Environmental filtering triggers community assembly of forest understorey plants in Central European pine stands

Living at the edge: the functional niche occupation of woody plant communities in the submediterranean ecotone

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Submediterranean areas are rich ecotones, where slight modifications in environmental conditions can lead to substantial changes in the composition of plant communities. They thus offer an ideal scenario to examine plant community assembly. In this study, we followed a trait-based approach including intraspecific variability to elucidate (1) the relationship between niche occupancy components and species richness, (2) the processes governing the assembly of these communities and (3) the contribution of intraspecific trait variability in shaping the functional trait space.

METHODS

We measured eight morphological and chemical traits in 405 individuals across 60 plots located in different forest communities (Mediterranean, Eurosiberian and Mixed) coexisting within a submediterranean ecosystem in central Spain. We calculated three niche occupancy components related to Hutchinson's n-dimensional hypervolumes: the total functional volume of the community, the functional overlap between species within the community and the average functional volume per species, and then used null models to explore the relative importance of habitat filtering, limiting similarity and intraspecific variability as assembly patterns.

KEY RESULTS

Both habitat filtering and niche differentiation drive the community assembly of Mediterranean communities, whereas limiting similarity and hierarchical competition shape Eurosiberian communities. Intraspecific responses were mostly explained by shifts in species niches across the functional space (changes in the position of the centroids of hypervolumes).

CONCLUSIONS

Different assembly mechanisms govern the structure of Mediterranean, Eurosiberian and Mixed plant communities. Combining niche occupancy components with a null model approach at different spatial scales offers new insights into the mechanisms driving plant community assembly. Consideration of intraspecific variability is key for understanding the mechanisms governing species coexistence in species-rich ecotones.

Deforestation strengthens environmental filtering and competitive exclusion in Neotropical streams and rivers

Understanding how anthropization impacts the assembly of species onto communities is pivotal to go beyond the observation of biodiversity changes and reveal how disturbances affect the environmental and biotic processes shaping biodiversity. Here, we propose a simple framework to measure the assembly processes underpinning functional convergence/divergence patterns. We applied this framework to northern Amazonian fish communities inventoried using environmental DNA in 35 stream sites and 64 river sites. We found that the harsh and unstable environmental conditions characterizing streams conveyed communities towards functional convergence, by filtering traits related to food acquisition and, to a lower extent, dispersal. Such environmental filtering also strengthened competition by excluding species having less competitive food acquisition traits. Instead, random species assembly was more marked in river communities, which may be explained by the downstream position of rivers facilitating the dispersion of species. Although fish assembly rules differed between streams and river fish communities, anthropogenic disturbances reduced functional divergence in both ecosystems, with a reinforcement of both environmental filtering and weaker competitor exclusion. This may explain the substantial biodiversity alterations observed under slight deforestation levels in Neotropical freshwater ecosystems and underlines their vulnerability to anthropic disturbances that not only affect species persistence but also modify community assembly rules.

Plant diversity changes in a nature reserve: a probabilistic sampling method for quantitative assessments

Species pool conservation is critical for the stability of ecosystem processes. However, climate and land use changes will likely affect biodiversity, and managers of protected areas are under increasing pressure to monitor native species diversity changes by approaches that are scientifically sound and comparable over time. Here we describe a plant diversity monitoring system in use since 2002 in the “Montagna di Torricchio” Nature Reserve (LTER_EU_IT_033), a Central Apennines representative area of 317 ha, most of which is under strict protection. The aim of this paper was to assess changes in plant species richness over time and to deduce the patterns of species assemblage. The monitoring system was based on a probabilistic sampling design representative of the different physiognomic vegetation types occurring in the Reserve. A total of 34 plots (10×10m) were sampled in 2002, 2003 and 2015, and their species presence/absence and relative coverage were estimated. Repeated measure ANOVA was used to test for plot-level and ecosystem-based changes in species richness along the study period. Temporal nestedness and temporal turnover metrics were used to assess patterns of species’ compositional changes. The results showed significantly different levels of species richness depending on the year, with the lowest value in 2003, probably linked to extreme drought events. Forest systems were comparatively stable, demonstrating the capacity to buffer interannual climate variability. Regarding compositional changes along the entire period (2002–2015), we found random patterns of both temporal nestedness and turnover, indicating stability in species composition. However, we also showed the contemporary occurrence of species loss and species replacement processes, considering the dry year 2003, a finding which should be further explored through fine-scale studies to unravel mechanisms of community assembly under drought. The use of a probabilistic sampling design representative of the different physiognomic vegetation types proved to be advantageous in monitoring the Nature Reserve vegetation and collecting reliable quantitative information. This data, in turn, provides the basis for improvements in management practices and proposed adaptation measures.
