °C. This work demonstrates that introducing a stable all-carbon network and uniform functionalized nanopores is an effective strategy to modify the Li-S battery separator.

Growing highly ordered Pt and Mn bimetallic single atomic layers over graphdiyne

Controlling the precise growth of atoms is necessary to achieve manipulation of atomic composition and atomic position, regulation of electronic structure, and an understanding of reactions at the atomic level. Herein, we report a facile method for ordered anchoring of zero-valent platinum and manganese atoms with single-atom thickness on graphdiyne under mild conditions. Due to strong and incomplete charge transfer between graphdiyne and metal atoms, the formation of metal clusters and nanoparticles can be inhibited. The size, composition and structure of the bimetallic nanoplates are precisely controlled by the natural structure-limiting effect of graphdiyne. Experimental characterization clearly demonstrates such a fine control process. Electrochemical measurements show that the active site of platinum-manganese interface on graphdiyne guarantees the high catalytic activity and selectivity (~100%) for alkene-to-diol conversion. This work lays a solid foundation for obtaining high-performance nanomaterials by the atomic engineering of active site.

Confined Growth of Highly Ordered Metal Atomic Arrays for Seawater Oxidation

Metal atom catalysts have been among the most important research objects due to their specific physical and chemical properties. However, precise control of the anchoring of metal atoms is still challenging to achieve. Cobalt and iridium atomic arrays formed sequentially ordered stable arrays in graphdiyne (GDY) triangular cavities depending on their intrinsic chemical properties and interactions. The success of this method was attributed to multifunctional integration of GDY, enabling selective growth from one to several atoms and various atomic densities. The bimetallic atom arrays show several advantages resulting from reducibility of acetylene bonds, space limiting effect, incomplete charge transfer between GDY and metal atoms, and sp-C hybridized triple bond skeleton. This well-designed system exhibits unprecedented oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a mass activity of 2.6 A mgcat. -1 at a low overpotential of 300 mV, which is 216.6 times higher than the state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst, and long-term stability.

Flash-within-flash synthesis of gram-scale solid-state materials

Sustainable manufacturing that prioritizes energy efficiency, minimal water use, scalability and the ability to generate diverse materials is essential to advance inorganic materials production while maintaining environmental consciousness. However, current manufacturing practices are not yet equipped to fully meet these requirements. Here we describe a flash-within-flash Joule heating (FWF) technique-a non-equilibrium, ultrafast heat conduction method-to prepare ten transition metal dichalcogenides, three group XIV dichalcogenides and nine non-transition metal dichalcogenide materials, each in under 5 s while in ambient conditions. FWF achieves enormous advantages in facile gram scalability and in sustainable manufacturing criteria when compared with other synthesis methods. Also, FWF allows the production of phase-selective and single-crystalline bulk powders, a phenomenon rarely observed by any other synthesis method. Furthermore, FWF MoSe2 outperformed commercially available MoSe2 in tribology, showcasing the quality of FWF materials. The capability for atom substitution and doping further highlights the versatility of FWF as a general bulk inorganic materials synthesis protocol.

Laser Precise Synthesis of Oxidation-Free High-Entropy Alloy Nanoparticle Libraries

High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA-NPs) show exceptional properties and great potential as a new generation of functional materials, yet a universal and facile synthetic strategy in air toward nonoxidized and precisely controlled composition remains a huge challenge. Here we provide a laser scribing method to prepare single-phase solid solution HEA-NPs libraries in air with tunable composition at the atomic level, taking advantage of the laser-induced metastable thermodynamics and substrate-assisted confinement effect. The three-dimensional porous graphene substrate functions as a microreactor during the fast heating/cooling process, which is conductive to the generation of the pure alloy phase by effectively blocking the binding of oxygen and metals, but is also beneficial for realizing accurate composition control via microstructure confinement-endowed favorable vapor pressure. Furthermore, by combining an active learning approach based on an adaptive design strategy, we discover an optimal composition of quinary HEA-NP catalysts with an ultralow overpotential for Li-CO2 batteries. This method provides a simple, fast, and universal in-air route toward the controllable synthesis of HEA-NPs, potentially integrated with machine learning to accelerate the research on HEAs.

Controlled Growth Lateral/Vertical Heterostructure Interface for Lithium Storage

Artificial heterostructures with structural advancements and customizable electronic interfaces are fundamental for achieving high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, a design idea for a covalently bonded lateral/vertical black phosphorus (BP)-graphdiyne oxide (GDYO) heterostructure achieved through a facile ball-milling approach, is designed. Lateral heterogeneity is realized by the sp2-hybridized mode P-C bonds, which connect the phosphorus atoms at the edges of BP with the carbon atoms of the terminal acetylene in GDYO. The vertical connection of the heterojunction of BP and GDYO is connected by P-O-C bond. Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that BP-GDYO incorporates interfacial and structural engineering features, including built-in electric fields, chemical bond interactions, and maximized nanospace confinement effects. Therefore, BP-GDYO exhibits improved electrochemical kinetics and enhanced structural stability. Moreover, through ex- and in-situ studies, the lithiation mechanism of BP-GDYO, highlighting that the introduction of GDYO inhibits the shuttle/dissolution effect of phosphorus intermediates, hinders volume expansion, provides more reactive sites, and ultimately promotes reversible lithium storage, is clarified. The BP-GDYO anode exhibits lithium storage performance with high-rate capacity and long-cycle stability (602.6 mAh g-1 after 1 000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1). The proposed interfacial and structural engineering is universal and represents a conceptual advance in building high-performance LIBs electrode.

In Situ, Rapid Synthesis of Carbon-Loaded High Density and Ultrasmall High Entropy Oxide Nanoparticles as Efficient Electrocatalysts

High entropy materials offer almost unlimited catalytic possibilities due to their variable composition, unique structure, and excellent electrocatalytic performance. However, due to the strong tendency of nanoparticles to coarsen and agglomerate, it is still a challenge to synthesize nanoparticles using simple methods to precisely control the morphology and size of the nanoparticles in large quantities, and their large-scale application is limited by high costs and low yields. Herein, a series of high-entropy oxides (HEOs) nanoparticles with high-density and ultrasmall size (<5 nm) loaded on carbon nanosheets with large quantities are prepared by Joule-heating treatment of gel precursors in a short period of time (≈60 s). Among them, the prepared (FeCoNiRuMn)3O4-x catalyst shows the best electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction, with low overpotentials (230 mV @10 mA cm-2, 270 mV @100 mA cm-2), small Tafel slope (39.4 mV dec-1), and excellent stability without significant decay at 100 mA cm-2 after 100 h. The excellent performance of (FeCoNiRuMn)3O4-x can be attributed to the synergistic effect of multiple elements and the inherent structural stability of high entropy systems. This study provides a more comprehensive design idea for the preparation of efficient and stable high entropy catalysts.

The Accurate Synthesis of a Multiscale Metallic Interface on Graphdiyne

The accurate construction of composite material systems containing graphdiyne (GDY) and other metallic materials has promoted the formation of innovative structures and practical applications in the fields of energy, catalysis, optoelectronics, and biomedicine. To fulfill the practical requirements, the precise formation of multiscale interfaces over a wide range, from single atoms to nanostructures, plays an important role in the optimization of the structural design and properties. The intrinsic correlations between the structure, synthesis process, characteristic properties, and device performance are systematically investigated. This review outlines the current research achievements regarding the controlled formation of multiscale metallic interfaces on GDY. Synthetic strategies for interface regulation, as well as the correlation between the structure and performance, are presented. Furthermore, innovative research ideas for the design and synthesis of functional metal-based materials loaded onto GDY-based substances are also provided, demonstrating the promising application potential of GDY-based materials.

Layered High-Entropy Metallic Glasses for Photothermal CO2 Methanation

High entropy alloys and metallic glasses, as two typical metastable nanomaterials, have attracted tremendous interest in energy conversion catalysis due to their high reactivity in nonequilibrium states. Herein, a novel nanomaterial, layered high entropy metallic glass (HEMG), in a higher energy state than low-entropy alloys and its crystalline counterpart due to both the disordered elemental and structural arrangements, is synthesized. Specifically, the MnNiZrRuCe HEMG exhibits highly enhanced photothermal catalytic activity and long-term stability. An unprecedented CO2 methanation rate of 489 mmol g-1 h-1 at 330 °C is achieved, which is, to the authors' knowledge, the highest photothermal CO2 methanation rate in flow reactors. The remarkable activity originates from the abundant free volume and high internal energy state of HEMG, which lead to the extraordinary heterolytic H2 dissociation capacity. The high-entropy effect also ensures the excellent stability of HEMG for up to 450 h. This work not only provides a new perspective on the catalytic mechanism of HEMG, but also sheds light on the great catalytic potential in future carbon-negative industry.

Self-Organized Gradually Single-Atom-Layer of Metal Osmium for an Unprecedented Hydrogen Production from Seawater

Atomic thick two-dimensional (2D) materials with exciting physical, chemical, and electronic properties are gaining increasing attention in next-generation science and technology, showing great promise in catalysis and energy science. However, the precise design and synthesis of efficient catalytic systems based on such materials still face many difficulties, especially in how to control the preparation of structurally determined, highly active, atomic-scale distribution of material systems. Here, we report that a highly active zerovalent osmium single-atom-layer with a thickness of single atom size has been successfully and controllably self-organized on the surface of 2D graphdiyne (GDY) material. Detailed characterizations showed that the incomplete charge transfer effect between the Os atoms and GDY not only stabilized the catalytic system but also improved the intrinsic activity, making the Gibbs free energy reach the best and resulting in remarkable performance with a small overpotential of 49 mV at 500 mA cm-2, large specific j0 of 18.6 mA cm-2, and turnover frequency of 3.89 H2 s-1 at 50 mV. In addition, the formation of sp-C-Os bonds guarantees the high long-term stability of 800 h at a large current density of 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline simulated seawater.

HsGDY 3D Framework-Encapsulated Cu2O Quantum Dots for High-Efficiency Energy Storage

Nanostructured electrode materials become a vital component for future electrode materials because of their short electron and ion transport distances for fast charge and discharge processes and sufficient space between particles for volume expansion. So, achieving a smaller size of the nanomaterial with stable structure and high electrode performance is always the pursuit. Herein, the hybrid electrode material system hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY)/Cu2O-quantum dots (QDs) composed of an active carbon substrate and vibrant metal oxide QD load was established by HsGDY and cuprous oxide. The HsGDY frame with conjugated structure not only delivers impressive capacity by a self-exchange mechanism but also characterizes a matrix to forge strong connections with numerous active Cu2O-QDs for the prevention of aggregation, leading to a homogeneous storage and transport of charge in a bulk material of crisscross structural pores. QD-based electrode materials would exhibit desired capacities by their large surface area, abundant active surface atoms, and the short diffusion pathway. The hybrid system of HsGDY/Cu2O-QDs delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 1230 mA h g-1 with loading density reaching up to 1 mg cm-2. In the meantime, the electrode exhibits a long cycle stability of over 8000 cycles. The synergistic effect endows the hybrid system electrode with an approximately theoretical energy density, suggesting the great potential of such carbon/QD hybrid material system applied for high-performance batteries.

Synthesis of Ultrathin High-Entropy Oxides with Phase Controllability

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) with an ultrathin geometric structure are especially expected to exhibit extraordinary performance in different fields. The phase structure is deemed as a key factor in determining the properties of HEOs, rendering their phase control synthesis tempting. However, the disparity in intrinsic phase structures and physicochemical properties of multiple components makes it challenging to form single-phase HEOs with the target phase. Herein, we proposed a self-lattice framework-guided strategy to realize the synthesis of ultrathin HEOs with desired phase structures, including rock-salt, spinel, perovskite, and fluorite phases. The participation of the Ga assistor was conducive to the formation of the high-entropy mixing state by decreasing the formation energy. The as-prepared ultrathin spinel HEOs were demonstrated to be an excellent catalyst with high activity and stability for the oxygen evolution reaction in water electrolysis. Our work injects new vitality into the synthesis of HEOs for advanced applications and undoubtedly expedites their phase engineering.

Emerging two dimensional metastable-phase oxides: insights and prospects in synthesis and catalysis

Since the discovery of graphene, the development of new two-dimensional (2D) materials has received considerable interest. Recently, as a newly emerging member of the 2D family, 2D metastable-phase oxides that combine the unique advantages of metal oxides, 2D structures, and metastable-phase materials have shown enormous potential in various catalytic reactions. In this review, the potential of various 2D materials to form a metastable-phase is predicted. The advantages of 2D metastable-phase oxides for advanced applications, reliable methods of synthesizing 2D metastable-phase oxides, and the application of these oxides in different catalytic reactions are presented. Finally, the challenges associated with 2D metastable-phase oxides and future perspectives are discussed.

Controlled Growth of Metal Atom Arrays on Graphdiyne for Seawater Oxidation

Advanced atomic-level heterointerface engineering provides a promising method for the preparation of next-generation catalysts. Traditional carbon-based heterointerface catalytic performance rely heavily on the undetermined defects in complex and demanding preparation processes, rendering it impossible to control the catalytic performance. Here, we present a general method for the controlled growth of metal atom arrays on graphdiyne (GDY/IrCuOx), and we are surprised to find strong heterointerface strains during the growth. We successfully controlled the thickness of GDY to regulate the heterointerface metal atoms and achieved compressive strain at the interface. Experimental and density functional theory calculation results show that the unique incomplete charge transfer between GDY and metal atoms leads to the formation of strong interactions and significant heterointerface compressive strain between GDY and IrCuOx, which results in high oxidation performances with 1000 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 283 mV and long-term stability at large current densities in alkaline simulated seawater. We anticipate that this finding will contribute to construction of high-performance heterogeneous interface structures, leading to the development of new generation of GDY-based heterojunction catalysts in the field of catalysis for future promising performance.

Strong d-π Orbital Coupling of Co-C4 Atomic Sites on Graphdiyne Boosts Potassium-Sulfur Battery Electrocatalysis

Potassium-sulfur (K-S) batteries are severely limited by the sluggish kinetics of the solid-phase conversion of K2S3/K2S2 to K2S, the rate-determining and performance-governing step, which urgently requires a cathode with facilitated sulfur accommodation and improved catalytic efficiency. To this end, we leverage the orbital-coupling approach and herein report a strong d-π coupling catalytic configuration of single-atom Co anchored between two alkynyls of graphdiyne (Co-GDY). The d-π orbital coupling of the Co-C4 moiety fully redistributes electrons two-dimensionally across the GDY, and as a result, drastically accelerates the solid-phase K2S3/K2S2 to K2S conversion and enhances the adsorption of sulfur species. Applied as the cathode, the S/Co-GDY delivered a record-high rate performance of 496.0 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 in K-S batteries. In situ and ex situ characterizations coupling density functional theory (DFT) calculations rationalize how the strong d-π orbital coupling of Co-C4 configuration promotes the reversible solid-state transformation kinetics of potassium polysulfide for high-performance K-S batteries.

Accelerated Screening of Ternary Chalcogenides for Potential Photovoltaic Applications

Chalcogenides, which refer to chalcogen anions, have attracted considerable attention in multiple fields of applications, such as optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, transparent contacts, and thin-film transistors. In comparison to oxide counterparts, chalcogenides have demonstrated higher mobility and p-type dopability, owing to larger orbital overlaps between metal-X covalent chemical bondings and higher-energy valence bands derived by p-orbitals. Despite the potential of chalcogenides, the number of successfully synthesized compounds remains relatively low compared to that of oxides, suggesting the presence of numerous unexplored chalcogenides with fascinating physical characteristics. In this study, we implemented a systematic high-throughput screening process combined with first-principles calculations on ternary chalcogenides using 34 crystal structure prototypes. We generated a computational material database containing over 400,000 compounds by exploiting the ion-substitution approach at different atomic sites with elements in the periodic table. The thermodynamic stabilities of the candidates were validated using the chalcogenides included in the Open Quantum Materials Database. Moreover, we trained a model based on crystal graph convolutional neural networks to predict the thermodynamic stability of novel materials. Furthermore, we theoretically evaluated the electronic structures of the stable candidates using accurate hybrid functionals. A series of in-depth characteristics, including the carrier effective masses, electronic configuration, and photovoltaic conversion efficiency, was also investigated. Our work provides useful guidance for further experimental research in the synthesis and characterization of such chalcogenides as promising candidates, as well as charting the stability and optoelectronic performance of ternary chalcogenides.

Insights into high-entropy material synthesis dynamics criteria based on a thermodynamic framework

High-entropy materials (HEMs) have attracted increasing research interests owing to their structural diversity and great potential for regulation. Numerous HEMs synthesis criteria have so far been reported but most are based on thermodynamics while a guiding basis for the synthesis of HEMs is lacking, resulting in many synthesis problems. Based on the overall thermodynamic formation criterion of HEMs, this study has explored the principles of the synthesis dynamics required based on this criterion and the influence of different synthesis kinetic rates on the final products of the reaction, filling the gap suggesting that thermodynamic criteria cannot guide the specific process changes. This will effectively provide more specific guidelines for the top-level design of material synthesis. By considering various aspects of HEMs synthesis criteria, new technologies suitable for high-performance HEMs catalysts were extracted. Also, the physical and chemical characteristics of the HEMs obtained from actual synthesis can be predicted in a better way, playing an important role in the personalized customization of HEMs with specific performance. Future development directions of HEMs synthesis were prospected for possible prediction and customization of HEMs catalysts with high performance.

Two-Dimensional Carbon Graphdiyne: Advances in Fundamental and Application Research

Graphdiyne (GDY), a rising star of carbon allotropes, features a two-dimensional all-carbon network with the cohybridization of sp and sp² carbon atoms and represents a trend and research direction in the development of carbon materials. The sp/sp²-hybridized structure of GDY endows it with numerous advantages and advancements in controlled growth, assembly, and performance tuning, and many studies have shown that GDY has been a key material for innovation and development in the fields of catalysis, energy, photoelectric conversion, mode conversion and transformation of electronic devices, detectors, life sciences, etc. In the past ten years, the fundamental scientific issues related to GDY have been understood, showing differences from traditional carbon materials in controlled growth, chemical and physical properties and mechanisms, and attracting extensive attention from many scientists. GDY has gradually developed into one of the frontiers of chemistry and materials science, and has entered the rapid development period, producing large numbers of fundamental and applied research achievements in the fundamental and applied research of carbon materials. For the exploration of frontier scientific concepts and phenomena in carbon science research, there is great potential to promote progress in the fields of energy, catalysis, intelligent information, optoelectronics, and life sciences. In this review, the growth, self-assembly method, aggregation structure, chemical modification, and doping of GDY are shown, and the theoretical calculation and simulation and fundamental properties of GDY are also fully introduced. In particular, the applications of GDY and its formed aggregates in catalysis, energy storage, photoelectronic, biomedicine, environmental science, life science, detectors, and material separation are introduced.
