A highly distorted ultraelastic chemically complex Elinvar alloy

Lattice distortion enabling enhanced strength and plasticity in high entropy intermetallic alloy

Intermetallic alloys have traditionally been characterized by their inherent brittleness due to their lack of sufficient slip systems and absence of strain hardening. However, here we developed a single-phase B2 high-entropy intermetallic alloy that is both strong and plastic. Unlike conventional intermetallics, this high-entropy alloy features a highly distorted crystalline lattice with complex chemical order, leading to multiple slip systems and high flow stress. In addition, the alloy exhibits a dynamic hardening mechanism triggered by dislocation gliding that preserves its strength across a wide range of temperatures. As a result, this high-entropy intermetallic circumvents precipitous thermal softening, with extensive plastic flows even at high homologous temperatures, outperforming a variety of both body-centered cubic and B2 alloys. These findings reveal a promising direction for the development of intermetallic alloys with broad engineering applications.

Large Nonhysteretic Volume Magnetostriction in a Strong and Ductile High-Entropy Alloy

Rapid development of smart technologies poses a big challenge for magnetostrictive materials, which should not only permit isotropic and hysteresis-free actuation (i.e., nonhysteretic volume change) in magnetic fields, but also have high strength and high ductility. Unfortunately, the magnetostriction from self-assembly of ferromagnetic domains is volume-conserving; the volume magnetostriction from field-induced first-order phase transition has large intrinsic hysteresis; and most prototype magnetostrictive materials are intrinsically brittle. Here, a magnetic high-entropy alloy (HEA) Fe35Co35Al10Cr10Ni10 is reported that can rectify these challenges, exhibiting an unprecedented combination of large nonhysteretic volume magnetostriction, high tensile strength and large elongation strain, over a wide working temperature range from room temperature down to 100 K. Its exceptional properties stem from a dual-phase microstructure, where the face-centered cubic (FCC) matrix phase with nanoscale compositional and structural fluctuations can enable a magnetic-field-induced transition from low-spin small-volume state to high-spin large-volume state, and the ordered body-centered cubic (BCC) B2 phase contributes to mechanical strengthening. The present findings may provide insights into designing unconventional and technologically important magnetostrictive materials.

Mechanical, Thermal Properties, and Extreme Phase Stability of High-Entropy Diborides (V0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Cr0.2W0.2)B2

High-entropy diborides (HEDBs) have gained significant attention in industrial applications due to their vast composition space and tunable properties. We propose a solid solution reaction at high temperatures and pressures that successfully synthesized and sintered a novel, dense, and phase-pure HEDB (V0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Cr0.2W0.2)B2. A high asymptotic Vickers hardness of 26.3 ± 0.6 GPa and a bulk modulus of 320.5 ± 10.6 GPa were obtained. Additionally, we investigated the thermal oxidation process using TG-DSC from room temperature to 1500 °C and explored the phase stability of HEDBs under high-pressure conditions through in situ high-pressure synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction. We analyzed the formation of lattice distortion, chemical bonding, and band structure in (V0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Cr0.2W0.2)B2 using first-principles calculations. Surprisingly, we found that the predominant distortion in diborides occurs in the boron layer, supported by ELF. This may be due to uneven electron transfer rather than a straightforward correlation with the atomic radius. These results provide a novel synthesis process and additional experimental data on the mechanical and thermal properties and high-pressure phase stability of HEDBs. Our study offers further insights into the microscopic structure of lattice distortion in HEDBs, which could prove crucial for the selection and design of engineering advanced HEDBs.

A Giant Magneto-Superelasticity of 5% Enabled by Introducing Ordered Dislocations in Ni34Co8Cu8Mn36Ga14 Single Crystal

Elasticity, featured by a recoverable strain, refers to the ability that materials can return to their original shapes after deformation. Typically, the elastic strains of most metals are well-known 0.2%. In shape memory alloys and high entropy alloys, the elastic strains can be several percent, as called superelasticity, which are all triggered by external stresses. A superelasticity induced by magnetic field, termed as magneto-superelasticity, is extremely important for contactless work of materials and for developing brand-new large stroke actuators and high efficiency energy transducers. In magnetic shape memory alloys, the twin boundary motion driven by magnetic field can output a strain of several percent. However, this strain is unrecoverable when removing the magnetic field and hence it is not magneto-superelasticity. Here, a giant magneto-superelasticity of 5% in a Ni34Co8Cu8Mn36Ga14 single crystal is reported by introducing arrays of ordered dislocations to form preferentially oriented martensitic variants during the magnetically induced reverse martensitic transformation. This work provides an opportunity to achieve high performance in functional materials by defect engineering.

Complete miscibility of immiscible elements at the nanometre scale

Understanding the mixing behaviour of elements in a multielement material is important to control its structure and property. When the size of a multielement material is decreased to the nanoscale, the miscibility of elements in the nanomaterial often changes from its bulk counterpart. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and quantitative experimental insight into this process. Here we explored how the miscibility of Au and Rh evolves in nanoparticles of sizes varying from 4 to 1 nm and composition changing from 15% Au to 85% Au. We found that the two immiscible elements exhibit a phase-separation-to-alloy transition in nanoparticles with decreased size and become completely miscible in sub-2 nm particles across the entire compositional range. Quantitative electron microscopy analysis and theoretical calculations were used to show that the observed immiscibility-to-miscibility transition is dictated by particle size, composition and possible surface adsorbates present under the synthesis conditions.

Clarifying the four core effects of high-entropy materials

High-entropy materials emerged as a field of research in 2004, when the first research on high-entropy alloys was published. The scope was soon expanded from high-entropy alloys to medium-entropy alloys, as well as to ceramics, polymers and composite materials. A fundamental understanding on high-entropy materials was proposed in 2006 by the 'four core effects' - high-entropy, severe-lattice-distortion, sluggish-diffusion and cocktail effects - which are often used to describe and explain the mechanisms of various peculiar phenomena associated with high-entropy materials. Throughout the years, the effects have been examined rigorously, and their validity has been affirmed. This Perspective discusses the fundamental understanding of the four core effects in high-entropy materials and gives further insights to strengthen the understanding for these effects. All these clarifications are believed to be helpful in understanding low-to-high-entropy materials as well as to aid the design of materials when studying new compositions or pursuing their use in applications.

Elastic strain-induced amorphization in high-entropy alloys

Elastic stability is the basis for understanding structural responses to external stimuli in crystalline solids, including melting, incipient plasticity and fracture. In this work, elastic stability is investigated in a series of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) using in situ mechanical tests and atomic-resolution characterization in transmission electron microscopy. Under tensile loading, the HEA lattices are observed to undergo a sudden loss of ordering as the elastic strain reached ∽ 10%. Such elastic strain-induced amorphization stands in intrinsic contrast to previously reported dislocation-mediated elastic instability and defect accumulation-mediated amorphization, introducing a form of elastic instability. Together with the first principle calculations and atomic-resolution chemical mapping, we identify that the elastic strain-induced amorphization is closely related to the depressed dislocation nucleation due to the local atomic environment inhomogeneity of HEAs. Our findings provide insights for the understanding of the fundamental nature of physical mechanical phenomena like elastic instability and incipient plasticity.

Multifunctional High Entropy Alloys Enabled by Severe Lattice Distortion

Since 2004, the design of high entropy alloys (HEAs) has generated significant interest within the materials science community due to their exceptional structural and functional properties. By incorporating multiple principal elements into a common lattice, it is possible to create a single-phase crystal with a highly distorted lattice. This unique feature enables HEAs to offer a promising combination of mechanical and physical properties that are not typically observed in conventional alloys. In this article, an extensive overview of multifunctional HEAs that exhibit severe lattice distortion is provided, covering the theoretical models that are developed to understand lattice distortion, the experimental and computational methods employ to characterize lattice distortion, and most importantly, the impact of severe lattice distortion on the mechanical, physical and electrochemical properties of HEAs. Through this review, it is hoped to stimulate further research into the study of distorted lattices in crystalline solids.

Observation of Topological Hall Effect in a Chemically Complex Alloy

The topological Hall effect (THE) is the transport response of chiral spin textures and thus can serve as a powerful probe for detecting and understanding these unconventional magnetic orders. So far, the THE is only observed in either noncentrosymmetric systems where spin chirality is stabilized by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, or triangular-lattice magnets with Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida-type interactions. Here, a pronounced THE is observed in a Fe-Co-Ni-Mn chemically complex alloy with a simple face-centered cubic (fcc) structure across a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. The alloy is shown to have a strong magnetic frustration owing to the random occupation of magnetic atoms on the close-packed fcc lattice and the direct Heisenberg exchange interaction among atoms, as evidenced by the appearance of a reentrant spin glass state in the low-temperature regime and the first principles calculations. Consequently, THE is attributed to the nonvanishing spin chirality created by strong spin frustration under the external magnetic field, which is distinct from the mechanism responsible for the skyrmion systems, as well as geometrically frustrated magnets.

Scaling laws for lattice distortions: Application to high entropy alloys

Lattice distortions are intrinsic features of all solid solution alloys associated with varying atomic radii; this phenomenon facilitates the formation of single-phase solid solutions. Using high-entropy alloys (HEAs), as an example, we investigate the influence of variations in inter-atomic separations for stabilizing and controlling their structural, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties. This is done through a combination of statistical mechanics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations on simplified 2D systems, as well as a 3D crystals with harmonic and anharmonic inter-atomic bonds with varying natural inter-atomic separations. We demonstrate that the impact of this inter-atomic length disorder (representing static lattice distortion) and temperature fluctuations (representing dynamic lattice distortion) on fundamental and universal thermodynamic, structural, and elastic characteristics are similar and can be unified through effective temperature; i.e. a scaling law for HEAs that establishes a relationship between these factors. This scaling law reveals that different HEAs (i.e. varying degrees of local lattice distortions) collapse onto a single curve when plotted against the effective temperature. We demonstrate that lattice distortion significantly enhances the stability of solid solution alloys (relative to phase separation or ordering by effectively increasing the temperature of the system; this stabilization effect is particularly pronounced in HEAs).

Ultra-Efficient and Cost-Effective Platinum Nanomembrane Electrocatalyst for Sustainable Hydrogen Production

Hydrogen production through hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) offers a promising solution to combat climate change by replacing fossil fuels with clean energy sources. However, the widespread adoption of efficient electrocatalysts, such as platinum (Pt), has been hindered by their high cost. In this study, we developed an easy-to-implement method to create ultrathin Pt nanomembranes, which catalyze HER at a cost significantly lower than commercial Pt/C and comparable to non-noble metal electrocatalysts. These Pt nanomembranes consist of highly distorted Pt nanocrystals and exhibit a heterogeneous elastic strain field, a characteristic rarely seen in conventional crystals. This unique feature results in significantly higher electrocatalytic efficiency than various forms of Pt electrocatalysts, including Pt/C, Pt foils, and numerous Pt single-atom or single-cluster catalysts. Our research offers a promising approach to develop highly efficient and cost-effective low-dimensional electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production, potentially addressing the challenges posed by the climate crisis.

Oxidation-induced superelasticity in metallic glass nanotubes

Although metallic nanostructures have been attracting tremendous research interest in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, it is known that environmental attacks, such as surface oxidation, can easily initiate cracking on the surface of metals, thus deteriorating their overall functional/structural properties1-3. In sharp contrast, here we report that severely oxidized metallic glass nanotubes can attain an ultrahigh recoverable elastic strain of up to ~14% at room temperature, which outperform bulk metallic glasses, metallic glass nanowires and many other superelastic metals hitherto reported. Through in situ experiments and atomistic simulations, we reveal that the physical mechanisms underpinning the observed superelasticity can be attributed to the formation of a percolating oxide network in metallic glass nanotubes, which not only restricts atomic-scale plastic events during loading but also leads to the recovery of elastic rigidity on unloading. Our discovery implies that oxidation in low-dimensional metallic glasses can result in unique properties for applications in nanodevices.

Coexistence of Superhardness and Metal-Like Electrical Conductivity in High-Entropy Dodecaboride Composite with Atomic-Scale Interlocks

High electrical conductivity and super high hardness are two sought-after material properties, but both are contradictory because the effective suppression of dislocation movement generally increases the scattering of conducting electrons. Here we synthesized a high-entropy dodecaboride composite (HEDC) with a large number of atomic-scale interlocking layers. It shows a Vickers hardness of 51.2 ± 3.6 GPa under an applied load of 0.49 N and an electrical resistivity of 44.5 μΩ·cm at room temperature. Such HEDC achieves superhardness by inheriting the high intrinsic hardness of its constituent phases and restricting the dislocation motion to further enhance the extrinsic hardness through forming numerous atom-scale interlocks between different slip systems. Moreover, the HEDC maintains the excellent electrical conductivity of the constituent borides, and the competition between two correlating structures produces the special kind of coherent boundary that minimizes the scattering of conducting electrons and does not largely deteriorate the electrical conductivity.

Defect Engineering of a High-Entropy Metallic Glass Surface for High-Performance Overall Water Splitting at Ampere-Level Current Densities

Platinum-based electrocatalysts possess high water electrolysis activity and are essential components for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A major challenge, however, is how to break the cost-efficiency trade-off. Here, a novel defect engineering strategy is presented to construct a nanoporous (FeCoNiB0.75 )97 Pt3 (atomic %) high-entropy metallic glass (HEMG) with a nanocrystalline surface structure that contains large amounts of lattice distortion and stacking faults to achieve excellent electrocatalytic performance using only 3 at% of Pt. The defect-rich HEMG achieves ultralow overpotentials at ampere-level current density of 1000 mA cm-2 for HER (104 mV) and oxygen evolution reaction (301 mV) under alkaline conditions, while retains a long-term durability exceeding 200 h at 100 mA cm-2 . Moreover, it only requires 81 and 122 mV to drive the current densities of 1000 and 100 mA cm-2 for HER under acidic and neutral conditions, respectively. Modelling results reveal that lattice distortion and stacking fault defects help to optimize atomic configuration and modulate electronic interaction, while the surface nanoporous architecture provides abundant active sites, thus synergistically contributing to the reduced energy barrier for water electrolysis. This defect engineering approach combined with a HEMG design strategy is expected to be widely applicable for development of high-performance alloy catalysts.

Ordering-Dependent Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis of High-Entropy Intermetallic Pt4 FeCoCuNi

Disordered solid-solution high-entropy alloys have attracted wide research attention as robust electrocatalysts. In comparison, ordered high-entropy intermetallics have been hardly explored and the effects of the degree of chemical ordering on catalytic activity remain unknown. In this study, a series of multicomponent intermetallic Pt4 FeCoCuNi nanoparticles with tunable ordering degrees is fabricated. The transformation mechanism of the multicomponent nanoparticles from disordered structure into ordered structure is revealed at the single-particle level, and it agrees with macroscopic analysis by selected-area electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction. The electrocatalytic performance of Pt4 FeCoCuNi nanoparticles correlates well with their crystal structure and electronic structure. It is found that increasing the degree of ordering promotes electrocatalytic performance. The highly ordered Pt4 FeCoCuNi achieves the highest mass activities toward both acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) which are 18.9-fold and 5.6-fold higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. The experiment also shows that this catalyst demonstrates better long-term stability than both partially ordered and disordered Pt4 FeCoCuNi as well as Pt/C when subject to both HER and ORR. This ordering-dependent structure-property relationship provides insight into the rational design of catalysts and stimulates the exploration of many other multicomponent intermetallic alloys.

High-entropy alloy nanopatterns by prescribed metallization of DNA origami templates

High-entropy multimetallic nanopatterns with controlled morphology, composition and uniformity hold great potential for developing nanoelectronics, nanophotonics and catalysis. Nevertheless, the lack of general methods for patterning multiple metals poses a limit. Here, we develop a DNA origami-based metallization reaction system to prescribe multimetallic nanopatterns with peroxidase-like activities. We find that strong coordination between metal elements and DNA bases enables the accumulation of metal ions on protruding clustered DNA (pcDNA) that are prescribed on DNA origami. As a result of the condensation of pcDNA, these sites can serve as nucleation site for metal plating. We have synthesized multimetallic nanopatterns composed of up to five metal elements (Co, Pd, Pt, Ag and Ni), and obtained insights on elemental uniformity control at the nanoscale. This method provides an alternative pathway to construct a library of multimetallic nanopatterns.

Atomic-level flatness on oxygen-free copper surface in lapping and chemical mechanical polishing

Oxygen-free copper (OFC) serves as a core component of high-end manufacturing, and requires high surface quality. It is always a significant challenge to manufacture high-quality atomic-level surfaces. In this study, SiO₂ nanospheres with good dispersibility were prepared and a late-model environmentally friendly chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) slurry was developed. The CMP slurry consists of SiO₂ nanospheres, CeO₂ nanospheres, H₂O₂, NaHCO₃, polyaspartic acid and deionized water. After CMP, the average roughness (Sa) of the OFC wafer reached 0.092 nm with an area of 50 × 50 μm². Atomic-level flatness on the oxygen-free copper surface was acquired, which has never been reported before. Moreover, the mechanical removal mechanism of abrasive particles and the chemical reactions during lapping and CMP are proposed in detail. The thickness and composition of the damaged layer after lapping and polishing were analyzed. The lapping-damaged layer consists of a lattice distortion region, moiré fringes, grain boundary, superlattice and edge dislocations, and the polishing-damaged layer contains a handful of stacking faults with single-layer or multi-layer atoms. The chemical action involves three reactions: oxidation, corrosion and chelation. The processing method and its mechanistic explanation pave the way for the fabrication of high-performance OFC surfaces for use in vacuum, aerospace, military and electronic industries.

Non-Hookean large elastic deformation in bulk crystalline metals

Crystalline metals can have large theoretical elastic strain limits. However, a macroscopic block of conventional crystalline metals practically suffers a very limited elastic deformation of <0.5% with a linear stress–strain relationship obeying Hooke’s law. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a large tensile elastic deformation with an elastic strain of >4.3% in a Cu-based single crystalline alloy at its bulk scale at room temperature. The large macroscopic elastic strain that originates from the reversible lattice strain of a single phase is demonstrated by in situ microstructure and neutron diffraction observations. Furthermore, the elastic reversible deformation, which is nonhysteretic and quasilinear, is associated with a pronounced elastic softening phenomenon. The increase in the stress gives rise to a reduced Young’s modulus, unlike the traditional Hooke’s law behaviour. The experimental discovery of a non-Hookean large elastic deformation offers the potential for the development of bulk crystalline metals as high-performance mechanical springs or for new applications via “elastic strain engineering.”

Engineering metals often suffer from a small elastic deformation with a linear stress-strain relationship obeying Hooke’s law. Here the authors observe a large nonlinear tensile elastic deformation with a strain of >4.3% in a bulk Cu alloy that offers potential for elastic strain engineering.

Atomic investigations on the tension-compression asymmetry of AlxFeNiCrCu (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) high-entropy alloy nanowires

The tension and compression of high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanowires (NWs) are remarkably asymmetric, but the micro mechanism is still unclear. In this research, the tension-compression asymmetry of Al_xFeNiCrCu HEA NWs (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) was quantitatively characterized via molecular dynamics simulations, focusing on the influences of the NW diameter, the Al content, the crystalline orientation, and the temperature, which are significant for applying HEAs in nanotechnology. The increased NW diameter improves the energy required for stacking faults nucleating, thus strengthening AlFeNiCrCu HEA NWs. A few twins during stretching weaken the strengthening effects, thereby decreasing the tension-compression asymmetry. The increased Al content raises the tension-compression asymmetry by promoting the face-centered cubic to body-centered cubic phase transition during stretching. The tension along the [001] crystalline orientation is stronger than the compression, while the [110] and [111] crystalline orientations are entirely the opposite, and the tension-compression asymmetry along the [111] crystalline orientation is the minimum. The diversities in the tension-compression asymmetry depend on the deformation mechanism. Compressing along the [001] crystalline orientation and stretching along the [110] crystalline orientation induces twinning. Deformation along the [111] crystalline orientation only leaves stacking faults in the NWs. Therefore, the tension and compression along the [111] crystalline orientation exhibit minimal asymmetry. As the temperature rises, the tension-compression asymmetry along the [001] and [111] crystalline orientations increases, while that along the [110] crystalline orientation decreases.

Heterogeneous lattice strain strengthening in severely distorted crystalline solids

Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) exhibit outstanding mechanical properties because the core effect of severe atomic lattice distortion is distinctly different from that of traditional alloys. However, at the mesoscopic scale the underlying physics for the abundant dislocation activities responsible for strength-ductility synergy has not been uncovered. While the Eshelby mean-field approaches become insufficient to tackle yielding and plasticity in severely distorted crystalline solids, here we develop a three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics simulation approach by taking into account the experimentally measured lattice strain field from a model FeCoCrNiMn MPEA to explore the heterogeneous strain-induced strengthening mechanisms. Our results reveal that the heterogeneous lattice strain causes unusual dislocation behaviors (i.e., multiple kinks/jogs and bidirectional cross slips), resulting in the strengthening mechanisms that underpin the strength-ductility synergy. The outcome of our research sheds important insights into the design of strong yet ductile distorted crystalline solids, such as high-entropy alloys and high-entropy ceramics.
