Predicting the Ionic Product of Water

The effect of machine learning predicted anharmonic frequencies on thermodynamic properties of fluid hydrogen fluoride

Anharmonic effects play a crucial role in determining thermochemical properties of liquids and gases. For such extended phases, the inclusion of anharmonicity in reliable electronic structure methods is computationally extremely demanding, and hence, anharmonic effects are often lacking in thermochemical calculations. In this study, we apply the quantum cluster equilibrium method to transfer density functional theory calculations at the cluster level to the macroscopic, liquid, and gaseous phase of hydrogen fluoride. This allows us to include anharmonicity, either via vibrational self-consistent field calculations for smaller clusters or using a regression model for larger clusters. We obtain the structural composition of the fluid phases in terms of the population of different clusters as well as isobaric heat capacities as an example for thermodynamic properties. We study the role of anharmonicities for these analyses and observe that, in particular, the dominating structural motifs are rather sensitive to the anharmonicity in vibrational frequencies. The regression model proves to be a promising way to get access to anharmonic features, and the extension to more sophisticated machine-learning models is promising.

Quantum Cluster Equilibrium Theory for Multicomponent Liquids

In this work, we present a new theory to treat multicomponent liquids based on quantum-chemically calculated clusters. The starting point is the binary quantum cluster equilibrium theory, which is able to treat binary systems. The theory provides one equation with two unknowns. In order to obtain another linearly independent equation, the conservation of mass is used. However, increasing the number of components leads to more unknowns, and this requires linearly independent equations. We address this challenge by introducing a generalization of the conservation of arbitrary quantities accompanied by a comprehensive mathematical proof. Furthermore, a case study for the application of the new theory to ternary mixtures of chloroform, methanol, and water is presented. Calculated enthalpies of vaporization for the whole composition range are given, and the populations or weights of the different clusters are visualized.

Exploring the Influence of the Phosphorus-Heteroatom Substitution in Nicotine on Its Electronic and Vibrational Spectroscopic Properties

The influence of phosphorus substitution of nitrogen in heterocyclic compounds on the vibrational spectroscopy as well as frontier molecular orbitals are analyzed. Nicotine with two nitrogen atoms in its structure is taken as the sample system to be studied computationally. By replacing the nitrogen atom in one or both rings of this molecule with phosphorus, three nicotine derivatives are created. The vibrational circular dichroism and infrared spectra of these four molecules in their monomer state, as well as the assemblies up to trimers are determined. The aforementioned spectra are calculated using static quantum chemical calculations employing a cluster-weighted approach. The calculated gas phase spectra of nicotine are compared to their respective experimental spectra. It is observed that the nicotine derivatives with phosphorus in the methylpyrrolidine ring have considerably different gas phase and bulk phase vibrational circular dichroism spectra when compared to nicotine. The phosphorus substitution reduces the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital as well as altering the polarizability and reactivity of the investigated molecules.

Exploring borderline SN1-SN2 mechanisms: the role of explicit solvation protocols in the DFT investigation of isopropyl chloride

Nucleophilic substitution at saturated carbon is a crucial class of organic reactions, playing a pivotal role in various chemical transformations that yield valuable compounds for society. Despite the well-established SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, secondary substrates, particularly in solvolysis reactions, often exhibit a borderline pathway. A molecular-level understanding of these processes is fundamental for developing more efficient chemical transformations. Typically, quantum-chemical simulations of the solvent medium combine explicit and implicit solvation methods. The configuration of explicit molecules can be defined through top-down approaches, such as Monte Carlo (MC) calculations for generating initial configurations, and bottom-up methods that involve user-dependent protocols to add solvent molecules around the substrate. Herein, we investigated the borderline mechanism of the hydrolysis of a secondary substrate, isopropyl chloride (iPrCl), at DFT-M06-2X/aug-cc-pVDZ level, employing explicit and explicit + implicit protocols. Top-down and bottom-up approaches were employed to generate substrate-solvent complexes of varying number (n = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12) and configurations of H2O molecules. Our findings consistently reveal that regardless of the solvation approach, the hydrolysis of iPrCl follows a loose-SN2-like mechanism with nucleophilic solvent assistance. Increasing the water cluster around the substrate in most cases led to reaction barriers of ΔH‡ ≈ 21 kcal mol-1, with nine water molecules from MC configurations sufficient to describe the reaction. The More O'Ferrall-Jencks plot demonstrates an SN1-like character for all transition state structures, showing a clear merged profile. The fragmentation activation strain analyses indicate that energy barriers are predominantly controlled by solvent-substrate interactions, supported by the leaving group stabilization assessed through CHELPG atomic charges.

Structures of DMSO clusters and quantum cluster equilibrium (QCE)

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) clusters are crucial for understanding processes in liquid DMSO. Despite its importance, DMSO clusters have received negligible attention due to the complexity of their potential energy surfaces (PESs). In this work, we explored the PESs of the DMSO clusters from dimer to decamer, starting with classical molecular dynamics, followed by full optimizations at the PW6B95-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory. In addition, the binding energies, the binding enthalpy per DMSO, and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis of the most stable isomers are reported. Temperature effects on the stability of the isomers have also been assessed. After thoroughly exploring the PESs of the DMSO clusters, 159 configurations have been used to apply the quantum cluster equilibrium (QCE) theory to liquid DMSO. The quantum cluster equilibrium theory has been applied to determine the liquid properties of DMSO from DMSO clusters. Thus, using the QCE, the population of the liquid DMSO, its infrared spectrum, and some thermodynamic properties of the liquid DMSO are predicted. The QCE results show that the population of the liquid DMSO is mainly dominated by the DMSO dimer and decamer, with the contribution in trace of the DMSO monomer, trimer, tetramer, pentamer, and octamer. More interestingly, the predicted infrared spectrum of liquid DMSO is in qualitative agreement with the experiment.

Appropriate clusterset selection for the prediction of thermodynamic properties of liquid water with QCE theory

Evident in many physical and chemical phenomena, thermodynamics is the study of how energy is stored, transformed and transferred in a molecule or material. However, prediction of these properties with simulation techniques is a non-trivial task as several factors such as composition and intermolecular interactions come into play. While molecular dynamics and ab initio molecular dynamics are the most common techniques for the prediction of thermodynamic properties, there exists many shortcomings associated with their use. Therefore, in this work we instead apply QCE theory to predict the thermodynamic properties of liquid water. This theory assumes that a condensed phase system can be represented as a 'mixture' of varying sized clusters rather than as a continuum. As QCE theory relies on first-principle simulations and statistical thermodynamics to determine the thermodynamic behavior of a system, appropriate selection of clusters is a crucial step towards achieving accurate predictions. In this study, we use molecular dynamics and ab initio calculations to obtain initial configurations of 400 water clusters, Wn where n = 3 to 10 and contrast their stability using two different criteria. The role of entropy towards cluster stabilization is investigated by comparing the binding (ΔE_BIND/mol) and Gibbs free binding energy per molecule (ΔG_BIND/mol) of various Wn at 298.15 K. Initial clustersets are constructed by exploring two-, three-, four and five-combinations of clustersets using the minimum ΔG_BIND/mol structures of Wn. We also expand the ΔG_BIND/mol criteria for Wn of sizes 3 to 7 to include values larger than 0.0 kJ mol^-1 and smaller than 3.0 kJ mol^-1 as a means of improving thermodynamic predictions. 37 of the 459 resulting clustersets predicted the correct boiling point of water and its thermodynamic properties with an accuracy of 95%. A scaled population-weighted infrared spectrum was compared to experimental results to validate the composition of the top 5 clustersets. The predicted spectra showed an exact match within the low frequency range (<1000 cm^-1) with some discrepancy at the high frequency range (>3400 cm^-1). This work highlights that ΔG_BIND/mol is so far the best criteria to apply when determining an appropriate clusterset for QCE theory.

Conformer Weighting and Differently Sized Cluster Weighting for Nicotine and Its Phosphorus Derivatives

Weighting methods applied to systems with many conformers have been broadly employed to calculate thermodynamic properties, structural characteristics, and populations. To better understand and test the sensitivity of conventional weighting methods, the conformational distributions of nicotine and its phosphorus-substituted derivatives are investigated. The weighting schemes used for this are all based on Boltzmann statistics. Classical Boltzmann factors based on the electronic energy and the Gibbs free energy are calculated at different quantum chemical levels of theory and compared to cluster weights obtained by the quantum cluster equilibrium method. Furthermore, the influence of the modified rigid-rotor-harmonic-oscillator (mRRHO) approximation on the cluster weights is investigated. The substitution of the nitrogen atom in the methylpyrrolidine ring by a phosphorus atom results in more monomer conformers and clusters being populated. The conformational distribution of the monomers remained stable at different levels of theory and weighting methods. However, going to dimers and trimers, we observe a significant influence of the level of theory, weighting method, and mRRHO cutoff on the populations of these clusters. We show that mRRHO cutoff values of 50 and 100 cm^-1 yield similar results, which is why 50 cm^-1 is recommended as a robust choice. Furthermore, we observe that the global minimum for ΔE₀ and ΔG varies in a few cases and that the global minimum is not always the dominantly occupied structure.

High-Density “Windowpane” Coordination Patterns of Water Clusters and Their NBO/NRT Characterization

Cluster mixture models for liquid water at higher pressures suggest the need for water clusters of higher coordination and density than those commonly based on tetrahedral H-bonding motifs. We show here how proton-ordered water clusters of increased coordination and density can assemble from a starting cyclic tetramer or twisted bicyclic (Möbius-like) heptamer to form extended Aufbau sequences of stable two-, three-, and four-coordinate “windowpane” motifs. Such windowpane clusters exhibit sharply reduced (~90°) bond angles that differ appreciably from the tetrahedral angles of idealized crystalline ice I_h. Computed free energy and natural resonance theory (NRT) bond orders provide quantitative descriptors for the relative stabilities of clusters and strengths of individual coordinative linkages. The unity and consistency of NRT description is demonstrated to extend from familiar supra-integer bonds of the molecular regime to the near-zero bond orders of the weakest linkages in the present H-bond clusters. Our results serve to confirm that H-bonding exemplifies resonance–covalent (fractional) bonding in the sub-integer range and to further discount the dichotomous conceptions of “electrostatics” for intermolecular bonding vs. “covalency” for intramolecular bonding that still pervade much of freshman-level pedagogy and force-field methodology.

Uncertainty quantification of phase transition quantities from cluster weighting calculations

In this work, we investigate how uncertainties in experimental input data influence the results of quantum cluster equilibrium calculations. In particular, we focus on the calculation of vaporization enthalpies and entropies of seven organic liquids, compare two computational approaches for their calculation and investigate how these properties are affected by changes in the experimental input data. It is observed that the vaporization enthalpies and entropies show a smooth dependence on changes in the reference density and boiling point. The reference density is found to have only a small influence on the vaporization thermodynamics, whereas the boiling point has a large influence on the vaporization enthalpy but only a small influence on the vaporization entropy. Furthermore we employed the Gauss--Hermite estimator in order to quantify the uncertainty in the thermodynamic functions that stems from inaccuracies in the experimental reference data at the example of the vaporization enthalpy of (\textit{R})-butan-2-ol. We quantify the uncertainty as 30.95~$\cdot$10$^{-3}$~kJ~mol$^{-1}$. Additionally we compare the convergence behaviour and computational effort of the Gauss--Hermite estimator with the Monte Carlo approach and show the superiority of the former. By this, we present how uncertainty quantification can be applied to examples from theoretical chemistry.

The Ionic Product of Water in the Eye of the Quantum Cluster Equilibrium

The theoretical description of water properties continues to be a challenge. Using quantum cluster equilibrium (QCE) theory, we combine state-of-the-art quantum chemistry and statistical thermodynamic methods with the almost historical Clausius-Clapeyron relation to study water self-dissociation and the thermodynamics of vaporization. We pay particular attention to the treatment of internal rotations and their impact on the investigated properties by employing the modified rigid-rotor-harmonic-oscillator (mRRHO) approach. We also study a novel QCE parameter-optimization procedure. Both the ionic product and the vaporization enthalpy yield an astonishing agreement with experimental reference data. A significant influence of the mRRHO approach is observed for cluster populations and, consequently, for the ionic product. Thermodynamic properties are less affected by the treatment of these low-frequency modes.

Thermodynamically Stable Cationic Dimers in Carboxyl-Functionalized Ionic Liquids: The Paradoxical Case of "Anti-Electrostatic" Hydrogen Bonding

We show that carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) form doubly hydrogen-bonded cationic dimers (c⁺=c⁺) despite the repulsive forces between ions of like charge and competing hydrogen bonds between cation and anion (c⁺–a⁻). This structural motif as known for formic acid, the archetype of double hydrogen bridges, is present in the solid state of the IL 1−(carboxymethyl)pyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [HOOC−CH₂−py][NTf₂]. By means of quantum chemical calculations, we explored different hydrogen-bonded isomers of neutral (HOOC–(CH₂)_n–py⁺)₂(NTf₂⁻)₂, single-charged (HOOC–(CH₂)_n–py⁺)₂(NTf₂⁻), and double-charged (HOOC– (CH₂)_n−py⁺)₂ complexes for demonstrating the paradoxical case of “anti-electrostatic” hydrogen bonding (AEHB) between ions of like charge. For the pure doubly hydrogen-bonded cationic dimers (HOOC– (CH₂)_n−py⁺)₂, we report robust kinetic stability for n = 1–4. At n = 5, hydrogen bonding and dispersion fully compensate for the repulsive Coulomb forces between the cations, allowing for the quantification of the two equivalent hydrogen bonds and dispersion interaction in the order of 58.5 and 11 kJmol⁻¹, respectively. For n = 6–8, we calculated negative free energies for temperatures below 47, 80, and 114 K, respectively. Quantum cluster equilibrium (QCE) theory predicts the equilibria between cationic monomers and dimers by considering the intermolecular interaction between the species, leading to thermodynamic stability at even higher temperatures. We rationalize the H-bond characteristics of the cationic dimers by the natural bond orbital (NBO) approach, emphasizing the strong correlation between NBO-based and spectroscopic descriptors, such as NMR chemical shifts and vibrational frequencies.

Electron Flow Characterization of Charge Transfer for Carbonic Acid to Strong Base Proton Transfer in Aqueous Solution

Protonation of the strong base methylamine CH₃NH₂ by carbonic acid H₂CO₃ in aqueous solution, HOCOOH···NH₂CH₃ → HOCOO^-···⁺HNH₂CH₃, has been previously studied ( J. Phys. Chem. B 2016, 109, 2271-2280; J. Phys. Chem. B 2016, 109, 2281-2290) via Car-Parinnello molecular dynamics. This proton transfer (PT) reaction within a hydrogen (H)-bonded complex was found to be barrierless and very rapid, with key reaction coordinates comprising the proton coordinate, the H-bond separation R_ON, and a solvent coordinate, reflecting the water solvent rearrangement involved in the neutral to ion pair conversion. In the present work, the reaction's charge flow aspects are analyzed in detail, especially a description via Mulliken charge transfer for PT (MCTPT). A natural bond orbital analysis and some extensions of them are employed for the complex's electronic structure during the reaction trajectories. Results demonstrate that consistent with the MCTPT picture, the charge transfer (CT) occurs from a methylamine base nonbonding orbital to a carbonic acid antibonding orbital. A complementary MCTPT reaction product perspective of CT from the antibonding orbital of the HN⁺ moiety to the nonbonding orbital of the oxygen in the H-bond complex is also presented. σ_OH and σ_HN⁺ bond order expressions show this CT to occur within the H-bond OHN triad, an aspect key for simultaneous bond-breaking and -forming in the PT reaction.

Hydrogen Bonding and Vaporization Thermodynamics in Hexafluoroisopropanol-Acetone and -Methanol Mixtures. A Joined Cluster Analysis and Molecular Dynamic Study

Binary mixtures of hexafluoroisopropanol with either methanol or acetone are analyzed via classical molecular dynamics simulations and quantum cluster equilibrium calculations. In particular, their populations and thermodynamic properties are investigated with the binary quantum cluster equilibrium method, using our in‐house code peacemaker 2.8, upgraded with temperature‐dependent parameters. A novel approach, where the final density from classical molecular dynamics, has been used to generate the necessary reference isobars. The hydrogen bond network in both type of mixtures at molar fraction of hexafluoroisopropanol of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 respectively is investigated via the molecular dynamics trajectories and the cluster results. In particular, the populations show that mixed clusters are preferred in both systems even at 0.2 molar fractions of hexafluoroisopropanol. Enthalpies and entropies of vaporization are calculated for the neat and mixed systems and found to be in good agreement with experimental values.

Structure and solvation dynamics of the hydroxide ion in ice-like water clusters: a CCSD(T) and car-parrinello molecular dynamics study

Using MP2, CCSD(T) electronic structure theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we explore the structure, solvation dynamics and vibrational spectra of OH^-(H₂O)_n clusters. Our study reports new cubic and fused cubic global minima structures of OH^-(H₂O)_n for n = 8-26 with surface and interior solvation arrangements. In the case of OH^-(H₂O)₂₆, we show that MP2 and CCSD(T) calculations predict global minima structures with the hydroxide ion occupying the interior region of a densely packed cubic cluster that is secured by ionic hydrogen bonds. More importantly, results from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of OH^-(H₂O)₂₆ demonstrate that the hydroxide ion remains in the cluster interior and hexa-coordinated, irrespective of the temperature, up to around 175 K, then incrementally transitions from a surface-exposed penta- (170-200 K), to a tetra- (225 K) to a tri-coordinated OH^-(H₂O)₃ structure at 300 K. Building on our temperature-dependent vibrational power spectra, we are also able to disentangle structure and temperature effects on individual spectral contributions arising from water molecules located in the inner and outer shell of OH^-(H₂O)₂₆. Some of these theoretical results provide valuable guidance for the interpretation of IRMPD spectra of small hydroxide-water clusters, but there are also several intriguing implications of these results, in particular, for the solvation of the OH^- ion at the surface of water nanodroplets and aqueous interfaces.

Water in Protic Ionic Liquid Electrolytes: From Solvent Separated Ion Pairs to Water Clusters

The large electrochemical and cycling stability of "water-in-salt" systems have rendered promising prospective electrolytes for batteries. The impact of addition of water on the properties of ionic liquids has already been addressed in several publications. In this contribution, we focus on the changes in the state of water. Therefore, we investigated the protic ionic liquid N-butyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide with varying water content at different temperatures with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations. It is revealed that at very low concentrations, the water is well dispersed and best characterized as shared solvent molecules. At higher concentrations, the water forms larger aggregates and is increasingly approaching a bulk-like state. While the librational and rotational dynamics of the water molecules become faster with increasing concentration, the translational dynamics are found to become slower. Further, all dynamics are found to be faster if the temperature increases. The trends of these findings are well in line with the experimental measured conductivities.

Nuclear quantum effects on autoionization of water isotopologs studied by ab initio path integral molecular dynamics

In this study, we investigate the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the acidity constant (pK_A) of liquid water isotopologs under the ambient condition by path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations. We compared simulations using a fully explicit solvent model with a classical polarizable force field, density functional tight binding, and ab initio density functional theory, which correspond to empirical, semiempirical, and ab initio PIMD simulations, respectively. The centroid variable with respect to the proton coordination number of a water molecule was restrained to compute the gradient of the free energy, which measures the reversible work of the proton abstraction for the quantum mechanical system. The free energy curve obtained by thermodynamic integration was used to compute the pK_A value based on probabilistic determination. This technique not only reproduces the pK_A value of liquid D₂O experimentally measured (14.86) but also allows for a theoretical prediction of the pK_A values of liquid T₂O and aqueous HDO and HTO, which are unknown due to their scarcity. It is also shown that the NQEs on the free energy curve can result in a downshift of 4.5 ± 0.9 pK_A units in the case of liquid water, which indicates that the NQEs plays an indispensable role in the absolute determination of pK_A. The results of this study can help inform further extensions into the calculation of the acidity constants of isotope substituted species with high accuracy.

Electron generation in water induced by magnetic effect and its impact on dissolved oxygen concentration

pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration are important parameters in water quality surveillance and treatment. The changes of these parameters are associated with electron density in water. Several techniques including electrolysis and catalysis which require redox reactions and electron exchange are employed to improve these parameters. In recent years, studies reported that magnetic effects can impart considerable changes on the pH, ORP and DO concentration of water. However, the correlation between electron density and magnetic effects on these parameters has yet to be disclosed despite the fact that increased electron density in water could improve water’s reductive properties, heat capacity and hydrogen bonding characteristics. In this study, the magnetic effects on pH, ORP and DO concentration were investigated using different magnets arrangements and water flow rates based on reversed electric motor principle. Results showed that the improvement of pH, ORP and DO concentration from 5.40–5.42 to 5.58–5.62 (+ 3.5%), 392 to 365 mV (− 6.9%), and 7.30 to 7.71 mg L^− 1 (+ 5.6%), respectively were achieved using combined variables of non-reversed polarity magnet arrangement (1000–1500 G magnetic strength) and water flow rate of 0.1–0.5 mL s^− 1. Such decrement in ORP value also corresponded to 8.0 × 10¹³ number of electron generation in water. Furthermore, Raman analysis revealed that magnetic effect could strengthen the intermolecular hydrogen bonding of water molecules and favor formation of smaller water clusters. The findings of this study could contribute to potential applications in aquaculture, water quality control and treatment of cancer attributed to free radical induced-oxidative stress.

Activity coefficients of binary methanol alcohol mixtures from cluster weighting

The hydrogen bond network of different small alcohols is investigated via cluster analysis. Methanol/alcohol mixtures are studied with increasing chain length and branching of the molecule. Those changes can play an important role in different fields, including solvent and metal extraction. The extended tight binding method GFN2-xTB allows the evaluation and geometry optimization of thousands of clusters built via a genetic algorithm. Interaction energies and geometries are evaluated and discussed for the neat systems. Thermodynamic properties, such as vaporization enthalpies and activity coefficients, are calculated with the binary quantum cluster equilibrium (bQCE) approach using our in-house code peacemaker 2.8. Combined distribution functions of the distances against the angles of the hydrogen bonds are evaluated for neat and mixed clusters and weighted by the equilibrium populations achieved from bQCE calculations.

Combined Effects from Solvation and Nuclear Quantum Fluctuations on Autoionization Mechanisms in Aqueous Clusters

Using path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, we examine isomerization paths involving collective proton transfers in [H₂O]₅ and [H₂O]₈ clusters under cryogenic conditions. We focused attention on combined effects derived from solvation and nuclear quantum fluctuations on the characteristics of free energy barriers and relative stabilities of reactants and products. In particular, we analyzed two different processes: the first one involves the exchange of donor-acceptor hydrogen bond roles along cyclic moieties, whereas the second one corresponds to charge separation leading to stable [H₃O]⁺[OH]^- ion pairs. In the first case, the explicit incorporation of quantum tunneling introduces important modifications in the classical free energy profile. The resulting quantum profile presents two main contributions, one corresponding to compressions of O-O distances and a second one ascribed to nuclear tunneling of the light protons. Solvation effects promote a moderate polarization of the cyclic structures and a partial loss of concertedness in the collective modes, most notably, at the onset of tunneling. Still, the latter effects are also sufficiently strong to promote the stabilization of ion pairs along the classical trajectories. In contrast, the explicit incorporation of nuclear quantum fluctuations leads to charge separated configurations that are marginally stable. As such, the latter states could also be regarded as short-lived intermediate states along the reactive exchange path.

Theoretical Prediction of Robust Second-Row Oxyanion Clusters in the Metastable Domain of Antielectrostatic Hydrogen Bonding

We provide ab initio and density functional theory evidence for a family of surprisingly robust like-charged clusters of common HSO₄^- and H₂PO₄^- oxyanions, ranging up to tetramers of net charge 4-. Our results support other recent theoretical and experimental evidence for "antielectrostatic" hydrogen-bonded (AEHB) species that challenge conventional electrostatic conceptions and force-field modeling of closed-shell ion interactions. We provide structural and energetic descriptors of the predicted kinetic well-depths (in the range 3-10 kcal/mol) and barrier widths (in the range 2-4 Å) for simple AEHB dimers, including evidence of extremely strong hydrogen bonding in the fluoride-bisulfate dianion. For more complex polyanionic species, we employ natural-bond-orbital-based descriptors to characterize the electronic features of the cooperative hydrogen-bonding network that are able to successfully defy Coulomb explosion. The computational results suggest a variety of kinetically stable AEHB species that may be suitable for experimental detection as long-lived gas-phase species or structural units of condensed phases, despite the imposing electrostatic barriers that oppose their formation under ambient conditions.

Polyion Covalency: Exotic Species from the Unexplored World of Electrostatically Shielded Molecular Ion Chemistry

Standard quantum chemical methods have been employed to describe a variety of kinetically stable polyionic molecular species that are trapped in appreciable potential wells by chemical bonding forces, despite powerful electrostatic opposition that challenges conventional chemical detection and characterization. The studied species are covalent or dative analogs of "anti-electrostatic" hydrogen-bonded (AEHB) species, all illustrating how short-range quantum covalency can overcome the powerful "shielding" opposition of long-range electrostatic forces to form highly charged molecular species, analogous to known neutral or singly ionic counterparts. Computational predictions of representative structural, spectroscopic, and NBO-based electronic signatures of multiply charged analogs of common neutral species (CH₃ CH₃ , CO₂ , FeCO) are provided to suggest the unique material properties characteristic of this shielded domain of polyionic chemical phenomena.
