Structural colour of unary and binary colloidal crystals probed by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and optical microscopy

Modeling the co-assembly of binary nanoparticles

In this work, we present a binary assembly model that can predict the co-assembly structure and spatial frequency spectra of monodispersed nanoparticles with two different particle sizes. The approach relies on an iterative algorithm based on geometric constraints, which can simulate the assembly patterns of particles with two distinct diameters, size distributions, and at various mixture ratios on a planar surface. The two-dimensional spatial-frequency spectra of the modeled assembles can be analyzed using fast Fourier transform analysis to examine their frequency content. The simulated co-assembly structures and spectra are compared with assembled nanoparticles fabricated using transfer coating method are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. The co-assembly model can also be used to predict the peak spatial frequency and the full-width at half-maximum bandwidth, which can lead to the design of the structure spectra by selection of different monodispersed particles. This work can find applications in fabrication of non-periodic nanostructures for functional surfaces, light extraction structures, and broadband nanophotonics.

Structural Color Mixing in Microcapsules through Exclusive Crystallization of Binary and Ternary Colloids

Colloidal crystals are designed as photonic microparticles for various applications. However, conventional microparticles generally have only one stopband from a single lattice constant, which restricts the range of colors and optical codes available. Here, photonic microcapsules are created that contain two or three distinct crystalline grains, resulting in dual or triple stopbands that offer a wider range of colors through structural color mixing. To produce distinct colloidal crystallites from binary or ternary colloidal mixtures, the interparticle interaction is manipulated using depletion forces in double-emulsion droplets. Aqueous dispersions of binary or ternary colloidal mixtures in the innermost droplet are gently concentrated in the presence of a depletant and salt by imposing hypertonic conditions. Different-sized particles crystallize into their own crystals rather than forming random glassy alloys to minimize free energy. The average size of the crystalline grains can be adjusted with osmotic pressure, and the relative ratio of distinct grains can be controlled with the mixing ratio of particles. The resulting microcapsules with small grains and high surface coverage are almost optically isotropic and exhibit highly-saturated mixed structural colors and multiple reflectance peaks. The mixed color and reflectance spectrum are controllable with the selection of particle sizes and mixing ratios.

Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy study of subcellular granules in human platelets at the carbon K- and calcium L2,3-edges

Platelets and their subcellular components (e.g., dense granules) are essential components in hemostasis. Understanding their chemical heterogeneities at the sub-micrometer scale, particularly their activation during hemostasis and production of platelet-derived extracellular vesicles, may provide important insights into their mechanisms; however, this has rarely been investigated, mainly owing to the lack of appropriate chemical characterization tools at nanometer scale. Here, the use of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) combined with X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) to characterize human platelets and their subcellular components at the carbon K-edge and calcium L_2,3-edge, is reported. STXM images can identify not only the spatial distribution of subcellular components in human platelets, such as dense granules (DGs) with sizes of ~200 nm, but also their granule-to-granule chemical heterogeneities on the sub-micrometer scale, based on their XANES spectra. The calcium distribution map as well as the principal component analysis of the STXM image stacks clearly identified the numbers and locations of the calcium-rich DGs within human platelets. Deconvolution of the carbon K-edge XANES spectra, extracted from various locations in the platelets, showed that amide carbonyl and carboxylic acid functional groups were mainly found in the cytoplasm, while ketone-phenol-nitrile-imine, aliphatic, and carbonate functional groups were dominant in the platelet DGs. These observations suggest that platelet DGs are most likely composed of calcium polyphosphate associated with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP), with significant granule-to-granule variations in their compositions, while the cytoplasm regions of platelets contain significant amounts of proteins.

Recent Advances in Binary Colloidal Crystals for Photonics and Porous Material Fabrication

In the past few years, binary colloidal crystals (BCCs) composed of both large and small particles have attracted considerable attention from the scientific community as an exciting alternative to single colloidal crystals (SCCs). In particular, more complex structures with diverse nanotopographies and desirable optical properties of BCCs can be obtained by various colloidal assembly methods, as compared to SCCs. Furthermore, high accuracy in crystal growth with controllable stoichiometries allows for a great deal of promising applications in the fields of both interfacial and material sciences. The visible-light diffraction property of BCCs is more superior than that of SCCs, which makes them have more promising applications in the fabrication of photonic crystals with full band gaps. On the other hand, their spherical shapes and ease of removal property make them ideal templates for ordered porous material fabrication. Hence, this perspective outlined recent advances in assembly approaches of BCCs, with an emphasis on their promising applications for advanced photonics and multifunctional porous material fabrication. Eventually, some challenging yet important issues and some future perspectives are further discussed.

Effect of the Polydopamine Composite Method on Structural Coloration: Comparison of Binary and Unary Assembly of Colloidal Particles

Melanin influences light reflection and absorption and is known to be one of the elements producing structural color, such as that in the feathers of birds. In this study, we used polydopamine (PDA), an artificial melanin, as a light-absorbing material and examined in detail the effect of its composite method on the structural color. The following two composite methods were investigated using cerium(IV) oxide (CeO₂) particles as a core particle: binary coassembly of CeO₂ and PDA particles and unary assembly of CeO₂@PDA core-shell particles. Although both methods dramatically improved the visibility of the structural color by suppressing the scattered light owing to the light absorption capability of the PDA, there was a difference in the particle arrangement, angle dependence of the structural color, and color tone change. By selecting the PDA composite method, the guidelines for providing high visibility and the desired structural color were presented.

Identification of Ca-rich dense granules in human platelets using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy

Whole-mount (WM) platelet preparation followed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation is the standard method currently used to assess dense granule (DG) deficiency (DGD). However, due to the electron-density-based contrast mechanism in TEM, other granules such as α-granules might cause false DG detection. Here, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) was used to identify DGs and minimize false DG detection of human platelets. STXM image stacks of human platelets were collected at the calcium (Ca) L2,3 absorption edge and then converted to optical density maps. Ca distribution maps, obtained by subtracting the optical density maps at the pre-edge region from those at the post-edge region, were used to identify DGs based on the Ca richness. DGs were successfully detected using this STXM method without false detection, based on Ca maps for four human platelets. Spectral analysis of granules in human platelets confirmed that DGs contain a richer Ca content than other granules. The Ca distribution maps facilitated more effective DG identification than TEM which might falsely detect DGs. Correct identification of DGs would be important to assess the status of platelets and DG-related diseases. Therefore, this STXM method is proposed as a promising approach for better DG identification and diagnosis, as a complementary tool to the current WM TEM approach.
